GeorGia TenniS: an all-ameriCan TradiTion Georgia tennis ranks among the top teams in the country in All-American selections. A total of 40 different Bulldogs have earned All-America recognition on 81 occasions since the selection process began in 1957. The first Georgia players ever to be so honored were Danny Birchmore and Norman Holmes in 1971. In 2006, three Bulldogs earned All-America honors. John Isner and Antonio Ruiz repeated as doubles selecctions, while Isner and Luis Flores earned the distinction in singles. The 2006 season also marked the 26th consecutive year that Georgia has had at least one player earn All-America accolades. Flores, Travis Helgeon, and Nate Schnugg earned honors in 2008. The 2009 season saw Schnugg and his doubles partner Jamie Hunt earn All-America status in doubles, while Schnugg was also an All-American in singles for the second time. Georgia’s legendary former tennis coach Dan Magill teamed with Dick Gould in 1979 to create the ITA AllAmerica selection standards that, along with some minor refinements, are still used today. Magill, an Athens, Ga., native, coached the Bulldogs to two team NCAA National Championships, 13 SEC Outdoor Team Championships, and eight SEC Indoor Team Championships. Georgia has had seven players earn All-America accolades in all four years of their respective collegiate careers, including Al Parker, Allen Miller, Mike Sell, Jamie Laschinger, Steven Baldas, Bo Hodge and John Isner.
