onstruction is set to commence on one of South East Queensland’s preeminent new apartment developments with $2.5 million in civil works now underway on Rhodes Capalaba. With 271-apartments spread across six architecturally designed buildings, Rhodes will usher in a new era of contemporary living in the growth area. Rhodes sales and marketing manager, Gavin Loyden, says the pace of the project is picking up with the start of civil works marking another milestone in the project’s development. “Rhodes has set out to establish the benchmark for a new type of living in Capalaba, and the commencement of these works takes us one step closer to making this a reality.” Located adjacent to the Capalaba shopping and commercial CBD, Rhodes has been masterplanned with new urbanist principles in order to create a connected community where residents can enjoy a high quality lifestyle. Rhodes has been built to take full advantage of the two nearby shopping centres in Capalaba, with all the major retail outlets, a Bunnings, Aldi and sports fields all closely located. “Rhodes incorporates landscaped gardens, barbeques, pools, spas and dedicated green areas that have been built into the development as an intrinsic part of the planning. “There are also several public and private schools in the local area, and the development is going to be built at a well serviced public transport junction.” The design principles incorporated at Rhodes are a concept supported by town planners and government, as residents of these innovative communities are able to reach more of the things they need by foot.

“Essentially, New Urbanism takes many of the problems associated with urban sprawl – the pollution, the noise, the excessive travel – and puts up practical, convenient solutions to combat them. Gavin says that while Transit Oriented Development is a large part of New Urbanism, there are other qualities the concept possesses that make it a viable option for future urban planning. “Rhodes is giving homebuyers the ability to live somewhere different – it’s a new style of living that’s based on classic concepts, and I think that’s something that holds a lot of value for much of the market.” Apartments in the development will come in both two and three bedroom designs and range in size between 93m2 and 180m2. All have large balcony areas, European branded appliances and air-conditioning, and have underground parking with elevator access. Stage One of the project comprises 98 apartments across two buildings, Cunningham and Fraser is currently for sale with the release of the next stage to be announced soon. WANTED to be a mum ever since I was little. Well, that and an actress. And a journalist. And I think there were princess aspirations urging long before tweenhood too (perhaps those ones still exist, just between you and me). But being a mum was always a high priority on my list of stuff I wanted to do before I was 30. And it’s true what they say you know, you never understand until you have a child of your own. Of all the things I’ve achieved in my life – some great, and yes, some not so great – motherhood is one of my proudest. Even though I sometimes battle with myself over if I’m actually doing a good job or not (just like every other mum who is reading this right now and nodding her head) I still know in my heart of hearts, when my little boy looks up at me with a sparkling glint in his eye and tells me he ‘loves me the mostest in the whole world, mummy’ that there is no sweeter sound. And there never will be. Mums protect, nurture and shower their children with an unconditional love from the moment they’re born – until long into their adult life…and most of us don’t give ourselves a pat on the back for doing one of the world’s most thankless jobs. How would I describe motherhood? Well, it’s funny you ask (I know you didn’t actually ask me, but I’m presuming you would) one of the most challenging careers you’ll ever undertake (yes, even harder than your first love in your teens). There is no role greater than motherhood. There is also none that is both rewarding and grossly underestimated at the same time. You will never say the words “she’s just a stay at home mum” in the same sentence again. Ever. You will spend the rest of your life – from the moment your baby comes into the world – trying to protect it from harm, make it perfect and most of all love it more than you’ve ever loved anything. And one day…that little person will look into your eyes and you’ll feel like your heart is about to break into a million tiny pieces, you’ve never felt so overwhelmed. That tiny soul will make you laugh at every tiny thing and sometimes make you cry with pride, but the most important thing is… YOU always know best, for you are Mum. Yes, there’s the four am feeds, the times when you’re not sure you’re doing the right thing, the moments when you just think your baby is THE most amazing Einstein-like child to ever walk the earth (no really, we all do). These are the Moments of Motherhood. This month in our special All Things Mum issue, we celebrate some truly amazing (and local) women who share their special journeys along motherhood’s never-ending and often challenging road in our feature, Postcards from Motherhood (p19). And we talk to a local mum whose own tragic loss is heartbreaking in our real-life feature, Wish you Were Here (p28). We celebrate women, we celebrate those who have helped shape us all into what we are today. We celebrate mums. a bookish lass who wants in with the cool crowd and with oh-so-pretty Keira by her side, attempts to reel in the boy of her dreams – an American hunk (of course) with cheekbones to rival Helena Bonham Carter. I won’t give away the whole story just in case you happen upon this little 2001 pearler in your TV travels. Teens are full of angst, nerves, hormones and paranoia at the best of times and it’s often hard to decipher right from wrong. When I was a teen (not that long ago that we need to disclose actual figures) and there weren’t too many fellas I was willing to hanker down with in an underground bunker but I do relate to Liz’s utter fascination with someone she believes she is in love with. I met this bloke once, when I was about 18. He worked in the café across from the office where I used to work. He’d moved over from Ireland and there was just something about him that me go nutty every time he asked me what kind of coffee I wanted (and didn’t seem to flinch that I was going in his café to order my coffee on average around 12 times a day). For months, we indulged Go to getitmagazine. com.au in intimate chats about Ireland and the travelling he planned to do when he made enough money. When he finally did ask me out I could hardly get the words out to say yes. This brogue lad took up my every waking milisecond with his Irish blue eyes
WATCHED this movie recently, called The Hole. Not the most award-winning piece of theatre I’ve ever seen, and certainly not in the steed of The Kings Speech (hellooooo Colin Firth, you can park your slippers under my bed anytime you great hunka plum-talking spunk), but it was a good watch, nonetheless. The cast was not entirely well known, there was a longhaired (and sickly skinny) Keira Knightly, Thora Birch (that crazy kooky chick from American Beauty) and as I said, a few relative unknowns. The plotline was also not one of the most genius pieces of literature ever penned (don’t worry Elizabeth Gilbert, you’re safe) but somehow, it kept me watching. The story goes like this: Four wealthy teens are bored with their lives at a well-to-do English country boarding school and decide they want a weekend away to step up their mundane lives. Enter a geeky teen who holds the key to a secret underground crypt dubbed ‘The Hole’. Initially used as an underground bomb shelter, covered by a leafy exterior that so easily guises its nondescript opening, allowing for complete isolation and the extreme unlikelihood of discovery. Thora Birch plays Liz,

(I’m not sure that’s an actual colour but he was Irish, and they were indeed the bluest of blue) and his magnetic charm. I couldn’t see that he was simply in it for fun. He wanted a harmless holiday flirt or booty call if you really must. I wanted a long-lasting love affair like in the movies. I really thought he must have been head over heels in love with me...damn teen hormones! Oh Mary mother of Jesus, how I was wrong. That boy took my heart, bit the side off it and let all the blood trickle out, drop by drop. We had a romance alright, but it lasted (as passionate as it was) for all of about two weeks before he left the café, and the city, and the country without so much as a You’re Too Good For Me letter in his wake... Broke my heart he did. I spent months pining for the boy and thought my whole world was over. That was until I met my next crush and then I was right back at square one. I sure don’t miss being a teen...do you?

aren Phillips has always had a way with words. At age 7, she wrote a poem:
‘I want to be a writer, I’ll write about the sea, I’ll write about people, And they’ll write about me.’ With no surprises, she excelled through her schooling years and at just 14, Karen was one of the youngest delegates invited by the Federal Government to attend the nation’s first National Youth Conference. Then a year later, Karen was honoured with an Australian Young Citizen of the Year Award for outstanding services to youth at local, state and national level and has since lived by the belief that one idea can change the world through creating heart-to-heart connections. Starting out as a cadet journalist, Karen built an expansive career in media and launched her own public relations empire, Karen Phillips Corporate Communications at 27, soon becoming one of Australia’s most sought after strategists in the areas of brand management and corporate communications. Now, with over 20 years experience under her belt, Karen travels the globe

as a professional trainer and presenter, working with some of the world’s most prestigious brands and identities and speaking to tens of thousands of women from all walks of life. On a trip to Bali last June, she and her husband Tony were on their way out to dinner when Karen fell down a ravine and broke her back. “It’s a really interesting story because I’m sort of like, ‘yeah, whatever’, but everyone else has said it’s just one of those ‘how on earth do you do that?’ stories,” Karen says. “It was a dimly lit path and we’d only just moved into the villa where we were staying, and we couldn’t really see where we were going. I thought the pathway was straight… and then I walked straight off the edge. There was no falling and grabbing, I literally just walked into fresh air.” Suffering facial and internal injuries, Karen’s doctors say she was lucky to survive. After this life-changing experience Karen decided it was time to follow her heartfelt dream. Less than a year later, her dream to connect and inspire women around the country in a way never done before, is now coming to fruition with The Women’s Words Project and includes the launch of her first book Women’s Words of Wisdom, Power & Passion. “Life is too short not to do what you want to do. I thought, ‘if I died then, what would I have not said?’ So I came back I said: ‘right, this is it!’,” Karen says. Women’s Words of Wisdom, Power & Passion is an ultimate collection of women coming together to share everything they know about success, love, health and happiness. “No one understands women better than women. So who better to give advice than 50 of Australia’s finest?” she adds. She’s already being sought after by some of the nation’s top netball coaches. Young star player Chanel Gomez has the Commonwealth Games set firmly in her sights.
ome choose a six-inch stiletto to complete their daily attire. Others prefer slipping into a pair of well-worn Havianas at the first chance they get. But for 19-year-old Chanel Gomes, donning a pair of netball shoes is a daily task. Lucky for her, no Tony Bianco encouragement is required in the height department, with this gorgeous sixfoot-two beauty standing a good head above the average girl. With a broad but sweet smile and a set of tightly-toned legs that stretch for miles, it comes as no surprise that the Gold Coast local has taken her passion and talent for netball to competing at both a national and international professional level. At eight, Chanel played her first game of netball for West Ryde in Sydney where her talent was clear from the first whistle. After moving with her family to the Gold Coast, Chanel joined the Helensvale ‘Hippi Chicks’ where former coach Margaret Tobin believes Chanel’s potential was evident from day one. “I met Chanel when she was nine years old. I could see that she had so much potential in any sport she took on. I asked her to join Helensvale Netball Club and I had to convince her mum, Leanne, to join. From the moment I saw her play I said, and always say, she will play for Australia one day.” In 2004, Chanel traded her royal blue pleated skirt for a jade lycra number after being selected to play representative netball for the Gold Coast Hinterland. It wasn’t long before she was offered a position on the Brisbane South Wildcats squad where she remained for two years. Then Queensland selectors signed her up in 2008, insisting she represent the state at National competitions. The young star impressed them so much, officials sent an invitation for Chanel to attend a selection camp at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra. She was successful in her trials, and received a scholarship to the AIS in 2009. www.getitmagazine.com.au

Complete with her nine pairs of netball shoes, Chanel and friend Stephanie Wood (also an AIS scholarship recipient) piled into her car bound for Canberra. “It was really sad waving goodbye to my family and friends, especially my mum who’s been my best friend through everything. Luckily I couldn’t look back in the rear-vision mirror to see them crying because my car was so full of suitcases, or my already watery eyes may have became a tsunami!” Chanel was selected to represent Australia in the 17, 19, and 21 age groups, and was named the AIS Most Valuable Player (Gweneth Benzie Award) in 2010. This prestigious award recognises the athlete who has the most potential to become an Australian Netball Diamond. “I didn’t expect it at all! It is a huge honour.” It seems the selectors were correct in their nomination, with Chanel claiming the Goal Defence bib for the Australian Fastnet Diamonds which is made up of the country’s most promising athletes under 25. The opportunities for this bundle of talent are not in short supply. Western Australia’s Fever approached Chanel recently, offering a position on their squad as a temporary replacement player in the ANZ competition. “I jumped at the opportunity. It was a difficult decision to make, but seeing the positives in what I could get out of the competition were definitely in my favour. Things like experiencing the top level of netball, playing for a different state, different players and a different coach are all amazing opportunities for my netball career.” Jet-setting between Singapore, New Zealand and every country in between, Chanel is no stranger to the tarmac as she packs her netball uniform and boots and sets off around the globe. “I’ve been lucky enough to still live at the AIS and travel for the Fever games the day before. Sometimes when I fly to play with the Fever, I have to jump on another plane

straight after the game and fly to catch up to where my AIS girls are. So many planes to catch in the next two months!” Chanel says as she jokes about her sudden accumulation of frequent flyer points. Between games and training, Chanel’s being wooed by some of the nation’s top state coaches, in an attempt to sign her with their squad. But so far, the young player’s decision as to which team she decides to sign with after leaving the AIS, remains uncertain. And life’s not all laced asics and velcro bibs for this star sportswoman who has a Certificate in Personal Training, a Certificate in Massage and is currently undertaking a course in Nutrition and Diet. “I usually train twice a day and have TAFE in between sessions. It’s hard work, but it’s worth it. If I wasn’t to play netball I would be putting my certificates into action which is what I will do when I move back home and hopefully start my own business.” Chanel’s sights are set on representing the Australian Diamonds in the major competitions and the Commonwealth Games and her former coach has no doubt she’ll fulfil her dreams. “Chanel played her junior netball with a great bunch of girls and they have remained life friends. To feel wanted and part of a team is what leads you in the right direction. Chanel has a heart of gold and will get back what she gives. Describing the show as “furiously funny and fearlessly frank,” producers say there’s no better location than the Glitter Strip to film SLiDE. For the past month, the cast and crew have been filming on the Coast and in various locations around Brisbane’s CBD. For Brisbane-raised actor Adele Perovic, the show represents her first big industry break after graduating from acting school. As a young actress looking to establish her place in a competitive industry, the 21-year-old says she’s thrilled to be involved, but it’s a shame more similar Australian dramas aren’t in production. “The stuff’s being written and there’s no shortage of talent,” she says. “It all comes down as to whether the networks will pick the stuff up.” Adele plays a rebellious graffiti artist alongside a young cast of similarly unknown talents: Ben Schumann, Brenton Thwaites, Emily Robins and Gracie Gilbert. While the other members of the crew were more than used to television production, Adele says it was a learning experience for her and her fellow on-camera colleagues. “It’s been funny to see the reactions of people in Brisbane when we’re filming in public. We were filming on Ann Street the other day and a lot of passersby were stopping to look, going ‘what the? Some people seemed to know what was going on though – it’s going to be great to see it when we’re all done.” SLiDE will air on FOX8 later this year.
The Melbourne International Comedy Festival literally takes over Australia’s comedy capital, Melbourne, each year with an enormous program of stand-up comedy, cabaret, theatre, street performance, film, television, radio and visual arts. KEPT one of my favourite t-shirts from when I was a kid. Well, I didn’t keep it, mum did. And I’m bloody pleased. That t-shirt was so cool, I never took it off. She’d have to sneak it into the washer when I went to bed and dry it overnight just so I could wear it again without tomato sauce stains down the front. It had a picture of John Travolta and Olivia Newton John in their Grease days. I reckon it could be a collector’s item now or what do they call it...retro (thank’s ed), it was my treasured possession. I found it the other day when I was at my mum’s looking for something and it got me thinking, how things like pop culture shape your youth. Back in the days when Friday nights were spent in front of the tele with your fish and chips watching BA Baracas and his A Team buddies blow up the bad guys, or a nimble-fingered MacGyver turn a bit of gelignite and a matchbox into a bomb. Cartoons like Fat Albert meant you could still call a kid fat without getting slaughtered for it and The Incredible Hulk (the

original with Lou Ferigno) made a kid believe he too might one day turn into an 8-foot tall green wrestler if someone pushed him too far. Grease, ET and Back to the Future made us want to find an extra terrestrial, drive a time machine and get a hot girl. And I’m a bit ashamed to say it but we were wearing Levi’s 501s with tucked in t-shirts (a very sad decade in fashion for blokes) Doc Martens and hyper colour t-shirts (did I mention it was a tough time for guys). Dressing up meant wearing a skinny leather tie with a pair of nomad shoes. We didn’t have electric scooters, it was a pushy and if you were real lucky, a set of spokey dokeys. The coolest kid in your school rode a chopper with a ripper banana seat and a set of handle grips that would make his arms look like a spindly praying mantis. Our parents drove Commodores, Datsun 180’s and Ford Lasers and Doc Brown’s time-travelling Delorian was the ultimate set of wheels. They were the ‘80s and times were mighty fine. Brands Nike, Reebok and Adidas were becoming mass-marketed sensations. Michael Jackson was pumping out more No.1 hits than he had young boys to his ranch; Billy Idol’s ‘Rebel Yell’ became an anthem for young wannabe punksters (today’s equivalent of emos) and Acker Dacker’s ‘Thunderstruck’ made my mum remove the stereo from my bedroom.

A mix bag of lollies would set you back 20c and a 45 record was just a few bucks. Computers were only just in the making if you were lucky enough to have one (or you went down to the rich family at the end of the street and played on their Commodore 64). Facebook was something that happened if you fell asleep while you were reading. You had to ride your bike to school and tuck shop was a meat pie and a warm fizzie drink. Singers had to do it tough in bars before they made it to any kind of superstardom and with the absence of Youtube, the closest thing we got to Justin Beiber was Rick Astley (and he was just as pathetic). It’s no easy thing to create a craze, and even harder to make it one that doesn’t dive from an ‘it’ brand, to a lifeless has-been overnight. Like any decade, you can be bigger than the Eiffel tower one minute, and then as obsolete as a rubix cube the next...rest in peace dear hypercolour, may you never come back to haunt us unsuspecting style victims again!

You’re thrown in at the deep end and work it out as you go. The amount of love I already have for my ever-wiggling bump is beyond words, so I can only imagine the emotion when I finally meet her. Her husband Steve Johnson is a V8 supercar driver – which sees him racing all around the world and Australia. “Motherhood is...vomit on your sweater, not being able to find the time to wash your hair and a tiredness beyond explanation. It’s ‘Mum, I want this, mum I want that’ and a tantrum if we don’t give in,” she laughs. “But the best part is, it’s a guaranteed smile and a big hug at the end of a bad day and endless kisses and I love you’s. It’s the little drawings and cards they make for us that are scribbled with such proudness. It’s life’s greatest and most rewarding achievement. It’s a truly amazing gift.”

Once the young face condemned across the globe for her controversial launch into modelling, Maddison Gabriel is now a 16-yearold beauty, working for Elite modelling agency in London, New York and Milan.
F
rom the age of six, Maddison Gabriel has wanted nothing more than to see her face up in lights. Parading around her parents’ living room in her mum’s high-heels and red lipstick, she’d practice her stride and pose pretending the coffee table was the runway and her stuffed toys her audience. At 12, she entered a teen magazine Model Search that launched her burgeoning career. Blowing everyone away with her striking features and bee-stung pout, Maddison went on to win the national beauty pageant and secured a modelling contract. The following September, only days before her 13th birthday, Maddison was chosen ahead of models 15 years her senior, to be the official ambassador of Australia’s annual Gold Coast Fashion Week – a move that stirred a furore throughout the nation and around the world. Former Prime Minister John Howard led a chorus of international criticism and child protection groups were outraged saying she was “too young for the job”. Howard strongly criticised the decision saying it was unacceptable. “Catapulting girls as young as 12 into something like that is outrageous,” the thenPM told reporters. He continued to say Australia should follow the example of Europe and ban models younger than 16 years old appearing on catwalks. “There should be age limits, I mean there has to be, we do have to preserve some notion of innocence in our society.” The constant upheaval and negative media exposure brought Maddison and her family to tears. “When it happened I was really upset. I thought it would ruin everything,” the young model says. “I couldn’t understand why everyone was making such a big deal about it…I had to leave school early one day because the media kept trying to get photos of me.” May 2011

Maddison’s mother Michelle defended herself and her daughter fiercely at the time after numerous insults were hurled her way, including those from within the industry. US TV star and former supermodel Janice Dickenson was quoted saying Michelle was a “stage mum, just like Britney (Spears’) mum”. But Michelle brushed it off. “Hurtful comments were made by people who didn’t know the situation. It was all taken out of context at the time but now she’s proven who she is and what she is doing.” Today the Palm Beach beauty says the controversy was a blessing in disguise for her budding career. “Now I think it actually helped,” she quips. And like the saying goes, ‘all media is good media’, right? “Exactly! …just last week, a woman came up to me and asked ‘are you that girl?’” Now, four years after the uproar, the year 12 Elanora State High School student is a star. The media attention generated interest from many international modelling agencies including Chadwick’s and Ford Models, but she signed with Elite Models in July 2008. She has since appeared in editorials in Elle, Dolly, Creme, Girlfriend, Rush, Limewire, Looks Book, Muse, and Bridesmaid. She starred alongside other mainstream models in Bryan Ferry’s video clip for ‘You Can Dance’ from his Olympia album and is set to appear as an extra in Australian drama Water Police. “I’ve been doing a lot of work overseas, but I’m concentrating on finishing school at the moment and then I plan to go to London to pursue modelling full-time next year. I understand it is not something I can do for the rest of my life though so I’m also studying for a diploma in beauty therapy now as well.” With the beauty and brains, there’s nothing holding this girl back. Wish you were here... Mother’s Day isn’t always fun. We talk to one local mum whose own loss means on this day, she’s torn between grieving and making it a day of celebrating with her own children. May 2011

other’s Day is meant to be a day when we thank our great old mums for all the special mummy things they do for us. But in this sad tale, it’s a grim reminder of what is missing from a young mum’s life. Eleven years ago, at 26, Gold Coast mumof-two Natasha Markham watched her mother, Megan fade away after a brutal battle with cancer that eventually took her life when she was only 48. Originally diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, Megan had been in remission for 16 months before the disease found its way to her lungs and slowly began sapping her once vibrant life. Megan never lived to see her two beautiful grandchildren – Judd, 6, and Zoe, 5 – nor did she get to see her daughter marry her husband,

Andrew. “Grandparents day at school is very difficult for the kids because they only have one surviving grandparent – their gran – and she still lives in South Africa, so we have very little family here. “The kids often speak about their ‘Granny Megan’ who lives up with the stars, and Zoe especially would have loved to have had my mum around. There is that special bond between a mother and a daughter and that’s one of the things I miss the most. I didn’t get to ask my mum’s advice on how to bring up my kids. I don’t even know where I was born,” says Natasha, an only child who was raised in Johannesburg, before moving to Australia with her own family in 2007. “I had to nurse my mum at home and watch www.getitmagazine.com.au
her slowly deteriorate month after month. She weighed little more than 38kg when she passed away. It’s such a vicious and unforgiving disease,” she says with tears welling up in her eyes. “My mum would ask me to help her plan her funeral from her bedside and that was one of the hardest things I had to do. She was very determined to have it done her way. She would say to me that she didn’t want people wearing black at her funeral and that it had to be more of a celebration of her life rather than a mournful, grey day.” Natasha’s little girl Zoe believes her grandmother makes rainbows appear in the sky – a sign that always reminds Natasha of her mum because on the day of the funeral, there was a vivid double rainbow covering the sky. “I always tell Zoe that when there’s a rainbow, it’s Granny Megan saying hello, so now she’s convinced my mum makes them appear.” Megan would often remind her daughter that life after she was gone should carry on as normal, though she’d still be in it in some small way. “She would say to me, ‘every day at 12 o’clock, I’ll think of you and you must think of me.’ I laugh about it now, but obviously that was her way of coping, of trying to let me know that she will always be watching over me.” Natasha and her mum were inseparable and that makes her loss even harder to bear. “We were hardly ever apart when I was growing up – my mum used to say that we had more in 26 years than some people have in a lifetime.” Now on Mother’s Day, Natasha and her children spend the day baking a cake and then later, release balloons in the sky to celebrate the mother and the grandmother they no longer have in their lives. This year, the date will fall a week after what would have been Megan’s 59th birthday so they will spend the day at the beach – a place she often loved to visit. “One of the last memories I had with my mum was when we went shopping to buy boots and she told me she didn’t need them because she wasn’t going to live long enough to wear them. That was heartbreaking. Even though she was being practical in a sense, it was cutting to think she would never get to see another winter.” These days, Natasha often finds herself
looking at other mother and daughters shopping together and can’t help but feel a little envious she no longer has that chance. And as time goes by, her loss begins to take its toll – especially on Mother’s Day when everyone else is celebrating with their families. As part of a natural grieving process, Natasha has felt her memories begin to fade. “I find myself feeling that dreams are all I have now. Sometimes I ask my mum to visit me when I go to sleep...I still miss her so much.” Words: Adrienne Porter

It’s blood and guts alright but not like it’s portrayed on TV. The real-life CSI’s have to deal with gruesome crime scenes on a regular basis. And there’s certainly no glamour in this often-macabre job.

ho’s not guilty of curling up on the sofa and watching a crime scene investigative drama like Law and Order or CSI and being drawn in by the grizzly yet thrilling portrayal of modern forensic science? If you were to watch the TV show you’d probably think the crime scene business was a pretty glamorous gig. But you’d be mistaken. Unlike the dramatised versions where the lives of detectives are more dramatic than the actual crime, real CSI’s lead a seemingly normal life – well, apart from dealing with the deceased. As these television dramas continue to grow in popularity, so does the public curiosity for forensic science and the real people behind the blood-illuminating compound, luminol. Get it magazine went in search of one such a person and found it in the form of Superintendent Michael Keller from the Queensland Police Forensic Services. “I’ve had an interest in forensic science since high school and actually did some work experience with the Queensland Police Service in year 12. I would say it has been a passion of mine since then,” he says. Today’s forensic officers can spend several days at a crime scene, using different techniques in order to locate, interpret and collect evidence. “Crime scene examiners do not wear expensive three-piece suits to a crime scene, they wear clothing designed to prevent contamination of a crime scene. The fictitious scenarios seen on shows like CSI tend to glamourise the profession. Although the theories and methods are pretty much accurate, in reality, crime scene examination can be very laborious and time consuming,” Keller adds. An average day-in-the-life of a forensic scientist can be extremelyt varied. Apart from examining crime scenes, they are required to complete reports for court matters, attend to other administration duties and attend ongoing training. No star wagons waiting in the wings. Once at a crime scene, there are several processes required during the examination. May 2011

First, an initial assessment is required and from there decisions are made regarding how the evidence is to be located, recorded and collected. “Crime scene examiners use different tools to locate evidence including everything from crime scene lights, to chemicals, which can make bloodstains luminescent. Specialist photographers are used to record the scene alongside other specialists that interpret evidence at the scene – like bloodstain patterns. Once evidence has been recorded and collected, it can be further dealt with in order to form opinions. “Crime Scene examiners are also required to attend autopsies of suspicious deaths in order to assist the pathologist in the collection of evidence from the body and to photographically record the evidence.” While television shows portray a magnified view of a Forensic Scientist there are certain similarities within the role, for instance the TV show CSI uses luminol, a compound that detects blood, even invisible blood, and illuminates it. Thanks to the graphic nature of these CSItype shows, not much is left to the viewer’s imagination – with storylines that mimic modern day crime scenes, notorious for their gruesome murder and autopsy scenes. It’s not uncommon to see a dead person laid open on a table under dark lights or body parts strewn about in the desert. Even veteran director Steven Spielberg who has directed numerous bloody scenes in Jaws and Jurassic Park, was quoted recently saying that television shows like CSI and Heroes are “too gruesome these days”. It takes a certain person to want to become a forensic scientist, dealing with extraordinary situations and challenges, which can often become haunting for the scientist conducting the case. If you have difficulty dealing with the sight of blood then crime scene examination may not be for you Superintendant Keller warns cautiously. “Be prepared to see some gruesome sights you also need to be sure you are able to cope with these types of situations by maintaining a balanced life and having friends and family for support. You need to be sure you are able to cope with these situations... by cases I’ve worked on, but some of them have certainly been thought-provoking and have had an impact on me. In particular, any case where the death of a child is involved is confronting. It is certainly very satisfying to work on a large case such as a murder and contribute to the arrest and conviction of the offender”. Forensic science, like any form of science, involves having an open mind and being impartial. They can’t afford to hang on to pet theories or preferred suspects, they work to uncover facts that can be used as evidence. And, quite often, these facts may serve to rule out suspects. “To be a successful crime scene examiner you must be able to look at things laterally and possess patience, determination and persistence. A background in science provides not only the knowledge but also the methods in how to approach a problem and solve it. Make sure this is what you really want to do. A career in this field requires a lot of dedication and at times, long hours. Do as much research as you can into the profession and try speaking to some crime scene examiners to find out what it is really like.” Queensland Police Service Forensic Services recently won a State Government award for their Remote Data Entry Project of which Superintendent Keller was a part. The project is an initiative that involves the use of rugged laptop computers at crime scenes by examiners. These computers are then able to send information from anywhere in the state to another forensic section within Queensland. For example, it allows

the examiners to send a fingerprint image from a crime scene to the experts at Police Headquarters within minutes. This can result in the identification of an offender within 30 minutes. Queensland Police Forensic Service are leading the way by photographically recording and collecting physical evidence, which can then be used to identify offenders by comparing them against other databases. This breakthrough technology was the achievement of the Queensland Remote Data Entry Project team who, together with the Police Forensic Service, instigated the initiative. Prior to this technology, all evidence was hand-delivered or posted to a central laboratory, resulting in significant delays in offender identification. The project aims to make communities increase the efficiency of forensic processing. As a result our own Queensland CSI’s can identify an offender more efficiently, potentially preventing them from committing other offences, resulting in a reduction in the number of victims and lowering the cost to the community. In real life, these scientists are specialists. No single person possesses all the knowledge and expertise of every field of forensics. Fabulous Jordyn Yarker wants to see her name up in lights. And just like Miley Cyrus or Hillary Duff, the pint-sized Gold Coast 10-year-old is singing, dancing and acting her way into fame with the world stage in her sights.

right-eyed Jordyn Yarker is just like any other 10-year-old kid. She loves fashion, makeup, sports and going to the movies. Only this little girl has something special. She has fame and fortune in her sights and is well on her way to a successful career as a performer – so much so, she’s hoping to become the next Miley Cyrus. “I’d love to become like a Hannah Montana, or even Hillary Duff, she’s so cool,” the little girl says excitedly. And with a life already consumed by school, training, rehearsing and acting lessons, Jordyn is used to the limelight. “I hope the show will go off, and then I’d like to start my own fashion label because people will know me, so they’ll buy the clothes,” she says of her current project – a tween-based TV show. The homegrown young talent has already recorded six of her own tracks here on the Gold Coast, ‘Vivid’, ‘Candy Dance Floor’, ‘Boom, Crash, Bang’, ‘Ain’t Gonna Catch me’, ‘Inner Glow’ and ‘Rock Dat Beat’ with music videos, and a pilot for her own TV show titled Accord’n to Jordyn currently in production. “We’re going to pitch it to the networks shortly,” says her dad Cameron. “There’s nothing out there for kids her age, so we think it should be well-received.” And all-too-aware of the pitfalls of young fame, mum Lisa says it’s important she and her husband keep a handle on Jordyn’s career. “We are marketing to the 5-12 year olds. isn’t anything for that market. You’ve got Gaga for the over 16s or the Wiggles for the toddlers. There’s nothing in between. We want to convey positive songs and a clean, good message to these young girls,” she says. And, Lisa’s quick to add, stardom is something her little girl is chasing off her own bat. “It’s still very innocent. Her time is certainly condensed but these are her own desires to sing and create, this is what she wants to do. I’m very positive – and we all are as a family – about her following her dreams.” Cameron believes his daughter is a role model her peers can relate to and with the help of Abbe, she won’t have her spirit broken by fame. “Abbe and Jordyn spend a lot of time together and she has this mentor in Abbe, who’s been in the industry a long time so she knows all the pitfalls of fame and the hard work that needs to be put in.” Abbe Bradbury is Jordyn’s singing coach, songwriter and choreographer. “I was in a show when I was 14. I had to help the younger kids record their songs so I know how important it is to have someone who knows their craft and has a positive attitude when it comes to young talent. With Jordyn, I can guide her in the right direction. But we don’t want to force her to grow up too quickly at the same time, that’s crucial to her personal development.” Jordyn will perform her songs in a live show at Dreamworld (April 19-20) and isn’t fazed by large crowds. “I love it, it’s so much fun,” she says,
adding she rarely suffers pre-show nerves. And like any young girl playing dress-ups, the pretty tween is obsessed with fashion design – expressing her desire to one day visit the world’s style capital. “I’d love to go to Paris! They have really cool clothes there and I want to see the Eiffel tower. It all just looks so cool. I’ve got this book with stencils where you trace and make new designs. I do it with my friends,” she says as she flicks through her folder with all her outfits laid out like minature catwalk dolls. Reading tomes that would impress even a grown-up’s literary inventory – Dreaming of Chanel and Dior – Jordyn’s passion for all things style is clear. As is her ambition for success. Jordyn would love to one day become the next Demi Levato or Selina Gomez. And she’s already used to a hectic schedule with her time split between dance, singing, performing, soccer and even acrobatics which means she doesn’t usually wind up her day until later in the evening. “We always make sure she gets in her homework. It’s important to have her education and performance balance correctly,“ her father adds. Lisa – who grew up in Thailand and moved to Australia when she was six – says it’s important her daughters (they also have an older daughter, Erinn, 13) are exposed to all the opportunities in life that she missed out on. “You grow up wanting a normal life. home and so it became difficult for us to fit in) I wanted to ensure I had a strong family unit and give my kids all the opportunities I didn’t get. I look at Jordyn, and what she does, and I think it’s so amazing. I would be so petrified. I’m so very proud of her and what she’s done so far.” Lisa’s adamant Jordyn will never be exposed to harm or the overtiredness that can often burden young performers. “There has been the odd occasion where she’s been worn out. They are comforted by friends and distracted by society, but the Morcom family is numb with an enduring pain. Almost two years ago, Kim and Steve sent their son to school but he never came home. And after a two-week inquest they still don’t know why.

s the school brawl that claimed the life of the young teen raged on, Jai Morcom was said to have been pushed out of the way. “Get out of this!” a teen from one warring gang shouted. “What are you doing? I like you guys,” he yelled again, shoving 15-year-old Jai away. But what happened next continues to remain a mystery. Conflicting witness reports suggest there is certainly more than one side to this story, and have the courts in a heated dispute over who is actually to blame over this schoolyard tragedy. A recent inquest into his death heard Jai was dragged away from the fight at least three times. “Jai continued to run back into the fight,” says Detective Sergeant Terry Frost, the officer in charge of the investigation.

The inquest, at Lismore Local Court in February, heard Jai was a “willing participant” in the August 2009 brawl between Year 9 and Year 11 students over a lunch table. “Jai clearly entered the fight of his own free will and was aggressive towards others, engaging them in the fight,” Sgt Frost says. He says the Year 11 student who yelled at Jai, pushed him out of the fight a final time with an open hand and Jai stumbled into a crowd of 50100 students before hitting a wall. Tweed-Byron duty officer Inspector Owen King says there were several versions of how the incident unfolded – one was that Jai may have felt unwell and was questioned by a teacher before recess because he did not appear to be himself – www.getitmagazine.com.au

so it would be a shame to dismiss any underlying factors that may have contributed to Jai’s death. Describing the incident as “tragic” and “sad”, Insp King says, “there are a number of conflicting versions and we’re not going to speculate…it was recess time [and] the playground was full.” There was no CCTV footage, nor had any student filmed the fight on a mobile phone but witnesses seem to have a clear interpretation of what went on that morning. One classmate told police the fight, which began with petty bickering shortly after 11am during morning recess, was between two school gangs – the “emos” and the “footy-heads”. “One of the gangs stole a seat from our eating area. We stole it back and it turned into an all-out brawl.” The student alleges Jai had been beaten to a pulp. “It was really scary and intense. It was completely out of control.” Another student, who asked not to be named, claims Jai wasn’t even involved in the fight’s initial stages. “He was shoved up against a brick wall near the girls’ toilets by his throat. It was pretty rough then it started to get more serious. Someone spat on someone, then they just went psycho and started punching and kicking him. All these boys came in and they were just dominating him. Then he fell and hit his head. No one realised he had been knocked out and everyone kept kicking and punching him still.” Teachers performed CPR until paramedics arrived, but witnesses say Jai was frothing at the mouth and non-responsive. The teen was rushed to Mullumbimby Hospital, then transferred to the Gold Coast Hospital shortly after to be placed on life support. He was pronounced dead less than 24 hours later from a brain haemorrhage. What caused Jai to suffer this was one of the key points of the inquest. Presenting his findings after an emotion-charged two-weeks, the NSW Deputy State Coroner Hugh Dillon told a packed courtroom the exact cause of the massive brain haemorrhage that killed Jai could not be determined. “It is my disappointment to report there is no clear, reliable, persuasive evidence of what happened to Jai in the fight,” he says. “There is nothing to suggest Jai was bashed to death,” the coroner adds. “He was certainly not murdered.” The findings were delivered on day 10 of the inquest in which 30 student witnesses, along with teachers and medical experts, attempted to piece together the events behind the fatal brawl. www.getitmagazine.com.au
However, the coroner says there was no clear thread running through witness accounts, except that Jai had staggered out of the melee and slumped against a wall where he lost consciousness. The coroner says the fight scene was “a shemozzle” and it was not surprising that only fragments of the action had been seen by each witness. “It is disappointing to report that there was not a single witness account that actually gives a clear account of what happened to Jai in the fight.” He counters that while Jai’s parents may find the inconclusive evidence disappointing, it would be wrong to point the finger of blame at any one individual, group or school – Jai was
There is nothing to suggest Jai was bashed to death... he was not murdered The coroner pointed out that Jai had not caused the fight, but had most likely joined the fray in defense of his friends or in the excitement of the moment. Family members of the teenager say they’re extremely disappointed with the coroner’s findings. Outside court, Jai’s mother, Kim spoke to reporters asking them not to sympathise but rather empathise how she is feeling. “I still don’t have my boy,” she says softly. “If Jai was your child, think how you’d feel right now.” Jai’s father, Steve Drummond, tells Get it he was emotionally shattered by the inquest. “Jai was a beautiful boy,” he says. “He just walked into school one day and never walked back out. What happens when those kids walk into that school? Who are they the responsibility of...? “Regardless of anything – what type of person they are, what kind of parents they have – when they go in there, I would have thought there was some sort of order or structure involved in looking after those children. When someone doesn’t come out alive, I would just assume that, that’s not right.” Steve, who himself cross-examined every witness during the gruelling inquest, says Jai was with him through the entire investigation and had given him the strength to carry on. “He was helping me the whole way,” he says. “He was my inspiration through all of this.” The coroner, who says it would be wrong to point the finger at any one individual over the tragedy, delivered an emotional apology to Jai’s family and expressed his frustration at not being able to give a clear finding. “I can understand why, in such a situation they might be angry or wish to see someone brought to account for Jai’s death. It is my great disappointment to them that the police investigation, or indeed this inquest, were unable to achieve that result. I am very sorry and I offer my most sincere condolences.” The inquest heard contradictory versions of the fight, estimated to have lasted about a minute. Steve heard student testimonies that Jai had been punched repeatedly in the head and pushed against a wall with his head making a “loud thump”.

simply a victim of terrible luck. Steve says the medical evidence presented during the inquest had been “ambiguous and mysterious”, with experts unable to agree on whether Jai’s subarachnoid haemorrhage had been the result of blunt force to the head, hyperextension or whiplash to the neck, or natural causes. “This has been totally unexplained, it’s just been skirted over,” he says. “Jai was involved in a fight. He had a torn shirt [with] two blood stains on it. He had injuries on his body and they’re not suggesting that there’s any link to a traumatic subarachnoid haemorrhage. I just find that incredible. The fact they’re not putting such basic things together is incredible,” he says angrily. “The inquest has failed to give me any resolution. I just wish some kind of justice was made. “Everyone seems to be exonerated of any blame for Jai’s death. He went in there, he’s supposed to be looked after and he did not come out alive. I just want someone to take a bit of responsibility for this.” At very least, Steve would like a written apology from the NSW Department of Education for the death of his son. Steve vows to continue his search for answers and says he will “start opening new doors” of inquiry himself. “Whatever it takes,” he says. Words: Adele Rowlands-Dealey

In China’s case, particularly notable are the world-renowned Terracotta Army and, of course, the Great Wall of China. Perhaps most astonishing about the Terracotta Army is its relatively recent discovery in Xi’an, approximately 913 kilometers south of Beijing. It was only in 1974 that a group of farmers found this mythical collection of funerary statues when digging a well. It comprises over 8,000 beautifully preserved figures, including warriors, horses
and chariots, created to guard the tomb of Emperor Qin Shi Huang, who reigned from 221-207 BC. here are hundreds of foodie-type writeups floating through the pages of magazines in our great land, but a good whack of them seem solely focused on the culinary locales of Melbourne and Sydney. And when my fellow food connoisseur, Cameron, and I set off in pursuit of fresh and fabulous eats around our local neighbourhood, we were shocked to find a simple check online and a flip through a few sites turns up not much at all. So this is a record of our foodie related explorations through our hometown – roughly stretching from Byron Bay to Ascot and little pockets of food heaven in between. This month’s scout led us to five-star dining entwined in a chic, yet relaxed atmosphere at Glass dining and Lounge Bar. Casual by day, chic by night, Glass has been created through an understanding of the lifestyle, attitude and taste of the local market. Owners Shannan Harmelin and Patrick Gennari have partnered to shape and carefully perfect a sleek and sophisticated elegance the Gold Coast has been longing for. Having been open almost two years, Glass plays host to a team of friendly staff, with exceptional service standards and highly experienced chefs producing an exceptional menu. Using only the best quality produce, meats and fresh local seafood, Head Chef David Pommier has crafted an exquisite bill of fare all-inclusive of modAustralian delights with a French twist. Cam chose the angus beef tartare, eschallot, cornichons and tarragon with organic egg yolk, topped with crisp tempura onion rings and a smooth horseradish sorbet. I had king prawn risotto with a deliciously light garlic and ginger flavoured lobster bisque, aged parmesan and shell fish oil. The mains summit a little more traditional territory as Cam indulged on corn-fed chicken breast with cumin-scented baby carrot mousse, chestnut gnocchi, asparagus and

pink chandon sauce. I couldn’t go past the grilled whole New Zealand sole with vongole, parsley and lemon butter – it was divine! I was already as stuffed as a Christmas turkey but the dessert menu was just too tempting. Cam’s plate came with a swirl of coconut panacotta together with mango coulis, pastry twist and macadamia nut brittle. But it was the sphere of chilled nougat adorned with amaretto cherries alongside a warm crepe filled with a strawberry and rhubarb compote that sent my tastebuds to heaven. With yet another blissful dining experience at glass dining and lounge bar, I encourage everyone to not just take my word for it, but try it out for yourself. Glass allows relaxation for a long and lazy lunch – whether out on the terrace lounge with a favourite cocktail, in the dining room with a mouth-watering meal or by the fire place in the cooler temps of winter. have been speaking to a few people with regards to tax strategies and asset protection. One of them uses a “family/ discretionary trust”. How would I know if this is the correct avenue for me? There are proposed changes to legislation governing family/discretionary trusts. The Assistant Treasurer, Bill Shorten, has proposed new legislation to clarify the way discretionary trusts are taxed. If the rules are changed, the many hundreds of thousands of Australians who use family/discretionary trusts may need to
update their trust deeds to reflect the new rules. The proposed legislation, to be enacted by the Federal Government, was announced on March 4, 2011, and will apply from the current income year 2010-2011. It focuses on two issues: Who pays the tax where the taxable income of the trust is different from the income of the trust that is available for distribution under the trust deed. For a variety of reasons, including differences between accounting and tax rules, a beneficiary may be taxed on a greater proportion of the trust income than they actually get. Whether it is possible for different beneficiaries to receive different types of income (such as discount capital gains), or whether they will be taxed as if they receive an ‘undissected share’ of all the taxable income of the trust.

It’s called innate intelligence, and it’s that power to heal we are all blessed with. You can’t buy it or swallow it. You just need to let it work without interference. This is where subluxations come into it. They interfere with normal healing by blocking the flow of electrical impulses from our brain to our body. Remove the subluxations, and miracles happen. So what is a subluxation?

Subluxations may be devastating… A Subluxation is any misalignment of the spinal bones which chokes the spinal cord and spinal nerves. As you know, your brain and nervous system is the master controlling system of your body. It has ultimate control of over 50 trillion cells that make you breathe, smile, digest, swallow and even control your blood pressure! When the spine misaligns its called subluxation and this can put massive pressure on the spinal cord and nerves. Imagine that! And what’s worse, is that usually we can’t even feel it. Less than 10% of the nervous system carries or perceives pain. That means things we do every day, such as sit at a computer or playing sport, can cause misalignment, and put pressure on the nerves, weakening our nervous system. Sometimes we are lucky and we get some body signals such as headaches, fatigue, and back pain, telling us there is something wrong.
