With options as varied as the Nebraska weather, sports enthusiasts will never lack for something to do. The list includes tennis and racquetball courts, softball and soccer fields, shooting parks, bowling alleys, a roller-skating rink, and more. Here are a few highlights: Grand Island’s 80-acre Veterans Athletic Field Complex has four lighted softball and soccer fields, with plans underway for expansion. This complex hosts over 5,000 baseball and softball players each year. Our 70,000 square foot Community Fieldhouse features a portable synthetic turf floor, an indoor playground, and a sports floor for soccer, flag football, volleyball, basketball, and baseball.

As a parent with an active family, quality parks and trail systems are very important to me. My children essentially learned to ride their bikes on the trail system, and I myself, grew up spending lots of time in all of our city parks. As we prioritize our finances within a budget, I certainly want to make sure that there are always dollars available – at some level – to continue offering these same options to the next generation.

Golfers will be pleased to discover four public and private courses, including Jackrabbit Run, an 18-hole public course selected as one of the top public golf courses in the midlands by the Omaha World Herald. Fitness enthusiasts will enjoy 15 miles of offstreet recreation trails running throughout the city. A 25-mile trail extension to scenic rural areas is also being planned. And when you just want to enjoy some good old-fashioned outdoor fun, Grand Island’s many parks offer picnic areas, bandstands, sledding areas, frisbee golf courses, and horseshoe courts.

enjoying an active cultural scene There’s no need to drive far and wide for a night on the town, to show off your artistic side, or to enjoy a little bit of culture. Grand Island’s art shows and galleries showcase the works of talented Nebraska artists. Art in the Park, held each year in July in shady Stolley Park, is a can’t-miss event, featuring works in every medium from regional artists. The Grand Island Little Theatre (GILT) delights audiences with a lively assortment of productions featuring local talent, at the Hornady-Marshall Theater at College Park. Their summer program, GILT Jr., is a week-long theatre camp for students that teaches kids about all aspects of theatre and culminates in a final performance for a live audience. Residents and visitors enjoy frequent live performances by professional musicians or entertainers scheduled by the Grand Island Concert Association. All concerts are presented in the Grand Island Senior High School Auditorium. Movie buffs will appreciate the numerous theaters in Grand Island. The historic Grand Theatre shows second-run films, and often hosts live music, speakers and comedians. This art-deco style theatre is operated by a non-profit organization dedicated to its preservation. Grand Island residents find the information they need at the Edith Abbott Memorial Library. With well over 100,000 volumes, this truly vibrant facility offers a spacious children’s section, meeting rooms, and cutting-edge technologies.

In 1857, German settlers left Iowa and headed west to Nebraska to start a new settlement on an island known by French traders as La Grande Isle. By the summer of 1868, the Union Pacific railroad extended to Grand Island, and it had a big impact on the growth and prosperity of Grand Island. The city boomed in the 1880s and survived a devastating recession in the 1890s. The arrival of the Lincoln highway in 1916 furthered tourism, commerce and development. Today, Grand Island is a thriving metropolitan city. Grand Island is Nebraska’s fourth largest city, birthplace of actor Henry Fonda, three time All-American City (1955, 1967, and 1981), and 1997 Outstanding Nebraska Community. World Trade Magazine ranked Grand Island 9th in the Top 10 List of Smaller Communities with an excellent quality of life.

Dedicated to the farmers and ranchers of the Great Plains and western Corn Belt, Husker Harvest Days is an annual outdoor farm show featuring over 80 acres of exhibits and 700 acres of field demonstrations. Billed as the “World’s Largest Totally Irrigated Working Farm Show,” over 100,000 visitors come to this three-day event held each September, that showcases the latest in agricultural equipment and technology. Recognized by the “Guinness Book of Records” for hosting the most marching bands, the Harvest of Harmony Parade takes place every year on the first Saturday of October. Nebraska’s largest parade attracts approximately 100 high school bands and 80 floats for a parade competition downtown, and a field show competition at Grand Island Senior High School.

The Heartland Hoops Classic is a unique tournament-like event featuring high school basketball teams of different classes in one setting. This annual event is held in February, prior to district play, at the Heartland Events Center. It is the only event of its type in the state. In 2017, Grand Island added two major attractions to their calendar. Rodeo Grand Island takes place in March at the Heartland Event Center and is a nationally televised event that features the biggest names in rodeo and bull riding. The Aksarben Stock Show, the nation’s largest 4-H livestock show, also calls Grand Island home, and it draws thousands of 4-H youth, families, and supporters from across the country. They will make use of the nearly 500,000 square feet of state-of-the-art exhibition, livestock and equine facilities at Fonner Park. The Aksarben Stock Show takes place in late September.

Agriculture, manufacturing and tourism comprise Grand Island’s top three industries. Over 100 manufacturing plants provide jobs for more than 7,000 area residents. As one of the highest per-capita retail centers in the state, shoppers travel to Grand Island from over 200 miles away. • A high number of underemployed workers provide a tremendous pool of prospective employees for local and new business endeavors.

• Nebraska is a Right-to-Work state, which gives employees the freedom to decide whether or not to join or support a union. • Our excellent work ethic, combined with Grand Island’s low cost of living, is attractive to businesses seeking to relocate. • The Nebraska Workforce Development offers programs that match job seekers to job openings, and help business compete in a changing marketplace. To further enhance the area’s workforce, leaders from Grand Island Public Schools, Central Community College, Chamber of Commerce, and the Economic Development Corporation, along with private businesses, have collaborated on the development of the Career Pathways Institute -- a cutting-edge, 21st Century Learning experience for area high school students who are interested in technical or industrial careers that require a high level of specialized training. This project is the result of an increased demand by Grand Island’s existing and prospective businesses for a larger skilled workforce in some of the area’s fastest growing careers. gichamber.com

strengthening the community through leadership

Attractive Economic Development Incentives

40

Residents of Grand Island have demonstrated their commitment to community growth by approving an aggressive economic development program. The Local Option Municipal Economic Development Act, more commonly known as LB840, is managed by the Grand Island Area Economic Development Corporation (GIAEDC).

Incentive programs such as LB840 and Tax Increment Financing (TIF), the abundance of pad-ready industrial site space, an aggressive community marketing plan, and a strong partnership with the Nebraska Department of Economic Development help set Grand Island apart from the competition.

The GIAEDC can offer prospective businesses three industrial park site options; Platte Valley Industrial Park (PVIP) and Platte Valley Industrial Park-East (PVIP-E), located near Interstate 80 on the Highway 281 corridor, and Cornhusker Industrial Park (CIP), located on the western edge of the community. All three options offer prime proximity to Interstate 80; U.S. Highways 281, 30, and 34; and State Highway 2 and are ideal for industrial, manufacturing, commercial, and logistic operations. PVIP and PVIP-E are fully equipped with on-site infrastructure including water, waste water, electricity, ďŹ ber optics, and paved roads.

Together, the Grand Island Area Chamber of Commerce and the Grand Island Area Economic Development Corporation strive to advance and improve the economic, social and political environments of the area so that balanced economic growth may be realized. In short, if you are interested in expanding or locating your business in Grand Island, community leaders will go the extra mile to help make that happen.

With the construction of the Nebraska State Fair facilities at Fonner Park, livestock and agricultural shows have emerged as a strong target market for central Nebraska. From the larger Junior National Hereford Show to the Aksarben Stock Show, events Grand Island could not previously host are now held at the livestock buildings at Fonner Park. To ensure these facilities are marketed in a coordinated, comprehensive fashion, representatives of the Nebraska State Fair, Fonner Park, Chamber of Commerce, and Convention and Visitors Bureau have formed the Grand Island Livestock Complex Authority (GILCA). GILCA representatives collaborate to promote these facilities and communicate the economic impact associated with the national shows. A Grander Vision for the Heartland From this partnership, grew a desire to develop and promote the community as a whole. With the input of thousands, Grand Island and Hall County have formulated a strategy, Grow Grand Island, to enhance its

economic improvement and business development efforts.

Grow Grand Island is a collaborative, regional, existing business retention and expansion program for the community. The success of these efforts rests on the fact that, rather than rely on a singular organization or elected governing body to decide what is best for the community, residents, business leaders, and community leaders all had an opportunity to submit their own ideas on how to improve and market their community. Thousands of face-to-face interviews and surveys were conducted and a tremendous amount of valuable information and feedback was collected. Grow Grand Island is working with a network of partners to provide a variety of support in areas such as workforce development, international trade, entrepreneurship and enhanced educational opportunities. gichamber.com
