FIREMEN’S HOME WINS CRYSTAL APPLE AWARD FROM COLUMBIA COUNTY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE (Hudson, NY: March 24, 2008)- The Firemen’s Home, serving volunteer firefighters from communities throughout New York State, has been named the winner of the 19th Annual Crystal Apple Award at the recent awards ceremony held at the Columbia Golf and Country Club.

The Crystal Apple Award, sponsored by the Columbia County Chamber of Commerce, is presented to the Chamber member in recognition of an extraordinary contribution to economic progress, community improvement, and the quality of life in Columbia County during 2007.

The Firemen’s Home is a 92-bed facility that serves volunteer firefighters (and their spouses) and ladies auxiliary members. After two years of construction and anticipation, the Firemen’s Home moved into its new home in June 2007. Designed with all the comforts of home and every amenity possible, members are able to enjoy a healthy, active lifestyle in a magnificent setting.

Craig Wittman, Administrator of the Firemen’s Home, stated, “We are incredibly proud to win this important award.

As volunteer firefighters, our members gave much to their communities over the years and we’re pleased to be able to give back to them and the community as well.” John Porreca, Jr., Comptroller and Human Resources Director of the Firemen’s Home, added, “We are extremely honored that the staff of the Firemen’s Home has once again been recognized for their dedication to excellence.”

The Firemen’s Home is the only nursing home in New York State devoted to caring for volunteer firefighters.

In addition to the Firemen’s Home of the State of New York, the four other worthy nominees included Crosswinds at Hudson/3D Development, The Mac-Haydn Theatre, Spencertown Academy Arts Center and SunDog Solar.

The prestigious Crystal Apple Award consists of a stunning crystal apple from Steuben Glass and symbolizes Columbia County’s simple beauty, agricultural heritage and quality of life.

The criteria for nominations was based on significant improvement of community services, expanded educational opportunities, private investment, job creation, visible demonstration of confidence in the County’s economic future, and distinguished involvement in civic affairs.

FRANK KNOWER RE-ELECTED DIRECTOR NYS FIRE CHAPLAINS On Sunday, April 20, we met in the Winona Lake Fire House. A discussion was held regarding the Convention Outing, which will be held at the “Fallsview” on Thursday at 4 PM (don’t forget your wristbands).

Also discussed was the membership of this association which now numbers at 299. Next year we will celebrate our fiftieth year of existence and we should consider something special for a celebration. Let’s make an effort to get as many members out to march in the parades this year and particularly next year.

It was further discussed that President Jim Ryan should investigate the possibility of (partially) hosting a future convention parade, either singularly or in unison with another association or fire department in an effort to sustain the Hudson Valley VFA tradition of a great convention parade.

Frank Knower, HVVFA Past President from Tappan, was re-elected to a three year term (ending in 2010) as a Director of the NYS Association of Fire Chaplains. This election was at the State Fire Chaplains’ 41st annual conference and training seminar held at the NYS Frederick L. Warder Academy of Fire Science in Montour Falls, NY. Frank, as a Director coordinates activities of the 13 counties of NYS in Region 2-East.

Hello ladies, I was truly sorry to have to miss the meeting at Kerhonkson. I was battling my lung disease and it won this time. I was down for the proverbial count.

According to the information I received we had a successful meeting on several fronts. There were a total of 55 people in attendance. 48 members;1 delegate; 6 guests and 10 counties represented.

East Greenbush Fire Company Elects Officers for 2008 The East Greenbush Fire Company’s Headquarters was the site of the East Greenbush Fire Company’s 2008 Installation Dinner. The 92nd Annual Installation and Inspection event was held in the Company’s banquet hall on Saturday January 19, 2008, and was attended by over 200 members and guests.

Christopher Lavin, with over 40 years of dedicated service to the Fire Company, offered the oath of office to his son, Fire Company President Peter Lavin. President Lavin installed the following Executive Officers for 2008: Vice President Jeffrey Tooker; Recording Secretary Michael Benson, Jr., Financial Secretary Nancy Baker; Treasurer Paul Benson; Membership Secretary Nancy Condit; Sergeant-at-Arms Tracy Britt; Board of Directors Chairman Dennis Kennedy, Michael Benson Sr., Timothy Boel, David Chesnut, Thomas Chesser and Daniel Speed.

Past Chief David A. Cook offered the oath of office to the following officers for 2008: Fire Chief Clark Roehr; 1st Assistant Chief Edward DiMartino; 2nd Assistant Chief Kevin Hitchcock; 3rd Assistant Chief Christopher Dick.

Michael Prestipino was awarded Officer of the Year. Past Chief Michael Benson, Sr., was recognized as Firefighter of the Year. Thomas Chesser, Todd Cullum, Edward DiMartino, Franklyn Jenkins, Kyle Keenan, Michael Prestipino, Nancy Baker, Kimberly Edberg and Jeanne Mastin were awarded Life Membership in the Fire Company. Retiring Chief David Cook was honored for his service as Chief of the Department

by Chief Roehr. Retiring President Timothy Boel was honored for his service as President of the East Greenbush Fire Company by President Lavin.

LEGISLATIVE REPORT March 8, 2008, saw the Westchester County/FASNY/ HVVFA joint Legislative Conference at Montrose Fire House. Approximately eight legislators and some eighty to one hundred firefighters were in attendance. As usual, the legislators proved their concern for firefighter issues.

One week later, Hudson-Mohawk VFA and Hudson Valley VFA held their joint Legislative Conference at the Athens, NY Firehouse. Once again there was a very nice turn out.

Some forty-five to fifty firefighters showed up to hear their legislators express concerns for firefighter issues Assemblymen Peter Lopez and Marcus Molinaro were the two representatives who appeared .

May 10 will be the 3rd Annual Mid-Hudson Valley Legislative conference. This year we will be at the Saxton Firehouse in Saugerties. As it appears today, we are expecting three legislators to appear. Hopefully, there will be a “healthy” turnout of concerned emergency responders.

Many thanks go out to the many legislators who gave their time to listen to our needs and wants. We would also be remiss if we did not also thank the men and women who prepared those delicious refreshments that we have come to expect. Thanks to ALL! John Balling, HVVFA Leg. Chairman

Palmer Engine Hose Installs 2008 Officers Palmer Engine Hose Company of Kinderhook, NY, held its annual banquet on April 5, 2008 at Kozel’s Restaurant in Ghent. This was a milestone for the company, as it was their 125th anniversary. Several officials were present at the event including : Senator Steve Saland and Tim Gordon; Mayor William VanAlstyne of Kinderhook; Past Chief Joe Loeffler of Valatie; and members of the New York State Police and the Columbia County Sheriff's Department. Also present were representatives from FASNY, OFPC, Hudson Valley Volunteer Firemen’s Association, and Hudson-Mohawk Volunteer Firemen’s Association. George Harp and Jim Coons presented certificates on behalf of these organizations.

Fire Company Officers installed were: President, Chuck Rothermel; Vice President, Pete Hunter; Rec. Secretary, Keith Beebe; Fin. Secretary, Larry Eisen; Treasurer, John Balli; Trustees—Dave Shultis, Davis Johnson, Ray Lauster, and Bruce Charbonneau.

Rensselaer County Fire Chiefs Association Installs 2008 Officers The 65th Annual Installation Banquet of the Rensselaer County Fire Chiefs Association was held on April 21, 2008. Over 180 members and distinguished guests attended the event, which was held in the banquet hall of the Averill Park-Sand Lake Fire Department.

Rensselaer County Clerk Frank Merola offered the oath of office to the 2008 Association Officers: President Jay Wilson, 1st Vice President Steve Kelly, 2nd Vice President William Osterhout, Secretary Vickie Dichian, Treasurer Richard Daus, Sergeant-at-Arms William Sheeran, Jr., Past President Joseph Crandall, Directors Robert Albert, Larry Maskell, Jim Hunt, Ivan Wager and Walter Webster, Jr. The evening’s keynote address was provided by David Quinn, Chief Executive Officer of the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York. Rensselaer County Executive Kathy Jimino offered remarks commending the efforts of the fire service in Rensselaer County. Past President Joseph Crandall was recognized for his efforts leading the Rensselaer County Fire Chiefs Association for the past two years by incoming President Jay Wilson. Chief Walter O'Niell of the Berlin Lake Fire Department was recognized as Fire Chief of the Year. The Assistant Chief of the Year award, awarded in the memory of Rensselaer Fire Department Assistant Chief Michael Falkauski, was presented to Past Chief John Houser, Jr. of the Mountainview Fire Department. Ten members of the Defreestville Fire Department were recognized as Firefighters of the Year for their heroic efforts while extricating a motor vehicle accident victim during a major thunderstorm. As the crew began extrication activities, a severe thunderstorm enveloped the scene. During the height of the storm, a large tree branch fell within the area the crew was working, causing three additional injuries to emergency responders and causing significant damage to the apparatus and police cruiser.

The firefighters persevered and successfully extricated the victim despite the vicious weather.

The evening’s event concluded with the awarding of the W.J. Cowee Award, an award presented annually to the business that has demonstrated a significant commitment to their neighboring Fire Company. MESSAGE FROM President Harry Barrett It’s hard to believe that the year is almost over. It seems like only last week that I started through the chairs. I must say, it has been a rewarding experience.

Traveling throughout the Valley with Bill, John, Joe, & Nellie has been pleasurable to say the least. I have made many new friends along the way and I will never forget them. I guess the time went fast because we are always busy attending meetings and functions.

I am so very proud to be President of one of the most powerful and highly respected firematic sections in the state. However, I could have not gotten there without the support and friendship of many people. My own Loch Sheldrake Fire Department, the Sullivan County Volunteer Firefighter’s Association, my fellow officers and members of the HVVFA and of course and most special, my family; My wonderful wife Lorraine, children Kristin, Jessica, Jennifer and Mike.

My Vice Presidents, Tom and Don have been great to work with. The Directors, County Vice Presidents and the Committee people have done, on the most part, an outstanding job in their duties. A lot has been accomplished, thanks to all.

I am looking forward to the June convention in Ellenville. The convention host, SUPSA, has done an outstanding job, not only in ensuring that we have everything we need for the convention, but also that our families and guests have plenty to do throughout the week .

My hat’s off to them Tom and Don have worked very hard on the new revised Redbook/Journal project. Having all of last year’s convention information and this years’ committee reports, by law changes, committee changes, convention information and our ads in one book and having it done for the convention was quite a task, and should be a plus for the convention My thanks to them.

Once again, thanks to all of you for a great year. Lets all have a great convention.

The Brewster Fire Department in the Village of Brewster in Putnam County hosted the Royal Order of the Blue Vests meeting on March 16, 2008. The registration started at noontime with many members arriving earlier. President Rivera announced that the Board of Directors will be meeting at 1:00 pm. The topics discussed will be presented to the membership during the business meeting.

President Rivera opened the business meeting at 2:00 pm. The Invocation was given by Chaplain Frederick Van Loan (Athens Volunteer Fire Department, Greene County). Chief Rick Tofte of the Brewster Fire Department welcomed all in attendance, noted the fire exits, and invited the membership to partake of the refreshments after the conclusion of the meeting. The Committee reports included the Royal Order of the Blue Vests Annual Picnic & Meeting (May 31), the Annual Steak Roast outing (June 19), and the Blue Vests day at the Firemen’s Home in Hudson (June 28). President Rivera thanked the Committees for their reports and especially . Jim Coons, George Harp, and George Hill for their many years serving on the Christmas & Home Day committees. Fin.Sec./Treas. George Hill reminded everyone that he is collecting the 2008 Annual Dues, the monies for the Annual Picnic and the monies for the Steak Roast.

Please pay your dues promptly. Applications were read for three new prospective members. The new members are: Robert Fox— Brewster Fire Department (Putnam County); Chris Gearwar—Lake George Volunteer Fire Company (Warren County), John Mulligan— Saugerties Fire Department (Ulster County).

Under New Business, the new kid on the block Thomas McKinney gave a brief report on the Firemen’s Home and thanked the Royal Order of the Blue Vests for their continued support. Tom mentioned that the Firemen’s Home received the Golden Apple award from the Columbia County Chamber of Commerce. Preident Harry Barrett gave a brief report on the Hudson Valley Volunteer Firemen’s Association scheduled meetings and events.

President Rivera announced that the nominations for the Chair Officers of the Royal Order of the Blue Vests are next. The nominations are as follows:President Paul McCagg (Columbia County); 1st Vice President John Shafer (Dutchess County); 2nd Vice President.

President Rivera announced that nominations for the Directors of the Royal Order of the Blue Vests will be made at the Business Meeting in Hurleyville. President Rivera then called for the drawing of the winning 50/50 ticket. The winning (and very lucky) member this meeting was Past President George Stacey. As always, there were a lot of “Boo’s & Hiss’s” from all of the unlucky ticket buyers.

The Benediction was given by Chaplain Frederick Van Loan. President Rivera presented a Certificate of Appreciation to the Brewster Fire Department. Chief Rick Tofte accepted on behalf of the Brewster Fire Department.

Refreshments were available before and after the meeting. Everyone was welcome and the refreshments were delicious. The March meeting is the traditional Corned Beef & Cabbage refreshments. A special Thank You goes to the members of the Brewster Fire Department for hosting the March meeting, for their wonderful hospitality, and for the great refreshments.

PAWLING FIRE DEPARTMENT INSTALLS NEW OFFICERS On Friday January 11, 2008 the Pawling Fire Department hosted their annual installation dinner. At this dinner this is the time that the department swears in all Firematic and administrative officers. To start the night Sheriff Butch Anderson was the master of ceremonies to make sure the program goes along smoothly also brining humor to the program as well. First order of business was to honor State Senator Vincent Leibell for his continued support not only to the fire service but the Pawling Fire Department as well. Fire commissioner Richard Muller presented the plaque to Senator Leibell for his efforts. Next on the agenda was to recognize Willy Lates for his volunteer work that he gives to the department during our carnival. You can always find Willy in the food booth during the carnival serving the food to the public. The department also recognized other young people during our dinner dance last December they were Amanda Boo, Rebecca Maile, Melissa & Brian Morgan, and Caitlin Galvin. It’s great to see young people stepping up to the plate and doing their part for the department as well as their community.

Next on the agenda was to recognize Ben Scavone for the great job he did as recording secretary. Then it was time for the president’s award and that went to Hap Hap Kimma receiving President’s Award Kimma for the fantastic work he did as membership secretary amid all the difficulties he had this year. Next was time to recognize Cathy Giordano town clerk for the work she has done and continues to do with the Fire Police making sure that they are all sworn in with the State of New York. It was time to recognize Cathy Reily, as president of the Pawling Auxiliary for their continued support to the department during our fundraisers, fires and the new chairs that they gave to the department. Next up was to show our support for out going Chief Bill Reily. Chief Brill along with Captain White present EX-Chief Bill Reilly with a helmet with the inscription Ex-Chief Bill Reily in gold on the front and an eagle on the back of it. This gift was for the last four years Bill has been Chief and the great contribution he did for the department. Next on the agenda was to present the chiefs award, that went to Skip Reid for the great effort he does for the department. Then it was the firefighter of the year and that went to Captain Everett White of Holmes Hose Company # 2.

Chief Reily stated it was for the great job Everett does and continues to do and he sees a future leader stepping up. The next person to recognize was Sharon Boo for the great work she does with the beautification of the outside of the building as well as the area near the sign on Dutcher and South Streets. If you wonder why the place looks so beautiful with flowers you now know why. Also Captain Everett White receiving Firefighter of Year Award Sharon was recognized for her photo work over the years capturing all the moments as time was going by. Then came the big event when Commissioner Muller swore in all the Officers. Bob Brill as District Chief, Dave Denzel as Deputy District Chief, James Lapp Station one Assistant Chief, Fred Lates Station 2 Assistant Chief, Chris Lapp as Station 3 Assistant Chief. Station one Captain of Hook & Ladder is Chris Barberesi; John Esposito Lieutenant of H&L, On to Holmes Hose Company #2 Captain is Everett White and Lieutenant Tim Higgins. After the line officers came the administrative officers of the Department. Everett Reid as President, Vincent Galvin as Vice-President, James Lapp as Treasurer, Hap Kimma as Membership Secretary and Peggy Mulligan as Secretary. Then it was time for the Ladies Auxiliary, elected as President is Cathy Riley, Barbara Miller as Vice President, Treasurer Debbie White and Secretary Margo Maxwell. After all the swearing in of officers we all watched a video that Sharon Boo made for outgoing Chief Bill Reily recapping the last ten years or so of the department. It was great job done

by Sharon we all had time to reflect on days of past. In closing I would like to say it was a great dinner and to give recognition to all the men and women in the Pawling Fire Department who serve and protect the Town and Village of Pawling.

Apparatus judging WILL be done in the line-up area PRIOR to the dress parade, from 9:00AM to 11:00AM. In order for your apparatus to be judged, it must be in its respective line-up area by 9:00AM on Saturday, June 21, 2008.

Failure to have your apparatus judged WILL NOT disqualify your organization from other trophies, including the “OVERALL TROPHY”.

Each apparatus that is to be judged MUST have a qualified driver with it during the judging. Any apparatus that is not accompanied by a qualified driver WILL NOT be judged.

The Mardi Gras parade will take place in the hamlet of Napanoch on Friday, June 20 and line-up on old Route 209 and Continental Avenue. Parade line-up will be 6:00 PM and step off will be 7:00 PM. The parade will progress down Main Street, Napanoch and end at the BPOE 1971 Elk’s Club Pavilion. Live entertainment at the Elk’s Club will be performed by “River’s Edge”.

Mark your calendars and get ready for Wallkill Hook, Ladder and Hose’s “Fall Haul” Poker Run on the morning of October 5. Motorcycles and care will gather at the Wallkill firehouse in the town of Shawangunk for a “cruise” (ride) through the Shawangunk Mountains at the peak of autumn colors. Maps will be provided to guide “cruisers” to several Ulster County firehouses where, at each, participants will pick a playing card and have it logged on their tally sheet. At the end of the several hour ride, they will all meet back at Pops Pavilion in Wallkill and enjoy music, food (including a pig roast), door prizes and three cash prizes for the best Poker hands drawn from the cruise stops. Vendors will also be on hand with a variety of merchandise for sale.

Proceeds from the fund raiser will benefit the Wallkill firehouse and “The Firemen’s Home” located in scenic Hudson, NY. The Firemen’s Home of the State of New York is the only nursing home in the state dedicated to caring for volunteer firefighters. With a brand new facility, which had its grand opening in 2007, residents receive excellent care in a state of the art facility. All are welcome to visit the facility, as well as the FASNY Museum, which is also on the grounds.

Cost of the run will be $25 per rider/driver, $20 per passenger and $$10 for passenger under 18 years old (No Poker Hand). Pre-Registrants will receive an event T-shirt and a commemorative pin. QUASSAICK BRIDGE FIRE DISTRICT TO BUILD A NEW FIREHOUSE Recognizing the current and future growth potential of the Quassaick Bridge Fire District, the members of the Board of Fire Commissioners realized that our facilities would need to grow in order to properly serve the community.

On October 26, 2004, the Board of Fire Commissioners formed a building committee and appointed John T. Babcock chairman to investigate the impact of modernizing the current facility or building a new facility.

On August 14, 2006, the Board of Fire Commissioners advertised for professional services to do a feasibility study to evaluate our current facility and future needs.

After thoroughly examining all of the addition, renovation and new construction options, the consultant team recommended the needs of the District would be best served by the construction of a new fire station l on the present site.

As a result of this effort, the current size of the new firehouse was designed for 15,000 square feet at a probable cost of $4.9 million dollars.

The Board of Fire Commissioners under the leadership of John T. Babcock, Chairman, spearheaded a publicity campaign to inform the residents of the need for a new fire station. The bond vote was set for July 31, 2007.

Prior to the vote we held an open house, public hearing and our firemen went door-to-door handing out flyers to promote the upcoming bond vote. The evening before the bond vote our ladies auxiliary called the residents of the fire district to come out and vote on July 31st, 2007 With all of this publicity the residents came out in full force and voted three to one in support of the bond.

In the long history of our Fire Department we have never asked the public for anything of this size and magnitude.

We were up front and honest with the public who were appreciative by responding with a “Yes Vote� for our new fire station.

Again, we would like to thank the residents of our fire district for coming out and supporting their volunteers and appreciating the work that we do for our community.

Rombout Fire Department Honors Residents of the Firemen’s Home (FISHKILL, NY) Rombout Fire Company along with the Ladies Auxiliary hosted a dinner for the members of the Firemen’s Home at Rombout Fire Department Station 1 in Fishkill. Arriving to a warm welcome, the twelve residents were escorted to the catering hall where Rombout 2nd Assistance Chief Wes Hall.

Wes welcomed the members and introduced the Rombout Chiefs, line officers, commissioners and special guests.

Three of the special guests were from Dutchess County Emergency Response: Retired from Car 1—William “Bud” Pottenburgh with his son, Kyle (currently Car 14) and Retired Chief Dispatcher Al K a e h le r .

Other guests were Paul O’Brien, Trustee for FASNY Firemen’s Home and member of the Verplank Fire Department, Diana Balling—3Yr. Director from LAFASNY, John Balling— from HVVFA newspaper, Rombout Past Chief Ken Scofield and his wife Patty. Also in attendance was Hughsonville Fire Department’s Chief Glen Kramer with his Assistance Chiefs’ Tim Laffin and Bruce Flower and ten members of the department. All the participants wanted to provide the residents with a social affair, good will and recognition for their many years of service to the community.

After the completion of the roast beef dinner, Firemen’s Home member and past Hughsonville 2nd Assistant Chief Walter “Wally” Hall was honored and thanked for his fifteen years of service—serven of them as Assistant Chief with the Hughsonville Fire Department. Wallly was presented with a fire department hat. Rombout Past Chief Ken Scofield continued with honoring Wally for his years of service, friendship and reading a poem Wally had written about the early days of Rombout Fire Department. This poem hangs in Station 1 with honors.

To help remember the evening, all Firemen’s Home members received a Rombout Fire Department hat emblazed with the American Flag and members then enjoyed bingo, winning gift certificates from Wal-Mart.

The main surprise of the evening was from Rombout Ladies Auxiliary President Patty Lamoree who presented four used but in good condition electric wheelchairs to Trustee Paul O’Brien to be used in the Firemen’s Home.

The Ladies Auxiliary has delivered Christmas presents to all the members and donated to the recreation fund at the home for over 20 years. Rombout Fire Company plans to make this dinner an a n n u a l event.

For over 100 years the Firemen’s Home has been the only nursing home in New York State devoted to caring for volunteer firefighter (and spouses) as well as members of Ladies Auxiliaries, who have provided service to the volunteer fire service community. The beautiful campus, located on 122 acres HEY GUYS, LOOK, I WON!!! of rolling hills, overlooks the Hudson River in Hudson NY.
