LONG BAY Set just outside the heart of Myrtle Beach, Long Bay Golf Club blends the feel of East and West Coast play, starting with the environment designed by The Golden Bear himself, Jack Nicklaus. Dogwoods, pines and maples sit along the course as crystal-blue streams cut through several holes. Beyond the course’s enchantment, players must navigate a variety of bunker styles, shallow greens and considerable elevation changes. It’s clear Nicklaus wasn’t intending Long Bay to be a relative walk in the park – even if at times that’s exactly where you believe you are. Make your next round memorable, book your tee time at Long Bay.

armstead Golf Links and Meadowlands Golf Club are located in the South Brunswick Islands and northern Grand Strand area. Both golf courses are designed in a traditional style with unique challenges by Willard Byrd and both golf courses were developed by the McLamb family who are locals to the Shallotte area. The property on which Farmstead and Meadowlands are located is a true testament to heritage, tradition and family. In fact, the McLamb’s spent years planning and carefully evaluating the strength of their land holdings which is near Mr. W.J. McLamb’s childhood home to determine the absolute best possible use of the family’s historical asset and managing what could be their legacy. Development of Farmstead and Meadowlands certainly benefited from the hands-on style of the McLamb family. Mr. McLamb states, “We wanted the golf courses and residential neighborhoods to reflect the peacefulness serenity I experienced 14

as a child. My grandparents raised eleven children on this property. My cousins and I played here as children. We selected the farm-style clubhouse and out building to reflect a simpler time.” The Farmstead clubhouse’s expansive back porch overlooking a lake should prove to be a favorite for golfers. The grill, actually named Grandma Polly’s Kitchen for Mr. McLamb’s grandmother who lived on the property, serves deli foods along with domestic and imported wines and beers. So, Farmstead and Meadowlands do not represent your typical golf course development story. This one includes a true sense of respect, dedication and heart. What is typical of this story is that same amount of heart goes into every aspect of what you will experience at these golf courses. The customers are more than guests; they’re family. River Hills Golf & Country Club

A visually intimidating course designed by architect Tom Jackson, River Hills is easier to play than it looks. Course architect Tom Jackson describes his Myrtle Beach golf course creation: “Modern in concept, yet traditional in nature, River Hills is a pleasing blend of old and new design ideas unlike any other course at the beach.

What makes the River Hills course like no other is that it is peppered with non-parallel fairways, rolling hills, and frequent 40-foot elevation changes. It is also unique in the sense that it has only one set of parallel holes: # 1 and # 10. You play out nine and play back in, ending at the clubhouse at the end of each nine. The 17th hole is considered the signature hole, with its double dog-leg par 5 and two water carries.

Extensive renovation in 2003 has made the course friendlier, although it retains its intimidating look and feel. Crushed limestone, instead of the usual pine straw, helps outline the greens, adding a pleasing visual aspect. Tall pine trees surround the course, and lush, dense live oaks around the greens add to the southern feel. Amenities: Golf Shop, Snack Bar, Practice Area, Driving Range www.mbgolfinsider.com

rown Park Golf Club is in a class of its own and is a true rarity on the Grand Strand in that there are no houses on the golf course, lending a feeling of tranquility in nature to the experience of playing a round. That’s why this golf facility is known for “Just Golf…No Distractions”.

In recent months, Crown Park has come under new ownership that has elected to make Crown Park Golf Club even more enjoyable by further investing funds towards a renovation project. Gene Blanton has been chosen to oversee the entire agronomy aspect of Crown Park. Under his direction, the upgrades for this 18-hole golf course include enhancing the greens, repairing bunkers and shap-

ing fairways. Additionally, an extensive landscaping plan will improve the aesthetics throughout the property including the clubhouse and practice areas. In order to create a truly organic method for the growth of grass, trees will simply be trimmed so that sunlight will serve as a natural fertilizer. Finally, consistent and daily maintenance will provide quality playing conditions on a year-round basis. Of course, with leadership from Director of Golf and PGA Professional, Kevin Lovell, golf operations, customer service and the clubhouse facilities at Crown Park will continue to be recognized as holding the highest level of quality standards along the Grand Strand. 32nd Annual Myrtle Beach Amateur Championship by: Chris King

ae Kim of Richmond, VA emerged from field of 3,400 golfers to claim mantle of World Champion Kim shot a net 65 (gross 85) at Barefoot Resort’s Dye Course to win the Flight Winner’s Playoff and claim the mantle of World Champion at the 32nd annual Myrtle Beach World Amateur Handicap Championship. Kim bested Steve Locke of Lubbock, TX, a 3 handicap who shot a net 67, by two strokes. Anthony Baker of Walkertown, NC, shot a 73 Friday and finished with a four-day total of 290, good enough to beat Ryan Reynolds by two strokes to win the World Am’s Gross Division Championship. Additionally, Clint Payton and John Burton of Seymour, IN, shot a net team total of 138 to win the International Pairs event and earn the right to compete in Spain next year in the IP World Finals. The Flight Winner’s Playoff brought the 32nd annual Myrtle Beach World Amateur Handicap Championship, the game’s most inclusive event, to a close. Nearly 3,400 players from 48 states and 28 countries descended on Myrtle Beach for the 72-hole net stroke play event. Players were arranged into flights according to their handicap and at the conclusion of the four rounds, all flight winners (and ties) advanced to the 18-hole world championship playoff.

The World Am features six competitive divisions, ranging from men and women 49 years-of-age and under to the super seniors, who are 70 yearsof-age and older. After rain washed out Monday’s round for the majority of the field, the weather was idyllic the rest of the week. The Dye Club, which has been ranked among America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses, was in pristine condition and provided an excellent test of golf for the Flight Winner’s Playoff. The World’s Largest 19th Hole was again the heartbeat of the World Am. Players and their guests were treated to free food and drinks, a golf expo and live entertainment. Two-time major champion John Daly was onhand, signing autographs, serving drinks and even singing onstage. Daly was joined by Golf Channel analyst Charlie Rymer, television personality Win McMurry, and the popular Sirius/XM radio show Katrek and Maginnes On Tap broadcast live from the 19th Hole main stage each night. The course has been remodeled over the years and has evolved from the original 27-hole layout to an 18-hole course which is currently on the National Register of Historical Places. Craig Schreiner was contracted to redesign the course. His passion for the game and its architecture is a natural fit in maintaining the historical integrity associated with Robert White’s original design, affectionately known as “The Granddaddy”. here is a tendency in life to gravitate towards what is new, but typically standing the test of time is the truest indicator of quality. That is certainly the case at Oyster Bay Golf Links, one of the Grand Strand’s premier layouts. The Dan Maples design opened to universal acclaim in 1983, winning “Best New Resort Course” honors from Golf Digest, and it has only gotten better with age. The combination of a beautiful piece of coastal property, a commitment to service, and Maples’ design wizardry has kept the course atop the playlist for smart group leaders.

is always looking for ways to improve the experience. Hence, the clubhouse enjoyed a recent facelift, modernizing the facility and making it a more inviting venue for a post-round meal or drink. But it’s the layout that brings players back. Maples original work has been largely left untouched, allowing its quality to shine. The one minor exception is a recently completed change to Oyster Bay’s signature hole, the drivable par 4 13th.

The hole plays just 280 yards from the white tees with water lurking on the right, but the cavernous bunker that fronts the green has been “It’s one of the original courses slightly reduced in size, providing down here,” Head Pro Tim Jackson some bailout room. A Timeless Classic Jackson said. “Smart players play a 3 or 5 wood and layup to 100 yards, but you have to know your distances. A little more strategy (on No. 13) pays off.” The 13th might be the signature hole, but it’s only the start of the fun heading down the stretch. The 15th and 17th are island green par 3s and the penultimate green is ringed by the course’s trademark oyster shells, making it a favorite of everyone with a cell phone camera. Between those two beauties is the beast – No. 16, which might be the hardest par 4 at the beach. The 16th plays 389 yards from the white tees (a mammoth 450 from the blues) and water dissects the fairway, guaranteeing a long approach.

less appealing. The Calabash River comes into play on holes five through 8, creating some of the course’s most memorable views. In all, there is water on 16 of 18 holes, and Oyster Bay rewards precision far more than power. Golfers that hit the ball straight will be playing from the fairway and have a huge advantage. Regardless, any Myrtle Beach golf trip that includes Oyster Bay on the itinerary is a good one.

Get the Pros’ Take on TPC Myrtle Beach

U

pon its walls are the names of champions, including the legendary Tom Watson for his victory at the 2000 Senior Tour Championship. Watson bested a field that year that included the likes of Tom Kite, Larry Nelson, Gil Morgan, Raymond Floyd, Jim Thorpe and Hale Irwin, all descending upon a one-of-a-kind Myrtle Beach design in their quest for golfing glory. And in its illustrious 16-year run, TPC Myrtle Beach is also the place where a modern-day PGA Tour star honed his collegiate skills before emerging as one of golf ’s premier talents.

60

Dustin Johnson’s current resume includes 9 PGA Tour wins, 10 top-10 finishes in majors, nearly $30 million in career earnings and a top-10 spot in the Official World Golf Rankings. Much of the foundation of this success came in his four-year stint at Coastal Carolina University (2003-2007), where as a two-time All-American Johnson competed at TPC Myrtle Beach each year at the General Jim Hackler Invitational – as well as much of his senior season as TPC Myrtle Beach served as the Chanticleers’ home course. So what insight does Johnson offer on what you can expect when you play this Tom Fazio/Lanny Wadkins design?

“It’s a great golf course,” he says. “It’s pretty long if you play it from the back tees, and very challenging (just shy of 7,000 yards from the tips, playing to a course rating of 74.1 and slope of 144). But it’s fun to play, and very fair. Johnson draws particular attention to its opening sequence. “The starting hole is very difficult, and No. 1 through No. 5 is a pretty tough opening stretch,” he notes. “You have to get off to a good start here if you want to shoot a good number.” This challenging stretch includes the 547-yard, par-5 No. 2 that features water down the left side and a second-shot approach to a green guarded by water in the front and bunkers and wetlands to

the left. The par-4 No. 3 plays 447 yards from the tips with a 210-yard carry over marshlands off the tee, and the 158-yard No. 5 is the first of four par 3s at TPC Myrtle Beach that are widely recognized as among the Grand Strand’s best. Another PGA Tour veteran draws particular attention to TPC Myrtle Beach’s 9th hole as well as its two back 9 closing holes. “You look at holes like No. 9 (TPC’s most difficult hole, a par 4 measuring 472 yards from the tips). It would be an awesome finishing hole on any golf course,” says Hugh Royer III, who played on the PGA Tour from 1995 to 1998. “And you look at No. 18, the par 5, which is reachable in two but has a little bit of drama to it with the lake that runs up the left side to the green,” Royer adds. “Along with No. 17 (TPC’s par 3 signature hole that plays over water to a peninsula

green), it makes for two fine finishing holes.” Royer’s best advice on how to maximize your TPC Myrtle Beach experience? “Play it from Point A to Point B to Point C, and just try to hit fairways and greens,” he says. “Don’t try doing anything heroic. If you just go play (that way), you’ll do pretty well, but if you try to bite off a little bit extra or shoot at a pin you don’t need to be shooting at, it will jump up and bite you. It’s a challenge, but it’s also playable for the average person from the proper tees. TPC Myrtle Beach remains the Grand Strand’s only design to receive a 5-star rating in Golf Digest’s “Places to Play.” To learn more about this spectacular design and book your tee time today, visit their Web site at TPCMyrtleBeach.com. ryce Kendrick, a senior captain on the Tennessee Tech men’s golf team, has been feeling pretty good about his golf game this summer.

Contributing writer Alan Blondin

A 10-shot win with his father in the 18th National Father & Son Team Classic presented by PGA Tour Superstore won’t do anything to quell his good vibes. Bryan and Bryce Kendrick of Knoxville, Tenn., shot a 25-under-par 190 gross score in the nearly 700-player event to earn their second title in the past three years. The Kendricks shot a spectacular 12-under 60 Thursday in a best ball format at Prestwick Country Club, 1-under 71 Friday in alternate shot play at Legends Resort’s Moorland Course, Bryce & Bryan Kendrick

and 12-under 59 Saturday in a captain’s choice scramble format at Thistle Golf Club. “It’s fun when you look up and shots are going at the flag, and you’re making 8- and 10-footers routinely,” Bryce said.

Golf Insider - Myrtle Beach

Issue 4 2015

In the best-ball 60 at Prestwick, Bryce shot a 7-under 65 on his own ball despite a shot out of bounds that led to a double bogey, and both players made eagles as they took an eight-shot lead after the first round. Bryce, 21, was 6 under through 10 holes. The Kendricks have competed in the Father-Son four times, including the past three years. Their score was 21 under both in 2013 when they won by a stroke over two-time champions Gary Carpenter Sr. and Jr., in 2014, when they finished two strokes behind champions Phillip and Josh Radcliff of Coppell, Texas. “The courses were harder this year,” Bryan said. “Prestwick and Thistle were challenging, and they had Thistle [tees] back, which was interesting. I think the golf courses were harder [in the championship flight] this year than any other year we’ve played.” Bryan says he still drives the ball up to 280 yards, but his son is consistently 30 to 40 yards longer off the tee, so it was a challenge in the alternate shot and scramble formats to select Bryan’s six required drives. “We’re always trying to figure out where we’re going to play mine,” Bryan said. Based on their win, the Kendricks have an opportunity to play in the European Father & Son Golf Championship from Oct. 26-31 in Cadiz Andalusia, Spain. They finished 11th two years ago in the event, which had dozens of teams representing 18 countries. Kyle said his coach at Tennessee Tech, Polk Brown, has already given his blessing to skip his team’s coinciding college tournament that week to compete with his father and take advantage of tournament-paid expenses including entry fees, lodging and meals. www.mbgolfinsider.com

Bryce, whose brother, Brett, is a redshirt sophomore offensive tackle at the University of Tennessee, entered the Father-Son off a couple strong finishes. He was the fifth-lowest amateur and 13th overall in the Tennessee Open, and finished third in the Willow Creek Invitational amateur event in Knoxville. Bryce’s swing coach is Brad Rose of Willow Creek Golf Club in Knoxville, who also instructs PGA Tour members Eric Axley and Tennessee Tech graduate Scott Stallings and a number of other pro and college players. Bryce, whose school plays Division I golf in the Ohio Valley Conference, has three collegiate top-10 finishes and is still seeking his first win The Kendricks aren’t sure if they’ll return next summer to defend a title for a second time. Bryce may turn pro at the conclusion of the college season and he may have a conflicting pro tournament.

Heavily landscaped areas of wildflowers and flowering shrubs will maintain the beauty of this historical setting for generations to come. “America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses” - Golf Digest - 2005, 2007, 2009.

The Advantages to Living in a Golf Course Community

One of the most appealing types of planned communities is a golf course commu-

nity – even for those who do not play golf. These communities have much to offer, from young families just starting out to empty-nesters to retirees. The obvious attraction is the golf course itself, which can run around and/or through the subdivision. The course can offer serene views of trees, green space, and water. The openness of the course and its landscaping give residents beautiful sights and in most cases, fresher air. For those who enjoy the game of golf, community residents often receive discounts or incentives to use and or belong to their neighborhood course. Quite often, driving to the golf courses can add a great deal of time to the golfer’s day. However having one that is just around the corner is very convenient and a time saver. Along with the golf course, these communities tend to have much to offer, including clubhouses, fitness/wellness centers, pools, tennis court, basketball courts, playgrounds, walking paths, ponds, planned activities for residents, and more. While the common grounds of golf course communities are usually as immaculately kept as the course itself. Being a community built around a sport, those living within tend to have a more active and healthier lifestyle. There is also the sense of prestige attached to living in a golf course community. Golf course communities are not for everyone. Many times, they call for higher monthly and/or annual dues. Homes, especially those that back up directly to the golf course, may have strict deed restrictions and home owner’s association rules that must be obeyed. Those that back up to the course could have spectacular views, but could also have to deal with poorly shot golf balls, course noise, and a lack of privacy during the warm weather months, depending on which portion of the course the home borders. Each prospective buyer should sit down with their REALTOR – an area expert who can help the buyers with the weighing of the pros and cons. For a great many buyers, the pros will far outweigh any cons, making the move into a golf course community one of the more enjoyable life choices they undertake. Kind Regards,

ost notably recognized for winning a record 82 PGA TOUR golf events, including seven majors, Sam Snead was admired for his flowing, powerful swing. Additionally, “Slammin’ Sam” Snead was famed for his folksy image by donning his trademark straw hat and sometimes playing barefoot in golf tournaments. As reflected in his winning record, Sam Snead was, obviously, not satisfied with second best. And neither is the restaurant named in tribute to his memory. Sam Snead’s Oak Grill and Tavern is a premier Myrtle Beach restaurant that features legendary flavor from the locally cured and seasoned white and red oak. The menu features certified Angus aged beef, fresh local seafood, chicken, chops, ribs that are smoked over an oak fire before grilled as well as award-winning homemade desserts. Probably the most prominent menu options are the Maryland crab cakes that are overflowing with pure lump crab meat and their meatloaf which locals awarded the “Best All-American Entrée”.

ensure strict quality standards. Handmade soups and desserts are Chef Wilson’s specialty which garnered her and Sam Snead’s Tavern many awards like “Best Dessert” for the Baileys White Chocolate Cheesecake and “People’s Choice Award” for the She Crab Soup. For its overall quality, in 2015 TripAdvisor issued Sam Snead’s Tavern a Certificate of Excellence for its Consistent Excellent Reviews. As for atmosphere, pictures from the old days of golf line the walls. With photos of Sam and other legendary golfers and prints of the great golf courses, the restaurant is home to a mini-museum of golf memorabilia. Along with the dark wooden panels, the photography and art give the place a 19th-hole country club atmosphere that’s welcoming to golfers and families alike. In addition to the restaurant that is open daily for lunch and dinner, Sam Snead’s Tavern hosts a private dining room which is available for business meetings and private functions while providing regular and customized menu options.

Learn To Perfect Your Golf Swing The popularity of golf has exploded over the past 15-20 years. The National Golf Foundation records show that there are 30 million golfers in the United States alone. The average golfer plays 37 rounds of golf per year and many more days between those rounds practicing to hone in their craft. Although golf is considered a low risk sport, recent studies indicate that 60 percent of golf professionals and 40 percent of amatures suffered injuries while golfing. Local sports medicine orthopedic physician with Strand Orthopedic Consultants, Dr. Chris Feathers, MD, stated “It is very common for me to see several patients each week with golf related injuries. I see everything from golfer’s elbow, low back pain, and shoulder injuries due to overuse, to sprained ankles from stepping out of the bunker. In my practice, back pain and overuse shoulder injuries seem to be the most prevalent.” Power in the golf swing is generated from the ground up involving every major joint in the body. As a certified Titleist Performance Institute professional, “We don’t believe there is one way to swing a club; we believe there are an infinite number of ways. But we do believe that there is one efficient way for everyone to swing a club and it is based on what they can physically do.” Therefore, if a person is not swinging the club in an efficient manner, there is a significant amount of damage to the golfer’s body not only during a miss hit but also due to the repetitive injuries that occur from overuse. Many of these injuries can be avoided by using good swing mechanics and a good consistent exercise program that is specific to your golf needs. It pays to seek the advice of a professional who can help you get your body firing on all cylinders so that you can spend more time hitting good shots rather than in the doctors office getting shots! Dry Needling Dry Needling is based on neuroanatomy and modern scientific study. It is a technique that is unequaled in finding and eliminating musculoskeletal and neuromuscular dysfunction that leads to pain and functional deficits. Dry Needling works by causing a micro lesion within the pathological tissue, breaking up shortened tissues and inhibiting a reflex arc from the nervous system to the tissue; thereby, normalizing the inflammatory response and centrally mediating the pain. This mechanical and neuromuscular effect provides an environment that enhances the body’s ability to heal which leads to a reduction in pain.

Keep It In The Fairway The Future of Golf Jeff Diehl, PGA

B

Head Golf Professional - The Dye Club President, MBAGCOA Director, GSGDA Director, The First Tee of the Grand Strand

eyond the benefits of the game itself, golf has always been about camaraderie and community, building a sense of belonging among a group of people who enjoy the fellowship of the game. Day after day I can see it in the golfers eyes who visit The Dye Club at Barefoot Resort…they are here because of the game. The fellowship that the game creates resonates through the hallowed halls of The Dye Club as you walk by the hung images of PGA Tour players and celebrities it echoes a sense of togetherness, hope and enthusiasm. They also create a sense of awareness of what the game is all about and what it means to so many people.

your customers and, more importantly, keeping the relationship you build personal. Building customer loyalty through a number of different avenues like personal communication, promotions, course-specific e-mail blasts and direct marketing is a given but collecting e-mail addresses and building your own database, which it still amazes me how many business are not doing this simple step. It’s hard to ignore the fact that there are 645 million Twitter users sharing millions of 140-character (or less) messages daily. Instagram recently topped 150 million users, and the image-driven platform is a great tool to showcase the beauty of all our courses.

As president of the Myrtle Beach Area Golf Course Owners Association I understand that there’s a large community of people out there who love golf, who are passionate about the game, and who want to engage with others who feel the same way. My goal as president is to help industry leaders learn to use the tools that these golfers utilize to communicate to bring them together. The Internet has had a profound impact on the way course owners and operators sell golf, and it will only increase in importance as aging baby boomers fade and tech-savvy millennials drive future demand. If golf is to sustain or grow demand, now is the time for owners and operators to make wise strategic choices about how to manage and operate their facilities and their tee sheets.

So how can we retain, sustain, grow, and prosper? Start engaging millennials if you haven’t already. Remember they are not your traditional demographic….Marketing to millennials in my opinion needs to be fast, furious and engaging….get your teams involved in the social strategy. Create social media internships or empower millennial employees, with the proper oversight. Set mandatory posts per week to ensure your audience receives consistent messages. Review scheduled posts with your team, but allow them to stretch their imagination and post unique videos and images of golf. Finally, Hashtag everything (#everything!) (#golfisfun!)……. Let them know everything you do is fun….These folks demand to be engaged but also demand to have fun…help them have fun and they will play your courses. It’s becoming a new golfing world out there and we should be connecting with it.

With that being said the “state of the game” to me is all about retention and growth. Creating the relationships with
