SAN DIEGO Spring is in the air, the flowers are blooming and the fair is coming to town! Are you ready to experience springtime in San Diego? We have plenty of options for you to get out in the beautiful sunshine. Check out our handy guide to San Diego County, and the maps in the back of the magazine which will help you explore this amazing area!

SAN DIEGO CITY MAP

NORTH COUNTY

Pacific Beach (aka “PB”): We sometimes refer to it as Party Beach because of its fun bars and restaurants, like The Local Pacific Beach, which are perfect for party hopping.

Carlsbad: A family-focused community home to LEGOLAND®, The Flower Fields, Carlsbad Village and local favorites Vigilucci’s Seafood and Steakhouse and Vigilucci’s Cucina Italiana.

Mission Bay: This is where you’ll find SeaWorld® San Diego, walking paths, picnic and bonfire areas, and beach volleyball. There’s also plenty of fun for families with small children both in the water and on the beach – no big waves to worry about here! La Jolla: This is an upscale area where you will find luxurious hotels, spas, shopping, fine dining, and amazing views of the Pacific Ocean. It’s also home to the Birch Aquarium.

Mission Beach: Home to the Giant Dipper, the historic wooden rollercoaster built in 1925, and Belmont Park, our version of the East Coast’s Coney Island. Old Town: The birth place of California, it’s filled with restaurants, like the popular Café Coyote and Fiesta del Reyes, plus shopping and numerous free museums. It’s a great place to really learn about the history of San Diego.

Oceanside: It’s the most northern tip of San Diego with a fun marina to explore, and action-packed adventure at The Paintball Park at Camp Pendleton. Encinitas (also includes neighboring areas Leucadia and Cardiff by the Sea): An area of relaxed surf cities with a great variety of beaches, cool and funky shops and boutiques along Highway 101, a vibrant surf culture, yogi’s doing yoga, vegetarian restaurants and boho-chic hipsters. EXPLORE SOUTH COUNTY Ocean Beach (aka “OB”): Filled with beach bungalows and cottages, you’ll find a relaxed bohemian crowd who prides themselves in the variety of small businesses and locally-owned establishments, like Wonderland Ocean Pub. OB’s waterfront is known as Dog Beach where dogs can enjoy being leash-free 24 hours a day. Downtown/GasLamp: Historic district in the heart of Downtown with nightclubs, lounges, live music venues, and plenty of restaurants. You’ll also find Petco Park, home of the San Diego Padres baseball team, and the Convention Center located downtown. Hillcrest: A vibrant neighborhood with numerous locally owned businesses. Hillcrest is known for its restaurants, bars, clubs and shopping that cater specifically to the LGBT community. This region of San Diego is incredibly unique and so much fun! Coronado Island: An affluent resort city which is home to Hotel Del, one of the oldest and largest of all wooden buildings in California and considered a national and California historical landmark. Coronado Beach was rated #1 in the U.S. in 2012 according Dr. Beach, and Orange Avenue is our favorite place to take a stroll. There are also more retired admirals per square foot on the island than anywhere in the world. Balboa Park: The historic park offers 1,200 acres of beautiful open spaces, gardens, museums like the San Diego Natural History Museum, theaters, amazing architecture, and of course, the world-famous San Diego Zoo. Point Loma (also includes Shelter Island and Harbor Island): This is a great spot to go sport fishing or to explore the beautiful marina filled with “super yachts.” It’s also home to the Cabrillo National Monument. Mission Valley (aka Hotel Circle): Offers great shopping at the Fashion Valley Mall, and during football season you can watch the San Diego Chargers play football at Qualcomm Stadium. By: Dawn-ReneE Rice For over 100 years, San Diegans have had the pleasure of cruising the bay and seeing the sights with Flagship Cruises & Events. This locally and family-owned yacht charter, cruise and events company features a premier fleet of high-end yachts managed by charter consultants, captains, crews and gourmet chefs. Their numerous services include fabulous gourmet dinner cruises, buffet brunch cruises, yacht and boat charters and more. You can also enjoy harbor tours, whale watching, a thrilling ride on The Patriot jet boat, or take the ferry to and from Coronado Island. Flagship Cruises & Events is the only local cruise company that prepares all of its meals on board their yachts, and is the only jet boat thrill ride provider in San Diego. When you take a harbor tour, you will experience the best views of San Diego Bay. You can choose the professionally narrated, one- or two-hour tour, which runs daily year round and offers comfortable seating inside and outside. And, if you get hungry or thirsty, there are snacks, beer, wine and sodas available for purchase. One of their more popular options for you to choose from are the luxury cruises. There are so many fun tours and events to choose from. Where do we even begin? You can enjoy dining cruises, private charters, corporate events, weddings, holiday cruises and so much more. A dining cruise is a great date-night option, with the breeze from the bay blowing gently across your face and the sun setting beyond the horizon as you dine on gourmet meals made fresh on the ship.

Their champagne Sunday brunch cruise is one of our favorites, and it’s the perfect option for you and your family or significant other to enjoy a lazy Sunday afternoon. As you come onboard, you’re greeted with a tasty mimosa and led inside where you can take your seat at a whiteclothed table while listening to the live entertainment. Soon afterwards, you take off from the dock and then it’s time for the best part of the cruise – the scenery. Or maybe it’s the food? Either way, you can’t go wrong with both. Once you’re on your way into the bay, the gourmet buffet is opened up and you can eat to your heart’s content. Or, as much as your belt will allow. They have everything from a chef-attended omelet station to the American breakfast station for all your favorites – scrambled eggs, Applewood smoked bacon, and oven-roasted potatoes, to name a few. You can also get your fill of seafood, sushi, and various salads inspired by the farms of Southern California.

Let’s Go Cruisin’! Cruise the Bay with Flagship Cruises & Events If you want to spice things up a bit, make sure to visit the Old Town Taco bar featuring hand-carved meats, fresh tortillas, and all the trimmings to make a tasty taco. After filling up your plate, take it outside the cabin and sit at one of the tables on the deck so you can enjoy the beautiful weather and see the sights. When your plate is empty, you can go back for seconds, or hit the dessert bar for yummy treats like cheesecake, carrot cake, or strawberries you can dip in their chocolate dessert fountain. Once you’ve had your fill, head up to the observation deck where the view is amazing! You’ll see everything from the San Diego skyline and the Coronado Bay Bridge, to the seals relaxing on the docks. The entire cruise around the bay may only last two hours, but it will create a lifelong memory. If you’re in the mood for shopping and exploring, Flagship Cruises can ferry you out to Coronado Island on a 15-minute ride across the bay. You can depart from two locations, Broadway Pier and the Convention Center. Once you reach Coronado, you’ll depart at the Coronado Ferry Landing where you can spend the day shopping, dining and exploring.

The waterfront marketplace is full of interesting shops and restaurants. They also offer a unique way to taxi around with their San Diego Water Taxi service, which offers on-call transportation along San Diego Bay. During the winter months, whale watching is a popular attraction and Flagship has two types of whale watching experiences. They offer an excursion with Birch Aquarium, who has partnered with them for more than 15 years to provide this fun and educational experience. Or, you can venture out on an exciting 30-minute thrill ride on their newest addition to the fleet, the high-speed jet boat named The Patriot, and watch the majestic gray whales on their roundtrip migration. Exceptional Sushi BY MADISON TEAGUE When you’re San Diego’s premier sushi bar and restaurant, with over 40 award-winning wines, and 30 of the world’s best sakis and specialty rolls, your name is probably Harney Sushi. With two different locations in Oceanside and Old Town San Diego, you won’t need to drive too far to fulfill your sushi cravings. Harney Sushi in Old Town is incredibly intimate, and conveniently located on Harney Street. As you walk in, you’ll see a DJ and a lounge-style restaurant area lit by large, exotic aquariums. There is also a sizeable sushi bar with plenty of seating, and two gorgeous patios for larger groups. While the restaurant may be a bit smaller than most signature eateries, the menu is colossal. Thankfully, I was with a large group of people because there was so much variety to choose from. We started the evening with two delicious cocktails. The kiwi-flavored Koalaty Time and the lychee-flavored Shaolin Dragon. Our server was so helpful and fun, and had extensive knowledge about the entire menu when it came to helping us order. To start with, we ordered the Classic Tempura and Edamame Sampler. But there was nothing classic about this edamame. We sampled the garlic, soy truffle, sesame bacon and smoked salt. From the small plates menu, we ordered the Nicole Nigiri, a flavorful salmon and citrus combination. Next from the specialty rolls menu was the most popular roll, The Flaming Lip. This roll was a mouthwatering combination of fried tempura, jalapeño, spicy mayo, and sriracha. We finished up our meal with the elaborately decorated, and equally decadent, Triple Crown Roll. Typically I’ll wave away the dessert menu, but we gave in to temptation and said yes to the Dark Chocolate Gyoza and The Perfect Cheesecake with house-made vanilla bean ice cream.

Watch a Video about Harney Oceanside

My first experience at Harney was so impressive, I couldn’t wait to check out the Oceanside location. I was pleasantly surprised at how different the vibe was. Harney Oceanside is located on Mission Avenue, right next to the movie theater. Its modern elegance and spacious seating areas make for a completely different atmosphere. This time around, I only had one guest with me so we really scaled back on the amount of food we ordered. We started with two of their signature wines, the Arrow Wood chardonnay and the Byron pinot noir. To start our meal, we tried the Farmers Market Salad, made with fresh greens, arugula and frisée topped with sliced beets. Next, we shared the sautéed mushrooms. After the appetizers, we ordered the Seafood and Creamy Polenta Miso Soup, which was hearty and filling, with unique flavors and seasoned to perfection. Lastly, we shared the Rollz Royce and En Fuego Rolls from the large specialty rolls menu. Both rolls were fantastic, and if you like a lot of spice, you’ll love the En Fuego roll. Both locations are top of the line when it comes to sushi. Harney also actively participates in sustainable and local seafood options. From big groups and special events, to family outings, business dinners and romantic dates, Harney is the ultimate destination for exceptional sushi. harneysushi.com, Old Town – 619.295.3272, Oceanside – 760.967.1820 Plan Your GETAWAY

mimosa and the sounds of the water flowing down one wall of the room. Tiffany joined me a few moments later, feeling wonderfully relaxed from her Swedish massage. This type of massage is used to help you relax and unwind by using light to medium pressure, and blending long strokes with compression to increase your circulation and overall well-being.

On a recent visit with my friend Tiffany, we stopped by for a facial and massage. When we walked in, we were greeted immediately by everyone, making us feel welcome and excited about what was to come. After a short wait in the relaxation room, Tiffany was led away for her massage, and I was led to my room for a much-needed facial. And what an amazing facial it was! I was treated to the SkinMedica Hydrating Facial, a deeply hydrating facial that addresses all the needs of dry, sun-damaged, dehydrated skin. As a swimmer and acne-sufferer, I desperately needed some TLC! This particular facial also helps restore skin’s natural moisture balance and suppleness, while infusing the skin with hyaluronic acid, growth factors, proteins and antioxidants. I was promised immediate results, and that I would leave with healthier looking and more vibrant skin.

From the moment we walked in until the moment we left, it was a fantastic experience. I’ve had a few facials in the past, but nothing compared to how this one felt and the results it produced. Skinsational Spa also offers so much more for you to choose from. They have a collection of different types of massages, facials, bath and body rituals, aesthetics and medical treatments, to name a few. They also have manicures, pedicures, makeup application, tanning and hair removal. But it isn’t all just for women. Guys are welcome to come in and relax with products and packages designed “just for men,” from facials and massages to spa packages and grooming. Couples can book “Suite Escapes,” or if you’re looking for an entire day of pampering, book one of their Day Spa Packages. Fan favorites at the spa include the Couples Rejuvenator, Tropical Organic Manicures and Pedicures, and the Intraceuticals Oxygen and Epicurean AntiAging Facials. You’ll also find spa brands such as Ultherapy, SkinMedica, IsClinical and more.

After my time was unfortunately up, I went back out to the relaxation room while the skin care products had time to absorb, wearing a plush, fluffy robe provided by the spa. As I sat quietly, I relaxed with a tasty

BREWS & BEERS

CRAFT BREWING WITH OCEANSIDE ALE WORKS Text and Photography By Marci Pascua

According to the urban dictionary, craft beer is defined as an explosion of art and science coming together to build a drinkable masterpiece. I think Oceanside Ale Works truly took this definition to heart. With more than 100 microbreweries in San Diego County, standing out from the rest is a task in itself.

Watch a Video about SD Tap Room

Watch a Video about Green Dragon Tavern

Oceanside Ale Works is no exception to standing out with their various awards and most of their beers hitting double digits in alcohol content. But that’s not the only reason to visit OAW. Since opening their doors in 2005 and being the 14th brewery to pop up in San Diego County, OAW has been brewing beers for even the mightiest of craft brew palates. Their brew specialties fly off the shelf before they even have a chance to announce their arrival. Mark Purcell, the breweries founder, began like most microbreweries – from his garage. Mark was a high school math and wood shop teacher turned brewer extraordinaire when his love for beer couldn’t be contained. His first pale ale, Pier View Pale Ale, is still a favorite at the brewery, along with many others such as DUDE IPA, with Mark’s mug right on the label and a gold winner at the International Beer Festival in Del Mar. Elevation 83 Extreme Pale Ale, most notably named after the elevation of Oceanside, Calif., is another local favorite. At any given time, there are seven OAW brews available annually, and another seven to 10 seasonal brews, which are all cleverly named. And if that wasn’t cool enough, OAW is also a teaching facility for those looking to learn the craft of beer making. When you arrive at OAW, you’ll not only notice the colorful art on the walls and ‘50s diner seating, but the crew is bottling brews right next door. All OAW beers are crafted and bottled on site. On most nights, the smell of grilled burgers from the food truck is guaranteed to have your taste buds watering, and the tantalizing Orange Agave Wheat beer will have you writing home about it. Oceanside Ale Works beers are in high demand all across the country. So stop by while visiting North County and try out some tasters, or go big and grab a growler. Either way, OAW won’t disappoint your yearning for a delicious handcrafted brew. oceansidealeworks.net, 760.721.4ALE(4253)
