WELCOME

Dear Readers, rt is always the end product of creative endeavors by human beings. Artistic creations show the world as the artist sees it. They can also open up new perspectives of the world and all it contains. This is also true for the relationship between women and art. For a large part of human history, women did not have a creative role in art, and even less so in architecture. Throughout the ages, they were merely objects viewed through the different points of view held by artists and societies. In antiquity, women were almost exclusively represented as goddesses or in rituals. Later, images of women were restricted to clichés: Madonnas, peasant women, priestesses or mothers. Only the modern age, with its increasing emancipation of women, brought about a change. For the first time, women were in a position to take part in creating art, to develop and assert their own perspectives. Exponents of this development in literature include Jane Austen, Emily Brontë, George Sand, Doris Lessing and Simone de Beauvoir. Paula Modersohn-Becker, Käthe Kollwitz, Camille Claudel, Frida Kahlo and Niki de Saint Phalle are examples in the plastic and graphic arts. Whether there are specifically female, feminine or women’s perspectives is still a matter for discussion. New perspectives and insights are, however, crucial. A new outlook, or perspective, can ultimately change the world. This is also true for Cindy Sherman, who is making art history with her conceptual photographs in which she offers a new viewpoint, an insight into her inner world. Peggy Guggenheim, a gifted collector and gallery owner – and, in her time, deemed to be an “expert in matters of taste” – is another paradigm for someone discovering new ways of viewing the world. We have dedicated this current edition to her and other women who make art or represent the arts. This is partly because new perspectives in art, culture and architecture have always been at the heart of GG magazine. In this edition, we demonstrate this, once again, by showcasing the most beautiful houses and apartments from around the world. Sincerely

WELCOME

Hello, Ladies! A lot is happening in contemporary art. Even though male artists still do command higher prices than their female colleagues, more and more interesting women are imprinting our time. Some low-key and discreetly behind the scenes, like Swiss collector and patron of the arts Maja Hoffmann, whose LUMA foundation has just opened a new art center in Arles designed by Frank Gehry: the Fondation Vincent Van Gogh Arles was supposedly built for a sum of estimated 100 million euros. A modern-day Peggy Guggenheim, who dedicated her whole life to arts(see profile on page 48). Other visionaries include gallery owner Monika Sprueth (of Sprueth Magers), who particularly represented female artists like Jenny Holzer, Barbara Kruger and the now world-famous photographer Cindy Sherman in her first gallery in Cologne in 1983. Today Sherman is considered as one of the most important female artist of our time: one of the many reasons to profile the illustrious American in this edition of GG. We also feature Michaela de Pury, who experienced one of the art world’s most charming love stories with her husband Simon. The sudden departure of the power couple from Phillips de Pury rang out thunder. Read all about their new life and their first home together in London on page 32.

We hope you enjoy our “Ladies of Art” edition.

THANK YOU CONTRIBUTORS

Welcome 1 ANNA GEHRMANN-PHILIPPI

Since the beginning of March, Anna Gehrmann-Philippi has been supporting the GG team as a graphic designer. A native of Poland, she studied graphic arts, painting and photography at Kassel Art College. Anna then worked as a freelance photographer for Die Zeit, Frankfurter Rundschau and Maxi among other publications, before focusing on graphic design. She lives in Hamburg with her family, and enjoys skiing and traveling through North America with no fixed itinerary. Welcome, Anna!

Welcome 2 ALEXANDER HALTER

After studying education, sociology, and industrial and social psychology at the universities of Munich and Göttingen, Alexander Halter founded the advertecs company, which organizes “CampusTV” at different universities. A Hamburg resident since 2012, he is a great fan of Ireland, and loves photography and reading. Over the next year, however, he will need to rein in his love of travel just a little bit as he will be covering for GG’s current managing editor who has taken parental leave. Welcome, Alexander!

London calling The art expert MARTIN TSCHECHNE

A former copy editor at Art magazine and editor-in-chief of Weltkunst, Martin Tschechne has been fascinated by the New York art scene for many years. He has interviewed gallery owners Leo Castelli and Larry Gagosian, artists Larry Rivers, Sean Scully and Christo – and paid his respects at the tree where Jackson Pollock died in a car crash. In this edition of GG, he profiles the world’s most highly paid photographic artist, Cindy Sherman. What surprised him most was the conventional interior of her home ….

EVA STEIDL

Her interview with Faye Toogood started off in brilliant sunshine and ended in a downpour: that’s London for you – never boring. Just around the corner from Toogood’s studio is the UK’s first-ever organic pub, which also happens to be Eva Steidl’s favorite. The writer also finds that gardening is a great pastime in England. However, she spends most of her time out and about, reporting on design and architecture, because there is always something new to discover in her adopted home ….

Boundless energy Lured by the sea BEATRIX EIKEL

10

Beatrix Eikel has always felt drawn to the Mediterranean. She loves the colors and smells, the cuisine and the way of life. At the age of 40, she turned her dream into reality by quitting her job as a bank manager and leaving Germany for the South of France. After twelve years in Mougins, she moved to the coast, where she manages the Engel & Völkers office in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat. She says: “My way to work is like a dream: I start off at Mont Boron in Nice and go around the Rade de Villefranche.”

TATJANA SEEL

Mountaineering in the summer, skiing in the winter: Tatjana Seel (pictured here at the Naunspitze peak in the Austrian Alps) loves mountains and being outdoors. A native of Rottal in Lower Bavaria, she now lives near Lake Starnberg, south of Munich. From there, the author travels around the world to meet the personalities that feature in her stories, and to research her travel reports. For GG, she has turned her attention to the Côte d’Azur and the creative artists who once lived there.

Renoir, Matisse, Picasso – many artists were drawn to the Côte d’Azur in the South of France. They went there hoping the mild climate would ease their ailments, and stayed because the incredible light inspired their work. Cagnes-sur-Mer, Nice, Vence, Antibes and Vallauris all have museums and numerous other cultural sites offering visitors a glimpse into the famous artists’ life and work. The building complex housing the Maeght Foundation in Saint-Paul-de-Vence was designed by the architect Josep Lluís Sert in cooperation with Joan Miró and Georges Braque.

Over 200 years ago, British winter vacationers discovered the French Riviera between Nice and Cannes. They were followed by aristocrats and painters. Auguste Renoir, Marc Chagall, Fernand Léger and Henri Matisse. All the influential artists of the 20th century were drawn to this stretch of coast. In my view, design expresses the human need for improving objects on a functional, as well as on an aesthetic level. When we stop defining design only in terms of art, or the purely decorative, and start giving creative people access to additional areas of life, e.g. medicine, transport, food or even social interaction, their contributions are bound to affect positive change. With my Be Open foundation I would like to create a forum which supports young talent and helps develop business ideas, and in which experiments can be turned into reality. cial about this particular field?

You are very interested in traditional crafts, and this year, your foundation curated an exhibition in New Delhi. This will be the first of a series of events. What made you choose India? In the last few years, there has been a renewed interest in handmade products. We wanted to emphasize the importance of making objects by hand, not just in India, but wherever such traditions are still alive. In India, spirituality, mythology and contemporary concepts blend together; the past is happening in the here and now. There, handmade products are not

restricted to souvenirs or traditional objects, but are an essential part of everyday life. Did you have a favorite object in the exhibition? Yes, several actually! But what impressed me the most was speaking to the designers. I asked them to explain their techniques, and to tell me the stories of the people they had worked with to create the objects they were exhibiting. In these conversations, you feel there is a thread connecting the past and the future, and it is one we would like to continue spinning. What long-term impact do you expect the exhibition to have in India?

We hope that the designers and craftspeople who worked on it will continue to collaborate in the future: for example fashion designers working with furniture makers, potters with lighting designers, and wool weavers with sari designers. For the Indian craftspeople it was a new experience to put their creations into a different aesthetic context and to position them in the luxury segment, which, in my opinion, is where they actually belong. Have you already decided which country your next proj-

MICHAELA DE PURY CINDY SHERMAN PEGGY GUGGENHEIM FAYE TOOGOOD

The only way is up …

Michaela de Pury’s new London residence positively vibrates with energy thanks to the dynamic life and work activities taking place here. Women & Art have always been an exciting combination. Peggy Guggenheim became a patron of the arts and a philanthrophic icon of modern art in the 1930s. With her daring portraits, photographer Cindy Sherman has become one of the most successful female artists of our time, and Faye Toogood’s designs and fascinating installations have enhanced the image of companies such as Hermès, Tom Dixon and Montblanc.

innocent country girl and blow-up sex doll: Cindy Sherman has embodied them all. Pop star, battered housewife, grand old lady, daydreaming student and benevolent wet-nurse – the American artist even came back from the dead having posed as a murder victim. Two years ago, the New York Museum of Modern Art celebrated her distinct way of putting herself centre stage in her photos with a wide-ranging retrospective. The show traveled through the USA’s most important museums: San Francisco, Dallas, Minneapolis. Each opening was a festival of dressing up. Guests came in formal wear, decked out with jewelry and outrageously coiffed. They wore kimonos, turbans and tiger masks. She had a reputation as the superwoman of modern art. Peggy Guggenheim was a gallery owner, collector and patron of the arts. With her infinite passion, she shaped 20th century art like no other woman. The American heiress from a mining dynasty made it her life’s work to build up one of the most important collections, and founded a unique museum. “I just fell into the whole thing, like Alice into Wonderland.”

Whether sunbathing by the pool, relaxing at a family barbecue or hosting a piano-accompanied evening with guests: the ‘Castillo Mallorca’ presides over an exceptional grandeur, imbued with a casual air that could only be found in the Mediterranean. It is no coincidence that Princess Diana felt drawn to the comforts of this superb property while holidaying on the island.

H

igh above the harbour in Port d’Andratx on a private peninsula, the sight of this dwelling never fails to impress – not to mention the extraordinary views that await inside the property looking out in every direction. In addition to the main house and beautiful gardens, the land plot also features a pool area set snugly into the grounds, plus a number of terraces and a guesthouse. The road to the property by land leads through impressi-

ve wooden gates, whilst three other access points greet those arriving by sea. Yachts of up to 30 metres can be anchored in the private bay and, if legend is to be believed, hidden treasure was once to be found in the grotto on the western side of the estate. The exclusive comforts of this home easily match the romance of the place: with seven bedrooms and bathrooms, a commodious and inviting living and dining area with an adjoining kitchen, billiard room, fitness suite and sauna.

Art for Everyone

As art market prices continue to skyrocket, buying art at auctions is no longer an option for “regular” art lovers. Some galleries have also become so expensive that many people can no longer afford to collect. Damien Hirst, whose famous shark in formaldehyde and diamond-encrusted skull have made him Britain’s most celebrated artist, has struck out in a new direction entirely by founding the gallery store Other Criteria. It publishes limited editions and serially produces his work as well as that of other artists – for an affordable price.

Anyone for a Hirst? Briton Damien Hirst is one of the most successful artists of his generation. His paintings and sculptures sell for millions of dollars. As the co-founder of the Other Criteria gallery store, he wants to make his works of art, and those of other artists, affordable to everyone – as limited editions or produced in larger numbers. CLOSE UP POLO SCHOOL

Jump in the Saddle! Do you love watching nimble ponies ridden in hot pursuit of the ball? Does the sound of the thundering hoofs on the field give you goose bumps? Then why not jump in the saddle yourself: the Engel & Völkers + Land Rover Polo School gives you the opportunity to get a taste of what TEXT: Annika Urbat is quite possibly the most beautiful sport in the world.

The founders of the Engel & Völkers + Land Rover Polo School (left to right): Christian Völkers, CEO of Engel & Völkers; professional polo player and coach Thomas Winter; and Rackham F. Schröder, managing partner of Engel & Völkers Berlin.

On the two and three-day compact courses, participants learn the basics. The courses are taught by Thomas Winter, one of the most successful German polo players, and by British polo professional Tim Ward. Both hold coaching licenses issued by the UK-based Hurlingham Polo Association, and are among the handful of officially qualified coaches in Germany. Training sessions are conducted in groups with a maximum size of eight, and take place in Hamburg, Berlin, Mallorca or Argentina. Apart from courses for beginners, the Engel & Völkers + Land Rover Polo School also offers advanced courses for those who wish to improve their game and handicap, as well as workshops targeted at children and young people.

to hit the small white ball. Especially when you are sitting on a pony and the polo stick appears to be extremely long. Not to mention the concept of propelling the little orb in the direction of the goal while galloping. On closer inspection, however, you quickly realize that playing polo is all about the right technique rather than reckless daring. Thomas Winter, one of the best polo players in Germany, would definitely agree. The Hamburg native is only one of a small number of coaches in Germany who have been trained in England. For many years now, Winter has been running a polo school at which professional players from around the world, ambitious amateurs, children and young people all come to train. Little wonder then, that Christian Völkers, CEO of Engel & Völkers, and Rackham Schröder, Managing Partner of Engel & Völkers Berlin, opened a polo school in partnership with the successful polo professional. “Founding the school has long been one of my dearest wishes and has its origins in my passion for the sport,” says Christian Völkers, who has been a keen horseman and polo player for many years. On the two and three-day compact courses, those who are curious and have basic riding skills now have the chance to try their hand at playing polo on well-trained school ponies, while receiving expert guidance. In addition to the introductory lessons such as riding skills and polo stick handling techniques, theory lessons also form part of the program, as does a final game. In order to allow sufficient focus on each student, the maximum number of participants per course is restricted to eight. All that is needed for the training is supplied by the school – including polo shirts and caps from the in-house collection. In addition to the Engel & Völkers lettering, these also feature the Land Rover logo. “We are thrilled about the collaboration between Land Rover, Engel & Völkers and the polo school,” says Christian Uhrig, Head of Marketing at Land Rover Germany. “We at Land Rover support the efforts to make polo more popular and look forward to a successful season.” In Germany, the courses take place at the “Preußischer Polo & Country Club Berlin – Brandenburg” in the German capital, or at the grounds of the Hamburg “Polo Gestüt.” Interested parties can also sign up for the course that will place in Majorca this September. For those who are drawn to sunnier climes in the winter months, we suggest a trip to Argentina, where the Engel & Völkers + Land Rover Polo School offers a three-day compact course in November and December. Following the course, it is worth visiting the capital Buenos Aires, where the world’s biggest polo tournament – the Argentine Polo Open – takes place every December. Watching the world’s best polo players compete while you sip on a cup of yerba mate, you can find inspiration and totally immerse yourself in this fascinating sport. AU t first glance, it seems almost impossible

Polo is a team sport. A compact course is, therefore, the ideal introduction to the sport. In the two and three-day workshops participants learn the theoretical and practical basics of the game as a group. Apart from the classes, communal meals are also part of the program. During these you can already discuss strategies for the final game with your teammates. The price of the compact courses depends on the length and location of the course, as well as on the number of ponies hired. Participants on advanced courses may bring their

York’s Metropolitan Museum has hosted what is arguably the most important fashion exhibition of the year. And the Costume Institute Gala, to which host Anna Wintour invites the most important personalities from the worlds of fashion and entertainment, also forms part of this. The exhibition always provides a benchmark of what is in right now, as well as of what is on the horizon. This year, the museum puts the spotlight on Charles James, “America’s first couturier.” Bill Cunningham once dubbed him the “Einstein of fashion,” because of his strictly technical and mathematically conceived designs. Cristóbal Balenciaga called him “the world’s best couturier,” while others awarded him the title of “the sculptor of fashion,” because of his extraordinary silhouettes and drapery. With his elegant creations, which shaped American glamour well into the 1950s, the museum picks up on current sophisticated, “feminine” trends.

Pussy Riot Unmasked Bert Verwelius, teNeues, approx. € 40

In February 2012, Pussy Riot made worldwide headlines. The anti-Putin band had offended the Kremlin with its “punk prayer” and was sent off to prison. In late 2013, key band members Nadezda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina were released, but did they keep quiet about their experience? No way! They went to the Netherlands to see photographer Bert Verwelius. The result is a book of reenacted scenes of life and working conditions in the labor camp.

Ai Weiwei

Cristina Carrillo de Albornoz Fisac, Assouline, approx. € 19

Provocative and recognizable – Ai Weiwei finds himself in the spotlight wherever he is. There seems to be no end to what he’s capable of, as evidenced by the traveling exhibition “According to What” which opened in April in the Brooklyn Museum. It was accompanied by this book, which reflects on the role of the artist in our society, beset with conflicting feelings about his homeland. Photographer, sculptor, architect, activist – Ai Weiwei is all of them.

The Ride

Chris Hunter, Robert Klanten, Gestalten, € 50

We’ll get right to the point: this book is about motorcycles. But not just ordinary bikes. It’s also about the people who customize their rides and turn them into something special. In recent years, a scene has sprung up in which people express their personality and unlimited creativity by customizing their bike. So what’s holding you back? Stop reading, go riding!

IP Gérard Goodrow, daab, € 125 OK T

Seven cities, innumerable artists and venues: this 400-page volume explores China’s young, creative scene. Painting, photography, architecture and performance art abound, and are creating new superstars. Compiled by curator and author Gérard Goodrow, this comprehensive tome features articles by knowledgeable contribu-tors and is sure to thrill art lovers, gallerists and connoisseurs.

An American Odyssey Marc Walter, Sabine Arqué, Taschen, € 150

America: the word itself evokes longing. This nostalgic volume portrays what was once an untouched and unexplored continent in photochrome prints and Phostint color postcards from the private collection of Marc Walter, all produced between 1888 and 1924 by the Detroit Photographic Company. There are pictures of gold diggers, cowboys, Native Americans and vast landscapes – 612 pages of America the Beautiful from long ago.

Le Cabinet de Curiosités Thierry W Despont, Assouline, approx. € 110

Curator and artist Thierry W Despont’s installation from 2011 is absolutely unique. It merges contemporary art with 18th and 19th century antiques, and what exactly originated when doesn’t matter at all! This 120-page volume brings to life a veritable cabinet of curiosities including works by Despont, Manolo Valdés, Claudio Bravo and rare furniture from the Steinitz collection. Floating Shell

S

miljan Radic had not previously designed a building in the UK, so he fulfilled the principal prerequisite set by those in charge of commissioning architects to construct the Serpentine Gallery’s summer pavilion in Kensington Gardens. Radic runs his own architecture firm in Santiago de Chile, together with sculptor Marcela Correra. In his work, he always combines art and architecture, and has so far mainly implemented projects in his home country, such as the Museo Chileno de Arte Precolombino and Mestizo Restaurant, both in Santiago. He was a participant in the 12th Architecture Biennale in Venice and has also designed bus stops that have been erected in Austria. Smiljan Radic has now become the 14th architect commissioned to design a temporary structure next to the Serpentine Gallery’s head office in London. For this, he designed a shell made of fiberglass perched, upside-down, on quarry stones. Is this an homage to Stonehenge? “The shell – white and translucent – encloses an empty patio, from where the natural setting will appear lower, creating the impression that the whole volume is floating,” says the architect. Radic considers his pavilion to be in the tradition of the small, decorative structures called follies which were extremely popular in English parks from the 16th to the 19th century. The use of translucent materials is typical of Radic’s artistic approach. These not only bathe the interior of the structure in soft light, but also illuminate the area around it. “When the light radiUA ates out through the semi-transparent walls at night, it is meant to draw in passers-by, like a lamp attracts moths.”
