Investiture Week

October 1-5, 2018

Dr. Neal Weaver was inaugurated as GSW’s 11th President on October 5, 2018 in a formal investiture ceremony. An investiture formally marks the beginning of a president’s tenure, traditionally held during or at the conclusion of the president’s first year in office. It was a special time for GSW to welcome a new era of leadership and celebrate as a community. The week leading up to Weaver’s ceremony was full of events that celebrated GSW and the community. The theme for the event was Gaining Momentum: Storming into a New Era. As GSW is powering through Momentum Year, the theme emphasized the hard work and dedication that is launching GSW into a new era of leadership and success.

Canned Food Drive: Investiture Week began with a canned food drive, where over 1,000 items were collected for the GSW campus food pantry and Harvest of Hope and spelled out G-S-W.

Dive-In Movie: Students gathered at Deriso Pool for the Dive- In Movie, complete with popcorn, movie theater snacks and glow-in-thedark floats.

Greek Service Project: Greek students came together to apply fresh blue coats of paint to benches around campus.

Jaha Dukureh: 2018 Nobel Peace Prize nominee and GSW alumna Jaha Dukureh visited campus as the speaker for GSW’s annual Griffin Bell Distinguished Lecture Series and Convocation.

Glow Canes: The “Glow Canes” Golf Cart Parade featured carts decorated by student organizations and departments, followed by a glow party at the GSW Lakehouse.

Brand Reveal: GSW unveiled its new logo and branding campaign, Take Tomorrow by Storm, on the Marshall Student Center patio.

Pre-Concert Reception: Special guests, including Dr. Weaver’s parents (left) and other friends and family, gathered for a reception before the Chamber Concert.

Chamber Concert: The GSW Department of Music hosted performances by faculty and friends as a part of the 2018 Chamber Concert Series.

SurgeFest: SurgeFest Music festival brought the GSW community out for a night of fun and music featuring food trucks, yard games and a fantastic show from Unbreakable Bloodline and CLoud9 Vibes.

Weaver Family: Dr. Weaver’s sons, Blake, Brett and Austin, were in town for the festivities.

Investiture Ceremony: Dr. Neal Weaver was officially inaugurated by University System of Georgia (USG) Chancellor Steve Wrigley.

Luncheon on the Lawn: Following the ceremony, Investiture guests were invited to a luncheon on the front lawn featuring some of Dr. Weaver’s favorite foods and music.

First Friday: GSW’s mascot, Surge, enjoyed exploring Downtown Americus during the GSWsponsored First Friday festivities.

Roller Skating: GSW sponsored a glow-inthe-dark roller skating rink during First Friday in Downtown Americus.
