Cable Railing Basics

Key Insights for Selecting and Installing Cable Railing

1 START WITH THE POST FRAMEWORK

Select Your Mounting Substrate

Metal Post

Cable railing with stainless steel posts is popular as it provides a contemporary look that fits with various home decors, from an industrial-style loft to trending modern farmhouse interiors.

Concrete

Cable railing with wood posts is widely used to combine the natural warmth and beauty of wood with the contemporary appeal of stainless steel cable.

In some cases, a post is not required or not possible due to limited space, so cable infill must secure directly to a concrete substrate, like a foundation wall, when installing on a deck.

Select The Post Mounting Option

Fascia mount posts are attached to the side of the deck’s structure, offering a clean, unobstructed deck surface that's easy to maintain.

Surface mount posts are installed directly onto the surface, offering flexibility and ease of installation. This option works especially well for floating stair designs.

2 POST SPACING AND REQUIREMENTS

Key Considerations for Planning and Installing Cable Railing

A The cable should be supported by a post, mid-post, or cable brace no less than every 48 inches to keep consistent spacing, prevent sagging, and support the top rail.

B A top rail is always necessary for structural integrity when building a guard rail with cable infill.

C A complete railing will include 9 – 14 rows of cable depending on post height, framework construction, and cable spacing.

D A three-inch spacing between rows is recommended as it considers cable deflection to comply with the code requirement that no opening be large enough that a 4" sphere can pass. Bezdan Cable posts are pre-drilled with a spacing of less than 3 inches to ensure limited deflection.

E The railing framework must be stable and robust enough to support cable tensioned to prevent cable deflection from allowing a 4" sphere to pass.

3 HOW TO HANDLE CORNERS

Common Solutions for Corner Installations

Since the properties of cable do not accommodate bends past 45 degrees, to create a 90 degree corner and to allow for proper tensioning, choose from these solutions:

Double Post Configuration (Terminated)

The cable run can terminate at the end post and start up again at the next post to create the 90˚ corner.

Single Post Configuration (Terminated)

Use through-post with a surface mount fitting (as shown) or opt for only surface mount fittings for a streamlined, balanced look.

Double Post Configuration (Continuous)

Another solution is to place posts to allow for the cable to pass through at a maximum of 45 degrees.

Single Post Configuration (Continuous)

Another solution is to use Express Mount Brackets to allow for the cable to run continuously around the post.

Metal Usage Guide

METAL POST FRAMEWORKS | SYSTEM OVERVIEW

Cable Fitting Solutions

Cable railing is formed using multiple runs of cable and end fittings. Each run of cable includes one tensioning and one nontensioning fitting. End fittings are distinguished by their installation method and are available as through-post and surface mount for level and stair applications.

When planning cable railing, start with the most visible side of the railing framework which will likely be the longest run. To achieve maximum views with no visible hardware, select a through-post fitting. Access to the back of the end post is required to secure these fittings. Alternatively, when the back of the post is inaccessible, a surface mount fitting can be secured to the inside of the post. A complete railing requires 9 - 14 rows of cable depending on post height and framework. A 3" spacing between rows is recommended to comply with code requirements.

Mounting Type Options

Select from through-post and surface mount mounting type options to suit accessibility of the posts in the railing framework, function, and design preferences.

Through-Post

Fittings pass through the post with minimal obstruction to maximize views. A minimum distance of 2.5"– 3" from the back of the post to the wall is needed to install and secure though-post fittings.

Surface Mount

Fittings are secured to the inside of the post, which is ideal for when the back of a terminating post is inaccessible or when a single post is used at the corner. This solution allows for perfectly aligned cable runs, creating a clean and efficient design.

Installation Guide

The railing framework must be stable and robust enough to support cable tensioned to prevent cable deflection from allowing a 4” sphere to pass.

End Posts

Since hundreds of pounds of tension are being applied to end posts using cable railing, posts must be strong enough to support the tension. Please carefully review the requirements outlined on this page to ensure your installation provides appropriate support. For more detailed technical information regarding framework for cable rail installations go to bezdancable.com

u Stainless steel alloy 316 posts are strongly recommended for exterior applications

u The railing framework must be stable and robust enough to support cable tensioned to prevent cable deflection from allowing a 4” sphere to pass

u Must be securely mounted to the deck to prevent the post from coming loose when cables are tensioned

u The 212 Series and the 232 Series (for stair applications) have been tested for use with Bezdan's stainless steel ø 1-1/2" posts. Test results available upon request.

u The 102, 232 and 262 Series metal post kits are designed for use with 2" square tube

u Wall thickness of end posts to be a minimum 1/4" to handle the load when the cables are tensioned while intermediate posts can be 1/8"

Intermediate Posts

The cable should be supported in some manner no less than every 48" along its run to keep the cable rungs from spreading.

Intermediate posts, other than those that are structurally necessary, can be a thin metal cable brace with holes for the cables to pass through (see Illustration above).

Top and Bottom Rail

Must be sufficient in strength for structural integrity. A bottom rail is not required but does help distribute the force away from the lower portion of the post. If using aluminum, the end posts should be reinforced. A bottom rail to prevent bowing is recommended.

Completing the Cable Railing

Cable railing requires 9–14 rows of cable depending on post height and railing framework. A 3" spacing between rows is recommended to comply with code requirements. All runs of cable and end fittings are installed before tensioning. Follow the recommended tensioning sequence to ensure proper installation and achieve optimal results.

WOOD POST FRAMEWORKS | SYSTEM OVERVIEW

A complete railing requires 9 – 14 rows of cable depending on post height and framework.

How To Measure

Measure and sketch layout.

Identify stair sections and clearly mark measurements on the sketch (refer to illustration). Two measurements are needed to help us determine the best system for you:

1. From inside to inside of each post.

2. From outside to outside of each straight run. This includes the end posts and intermediate posts. Tip: When measuring the length of rail/cable for stairs, remember to keep the tape measure parallel to the angle of the stairs.
