Members in the News Homestead’s Ruth Campbell and Florida City Vice Mayor Roy S. Shiver were honored during the Miami-Dade County Days at the state Capitol this month. Homestead’s Ruth Campbell and Florida City Vice Mayor Roy S. Shiver were honored during the Miami-Dade County Days at the state Capitol this month. The annual Miami-Dade County Days is a three day celebration when leaders and elected officials from Miami-Dade municipalities visit Tallahassee during the legislative session. Campbell was awarded the Sherman Winn ‘I Care’ Award. The honor, named after the late Senator, is given to a person who has made a positive difference in their community. For more than three decades she has devoted her life to public service and to the City of Homestead. “I am so happy to have won this award,” Campbell said. “It shows that what we are doing here in Homestead is being noticed.” She was the first woman elected to the Homestead City Council in 1963 and in 1997 when she did not seek re-election she was given the title of “Honorary Mayor of Krome Avenue.” Campbell was involved in numerous civic organizations during her tenure and continues to be very active in the Homestead community. She is currently the museum director and local historian of the Historic Homestead Town Hall Museum. Through her efforts, she has committed herself to developing an awareness and appreciation for the City’s historic assets and an urgency for preservation. She has also served on local, state and national boards. Shiver received the Sen. Ron Silver ‘Dean’ Award, for his 50 years of service as an elected official in FloridaCity. Shiver was first elected to the commission in 1964 and is the longest standing municipal elected official in the entire state of Florida. During his time on the commission, Shiver has overseen the Police Department among many other facets of the city. Shiver commented on how proud he is with the growth of the Police Department over the years. “When I was elected there were just two patrolmen and one car,” Shiver said. Shiver stated he was surprised and honored to receive the award. “I’ve served 50 out of FloridaCity’s 100 years,” Shiver said. “I’ve seen this town grow and progress. I have tried to help the residents as best as I can, and I have kept them happy. It is really an honor.” Along with being on the commission, Shiver has served on numerous boards during his tenure. Last week he was named to the Florida League of Cities board. “I got a letter that said ‘Welcome Home’,” Shiver said. “Being on this board will continue to help our city.” By Mike Dill Sat, Apr 19, 2014 South Dade News Leader

The Powering Florida Resource Center provides economic development organizations with information and tools that enable them to more effectively market their community, including: Analyze industry sectors relevant to their geographic area Better target companies for recruitment - PoweringFlorida® Access complete community profiles for labor force, demographics and available real estate. - See more at: http://www.poweringflorida.com/#sthash.TPPdfkWT.dpuf

Eric believes that our community has a great opportunity in the aerospace industry. After the meeting he took a ride around the community with FPL's Mike Kiley and what he saw reinforced this view. As NASA’s role continues to change, private aerospace companies are playing increasingly important roles in space exploration. Florida must aggressively compete to remain the preeminent location for private spaceflight activities, engage in more research and development and capitalize on Florida’s bright space industry talent supply. Florida’s aerospace industry helps to generate bold economic development initiatives and brings much needed jobs not only to Florida’s Space Coast, but throughout the state.
