Sculpting in silver - a unique design heritage Georg Jen sen’s t i me- def y i ng eleg a nc e re st s on a unique aesthetic heritage. Georg Jensen h i m s e l f t r a i ne d a s a s c u lptor at t he R oy a l Danish Academy of Fine Arts but soon turned his skill to silversmithing, conjuring creations out of the metal that defied the thinking and c on st r a i nt s of t he t i me. H i s approa c h w a s innovative, his ideas revolutionary. Yet his skill was firmly grounded in Danish design tradition – clean, minimalist - and the highest levels of meticulous, hand crafted quality.

110 y e a r s l a t e r a n d t h e s i n g u l a r c r e a t i v e vision of one man is now a globally renowned design phenomenon. Organic and sculptural, intel lect u a l yet st ra ig ht for wa rd, a lways origina l, a Georg Jensen piece is distinctive for its complex simplicit y, for its abilit y to transcend form and function, and its capacity to change our perceptions.

Silversmith and sculptor Georg Jensen (1866 – 1935) opens his f irst studio at No. 36 Bredgade, Copenhagen, in 1904. Through his mastery of both sculpture and silversmithing and his visionary design ideas, he became one of the most influential designers of the 20th century.

The Georg Jensen story 110 years of skilled craftsmanship

The essence of Danish design and Swiss watchmaking precision Since 1969, Georg Jensen has collaborated with some of the 20th centur y’s most inf luentia l designers to create some of the world ’s most compelling watches. Defined by their design, pared down, stripped of all but the bare essentials, each collection ref lects the personal ideals of the designer. Yet each tells the Georg Jensen story with clarity and purpose – a story of hand crafted quality, t i me le s sne s s , e le g a nc e. It i s t h i s pu r it y of focus that delivers timepieces of exceptiona l originalit y and watches that are unexpected, understated, bold, iconic. At the heart of each line is exquisite attention to detail, a discipline gifted from the Georg Jensen silversmiths to the watchmakers. Curved sapphire cr ysta l glass perfectly complements t he scu lpted met a l lic c a se s. Fine Sw iss

movements drive slender, minimal hands over unpunctuated dials. From the f luidity of the watch case, to the suppleness of the strap, to the lustre of the 18 carat gold and mirrored polish of the stainless steel, nothing is left to chance. T his profou nd respect for cra f t sma nship extends deep into the inner workings of each watch: within the sculptural metallic forms lies absolute precision. Intricate mechanisms, fine components a nd rhy t hmica lly moving pa rts a ll combine sea mlessly in t he highest Swiss watchmaking tradition. Tod ay, G e org Jen sen i s proud of it s watc h c ol lec t ion s t hat c ombi ne t he Georg Jen sen spirit with cutting edge horolog y. These are watches that not only tell the time, but define the times.

Reinventing the very idea of timekeeping The Vivia nna Ba ngle is a n icon, sea mlessly blurring t he line bet ween horolog y a nd jewellery. Numberless, strapless, mirrored, its complete lack of distracting adornments is a singular departure from the expected. It was ever the de sig ner’s i ntent ion to cre ate a watc h t h at ‘ liberates the wearer from the convention of time’. Viv i a n n a’s f l aw le s s m i n i m a l i sm i s at onc e sensua l a nd tactile. Wit h no appa rent beginning or ending, it exemplif ies Vivianna Torun’s abilit y to mould f lexible, sculptura l forms from seeming ly solid materia ls. T his ae st het ic is f u r t her en ha nc ed by t he openended design to give the impression that the Ba ng le f loat s above t he w rist, t he u lt imate symbol of elegance, femininity and eternity. D e b u t i n g i n 19 62 a t t h e L o u v r e ’s Mu s e é des A rts Décoratifs, the Ba ngle ha s been in continuous production since 1969, immediately becoming one of t he most unforgettable w a t c h e s o f t h e 2 0 t h c e n t u r y. To d a y, t h e Bangle holds a permanent place in New York’s Museum of Modern Art.

Sculpted from a single swirl of stainless steel, Vivianna is a treatise on f luidity. The open-ended bangle has no obvious beginning or end and brings the highly-skilled craft of silversmithing to horology. The ref lective, mirrored face is a signature of the designer and her fascination with natural, orga nic forms. It is a lso ava ilable in white, brilliant cut, Pavé set diamonds. Nu mb e rle s s , t he me s me r i s i n g l i ne s of t he d ia l a re i nter r upted on ly by t wo pol i shed, stainless steel hands. All Bangles have a 2-hand movement. T he inclu sion of convex double cu r ve Sapph ire cr y st a l add s a f u r t her layer of femininit y, creating a sensua l and tactile timepiece. Made to the highest standards of craftsmanship, Vivianna is fully Swiss Made and is available in Quartz movements. It is water resistant to 5 ATM.

“Back then, watches were only chronometers – measures of time. I wanted to free people from the slavery of time. A watch should not make us prisoners of time, but liberate us.” - Designer Vivianna Torun Bülow-hübe

A master jeweller, she moved to Pa ris i n 1956 where she qu ick ly g a i ned a n international following. Torun’s designs were inspired by the natural shapes of nature - f lowers, leaves, swirls and t he f low of water. Her unique gif t t hen lay

in being able to shape solid metal into these asymmetrical and seemingly f lexible forms. Her work has been pronounced “a milestone in the history of modern jewellery” and is sober and minima list, yet utterly captivating. Her collaboration with Georg Jensen began with the Vivianna Bangle in 1969 and continued to the end of her life. Her legacy is unparalleled.

Henning Koppel’s design ethos, so evident in the eponymous watch, was to focus on beauty in its purest form: each concept pared to the bare essentials and then rendered in exquisite detail. This manifests in the Koppel watch as the simple dots that replace traditional numeric

The minimalist, f luent lines of the case and hands have become a classic and the overa ll aesthetic is one of uncluttered purity. KOPPEL

The designer, Henning Koppel Henning Koppel (1918 – 1981) was one of the most inf luential Danish designers of the past centur y and is responsible for what we have come to u ndersta nd a s ‘Da nish design’. He ushered in a new era of sculptural functionalism - his mission wa s to ma ke ever yday life products beautiful as well as practica l - and with this approach, he pioneered the clean lines we now associate with modernism. Educated as both painter and sculptor at the Royal Danish Academy and later in Paris, he found international fame as a silversmith. He first collaborated with Georg Jensen in 1946, which marked the beginning of his journey into designing jewellery, hollow ware and f latware. In e ver y way, he wa s g rou nd-bre a k i ng : h is jewellery was unlike anything ever created at the Georg Jensen studio in its f irst 40 years; his hollow ware was extraordinar y. W hen he launched the Koppel watch in 1978, again it

26

was revolutionary - f luent, clean lines housing a precision timepiece in a wholly original way. It was a watch rethought, both beautiful and functional. Throughout his life, Koppel continued to create iconic pieces, winning many awards including the Milan Triennial, the International Design Award and the Lunning Prize. His inf luence is a l most u npa ra l leled a nd t he integ rit y a nd appe a l of h is de sig ns rema in v it a l a nd undiminished. Koppel’s first works – a series of necklaces and linked bracelets resembling wha le vertebrae and microscopic organisms - were miniature masterpieces in imaginative modelling. Hen n i ng K oppel cre ated some of t he most iconic pieces of our time, many of which have defined the design lexicon of the 20th century.

Delta

The collection Georg Jensen’s Delta is named after the fourth le t ter of t he Gre e k a lph a b e t , s y mb ol ic a l ly re pre s e nt e d a s "Δ". Tr i a n g le s a re t he ve r y essence of stability, strength and elegance and these attributes have been designed into the very fabric of the Delta range. W hen viewed from t he top, t he elega nt a rc of the lugs can be seen to extend around the dial aperture, perfectly framing the bezel and stabilising the form. From the side you’ll see the tria ng u lated ca se prof ile that forms the foundation for the watch, adding an element of gravitas. These shapes are then offset by the oversized crown that is, on f irst impression, c ylind ric a l but on closer inspection revea ls itself to be constructed in the Delta style.

Water(continued): Recommendations: • 3 and 5 ATM rated watches: although water resistant should be kept away from water and should not be submerged unnecessarily. If the watch does get wet, pat dry with a soft cloth and leave to dry at room temperature. • 10 & 20 ATM rated watches: these can be submerged provided the crowns are securely closed. Again the watch should be gently dried with a soft cloth after becoming wet. • Before submerging a 10 or 20 ATM watch always ensure the crown is f irmly pushed or screwed into place. • After being submerged in salt or chlorinated water, always rinse the watch with fresh water and pat dry with a soft cloth. This ensures t hat a recognised test is per formed on t he w atc h by a qu a l i f ie d te c h n ic i a n to determine the integrity of the watch’s gaskets and whether any maintenance is necessary.

Cleaning: A build-up of grime on the watch can affect the watch’s operation and the integrity of the case. As such watches should be cleaned regularly to ensure that they remain free of dust and dirt. 80

• Watch cases can be cleaned with a soft cloth or soft bristle brush dipped in mild soapy water, then wiped again with a cloth dipped in clean water. Once clean, the watch should be patted

dry with a soft cloth and finally polished with a lint-free polishing cloth to work up a shine. (NOTE: before cleaning the crown should be securely closed so that water does not penetrate the case. Watches with a water resistance rating of under 10ATM should not be submerged in water). • Solid gold watches should be polished regularly with a soft piece of wash leather. • Bracelets can be cleaned with a soft-bristle

Shocks/Impact: While our timepieces are designed to withstand t he minor jolts a nd bumps expected during normal wear, violent impacts can easily cause damage. It is therefore advisable to: • Avoid extreme impacts or shocks to the watch as these may damage the movement, crystal or case.

• Not drop the watch intentionally and remove it before entering situations that may result in an impacts to the watch or strong jolts to the wrist - especially when playing sports (e.g. soccer, golf tennis etc…).

Sapphire Crystals: T he sapphire cr ysta l g la ss in your watch is highly scratch resistant, but not scratchproof. Care should be taken to ensure the glass does

not come into contact with abrasive materials or sharp objects that may mark the surface.

Scratches: To maintain the high gloss shine of your watch c a se a nd / or meta l bracelet, avoid wea ring other bracelets on the same wrist, as these can scratch the watch surface, particularly if they

contain diamonds. Diamonds can also scratch the sapphire crystal cover.

Mechanical Watches: Mechanical watches are driven by the power stored in a spring. In order to keep time, they need to be regularly wound, either by hand (as with manual wound models) or automatically through the inclusion of a special mechanism t h at u s e s t he move me nt s of t he we a rer to wind the spring (as in automatic models). All mechanical movements are composed of many m i nute spr i n g s, pl ate s, scre w s a nd ge a r s – somewhere between 50 and 300 – working in perfect synchronicity to power the watch. The sheer number and intricacy of the components ma kes mecha nica l watches highly sensitive, more so than quartz movements. However, if 82

properly maintained, their longevity is a given. Besides their longevity, mechanical movements are highly coveted because of their engineering – the wearer will usually have an appreciation of t he high level of sk ill, precision a nd cra f tsma nship involved in creating each individual timepiece. • A lways wind the crown in a clock wise direction. • When winding, do not force the crown when you feel the spring become tense toward the end of the winding process. Generally around 30 turns of the crown should be sufficient to

fully wind the watch. • When fully wound most mechanical watches with have a power reserve of around 40 hours. Daily winding is recommended. • Automatic watches are wound by the m o v e m e n t o f t h e w e a r e r, i t i s t h e r e f o r e important that the watch remains in motion if it is to remain wound and working accurately. For watches that are worn infrequently or by those who are not physica lly active, a watch winder is recommended. • Automatic watches must be correctly fitted to the wrist. If the watch strap is too loose the automatic winding function may be compromised.

• Automat ic watc he s c a n a l so be ma nu a l ly wou nd by t u r n i n g t he crow n c lo c k w i s e i n position1. It is recommended that if the watch has completely run out of power, it is manually wound (with about 20 turns) before wearing. • If the watch is not worn for extended periods, the movement should be wound regularly to prevent the lubrication from drying out. • Magnetic sources should be avoided (for e x a mple, c omputer s, sm a r t phone s, loudspeakers, airport metal detectors, etc.) as magnetic forces may have an adverse effect on your watch’s movement. In extreme cases, this can cause your watch to stop.

Leather & skin straps:Our alligator and calfskin watc h st r aps a re m ade of prem iu m qu a l it y leather to exacting international standards and are rigorously tested to ensure they are of the highest quality. If used under normal conditions, a le at her st rap u su a l ly enjoy s a l i fe spa n of around 12 months; longer if meticulously cared for. However this is highly dependent on how the strap is used and looked after.

materials (both natural and chemical) • do not expose it to harsh direct light (sunlight or artificial) for extended periods of time • do not ke ep it ne a r a n op en he at sou rc e (artificial or natural – fire, ovens, heaters, etc.) • if the strap gets wet, pat dry with a soft cloth a nd le ave t he st rap to d r y at norma l room temperature (a cool temperature is also fine; do not dry it next to a heat source)

It is normal for natural skin products to age and change colour with time and use – this is a part of their appeal. However, regular contact with water, sweat, chemica ls, sunlight etc... may accelerate the process and prematurely age the leather. To prolong the strap’s lifespan: • keep it away from corrosive and discolouring

Should a leather strap become dirty or stained rub the surface with a damp cloth moistened with water. Ensure the strap does not become saturated with water and dry immediately with a dry cloth. Mild soap can be used if necessary, by soaping the water and dipping the cloth into the soapy water before cleaning

Bracelets: Bracelets should be kept clean and free of dirt in order to ensure they function properly (see the ‘Cleaning’ section above). Should a bracelet

need to be shortened or extended, the watch should be sent to an authorized Georg Jensen store or After-Sales centre.

Watch Movements T h e m o v e m e nt o f a w a t c h i s it s w o r k i n g me c h a n i sm, t he en g i ne t h at d r ive s a l l t he watch’s functions. It moves the hands to tell the time and powers any additional complications such as the calendar, 2nd time zone hand and chronograph. Movements broadly fall into two categories –

quartz or mechanical, with mechanical being further divided into manual or automatic. A simple way to differentiate between quartz and mechanical watches is to look at the second hand: on a quartz watch, it has the tick-tick motion that moves once per second; on a mechanical watch it is a smooth, sweeping motion.

Quartz Movements A quartz movement is powered by a batter y and uses this energy to drive the hands. Quartz movements are highly accurate and eff icient,

requ iring minima l ma intena nc e a side f rom occasional battery replacements.

How a quartz movement works: The battery sends an electrical current through a small quartz crystal, electrifying the crystal to create vibrations at an almost perfectly constant frequency. These vibrations keep the movement oscillating and drive the motor that moves the watch hands. As long as the battery is fully powered, the electric current remains constant, which explains the incredible accuracy of good quality quartz watches.

Mechanical Movements Mechanical movements are driven by the power stored in a spring. In order to keep time, they need to be regularly wound, either by hand (as with manually wound models) or automatically through the inclusion of a special mechanism t h at u s e s t he move me nt s of t he we a rer to wind the spring (as in automatic models). All mechanical movements are composed of many m i nute spr i n g s, pl ate s, scre w s a nd ge a r s – somewhere between 50 and 300 – working in perfect synchronicity to power the watch. The 86

Besides their longevity, mechanical movements are highly coveted because of their engineering – the wearer will usually have an appreciation of t he high level of sk ill, precision a nd cra f tsma nship involved in creating each individual timepiece.

How a mechanical movement works: Mechanical movements use energy from a wound spring (rather than a battery) to power the watch. The spring stores energy and transfers it through a series of gears and other springs to drive a regulating mechanism that eventually turns the hands. There are two t ypes of mechanical movement found in lu xur y timepieces today: manual and automatic, each with unique characteristics. Neither is superior – more a matter of personal preference.

Manual Movements M a nu a l or “ h a nd w ou nd ” m ov e m e nt s a r e manually wound by turning the crown. They a re c on sid e re d t he mo s t t r a d it ion a l of a l l

movements and the technolog y driving these watches is hundreds of years old – it is the very essence of the Swiss watchmaking tradition.

How a manual movement works: Turning the crown several times winds the mainspring and stores potential energ y. The mainspring then slowly unwinds, releasing energ y through a series of gears and springs that ultimately powers the watch hands. Winding intervals (how often the watch needs to be wound to keep accurate time) depend on the power reserve capacity of the movement. Usually this is around 40 hours. Some watches require daily winding, while others need winding only every few days.

Automatic Movements watch is worn regularly, it will maintain power without requiring winding.

Technologies

In automatic or “self-winding” movements, the mainspring is wound by a rotor, which is set in motion by wrist movement. As long as the

How an automatic movement works: Automatic movements work much the same way as manual movements, with the addition of an oscillating metal weight called a rotor. The rotor is connected to the movement and rotates freely. With each movement of the wrist, the rotor spins, thereby winding the mainspring automatically. Winding intervals depend on how often the watch is worn, as watches featuring an automatic movement may still require manual winding. If the watch is worn every day and the wearer is moderately active, it will maintain timekeeping functions without winding; if it hasn’t been worn for an extended period of time, it will need a quick wind to garner initial power. It is possible to use a watch winder, which keeps the watch fully wound when not being worn. 87

Watch Complications A c ompl ic at ion i s a ny fe at u re or f u nc t ion in a watch, ot her t ha n t he d isplay of time. Complications vary in complexity, from simple date and calendar functions, to more complex dual time zone and chronograph complications, and eventually to ‘high’ complications such as minute repeaters (which issue an audible series of chimes that indicate the time) or tourbillons (w h i c h c o u n t e r t h e e f f e c t s o f g r a v i t y b y mounting the escapement and balance wheel in a rotating cage).

The more complications in a watch, the more diff icult it is to design, create, assemble and repa i r. A t y pic a l d ate- d i splay c h ronog raph may have up to 250 parts, while a particularly complex watch may have a hu nd red s more. Watches with several complications are referred to as "grand complications".

Date Complications A date complication simply displays the date. A day-date complication displays the day of t he week in addition to t he date. Dates a re t y pica lly shown numerica lly through a date window (or aperture) on the dial. A d ate c ompl ic at ion w it h d ate or d ay- d ate requ ires some input from t he wea rer: t hese watches automatically reset after completing 31 x 24-hour cycles, representing a full month. They therefore need monthly adjustment to

ensu re t he correct d ate is d isplayed du ring months of less than 31 days. To c omp e n s a t e f or le a p y e a r s a nd 3 0 - d a y months, watchmakers have developed advanced complications, such as annual and perpetual calendars, which track the calendar year more a c c u r ate ly, en su r i n g t he d ate do e sn’t h ave to be adju sted e ac h mont h. A s long a s t he timepiece is wound and running, the calendar complication will be functional and accurate.

Koppel 41mm 3-Hand Automatic with the date window at the 6 o’clock position. The date is set by winding the crown. The date function has to be manually adjusted at the end of 30-day months and at the end of February, to ensure the proper date is displayed.

88

Annual calendar A n a nnua l ca lenda r complication is capable of discerning the short months from the long (30 day months v 31 day months) and requires no adjustment over the course of a year. Once the watch is set (usually on 1st March) it will,

if kept wound, automatically adjust the date for each month, accounting for the cycle of 30 and 31 day months. It will, however, need an adjustment once a year at the end of February (to account for the 28 or 29 day month).

Koppel 41mm annual calendar with the date displayed in the double window at 12 o’clock and the month in the semi-circular dial at 8 o’clock. As long as the watch is kept wound, the date will only require setting once a year.

Perpetual calendar The key to this ingenious complication is that it can also calculate the year. This means it can accurately keep time over generations.

Technologies

A s t he na me implies, t his is a timepiece that never needs resetting (with the possible exception of daylight saving). It tells the time, the date and sometimes the day and month.

Chronographs A chronograph is more commonly referred to as a stopwatch. It enables the wearer to measure intervals of time without interfering with the normal time-telling function of the watch. Chronographs a re incred ibly accurate in recording time - from 1/100th of a second up to 12 hours – and are controlled by two buttons (also referred to as “pushers”) that control its functions – start/stop and reset.

Koppel 41mm chronog raph is fitted with an ultrapr e c i s e , S w i ss Made quartz chronograph movement under its sapphire crystal.

Power Reserve Indicator A mechanica l watch contains only a certain a mount of power in its spring to power the functions of the watch before it stops. T he power re ser ve i nd ic ator – e xclu sive to mechanical watches - measures the amount of power remaining in the watch by measuring the tension in the mainspring, and the amount of t ime t he movement c a n cont inue to r u n without requiring winding. A f u lly wound mecha nica l watch usua lly possesses sufficient energy for a few days before it needs to be wound again.

Stainless steel : The stainless steel (316L) used in Georg Jensen cases and bracelets is of very high quality and one of the best alloys available. It is resistant to corrosion from perspiration and salt (sea) water, has a low nickel content making it less likely to cause allergies and can be polished to a high lustre.

Super-Luminova Lumina nce is a vita l design element. It ha s become so common however, that we rarely think about how to tell the time in sub-optimal light conditions.

Super-Lu minova features extensively in t he Delta collection.

How it works: Super-Luminova, a granulate or powdered substance, is painted onto the requisite features, typically the hands, dial, indexes or bezel . • Colour – The range of colour ranges from c olou rle ss t h rou g h to incre a sing c olou r, or l i g ht . A c he m ic a l l y pu r e a nd s t r u c t u r a l l y per fec t d ia mond h a s no c olou r or hue a nd consequent ly, a hig her va lue. Georg Jensen uses only rare white stones (F-G), with a top Wesselton colour. 96

the diamond sits harmoniously within the broader watch design

• Carat – The carat is a measurement of how much diamond weighs. All other things being equal, the higher the carat weight, the more expensive the diamond.

Water resistance Water resistance is a feature of most premium watches and a core element of sports watches, including the Delta collection. A combination of specific design features ensure that the inner mecha nisms of t he watch rema in f ree f rom water, moisture and dust. The critical components of the advanced water resista nce seen in sports watches (with a 10 ATM rating or more) include: • Screw-down case back: E s s e nt i a l t o a ny h i g h p e r f or m a nc e s p or t s watch, a screw-down case back ensures water resistance for greater water pressures. Georg Jensen’s Delta Dive watches are water resistant to a maximum of 20 ATM.

case. The crown then screws into the thread of the tube, and gaskets are fitted to create a water tight seal. The water resistance rating is calculated using a static water pressure test under lab conditions, a n d i s e x p r e s s e d i n u n it s o f a t m o s p h e r i c p r e s s u r e (e . g . 3 A T M m e a n s 3 x n o r m a l atmospheric pressure, or 30m depth). Given that these cannot accurately ref lect real world conditions, it is important that a safety margin is allowed when using the watch. Please see the table below. For more information please refer to the Care & Maintenance Guidelines on page77.

• Screw-in crown: The crown is a potentia l wea k point – it is afterall an opening in the case. To eliminate this wea k ness, the winding stem is inserted into a tube, which is in turn inserted into the

Dive timers A d iv i n g w atc h i s sp e c i f ic a l ly de si g ne d to withstand underwater pressure. At a minimum, it features a water resistance greater than 10 ATM, the equivalent of 100 m. The Delta Dive is water resistant to 20 ATM, or 200 m.

that allows the wears to accurately track and control the time spent underwater. (It does not measure the amount of air in the scuba tank – a common misconception.)

A feature of high quality dive watches is the d ive timer. T his is a rotating elapsed be zel

How it works The bezel is a simple yet reliable timing tool. At the beginning of the dive, the descent marker / arrow at 12 o’clock on the bezel is aligned with the minute hand. A simple glance at the position of the minute hand relative to the bezel will indicate how much time as elapsed since the start of the dive (in minutes). Knowing the depth and this time, along with the no-decompression limit for that depth, a diver can dive safely. An added safety feature is the unidirectional (one way) rotation of the bezel – it ensures any accidental movement of the ring is always interpreted as less time remaining than actually does.

Tachymeter on the time needed to traverse a set unit of distance (e.g. 1km).

How to use a tachymeter The chronograph (stopwatch) measures the time it takes to cover this distance, while the tachymeter bezel provides a direct reading of the average speed achieved over that distance. For example, to measure your average speed while driving, start the chronograph at a road side mile / kilometre marker, then stop it exactly one mile / kilometre further on, at the next marker. The chronograph stop second hand uses the tachymeter scale marked on the bezel to indicate your average speed in km/h or miles/h for the distance you have just travelled.

Case Reference Number

Wit h t he roll-out of t he ne w collections in 2014 GJ Watches will shift to a new numbering convention for the various watch models that we of fer. T he ne w c a s e nu mb er i n g s y s tem will be an aggregate code that allows users to immediately identify the model without having to memorize a series of assigned numbers. The new case reference is engraved on the back of every watch and must be used in the relevant

space on the warranty card and quoted in all after-sales matters.

The new number convention is a seven digit code composed of four separate components, each with an assigned meaning:
