A glorious time was had by all as Pastor was treated to a musical tribute of a medley of songs near and dear to his heart. The congregation also competed in a game of Sermon Trivia and was rewarded with a complimentary recording of one of Pastor Bessix’s many memorable sermons. The Trumpet would be remiss if we failed to mention the word brought forth at each service. Reverend Tyronne Jefferson of

calling. He is truly a man anointed by God who relentlessly preaches the acceptable year of the LORD

Remarking on the program, Pastor expressed his deepest heartfelt gratitude for all of the love and support shown to him and his family. “It has been a quick nine years” said Bessix, “It’s hard to believe that it’s been that long.” Through the years, Pastor Thomas Bessix has made a name for himself—Not just for being one of the most charismatic preachers who can slay you with the Word and stretch you out under the pew, but also for his undying dedication to his

Here at the Trumpet, we feel that true fellowship starts once the ice is broken. How many times have we looked around the sanctuary and wondered who we were sitting next to on the pew. Well you won’t have to wonder any further. In future issues of Gideon’s trumpet, we will feature a segment called “Get to know New Gideon” where 3 members will be featured and slowly but surely we will no longer be strangers, but

true brothers and sisters in Christ! Members will be picked at random to be featured, so please be patient as your turn might be next! So, members, when we come and tap you on the shoulder to get our interview, don’t be afraid because there are hundreds of people waiting to meet you with a desire to get to know New Gideon!

Love stories happen all the time. They usually go a little like this: Boy meets girl. They fall in love, get married, and they live happily ever after. Unfortunately, the times in which we live have altered the story a bit and many marriages wind up bruised, broken, and in some cases—destroyed.

“Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh." Genesis 2:24

However, it is refreshing to know that there is help in troubled times. The Trumpet’s Ministry Spotlight focuses on a ministry’s mission and informs you of where help, support, and encouragement may be found. The Married Couples’ Ministry was established in 2007 and was the brainchild of Pastor Thomas & First Lady Kimberly Bessix. They had a vision to birth a ministry that would

seek to provide support, encouragement and spiritual enrichment to all couples. It would be the goal of the ministry to cultivate happy and healthy relationships by nurturing and empowering couples to enjoy each other and the Lord. The ministry also strives to enhance and strengthen a couple’s relationship with each other and their Christian walk, build successful relationship skills, develop a deeper understanding of biblical principles, and establish new friendships through frequent social activities and fellowship. David Traylor & Lee McNeely, Couples’ ministry leaders, are very excited about the upcoming year. Plans are in the works to take the ministry in a new

direction. According to Traylor, “We are starting to acquire books, VHS tapes, and DVD’s, so that we can dedicate a section of the library to the Couple’s Ministry.” Further more, members will be able to check out the materials for use at home. Traylor also said that they are planning a variety of new activities and fellowships for the couples. The activities will include some type of sports and other avenues of recreation. If you and your spouse are interested in becoming a part of this ministry or if you simply want more information, please see either David & Anne Traylor or Lee & Joyce McNeely.

Extreme Fun! Do your children find themselves bored on the weekends? Do they need help with homework and tutoring to make their lessons clear? Well look no further— Extreme Fun has made its way to New Gideon! Extreme Fun is a youth based program designed to allow all children (members & non members) to come to New Gideon for Tutoring in various subjects as well as having a chance to join & rehearse with the youth ministries which include: The Mime Ministry, The Hip Hop Dance Ministry, The Drama Ministry, and , of course, the Youth Choir. The

Extreme Fun program occurs on the 4th Saturday of every month and lasts from 9:45a.m. to 3:45p.m. Reflecting on the first meeting, Crystal Knight, Youth Volunteer, said “So far Extreme Fun has been very successful. The weekend rehearsals seem to work better for the parents and the kids instead of constantly meeting during the week.” Sis. Knight also reported that she is blessed to be working with a wonderful team of youth workers and parents who are all dedicated to making this a success every month.

The primary goal of this program is to reach out to all children—kids in the community, those already functioning in ministry, and those who aren’t so that they know that there is a place that they belong. A place where bonds can be formed and more love shown than can be found in the world. Although Extreme Fun is still in its beginning stages, it is a program that shows great promise. And with the continued support of Parents and children, God will certainly work in the midst.

Men’s Ministry Headed for Higher Heights THE MEN’S MINISTRY NEEDS YOU! We know what you’re thinking...How is a Men’s ministry any different from a woman’s ministry or any other ministry? After all, it would seem that ministry, if operated in service of the Lord, is all the same regardless of the gender, age, or race of the individual serving. Men's Ministry is the active pursuit of men in order to connect them to God, His Word, and other men

for the purpose of winning, growing, and training God's man in Christ. Well, the NGBC Men’s Ministry is actively pursuing all men of New Gideon. Plans are in affect to revamp the ministry in a way that will strengthen the bond and clarify how men are to live while operating in God’s Will. Meetings were held on Sunday, September 20th to briefly discuss future plans, fellowship opportunities, and activities in store for the

men. If you happened to miss those meetings, not to worry, you can still see the following ministry leaders for more details: Minister Milton Davis, Bro.

Senior Saints Celebration Isaiah 46:4 says, “Even in your old age and gray hairs I am He, I am He who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.” On Sunday, October 11, 2009, New Gideon will be hosting a program honoring the church’s “Platinum” members or “Senior Saints” as we affectionately know them. Senior Saints Sunday is the brainchild of Pastor Thomas N. Bessix. He wanted to set aside an occasion to celebrate those who paved the way for us. “It’s because of their faith and hard work, we have this building.” said Bessix.

Many of us don’t take the time to appreciate what our ancestors endured in years past. From the pain and heartache of slavery to the piercing sting of segregation in the fight for Civil Rights. These men and women, under the Lord’s watchful eye prayed diligently and with blood, sweat, and tears helped to sustain New Gideon Baptist Church for over a century. The guest speaker for our program will be Reverend Morris Jackson of Little Zion Baptist Church (Baton Rouge). We hope that you will take time out to come celebrate with us and honor our

SINGLE SCENE

Complete as One! I had someone tell me, just the other day, that one is not complete without a spouse. It made me wonder: How do I, and other single adults, gain a sense of confidence and selfworth in a society that believes such a statement to be true? Many people believe they cannot truly live until they find their significant other. They are unable to believe in themselves until they find partners who believe in them. Some people do not feel they have worth until they find someone to give them a sense of worth. And there are many who gain confidence from a dating or marriage relationship. But is this the only way, or, more importantly, the best way, to find oneself?

“God wants some of us to be single so that we can serve Him in ways those who are married cannot.”

This type of belief systems indicates a dependency on something or someone other than God. Any time we look to anyone or anything other than God to give us meaning, to meet our needs, we are creating an idol. We are allowing something or someone to take God's place in our lives. This is serious business to God. Idolization is adultery to Him; it hurts Him as much as we hurt when friends betray their loyalty to us. He wants to have that place in our lives. He will give us more meaning and worth and acceptance than any "significant other" ever could. Both Christ and the Apostle Paul taught in the Bible that remaining dependent on God is easier when one is single. When one is married, it is easy to put one's spouse in God's place, to expect him or her to meet the needs that only God can fill. Marriage does not legitimize idolization. God still wants His rightful place in our hearts regardless of our marital status. Should we avoid marriage then? Of course not! God calls some to serve Him in a marriage relationship. He chooses to meet some people's needs through marriage. But not all. For some He chooses to meet needs through a variety of people. God wants some of us to be single so that we can serve Him in ways those who are married cannot. But we can be sure that God will meet everyone's needs, married or single. We can also be sure that God wants all of us to commit our lives to Him, married or single. Singleness is not an excuse to live our lives for ourselves, or to sit around waiting for life to happen. It is happening, and we are each responsible to take what opportunities God has given us and use them to their fullest advantage. Yes, I'm complete. You're complete. And it has nothing to do with whether or not we're married. It has everything to do with the fact that Christ lives in us and with Him we are not only complete, we have everything we need to live the life of a fulfilled, successful adult. Horst, F. Q: What did Adam say on the day before Christmas? A: It's Christmas, Eve! Q: How do we know that Jesus raised vegetables? A: Because he said. "Peas be upon you." (Peace be upon you). Q: Who built a big boat, and saved the animals from the Flood? A: Noah. Noah and the Ark (which is what they called the boat) is a well-known story, and if you like, you can read about it in Genesis (the first book in the Bible) chapter 7.
