Founded in 1789 to educate leaders of a new nation, Georgetown is the oldest Catholic and Jesuit university in the United States. The McDonough Blueprint is a comprehensive map of your educational and experiential journey as a Georgetown undergraduate. Grounded in the principle of well-being, the blueprint ensures every opportunity, both inside and outside the classroom, supports your holistic development and helps you realize your full potential.

Wellness Wednesdays bring the entire undergraduate community together to focus on various aspects of wellness. Each Wednesday morning, we offer nutritious snacks alongside programming and resources designed to help everyone maintain a healthy and balanced lifestyle.

The H.O.M.E. Program is a four-year journey designed to help undergraduate students explore their unique paths toward purpose and self-actualization. Starting with an immersive overnight experience and continuing throughout the year, the program fosters reflection and dialogue through curated, small-group experiences.

Initiatives

Business Undergraduates Invested in Leadership Development (BUILD)

This pre-orientation program provides an intensive business and leadership development curriculum for incoming first-year and transfer students providing early academic instruction, mentorship activities, corporate visits, and alumni interactions.

Business Scholars Program (BSP)

BSP seeks to provide targeted support, academic resources, and co-curricular programming to promote the success of first-generation, limited-income college students who pursue business as a field of study.

The Kosoy Women in Business Initiative

This cohort-based initiative provides tactical and strategic leadership development for students to advance topics related to women in the workplace. Students meet throughout the academic year to learn from top business executives about their perspectives on gender in the workplace and beyond.

Smart Start Program

Smart Start is a signature program sponsored by PwC offering a series of workshops during the academic year that equips a diverse pool of first- and second-year students with the tools for academic, personal, and professional success.

To gain a global mindset, we believe you need to experience the world. The access you gain at Georgetown to global experiences will prepare you to understand the complexities of any field, in any organization around the world.

Opportunities range from a semester or year abroad to our customized summer study abroad programs, the Global Business Experience consulting project, and global case competitions.

GLOBAL BUSINESS EXPERIENCE 

As a leader in global business education, McDonough provides all students the opportunity to travel abroad to consult either within an industry or with specific Fortune 500 companies. Working in small teams, you will partner with executives from multinational organizations to address complex business challenges.

You will work remotely for several months before spending one week in the client’s country to present your final recommendations to the organization’s leadership.

Georgetown’s location in the nation’s capital provides unique opportunities to work and learn at the intersection of business and public policy.

SIGNATURE SUMMER GLOBAL PROGRAMS 

We offer customized summer programs to further your global experience while completing two business courses — six Georgetown credits — at well-known institutions abroad. Programs are four to five weeks long, and courses are taught by faculty from the McDonough School of Business and partner institutions.

Special Curricular Opportunities

First Year Seminars

The First Year Seminar (FYS) Program is an exciting way for first-year business students to explore the nature of scholarship, think about the relevance of business in society, and foster intellectual and personal growth while adapting to the rigor of college-level courses. As part of a small class size environment, you will develop a mentoring relationship with faculty and strengthen critical academic reading and writing skills necessary for college and career success. Seminars also include a social impact consulting project where you will work in teams to address a challenge featuring a local nonprofit.

Undergraduate Research Opportunities

• Mentored Opportunities for Research Experience (MORE): The MORE Program offers students an in-depth business research experience over the summer to support a faculty-designed research project.

• Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF): SURF provides a structured avenue for students to pursue their original research interests over the summer.

• Senior Honors Thesis: For those looking to delve deeper, the Senior Honors Thesis program allows students to conduct original research during their senior year on a topic of their choice, culminating in a comprehensive honors thesis.

The Major Societies at the McDonough School of Business are faculty and student-led organizations designed to foster growth within each business major. National and Global Case Competitions

Students compete in teams to develop business strategies that address a current business challenge facing real or theoretical organizations. Each year, teams from premier universities around the world are invited to compete in our own international case competition, the McDonough Business Strategy Challenge.

Client and Project-Based Learning

McDonough courses connect students to nonprofits, Fortune 500 firms, and governmental organizations both in Washington, D.C., and around the globe. Your experience in client and project-based work will heighten your engagement with the course’s academic themes as well as enhance your technical and professional applications of the learning.

Research Centers and Initiatives

Georgetown McDonough’s faculty-led centers and initiatives focus on the future of business, and how Hoyas will shape it. Each explores a critical field, often using an interdisciplinary approach to tackle society’s most pressing challenges. They foster thought leadership, convene industry leaders for impactful discussions, and provide experiential learning opportunities for students. Undergraduates have the opportunity to work with all of our centers and initiatives, including Business for Impact, the Psaros Center for Financial Markets and Policy, Steers Center for Global Real Estate, Baratta Center for Global Business, Georgetown Entrepreneurship and more.

In collaboration with the university’s Cawley Career Education Center, the McDonough Career Center provides customized career advice, resources, connections, and mentorship to help undergraduate and graduate students use their education for career advancement and professional growth.

Career Exploration

Career Coaching

We offer one-on-one career coaching with professional staff and Peer Career Advisors exclusively for undergraduate business students. Students meet with a coach to discuss career strategy, values assessments, mock interviews, negotiation, and everything in between.

Alumni Mentoring

Students network with recent graduates from a vast array of companies and industries and seek advice about job searching, interview skills, and career choices, as well as academics and extracurricular activities.

Experiential Education

Career Treks

Our students travel to different cities to network with alumni and recruiters so that they can learn about all the diverse industries they can pursue.

Fridays in the Field

Site visits to companies throughout the Washington, D.C., area allow students to gain exposure and make connections to a variety of industries in the region.

Winter Break Shadow Days

Our “Host a Hoya” program offers a one-day job shadow opportunity in home cities with an alumni host to experience a “day in the life” in a particular industry or company and network with successful Hoyas around the country.

Leadership Development

McDonough Student Body Government (MSBG)

MSBG represents the undergraduate student body to the administration and faculty. MSBG provides input on co-curricular activities and encourages students and faculty to cooperate in conferences, seminars, and programs designed to challenge student thought.

McDonough School of Business Student Advisory Board (MSAB)

MSAB supports business-affiliated undergraduate student organizations. Their mission is to ensure accessible opportunities for all Georgetown undergraduate students through oversight, training, funding, and guidance. MSAB helps support and promote Georgetown’s open access policy for student organizations.

Peer Ambassadors

Our Peer Ambassador and Leadership program utilizes the experiences, knowledge, and leadership skills of select upper-class students to help new students transition to McDonough. Each incoming student is matched with a McDonough peer advisor.

Service Opportunities

To advance justice and the common good, the university’s Center for Social Justice promotes and integrates community-based research, teaching, and service by collaborating with diverse partners and communities.
