A note for March from the Publisher February was a very short month, so that means spring is right around the corner! “For a number of years, I have been in decline. The last few especially put me into a bad headspace; kid on the way, low self-confidence, a bit of depression and lack of ambition caused me to sputter and stall. I began to lose hope, not sure that I could find a job or sustain it when I found one. Since joining MPOWER! My life has started to improve - thanks to the love and support of the facilitators. Winter isn't a season, it's a celebration The Town of Wasaga Beach hosted their annual Snowman Mania event on Family Day weekend. Friday evening at the Wasaga Sports Park featured live music by Rob Watts Band, fire dancing performances by Dragon Breath Entertainment and a spectacular fireworks display while families stayed warm by the fire. At Oakview Woods, lumberjacks were buzzing, ice sculptures were carved by hand and skaters laced up to hit the outdoor rink. Other events during the weekend were yoga and dance classes, tobogganing with the Youth Centre, snowman crafts at the library, a scavenger hunt for Saga Sam and the chili trail at local restaurants. CELEBRATING 7 YEARS IN BUSINESS!

Ted Yoannou: In Your Corner Coffee with Dad Three or four times per week, I’d get the call in the evening. “Let’s meet for coffee in the morning.” Dad was always flexible with time and location. These were his “fresh air inspector” days, when he left the house early each day, doing who knows what. Breakfast in the morning, lunch near whatever courthouse I would be in that day, coffee in the late afternoon at my parents’ home, with Mom providing a second lunch or early dinner. He was always available. “Sure, Dad, how about 7 am at your Second Cup office?” Every Tim’s, Second Cup or Starbucks was Dad’s office, but he was especially fond of the Second Cup on Avenue Road near where we lived, the one that’s no longer there, replaced by a bank several years ago. Quiet, with big tables perfect for writing in his notebooks for hours.

Darcy MacLeod, RHI, CBI, NCI, CMI WETT Certified #11142 Member of OAHI, ASHI, CRCA, NWIR, IIBEC

Thank you to all our realtors and clients for your continued support.

WE INSPECT:

“7 am is perfect. And, if you can’t sleep, come at 6 am; I’ll be there.” I’d pull in around 7 am and see Dad at his table by the window, writing furiously in his notebook, a few coffee cups already on his table. Of course, he’d always pull out his wallet to buy my coffee. “Dad, one of these days, let me buy.” “Oh, you’re a big shot now, eh?”

“So, Pops, what’s on the agenda today?” It was always best when he was in a playful or philosophical mood. Not so much fun when some family problem was gnawing at him, and he wanted me to do his dirty work. He’d go on about some issue (which really wasn’t an issue) and end up with, “you need to speak to your uncle George about this.” “Me, why me? He’s your older brother. And anyway, I don’t have any problem with the situation." Dad would briefly give me that disgusted look like he couldn’t believe I was actually his son, and then he’d change the topic to some story about what fathers would do to wayward sons in the village back in the 1930s.

It was much more enjoyable when he started the conversation with something like, “you know, if all the crooks got together, formed a union and then went on strike, you’d be out of work, and so would all the judges, prosecutors, police, court staff, everyone. All of you rely on the crooks, you should be more appreciative, say thank you to them once in a while.” What a great idea. I could just see the Crooks Union, Local 352, marching outside the Collingwood courthouse with their placards, demanding… what? No security cameras in retail stores? All car doors to be unlocked? Open vaults in banks? Sometimes I’d surprise my Dad with a great idea of my own. “What if we came up with a 100% foolproof lie detector test? Imagine that. No need for long investigations and trial proceedings. A simple, ‘did you do it?’ would resolve everything."

Dad’s eyes lit up. “Hmm, now you’re talking. Think about the possibilities.” “I know. And if we gave this technology to Mom, she would be able to find out everywhere you went and every thought you had.” Dad’s eyes drifted off as he absorbed this. “No, that’s not good. You know, the problem with you kids today is that there is too much technology. The only technology we had back in the village were those explosives we found buried in the field. Did I ever tell you about the time we accidentally set them off, and I was blinded for three weeks?” “Yup, that’s a classic. It was your great grandmother who came to the rescue, with a secret magic concoction that she put on your eyes that eventually brought your eyesight back.” What a great story. I looked at my watch, and it was 8:30 am. I think I have time for a few more. “Let me get us two more coffees; put your wallet back in your pocket; these are on me.” Submitted by: Ted C. Making good things happen in our community!

Cancer Chat “Cancer made me face my mortality and ironically taught me how to live.” Ashley Blair Doyle, designer, dreamer, and purported shower singer from Sunshine Coast BC, blogs about her diagnosis with stage 4 metastatic breast cancer. In 2012, Ashley was 28 years old and diagnosed with stage 2b breast cancer. In 2017, hoping to ‘graduate’ from the BC Cancer Agency and start a family with her husband Mike, a CT scan and bronchoscopy biopsy revealed her cancer had spread beyond the breast into her lungs and lymph nodes in her chest. Displaying characteristics of an aggressive tumour, just before her 34th birthday, Ashley’s breast cancer was confirmed to be stage 4.

relatives in Slovakia, Canada, and the US, connecting with second and third cousins informing them about the PALB2 variant frequently found in Slovak heritage. With her limited time, Ashley wants to contact as many close and distant relatives as possible to encourage them to get genetic testing so they don’t have to go through what she is going through. In 2012, facing radiation and chemo, Ashley and Mike opted for in vitro fertilization (IVF) for fertility preservation. Women can have their eggs fertilized and frozen as embryos for future use. In March 2012, prior to starting chemotherapy, Ashley and Mike were fortunate to have ten embryos cryopreserved. Despite stage 4 cancer, in 2018, with support from their families, Ashley and Mike decided they would start a family. The embryos existed, and a surrogate was found six years to the day that the embryos were created. “We thought it was meant to be.”

Without a known family history of cancer, early genetic testing was not performed to establish a potential hereditary basis for Ashley’s cancer diagnosis at such a young age. In 2016, BC Cancer Hereditary denied her request to be tested. However, in 2018, following diagnosis with metastatic breast cancer, DNA sequencing revealed a mutation in a gene called PALB2, which increased Ashley’s risk of developing breast cancer to as high as 60%. Ashley is missing a small piece of DNA in the PALB2 gene that creates what is called a loss-of-function (LOF) mutation. PALB2 LOF mutations are found in 4% of families with a history of breast cancer. PALB2, short for partner and localizer of BRCA2, colocalizes with BRCA2 functioning to repair damaged DNA and stop tumour growth. Germline mutations in PALB2 increase a person’s risk for breast, ovarian, and pancreatic cancer. PALB2 mutant breast cancers display an aggressive phenotype resembling triple-negative disease. Regarding her diagnosis, Ashley’s words are sombre. “Everything I had wanted was suddenly taken. My life completely derailed. I became severely depressed.” Ashley kept her metastatic breast cancer diagnosis private. “I didn’t want to listen to people say things like ‘you can beat this’ or ‘stay strong.’ But mostly, I couldn’t handle sharing due to the immense grief I was feeling now no longer able to have kids and lucky if ever to be 40.” In 2019, Ashley received help from Dr. Brian Shirts at the University of Washington in Seattle, a specialist in hereditary cancer risk who leads a public-health program called ‘Connect My Variant’, to establish her PALB2 mutation was inherited from her paternal grandmother from Slovakia. As a proponent of ancestral research, Ashley has coordinated with family and

During this time, Ashley found out about her germline mutation, which meant each embryo had a 50% chance of carrying the PALB2 mutation. So, it was decided that pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) testing would be performed to identify which embryos carried the high-risk cancer gene. The process required thawing all of the embryos, growing them for three days, and taking cells to sequence DNA. Unfortunately, due to inadequate cryopreservation methods used by the IVF clinic in 2012, only half of the embryos survived the thaw. Then three were left. Then one. Then, sadly the last embryo too was lost. Ashley’s words resonated with desolation. “My dream of watching Mike as a dad was gone. We lost everything. And Mike will eventually lose me, too.” In 2020, Ashley learned that the tumour had started growing again and that the cancer had metastasized to her brain. However, Ashley continues to make the best of things. She has dreams of jumping in the ocean with Mike, singing in the shower, being creative, laughing and cuddling with her loved ones. “I don’t know if I have less than six months to live, a year or whether miracles will occur. But, I hold hope for that always. There is so much uncertainty; it feels like the heaviest burden to carry. My love of over 18 years, Mike, has been my rock.” Follow Ashley facing cancer and her life with hope on Instagram @ashleyblairdoyle. BUSINESS PROFILE:

Let’s get Saucy! Saucy Pasta and Gourmet Foods began with a love of Italian cooking. Founder, Rick Gillman, evolved his passion for Italian cooking into an obsession, learning the nuances of the traditional recipes he lovingly sourced from Italy and around the globe. His love of premium and novel ingredients results in a unique fusion of traditional and modern Italian flavours.

Many varieties of sauces are available: Vegetarian, Rosé, Beef Bolognese, Chicken Breast Cacciatore, Fire Roasted Red Pepper, Roasted Red Pepper Rose, Tracy’s Arrabbiata, Puttanesca, Caper & Kalamata, and Heretic Spirits A la Vodka - as well as Alfredo and Pesto, three Vegan and eight Vegetarian options - all Gluten Free.

After beginning Saucy Pasta in 2014 and closing due to health reasons, the seed was already planted. Rick and Tracy recognized the rapidly changing restaurant landscape during the pandemic and saw an opportunity to create a new model; Saucy Artisan Pasta was born. Their first location opened in Thornbury in 2020. After selling out almost daily, Tracy and Rick decided to scale up to meet both the demand of their regular clientele and the many requests from local restaurants and stores interested in carrying their quality pasta. As a result, Saucy Artisan Pasta’s new flagship store and Pasta Factory opened in Cranberry Mews in Collingwood in the winter of 2021.

Other specialties include in-house fresh baked daily demi-baguettes and Rosemary Foccacia, made-from-scratch Tiramisu, Fresh Lobster and Ricotta Cannelloni, Jumbo Stuffed Spinach and Ricotta or Beef Stuffed Shells, Lemon Biscotti, Fresh Shaved Parmesan Reggiano, Brie/Walnut/Pear Ravioli and much, much more. Selections change daily. Hot take-out food is coming to the menu this summer. Saucy Pasta is also the exclusive regional distributor of Magiccann Pain relief topicals.

Welcome, Saucy Pasta 2.0

Saucy Pasta offers a vast array of over 30 varieties of fresh pasta shapes and flavour infusions, made fresh daily, ranging from traditional to unique and novel. They create a dozen different sauces - made from fresh milled tomatoes - not a concentrate like most restaurants use. Saucy creates handmade ravioli, cannelloni, and four varieties of lasagna, assembled daily from scratch. Rick’s penchant for premium ingredients includes using specially sourced non-GMO flour, spring water, sea salt, local free-range eggs and chicken, local pasture-raised beef, and local, seasonal produce.

Saucy’s fresh lasagna is legendary. There are eleven layers: five layers of herb and garlic-infused sheets, five layers of sauce, ricotta cheese in the middle, finished with a layer of mozzarella. Four varieties made daily: Vegetarian, Fire Roasted Red Pepper, Beef Bolognese, and Chicken Breast Cacciatore. Fresh, frozen, and gluten-free are available. If you prefer to make your own lasagna, fresh lasagna sheets are available.

How the ReStore Builds Homes

Tips to reduce food waste at home Did you know that March is Nutrition Month in Canada? All month long, registered dietitians will share key "ingredients" to upgrade our food systems for a healthier tomorrow. One important step toward sustainability is to reduce food waste in our homes. Tossing edible food is a bigger problem than many realize, as nearly one-third of food produced ends up in landfills, contributing to climate change. The good news is that there are simple steps that you can take right now that will positively impact future generations, reduce food waste and save you money, too.

Top Tips to Reduce Food Waste:

Donors

Volunteers

give furniture, appliances, building materials & more!

give their time & talents to help run the store

Shoppers find great stuff & awesome deals for a good cause

Buy only what you need. When possible, plan your meals in advance, make a shopping list and stick to it. Try to avoid impulsive buys and limit buying in bulk. Not only will you be less wasteful, but you will also save on your grocery bill.

Saves

Raises Funds

thousands of tons of material from landfills

$

To build strength, stability and self-reliance through shelter

Be more accepting of imperfect produce. Often bruised or misshapen fruits and vegetables are tossed when they could be used in smoothies, baked goods and casseroles. Most groceries stores will sell these items at a discount, saving you money.

WE ARE BREAKING GROUND ON OUR 2022 BUILD IN STAYNER SOON – LET US KNOW HOW YOU CAN BE INVOLVED!

Store food wisely. Buy perishables at the end of your grocery shop and put them in the fridge or freezer as soon as you get home to prevent spoilage. Use air-tight containers to keep food fresh. Get in the habit of rotating older goods to the front of your cupboards - this is the "First In First Out" rule. Also, keep an eye on expiry dates and use up food before it has to be thrown out. Love your leftovers. Leftovers can be frozen for future meals or used as an ingredient in another recipe. A classic example of this is to use leftover rotisserie chicken and bones to make chicken soup. Donate or share excess food. It's a good thing to donate what you don't need or use to your local food bank. Also, sharing your food surplus with neighbours and friends is a great way to reduce what ends up getting thrown out. Try your hand at pickling, fermenting, drying and canning. These methods of food preservation have been around for thousands of years because they work to reduce food spoilage. If you're ready to try preserving, there is a wealth of information on the internet and in cookbooks.

Shop local. Buying from our local food producers and small businesses is good for our community and a great way to know where your food comes from. It also helps fight pollution and reduces your carbon footprint. Bottom line. Even the little changes you make to reduce food waste can make a big difference for our planet and your wallet.

HOME PROPERTY GUIDE

THESE LOCAL BUSINESSES CAN HELP YOU WITH YOUR NEEDS INSIDE & OUT!

How to determine if it's time to downsize Three key factors to consider to make the decision Individuals work hard to save enough money to purchase their homes. And the hard work doesn’t end there. Once homeowners settle into a new home, they may set their sights on renovations that suit their individual needs. And, even when buyers find a home that needs no such work, maintenance requires homeowners’ utmost attention.

smaller home or even an apartment or condominium. Lower property taxes, reduced insurance premiums and the need to pay for fewer repairs are just some of the ways downsizing can save seniors money. Space Many people love the extra space that single-family homes provide. But seniors can take a walk through their homes and see how many rooms they still use consistently. If much of the home is unused, seniors can probably downsize without adversely affecting their daily lives.

All that hard work is perhaps one reason seniors may be a little reluctant to downsize as they advance through their golden years. In addition to the sweat equity homeowners put into their homes, all the memories they’ve made within their walls can make it harder to put a home on the market. Downsizing is a difficult decision that’s unique to each homeowner. Seniors who aren’t quite sure if downsizing is right for them can consider three key factors to make a decision that’s in their best interests. Cost Perhaps no variable affects senior homeowners’ decisions to downsize their homes as much as cost. No one wants to outlive their money, and downsizing to a smaller home can help seniors reduce their monthly expenses by a significant margin. Even homeowners who have long since paid off their mortgages can save substantial amounts of money by downsizing to a

Market The real estate market is another factor to consider when deciding if the time is right to downsize. A seller’s market can help seniors get the most significant return on their real estate investment, potentially helping them make up for meagre retirement savings. For example, home prices skyrocketed across the country during the COVID-19 pandemic, making that an excellent time for sellers to put their homes on the market. Seniors selling to downsize may capitalize on such spikes since they won’t be looking to turn around and buy larger, equally expensive homes once they sell their current place. On the other hand, if the market is down and seniors can withstand the work and cost a little longer, it may be best to wait until things bounce back in sellers’ favour.

Popular kitchen flooring materials Kitchens have long been considered the most popular gathering spaces in a home. That popularity compels millions of homeowners to renovate their kitchens each year, and the return on those investments is often significant. A number of variables, including the value of neighbouring homes and how quickly homeowners sell their homes after a renovation, affect the return on investment with a given project. When renovating kitchens, homeowners will have to consider various components within the room, including the floors. Average flooring costs can be hard to calculate because they depend so heavily on homeowners’ choice of materials. However, homeowners can consider the following popular flooring materials as they plan to renovate their kitchens. Vinyl Vinyl flooring is popular, thanks in large part to its cost. Vinyl flooring installation is much less costly than other types of flooring. But, its budget-friendliness is not the only benefit of vinyl flooring. It is easy to clean, making it an ideal choice for families that routinely confront spills and stains. In addition, vinyl is the best waterproof material among all kitchen floors.

Porcelain/Ceramic Tile The average cost to install porcelain or ceramic tile flooring is typically less than installing stone or wood flooring. Porcelain or ceramic tiles can be slippery when they get wet, but some porcelain flooring tiles have been certified as slip-resistant.

Hardwood It’s hard to beat hardwood when it comes to aesthetic appeal. Hardwood can be especially suitable in homes with open-concept floor plans that already have hardwood floors in surrounding rooms. However, hardwood flooring installation can be costly, making it a less realistic option for budget-conscious homeowners. Engineered wood planks may be something to consider in the kitchen, as these are designed to be less susceptible to humidity and temperature. That’s an essential component to consider in the kitchen, where temperatures can fluctuate while meals are being prepared. Stone

Low-cost ways to revamp living areas Home improvement projects require a substantial financial investment. But just because a homeowner wants to bring a fresh look indoors doesn’t mean they have to break the bank along the way. Living rooms are some of the most frequently used spaces in a home, and they can use an update from time to time to stay on trend or make the area more functional for a changing family dynamic. Here are some budgetfriendly ideas for breathing new life into living room designs. Establish the budget Homeowners should determine how many dollars they can designate to a living room makeover before purchasing supplies or hiring out the work. Next, figure out the scope of the remodel, visit stores or suppliers to price out materials, get estimates from contractors, and then plan for some unforeseen circumstances along the way to determine if this type of renovation is affordable. If not, scale things back until the project more closely aligns with your budget.

Change the paint colour Lighter and brighter colours are on-trend. A can or two of paint can do wonders for updating a space without a significant financial commitment. Pair that new paint colour with new window coverings and complimentary throw pillows to pull the theme together with minimal expense.

Opening Tuesday May 3rd

Update the flooring It may be the time to replace tired, outdated carpeting or other floorings. While solid hardwood flooring may be preferable, there are many types of laminate flooring that mimic the looks of popular wood colours and styles for a fraction of the cost. Laminate flooring also may be a potential DIY job for a skilled homeowner, saving even more money.

Introduce a fireplace Fireplaces were once hot commodities, but that popularity waned in the 1970s and 1980s. However, homeowners with chimneys may discover a fireplace was boarded over, and the bare bones still exist that can be renovated to bring back character. There also are ventless freestanding units that are quite affordable that mimic the look of a built-in fireplace.

Reupholster instead of replacing furniture There’s no need to throw away quality furniture if the fabric is the only thing impeding design. New upholstery or even a slipcover can update designs. Conquer clutter Rather than adding something to the living room, remove clutter to give the room a more airy feel. This can instantly change the look of the room. For example, use cord covers to tame plugs for electronics and remove unnecessary furniture from the room.

Why is my house so dusty, and what can I do? Spring is a season of rebirth and renewal. As trees and flowers bloom anew, many people get renewed vigour to tackle projects in and around the house. Spring cleaning projects can take on many forms, from garage overhauls to washing the interiors and exteriors of windows. Dust is a formidable foe during spring cleaning projects. Dust is unsightly, and dust mites can trigger allergic reactions. But many homeowners lament that, once they dust, dust returns in a flash. Dust may seem like a neverending nuisance, but there are some ways to mitigate dust for more than just a few hours. Dry dusting can simply spread dust around. Instead, use a wet cloth to catch dust and remove it. Invest in a better vacuum cleaner: Vacuuming carpets can release and resuspend dust and allergens trapped in carpeting and throw rugs. Traditional vacuums may toss that dust into the air rather than remove it. However, vacuums with HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filters can catch particles at .3 microns in size or larger at an efficiency rating of 99.97 percent. Another solution is to switch to hard-surface flooring, which is less likely to trap dust. Change the AC unit filter: HVAC filters are meant to trap particles that flow through the air and the heating and cooling system. Inadequate or dirty filters cannot do that job as thoroughly as new filters. Check the filters in both window and whole-house AC or heating units and replace them according to

HOME PROPERTY GUIDE

the recommended schedule. Consider filters with a higher MERV rating, which can catch smaller particles. Use less cloth and linen: Textiles trap more dust, particularly synthetic fabrics. Replacing items around the house with leather or wooden furniture may alleviate some dust problems. Take off shoes: Dirt and debris from outside can contribute to dust in the house. Remove shoes when entering the house to reduce the accumulation of dust. Keep pets brushed and groomed: Pets bring many positive things to a home, but pet dander can be part of the dust problem no matter how short their coats are. Washing and grooming pets regularly may put a dent in the dust situation. In addition to these suggestions, getting a whole-house filtration system, increasing wet dusting and checking for leaky ducts that can be sucking dust from attics, basements or garages are some other ways to reduce dust in a home.

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS 950 River Road West, Wasaga Beach (705) 429-2517 • www.wasagadist.ca Your Local Electricity Distribution Provider

THUNDERSTORMS: WHAT TO DO BEFORE, DURING & AFTER Thunderstorms typically happen in spring, summer and fall months, particularly in areas with high humidity, but can strike anywhere. Thunderstorms can move very quickly and can cause severe damage and prolonged power outages. They often include high winds, lightning, heavy rain, hail, and even tornadoes. Thunderstorms usually last less than an hour, but they sometimes roll in as a series of storms, which can last hours. As air becomes charged with electricity during a storm, this creates lightning bolts, which travel at 40,000 kilometres per second. High winds can blow branches and other debris into busy roads or knock large objects off high balconies and buildings. Heavy rains can cause poor visibility and flash flooding, creating hazardous driving conditions. The best way to protect yourself and your family in case of a thunderstorm is to follow these steps: • Move to a safe place, away from windows and doors.

Specialty cleaners of rugs and upholstery

• Turn around, don’t drown – avoid flood waters. • Prepare for secondary risks such as flooding, power outages, landslides and damaged buildings.

705-444-4737 wiley1@rogers.com

BEFORE • The key to staying safe is to prepare and to have an emergency plan in place. • Listen to local news and weather reports for information on changing weather conditions. • Find out if you live in an area where thunderstorms commonly occur. • Pay attention to weather warnings. Thunderstorms are tracked before they occur. Visit Environment Canada (www.weather.gc.ca) for up to date information on thunderstorm conditions, storm maps and weather warnings. • There are two types of alerts to listen for when a thunderstorm is forming in your area: o Severe thunderstorm warning: Developed storm is producing some or all of watch conditions. Tornadoes may also be produced in severe thunderstorm environment. o Severe thunderstorm watch: Favourable conditions for severe thunderstorms with large hail, heavy rain, intense lightning or damaging winds. • Make a personalized preparedness emergency kit. Families should be prepared to be selfsustaining for at least three days. • Kits should include practical items such as drinking water, food, cash, and a portable radio. However, they should also include items that are unique to your own families’ needs. This could include baby items, medical prescriptions, pet food, etc. • If you have already dipped into your emergency kit and food supply while staying at home, safely getting the supplies to replenish it following your local public health authorities’ guidelines for leaving your residence. • During the COVID-19 pandemic also add hygiene items such as hand sanitizer and non-medical masks to your kit to keep your family safe during an evacuation. • Keep trees and shrubs trimmed to make them more wind resistant, and remove any damaged branches. • Power outages can occur during thunderstorms. Be prepared for one.

GEORGIAN LIFE • MARCH 2022

ARE YOU READY? DURING • When thunder roars, go indoors! During a thunderstorm, immediately seek shelter or a safe place to wait out the storm. Watch for signs of a storm, like darkening skies, lightning flashes or increasing wind. • Postpone outdoor activities if thunderstorms are likely to occur. Many people struck by lightning are not in the area where rain is occurring. • If you count less than 30 seconds between lightning and thunder, seek shelter immediately. If you are inside: • Avoid using electrical equipment and telephones. Use battery operated devices instead, like flashlights. • Close outside doors and windows and keep away from windows. • Stay inside for 30 minutes after the last thunder. • Do not take a bath, shower or use plumbing. If you are outside: • Avoid sheltering under trees, posts, fences, equipment as they attract lightning. • Get out of open fields: If you are caught in an open field, do not lay flat on the ground. Seek shelter in a vehicle if at all possible. If you cannot seek shelter, kneel on the ground with your feet together, your hands on your knees and your body bent forward. • Stay away from water: Water is an excellent conductor of electricity. If you are in a boat, get to land as quickly as possible, and avoid swimming. Be careful around creeks and rivers that may be subject to flash flooding during a severe storm.

If you are in your car: • If you’re driving, find a safe place to pull over and park. AFTER • If someone is struck by lightning, immediately call for medical assistance and if trained in first aid, administer first aid treatment.

Youth in Collingwood are up to some very good things In the past few months Georgian Life has had the pleasure of working together with the Collingwood Youth Centre to develop two new logos for the Youth Council and Project Butterly. The Collingwood Youth Centre (CYC) was built as a safe and welcome place for youth grade 7 to age 18 to meet in a safe, supportive, and fun environment. It is co-managed by The Environment Network and Elephant Thoughts with the CYC Youth Council funded by Ontario Trillium and The Town of Collingwood Parks/Rec Grant. At the CYC offers all kinds of cool things - including a technology centre, a recording studio, a culinary kitchen, video games, and tonnes more! The CYC is a drop-in centre where you can hang out, meet new people, have fun, learn new skills, find information and get help. Like most youth centres, there is always informal drop-in time but they also offer very cool programs for students to further pursue their passions.

PROJECT BUTTERFLY Project Butterfly is a food security initiative spearheaded by The Collingwood Youth Centre, The Environment Network and Elephant Thoughts. Over the course of the next year the project will have many different programs that will include food drives, expansion of community gardens, virtual and in person cooking programs, as well as a planned community fridge and pantry with all contents free to the public. We believe that food security is the bedrock of a strong Collingwood community and just like a butterfly, it can bring transformation and change. Leading up to Christmas over 50 boxes of food were distributed to aid organizations such as The Collingwood Library Pantry and Vincent de Paul Emergency Food Bank. Please continue to donate to the beautiful food box outside the CYC at 76 First St in Collingwood. YOUTH COUNCIL While the pandemic has still kept some people feeling isolated, the CYC Youth Council decided to take action and create a loving Valentine's day for our community. They prepared 120 gift bags filled with cards and stickers (designed by youth at the CYC), chocolate, and small goodies for clients at E3 Community Living, Chartwell Retirement Residence, Home Horizons, My Friends House and Hospice Georgian Triangle. These gifts were incredibly well received and is just another example of the positive impact youth can have when inspired and given the chance to help.

The first things that come to mind when many people ponder vehicle maintenance are oil changes and routine tune-ups. Though each of those things are vital components of automotive maintenance, it's important that drivers recognize the value of a thorough car wash as well. Drivers may see a car wash as a way to make their car look good, and that's not untrue. An effective car wash can give a car a look that mirrors how the vehicle appeared the moment it was driven off the lot. But an effective wash is more than just cosmetic. A thorough car wash removes grit and residue, thus protecting the car's paint job and reducing the likelihood of corrosion. Though late-model vehicles aren't as susceptible to rust, fading and peeling as cars made decades ago, they still need a thorough and routine wash to remove dirt, grime and bird droppings that, over time, can adversely affect the paint job and, if left unchecked, eat away at the metal. Another benefit to routine car washes is preventing damage related to seasonal issues. For example, we live in a region where snowfall is common and drive on roads that have been salted. Deicing the roads makes driving safer, but salt can accumulate on the undercarriage of the vehicle and contribute to corrosion. Winter may not be a time many drivers visit the car wash, but it's important to do so after the snow has melted and salt on the roadways has been washed away by rain. Most car washes now offer highpressure undercarriage treatments that can wash off the salt and prevent corrosion and the formation of rust. But, it's not just the car's exterior that can benefit from routine washing. When taking their cars to get washed, many motorists pay a little extra to have their vehicle interiors cleaned. Sometimes, referred to as "interior detailing," cleaning the car's cabin helps maintain the interior, so it looks new longer. Routine interior cleaning also can remove dust and other particles that can serve as irritants if allowed to build up over time. Resale and trade-in value is another factor to consider. Microchip issues that have compromised auto manufacturers' ability to produce new automobiles have led many motorists to the preowned vehicle market. By taking care of a vehicle's interior, drivers are putting themselves in a position to capitalize on the increased reliance on the preowned market. Whether they're private citizens or dealerships, prospective buyers will see more value in a vehicle with a well-maintained interior than one with a cabin that's seen much better days. Car washes may be seen as a purely cosmetic form of vehicle maintenance. But the benefits of routine and thorough car washes extend far beyond aesthetic appeal.

1 PS17629_Speedy_AD_Collingwood_3.65x5po Vehicle engines include complex parts that work in concert to ensure that the car functions properly. However, when servicing their cars and trucks, CB/CB mars 10, 2020 9:14 AM look to many engine vehicle owners may parts yet overlook a relatively mundane, albeit important, component: the air filter. PS17629

All cars come equipped with air filters, which are essential to optimum engine operation. The engine air filter is the first line of defence against outside air brought into the car engine to be burned along with fuel to produce combustion. The filter will capture particulate matter that would normally enter a vehicle’s engine and leave sediment. Dirty air can reduce engine efficiency and cause damage over time. Dirty air can compromise the air/fuel mixture that is involved in combustion. Any debris that enters portals in fuel injection systems can compromise that system. In addition, debris can cause fuel to burn less efficiently, resulting in poor fuel economy.

There is no simple answer as to how often an engine air filter should be changed - it largely depends on miles driven and the environment in which the vehicle is used. Those who reside in rural or dusty areas will need to replace air filters more frequently. Drivers also can install air filters more suited to dusty areas. An engine filter is not the only filter in a vehicle. There also is a cabin air filter. The cabin air filter does not affect engine performance, but it does help to provide clean air inside the vehicle. The cabin air filter helps to keep dirt, pollen, bacteria, exhaust gases, and dust from entering the HVAC system. It can also be a barrier against bugs, leaves, and other particles clogging up the system. The cabin filter also helps to keep the air fresh and odour-free. A clogged filter can result in diminished heating and air conditioning performance, so it’s essential to change this filter as well.

The gift of giving The 2021 Tree of Life Campaign hit its goal! South Georgian Bay, you showed your AMAZING support once again with generous donations that came in via phone, mail and online during the months of November and December. We are proud to say that because of you, all the Automated Medication Dispensing Units will be replaced across Collingwood General & Marine Hospital (CGMH). Thank you for helping our healthcare team continue to safely deliver medication to their patients. Our CGMH Pharmacy Team is just as excited as we are and wanted to share their thanks. While we couldn't capture the whole team, they are all there in spirit. Source: www.facebook.com/CGMHF At Worsley Elementary School in Wasaga Beach, each year, Shannon Venus asks her students to donate to the Georgian Triangle Humane Society (GTHS) in lieu of holiday gifts. Every year, her class surprises her with the amount of money they have raised. At the end of 2021, these amazing students gave her quite a surprise. Her students had started collecting funds since October 2021! All the students kept this a secret without anyone letting it slip. They surprised her with a nice card and a cheque during a math lesson. Shannon’s students mean so much to her as she is a big animal lover and supporter of the GTHS. To Shannon and her wonderful students, the GTHS team says thank you! Source: GTHS The Bark & Purr newsletter

The Collingwood Cinema Club has been entertaining the people of South Georgian Bay for over 20 years and through their work as a not-for-profit organization, they have also been supporting various local charities. Thousands of people have enjoyed their unique film presentations every month. Like many organizations, the Cinema Club was required to take its program virtual over the past year. Despite not being able to gather to enjoy their highly acclaimed movies in person, members of the Cinema Club helped to raise $5,000 for Collingwood G&M Hospital Foundation. The donation, presented by members of the Club’s Board of Directors will help to purchase new patient beds, providing comfort and improved care to members of the South Georgian Bay Community. OUR FOCUS ON COMMUNITY In our previous articles in this series, we have talked about the auto service division of the business with a focus on the things we value as a locallyowned business operating in one of the best communities in Ontario. We try hard to operate both the retail and the auto service sides of our store with the same core values of honesty, respect, fairness and integrity. Undoubtedly, this has been more challenging over the past couple of years with frequently changing business operating rules and supply chain issues brought on by a virus. But, with the support and patience of our customers and the heroic persistence of our staff, we have survived with our core values not only intact but strengthened. For the most part, our customers are supportive and understand that we are the last link in a supply chain that seems to have a few missing links in the middle somewhere.

10 % OFF PARTS AND LABOUR FOR THE MONTH OF MARCH

Even though we have a nationally recognized name on the front of our building, we are essentially a local small business that is very much a part of the community. Our staff lives, works, and plays right here in Wasaga Beach, Stayner, New Lowell, Tiny, Borden, Collingwood, and everywhere in between and are not only here to serve you at the store but here to support the community we call home. To say that I am proud of what our team has accomplished over the past two years would be a vast understatement. They have risked their own safety to serve our customers. As the unpredictable threat waxed and waned over the seasons, they continued to provide service to the community with honesty, respect, fairness and integrity, and a little compassion when needed. Their personal contributions at work and in the community are an inspiration. I could not be more proud of their dedication to the community and our clients. Our customers make me proud too. You would be amazed at the number of times over the past years that both groups and individuals have come forward to help members of our society. From holiday toy drives, to food banks all year round, to protecting our most vulnerable during a pandemic, to good Samaritans wanting to help out a family or a homeless person, the flow of compassion never stops, and we are happy as contributing members of society to help in any way we can. How fortunate we are to live in a caring community. Sure, we don’t agree on everything, nor should we, but from my vantage point of operating a business that interfaces with thousands of our citizens every year, I can say without a doubt that we care about each other. We support and assist each other. We are, in every sense of the word, a great community. It makes me proud to be here. SUBMITTED BY: KENN VOSS – OWNER OPERATOR

Craigleith Heritage Depot - where history and tourism come together If you're looking to learn more about our area and its history, the Craigleith Heritage Depot is the perfect place to start. Now a branch of The Blue Mountains Public Library (BMPL), the 1880s train station on the shores of Georgian Bay has been used as a station and station master's home, cottage, restaurant, and museum. The Craigleith Heritage Depot was built in 1880 as a railway station for mail, freight and passengers. In the 1880s, there were two trains a day between Collingwood and Meaford. This allowed a return visit to Collingwood possible the same day, even the same evening. In addition, this daily schedule allowed Craigleith children attending high school in Collingwood to no longer board in town - they now could commute. In 1881, there were six trains a day at the Craigleith Station - this made the transport of goods and people between communities easier. The station building was constructed with local timber and the most modern features in railway design, including the round turret. The turret's design has a utilitarian function rather than a cosmetic one. The turret provided shelter to train users and an indoor view of the track in both directions for the station master and travellers. The turret gracefully rises above nearby trees, acting as a landmark for approaching trains; now, it serves as a welcoming structure to the Town of the Blue Mountains. It remains the most prominent feature of the station today. The other rooms in the station were reserved for the station master and his family to reside. 1882 saw the sale of the Craigleith Station land to the Grand Trunk Railway. The Grand Trunk Railway would eventually be amalgamated into the Canadian National Railway in 1923. Several Grand Trunk rail items can be found in the Craigleith Heritage Depot today.

By the 1940s, skiers could embark on a 7:00 a.m. train from Union Station in Toronto to Craigleith Station, then pay 25 cents to ride in a horse-drawn sled to the ski hill, now known as Blue Mountain. However, due to the war effort and a lack of rail transit, the ski train operation was halted in 1942. After World War II, service to Craigleith Station resumed, but in the early 1960s, the CNR sold the property and discontinued passenger service. After the trains stopped rolling through, the Craigleith Station was bought by the former Collingwood Mayor. With its fantastic views of Georgian Bay, he planned to use the station as a cottage. After the train station had been abandoned for years, in 1967, Kenn and Suyrea Knapman bought the station and converted it into a restaurant and museum. A few additions and changes were made to the building to make it suitable for dining without taking away from the 19th-century railway architecture. The Depot Fine Dining Restaurant opened in October 1968. Classes of students would come by the restaurant to check out the local history that Kenn collected. This was the beginning of a long track of great meals and memories.

In the late 1980s, the track was taken up and now serves as a walking, cycling, skiing and snowshoe trail known as the Georgian Trail. With community support and fundraising, the restaurant was purchased from Suryrea Knapman and transferred to the Town of The Blue Mountains. From 2008 to 2016, the Craigleith Heritage Depot operated as a museum and was managed by the Town of the Blue Mountains. In February 2022, the Country Music Association of Ontario (CMAOntario) put the spotlight on Forrest Jones Entertainment. Below is the (condensed) interview conducted and published in their newsletter.

Tell us about you/your organization and your/its role within Ontario’s Country Music industry. Originally Countryfest Productions (CFP) until the end of 2021, now Forrest Jones Entertainment (FJE) hopes to bring to the table unique and original events along with traditional shows to the Ontario marketplace. Of course the pandemic has hit hard in trying to organize anything over the last two years, however we were successful at hosting one of the few outdoor, (non-vehicle) festival's at Blue Mountain in September 2021 with headliner Jason McCoy of the Road Hammers, and a host of other incredible bands including David Boyd Janes, Kansas Stone, Elyse Saunders, Dustin Bird, John Anderson and More. Through CFP we sponsored the 2021 CMAOntario Awards, Female Artist of the Year Award, won by Meghan Patrick, and we organized and produced a number of shows in the Simcoe County Region (Barrie area). We feel like we are the Jerry McGuire of the industry, starting out small, staying humble, trying to work with as many people as we can, and mostly with local Canadian talent. There is no vision to be like the conglomerate Live Nation, our industry's super-power; instead, we will go along creating smaller shows, with great people and continue to build lasting relationships and continue to try to always raise money for charity, through awareness and financial aid - with partnerships to foster our growing brand and identity. Herein lies the reason to become Forrest Jones Entertainment. We want to stand for paying our performing artists as much as we can, having them want to perform at our shows and to treat them with respect all along the way. We want them to then create an incredible show experience for the fans so it becomes win-win for everyone. Our company, like my name will stand for a level of quality you would want affiliated with your name. Forrest Jones Entertainment is born. Why did you join CMAOntario? Originally to support the 2021 CMAOntario Awards, but also to become a bit more recognized; so people could relate our company with good quality (smaller performances and shows), a bit more close and personal versus stadium shows and those at the bigger venues where you can sometimes barely tell who is on stage. We created "Up Close & Personal - The Series"; and had an incredible turn-out featuring Aaron Allen, Suzi Kory and David Boyd Janes. It was met with a packed house, emotional, fun & inspirational. The series would be continuing now if it weren't for the pandemic, but once we get cleared up - we will start again. Up next was Beverley Mahood, Elyse Saunders and John Anderson. What’s your favourite thing about CMAOntario and why? Purely, since it's just Ontario. Of course, like any person and company we want to support our local entertainers, especially now when times are the toughest; and the road is a little broken. We are continuing to plan for events all through the year, and just push dates out - but the key will be when the population of event go-ers start buying again. We can create events - but we need people to attend and support them. I'd like to suggest that if buying a pair of tickets to an event is within your means, do so - and maybe even donate the tickets to a local charity. They can in turn raffle them off, give to a volunteer - all kinds of things. It puts sales on the ledger, and people in the seats - we need people to support the entertainment industry as strong as ever moving into the spring of 2022. What are you working on right now? Forrest Jones Entertainment has a host of tribute style shows all across Canada planned for 2022; a half dozen more "Up Close & Personal" Shows to plan, likely starting in fall now, and we are hopeful to have a big event in early fall, the last weekend of September - we are planning it - whether it happens will remain to be seen, but we are trying, that's for sure. And of course, we will be back to support and sponsor the CMAOntario Awards again this year!

Ready for a night you’ll never forget? Forrest Jones Entertainment promises you a great time full of live musical entertainment. CATCH A SHOW! forrestjonesentertainment.com
