In 2018, Apple and the office of Mayor Rahm Emanuel launched the Everyone Can Code initiative for the City of Chicago. Genesys Works Chicago was a proud partner, launching the first coding track where 23 students spent their summer training learning application design. Moving forward, we will have two coding cohorts this summer helping even more young professionals build the skills necessary for tomorrow’s careers. As we look to the future, another key highlight is corporate partners such as Accenture and Kirkland & Ellis hiring our alumni after they graduate from college.

between what students are taught in the classroom and what’s needed for success in today’s workplace continues to widen, leaving many jobs unfilled and millions of young adults unemployed. Closing these skills and opportunity gaps is an urgent economic and social imperative, particularly for students in under-resourced communities lacking access to most professional work opportunities.
OUR SOLUTION By giving
students the opportunity to succeed in a professional work environment while still in high school, we open up career possibilities and pathways previously thought unattainable. Students complete our 14-month program with in-demand job skills, relevant work experience, elevated career aspirations, and increased confidence that their dreams of college and career success can become a reality.

Unlocking New Opportunities for Chicago Students

High school students in underserved communities are motivated to succeed but many doors remain closed to them. That’s where Genesys Works comes in. We help them see the opportunities around them and give them skills training and meaningful experiences to walk through those doors. All Genesys Works students undergo eight weeks of rigorous training in one of three fields: Information Technology, Accounting/ Finance, or Computer Science. These technical skills prepare them for a year-long corporate internship, but they are only one piece of the puzzle. Students also develop “soft” skills such as dressing professionally and working on a team – skills that AT&T interns Corissa and Lamia have in spades. Corissa learned her new internship skills so quickly that her supervisor was running out of work for her. She now supports multiple teams at AT&T. For Lamia, teamwork means arriving early to work so she can get an update on the day’s tasks and be a resource for her fellow interns. Their commitment to teamwork allows Corissa and Lamia to open even more doors for themselves.

Investing in the Future Workforce Today Known as the City of Broad Shoulders, Chicago has a history of investing in the future workforce. Genesys Works continues that legacy by working with local companies to provide meaningful work experiences to young people. Our students attend high school classes in the morning and then head to their internships each afternoon, but leaving school does not mean they stop learning. Instead, a corporate internship becomes an extension of the classroom, providing new lessons for young professionals. Our corporate partners benefit, too. While interns grow professionally and explore career pathways, their supervisors gain management and mentoring experience. In the end, the company can invest in both their current and future workforce. For corporate partners like CME Group, investing in the future workforce is part of their innovative culture. When Genesys Works Chicago expanded their technical training to include computer science, CME Group was first in line to hire a coding intern. They understand that opening doors for students today – especially in high-demand fields like coding and computer science – leads to their next new hire tomorrow.

Alumni can access services that meet their unique needs. This includes college coaching, professional development, and job placement assistance. For recent college graduates like Yesenia Chavez, these services are invaluable. Yesenia completed an internship at TransUnion while in high school, and four years later, she is now a proud first-generation graduate of the University of Illinois at Chicago. Yesenia’s passion for Human Resources led to her starting a SHRM chapter at her campus. She reached out to Liz Rafferty, GWC Executive Director and experienced HR professional, for advice. Liz gave her career advice and helped support Yesenia’s first HR networking event. With professional skills, meaningful work experience and a strong network, Yesenia is ready to walk through the many doors open to her.

Taking Learning Beyond the Classroom It is no secret that postsecondary education – whether community college or a four-year institution – opens doors for young people. We work closely with our school partners to ensure that each young professional has what they need to prepare for the future.

Students attend a weekly college and career prep course where they complete a postsecondary success plan. Our curriculum helps students navigate college admissions and financial aid, with a goal of finding the best college match. Whether it is college or another pathway, students are equipped to make the right choice for them. Our school partners play an important role in supporting students as they transform into young professionals. Ms. Jimenez, an Assistant Principal at Eric Solorio Academy High School, has witnessed this firsthand. She believes that the new skills a young professional learns at work help them perform better at school. With a combination of school support and real-world experiences, our students take learning beyond the classroom and unlock new opportunities.

Everyone Can Code Genesys Works is collaborating with Apple and the City of Chicago to offer the Everyone Can Code curriculum to Chicago’s nearly 500,000 students. Since the program began in Chicago, 23 Genesys Works students have been able to build the skills they need to pursue careers in the app and coding economy by becoming proficient in Swift, Apple’s easy-to-learn programming language. In 2019, Genesys Works is doubling its coding class to 50 students. Everyone Can Code in Chicago is a program designed by Apple to help everyone learn how to code, creating opportunities for all students and preparing them for the workforce. The comprehensive program includes a range of free resources, from helping students explore basic coding concepts to building fully functional apps. “With this new track, we are able to provide our students with the digital skills they need to compete in today’s workforce.
