OAKLANDS COUNTRY MANOR

FUGITIVES’ DRIFT

Situated at an altitude of almost 2,000 metres on the Drakensberg escarpment close to Van Reenan’s Pass and the mid way point between Johannesburg and Durban, this beautiful colonial house was built at the turn of the 20th century. Adjacent to the manor house are 13 cosy guest bedrooms set in the gardens. Within the main house is the popular ‘Last Post’ pub, dining room and lounge. In the gardens is a swimming pool and activities include horse riding, fishing and hiking. It is owner-managed by three sisters and you can be assured of a warm welcome. The location is ideal for exploring the northern ‘berg’ and battlefield tours accompanied by an experienced guide can be arranged (charges apply).

Close to the historic battlefield and ‘sphinx’ of Isandlwana, this has always been regarded as ‘the place to stay‘ and the legacy left by David Rattray continues to be upheld as a visit here is sure to leave a lasting impression. Accommodation at the Lodge on the site of the original homestead has 6 attractive cottage bedrooms each with a private verandah giving views of the plains flanking the Buffalo River gorge. Nearby is the Guest House which is an old farmhouse that has been converted with a charming sitting room and dining room. The 6 cottages are individually decorated and from the verandahs are sweeping views of the surrounding battlefields. Daily tours are operated to the surrounding sites by expert guides (charges apply)
