FREELANCE VILLA PROJECT - 2015| Gizem Kaya

R-URBAN RENEWAL IN SHENZHEN - 2015| Gizem Kaya Today the cities in the Pearl River Delta, especially Shenzhen, are at their limits of growth capacity. Economy-oriented approach encroaching on habitats and industrial areas cover a large portion of the city. People living in the area, are not just those who migrated from outside rural areas, but also those whose living areas are occupied by the city. When the pains of the ongoing integration caused by transfer of sovereignity is faded away, Hong Kong will start to periodically lose its “unique” attributes in some areas by sharing some of its economical capabilites to neighbouring cities. While this process may cause growth potential of Hong Kong to spread to other cities, it will also cause a lose of growth speed in Hong Kong. Since Luohu and Sungang-Quingshuihe functions as a node for industrial traffic between Hong Kong, Shenzhen and mainland China, predicted growth of warehouses in the area also may not occur. If the actual growth in Shenzhen occurs in Futian, worker population in Sungang-Quingshuihe may also shift to that area as well. In order to prevent more extension beyond city limits, and by the help of slower growth speed in Luohu region Chinese administration may try to re-urbanize these areas at city center. Thus, the region may become more people oriented and less industry oriented. Though losing some of its industrial and economic privileges, Hong Kong will still be an attraction center due to its cultural richness and unique demographic structure as a result of being a British colony for a hundred years. Sungang-Quingshuihe has a high potential in terms of cultural activites because of its proximity to Hong-Kong. Due to being last stop before arrival for local and foreign tourists coming to Hong Kong, a new architectural approach of “Neo-Chinese" could also create potential display area there. People-oriented urbanism, reduction in the rate of production growth and proximity to Hong Kong is possible to create attraction to the area. As the Invisible City Despina, Sungang-Quingshuihe is the border city between two worlds. Visitors coming from all around the world will expect to see and experience China in the area, whereas the visitors from mainland China will expect to see the cultural diversity and international taste. Howewer, Hong Kong is also showing similiar aspects. Therefore, a need for Identity arises to differ Sungang-Quingshuihe from Hong Kong.

Slow Paced City _Relocating the mechanical and industrial functions (warehouses, transportations) to underground _Separating the freight train and passenger train stations. Healed City _Refunctioning the areas gained by relocating the warehouses as urban agriculture to ease accessibility of agricultural products. _Creating a pedestrian path which is projection of metro lines on the ground and taking shape according to slow&fast usages. Creative City _ The path fed from surrounding functions, then reflecting them itself. It increases people interaction, so this provides creativity. _Schools and educational facilities maintaining the traditional Chinese culture. Then, there will be centers serving in the light of this education. _Creating a Neo-Chinese architecture line starting from the welcoming place.

UNFINISHED/DERELICT ARCHITECTURE -2014| Gizem Kaya Reclaming a Blighted Spor at Çankaya: The Çankaya Hub

The Çankaya HUB is a mixed-use Complex as a community center and the program consist of residential for the short term visitors, library and studying area, auditorium for 400-100-50 people, cafe and retail shops on the ground floor, think tank cluster of workshops, offices, seminar rooms, meeting rooms. I create a system from public to private. The circulation begin with dynamic main street to resident where residential area already exist. To strength the idea from public to private, the HUB is rising and move away from gorund from public to private to focus the seperation from ground. Library is rising on columns to attract people want to enter the HUB. There is main entrance for the think tank and commercials and seperate entrance for libarary. The residential and auditorium have their own entrances and lobbies for the certain users. In the public areas there are galleries, a lot of lobbies, alternative staircases to increase interaction. The alternative stairs offer change to see other interactive activities while going somewhere else.

The stairs starts from the main street and get through the library, studying area and think tank lounch, finally going arround the building. Then another alternative stairs starts from the grund floor where commercial line ends and going around the building surface and experience the activityies like workshops, exhibitions, lounch facilities and finally reach the terrace. The both stairs walk around the public areas and provide the show all public activities and also draw a public strip of the building.

TW TOWER PROJECT - 2013 | Gizem Kaya

IZNIK TILE CERAMIC RESEARCH CENTER - 2012| Gizem Kaya Primarily design idea is emphasizing the historic fortification wall and gate and the amphitheatre located in the area. The next decision is to make the region a focal point of the city and a historical place to visit. The existing fortification gate was used as the symbolic gate of the design. There is a colonnaded road that starts from the fortification gate and circulates between structures. There is a mini amphitheater, symbolized the existing one, between the exhibition area and the cafe. Fortification wall used as stage for shows and there is 3 meter excavation for sitting and isolating place from outside. The place used as gathering people and events. There is main building in center used as education and workshops. The other 4 buildings -cafe, museum, library, gift shop- placed arranged around the main building as private to public. The whole place thought as an open air museum and historical ruins and products produced in the training building are exhibited not only in the eshibition area but the whole open and close places.
