Members in the News Baptist Health Recognized as One of 2014 World’s Most Ethical Companies 03-27-2014 Ethisphere Institute honors Baptist Health for fourth straight year The Ethisphere Institute, an independent research center that promotes best practices in corporate ethics and governance, today announced that it has named Baptist Health South Florida one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies for the fourth straight year. The list highlights organizations that continue to raise the bar on ethical leadership and corporate behavior. This year’s honorees span 41 industries, 22 countries and five continents. Baptist Health’s focus on ethical practices includes a detailed code of ethics covering standards and values and outlining specific regulations and procedures, a strict conflict-of-interest policy and a vendor relations policy. It has a corporate compliance program, in place for more than 16 years, with a chief compliance officer who reports directly to the board of directors. “Through their everyday interactions, our Board members, employees, physicians, donors and volunteers hold themselves to the highest ethical standards for our patients and the communities we serve, said Brian E. Keeley, president and chief executive officer of Baptist Health South Florida. “They simply do the right thing, and they deserve this prestigious recognition.” For this eighth annual listing of the World’s Most Ethical Companies, the Ethisphere Institute assessed companies’ performance based on its “Ethics Quotient” framework, generating scores in five key categories: ethics and compliance program (25%), reputation, leadership and innovation (20%), governance (10%), corporate citizenship and responsibility (25%) and culture of ethics (20%). The Ethics Quotient framework and methodology were determined, vetted and refined with expert advice and insights gleaned from Ethisphere’s network of thought leaders and from the World’s Most Ethical Company Methodology Advisory Panel. Homestead Women's Club Celebrates 100 Years By Bob Jensen Fri, Mar 14, 2014- South Dade News Leader When you think of the Woman’s Club of Homestead, think of their projects, many behind the scenes, not just their beautiful clubhouse and their generosity in its use over the years. Homestead and South Miami-Dade’s oldest civic organization, the Woman’s Club of Homestead is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. The Woman’s club is responsible for some of the greatest accomplishments in the community’s history. Some of these great accomplishments came at a time when women could not even vote, but they surely knew what needed to be done in the community and how to get it done. It was not until the 19th Amendment was passed in 1919 that women could vote. Florida’s first state park, Royal Palm State Park in the Everglades, was a Florida Federation of Women’s Clubs project. The Homestead club was formed on September 26, 1914 at the Evans Hotel, now the Hotel Redland. The club was organized primarily to lead the local efforts in establishing a state park in the Everglades, but its first task completed was to outfit the domestic science (home economics) department of the Homestead School. Also in its first year of existence, the club solicited donations of grapefruit, shipped an entire railroad car of the fruit to New York, sold it and donated the money, $823, to the Red Cross to aid those who suffered from World War I. By July of 1915, the club had established a lending library at the Evans Hotel. (The lounge at the Hotel Redland is appropriately named The Library for that reason.) Other Women’s Clubs were organized in Princeton, Redland, and Longview (the club house still exists across the street north of the Robert is Here fruit stand). May Mann Jennings, president of the Florida Federation of Women’s Clubs took as a major project in 1914 the preservation of the Everglades. One of her strongest supporters was FFWC conservation chairman Mrs. Kirk Munroe of Coconut Grove. Click here to read the full article.

The traveling wall, which is six feet tall at the center with each wing 144 feet long, pays tribute to more than 58,000 Americans who died, or who are listed as Missing In Action, during the Vietnam conflict from 1959 to 1975. The traveling wall is a reminder of the ultimate sacrifices made by American men and women during the Vietnam War. It was made to help Vietnam veterans and their families and friends heal from the pain and suffering of the war and to rekindle friendships of long ago in a place so far away. It allows Americans, not able to make the trip to Washington, D.C., a chance to see what the memorial is really like. And for those who have already seen the wall, it is an opportunity to again pay tribute to those who were lost. The Wall will be erected by volunteers at Key Largo Community Park in the upper Florida Keys during early April, 2014. The site will be open to the public April 11 – 14, from 9:00 am – 9:00 pm daily. Admission is free. The opening ceremony will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, April 11, 2014. The closing ceremony will take place on Monday, April 14, 2014 at 6:00 pm. Please note that we will make reasonable accommodations for people with disabilities. We hope your visit to The Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall will be healing, educational and profoundly moving. Please remember that many visitors lost friends and family members during the war. They are visiting the Memorial to pay respect to those who served or lost their lives during the war. There are plenty of opportunities to volunteer for the Memorial Display. If you are interested, contact us for more information or call 305-852-3872. Don’t miss this opportunity to remember those who fought for our Country. Take part in honoring the “courage, sacrifice and devotion to duty and country” of all who answered the call to serve during the long Vietnam War.

Trustees of the Chamber The Chamber Trustees are leaders in our community who recognize that their business success and failure is tied to the area around them. In taking a leadership position, the Trustees are insuring their future success by reinvesting in the local business community through the Greater Homestead/Florida City Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber Trustees voluntarily contribute more than required because they believe in the important programs of the Greater Homestead/Florida City Chamber of Commerce. They understand that the prominence of their organization makes it appropriate for them to assume the role of a substantial participant and contributor to the Chamber’s operation. Members like this refuse to let the burden of improving the business climate and our local quality of life fall on others. Trustee contributions make it possible to maintain the Chamber’s day to day operations with an efficient and professional staff who, in turn, bring more and better programs to the business community.
