Editor’s Note About GirlAT & ATX Festival Howdy, Y’all! We are exited to head back to Austin for the 2nd year of the ATX Television Festival. So excited, in fact, that we’ve made this season’s shopping guide into a “Best Of Austin” city guide. Austin is a city dear to us, since we both attended the University of Texas at Austin. (And didn’t even know each other then!) Between its famous tagline, “Live Music Capital of the World” and the ever popular call to “Keep Austin Weird,” the Texas state capital defies presumptions about what it should be and prefers to keep evolving… into whatever it damn well feels like. Which is why visitors fall in love with Austin so easily, and yet have a difficult time packing for ‘Austin chic’. With that in mind, we created a guide filled with our favorites for where to go and what to do, as well as what to wear around this fun town. 3

And why are so many visitors getting together here? For the ATX Television Festival, of course! In its second year, the ATX Television Festival has already achieved a prestigious position within television industry insiders. And more important, this incredibly successful and fun festival was created by two friends, Caitlin McFarland and Emily Gipson, and we are so happy to be there to support them again this year. See you around Austin!

Dancing at Broken Spoke First swinging its doors open in 1964 this is the dancehall for a night of kicking your heels up to some real-deal Texas-style country music. Famed musicians have played their hearts out here for years, including local favorites like Gary P. Nunn and Chris Wall but out-of-towners might be more impressed by the big names like George Strait, Jerry Jeff Walker and Willie Nelson who’ve strummed guitars at the Spoke as well. Don’t miss the memorabilia room, and oh, by the way keep an eye out, as Mr. Nelson’s been known to stop in for chicken fried steak.

EAT

Austin does not lack for barbeque joints, so to pick one to recommend could be hard, yet former Austin residents Leigh and Mary both agree; Salt Lick is the Girl Around Town fave. Boasting BBQ recipes dating back to the mid-1800’s this is one of the best spots for ribs, brisket and sausage the Hill Country. Hitch a ride to Driftwood, TX, {a wee drive from Austin} and enjoy some time in the country. The grounds of the restaurant are as beautiful as the smokehouse is amazing. , 826 1 0 FM TX 59 0 9 3 4 , . 18 d woo 12.857 t f i r 5 D 9 1 786

EAT Güero’s or Maudie’s

Tex-Mex must-haves? Crisp chips, fresh salsa, tequila (obvi), and a laid back atmosphere. But what makes a Tex-Mex spot great? Leigh & Mary have different opinions, yet you can’t go wrong with either. Mary champions the fajitas at Güero’s, while Leigh swears that Maudie’s cheese enchiladas are the

best when it comes to curbing Tex-Mex cravings. And the Tex-Mex debate rages on. Deciding on a restaurant is hard but the outfit is easy; rock a perfect look in cute shorts, sandals and a blouse. Phew. Now, who’s up for another tequila shot?

EAT Uchi

If you assume that Austin isn’t winning any awards for sushi, let us introduce you to James Beard Award-winning chef Tyson Cole. His raw seafood creations are a tastebud treat, crafting traditional Japanese recipes with unexpected flavors. Think sea bass in orange oil with garlic and black pepper. Yum.
