PEMAC’S CPD PROGRAM
Aligned with the strategic goal to set high standards for asset management excellence in Canada, the PEMAC Board of Directors recently implemented a long-held vision of enhancing the PEMAC Maintenance Management Professional (MMP) and Certified Asset Management Professional (CAMP) certifications through a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) program. Real-world application of maintenance, reliability and asset management fundamentals in professional practice has changed very significantly over the last 20 years and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. The CPD program is intended to encourage certified individuals to stay current through a self-directed professional development plan which is relevant to their particular or desired professional role.
We have intentionally designed and structured the program to be relevant, achievable and administrable for both certificants and the association.
The Requirements:
For both MMP and CAMP the continuing professional development requirements are 120 hours over 3 years, in at least two of the following very broad categories: 1. Formal Education /Training (received) 2. Presentation and Publishing 3. Formal Education and Training (delivered) 4. Community participation 5. Informal Education (limited to 20 hours per year): 6. Professional Practice (limited to 20 hours per year):
The starting line for collecting CPD hours was July 1st, 2021 and the first three-year end point for assessing compliance will be in June 30th, 2024 for individuals who currently hold certifications.
A few points to note:
• Compliance will definitely require time and intentionality but it will be possible to comply with minimal cost. See the second point below. • The last two categories, “Informal
Education” and “Professional Practice” are relatively unstructured so the con-
tribution in hours of each is capped at 20 hours per year. Still, these two categories alone could net the full 120 hours required over the three year period. • Hours will be claimed on an honour-system basis and evidence will be requested on a randomly selected audit-basis. • The required report will be very simple, including only 6 fields (one for each category) reflecting only the total hours in a given year. • We are tracking any PEMAC activity you undertake (attendance at webcasts, conference and committee work) automatically and have made details of your PEMAC continuing professional development hours available as a membership benefit. You can log in to find these hours which you can then apply to this and other CPD programs to which you may subscribe. • If you hold both MMP and CAMP certifications your CPD undertaken for one will count for the other. • If you are retired or no longer working in your field of practice, you can claim
“Not Practicing” status and continue to hold your PEMAC certification. If your conditions change in the future and you wish to return to “Practicing” status, you simply notify PEMAC and re-enter the CPD program. Certain professional development activities may be recommended or required. • You can retain “Practicing” status even if you become unemployed by using categories other than ‘professional practice’ to meet the CPD requirements.
As noted, the new CPD program is intended to encourage you to become proactive about continuing professional development which will, naturally, further elevate the significance and value of carrying a PEMAC professional designation.
