Comment Welcome to this year’s CNC machinery and equipment supplement. Set against a what we all hope to be the tail-end of a year-long pandemic. Having been in contact with numerous furniture and joinery manufacturers over the last 12 months, it is clear to see that the stay-at-home and work-from-home messages have fuelled an entirely unexpected mini-boom for those who have been able to adapt well to the changes forced upon them. Regarding the economic outlook, it’s pretty positive too: the projection for UK GDP growth is between 3.5% and 4.5% during 2021, and for 2022 up to around 5% growth before slowing somewhat in 2023. In this year’s CNC supplement, as usual we have a wide range of suppliers of machinery, equipment and software to tempt readers with transformative technology-based solutions. The case for CNC-derived technology, ranging from dedicated CNC tooling through relatively modest and highly effective drill/boring machines to complex lines with multiple CNC-driven machines in concert, has been made clear for several decades and whether your business is concerned with high-volume production or small batches or even bespoke indidivual products, CNC technology could and perhaps should be at the heart of your operation. I hope you enjoy the issue.

An example of the Morbidelli m range, the Morbidelli m200 is widely recognised as a benchmark for CNC machining centres. Its solid structure, 250mm piece transit, five-axis Prisma KT and Morbidelli m200 Flexmatic plane can handle not only every kind of panel machining, but also those for solid wood

Machining centres for furniture within the Morbidelli range THE LATEST GENERATION FOR NESTING Morbidelli x200/x400 This machine is the latest-generation SCM solution for nesting, ideal for flexible batch-one production. Pieces, even shaped ones, in a variety of forms and sizes can be cut on a single numerical control machining centre, with production levels once considered inconceivable for this kind of machining. Unique flexibility All the machining work is done without removing the spoil board panel, thanks to the X-POD suction cups and the JQX (Just Quality eXtreme) five-axis electrospindle. This dramatically reduces the machine’s set-up times. Previously inconceivable productivity Thanks to the new labeller inside the machine’s cabin, the labelling

of individual panels is executed automatically, before the panel is machined (even in the case of a standalone version), and this optimises cycle times. Maximum grip It is possible to vacuum down even the smallest pieces during machining, thanks to the new X-Vacuum system, which allows for a dynamic vacuum to be activated, concentrating it on the worktable zone where machining is ongoing. Maximum versatility The machining centre can be configured to suit a business’ requirements. The Morbidelli x200/x400 can be used in Smooth, Neutral or Dynamic mode to personalise program applications in an instant.

MACHINING CENTRES FOR PANEL DRILLING, ROUTING AND EDGEBANDING Morbidelli p800 This is SCM’s no-compromise solution, which combines the traditional operations carried out on a machining centre with the possibility of edging even the most difficult shaped pieces. The combination between the MATIC work plane and the innovative operator unit means the Morbidelli p800 can machine even the most complex pieces, in a few steps. From the 0-360° edge closures, to the tilted edgebanding, via automatic change of the pressure roller, there are no boundaries for this machining centre, says SCM.

SCM opens up a new era for drilling with Morbidelli ux200 Absolute quality and superior precision, combined with unbeatable productivity and ease of use – these are the strengths of the new range of numerically controlled drilling solutions from SCM, states the supplier. The Morbidelli ux200 has been designed to meet the growing needs for batch-one and integrated production. This grants producers the possibility of satisfying any given customer’s special requirements without compromising on the benefits of industrial production. Every detail in this machine has been designed with meticulous care in order to allow all the required machining operations to be performed with high-efficiency, topquality and advanced technology. The machine that best combines flexibility and high productivity Thanks to the four separate operator units (two upper and two lower), any piece can be machined in a few steps. Furthermore, the possibility of simulaneously processing two overlapping pieces also means the production of symmetrical pieces can be doubled. A noteworthy feature in the Morbidelli ux200d is the exclusive dowelling unit with dual variable axis, which can be adjusted according to the distance between holes. Among the features available across the entire series is the dual automatic toolchanger for both the upper and lower electrospindles (used for simultaneous machining of opposite sides of panels), and the tool for Clamex customised joints.

Superior finishing is achieved thanks the JQX (Just Quality eXtreme) five-axis, direct-driven spindle head, which ensures the absence of vibrations even with huge material removal at high speed – and with the high-performance drilling heads with RO.AX (rotoaxial spindle technology) spindles, with rotation speeds up to 8000rpm

Cycle time optimisation, thanks to the shaped clamps The new clamps’ design allows drilling and routing operations even on the inside of the clamping area. The software Maestro CNC is in charge of optimising all the operations in order to minimise clamp switches. Perfect drilling – the Ro.AX spindle Zero play during machining can be ensured with the latest RO.AX technology (rotoaxial spindle technology) – the most efficient spindle on the market, with rotation speeds up to 6000rpm. The sturdiness of drilling heads is proven by the reduced maintenance costs, which are five times less than those imposed by the majority of other machine manufacturers, says SCM. Other advantages are offered by the highly advanced computer software, which controls the drilling cycles and the ability to automatically load panels of any size. In addition, in case of a double panel machining, the Maestro CNC is able to automatically create the operations for the second piece – one program, but several ways of working! Highly versatile, the Morbidelli ux200d can operate as a standalone machine or as an integrated part of a production line, with various types of workpiece conveyors and loading/unloading systems. www.scmgroup.com

Effective CNC performance at an accessible price point Lancashire-based Exel CNC has been manufacturing and supplying CNC routers for nearly 15 years. One of the UK’s largest and most longstanding suppliers, Exel CNC has built an enviable reputation for quality and customer service. The company’s latest range of machinery includes the heavy-duty M1S series CNC router and the enclosed series CNC routing centres. “Never before have we been able to bring such capable machines to market at such accessible pricing,” explains Exel CNC MD, Mark Hepworth. “Being an automation manufacturer first and foremost has enabled Exel CNC to use their skill and knowledge to develop and improve this series. “The M1S is unrivalled in its category – a real heavy-duty CNC router, which features super-fast 60m/min rapids, a cast Z-axis assembly for maximum rigidity, LED status indicator, X-axis bellow system to stop dirt/ dust ingress, powerful servo drives, the latest handheld colour controller, platform sizes include 8 x 4m, 3 x 2m, etc. The M1S also comes in auto-toolchange variants. “The enclosed CNC routing centres are something that Exel CNC pioneered in the UK over the last 10 years. It came first as a dealer requirement to have our machines go into schools (they needed the safety aspect), and were developed from there. “We have CNC machining centres that are enclosed, so why not CNC routers? It has several real benefits: it provides a physical

barrier for the operator, with its interlocked cabinet; it contains the dust and debris; and also reduces the noise impact. “The benefits are obvious for those customers seeking machines with limited room, clean environments, or who need them for secondary operations. We have customers with rows of these machines all nicely lined up. “Take our 1313M enclosed CNC router – it has a 4 x 4ft (1220 x 1220mm) working area, with a generous 305mm gantry clearance in the Z axis. Full servo machine, air-cooled

spindle, vacuum bed, auto-tool setter and much more, for only £13,995, ex -VAT – incredible value for such a machine,” says Mark. “We have a really good distributor network covering all industries – it is through our distributors that we implement a lot of improvements. We listen to what our customers want instead of just selling stock machines, and we offer tooling advice, production and fixturing assistance. The new series machines are already proving a big hit!” www.exelcnc.com

Great machines and top notch customer service see sales grow VWM is a woodworking machinery service and supply company with over 40 years of experience specialing in the supply and service of new CNC routers. The company delivers numerous benefits for its customers holding spare parts in stock for all its agencies and the valuable resource that comes with having time-served engineers with over 20 years experience in the industry. Many of VWM’s long-established agency relationships go back 20 years or more, thus the wealth of experience and VWM enjoys with them is second to none. Take Technos for instance, its impressive range of CNC machines has been developed with expertise from VWM – sales director, Jason Varey describes the relationship more as partnership than a simple agency arrangement. “We have a broad knowledge of CNC applications have worked with numerous composite industries building specialised machines for vehicle manufacture, aerospace components and many machines for the plastics and acrylic production – current projects include steel-based products and cement board manufacture.” Regarding training and on-going servicing, VWM’s engineers will leave a mobile contact number for the customer to call day or night (weekends as well) as the company believes this to be one of the key tenets of quality service back up. “As far as we’re concerned, our customer relationship goes far beyond the norm,” says Jason. 2020 has been challenging for many in the furniture and joinery industry – but VWM’s journey through the pandemic has been positive. “The Covid19 situation was obviously a surprise for everyone last spring – but we feel we quickly, we spoke with our customers and worked closely with them and our agencies, and our business grew by 20% during that time.” Looking ahead, Jason believes challenges lay ahead. “We think the main difficulties will be with manufacturers struggling with the parts supply chain, fortunately we made the decision to invest in additional stock and pre-ordered machines and parts so we do hold a good stock overall. “Moving forwards, indications are that the market will slow in the short term but remain optimistic for the coming year,” says Jason. In other news, Jason mentions a new, fully-automated CNC

arriving in May. “This looks like a fabulous machine with auto-load and off-load – and truly record-breaking price,” says Jason, “so this will be something to talk about in more detail later on. In addition, we are expanding our showroom space again and this should be up, and running by August – there’s always plenty going on at VWM. “Given the challenges of the pandemic, we can’t really complain about the past year as it’s been one of our best-performing periods in our history. We’re celebrating 40 years in 2021 and to coincide with this we have a new website and company video going live in April,” concludes Jason. 01282 870077 www.vwm.co.uk

A high-powered, 13kW, direct-drive five-axis head comes as standard

Holz-Her’s new Epicon – the wait is over This month sees the launch of Holz-Her’s all-new gantry console CNC, the Epicon 7235. Designed to offer medium-to-large stair, window, door and panel producers precise and repeatable results, the stateof-the-art CNC comes equipped with a wealth of solutions to address arduous tasks, reducing set-up times, costly downtime and demanding production schedules. Sitting on a rigid steel, plasma-cut base, the robust, gantry-style Epicon 7235 offers precise, heavy-duty milling on large workpieces up to 300mm high and 1660mm wide. To achieve this, the machine comes well-appointed with an impressive array of hardware. Included is a high-powered, 13kW, direct-drive five-axis head as standard, which, coupled with ceramic bearings and an extremely high holding force, works in

unison with the impressive vector speed (XYZ-axes) of 131m/min. It also comes equipped with a precision drill head with an infinitely variable speed of up to 6250rpm at full torque, an optional 18kW Pro-Torque electro-spindle for large diameter tooling on solid wood and, like all Holz-Her CNCs, it can be equipped with a variety of automatic toolchanging options for every configuration and application. When it comes to speedy set-up and effective material handling, the Epicon’s range of positioning systems, all with varying levels of automation, certainly deliver. A manual positioning table, with two laser pointers for the exact positioning of vacuum cups and display of workpiece contours, comes as standard. In addition, Holz-Her’s brand-new LED positioning table automatically identifies where the operator needs to place the

consoles and pods, and displays multiple cut positions in one go, without the need for manual adjustment. This simplifies the machining process further, and de-skills the operation. Taking the process a step further, Holz-Her’s SynchroDrive Table offers a fully automatic table with no manual intervention required – eliminating operator error completely. Every single console and suction cup is synchronised and driven into position independently and simultaneously, guaranteeing the super-fast, accurate positioning of every component. The state-of-the-art Epicon does not disappoint with its software offering, either. Configured for use on Windows 10, the newest addition to the Holz-Her portfolio comes with the latest Beckhoff Twin-Cat-3 extended automation technology control system, and is partnered with a CAMPUS/NC

HOPS V7 Plus open architecture software suite, which is compatible with all major software providers. This means users are not restricted to one particular software provider and can freely change providers at any time without compatibility issues. The new software package, which features improved 3D simulations, includes new pre-programmed macros for effective five-axis machining, and BetterSim materialremoval simulation that ensures collisionfree operation between the machine’s tools, non-cutting area and workpiece. It can also

be installed on several devices – which is great news for anyone also looking to use the Epicon’s new viaCockpit digitisation package. The viaCockpit software suite, designed by Weinig Group, remotely monitors the productivity and health of the machine, helping safeguard the investment and eliminate avoidable downtime. Constantly monitoring health and running hours, this Integrated 4.0 smart factory technology enables the user to oversee preventative maintenance, or spot irregularities in real-

time. It can even be fitted with a ChipControl Bluetooth spindle sensor, which alerts the user via the viaCockpit App and operator terminal if vibrations are reported due to unbalanced tools or broken cutters. Paul Nightingale, national sales manager for Holz-Her UK, says: “The launch of the Epicon 7235 addresses the age-old problem of laborious set-up times and preventable downtime, whilst offering reliable high performance and pin-point accuracy. “But a high-quality, repeatable, precise

finish is only achievable if your machine has been built to deliver. Our machines guarantee performance and longevity, and the Epicon is no exception. It has been built with directly driven drives – they don’t run though any belts – so you will not experience any loss of power. “It also includes pneumatic brakes at the front and rear of each console (many CNCs only have one), which guarantee a completely stable workpiece when machining. Steel dust covers also prevent the penetration of dust and dirt, which in turn protects the linear guides. “We’re so confident in this design, our linear guides are guaranteed for 10 years. And, as a way to ensure efficient and easy cleaning, the Epicon’s conveyor belt has been integrated into the frame, and isn’t sat at the front of the machine. “These features are easy to overlook when purchasing a CNC, but they extend the lifespan of the machine and, as a result, the cost of ownership is less over the machine’s lifetime than others on the market. The Epicon has been designed to offer a solution, and Holz-Her have delivered.” Due to the current restrictions and social distancing guidelines, Holz-Her is offering remote demonstrations of the Epicon 7235. Intelligent solutions from CAD+T International software developer CAD+T specialises in creating highly customisable software solutions for three-, four- and five-axis CNC machines and nesting. Working closely with leading machinery manufacturers and component specialists, CAD+T’s bespoke software solutions offer customers a highly adaptable and flexible approach to automated manufacturing. “CAD+T have always done things differently,” begins Martina Schwarz, international sales and marketing Manager at CAD+T. “We’ve never worked on the assumption that one software package could work effectively across the board. It’s simply not the case, and that’s why we’ve never offered software that centres around pre-programmed database systems. “Instead, we’ve remained focused on delivering fully customisable software solutions that depend entirely on the business, its production rates, the machinery and tools in place and the materials being used. “For us, it is also equally as important to understand the company’s plans for the future and short-, mid- and long-term goals. It is only by considering these factors that anyone can truly design an effective software solution in today’s market.” Offering the next generation in CNC software, CAD+T’s intelligent CAM interface separates components and automatically generates CNC data from the customer’s construction drawings. A database of milling strategies, machining parameters and tools generate the machine files needed to complete the job, which in turn creates a solution that does not require the programming or reorganising of CNC data.

Martina says: “This means timely manual programming and generic system inputting is a thing of the past, and the need for an experienced software programmer has been removed from the equation. This not only simplifies the manufacturing processes and streamlines production processes, but also improves efficiencies.” The software has been designed to optimise production processes and materials output, offering time saving benefits of around 60% per order and error prevention of up to 80%. One package can also be run on several CNC machines, saving time and money throughout the production cycle. Martina adds: “Our fully adaptable approach to software design allows us to analyse production processes and create flexible and efficient software packages that work around the most challenging requirements. When it comes to our CAM interface, it can guarantee perfect work-on results, a reduction in material waste and increased surface quality. So, whether you’re a joiner, shopfitter, interior designer, cabinetmaker or kitchen designer, we can create adaptable software solutions that reflect your business and workflow.” For more information on CAD+T and its complete range of CAD/ CAM software solutions for the furniture production and interior design markets, visit the company’s website. www.cadt-solutions.com

New year, new situation: Barry Casement, managing director of Interior Contracts (Kitchens) Ltd/ Lanzet – high quality kitchens supplier to the building and contracts market in Darwen, Lancashire. Confidence is everything in business, and despite the gloomy forecasts Mr Casement was more than confident on the future of Interior Contracts, so much that he decided to not only move his manufacturing facility to a larger and more ‘workable’ space, but also to make large capital investments to ensure a more efficient and productive manufacturing unit. With a long history of successful business with RW Machines and knowing their impressive portfolio of state-of-the-art equipment the choice on where to invest for Interior Contracts’ manufacturing future fell, once again, with the latest and well proven products supplied by RW. The first objective was to improve the costly and unproductive areas used for incoming boards and their storage, so Mr Casement and his staff were directed by RW to visit the Austrian company Barbaric, supplier of some of the most efficient and cutting edge storage systems available on the market and they had the chance to visit both small and large producers before

new opportunities

Above: the Anderson GS 510 Left: the Stema Tabit Opposite: Barbaric board storage system

placing the order for a Board Storage System specifically designed around their manufacturing requirements and set up, including the possibility to handle oversized worktops. Interior Contracts had converted early to the nesting process and realised that traditional nesting lines had benefits, but also restrictions with regards linear travel speeds, with 20/25m/min being the best achievable.

With the invaluable advice from RW Machines, they investigated the potential of the new Anderson GS linear drive CNCs and accepted this was the way forward to achieve routing speeds exceeding 50m/min, a very significant output increase, along with the added benefits of reduced running and maintenance costs. To improve further their already high value products, Interior Contracts eliminated the use of the cam and dowel construction, so

to achieve a ‘cleaner’ internal cabinet look; this was possible by installing a drilling and dowel inserting machine by the industry specialist Stema Srl. The Stema Tabit can not only drill and insert dowels but has the additional ability to rout push in top fix handles, a feature of today’s most impressive kitchen doors. The final piece of the puzzle was to eliminate the ‘bench time’ in cabinet building and Mr Casement chose to purchase the Closer, a fully automatic (infeed and outfeed) carcass press, from a well established and respected Italian manufacturer: Bonacin, a family business of second generation. Once again Interior Contracts moves forward with their long term partner RW Machines Ltd. 01869 244943 sales@rwmachines.co.uk www.rwmachines.co.uk

This machine enabled us to make more unique and difficult-to-manufacture products. In the long run, this has set us apart from our competitors and given us a clear advantage in the market

Now in its fifth generation of family ownership, Royal Warrant holder Stoneham Plc specialises in stylish, luxury kitchens. Its bespoke kitchens are custom designed to the client’s specification and built using the finest materials in its Sidcup based state-of-the-art manufacturing facility. “We’re passionate about our products,” explains works director, Mike Stoneham. He continues, “By combining traditional British craftsmanship with the latest manufacturing technologies we consistently deliver premier quality goods with meticulous attention-todetail. “In our minds, a vital part of business success is developing strong relationships with our suppliers. Homag is a case in point. We have invested in its equipment and software for over 40 years now, and the

service and support we get from them is excellent. “Our Homag area sales manager is Charles Smith, and a more genuine ‘nice guy’ you couldn’t wish to meet. His knowledge and experience of our business, the trade and, of course, Homag machinery and software, is beyond compare. He never tries the ‘hard sell’ approach and any advice he gives, you know has been painstakingly thought through.” The need to increase capacity “Over the years, we have invested in a lot of Homag equipment, from sanders and CNCs to edge banders and beam saws. We first acquired a CNC in the early 1980s, but it was in 2016 when we introduced one of the biggest game-changers to the business – the Venture BMG 5-axis CNC.

“This machine enabled us to make more unique and difficult-to-manufacture products. In the long run, this has set us apart from our competitors and given us a clear advantage in the market. “In 2019 we began looking at the necessary investments to take the company to the next level and increase our capacity further. Top of our list was an advanced CNC and so we began researching the market to see what was on offer. “Whilst there are several impressive machines out there, none offered us the complete package that Homag could. Probably the biggest difference was software. We have been using Homag’s woodWOP software for many years and have found it to be versatile and easy to use. Our experience with other manufacturers was mixed; either they relied on third-party >>

24

software or their own software just wasn’t as good as woodWOP. “Once we’d decided to go with Homag we sat down with Charles Smith and Homag’s CNC expert, Phil Pitchford, to map out the specification for the machine. As always, we were looking for a solution that would not only increase our existing production capacity, but would also future-proof the business by enabling us to produce new and innovative products.” Centateq P-210 CNC processing centre “Our deliberations led us to invest in a Homag Centateq P-210. Before making the final decision, however, we flew out to Germany to spend time with Homag’s engineers and see the machine in action. “This was really useful, but there is nothing quite like talking to an end-user and so Homag arranged for us to visit a customer who had been manufacturing with the Centateq for some time. Here we were able to talk directly not only with the business owners but also, more importantly, with the actual CNC operators. These guys who work on the machine day-in, day-out, tend to tell you what they think, warts and all. “The feedback from the trip was incredibly

The Centateq P-210 automatic tool changer offers Stoneham PLC speed, versatility and flexibility

positive and so we placed an order for the Centateq P-210. Other than the software and programming side of things, the big pluses for us were the machine’s capabilities. Our work demands a lot of tool changes and the P-210 has the facility for big drill blocks offering speed and versatility in both routing and drilling. This model is also slightly taller than our existing CNCs which surprisingly, perhaps, makes a big difference to its production capabilities. “The Centateq P-210 has delivered everything we were looking for and more. For example, we can now produce a solid MDF door in six minutes; previously, using a traditional ‘in-frame’ design, it took us much longer and required several different processes. Also, the P-210 has significantly reduced material wastage and, because a solid door doesn’t bow or twist, it has eliminated painting issues in the spray shop. “Since the Centateq P-210 was installed we have also ordered a Drillteq V-200 from Homag. This was required to increase our drilling capacity. We already have an original

BHX 055 vertical CNC. It is such an easy machine to use, there’s no set-up required; we have a barcode reader in front of it and it’s simply a case of point, shoot, load and drill. It was, therefore, an obvious decision to order another.” A true partnership “Everyone at Homag is extremely receptive, easy to get hold of and willing to help. Theirs is definitely a ‘can-do’ attitude; they are always thinking about long-term relationships, never the short-term fix to get them off the hook or sell a machine. “Naturally, as the global market leader, Homag is rarely going to be the least cost option. When it comes to value for money, however, no other brand comes close. Add to this the comprehensive back-up and service support you get from them, and we believe it makes an unbeatable package. “As the marketing suggests, Homag sells solutions, not machines. That is such a refreshing approach and one that ultimately builds trust,” concludes Mike Stoneham. 26 CNC MACHINERY, EQUIPMENT & SOFTWARE

In the wake of the near-catastrophic impact of the Covid pandemic, businesses generally will be looking for ways to reduce costs while maintaining quality and customer support. For the furniture manufacturing and general woodworking sectors, investment in a CNC router represents one the most versatile and cost-effective solutions to achieving these objectives, states AAG, which notes that, based on a price-to-performance ratio, a CNC router remains one of the most powerful and financially compelling capital equipment investments available. A global pioneering force in the advancement of CNC routing, cutting and engraving technology, AAG has, for the past 30 years, supplied some of the most technically advanced machines, many of which have attained virtual benchmark status. In the UK, these are available from AAG’s state-of-theart assembly and distribution centre in Telford, Shropshire.

Regenerating business growth with an AXYZ CNC router from AAG AAG’s pre-eminence in the CNC routing/cutting systems supply chain is largely attributable to the long-standing and robust business partnerships forged with its customers, many of which have used AAG continuously as their primary source of CNC machinery – based on build quality, reliability, and the raft of additional production-enhancing machine upgrades and wideranging customer support facilities available. Collectively, these are at the heart of everything AAG and its primary AXYZ power brand stands for. The latest AXYZ Infinite multi-purpose, large- and smallerformat Innovator CNC routing/cutting systems typically embody

all of these attributes, while providing complementary but distinctive price-to-performance capabilities. They are available in two different sizes and price points to accommodate every conceivable CNC machining requirement, and variable investment allocations. Apart from providing a staggering 366,918 different machine configurations, AXYZ routers can be supplied with a raft of both standard and optional machinine enhancements. These include the AXYZ ATC (Automatic Tool Change) system for work requiring multiple tools, and the AXYZ Auto Zone Management facility, which ensures the material being processed is held securely during the routing/cutting process to enable optimum accuracy and a superior routed/cut finish. These are supplemented by the latest AXYZ A2MC machine control system, that radically reduces the ‘bounce’ and vibration caused by sudden machine acceleration/deceleration that is frequently experienced with less technically advanced control systems, and the AXYZ AVS (AXYZ Vision System) camera-based facility for precise material registration and routing/cutting accuracy. Completing the range of production-enhancing upgrades is the latest AXYZ helical rack-and-pinion drive system. This incorporates a multiple-gear-teeth configuration that helps spread the workload more evenly, leading to faster material feed rates, quieter machine operation, less material wastage and ultimately a longer-than-normal machine life. All machines supplied by AAG are supported with ongoing technical support and comprehensive product training prior to and during machine installation. This can be conducted either at AAG’s facility in Telford or at the customer’s own premises. 01952 291600 www.axyz.co.uk

Quality machines, great service and excellent value as standard J & C O’Meara was established in 1990 by father and son team, Joseph and Carl, who had spent many years as service and installation engineers to the woodworking industry. This new formation was a natural progression and, for the first few years, the service was the mainstay of the business – followed by the purchasing and refurbishing of used machinery, and then the supply of new machinery. “Being an independent company and having the experience of a service background gives us the freedom to choose which companies we wish to work with, and to use our experience to make sure the products we adopt fulfil both our and our customers’ requirements,” explains Carl. “Qualifying products always need to conform to a set criteria in terms of build, specification, and of course the people behind the product. “In 2007 we launched our own range of sliding table panel saws marketed under the Genisis brand, which became an immediate success for those looking for a high-quality alternative to the premium brands. This led to the introduction of further machines to the Genisis range, to include the popular range of edgebanding machines. “Over the last 31 years, the company has always listened to what is required from their customers and have always taken the stance that if we have a suitable product to assist, then we will make an offer – if we don’t, then we will usually give a recommendation. “We are not a traditional sales-orientated company, rather a family-orientated company which offers good, honest advice, and a business which enjoys the benefits of loyal, longstanding customers and recommendations by them. “Today, the company has steadily evolved to encompass a complete range of CNC machines manufactured by the AES Group. Typically, before entering into an agreement to represent and introduce the AES products into the UK, we visited their factory in Bursa to see how the machines were produced, from the raw steel to the final product. We looked at the stage-by-stage production

to learn and give us a true feel for the machines,” says Carl. “We also spent time with the people at AES to get to know how they worked and how they responded, and to see if we could work with them over the long term. This was back in 2016, and today, with multiple installations throughout the UK, AES can easily be seen as not only a premium quality alternative to any of the other brands, but,

Top down: Sirius 95M Vega 3X Raptor Ultra 2132

as more than one of AES’ UK customers have described them, as ‘a performance bargain’. “For those not familiar with the AES brand, where some companies turn to value engineering, AES still produces its machinery without compromise. This can easily be seen in the weight of the machines, as all steelwork used on the frame is oversized, allowing linear positioning speeds of up to 90m/min. This strength of construction, coupled with the use of only the highest-quality branded parts such as HSD and Hiteco router heads, HSD

drill boxes, Becker vacuum pumps, THK linear guides and bearings, Yaskawa drives, etc, result in one heavy-duty, high-quality, accurate machine, built to give many years’ trouble-free service. AES use Alphacam as their preferred CAD/CAM solution which, being machineneutral, means customers are not tied into a particular manufacturer’s home-grown software. “As part of our service pack for the AES machines, J & C O’Meara provides predelivery training so a customer is ready for delivery and is not bombarded with too much information on the day. “We also always have the manufacturer carry out the installation, so every machine is installed, commissioned and fully calibrated from day one. With AES we are offering a unique long-term service pack which includes free lifetime remote technical support for all their machines, along with fixed-price servicing. We believe owning a CNC should be fully supported and should also be a long-term, cost-effective investment,” says Carl. “Recent installations have been wide and varied, showing just how diverse the AES range is, and have included the CNC drilling machines and CNC nesting machines – some being ‘standalone’, some being throughfeed, and some being for combined joinery and nesting. There have also been a number of pod-and-rail-style door processing machines installed, being equipped with a dedicated horizontal router head for the fast and accurate machining of locks and hinges. “Having had one of our busiest years despite the pandemic, we have seen an increase in both sales and enquiries for the AES machines, where it appears a lot more manufacturers are looking more towards automation, and of course we invite anyone to talk to us to see if we can assist. “In other news, we will shortly be opening a new facility, where we will have on display a greater range of CNC machinery, as well as our traditional ranges of machinery” concludes Carl. 01704 893109 www.ukwoodworkingmachinery.co.uk

The benefits of CNC routers HPC Laser is a leading UK supplier of laser-engraving and cutting machines, and CNC routers. The West Yorkshire firm has supplied over 5000 machines to signmaking, education, trophy engravers and a wide range of other industrial and private customers, for an almost-infinite array of applications. In this article, HPC Laser director Steve Cockerham provides an introduction to CNC routers ... What are CNC routers? A CNC router is a Computer Numerical Controlled machine that uses computer programming to control a high-speed rotating cutter to perform cutting and shaping operations. A broad variety of materials can be cut by these machines, including (but not limited to) plastics, woods, carbon fibre, and light metals such as aluminium. They are most frequently used for 2D cutting on flat materials. Using programmed toolpaths which are derived from a vector drawing, a controller instructs the machine to move the toolhead along its X and Y axes. However, with a fully programmable Z-axis and suitable design file and controller, they are equally capable of machining elaborate 3D profiles and designs into the same wide range of materials. Technological development The progression of CNC technology has been radical, particularly when it comes to travel speeds and positional accuracy. Automated toolchange options and features for automated operation and software integration have also excelled. Recent developments in machine features mean that customers can now purchase a costeffective, tailor-made machine, configured to suit their exact needs and expectations, faster than ever before. Routers are available in a range of sizes, from small desktop machines to industrial

machines capable of quickly processing very large and thick materials, making them a time-efficient and cost-effective solution to accurately processing materials. Industry applications include signmaking, furnituremaking, education, aerospace, automotive, electronics, engineering, set design and exhibitions. Multi-purpose A major benefit of the router is being able to cut and engrave without the need for an alternate tool. The repeatability of shaping material enables you to cut materials precisely and as many times times as needed. Thus, frequency of error and wastage are reduced. Efficiency These machines can be used with just one operator, which cuts labour costs. Furthermore, the general operating speed is up to 25,000rpm, and the toolhead

can move quickly along the X and Y axes. This means materials are processed at an exceptionally high rate. These factors make the machine extremely cost effective after the initial investment. The cutting tool is usually made of carbon steel, high-speed steel (HSS) or solid carbide. This ensures that very dense materials can be machined. Adjustable tool height allows thick materials to be cut without requiring higher power – unlike a laser-cutting machine, which is limited by the useful length of the focused laser prior to it diverging and weakening. Easy to use CNC routers generally receive their toolpath

instructions from a piece of intermediate software, like Vectric Cut2Dpro. Yet, programmers can continue to use their drawing package of choice. Programming and operating the machine is relatively simple providing training has been undertaken. Safe to use Although CNC routers create significantly fewer fumes than many other means of shaping, such as laser engraving, they can create large amounts of chippings and dust during the cutting process. However, CNC machines are usually fitted with a dustextraction system comprising of an extractor fan and filter. This minimises the amount of dust leaving the bed to the surrounding environment. Some machines can be fitted with vacuum beds that suck non-porous material down onto the bed, usually without the need for additional mechanical workholding. However, it is important to note that as the materials cut away, the holdingdown force of the vacuum weakens. Some CNC routers have zone valves in order to concentrate the vacuum on the most appropriate section of the bed. Routers are very safe to use providing training is undertaken and appropriate PPE is worn. Additional features such as protective enclosures can also be added as a further safety measure. This housing provides maximum operator safety, whilst enabling viewing from all sides – ideal for schools, colleges and other educational facilities. These advances have poisited the CNC router as a key machining tool in several industries, such as woodworking, panel processing, furnituremaking and signage. CNC router technology leaves little need for modern machines to advance more. Indeed, it almost feels as though we have reached the pinnacle of innovation in CNC router development, as it is difficult to imagine what significant developments could be next. www.hpclaser.co.uk

Masterwood CNC upgrade – one year on

Edwards and Hampson purchased their first CNC from Masterwood – a four-axis Project 400L – in 2008. After 12 years’ production on all types of general joinery, the decision was made to take advantage of Masterwood GB’s trade-in offer and get a new, advanced model with a discount, in exchange for the old CNC. Edwards and Hampson’s director, Arran Jordan, says: “We already had a good working relationship with the staff and engineers at Masterwood GB and it never entered into our mind to change suppliers and go with a different brand of machine.”

34 CNC MACHINERY, EQUIPMENT & SOFTWARE

The new Project 351L was delivered from Italy and installed in February 2020, along with a new specialist stair software package. “The removal of the existing machine and installation of the new one was seamless,” explains Arran. “Initially we had some minor problems, but these were effortlessly resolved by the Masterwood engineer, who stayed late into the evening with members of staff to make sure they were fully trained.” The new Project 351L was supplied as a four-axis CNC with aggregate heads and a dual-exit, direct drive, horizontal router, plus pneumatic clamps to give variations on the standard vacuum pod clamping system. The gantry bed gives a 5200 x 1550mm working area, allowing components up to 1300mm wide to be fully machined. The machine was backed up by Masterwood’s own CAD/CAM and 3D software. Unlike the previous CNC, the addition of a built-in waste conveyer proved to be a worthwhile extra. “A big factor of the new machine is how much easier it is to clean and maintain,” says Arran, “saving time which would otherwise have been wasted.” Along with the CNC, Edwards and Hampson opted for the specialist StairBiz software through Masterwood. The new package is fully compatible with the entire Masterwood CNC range, and supplies the TLF files that allow full 3D viewing and editing of any programmes at the machine. Within the stair designs, just about any shape can be produced, including angles, curves and different directions. “The

software has allowed us to streamline and automate the sales, design and manufacturing process, allowing us to save time and money,” says Arran. Edwards and Hampson was fortunate to have the CNC delivered and fully installed just weeks before the country entered the first lockdown in March 2020 – a testing time for any business, but particularly so after such a large investment. Concluding, Arran says: “If we had not had the new machine before the shutdown,

trying to operate during the pandemic with an ageing machine could have been a disaster. Due to the increased demand we are seeing, having our old machine would have seen us unable to satisfy customer demand.” To find out more information on new and used Masterwood CNC machinery, including trade-in offers, contact Masterwood GB. 01293 402700 office@masterwoodgb.co.uk www.masterwoodgb.co.uk

Get into the groove with Lamello Robert Timmons has a passion for furniture design and a unique ability to understand the engineering elements that transform a design into a reality. A Cabinet Maker by trade, Robert founded Robert Timmons Furniture in 2003 and, over the last 17 years, he has become a recognised name in the furniture industry with a reputation for designing and manufacturing high-end, bespoke kitchens and furniture in partnership with prestigious architects and designers. His flexible approach to luxury furniture design and infectious creative flare have enabled Robert to carve out a long-standing relationship with Swiss joining specialist, Lamello, as he continues to push the boundaries of design with Lamello’s seamless fixings and CNC connector range. “I bought my first Zeta when it first launched in 2010 and my infatuation with Lamello’s fixings has grown from there,” begins Robert. “Our business is about finding solutions and delivering furniture that is completely

unique. Every element of our design is unique and because of this, we give our customers complete design freedom.” Whilst it’s an architect’s job to create the look and feel of a space, it’s Robert and his team who are tasked with fully understanding the intricacies around the concept that will inevitably make the design functional. Robert says: “This is where Lamello comes into its own. For over a decade, we’ve been using Lamello’s hand fixings because they offer us serious flexibility. Their fixings are completely concealed and allow us to make completely seamless joins with exceptional strength and durability that are also quick and convenient for on-site assembly. Clamex, Tenso and Divario fixings have helped us overcome some seriously challenging designs in some challenging spaces that simply wouldn’t have been achievable without the versatility Lamello’s fixings give us.” In a move that has seen the Greenwich and Deptford-based company switch from outsourcing elements of machining to

manufacturing complete projects in-house, Robert has invested in a Holz-Her Evolution 7405 Connect CNC, a Holz-Her Streamer 1054 edgebander and a Striebig Compact vertical panel saw. “Until recently, we’d often prepare doors and drill hinge holes on our drill press, outsourcing other work where we could. It was labour intensive, required a degree of skill and there was always a risk of human error. Now, with three new machines in place, intelligent optimisation software incorporated into the production and QR codes clearly directing the operator through the different production stages, a relatively inexperienced cabinet maker can successfully use the equipment to cut and drill panels accurately and create beautifully finished panels quickly and effectively.” These changes have also seen the integration of Lamello’s CNC connectors into the company’s machining processes. The Evolution 7405, which was the first machine in the Holz-Her range to be P-System ready, offered Robert vertical CNC machining in a

compact format. Whilst considerably smaller than a horizontal flat-bed CNC, the Evolution has the ability to machine a panel on all four edges. “Lamello’s CNC offering made the Evolution more attractive as a tool for our workshop,” admits Robert. “To be able to get four sides of the board completely square, routed and ready for edgebanding was a huge advantage for us. We can now process each piece single-handedly and speed up production considerably.” Teamed with SWOOD Design, a complete CAD software suite that is fully integrated into SolidWorks (pictured bottom right), Lamello’s CNC connectors were easily integrated into Robert’s production. Using Holz-Her’s unique automatic tool changer, which rotates the tool to create the Clamex-P pocket on all four edges and ultimately facilitates the Lamello fixings, the software automatically positions the depth and thickness of the connection according to parametrically-defined rules from a fully-customisable fitting library. Robert says: “The relationship between the CNC, software and Lamello’s connectors is seamless and has simplified the whole P-System cutting process. It is easy to insert different connectors into our designs using a simple drag and drop function, it’s quick to edit the parametric rules if required and the CNC machines the panel, ready for the fixings to be

Holz-Her provides a complete and extremely efficient solution for customers looking to benefit from Lamello’s P-System

inserted and the furniture to be assembled onsite. It’s a perfect three-way partnership and, thanks to the software’s 3D modelling of the whole process, it’s a great sales tool.” Robert adds, “We now use Lamello’s fixings on every project we work on and since it has been integrated into our machining processes, it’s offered us a simple, fast and strong drilling and insertion process with huge time-saving benefits. Aside from this, for me, it’s the

versatility of the product that adds value and sets it apart. There really isn’t anything better on the market and the quality of the finished product speaks for itself. It’s because of this that Lamello is our connector specialist of choice.” For more information on the Lamello P-System visit the Lamello website, and to book a demonstration on a Holz-Her CNC, telephone 01235 557600. www.lamello.co.uk

‘The new controls, drives, guarding, access panels and doors, along with simpler, faster and more reliable electromechanical parts, make running these Maka machines easier, more flexible, safer and faster’ <<

“Clearly, this is no ordinary woodworking machine,” says Iain. “The new controls, drives, guarding, access panels and doors, along with simpler, faster and more reliable electro-mechanical parts, make running these Maka machines easier, more flexible, safer and faster. “Today’s generation of Makas are even stronger, more precise, and faster. The five-axis heads feature Galaxie drives, providing faster five-axis moves, with twice the clamping force, making this machine cut deeper and quicker. Larger tools may also be used, including 400mm diameter saws and moulder-style cutting blocks. “The PM-Modular’s control system, and the inherent precision of Maka’s mechanics, makes it possible to go from screento-machine reliably, so products can be made right, first time. The user will further benefit from longer tool life, and improved operations downstream including finishing and assembly. “Along with lower maintenance costs and maximum uptime, this Maka will improve any joinery manufacturer’s bottom line,” concludes Iain. 01952 607700/07836 295435 iain.young@makaUK.com www.maka.com
