ATOM A solar power management system

PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION The initial cost of installing solar panels is high. Further expenses that can be controlled is by means of solar energy management, making it cost effective and efficient.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES Project ATOM is a start-up that began two years ago at MIT, Manipal. The goal of the project is to find a solution to create a feasible and inexpensive way of managing solar electricity in a small household. Especially in some parts of India where it is difficult to attain access to power, it is necessary that the available resources not be depleted, but rather be used efficiently. This was achieved by programmed integrated circuits.

INSPIRATION Like the branches of a tree that distributes water by transpiration naturally. Similarly creating a branched design to distribute the heat generated before removing it from the system through mixed convection.

MODELING & IMPLEMENTATION The model of the finalized sketch is developed on the computer using CATIA V6, a CAD platform.

The dimensions exported to obtain the various surfaces on a foam board by lazer cutting. Further painted using acrylics and coated with varnish to keep the surfaces water resistant and for a lasting finish.

X GRIP Size adjustable steering wheel concept

DESIGN OBJECTIVE The concept of an adjustable steering wheel to aid to the driver’s preferred grip and overall size of the wheel itself. Furthermore, to take quick turns with lesser rotation of the steering wheel.

MECHANISM TESTS & OPTIONS

The mechanism was broken down into two main steps using Solidworks.

1. The rotation of a dial and the bevel gears.

2. The rotation of the bevel pinions and translation of each arm containing screw threads.

Mock assemblies were made to determine the overall working of the system. While doing so, overcoming other problems were noticed, such as closing the gap between the three handle sections while the handles expand outward.

And trying out other concepts such as the retracting handle grips at the junctions

ASSEMBLIES

Three bevel pinions that rotate synchronously with the dial + bevel gear.

The rotation of the pinions further extends the arm with the use of a screw drive.

The dial assembly is made in such a way that the B&W display is independent from the rotation of the main dial.

There are 5 possible functions for the dial screen: Calls, Navigation, Steering wheel size indication, Media control and Time

Intra-ocular lens An implant to avoid the need for post-operative care for cataract patients

PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION Complications with post-cataract operation involve prolonged ocular inflammation. Conventional treatment method requires manual application of optical drops containing anti-inflammatory agents.

PROJECT OBJECTIVE Drawbacks of the current treatment method includes low penetration of medication through the surface of the eye, drug wash-out from tear ducts and eye toxicity due to frequent addition.

The project aims at combining a post-operative treatment along with the surgery as an implant in the eye chamber. This allows administration of a much lower dosage of drug than via manual administration by the nurse/ clinician . The drug is also made directly available at the injury site and there is no need for patient intervention during post-operative treatment.

CONCEPT The injector device is designed such that it is used for placement of the IOL as well as incorporates a chamber for temporary storage and insertion of the drug after the IOL placement. The piston first pushes the chamber with an attached elastic at the end, shaped to push the lens. Further when the chamber is restricted, the piston enters the chamber pushing the drug.
