“Fall” The season with multiple names. Most here in the US call this season “Fall or Autumn”. Before these names the season was referred to as “Harvest”. The concept of autumn in European languages is connected with the harvesting of crops; in many cultures autumn, like the other seasons, has been marked by rites and festivals revolving around the season’s importance in food production. Some refer to Fall as a spiritual season for balancing light and dark, letting go, and accepting the impermanence of things. I refer to Fall as my favorite season. A time to enjoy the weather and the amazing colors it has to offer. To experience the essence of nature. So however you refer to this season of change, I hope you enjoy its beauty as much as I. -

No. 3 Grip – American Buffalo $988.50 The No. 3 Grip is certainly in tune with the Col. Littleton Americana style. The bag crafted in American Buffalo looks as if it could be tossed right up on a stagecoach or passenger train, but it works equally well for modern-day travelers. Most of the time I don’t like or need a huge, rolling suitcase, and many of the small carry bags are just that-too small. This travel bag is unique, unusual and certain to be a conversation piece everywhere you go. Handmade in our workshop, it really qualifies as Americana art; yet, it is very functional and serviceable. The beauty is in the details. Solid copper tubes and solid brass fixtures set it apart from any piece of luggage you’ll ever see. The No. 3 may be carried by either the leather handle or the adjustable shoulder strap. Straps on the back secure your umbrella (umbrella not included). The front brass pommel shield is serial numbered, noting the exclusivity of the piece. May be personalized on brass oval plate. 11”H x 21”W x 9”D Shoulder Strap Length: 39.5”-47.5” Bag Weight: 6.2lbs. (U.S. Patent D651400)

uality craftsmanship, fair pricing and security comprise the end-goal of the Pfeffer family who own and operate Diversified Enclosures and Screen in Sevierville. The company which opened in 2000 specializes in screen rooms and sunrooms utilizing their Eze-Breeze window system. Many of the amenities they offer include glass sliders, powder coated aluminum handrails and screen doors, motorized screens and awnings and flat roof systems. But, now they’re really excited about offering Crimsafe, a security window system and also Eversafe, a security film by HanitaTek.

Paired with Crimsafe customers have the latest security technology for their homes.

Crimsafe was developed in Australia over 20 years ago as a hurricane screen. Its applications have been expanded to include security, fire attenuation, and energy savings. From insects to acts of God, the Crimsafe Screening System keeps homes safe, secure, and energy efficient. It’s installed with tamper-resistant screws exclusive to Crimsafe. rimsafe Security and Storm Screens are now available in East Tennessee through Diversified Enclosures and Screen. Diversified has over 20 years in the enclosures market and with the addition of Crimsafe,

becomes the only company in East Tennessee with the strongest and safest security product on the market. Crimsafe began two decades ago in Australia as a hurricane screen and came to the United States five years ago. Diversified markets Crimsafe as a security and storm screen. Since Crimsafe Security and Storm Screens are designed to prevent up to 200 mph winds and debris from entering through glass windows and doors, imagine what it can do to keep out criminals, animals, and storm damage. From the inside of your home or business, Crimsafe protects children, pets, and adults too! Crimsafe is a beautiful product that matches the colors of your home or business. Each security door, security window, security patio, security porch, security lanai, and security pool covering is custom built specifically for your home or business. Diversified comes to your home or business, measures your windows, doors, porches, and any other opening you want protected, and produces a plan that will protect your family and assets. Crimsafe Security Screens are designed to keep criminals out of your home and business. If a criminal cannot get to the glass or the hardware of a door or window, the break-in will never occur. Other security systems cannot make this claim. We harden entrances, which makes illegal entry almost impossible. Crimsafe looks like an ordinary screen until someone or something attacks the screens, then Crimsafe becomes physical security, which prevents terrible things from occurring. Call Diversified Enclosures and Screen today for a free security analysis of your home and business and how your property can be hardened against criminals, animals, and storms. Crimsafe is a sure thing in an unsure world.

Why You Should Have Your Tile and Grout Professionally Cleaned with Eco Clean

T

ile flooring is a popular choice for entryways, kitchens, laundry rooms and bathrooms due to its strength, durability and visual appeal. The only downside to tile flooring is the difficultly to keep it clean. Tile grout is a porous material, and whenever you spill or mop your floors, it is absorbing stains and dirt. The result? A dingy looking tile floor with dark-colored grout. Of course, it is possible to get down on your hands and knees and scrub the grout clean with a toothbrush and chemicals, but that can be a long, tedious, and uncomfortable job. And even after tons of scrubbing, dirt embedded deep within the grout lines will remain, more dirt will accumulate over time, and you’ll be back on your hands and knees after a few months. You can save time (and your back) by hiring a professional, such as Eco Clean, to clean your tile and grout. Using a combination of heat, water and extraction, your floors will be clean and looking like new in less than a few hours. A professional tile and grout cleaner can restore your tile floors back to their original appearance with absolutely no effort on your end.

How are Tile and Grout Cleaned Professionally? Eco Clean tile and grout cleaning utilizes steam and water pressure to release dirt and grime and suction to remove the dirty water from the surface of the floor. This is the most effective and efficient way to have your tile and grout professionally cleaned. Special attention is given to any stains, the areas around appliances, in corners, and near baseboards. You may also opt to have your grout sealed after it is cleaned to prevent staining and to keep dirt from accumulating in the grout after a professional tile cleaning. Depending on how old and dirty the grout is, however, it may be permanently stained. There is also the option to add a custom color seal to the grout to cover set stains in these instances. How Long Does A Professional Tile and Grout Cleaning Take? Depending on the area to be cleaned, tile and grout cleaning will generally take 30-90 minutes. The actual amount of time required to clean the tile and grout

www.knoxclean.com

865-691-5556

can vary based on the amount of soil in the grout lines, the configuration of the room, the size of tile, and number of grout lines. If you opt to have your grout sealed, the process will take longer, typically two to three hours. Sealing your grout will prevent dirt buildup and can reduce the frequency of professional cleanings. If you have your floors sealed, you should avoid using the floor immediately afterwards and do not clean it for at least 24 hours. Avoid using harsh floor cleaners to protect the grout seal. Is Professional Tile and Grout Cleaning Safe for my Floors? Before beginning, an Eco Clean technician will test your floors to ensure the safest and most effect cleaning method for your floors. The cleaning process involves the use of hot water and high pressure, which is safe for use on most tiled floors. If you have questions about cleaning the tile and grout in your home call Eco Clean today!

health|fitness Boost Your Immune System with Acupuncture

by Maureen Cromey An Acupuncturist and Chinese Medicine Expert Maureen Cromey I’m always being asked at my clinic if Acupuncture can boost the Immune System. The answer is yes... it is amazing at doing this. Acupuncture is thousands of years old and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has understood immunity for a long time. As early as the 11th Century the Chinese were using 'nasal vaccinations' to prevent the spread of smallpox. The secretions from a smallpox lesion were diluted and a very small amount inserted into the nose and inhaled by the healthy person. This triggered a natural reaction of the immune system to produce antigens and prevented the smallpox epidemic in China that devastated Europe. In TCM theory the first line of defence is the wei qi. This is qi energy that circulates just beneath our skin and regulates sweating and immunity. It is dependent on lung function and controls the opening of pores on the skin. It keeps pores closed preventing disease factors getting into our bodies. Long before viruses and bacteria were recognised as pathogens which cause disease, TCM doctors referred to pathogenic factors. These they interpreted as environmental, wind, cold, heat and damp. This theory was based on careful observation and to this day we naturally understand it; if we sweat in a cold wind our pores are open and it is easy to catch a chill or cold. A cold wind on our back or neck can cause a stiff neck or shoulder and excess heat or sun can cause heat stroke. A healthy balanced body has a strong and effective immune system. All the things that leave us feeling run down, tired lethargic or depressed will lower immunity and compromise how our bodies response to pathogens. To boost our immune system we need to improve wei qi. • A cool shower once a day boosts wei qi. • Exercise outside, whatever the weather, is beneficial. • Eat good quality food in appropriate amounts. • Sleep well and regularly.

• Manage stress and working hours where possible. • Avoid antibiotics, antihistamines and sinus medication. • If you are ill then rest, take extra nutrients and herbs, have a few acupuncture sessions and support your body giving it time (which is very important) to naturally overcome an infection. • Trust your body to be strong. • Regular monthly acupuncture sessions support and strengthen immunity Scientific research shows that acupuncture increases the white blood cells in the body and moderates the immune system allowing it to react swiftly and strongly to threats. It may be that your immune system is already very low. This can be caused by long term stress, recurring infections or excessive use of antibiotics, chemotherapy, surgical operations and bereavements also lower our resistance to disease. In these cases the steps listed above will not be quite enough. You will also need to increase acupuncture to weekly sessions for a month or so and maybe take herbs. Chinese herbal medicine has many herbs which enhance immunity. Huang qi for example greatly increases white blood cells and natural killer cells. A combination of the steps above, regular acupuncture treatments, prescribed herbs and rest make a massive difference and will restore an ailing system quickly and effectively.

Fitness in 30 Minutes or Less

hy I love this Business Service Center I never intended to get into the “fitness” business. In fact, if you asked me just a few years ago, I would have laughed at the thought. I was a nurse working with cancer patients. But, here I am, the proud owner of a Koko FitClub here in Knoxville, and my life has never been better because I own a business that is making a difference in other people’s lives. I like to think I am helping them stay away from the chemo unit! Fitness is a hard concept for many people to grasp; yet it might be the single biggest factor that determiones how long you’ll live and the quality of that life. Fitness can help your body fight off almost every disease of aging that, over time, can destroy your mind, body and the ability to be YOU. Fitness can change the quality of your life. I opened Koko FitClub so that I could share this concept with people who have failed at traditional gyms in the past,

or who are simply too intimidated to take the first step towards giving fitness a try. The fear of change lives within us all. For many people, it is easier to just keep doing what we are doing, rather than admit what we are doing is killing us one day at a time. The sad thing about fitness is that it is a lot like money for many people: you really don’t appreciate it until you need it, and then it is often too late to make it happen. As old-fashioned as it sounds, I became a Koko FitClub owner because I want to make a difference in the world. There is nothing more important in today’s society--where 64% of the people in our country are either overweight or obese---than helping people find a healthier lifestyle. Change and improve someone’s health and fitness level and you change their life. A person can add years to his or her life and those years will be richer, more active and more meaningful. What we do at Koko FitClub can truly make a difference to you

and how you live. If you are one of those people who fears change, or who has failed in fitness and dieting in the past, come see what a difference a Koko FitClub can make in your life. I feel so strongly about what we do here that we will let you try our club for 30 days for only $30.00! Come see what we do, meet our staff and try our industry changing technology. Meet the other members and give us a chance to show you that fitness CAN be a part of your life that you actually enjoy. If at the end of 30 days we haven’t earned your business, then we don’t deserve to have you as a client. Yours in good health, Tricia Kilgore Koko FitClub Bearden and Farragut Bearden.kokofitclub.com or Farragut. kokofitclub.com

Alzheimer’s Tennessee Our Mission:

To serve those facing Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, to promote brain health through education, and to champion global prevention and treatment efforts. What We Do Alzheimer’s Tennessee, Inc. provides family support, offers community and professional education, advocates for the needs and rights of those with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, as well as research for its prevention, cure, and treatment. Families receive assistance through such programs as the agency’s locally-staffed Helpline, consultations on care for persons with the disease, adult day care in Knox County, more than 42 support groups, help with local resources and referrals, financial assistance, in-service training opportunities for staff at area facilities, advocacy aimed at enhancements in law and policy, an annual research symposium for physicians and healthcare professionals, and educational materials and programs such as caregiver training workshops for families and professionals featuring local specialists and nationally-renowned experts.

“We want to guarantee those dollars – made possible by generous area individuals, families, foundations, companies, and countless volunteers committed to grassroots fundraising – will directly benefit local families as well as the most promising research. This community’s outstanding support along with the backing of our local media are making a huge difference in our programs.”

History In 1983, a small group of East Tennessee families began to meet informally in an effort to understand and cope with the ravaging effects of Alzheimer’s disease. Together, the group was able to anticipate, confront, and solve seemingly insurmountable problems with a renewed sense of hope, confidence and accomplishment. Alzheimer’s Tennessee, Inc. began providing services in East Tennessee as a non-profit organization in 1983. Two years later, the group affiliated with the Chicago-based National Alzheimer’s Association and became known as the Alzheimer’s Association, Eastern Tennessee Chapter, Inc. However, it always remained incorporated in the state of Tennessee and governed by a local Board of Directors. The Eastern Tennessee Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association returned to its original independent status under the new name Alzheimer’s Tennessee, Inc. in August 2011 to ensure that more resources support top research and local services for individuals and families struggling with the devastating disease. “The Board had become increasingly concerned that funds raised in East Tennessee and the Cumberlands were going out of the area and limiting our ability to fund the vital programs we offer locally,” said Mary Lyn Goodman, Board President. “The fund-raising format the Chicago-based national organization recently put into place redistributes significant money raised through this great state’s volunteer spirit.

Hiking, Biking, & More

Hiking... the Optimal Fat Burning Cardio? O

ne of the best things about living in East Tennessee is the mountains all around us. And now that October is here it has gotten even better with the change in colors. We are blessed to live in one of the most botanically diverse regions in North America. The rich variation in foliage creates a beautiful quilted affect across our mountain ranges. And so if you have been looking for an excuse to jump start your health and enjoy our natural beauty no time is like the present. “Free time” is hard to come by nowadays but with all the increased pressures of life, it’s even more important to take a break from the grind every now and then and go climb a mountain or just meander through the woods. And the great thing about hiking is that it is an ideal exercise for cardiovascular conditioning and fat loss. Our friend, Andrew Henderson, the owner of the local fitness studio Fitness Together has shared some valuable facts with us regarding the positive health benefits that hiking our mountain trails can yield. Hiking is really the perfect form of “interval” training; walk up a hill and your heart rate soars, walk on flat or downhill grades, and your heart rate drops. This type of exercise has been shown to be more effective than steady state cardio in multiple research studies. The average heart rate of hiking tends to be a bit less than running, but more than just walking on flat ground or on a treadmill. Hiking a moderately difficult trail can burn up to 550 Kcal/hr. for a 200 lb. person! Because it has less impact than running, it is great for those with orthopedic concerns. One of Farragut Clients, Rick, was able to hike Mt. LeConte just months after a full knee replacement! Other added benefits of hiking include the use of different muscles (believe me you WILL feel you glutes and calves the next day if you haven’t hike in a while!). Hiking on uneven terrain can help us maintain and even improve our balance. And possibly the biggest benefit of hiking, at least for me, is that a day spent in the fresh air and sunshine with some friends just makes me feel great mentally and emotionally. Now as noted, time is precious to us all and so if you don’t have it in your schedule to hit the Smokies three times a week there is still hope for you. There are wonderful local resources that you can take advantage of in order to work hiking in to your personal fitness scheme. The Outdoor Knoxville website (outdoorknoxville.com) is a great resource for a list of local assets you can visit in order to get outdoors without the long drive. To name a few, Ijam’s Nature Center, Forks of the River, Haw Ridge, and Sharps Ridge are all locations in and around Knox County that allow you to get the hiking experience close into town. Then you will be ready to hit the trail one upcoming weekend and enjoy our regional beauty this Fall. We recommend you head up to The Lodge at Buckberry Creek (Buckberrylodge.com) for a romantic Fall getaway and enjoy some amazing trails in the Smokies. Matt Sullivan “Sully” has been in the orange grove business half of his life, as has his father, and his grandfather. Matt has a degree in Citrus, he knows juice. He left that business, to bring fresh-squeezed non-pasteurized orange juice to East Tennessee. Our juice is as pure as Nature intended. We think you will agree that there is no comparison. october 2015 hushh magazine 27

Knoxville/UT $9-$39 “College Towns & States” We all feel nostalgic for those places of our past that we hold close to our hearts. Hence, Jann Peitso paints her “States and College Towns” series with an eye toward the special college traditions and “hang outs” of that time and those things that “we didn’t want our mamas to know about” in those often magical years. The States of our birth, or those of our choosing, show her knack for focusing on the detail in ferreting out the little known facts surrounding the towns and tourist attractions, each with their perhaps, amusing sights and memorable eateries..
