ASSISTANT COACH

CHELSEA NEWTON It did not take long for Newton to have an impact on the Lady Bulldog basketball program. In her first season on head coach Joni Taylor’s staff, she played a crucial role in leading her team back to the NCAA Tournament, as Georgia finished with a 21-10 overall record and 9-7 league mark. Newton then helped lead the Lady Bulldogs to the second biggest single-season turnaround in school history as the 2017-18 team finished in second place in the SEC standings with a 26-7 overall record. She came to Athens following a successful coaching stop at Rutgers. A former Big East Defensive Player of the Year with the Scarlet Knights and assistant at her alma mater, Newton coached an impressive six WNBA players in just five seasons. She worked directly with the wings and forwards at Rutgers and was instrumental in the development of first-round pick Kahleah Copper as well as Betnijah Laney, who was selected as the No. 18 overall pick in the 2015 WNBA Draft.

Newton also helped sign the No. 1 point guard in the country, Tyler Scaife, in 2013. She then helped develop Scaife into the American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year in 201314 – the same season Rutgers won the WNIT Championship. Throughout her career, Newton has displayed a penchant for helping attract top talent. The Scarlet Knights inked classes that ranked No. 3 in the nation in each of her first two full seasons as an assistant coach, while Georgia signed the No. 9 class in the country in 2017.

Her expertise on the court comes from an equally impressive playing career. Newton was a four-year starter and was selected as the team's Most Valuable Player in both 2004 and 2005 (co-honored with Cappie Pondexter). In 2005, she was named Big East Defensive Player of the Year and was tabbed both first-team All-Met and third-team All-Big East. Newton was selected by the Sacramento Monarchs with the No. 22 overall pick in the second round of the 2005 WNBA Draft. and helped the Monarchs to the 2005 WNBA Championship.
