NEW DEVELOPMENT IN THE INDUSTRY

We often hear about brilliant kids who’ve grown up and taken the reins of a family business. Sometimes we hear about great entrepreneurs who’ve switched fields. But, it is very rare to discover a successful pro athlete, in his naturally young retirement, choosing a new career in our own industry. This is one of those unique stories. Currently, major league baseball player Brandon Dixon is transitioning to private life, and with the full global spectrum of career opportunities wide open to him, he has elected a future as a southern California business owner in the heavyequipment industry of commercial pavement sweeping.

NEW ENTREPRENEURIAL CAREER ADVENTURE

Asked how he discovered the industry and what motivated him to become a part of it, Brandon recounts the transformative changes in his life over recent months, “I was playing baseball (for the San Diego Padres) till mid-October last year. I knew it was kind of toward the end of my career. I had been looking for a business. A business partner of mine told me about this opportunity and it sounded ideal for me.

We’ve seen quite a bit of success so far. I think we’ve multiplied our revenues by about 3 to 4 times what it was when we bought the company in November. It’s a big transition and a totally different atmosphere. But, I’m really enjoying this business and the learning aspect of this new challenge. I’ve reached out to others in this industry who’ve been around. I’ve been asking a lot of questions and so many people have been very gracious with their time to help me learn. It’s been fun to meet them and learn the business.”

RETIRED PRO BASEBALL PLAYER BECOMES CA BUSINESS OWNER

The Detroit Tigers had grabbed Dixon in 2018, and he had an outstanding year with the team in 2019. He hit .248/.290/.435 in 420 at-bats and led the team with 15 home runs that season. Throughout his career in the major leagues, Dixon hit .224/.266/.397, with 22 home runs and 32 doubles. At the Triple-A level, in 1100 at-bats, he achieved an impressive record of .286/.349/.518.

As a San Diego native, the last two years of Brandon’s career were the realization of his dream of ultimately playing with the Padres. In

his publicized departure from baseball, Brandon expressed his gratitude for the many great relationships and experiences he had gained over his years in the league and all the support he had received over the years.

Reflecting on his baseball years, he is quoted as saying, “It’s been a fun journey, from a kid dreaming of the big leagues to getting to play for my hometown team. Thank you to everyone who was part of it.”

BRANDON DIXON ACHIEVES RAPID GROWTH BY ACQUISITION

Cleaner Streets, the Oxnard company now owned by Brandon Dixon, was formerly Pacific Sweep, founded in 1984 in Somis, CA. The company grew steadily over the following 20 years or so. In 2016, the previous owners expanded the business and moved to Camarillo.

Today, Cleaner Streets operates from a modernized administrative and customer service facility and a 3-acre commercial equipment yard. Since Brandon’s acquisition of Pacific Sweep in May 2023, the business has expanded its services under his direction, and he has worked on rebranding the company as Cleaner Streets.

The former owner had sold the company on an owner-financing arrangement, but the business began failing under the new operator and finally, the seller had to come out of retirement and resume management of the business. Brandon has a business partner who mentioned to him that acquiring the company was a possibility.

BRANDON DIXON’S INDUSTRY TEAM

Currently, Cleaner Streets has 3 full-time employees, plus Brandon, and his business partner who handles the financials, for a total of a 5-person team. Brandon noted the company’s current plan, “Our focus at this stage is to make the most of our

opportunities with the equipment we have.

We just want to get more involved with the community and connect with the property managers and people in industries that may have a need for our services. Acquiring other businesses is a possibility. I would definitely have that conversation if the right situation presents itself.”

BUILDING GOOD SYSTEMS AND PROCESSES

Our radius is about 60 to 100 miles. It’s a pretty large population we can serve.

Cleaner Streets currently has 3 vacuum sweeper trucks, 2 mechanical broom trucks, and a parts truck. Most of those, or all, are usually running routes,

depending on needs on any given day. Brandon notes, “Here in California there are a lot of carbon emissions laws. We’ve sold off most of the equipment that wasn’t meeting regulations. Currently, we service Ventura County. We go to Valencia and Santa Rita, and we’ve done work in LA. Our radius is about 60 to 100 miles. It’s a pretty large population we can serve. There is competition. Most have been bought by SCA (Sweeping Corporation of America). They’ve bought two or three sweeping businesses in our area, and they focus mostly on municipal contracts.”

Brandon Dixon may be a new player in the commercial business world but he speaks like a marketing veteran. CLEANER STREETS AND BRANDON DIXON, NEW TO NAPSA

When asked if he has plans to join NAPSA (North American Power Sweeping Association), Brandon announced, “I just finished the registration about a week ago with NAPSA. I would say that one of the bigger challenges is not having any expert in the industry here in-house, not having ready answers

from someone who knows how to resolve this or that issue that is pivotal to our success.

We are learning from scratch how to do things most efficiently and to keep trucks on the road maintenance-wise. I would say that maintenance is the hardest part so far. I’m looking forward to gaining more knowledge through NAPSA.

Also, developing our strategy – which types of service make the most sense for us to provide is key right now. We had contracts in place for a little bit of everything. We’re seeing a lot of growth in the construction and HOA space. At this point, everything I face, I have to Google and find someone who knows what I need to know and is willing to

help with answers.

Being a first-time business owner in an industry I wasn’t aware of has been quite a learning experience in the last 6 months. I’m not where I want to be in my understanding of it, but I’m excited to be learning about it and am happy with my growth in knowledge over these months.”

ADVICE FOR OTHER INDUSTRY NEWCOMERS FROM BRANDON DIXON

We asked Brandon what advice he could offer to other new market entrants at this early stage of his entrepreneurial journey in the commercial pavement sweeping industry. “Ask a lot of questions. Reach out to people. I was surprised, I thought people wouldn’t

want to talk and that they would just see me as a competitor. But they’ve been so helpful.

If you’re curious, reach out to me. I’m learning but I’ve connected with enough people by now that I can find the answers to questions. There’s a lot of information. Have fun with it!

Make connections. Reach out to people, companies, industry news services, and related services like striping, seal coating, milling company owners, and others. They may need a sweeping service or know others who do. See if you can be that guy. That’s the process we’ve done. And, use the web to your best advantage. Work on your SEO.

We’re not yet in a position where we can rely on word-of-mouth to grow our business. And, it’s an expensive business to be in. We’ve really got to work to keep the margins up. It’s like a game of chess. I think the best advice is to keep learning.”

9 STEPS FOR BUILDING YOUR BUSINESS’S REGIONAL ONLINE REPUTATION

ASSOCIA TION INSIDER

SPOTLIGHT INDEX

If you’re keeping up with the growing trends in branding, you probably know that everything to do with branding sprouts and develops online. From Google My Business to SEO, to personalize email campaigns, to local community impact programs, and on and on. It’s all about building an online reputation. It’s the culmination of your work to get your business not just noticed in your local market but to make it stand out as the best quality and most reliable of all the options.

Sounds hard? No, it’s actually not, at least not compared to the measures small business owners had to take just a generation ago. Those were incomparably more expensive and time-consuming and much, much less consistently effective than simply making a smart investment in your online operations. Marketing has come a long way in the past 15 years to make life more convenient and profitable for entrepreneurs.

ULTRA-CONVENIENT MODERN MARKETING

Business owners of old lived in the days of newspaper, magazine, radio, and TV ad saturation, snail mail ads, billboards, vehicle wraps, mall kiosks, hand-distributed flyers, and human directives. (That last one means having a live person stand outside your business,

possibly in a rabbit, bear, or Batman costume, etc., waving a sign and beckoning passersby to come on in and see what you’re offering.)

Sounds rough? Yes, it was. By contrast, now you just need a good SEO guy or gal to implement important recommendations on how to boost your online reputation to attract maximum traffic to your website. That applies to every local market in which you want to operate and grow.

WHAT DOES “ONLINE REPUTATION” INVOLVE?

The process of online reputation building per se is less broadly familiar among small business owners at this point than other critical cybermarketing methods. But, it just amounts to a comparatively uncomplicated set of SEO steps. And, it can make the difference for

20 NORTH AMERICAN SWEEPER MAY 2024 Visit Us BUSINESS CORNER

commercial pavement sweeping business owners who are poorly represented in their markets due to insufficient or incomplete site, social, ad, ratings, reviews, quality backlinks, and/or other setups for search engines.

HOW TO BUILD A STELLAR ONLINE REPUTATION FOR YOUR BUSINESS

First, unless you or someone on your team is very proficient with web analytics, you should strongly consider getting some professional help to make the necessary changes to your overall web presence. Your general web profile consists of many elements that are too many and far-flung for you to locate them all efficiently and methodically figure out how to counter them effectively.

Just some of the components of your personal and business reputation include customer reviews, star ratings, social media comments, legal documents, photo images, news articles, and much more. To see where you stand and devise

a strategy to recover from negative or mundane impressions cast on your company across the internet, you’ll need to identify all the negative entries and counteract them abundantly.

After you succeed in cleaning up your image online, you’ll need to sustain and build on your new reputation as it evolves through being continuously collectively redefined by others. You need to ensure that you stay out ahead of issues and present your business in its best light when important prospects come to the Google search field to look for a local provider of your kind.

9 STEPS TO BUILDING A WINNING ONLINE REPUTATION FOR YOURSELF AND YOUR BUSINESS

The steps you need to take to improve your company’s online reputation are practical and straightforward. Nothing fancy. And, there’s really very little involved that you don’t already know how to do. But, get help with those tasks requiring web technologies that are unfamiliar to you.

Here are the 9 essential steps to developing the strong online reputation you need to maximize your ROI in the short term and grow your business over time:

1. Monitor your online reputation. Use web monitoring tools (like Brand Grader and other types) to learn what’s working and what’s not working for you in blogs, review sites, forums, news sites, social platforms, on your website, influencers’ pages, etc.

2. Create an online review strategy. Online reviews are often the first thing people see on the first SERP when they Google your company

name. But people usually only leave a review when they want to complain to the world about a bad experience. To prevent mad customers from defining your hard-working team, take steps like enhancing presentations of your official profile, monitoring review sites, responding to negative reviews, etc.

3. Keep your promises and be consistent. Honoring your word with everyone you deal with, including employees, vendors, neighboring businesses, customers, and industry peers is the right way to build a stellar online reputation. If you’ve promised someone you’ll resolve an issue, meet a deadline, etc., following through every

single time is the key to defining your business and yourself for the world around you.

4. Publish engaging, high-value original content. Establish yourself as the go-to local expert in your industry by showcasing your knowledge, insights, and opinions. Help others by providing industry thought leadership. You may opt to conduct webinars, podcasts, videos, and even online courses. Publish blogs and guest blogs. Give interviews, engage on social platforms, and collaborate. Offer input on reputable sites, in online communities. And, of course, engage with your local community offline.

Influencer marketing has proven to be effective. Major brands generate substantial revenues by working with bloggers on retail campaigns. Whatever you do to upgrade your online reputation, let’s face it — you and your commercial sweeping company will forever be evaluated relative to your strongest competitor. The question for your target audience members will always be about who they like better: you or your competition. So, you need to understand what the competitor is doing right or wrong. That enables you to learn from their mistakes and reverse engineer their successful strategies.

REVIEW OF SUBCONTRACTING: When To Hire and How To Manage

SPOTLIGHT INDEX

As the demand for clean streets and smooth surfaces rises, contractors in the street sweeping and paving industry are increasingly turning to subcontracting to meet clients’ deadlines, maintain standards and expand their reach. However, like every other strategy in business, subcontracting requires a firm grasp of its basic concepts to ensure project success and profitability.

In this article, we’ll explore two key fundamentals of subcontracting — when to hire a subcontracting service and How to manage a subcontracting service — that you must know and implement as a street sweeping and paving contractor if you must enjoy real benefits.

Let’s delve in!

WHEN TO HIRE A SUBCONTRACTING SERVICE

Your street sweeping and paving business can gain a real advantage when you enlist subcontractors at the right time and for the right

purpose. Whether it’s the adaptability to adjust operations based on economic fluctuations or the ability to access specialized expertise for specific project tasks, hiring subcontractors when they are most needed makes all the difference.

Provide Expert Services

specifications from start to finish. Choosing the right subcontractor, outlining clear expectations and adequate scheduling are a few ways you can effectively manage your subcontracted services.

Choose the Right Subcontractor

The selection of subcontractor partners is crucial as they play a pivotal role in executing specialized tasks. This is because their performance impacts project quality, timelines, and outcomes. Choosing the right subcontractor lays the foundation for a well-executed project.

Proactively Manage Budgets

Subcontractor bids should be carefully examined to ensure competitiveness and alignment with
