Cold Weather Reminder

We want to take this opportunity to remind you about student arrival time in the morning. No supervision is available prior to 8:00 a.m. - either inside or outside the building. Students who arrive prior to 8:00 a.m. cannot enter the building even on bad weather days. We simply do not have the staff available prior to 8:00 to provide supervision.

2009 INAUGURATION

Students were a witness to history in the making -- read more on page 3 ...

If the weather is bad, the students are brought into the gm at 8:00 a.m. They remain there until 8:15 a.m. when their teachers escort them to class. The only exception to this is for those students who participate in our breakfast program. They are allowed into the gym at 7:45 a.m. They have about ten minutes to finish their

breakfast. When they are done, they are either sent outside if the other students are staying out or they remain in the gym if the other students are being brought in. Also, in order to simplify the entry process on those days when the students are inside in the morning, we have limited the number of entrances to two. The first is the front entrance on Beloit. The second is the middle entrance on Ferdinand side. In this way we will be able to direct the students into the gym from fewer entrances into the building. Thank you for your cooperation. -Mr. Giovannoni

SCOTY Award Winner for 2008-2009

Each year West 40, the educational service center for the western suburbs, sponsors a ceremony to honor outstanding students in each school district. Individual districts can choose the criteria that they use to select the award winner, who is chosen by District 91 in January. This good citizen and model fifth-grade student qualifies for the SCOTY Award, an acronym for School Citizen of the Year.

Field-Stevenson’s nominee this year is Maya Buenrostro. A student at Field since first grade, she has grown each year, showing herself to be a dedicated student, taking great pride in her work and concerned about her academic performance. Not only is Maya a good student, she’s also wellrounded: she is part of the Challenge Program and the Latin Program. She also is in band. All these school-related activities

take her out of the classroom each week, but Maya is so conscientious that she never misses an assignment. Maya’s peers look up to her as a role model because she is helpful and caring. Her unique personality makes her well-liked by her fifth-grade

classmates and students in other grades as well. The SCOTY Awards will be given out on Wednesday, March 18, 2009 at Mannheim School. We all congratulate Maya on a well-deserved award!

Mix-it-Up at Lunch Day Field-Stevenson School, along with over 4 million schools from across the country, participated in the Mix-it-Up at Lunch Day. This Teaching Tolerance program encourages students to question and cross boundaries by sitting with someone new

The program helps kids meet new people, makes students more comfortable interacting with different people, raises awareness about social boundaries and helps students make new friends. Field-Stevenson Celebrates President Obama’s Inauguration By: Cheryl Bussert

On Tuesday, January 20, Field Stevenson students didn’t just learn about history, they participated in the making, as they gathered in the gym to not only watch the inauguration ceremonies but be filmed and interviewed by WGN TV (channel 9). The cameras were rolling all day as a crew joined the school early in the morning, and stayed through lunch. Students began gathering in the gym around 9:30, bringing with them patriotic art projects to decorate the walls. Mr. G. provided students with instructive background information as the pre-ceremony coverage aired. After the swearing in, Ms. Dooley and the 4th graders led the school in singing “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Channel 9 had cameras not only at Field Stevenson, but also downtown, and at a restaurant in Hyde Park, and every so often, they would cut to what was happening in those locations. At about 12:45, while students were finishing up their box lunches in the gym, several student interviews were aired. The afternoon was capped off by patriotic ice cream treats, and not unlike the National Mall, tired but happy students finally filed out to go home. Thanks to Dr. Cavallo for contacting the Tribune and steering them our way. To see more, follow this link: http:// triblocal.com/Forest_Park

And now, as President Obama has urged us, time to pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and get to work! READ! STUDY! HELP OTHERS!

A positive outlet... Exercises for ISAT prep: Foot stomping, visualization, and relaxation activities are some of the things that helped Ms. Edwards’ 5th grade ISAT tutoring group. They transformed their negative feelings into positive energy that resulted in students meeting and exceeding standards on portions of Study Island.
