“I strive for two things in design: simplicity and clarity. Great design is born of those two things. - Lindon Leader -

GIANINA WIJAYA Graphic Designer & Photographer

If you ask me 2 years ago what would I do in the next few years or what things I would try to do, I don’t think I would say becoming a graphic designer nor a photographer. But somehow and someway this path becomes a part of my adventure in this world. There’s definitely ups and downs during the past 2 years, and I don’t know how much blood, sweat and tears I’ve shed in order to not give up and keep doing my best until the end. But I’ve also experience lots of great opportunities, meet amazing people, and I’ve become more mature in so many aspects; one of them is self-expression. Self Expression is important to others and myself. This is because people tend to forget their own identity and have much insecurity due to the pressure society put on people, in which makes them have less confidence and somehow lead to lack of creativity. With my portfolio book, which consists of my own self-expression through my artworks, and my interactive installation – where people could write their insecurities on their reflections on the mirror, I hope to show people to simply not follow the life standards society has created. Based on my portfolio book and installation, I hope people could be more accepting of themselves and have more courage to express who they are.

SAM SIFTON

The Secret to a Great Chicken Parm: Grill It Summer is upon us, and with it the tyranny of the seasonal menu: all burgers and sausages, slaws and burned vegetables. Grilled chicken parm is a great way to declare independence. Let’s stipulate that chicken parm – crisp chicken served with tomato sauce, draped in mozzarella and anointed with grated Parmesan, served perhaps on a hero roll or beside a tangle of pasta – is among the finest dishes of the Italian diaspora in America. Sweetness and salt, along with the creaminess of cheese and the satisfying crunch of the chicken’s crust, combine to deliver immense satisfaction.

124

Of course, chicken parms aren’t always perfect, as anyone who’s had a leaden one can attest. But as with pizza and your kind-eyed cousin who’s been to jail but never prison, chicken parms are fundamentally decent. They are never really bad.

Tomato sauce serves as a bed for the cheese-covered chicken, which itself sits on top sautéed kale. The result is an Italian flag of a plate, smoke-scented and beautiful. It is a dish that rewards some afternoon planning and precooking with a terrific dinner-party or family meal.

I went to Justin Bazdarich to find out how to make great chicken parm. Bazdarich is the chef and an owner of the Speedy Romeo restaurants in Brooklyn and Manhattan, restaurants known for their pizzas and Midwestern interpretations of Italian-American food, cooked almost exclusively over wood fire and coals. His chicken parm is not precisely a traditional preparation but rates among the best in New York. The chicken is cooked over the indirect heat of the restaurants’ fires until the skin is crisp.

Start by marinating the chicken. Bazdarich massages the flesh with lemon zest and thyme leaves, along with the garlic oil that’s left over from the restaurant’s preparation of garlic chips. Garlic chips don’t play a big role in most home cooking, though, so you can add some minced garlic instead. You could set up the chicken in the morning and be ready to cook it by night. But even 45 minutes of resting in the marinade will deliver good flavor.

For the tomatoes, Bazdarich takes a burr mixer to the contents of a can of San Marzanos. At home, a few pulses of a food processor will do. “We pour the sauce onto a sheet tray and put it in the wood oven,” he said, “though you could do it under a broiler, and allow it to reduce until it’s thick and the fluidity comes out of it.” He puts the cooked tomatoes in a bowl and stirs in good olive oil, then seasons the mixture lightly with salt. “That’s it,” Bazdarich said. And that really is. The high heat concentrates the flavor of the tomatoes, and the olive oil gives it a silky feel: red velvet, fruity and intense. When you’re ready to cook, light a grill, leaving one burner off or one side free of coals. As it heats, sauté some sliced kale until it’s bright green and softened, then set it aside beneath a small scattering of torn basil leaves — as with the tomatoes there’s no need for the greens to be hot when you put the dish together at the end.

To cook the chicken, Bazdarich salts only the fleshy side of the meat, then places the pieces skin-side down on the cooler side of the grill. He leaves it there a long time, keeping a close eye on the skin. “You want to cook the chicken 85 or 90 percent of the way through skin-side down,” Bazdarich said, “so it gets really, really crisp.” Then he turns the pieces and applies a thin slice of mozzarella to each. You can put the top on the grill for a few moments to allow the cheese to melt. Service is a cinch. Spread a generous amount of the tomato sauce on a warmed serving platter, place the sliced kale on top of it and the chicken thighs on top of the kale. Bazdarich showers the dish with a mixture of panko and melted, hardened Parmesan he has whizzed up in a food processor, along with a dusting of ground red-pepper flakes. At home, I make do with straight grated Parmesan and whole red-pepper flakes. It’s terrific.

When the cherry blossom trees bloom for a short time each year in brilliant force, they serve as a visual reminder of how precious and how precarious life is. So, when Japanese people come together to view the cherry blossom trees and marvel at their beauty, they aren’t just thinking about the flowers themselves, but also about the larger meaning and deep cultural tradition the cherry blossom tree.

The cherry blossom tree is truly a sight to behold, especially when it is in full riotous bloom. There are several varieties of the cherry blossom tree, and while most of them produce flowering branches full of small pinkish-hued flowers, some of them produce actual cherries. In Japan, the cherry blossom is more than just a beautiful flowering tree. There are thousands upon thousands of cherry blossom trees in Japan, and each year the Japanese people closely anticipate and follow the blossoming of the trees. When the trees are in bloom, people come in large groups with their families and friends to view the flowers and to enjoy festivals with food, drink, and music.

Peach Pink shade is the perfect color for your weekend date!

You developed a set of contouring sticks for Memebox, and they sold out. What do you think made them so popular? “I think it has to do with convenience and coloring. Sticks are convenient and creams are a forgiving way to contour. Even though the U.S. has many more skin tones [represented] than Korea, I find that a lot of the undertones of products are pink, red, or brown, which is surprising, since Asians aren’t the only ones who have a yellow undertone. I developed my contouring sticks with a yellow to brown undertone and skin colors.”

Use the calm Orange Brown as your daily blusher for that cute and innocent finish to your makeup.

There are so many products out there. How do you go about discovering really amazing ones? “I surf the internet. I don’t like looking at magazines or TV shows in Korea because I used to work at a cosmetics advertising agency and I know how all that works. I basically just go to magazines if I’m curious what new products are out there, but I don’t really trust the reviews.”

The cherry blossom in Japan can symbolize clouds because of their way of blooming. The fallen blossoms symbolize snow; light pink and white blooms collected in piles that look like snow. The transience of the cherry blossoms, the beauty and death, which is often associated with mortality makes the blossoms richly symbolic. As the coldness of winter starts to disappear and the snow starts to melt, cherry blossom could represent hope and new beginnings in life.

Spring is the season you can feel blossom inside of you before you ever see it blossom outside. The significance of the cherry blossom tree in Japanese culture goes back hundreds of years. In their country, the cherry blossom represents the fragility and the beauty of life. It’s a reminder that life is almost overwhelmingly beautiful but that it is also tragically short. You’re a cherry blossom, you’re about to bloom.

cherry blossom the flower of life they say representing love life, new growth death fragrant, a delicate, lingering scent she walks through the branches their blossoms entwined in soft embrace brushing gently against her skin her tears soak into the ground she is enchanting but yet another walking travesty her mind too troubled to see the beauty that surrounds her eyes like the moon awash with silver tears she sleeps under the cherry blossom the flower of life 13

ASIA Countries) they need to change their sim card, buy extra roaming packages or rent a Wi-Fi router. Changing your sim card could create a waste that is hard to recycle, and renting a Wi-Fi router could create a battery waste, which could create more problems to the environment, while buying roaming packages will cost people extra money that they could spend on something more useful. Preface This booklet is about an art movement that focuses on geometrical lines, primary colors as well as black and white, named De Stijl. I get the inspiration to make this booklet and essay because I personally used a lot of geometrical shapes in my artworks, and this style is one of favourite styles. Although it might seem simple and abstract, but there’s this essence of pure aesthetic in the artworks and architecture.

“The demand for pure means of expression, first formulated by De Stijl, has become a fact.” - Theo van Doesburg -

References Self Analysis De Stijl has become one of the most influential art movements or style for the past few decades, and definitely has become one of the style that actually still happening in our daily lives. In the perspective of a Graphic Design view, it is one of the simplest yet full of power to attract people or consumer or client. This style has a modern look that won’t be able to be forgotten for many years to come. Because De Stijl is a simple design style that can be so bold, and very interesting

Born 8 November 1887 in Rotterdam, Netherlands as Robbert van ‘t Hoff. He was a Dutch Architect and Furniture designer. (Wikipedia 2016). From 1906 he studied at the School of Art, Birmingham for 5 years, then for another 3 years he studied at the London Architectural Association, and published his own draft. Then from June 1913 to July 1914 he went to America and meets Frank Lloyd Wright. On 1916 he made his first contacts with Theo van Doesburg and Oud, and the next year he was founding member of the De Stijl. From 1917 to 1918 he design a boat named De Stijl with De Stijl interior, and the same year he also built a studio for Bart van der Leck. On 1919, he tried to gain support with P. Alma for Soviet artists in an international campaign. Unfortunately, on the same year, due to negative attitude, he breaks with van Doesburg, left De Stijl, and sold his boat. On 1922 he moved to UK and 6 years later, after an unsuccessful attempt to built a community in Coopersburg, Pennsylvania, he went back to Laren, where he had build two traditional houses with simple furniture, each for his mother and himself after the break with van Doesburg. On 1931 he moved to Switzerland, and 6 years later he moved to UK. He died on 25 April 1979 in New Milton, South England (Warncke 1994, p. 208).

De Stijl Movement Mr. Angga Research about the one of many art movement that inspires us. De Stijl ,Dutch for “The Style”, also known as neoplasticism, was a Dutch artistic movement founded in 1917 in Amsterdam. Proponents of De Stijl advocated pure abstraction and universality by a reduction to the essentials of form and colour; they simplified visual compositions to vertical and horizontal, using only black, white and primary colors.

The World Heritage Committee inscribed the Rietveld Schrรถder House on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites on 2 December 2000, during the 24th session in Cairns, Australia. The committee decided to apply criterion i and ii, and said about the house: The Rietveld Schrรถderhuis in Utrecht is an icon of the Modern Movement in architecture and an outstanding expression of human creative genius in its purity of ideas and concepts as developed by the De Stijl movement. (...) With its radical approach to design and the use of space, the Rietveld Schrรถderhuis occupies a seminal position in the development of architecture in the modern age.
