I got up at 8 .)0 and had 路 breakfast. Mum and I left home at 12-o'clock in order to catch the 2.10 train from Manchester London Road to London !~le颅 bone, arriving there at 7 .10. At Rugby we picked up er chap from school. Having arrived at London, 8 of us piled into one taxi in order to get to our boarding house which was owned by a Mr. E. Toma, 2.5, Oxford <>QIUJ:'fl Hyde Park. We had supper and then wandered round Londoa until about 10.15. After a very quick wash we went to bed.

Saturday 2nd. January. We all got up at roughly 7 .o and had breakfast.( the usual bacon and eggs. ) We then caught the train to Dover from London Victoria; arriving t&e11e only .half an hour before she sailed~ because the train had been held up. Moat of us were very di sapp when we saw that the sea was calm and that nobody was k. Customs was done on the ship, so we f!tepped straight onto a huge trans-continental express. This took us to a place called Spiez, ·and from there we got a train to Zermatt.

3rd. J anuary. We arrived in Zermatt at ll-o'clock and immediatly went to g~t路 our skis, skis sticks, and boots, which were very heavy. We then 路had a "go" but . . moat of us found that we were very tired as we had slept very little on the couchette journey the nigl'lt before. However, we had a lovely six course meal set before us by the Hotel Dom, at which we were staying-. This meal took frcmm 7.30 to ne路a rly 9 .o, so most of us went to bed

Monday 4th. January. · · We started skiing but found it quite difficult, but it was terrific fun so we did not real~ .mind if we crashed or not. We made speed tracks on our own little ajaopes and timed each other down. We came back to the Hotel for lunch as it was not far away. In the afternoon the second half of .the party had their lesson so we were free. ~ The ski instructor was . called Taugwalder and he was the great, great, grandson of the first _guide to climb the Matterhorn. He himself has climbed the Matterhorn over a lOO times and gone up every route there is because in the summer he is a mountain guide. Thus we found out that skiing is really terrific fun but very tiring.

Tuesday 5th. January. We got up and had breakfast at abou 8 .15. It was the continental type, rolls,· butter, coffee or tea. It was amazingly filling. That morning I had a· bad crash while moving quite fast and nearly broke my ankle, so I went and had a rest for the remainder of morning, but I had another go in the afternoon as it-was very boring in the Hotel when everybody else was out skiing. The. t night we all went to see a film about the climbing _of the Matterhorn. lt ·was one of the more difficult routes and it .showed us what could happen if one was careless. I saw _the ski instructor while coming back to the Hotel and he said that I ought to rub ~ ankle as hard as I could before I went to sleep. This I

Wednesday 6th. January. " Had break fast at 9.0 today as we he.d slept in. Wi decided that we would have a go on the drag lift today. The drag lift was ari endless wire from wJlibh., on long springs, were round discs. The idea was that one sat on these discs with half one' a weight on it and the other half on one' s skis. It ·Was quite interesting going up a slope of roughly· 1 in 4. We had some good runs down and once one of our chaps was moving very fast and be hit a horse, which was pulling a slegge broad-side. He just about laid himself out. My ankle w ~, s just about O.K. so we were all having a terrific time.

Thursday 7th. January. Today was the great day, because some of us were going up the Gornergrat. This was the ma jor ski run in the district, but when we. saw the number , of people we got of the train at a station called Rottenburg. From here we skied down to another station called Riffelburg. •rma was a good run once one got used to it and could be very fast. In the end we were beating the trains { picture ) down. They went at 15 kilometers per hour and went a shorter distance by about 500 or 600 yards. Even beating these trains down did not stop us having one or two bad crashes. After dinner we played bridge until 11.30.

Friday 8th. January.

. This morning I felt"keen. I got up at 6.0 and went for a walk round路 Zermatt. I saw some ski. insructor s coming back from am early morning ski. After ~reakfast we caught the 9.0 train up the Gornergrat and started skiing down on the Rottenburg to Riffelburg run. Having gone up quite a large number of .. times we found that the price of tickets was getting a bit much for us, eo we went down into Zermatt and did some window shoppi~ for the rest of the afternoon. That night we went to see the film the "likings" in English. It was jol~ good.

Saturday 9th. January. Again I went up the Gornergrat and had a good time skiing. This time however, ! ·bought francs. In the end a seven day ticket which cost me it was well worth it. After plenty of skiing I came back and bought Daddy 200 Player's and sent oft the rest of ~ cards• Having had supper I played a rubber of _ b~idge and then went to bed.

Sunday 16th. January. Today. we stayea at the Hotel longer than usual and thus caught the 10.0 train up the Gornergrat. still not feeling very kean we had an hour's rest at Riffelburg, as can be seen 路in the photO on the next page. In the afternoon we went up the Gornergrat again, l?ut as there was only five 路of us we came down a lot f aster and thus one of our chaps had a crash. ~he ski instructor sent one of us down to get the stretcher. When this arrived it came at such a spted that the chap who had fallen thought t hat it would a lot l ess d to go down the rest of the way on his own skis, rather than risk his life in the hands of the instruct~ who had brought the sledge. We pl ayed pontoon that night and I won.

Monday 11. January. . We caught the 9 .o train from Zermatt and got up to Rottenburg. Here w路e got out thinking that the r-'st. of the party was going tci do the same. However they decided to carry on to the top of the Gornergrat and thus three of us had to climb to the top. on our skis. This took us the best part of an ' hour but we weee cheered _up by 路 the thought of the run down. When we got to the top the others had gone .so we set out by ourselves The last part of the route doWn to Rif.felburg is very steep and . it only gives one about 50 yards in which to stop and that is the barest minimum for us. However, I was coming do~ and. there . was a alight bump, not a big one, but just enough to make me leave , the ground. 路 When I hit the ground I had 路one ski underneath the other and thus one of them broke; which we. lucky for me, for otherWise something of me might have broken.

Tueaday 12th. January. w~~ent Skiing for the last time~ The 路visibility was the worst that we had had through out the holiday. Wbile skiing down the Gornergrat we saw a figure in the snow. We stopped and found that it was one of our chaps and that he had broken leg below his knee. Having carried him down the run we were told that another of our party had appendicitieJ and was being operated on as soon as he arrived at the hospital. They both stayed in Switzerland for another week. That night , we played poker again. 路
