Chamber Of Commerce As Homestead and Florida City incorporated, the Chamber of Commerce was not far behind. In the course of more people arriving in the area, stores, packing houses, banks, churches, schools, and other businesses were established. With Homestead’s incorporation in 1913 and Florida City in 1914, the Chamber was established in 1915 with twentyfour charter members. Then as now, the Chamber worked as a part of a team with Homestead, Florida City, and the surrounding communities to make South Dade a better place to do business and raise a family. Bob Jensen, one of our local historians, has been invaluable in capturing the details quoted in this directory. S.E. "Sid" Livingston was elected as the first chamber president; Dr. J.B. Tower, vice president; and pioneer banker H.R. Pridgen, secretary-treasurer. Sid Livingston was also Homestead's first city clerk, secretary-treasurer of Homestead's major business, the Homestead Mercantile Company, mayor for several terms in three different decades, justice of the peace, postmaster, local school board trustee, and a member of the Dade County School Board. The Chamber was reorganized in late November of 1917 and was renamed the South Dade Chamber of Commerce. Two key issues were the action of the Farm Loan Board in turning down applications for loans from this locality and organizing a celebration for the formal acceptance of Homestead's first "electric lighting system." The 1917 election of officers saw Bank of Homestead cashier W.M. Bradley elected president. A regional look was achieved with A.L. Hearn of Silver Palm elected VP; Lewis Twyman of Homestead, secretary; P.L. Carlton of Modello, assistant secretary, and O.B. Parker of Redland, treasurer. Maintaining momentum was an early problem, and the Chamber reorganized again in December, 1918 and in July, 1920. Another reorganization took place in September of 1923 and the name Redland District Chamber of Commerce was adopted. That reorganization called for directors to be elected from these districts: Homestead (6 seats), Florida City (3 seats) and one each from Redland, Silver Palm, Modello, Naranja, Princeton, and Goulds. A fine new building adjoining old City Hall to the south was built in 1924, but the frenetic land boom of the 1920s brought much activity and the subsequent collapse in 1926 was followed by the Great Depression. Among actions to help spur the economy, the Chamber was involved in establishing an annual Fruit Festival, creating Bayfront Park, an effort to extend Krome Avenue north and widen Highway 1, supporting the establishment of Homestead Army Airfield and other war time efforts, and continuing to promote the area for tourism. One more reorganization occurred in 1949, and a new location on North Flagler Ave came about in 1960 as cultural and demographic changes began to alter the area’s dynamics. It was the devastation of Hurricane Andrew in 1992 and the subsequent closure of Homestead Air Force Base, however, that challenged residents and businesses alike. The Chamber of Commerce has worked steadfastly with the local municipal governments, the county, and the state as applicable through the rebuilding of those difficult years; the result of which can be seen today in new economic growth and a population that have grown many times over in numbers and diversity. We honor the past of our agricultural heritage and the rich natural beauty of our unique environment as we look to the future. The exhilaration of the Homestead-Miami Speedway, the hallmark of Homestead Air Reserve Base, the revitalization of educational opportunities, the technological advancements with additions to Turkey Point Nuclear Plant, the new Homestead Hospital, gems of arts and culture, and all the businesses that provide goods and services are vital parts of our communities.
