BRAND VALUES

ancia is one of the most important Italian automobile manufacturers, founded in 1906 by Vincenzo Lancia which became part of the Fiat Group in 1969. The company is known for the production of high-quality luxury cars, its rally heritage, and the use of Greek letters for its model’s names. The name “Lancia” has always been synonyous with Italian style, luxury, comfort and innovation. “Tipo 51 / Alpha” was the first Lancia to have been ever produced, but Lancia “Lambda” is the car which would make the manufacturer famous. The Lambda was well-known for its technical innovation, the first car to have been built with a monocoque chassis. It has also received many accolades for its stylish design and its reliability. There are many models that have made automobile history through the years: Aprilia (one of the first cars to have been designed in a wind tunnel), Aurelia (the first production car to have been powered by a V6 engine, also one of the most beautiful cars in history), Ardena, Flavia, Flaminia, Stratos HF (the first Lancia supercar, three-time WRC Champion) etc. The Lancia “Stratos Zero”, is a concept car designed by Bertone and features radical styling, rally car mechanics but also bizarre ergonomics. This has has often been cited as a masterpiece of Italian design, and also an automotive jewel, as it is only a prototype.

THE CONCEPT

36

cLaren-Honda R1 brings the concept of old-school racing back, to the future. This racing car is one of many contestants that are going to participate in an endurace racing champioship, whose purpose is to generate electricity to power future cities, with races running on old reconstructed race tracks such as the “AVUS or the Brooklands Raceway. Cars are going to be run by privateers who take the chassis and body shell (both manufactured via 3D printing) from a constructor and the eco-firendly powertrain from another supplier, thus lowering the costs and rescuscitating the old racing spirit. The car is driven by the driver, who is navigated by his co-driver. Not only has the codriver navigational duties, but he is also responsible for team communication and aerodynamics management. Eagles served as the main inspiration for the aesthetics (both for the interior and the exterior of the car ). Due to their natural aerodynamic properties, eagles have always been a subject for studies by mankind for a very long time. The concept of active aerodynamics in the project (with front, back and side wings movable) is borrowed from the basic aerodynamic principals applied in the flight of the eagle.

Due to the great instensity of the race, driver and co-driver share the same car. However they sit on two separate cockpits. Communication within the car is made through microphones, so that the drivers do their respective duties concentrating only on the race.

he rigid racing seats, are covered in a smart, super-adhesive material inspired by gecko’s feet. This kind of fabric provides optimal grip even in contact with very smooth surfaces (such as glass). The fabric eliminates the necessity of seat belts, as the drivers remain attached to their seats even in an event of a crash. Drivers are also protected by the helmet attached to the car, which provides both drivers with information regarding the car and the race (Augmented Reality screens are installed inside the helmet, for the drivers to have a constant Head Up Display during the race). The co-driver is responsible for the navigation of the racing track, team-tocar communication, and active aerodynamics control. By moving the shifts, he is able to operate both front, back and side wings of the car.natural aerodynamic properties, eagles have always been a subject for studies by mankind for a very long time. MINI PROJECT

THE SCENARIO

F

uture, Earth 2110: Our planiet is overpopulated and humans are looking for other planets out in the galaxy, and also building new homes in space stations. Inspired by futuristic Sci-fi movies, humans have re-invented the legendary race of “1000 Miglia”. The race will takes place in the cosmos. The starting point is on Earth, and the destination is a new human colony in the cosmos, and back. The journey is 1000 space miles unit long (a new unit of length used for space journeys). Mercedes-Benz AMG Petronas Team have launched a new vehicle to campaign the the gruelling race. The SLG AMG Racing Shuttle has been purposely design for the new “1000 Miglia”. The vehicle absorbs not only, solar energy but it also collects space dust, which is then used for producing kinetic energy and scientific examination, thus making the race an instrument of scientific exploration as well. In the future, space stations will be a common object in the cosmic landscape of the future. The can be used as checkpoints or even as destinations. Racers will have to follow a certain path which reminds of he old track of “1000 Miglia” from Brescia to Rome. Track’s circular blue lights guide the pilots. If a racing shuttle goes off the course, lights go red and the pilot gets a time penalty.

The “1000 Miglia” was an open-road endurance race which took place in Italy twenty-four times from 1927 to 1957 (thirteen before the war, eleven from 1947). Like the older Targa Florio and later the Carrera Panamericana, the MM made Gran Turismo (Grand Touring) sports cars like Alfa Romeo, BMW, Ferrari, Maserati and Porsche famous. The race brought out an estimated five million spectators. It was one of the most important endurance races in the history of motorsport. The SLG AMG draws inspiration from the successful silver arrows of the 1930’s and 1950’s, such as the great 300SLR, which won the “1000 Miglia” in 1955 (whose record was not beaten in the last two years the race was held), and World Sportscar Championship in the same year, driven by Sir Striling Moss. The space opera movie franchise of “Star Wars” served as the main inspirational source for the development of this futuristic scenario in whic the “1000 Miglia” race will take place. Hence the future of mankind might be directed to new adventures in the outter space, racing in cosmos may be possible.
