A GIVEN PLACE GEORGE SCHOOL 2022–2023 REPORT OF GIFTS

ON THE COVER Generously funded by Brian Wise ’93 TR, the firepit featured on the cover was constructed this past spring. Located between Marshall Center and Main, the expanded firepit serves as a year-round gathering spot for students, faculty and staff, and alumni. Its placement is intended to create a hub connecting the academic, social, and residential lives of the school. 2

Dear Friends

The beautiful land of this campus. The buildings and classrooms. Our Scholarships. Faculty chairs. Curricular funds. All are parts of this “Given Place.” George School exists because of the generosity of you and others across decades and generations. At this moment in our world, the model of education offered at George School has never been more valuable or relevant. Building a truly global community of learners, teaching students to understand, listen to, and be shaped by the perspectives of others—helping students see the light in themselves and in one another to forge personal connections—all inspire hope for the future. This model is powerful; it is also expensive. Tuition covers only 70% of the cost of a George School education. We depend on philanthropy—our own givenness—to fulfill this mission. Our warmest thanks to all of you who chose to be active members of this given place in the past year. Your commitment serves as an important reminder to our students, faculty, and staff that they participate in something much larger than themselves. George School students continue to shine their light. Their ability to engage in deep conversations, use their voices in support of a cause they believe in, and boldly and courageously be their authentic selves, is truly inspiring. Modeling joyful learning and thoughtful risk-taking, our faculty dedicate themselves to supporting students in the process of self-discovery in and outside the classroom. I hope you’ll enjoy the poem in the following pages written by Rhianna Searle ’23, Bucks County High School Poet of the Year, along with the reflective conversation between Rhianna and Board Clerk Linda Espenshade Heinemann P’01 TR. While “Letter to the Class of 2023” was written as a gift to Rhianna’s class, it certainly resonates with all of us who are members of this given place. We are grateful for your active participation in fulfilling our mission. Your support strengthens the culture and academic quality of George School every day. Thank you. In friendship,

LETTER TO THE CLASS OF 2023 A Poem by Rhianna Searle ’23

I’ve traded successes for clementines in Collection, on Monday and Wednesday mornings. In old brick buildings, learning to peel back citrus and nuance. Among cherry blossoms and chalk dust I’ve learned to change, become bendable if not perfectly balanced, flexible instead of fixed.

LETTER TO THE CLASS OF 2023

Trees age circularly, and I’ve grown by venturing beyond the concentric circles of my fear, for freedom lies outside your comfort zone. I hold my limbs, tracing the veins of my time– Marshall to MDA and back again, the pit, Bancroft 110, the Japanese Maples on South Lawn all pulsing.

LETTER TO THE CLASS OF 2023

I’ve learned how to leave a place

The answer, I think,

(how to hold sunshine in my spine,

is bound by cultures, spaces

like a river,

created and cultivated, collectively.

how to see spring blooms as mirrors

But first, we must define our terms.

and makeshift memories

We must exit, timed, choreographed–the theater of our lives–

lifeboats)

We must again engage in inquiry,

But how do you leave people

We must ask: how will we define success

And stay tethered,

in this next act?

human, sewn ribs intact?

LETTER TO THE CLASS OF 2023

Hamlet’s dying wish: “tell my story” and indeed narrative becomes the new veins we trace. A high school map as odd as ours, dear class of 2023, means transitions that require redefinition. So when we leave this place, perhaps we should ask: how will we define success as our future grows new limbs?

LETTER TO THE CLASS OF 2023

Your own company, career? family? house? car? Or perhaps better, defining success by waking up, by doing the dishes, by making your bed. Maybe, holding the door. I wish us the success of daffodils blooming from the bulbs we plant, of smiles from biting a sweet clementine, of laughter that plays with your breath, the success of saying hello and asking how are you and really meaning it.

LETTER TO THE CLASS OF 2023

Here is how I’ve defined success: Leave something behind; take a piece of it with you. I’ve worked to leave an aura of laughter, literature in the blue carpeted room tools for change: marching in streets, counting recycling bins, in the blue world, leading and leaving spaces for others to speak.

Simplicity as Success Clerk of the Board of Trustees and former Director of the Library Linda Espenshade Heinemann P’01 TR and Bucks County High School Poet of the Year Rhianna Searle ’23 reflect on Rhianna’s poem, “Letter to the Class of 2023,” and how the idea of “success” takes many forms.

Thanks to the generosity of a donor, we were able to create an entrepreneurship bank at George School. Profitable groups contribute back to the bank so that we can support the groups who operate at a loss. This gives students the agency to build the future of the entrepreneurship program at George School.”

Increasing Access to Friends Education for More Families George School is a member of The Friends Collaborative, an organization of Quaker schools that enables donors to multiply the impact of their giving through participation in the Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program.

The EITC and OSTC programs were previously only open to corporate donors, but with the formation of organizations like The Collaborative, qualified individuals have the opportunity to receive tax credits while supporting George School. The purpose of The Collaborative is to foster the growth of Quaker Education by providing funding that makes a Quaker education accessible for more families. The Collaborative is comprised of Quaker schools across PA and the Friends Council on Education. We have grown to support students at twenty-two Friends schools across PA with over $11.6 million in financial aid. This program is crucial to George School’s financial aid program. How does this benefit you? You have the ability to direct PA state income tax liability to George School. George School will, in turn, use your gift to provide critical financial aid to students in need. You will receive a tax credit equal to 90% for a two-year contribution to The Collaborative. In addition, you may be able to claim a federal income tax deduction for a portion of the contribution. Together, these benefits make a large gift very inexpensive. Contact Chris Jackiewicz at 215.579.6572 or email advancement@georgeschool.org for more information.

Community Connections

BENEFACTOR CIRCLE

The George School community is connected—by its people, its stories, its experiences, and its traditions. Wang Ji and Wei Na P’04, ’25, ’27 have been connected to George School for the last twenty years. They were introduced to George School by an old friend of the family, their first daughter attended, they became a part of the community, and the rest is history. When reflecting on his daughters’ experiences at the school, Ji expressed his gratitude for the advisors, faculty, and staff who support his children’s education at George School. “When my daughter [Willa Wang ’25] came across some academic challenges during her sophomore and junior years, she went to her advisor,” shared Ji. “It has been a joy watching Willa grow during her time at George

School,” said Kim Major, Willa’s advisor. “She is a diligent worker who elevates the conversation in the classroom, and is in tune with her peers in ways that contribute to the life of the community in her dorm, on the swim team, and as a member of the Discipline Committee.” “Kim encouraged Willa and helped her build confidence,” said Ji, “she is always available to help Willa and provide advice.” By supporting George School, Ji and Na help provide opportunities for students to experience a George School education, live out their story, and make their mark on the community. “My family always feels warmth and care from George School,” said Ji. “We are a member of this big family, this close community.”

“ My family always feels warmth and care from George School.” WA N G J I P’04, ’25, ’27

Rooted In George School Values

Kenny King ’97 TR still remembers how nervous he was getting on the van with his mother one morning in eighth grade. As an Oliver Scholar (a program that prepares high-achieving Black and Latinx students from underserved New York City communities for success), he was invited to travel from Staten Island, NY to Newtown, PA to visit George School. Kenny had planned on attending high school close to home; boarding school was definitely not on his family’s radar. “Wow,” he thought when they pulled onto Farm Drive. “This could be an amazing experience for me.” As a George School student, Kenny cherished the opportunity to learn in a diverse and intentional community. “One of the key things I learned was how to take ownership over my own life,” he remembered. “Choosing which classes to take, learning to ask for help, challenging myself, and then understanding that, once I made a choice, I had to own the work and the grade. I also

learned what it means to be part of a community, with obligations and expectations but also a deep sense of respect for each individual.” Today, Kenny dedicates time—and resources—to George School to help to ensure the experience is available to others. “I want George School to be recognized as an educational institution that cherishes diversity and opens its arms to any person who comes to campus and offers them a chance to change their lives in a positive way,” he said. “If we can achieve that, we will leave the world a better place.” It’s a lofty goal, but one that is grounded in Kenny’s personal experience as a George School student. “I think of my life as the branches of the tree in our logo; rooted in George School, and connected to that time of my life in so many ways,” he said. “George School helped me to grow into myself and taught me to let my life speak. Of course I am compelled to give back.”

“ The idea that I could be self-directed, openminded, and freethinking came from George School.”

One Year. Lifelong Impact.

One year was all that was needed for George School to leave an indelible mark on Barbara Janney Desanzo ’68—though it would take more than twenty-five years for her to fully realize the impact that year had on her life. “The idea that I could be self-directed, open-minded, and free-thinking came from George School,” she said. Barbara attended George School for her sophomore year, ultimately graduating from Princeton High School. Decades later, she attended George School’s Centennial Celebration. Visiting campus, attending Commencement, and hearing the poignant sentiments shared at that event inspired Barbara to renew her connection with the school. “My values were certainly fostered at George School,” she said. Volunteering and giving back have been lifelong commitments for Barbara, beginning with babysitting and later by participating in the co-op program at George School. She has fond memories of helping

at the switchboard. “The co-op component gave us all an equal place within the structure of the school,” she reflected. “Everybody had a job.” In order for George School to remain “A Given Place,” the flexibility and resourcefulness of the school community must continue to be supported. For Barbara, scholarships are a critical part of this support. Generosity made it possible for Barbara to attend George School—and financial strain contributed to her being unable to finish out her studies. Committed to making a George School education a reality for families, she established the Barbara Janney Desanzo ’68 Endowed Scholarship Fund in 2019, which is awarded to students on the basis of financial need. She is also a member of the John M. George Society. What does Barbara hope for today’s George School students? “To know that they are going to make an impact on whatever community they belong to just by being there.”
