MATT SHAKMAN

Welcome to The Door You Never Saw Before: A Choosical Musical! This production marks the Geffen’s first Theater for Young Audiences production in the virtual space. Ever since I joined the Geffen as Artistic Director, it has been a goal of mine to develop and produce more TYA programming—to introduce children to this art form and build the next generation of theater-lovers. After a year that has forced kids across the globe to stay inside, we wanted to create an adventure that will spark their imaginations, allow them to meet new characters and explore different sights, and simply provide a good dose of fun. When we decided to embark on a TYA show for the Stayhouse series, Matt Schatz immediately came to mind as a collaborator. Matt’s good-humored wordplay, talent as a composer, and whimsical sense of theatricality are perfectly suited for an audience

of kids and grownups alike. It has been a delight to work with Matt and director Katie Lindsay as they, in a way, created a new brand of storytelling: the Zoom musical. Along with the talented designers, wonderful cast, and indispensable behind-thescreens team, they have brought the Harmonious Land of Harmonicania to vibrant life. Whether this is your first Stayhouse show or your seventh, I want to thank you for coming along for the ride as we’ve worked to bring interactive online theater to audiences in new and engaging ways. We trust that a return to in-person theater is just around the corner and look forward to seeing you there. In the meantime, we hope this show will bring some joy to all the kids—and kids at heart—who are on this journey with us. Matt Shakman Artistic Director
