From The President

Greetings My Georgia Family!!!

Can you all believe it’s already October? I hope your school year is going well, you’re finding time to spend with family and friends, as well as time for some self care therapy. For me this year has been nonstop and as your 68th President, I wouldn’t have it any other way, it has been amazing! Best said as, “Life is a Journey with Problems to Solve and Lessons to Learn but Most of All…Experiences to Enjoy!”

That is what I want for each of you this year; created experiences for you to enjoy that will ultimately help you remember why you fell in love with GSNA and for our new members, measurable experiences where a place in your heart is carved out for GSNA.

I am honored to lead our association and with over 3,600 members across Georgia, we are a strong and vital organization focused on being your go to professional resource. Over 42 dedicated volunteer leaders, a strong group of industry partners, and our great GSNA staff make all this possible. Our association has so much to offer from networking to professional development and with you being a member of this band we are going to make great music together as we continue to Marching to the Heartbeat of Our Mission with a concentration on four sheets of music.

Growth in Membership

During the peaks of the pandemic our membership numbers took a hit. In some cases, it can be understood that a major life event can cause impacts in many areas and that is okay. But…ask yourself, what does being a part of a professional association mean to you? Words like networking, engagement, growth, relationships, fellowship, and valuable probably all come to mind. The one that sticks out most to me is FAMILY! Being a part of our association makes you a member of our family. Whether you are attending a national school nutrition conference or you’re on a zoom call with members from other states, when you say, “I’m from Georgia!” a smile graces your lips, you sit taller in your chair, or you plant your feet as you speak proudly.

Being a part of the Georgia Family means we have that southern hospitality that makes others feel good and welcomed when they come around us. We need you to keep that spark lit! We have made it easy for you to help us to grow our membership. Whether you want to Adopt A Heartbeat or join the Heartbeats on a Mission Membership Drive there are incentives when you speak loud and proud amongst your peers to bring more into the fold.

Development of Future Leaders

“There is almost no limit to the potential of an organization that recruits good people, raises them as leaders and continually develops them.” John C. Maxwell

The future success of our association will be based on those who have a true passion for our work and will jump in with very little understanding of what is expected of them. Oftentimes I ask, and the response is, I don’t really know what that is or what that means but I’m willing to try. This type of response gives me so much warmth internally because the passion they have for our association will cause them to want to learn and development themselves without it feeling like work. I always say, I can teach anyone the job, but I can’t teach them the passion for the job. One of my goals is to find ways to develop those that have the passion for our association. I plan to do this through webinars focused on leadership, enhancing our website with go-to information keeping you abreast of the latest knowledge, practices, and opportunities, utilizing our social media platforms to share current events and happenings around the state, and partnering with outside organizations to bring leadership development opportunities to our members. The first leadership development series will kick off October 25th with a webinar facilitated by SNA called, Your Conflict Style Inventory. This 1 hour webinar will explore five different conflict management styles and how each is used to approach difficult conversations with coworkers and/or stakeholders.

[continued on page 4] 3

[continued from page 3] This workshop will be followed by a session(s) that will be presented at Industry Seminar, another webinar and concluding for the year at state conference. All sessions will be different, but all focused on leadership and professional development. Stay tuned as this continues to develop and make plans now to participate.

Core Value of Industry Partners

Industry has been committed to GSNA since the beginning and has not wavered. I am committed to making sure they know how much they mean to us. We are so fortunate to have a group of industry partners that truly seek to find various ways to support our programs. They volunteer during National School Lunch Week or School Breakfast Week, show love to district employees during School Lunch Hero Day, and are always present at GSNA events. They are always working on ways to strengthen relationships. Industry helps make us Great! This year we are continuing on the same trends, just a tad bit different. It is important to me they not only have a seat at the table but a voice to engage and provide feedback. I see Industry a lot like I see my Maintenance team…I don’t make important equipment purchasing decisions without them first looking under the hood to check the mechanics for keeping it operating. Related to Industry, I don’t want to plan events requiring their participation without giving them an opportunity to provide insight on the project. The events we’ve had thus far have been great and it is with their constant engagement that will continue to support our organization. Our Industry Advisory Board is dynamic! It is led by Claudia Harry, with the team focused on enriching relationships, keeping industry partners informed, gathering feedback, and supporting our professional development efforts. Yes, I said supporting our professional development efforts. If you did not know our industry partners are multi talented! Outside of their normal “job” duties, they have already conducted professional development trainings, co authored articles with local and district presidents for GA Gems and are working to ensure future leaders are developed and ready to go through the GSNA Leadership Academy! Special shout out to Lea Ann Riley for partnering with Dr. Debra Morris to grow these amazing individuals into amazing leaders! We’ve done a lot already, but we have so much more to do!

Restoration of Association Finances

As we have seen throughout many areas in our lives, the pandemic impacted finances in many organizations. This year, we want to focus on restoring our association fund in order to keep

Marching to the Heartbeat of Our Mission. You are essential in the goal being met. Participation in conference, membership growth and Industry involvement will all contribute to our success.

In everything we do, we build in the opportunity for you to get to know your family whether through key events such as the Fall Expo, District Meetings, Mangers’ Retreat, SNAP Training, Industry Seminar, webinars, social events, or Annual Conference. Having a strong professional network that you can count on is essential. Our work is focused on enriching your experience as members, so I am always open to feedback and input on how we can better serve you. Just call me, I’ll be around! Feel free to reach out to me, any of our association leaders, or our great GSNA staff to get more involved TODAY.

Chair of District Presidents

Nakeitha Carter

Hello GSNA Family,

I hope that everyone is having a great start to the year.

As we all know, these last few years have challenged us both professionally and personally. However, we have stayed positive, and I am confident that our GSNA family will continue to be the Heartbeat of communities.

I am privileged and honored by the opportunity to introduce myself as this year’s GSNA Chair of District Presidents. As an employee of school nutrition for over 11 years, I have been an active GSNA member the entire time. I have held several elected positions within our GREAT association. These positions include Local President, Local Secretary, and District President. This year is my second term as the Chair of District Presidents for GSNA. Currently, I am also the Local President of the Fayette County Chapter.

You can see that I am passionate about what our association represents. I am also willing to extend my hand of service for both members and inspiring members. I am overly excited about all the great things our association has planned for this year under the leadership of our GSNA President, Ms. Alyssia Wright.

As Chair of District Presidents, one of my goals is to help boost membership by providing District Presidents with ways to engage with members to promote membership. This task can be achieved by guiding creative ways to reach the members. As you know, the members of the GSNA are the “Heartbeats” of our association.

Therefore, I would like to do everything possible to ensure we continue to “March” towards a successful year while getting back to "Building Healthy Children Ready to Learn." I look forward to seeing you all soon.

April Cox

Greetings!! It is a complete pleasure and honor to serve our great membership as System Level Chair.

I began my career 17 years ago as a food service assistant. Thankfully, I was introduced to GSNA that very first year. The association has continually blessed me both personally and professionally. I have benefited from receiving four educational scholarships and attending Leadership Academy. I have served in numerous offices to include Local President, District LLC Chair and GSNA Secretary. I have attended many training events including our Annual Conference, ANC and LAC in Washington, DC and also have been given the opportunity to train others as well. I have made many friends across the state, some of which I consider family. I mention all of this to say, our association is vital to the personal lives and professional growth of our members!

As System Level Chair, I am thrilled to sit on the Executive Board and serve on the Education Committee. I am passionate about helping others to grow, learn and become the member they desire to be. I look forward to serving with Alyssia’s rock-solid team this year!

Learning is tough work—and kids need fuel if they’re going to learn! That’s why a healthy midday meal is crucial to the growing children who go to school. Since 1962, when President John F. Kennedy created National School Lunch Week (NSLW), this annual observance has promoted the importance of a healthy school lunch in a child’s life and the impact it has both in and out of the classroom. But this year’s National School Lunch Week campaign theme, “Peace, Love and School Lunch,” is designed to remind you and your customers of the uplifting power of viewing life through a pair of rose-colored glasses.

11

National School Lunch Week 2022

Get ready for a hip & happening event!

There’s no reason to get all bent out of shape, man! You can stay mellow and meet each challenge when you stay focused on what really matters: doing the best you can to achieve the goals of your program, greeting each day, each coworker and each student customer with a smile and showing others, and yourself, kindness. Far out!

Without national waivers in place that allow all districts to provide free meals to all students in all schools, it’s more important than ever to do what you can to make the cafeteria a destination full of flavor and fun! You want your students excited and curious about what they will discover next on the serving line and in the dining area. Scheduled in mid-October, NSLW is a perfect opportunity to surprise and delight your customers.

School meals are nutritious, delicious and an amazing value, raising them high above off campus competition and meals brought from home. No one is better at serving up the creative, craveable menu items that kids demand while offering the nutritional profile that parents expect. And no one does so with better spirit and fun than you and your team. #NSLW22 will showcase the best of your school meals program as a source that satisfies both body and soul. It’s never too early to get ready for NSLW! SNA has developed a variety of tools and resources to orchestrate a stellar celebration of school lunches.

Leaf it to Spinach because Spinach is Spinach to Win It!

October is Farm to School Month, and schools statewide are celebrating all things spinach leading up to and through October. “Spinach to Win It” is a celebration coordinated by Georgia Organics to get kids eating, growing, and participating in spinach themed activities.

Member Services Committee Chair

Greetings, GSNA!

I hope everyone has started this school year with a renewed spirit and a refreshed mind. Please allow me to introduce myself as your highly motivated and super excited GSNA Member Services Committee Chair appointed by our outstanding, phenomenal and forward thinking President, Ms. Alyssia Wright. What an honor to be tasked with sharing all the amazing reasons to be a GSNA member and evoking a resounding ripple effect reaching those School Nutrition professionals that haven’t had the opportunity to join our dynamic and supportive association.

My goals for GSNA membership this year are to understand the challenges and obstacles School Nutrition professionals face in becoming members and in starting a local chapter and to partner with those individuals and districts in developing a strategic plan to find the most effective way to be a part of an organization that is designed to guide, inspire and motivate anyone in our profession to attain his or her leadership and personal goals. The theme for GSNA this year is “Marching to the Heartbeat of our Mission” which certainly captures the essence of who we are as School Nutrition. We are the center of every school district, and we are the ones that consistently expose our hearts every school day as we prepare healthy and nutritious foods to fuel our future leaders for learning. It is time to bring back the pep in our step and march in unison towards the mission of feeding children and towards fulfilling our own hearts with a passion for what we do. This passion can be derived from surrounding ourselves with professionals from an association that cultivates future effective leaders, an association that provides training courses to give us the tools to be the best at our jobs, and an association that is empathetic to our struggles and fights for change that will not only benefit us as School Nutrition professionals but also changes that will benefit all those we serve. I look forward to connecting with you throughout the year and enjoying all of the incredible GSNA events ahead. Let’s embrace a strong heartbeat for an abundantly rewarding mission!

Stainless Steel: Cleaning & Care

Mark McGrath & Anna Dilcher

Stainless steels are a combination of metals, typically, iron, chromium, and nickel. The addition of chromium to iron creates an invisible passive film that helps deter corrosion. There are over 20 types of stainless-steel differing in the combination of metals and the percentage make up of those metals. In food service applications 300 series (304 and 316) are the most common with 316 having the most corrosion resistance.

In some applications 400 series products are used. The 400 series contains smaller amounts of chromium, has less corrosion resistance, and is magnetic. The 300 series is non magnetic. The 400 series should be limited to equipment or parts of equipment that do not regularly come in contact with food or water.

While stainless steel is rust resistant due to the passive film that is created by the combination of iron, chromium, and nickel, the film can be damaged allowing corrosion to occur. The physical properties of the passive film can be damaged through mechanical abrasion and chemical deposits.

Mechanical abrasion is the scratching or rubbing away of a surface. In a kitchen this can be with another metal object, metal scouring pads, or hard plastic scouring pads. Soft cloths or soft

plastic scouring pads are not as harsh and will not break the passive film. Stainless steel may have visible polish lines. If you can see lines or a “grain” in the stainless, scrub in a parallel motion with these lines.

Chloride and water deposits can damage the passive film on stainless steel. Chlorides are found and many cleaning products and are also used in water treatment plants to purify public water. If chlorinated cleaners are used, equipment should be rinsed and dried immediately. Non-chloride containing cleaners are recommended. Water should never be left standing on equipment for extended periods of time.

It is highly recommended for equipment that comes in contact with foods high in acid, contain molybdenum that is typically found in 316 series. The addition of molybdenum adds higher corrosion resistance that protects the stainless steel from acids in food such as tomatoes and citrus fruit.

Industry Advisory Board Chair

Welcome back to a new year with GSNA!

I could not be more excited for our IAB Board to be Marching to the Heartbeat of our Mission more with President Alyssia Wright this year. Since June, your IAB Board and GSNA leaders have identified growth opportunities and witnessed a community ready to embrace it. Each GSNA event that has already been shows increasing attendance, growing membership and future leaders stepping up ready to serve.

Your current board is bringing their passion, intellect, insight, experience, and resources to the table. Together with the Executive Board we are taking in depth looks at what works and reimagining everything that can be tweaked to be more relevant for the greatest good of our school nutrition and industry community. We are committed to all live, interactive events that will work to create memorable experiences. To accomplish this task in the most genuine way we are informally reaching across and down the aisle to industry partners old and new to ask, how are you doing? We are talking about Industry Seminar, a variety of formats for our networking events and the revival of the much needed Industry Speakers Bureau.

Our commitment: we want to hear from you to ensure we have the pulse of industry, we will be asking you how we can grow our community together. Industry wants you to BE KNOWN, BE COLLABORATIVE and be willing to try new things. It is through these efforts that we can accelerate not only our own personal growth but that of our school nutrition community.

Old truth: Relationships matter. New truth: Relationships are everything. GSNA has always had a family mentality. Where pre-COVID thoughts may have been relationships mattered, today we know relationships are everything. Please join us as we march to the Heart of the Mission as we aim to establish new standards for the advancement of our mission at GSNA. We aim to keep Georgia in a leader position with our association giving school nutrition and industry more compelling reasons to lean in together.

Let’s make it our goal to continue to build new relationships and strengthen existing relationships. If anyone is interested in knowing more about how the IAB works, you are interested in serving and not sure how to get involved, please give me a call or send me an email.

I am honored and thankful to have been given the opportunity to serve as your 2022-23 GSNA Industry Advisory Board Chair. I am ready to hear from you BE KNOWN!

GSNA Legislative Advocacy

The Georgia School Nutrition Program provides fuel for a successful Georgia by offering healthy and accessible food to its students, by procuring locally sourced foods to support Georgia’s economy and offering a workforce to residents across the state. It is critical these elements are not significantly and continuously impacted.

Let your voice be heard! Get involved with advocacy adventures throughout the state. Resources and ways to get involved are available online.

Public Policy & Legislation Chair

Laura Lynn

Are you looking for a great reason to be a member of GSNA? ADVOCACY is that reason! No other organization fights for you and is the voice of our children then GSNA. This year, we will be bringing back our face to face GSNA LAC in Decatur, as well as being able to have time in the Rotunda of the Capitol on our day of visits. There, we will be able to share about our concerns but also show our commitment to GA Grown in our cafeterias! The PPL Committee met in September and begin planning for this conference and mapping out the GSNA Position Paper with talking points. We want this conference to be a great learning experience for new members and a rejuvenation of those who have been to the capitol many times.

As a citizen, you have the most powerful tool: your vote and your voice. Without hearing from you, your legislator does not know what is important to you as a school nutrition professional! Your Senators and Representatives and their staff want to hear from YOU! GSNA members can leave an impression and provide information that no one else can. Find who represents YOU and then SHARE your stories! Invite your state and local legislatures to your school. I promise, you will not regret that you do!

Making Connections Make Sense

The school newsletter had a small announcement that the cafeteria was looking for a food service worker. I wasn’t looking for a career. I’d already had a successful career selling advertising for computer and communications trade publications in New York before giving it up to have children. But now my youngest was in kindergarten and I was never one to be idle, so I applied. It would keep me busy while the kids were in school, and I’d still be around when they weren’t. When they were a little older, I’d think about picking up “real” work again.

It wasn’t long before I realized the incredibly valuable work, we were doing in the school cafeteria. Within a year I applied to be a Manager in Training and a year after that I was filling in at an elementary school for a manager who it turned out was out on leave for half of that school year. During that time Dawn (the manager I was filling in for) became my first connection. It started out with her just checking in with me and guiding me in effectively managing an elementary school. But

along the way we formed a real friendship, and she took me under her wing. After she returned from leave and I got my own school to manage, she continued to offer bits of advice that I was eager to hear and follow. The piece of advice that stands out the most was “Get involved with everything you can.” And then she encouraged me to join GSNA and go to a meeting.

August GSNA District of the Month – Cherokee County

Cherokee County kicked off the school year with a NEW best practice initiative for their staff and schools throughout the district. Cherokee County is part of District 7.

[continued from page 26] By attending our Local GSNA meetings, as well as the Manager’s Retreat and the Legislative Advocacy Conference, I made more connections and got to know other managers from our very large school district that I otherwise wouldn’t have interacted with. In the Spring our Local President-Elect asked me to run to be his President-Elect. I ran and was elected. Then I attended the Annual Conference. Wow! It was incredible to see so many other School Nutrition Professionals from all across Georgia! The educational sessions were relevant to what I was doing in my school. I got to hear how other Managers in other school districts operated. And the energy throughout was positive and infectious. Since then, I’ve continued to serve GSNA in various roles at the local, district and state levels. [continued on page 28]

27

[continued from page 27] But I’ve also made connections in my school. When I became a High School Manager, I asked my Principal if it was ok if I answered the call to volunteer at Homecoming and Prom. He gave me an enthusiastic “yes!” and it was while volunteering at these events that I made connections with various teachers, who I could later call on to let me come into their classrooms to give educational presentations. Also because of these connections I was approached by one of the Special Education specialists in our School District to pilot a program where some of our Community Based Instruction students could fulfill their work requirement in our

kitchen. This was so successful the first year that the following year it spread to most of our District’s High Schools that have CBI students.

These are a few examples of all the connections I’ve made over the years. If you haven’t gotten involved, I encourage you to. Go to Football games. Volunteer at Bingo night. Go to a GSNA meeting. I think you’ll find that it’s a great way to turn your job into your passion!
