NATIVE PEOPLES
ON POWER AND HEALING
:
THE ROLE OF THE MBENDJELE WOMEN Words by Bruce Parry This is an essay I wrote to go with my film Tawai: A Voice from the Forest. The film took seven years to make, and attempted to go a little deeper into the areas that affected me deeply on my previous travels. It forms the basis of the new project I’m working on, which is all about the role of the Mbendjele women in maintaining balance in their society. It also touches upon what I learned from them about using their female power to diffuse competition and aggression and, most interestingly of all, how to successfully revolutionise society.
