JIM CRYTZER MEMORIAL INVITATIONAL
In 2015 the Washington and Lee Invitational, held annually on the first weekend of January, was
renamed the Jim Crytzer Memorial Tourament in honor of the late Jim Crytzer ‘77. Jim was a legend on the wrestling mat and a 2015 inductee into the W&L Athletic Hall of Fame, as well as a distinguished alumnus who loved W&L. We are honored to continue that tradition and honor his memory through this event. This year the Jim Crytzer Memorial Tournament will be held on January 7. Action begins at 9 am and will feature over 10 teams from 6 states, including Virginia, North Carolina, Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Maryland. Last year the generals had a champion, a runner-up, and four total placewinners on their way to a 6th place team finish.
HISTORY
Washington and Lee University is named for two men who played pivotal roles in the University’s history.
George Washington, whose generous endowment of $20,000 in 1796 helped the fledgling school (then known as Liberty Hall Academy) survive. Robert E. Lee, who provided innovative educational leadership during his transformational tenure as president of Washington College from 1865 to 1870.
Washington and Lee is a small, private, liberal arts university nestled between the Blue Ridge and Allegheny Mountains in Lexington, Va. It is the ninth oldest institution of higher learning in the nation. Founded in 1749 by Scotch-Irish pioneers who had migrated deep into the Valley of Virginia as Augusta Academy, it was renamed Liberty Hall in 1776. Having moved to Lexington, in 1782 it was chartered as Liberty Hall Academy by the Virginia legislature and empowered to grant degrees.

After Lee’s death in 1870, the trustees voted to change the name from Washington College to Washington and Lee University. Once an all-male institution, Washington and Lee first admitted women to its law school in 1972. The first undergraduate women matriculated in 1985. Since then, Washington and Lee has flourished. Liberty Hall’s single limestone building, erected in 1793 on the crest of a ridge overlooking Lexington, burned in 1803. Today W&L’s 35 principal buildings include the picturesque Washington College group forming the Colonnade facing Lee Chapel, both National Historic Landmarks. Washington and Lee is composed of two undergraduate divisions, the College and the Williams School of Commerce, Economics, and Politics; and a graduate School of Law. Offering 37

undergraduate majors and 29 minors, including a number of interdisciplinary programs, the University prides itself on the depth and breadth of our curriculum, in which traditional liberal arts courses are augmented by offerings from the only fully-accredited business and journalism programs among the nation’s top-tier liberal arts colleges. W&L’s motto, “not unmindful of the future,” underlies the University’s commitment to providing a liberal arts education that is vital and relevant to the 21st century. By combining the benefits of a liberal arts foundation with emerging technologies and interdisciplinary perspectives, our students head into life after college equipped with the habits of mind, strength of character and essential knowledge needed to pursue lives of consequence.
