Comment So the ‘awesome foursome’ (the UK) has a new PM, Mr Boris Johnson, our self-annointed dude of a leader is showing a robust and determined commitment to achieve Brexit by October 31st. From a business perspective, I believe many readers will agree that the UK needs to meet this crucial deadline with a respectable deal, we cannot countenance further delays, let alone a no-deal scenario. I wish him good luck. With consumer confidence running low, the UK and Europe needs a benign and productive trading scenario with as few barriers to trade as possible. Intriguingly, Mr Johnson speaks of taking advantage of Brexit ‘because that is the course on which this country is set’ and he says that he will speed up preparations for the months ahead, saying ‘the ports will be ready, and the banks will be ready ,and the factories will be ready, and business will ready!’ Impressive ambitions all, but many analysts counsel that business, particularly the SMEs, are mostly ill-equipped for no-deal and could well be caught off-guard as they stand today – I believe the threat of a no-deal option is a red herring to focus European minds. Focusing on the furniture and joinery sector, The Furniture Industry Research Association has published a helpful guide: ‘Brexit – the importance of planning ahead’. Whilst the information is applicable to all across the furniture sector, it should be of particular use to SMEs that may not have resources to secure key information independently. A worthy read for those who cannot muster the funds for on-going stockpiling. Elsewhere in this issue, we have a strong feature on Edgebanding Materials & Equipment, the ever-popular Installations articles, other features on Fittings & Components plus Saws, Blades & Cutting Technology. And finally, for those of you still unfamiliar with Connect, our trade directory, in printed from and online form, I urge all readers, whether suppliers or manufactures, to register and take advantage of the multifarious industry connections you can readily make within your industry.

Regulations update imminent, says minister The furniture industry can expect an update to the Furniture & Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988 “imminently”, according to Ms Kelly Tolhurst MP, Parliamentary UnderSecretary for the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). Ms Tolhurst made the statement at the annual Confederation Lunch, organised by the British Furniture Confederation (BFC) and The Furniture Makers’ Company, which took place in May at the Palace of Westminster – although to date no announcement has yet been made. Around 70 senior level employees from companies representing the domestic and contract furniture trade attended the event which provides industry the opportunity to hear firsthand from Government and communicate issues. The BFC is a strong supporter of fire safety in the form of the Furniture & Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988, as amended, but has long been concerned that the regulations have not been updated in the 30 years since they were first introduced. Since 1988, the industry has seen huge changes, not only in materials and processes, but also to the risks within the home environment. The industry has been seeking a full revision of the regulations since 2008 and has fully co-operated with the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy in its efforts to reform the legislation. Speaking to delegates at the Confederation Lunch, Ms Tolhurst said: “I recognise the need to update the regulations to respond to developments in furniture design, innovation and manufacturing process, and the environmental and health concerns that have widely been spoken of. My priority is to maintain product fire safety protections. Consumers need to have confidence that products in their homes are produced to rigorous safety requirements. “Updating those regulations is complex and it has required careful consideration of evidence

Maggie Throup, MP and chair of the All Party Parliamentary Furniture and Interiors Group, with Kelly Tolhurst and Dids Macdonald, Master of the Furniture Makers’ Company at the furniture industry Confederation Lunch, Palace of Westminster

and close engagement with diverse stakeholders to ensure we find the right way forward. I am pleased to be able to tell you that I will be publishing the Government’s response to the 2016 consultation, setting out the way forward, imminently.” The chairman of the BFC, Jonathan Hindle, commented: “For the past decade, the industry has been seeking a revision of the regulations so they are fit for modern purpose and has been cooperating fully with the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. The BFC has worked tirelessly on this issue and we welcome the news of an imminent response. “The BFC is and always has been committed to maintaining high levels of fire safety in the home, and has constantly encouraged meaningful consultation on current regulations. This has been to ensure that environmental concerns are met, as well as updating the regulations to reflect modern materials and manufacturing techniques.” During her speech, Ms Tolhurst also spoke of new funding measures the Government had implemented to support companies, innovators and entrepreneurs, including

investing up to £120m in the Made Smarter Digital Manufacturing Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund, to ensure the UK remains at the forefront of the fourth industrial revolution, and providing £20m to the Made Smarter North West Pilot, which will support up to 3000 SME manufacturers. Also in attendance at the Confederation Lunch was Ms Maggie Throup MP, chair of the All Party Parliamentary Furniture Industry Group (APPFIG), who updated delegates on the efforts that have been made to raise awareness of the industry, which included a Westminster Hall debate back in January 2019. Ms Throup also spoke about the challenges and opportunities of Brexit. Speaking about Brexit, Ms Throup said: “I know that the Government is listening to industry, including those SMEs who have voiced concerns, specifically with regards to standards and regulation once the UK leaves the European Union. These are issues that do need to be addressed to both ensure we do not see an erosion of manufacturing standards and more importantly to protect the British public from foreign imported furniture that may not meet the same high standards as we manufacture here in the UK.”

Replace plastic pallet wrap with eco-friendly sugar cane bio film The team at employee-owned business, Kite Packaging, continues with its environmental drive by developing and introducing a new machine bio film produced from sugar cane, the greenest material on the market. Kite’s new and revolutionary machine stretch film offers a more environmental alternative to traditional plastic stretch wrap, providing businesses with an effective, more eco-friendly alternative to secure pallets without compromising on protection. With its high performance material, this carbon neutralising innovation offers quality load retention for palletised goods without using traditional oil-based plastic wrap. Businesses that make the switch to a sugar cane based bio film like this will be able to significantly improve their environmental operations. Sugar cane is one of the greenest materials on the market, thanks to its 100% recyclable green polyethylene material, whilst still upholding the same characteristics, quality and properties as the oil equivalent. During the production process of sugar cane, CO2 is removed from the atmosphere, whereas standard oil based polythene, the usual material used for traditional pallet wrap, releases CO2 into the atmosphere. The carbon neutral production process of Kite’s new sugar cane based bio film makes it a must have for businesses who require a high performance film that is better for the environment. Kite’s new sugar cane pallet wrap comes as Kite’s 120-tonne plastic reduction 2019 challenge bypasses the business’s goal for the year and stands at over 130 tonnes in six months. www.kitepackaging.co.uk

Timber doors supplier honours Carbon Neutral accreditation As part of its ongoing carbon neutral accreditation, XL Joinery, a leading supplier of doors and associated products, is supporting a variety of initiatives overseas, which will aid both the planet, as well as the local workers. The first scheme receiving support from the renown West Yorkshire door supplier, titled the Portel-Para Deforestation Project, prevents the loss of native forests in the Amazon. With plans to avert over 22 million tonnes of carbon emissions over the next 40 years, the initiative also employs and trains local villagers to monitor and conserve the timber reserves. This means that the scheme not only enables

the deforestation project to be closely monitored but also provides work for the local residents. Another contribution XL Joinery support is to the Mariposas Hydroelectric Power Project in Chile’s Talca province. This organisation recycles dirty water to generate electricity, replacing traditional coal or gas. Once again offering a skill and employment to local people with hefty annual CO2 emission reductions. In addition to the overseas projects, XL Joinery is continuing to instil carbon footprint-reducing schemes closer to home. In its warehouse, 550 skylights are being replaced to provide natural daylight, as well as transitioning to electric

vehicles on the warehouse floor. Other energysaving measures are taking place throughout XL’s headquarters in a bid to reduce its carbon footprint, from production to delivery. David Crossley, continuous improvement manager at XL Joinery, comments: “We are so proud to be supporting these schemes that not only benefit the environment but also people living in smaller communities. As a committed organisation, we hold sustainability at the forefront of our business and we will continue to pave the way for sustainable business practices in the future.” www.xljoinery.co.uk

First signals for Xylexpo 2020 – introducing Focus Components With Xylexpo appearing on the horizon, the international showcase for wood and furniture technologies and supplies will now be running for four days, from Tuesday 26th to Friday 29th May 2020, instead of five. This change has been welcomed by the industry, as witnessed by early registrations which are somewhat better than previously, a signal that the renewed commitment of the biennial exhibition is being recognised. Many of the industry’s big players have already submitted their application forms: Biesse, Cefla, Homag, IMA, SCM and Weinig are leading the group of companies that will attend the exhibition in Milan next May. “We really feel that our determination to reaffirm the exhibition’s role has been readily recognised,” says Lorenzo Primultini, president

of Xylexpo. “The decision of many companies to come to Milan witnesses to the effectiveness of an exhibition that we want to focus more and more on the quality of the solutions on display, on the most advanced technologies, on real integrated systems. Xylexpo will show the woodworking business and furniture production under a new light, following the momentous change of Industry 4.0.” After the new calendar and the new logo, the third item of news is the debut of Focus Components, an area dedicated to supplies, components and semi-finished materials for the furniture industry. “This is a sector of the business dominated by excellent exhibitions,” Lorenzo adds, “but we believe that in Milan, in a totally different

setting and in close synergy with technology, this business can find new and different opportunities.” The new format is a collaboration with Made Expo, that will contribute not only with their experience and close relationship with architecture and construction players, but also with the common language shared with many companies and big industry players. The project will revolve around the option for exhibitors to have a dedicated area, choosing the most effective option. “We do not want to run after records or to venture into new territories where we don’t belong, but we want to respond to those who have always appreciated the opportunity to find materials and technologies in one place,” concludes Lorenzo. www.xylexpo.com

London Plane trees showcased in modernist wild craft furniture collection The London Plane Project by Heliconia Furniture is a comprehensive exploration of a tree species that is at once both ubiquitous in most European cities and completely underutilised as a timber. Restricting his palate to one tree species, the Heliconia designer-maker Christopher Burley has created Drift, a small collection of wild craft furniture with modernist stylings. Along with an illustration of the processes and techniques, the final collection of tables, seating and objects will be displayed at September’s London Design Fair.

FP310_Pages.indd 10

Chris says: “Over the last two years I have become fascinated by this ubiquitous London tree, sucking up our pollution and dulling the noise – doing everything for us when alive but remaining underused as a furniture timber. I have explored this specific tree species to discover its versatilities and possibilities and have had a lot of fun doing it. “By applying different techniques to produce a variety of tones, textures and forms, I have encountered its young pale tones and the old tea orange brown and everything in between. I have steam-bent it, laminated it, burnt it, ebonised

it, bleached it, carved it, gouged it, scraped it, wire-brushed it, made dovetail joints, fox tenons, finger joints and lap joints and dowels. This fascinating wood can reveal yet more character depending on how it has been cut when converted from a tree into timber.” Chris first became interested in the possibilities of the tree species after being immersed in a major timber re-use commission for a large residential developer in 2016, making furniture pieces from the London Plane trees felled on site. The final designs of the Drift collection have a modernist styling with very simple lines and jointing to illustrate the visual versatility of London Plane and power of the Lacewood grain figure. www.heliconia-furniture.co.uk/the-londonPlane-project

Kite Packaging expands its silica gel offering The UK-based packaging supplier has now enhanced its product offering by introducing self-indicating silica gel to the alreadyextensive range at Kite. Ideal for applications where long term use is required and offering the same benefits as silica gel in terms of its properties, this indicating silica gel offers an extra benefit by indicating when moisture is present. The initial colour of the gel is orange and if it stays as this, then airtight seals have not been breached, however, if it has turned green this indicates that moisture is present within. This indicating silica gel is extremely useful when dealing with items in which it is critical that moisture does not get in due to it jeopardising the quality such as, pharmaceuticals and electrical components. Another key benefit of the product is that it can in fact be re-used – once the bag is saturated it can be dried out and the colour will change back to orange, ready for re-use. This product is commonly used in industries such as pharmaceuticals, electronics, hydraulic systems and tool and seed storage, indicating silica gel is an effective way of detecting when moisture is present and an airtight environment is breached. www.kitepackaging.co.uk.

James Latham searches for design superstars James Latham has launched a competition across its social media platforms to celebrate the best projects and examples of design which have been created using its high-quality timber or decorative products.

Using the hashtag #LathamsDesign2019, the competition is inviting designers, architects, joiners, furniture makers – indeed anyone who uses its products – to share their images. The competition, which runs throughout the UK and Ireland, launched in early July and will continue through until 30th September. Selected images will be shown across Latham’s various social media platforms and the winning entry will receive a £500 voucher for Artist Residence, the eccentric boutique hotel group, with venues situated in Brighton, London, Oxfordshire, Penzance and Bristol. Group head of marketing Stuart Devoil says: “We are constantly amazed by the high-quality, end-products created by our customers who are designers, joiners, woodworkers, landscape designers,

architects, and much more. We know there are some world-class design and craft skills out there, but too often, we don’t get to see where our products and materials end up and what they turn into. “We really want to encourage people to share more pictures of their work which showcase their skills, so creating a summer photo competition was the perfect opportunity to do this.” Using the hashtag #LathamsDesign2019 and tagging Latham’s, anyone wishing to enter can post images on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook using @lathamsltd or via LinkedIn using @james-latham. Entrants are advised to read the full T&Cs before entering which can be found on the company’s website. www.lathamtimber.co.uk

New Hi-Macs Intense Ultra Following the recent launch of the HiMacs Strato collection, the company is now introducing Hi-Macs Intense Ultra, described by the company as a revolution for the solid surface market which opens new possibilities for surface design. Intense is a new material formulation which it says gives a remarkable performance. The product range combines the characteristics from two disparate worlds: intense colour technology and ultra-thermoforming. Dark colours become more intense, darker and also more resistant, with less visible scratches. The new formulation allows for colour consistency during and after

FP310_Pages.indd 14

fabrication, maintaining the dark colour when worked, producing less sanding dust and leaving fewer sanding marks on the surface and edges. The new Hi-Macs Intense Ultra, also has excellent thermoforming capabilities. The new formula allows the material to reach a very small internal radius, up to 6mm, with almost no whitening effect even when using dark colours. Sharp curves and dramatic designs in darker tones that were once out of reach for solid surface materials, are now made possible with Hi-Macs. Hi-Macs Intense Ultra is available from September 2019 in the following colours: Black, Dark Grey and Grey. www.himacs.eu

www.furnitureproduction.net

For many years, the national media has focused on the issue of workplace productivity, as UK manufacturing businesses struggle to find ways to match and exceed the performance levels seen from their global competitors.

Could personal development solve the productivity puzzle? According to Government data, over the last decade the UK’s labour productivity growth rate fell to a level lower than at any time during the 20th century, with little indication that matters will improve in the immediate future. With the UK currently ranked behind many of its European counterparts, workplace productivity is an issue that urgently needs addressing, especially as Brexit uncertainty continues to build. The UK’s productivity puzzle Measured by the amount of work produced per working hour, productivity is the main driver of long-term economic growth and higher living standards. According to data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), the UK has achieved productivity growth of just 2% in the last decade, a rate that was previously managed every year. Widely referred to as the UK’s productivity puzzle, the statistics support the idea that despite more people being employed, organisations still face an uphill battle when it comes to improving business output. In theory, recruiting more workers or increasing working hours could help solve the longstanding problem. However in practice it is having the opposite effect, as more people seem to be entering unproductive jobs. Simple solution With the issue of workplace productivity intensifying, businesses are beginning to take drastic measures to improve the situation. Although investing in state-of-the-art technology can be a positive and necessary move, many organisations are spending a lot of money in a bid to make processes more efficient. However, new research suggests that the answer could be much simpler and cheaper by comparison, as businesses fail to capitalise on their existing workforce, underestimating the importance of personal development.

FP310_Pages.indd 16

Rather than replacing workers with technology or expanding the existing workforce, improvements can be made by providing focused training for individuals, giving them the skills needed to successfully complete high payoff activities. Nurturing the talent within Not only will personal development enhance workplace productivity, but it will also reduce the need for businesses to recruit talent from elsewhere, saving significant time and money. While some organisations attempt to solve the productivity puzzle by bringing in experienced leaders to oversee daily operations, others recognise the potential in their existing workforce. For many years, there has been a false perception that productivity can be improved by simply working longer hours. However some of the most productive nations in the world have a shorter average working week than the UK. Instead, it is important to discover the strengths of your existing team, using your workforce effectively to accomplish tasks. Inspiring new leaders For those organisations looking to boost their workplace productivity, there are programmes designed to teach people how to use their time and talent effectively. Refined and improved over time, these courses help individuals understand the true power of goal setting, teaching important communication, time management and delegation skills, all of which are vital to operating within a highly productive team. Other programmes focus on the strategic side of personal development, recognising the need for clear-thinking leaders, who can create effective business strategies. Helping workers become strategic leaders is crucial to long-term business growth, as they begin to optimise internal structures and enhance productivity using newly-learnt skills.

Proactivity is key While training your team and inspiring a new wave of leaders is a major part of the journey, businesses must recognise the importance of being proactive, looking for new ways to improve standards over time. In recent years, psychometric assessments have become increasingly popular, allowing organisations to uncover the personalities and motivations of new and existing workers. Typically used during the recruitment process, these assessments allow businesses to clearly judge potential candidates, gaining a better understanding of whether an individual will fit the culture of the organisation. Psychometric assessments can also be used within existing teams to identify strengths and weaknesses, showing businesses how to enhance productivity by utilising the talent at their disposal.

W

Embracing a culture of development The UK’s productivity puzzle has left manufacturing organisations scratching their heads, as they continue to search for ways to improve the situation. While expanding the existing workforce or investing in the latest technology may help soften the blow, these solutions tend to cost a significant amount of money and are not sustainable long-term. For those businesses looking to capitalise on their existing workforce, consult an experienced team of coaches and research the development opportunities available.

Nick Howes is the managing director at Leadership Management International UK, a global organisation, committed to delivering bespoke personal development programmes to businesses of all sizes.

Rycotewood furniture students create storage solutions in American red oak Rycotewood Furniture at the City of Oxford College, which runs one of the UK’s most respected furniture-making programmes, has collaborated with the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) for the second year to produce a series of storage pieces using American red oak. AHEC tasked 17 of the school’s second year Foundation students with a brief to create a piece of storage out of two boards of red oak. The students were told to use the material as creatively and efficiently as possible, making the most of its natural characteristics. Each student was also asked to think of an inspirational architect or artist to influence their piece. Students used a variety of techniques including scorching, staining, wire-brushing, fuming and steam-bending to reveal the texture of the soft-grained timber or change its colour or shape. Renowned British furniture designer Sebastian Cox was a guest tutor for the project and spoke to the students at the beginning of the project, giving an insight into his own business and inspiring them with work he has created using red oak. Sebastian continued to oversee the project and mentor the students, giving each student three individual sessions to advise on their pieces and critique their ideas.

FP310_Pages.indd 18

“Courses like these are an essential part of the make-up of a university education. A lot of product design courses have workshop access but not proper craft training and that misses something in terms of getting a deep knowledge of how to make a piece and how to read a material,” says Sebastian. “What’s special about Rycotewood is that they really teach that in-depth exploration of working with wood and I think that is essential for anyone who wants to work in design. “It is great to see a course that is craft-based setting a brief which has a narrative angle on it. That is just as important as teaching craft processes. Those students need to leave university equipped with the ability to take a concept and turn that into a product.” Course tutor Joseph Bray says: “At Rycotewood we love to collaborate on projects to bring them to life. Working with red oak provided by AHEC and tutorial input from Sebastian Cox has proved to be inspirational for our students.” Tom Acland has created a wall-mounted drinks cabinet with end grain panelled doors, two inside drawers and shelf space. The mesmerising piece is beautifully patterned, with a fabric-like appearance from a distance. Nick Wright’s red oak and jesmonite jewellery storage cabinet was inspired by British sculptor Rachel Whiteread. The cabinet is internally lined with mint-green suede and equipped with in-built lighting, special Japanese hinges, two concealed dovetailed drawers and a secret compartment. Alec Brown stained the red oak black to create an interesting table top storage piece. The piece has gilding behind the handles and along the drawer slides which is revealed when the drawer is opened. Jenna Eve’s round-cornered blanket chest features felted wool in between the joints. Jamie Waite designed a wall-hanging shelf with sliding fabric doors.

The versatility of the red oak and ingenuity of students is highlighted by the breadth of projects created. Other projects created by the Rycotewood students include a contemporary reimagining of a Māori Wakahuia (feather box), a mobile planter with steam bent components which join to form a screen, a gentleman’s valet chair and a bedside cabinet with balancing legs. David Venables, AHEC’s European director, says: “Collaborating with Rycotewood is a great opportunity to expose gifted students to a great looking but underused sustainable material and encourage them to experiment with it.” “American red oak represents almost 20% of the natural hardwood forests of the US and its volume has more than doubled in the last 50 years. Although this beautiful timber is well regarded in other markets, it is still underutilised in Europe. “This collaboration with Rycotewood is part of our wider effort to encourage European designers and makers to move away from using only a few fashionable species and instead use all the species nature provides in order to contribute to a sustainable use of the forests.” www.cityofoxford.ac.uk/our-courses/ furniture www.americanhardwood.org/en/americanhardwood/american-red-oak?species=31

Renolit’s impressive Halifax oak is an ideal choice for 3D

Key products innovations in design and texture PET-based laminates with 2D and 3D designs, are now available from Renolit in both highgloss and super-matt finishes. “The level of shine on the high gloss version resembles a polished lacquered surface and gives the colour a depth like behind a pane of glass,” says Thomas Tossmann, head of Renolit Design, describing the visual effect. To touch, its feel is just as authentic: the highgloss surface is just as smooth as it looks – it is endlessly smooth, even when lightly rubbed. And the super-matt textured product feels emphatically flat, with visual and tactile appeal in equal measure. PET laminates combine their qualities with excellent formability and durability. They are scratch-resistant, fingerprint resistant and easy to clean. These material properties make it possible to create furniture fronts and caravan interiors which can withstand bumps, whilst retaining their beautiful finish for a long time. Renolit PET Laminate 2D and 3D designs are both available from stock. New chapter in lightweight construction The company is launching a new chapter with innovative core materials Renolit Gorcell Veneerflex and Renolit Gorcell Superflex. These materials are extremely light and rigid, with less than half the density of balsa wood. They are also flexible, can be formed to an internal radius of up to 20mm – regardless of the direction of bend – and are 100% waterresistant. Coated with Cork-Stock, Wood-Stock or CPL/ veneer, these new materials are ideal for interior fittings in caravans or yachts, as well as for wet and humid areas. The new thermolaminate collections set the scene for sculpted furniture which demonstrate the versatility of Renolit Gorcell base material

combined with Renolit Alkorcell in contemporary finishes and on-trend colours. Just like wood: printed finish with synchronised pore In striving for the most natural possible effect in decorative wood finishes, synchronised pore technology remains the ultimate choice. For Renolit’s latest creation in 3D laminates, the striking Halifax oak finish, this technique helps recreate the interplay of knots, flaws and ribbon stripes in the wood. A visual as well as perceptible gnarled effect is created. The Nature shade perfectly fulfils the quest for a natural and authentic look for living rooms, while the pale tones of White will recreate a light Scandi decor in living rooms or offices, as well as suiting interior fittings. Equally White and the dark Tobacco are also well suited to door finishes. www.renolit.com

Cabinet Vision gives Stylecraft more customer time An Irish kitchen and bedroom specialist says Cabinet Vision software has slashed the time taken to manufacture all the cabinets and doors for a single installation, from days to just a couple of hours. And it put the time saved to a different use from the way most companies would – with enhanced customer service. Paul Phillips, director of Stylecraft Kitchens & Bedrooms, which works mainly with end-user customers and architects, says state-of-the-art software from Cabinet Vision means they can combine traditional cabinet making with the advantages of modern technology. “It saves us so much time with manufacturing,” says Paul, “and it also means we can now make so much more ourselves, so we no longer have to buy components in. This saves considerable administration time as we don’t have to place orders with suppliers for those items.” Previously, Stylecraft also suffered from added time pressures as door deliveries could take up to six weeks, with further delays if design changes were made. “While we may have been making a number of kitchens a week using the panel saw, we could now produce many more,” says Paul. “But we didn’t necessarily want to do that. So

instead, we invest a lot of the time it saves us, with our customers and creating new designs. We now have extra time available to us to ensure that the positive customer experience is something to be remembered.” He says Cabinet Vision has been one of the biggest drivers in moving the company forward in years. “When the recession ended, we looked at how we could start moving the business forward again. Cabinet Vision was the solution. In the beginning it was just something that interested us, that we thought could be advantageous. It very quickly became absolutely essential. We’d be quite anxious now if the computer wouldn’t switch on in the morning.” Stylecraft went down the CNC and software route to improve standards and explore new opportunities, and saw instant benefits. “For the first time it enabled us to visualise everything we were doing, including joints and construction

“Before using Cabinet Vision I didn’t realise the lack of limitations it has. It can do so much more than I originally thought.” FP310_Pages.indd 24

methods. Even now, we’re using it more and more every week, doing new things. And we are currently working with the Cabinet Vision support team on developing a range of new products, including new doors and cabinets.” Now, all of its products – whether they be inframe oak, ash and tulip wood kitchens, or carcasses for its contemporary and classic ranges – are designed with Cabinet Vision’s Solid Ultimate module, and the NC code is then sent by Screen to Machine to the Cosmec CNC router which Stylecraft purchased in November 2017. One of the early benefits was peace of mind, meaning that it no longer worried about the time frame to complete a project. Paul says the company quickly became more relaxed about it, knowing that the machine would run constantly for the duration of the job, turning everything out in a short space of time, and guaranteeing product quality every time. “I can also work on something in Cabinet Vision a short period of time before I need it. Previously I’d have to think about something two or three days beforehand, but now I simply send the code out to the CNC router within minutes of starting a new cabinet or door. “Before using Cabinet Vision I didn’t realise

26/07/2019 14:09

25 the lack of limitations it has. It can do so much more than I originally thought. It’s been a complete revelation to us, from previously cutting everything on the panel saw, to now producing precision parts that are 100% accurate every time in a shorter time frame. Cabinet Vision ensures the lines that you see when the doors and cabinets are installed, are absolutely perfect: for example, a 2.5mm margin will be exactly that all the way round,” says Paul. Labels are also printed through the software. As an example he cites reverse machining on

doors, saying that when the front nest has been machined, labels are created and a portable barcode scanner reads them for the reverse machining. “Moving ahead, we look forward to the eagerly-awaited software update with improved graphics that will mean we will be able to design, price and manufacture using Cabinet Vision.” Concluding, he says three other companies have invested in Cabinet Vision on his recommendation. And another company is going to look at the latest release. “If he likes it, which I’m sure he will, he’s planning to buy his first CNC router. That is the impact Cabinet Vision is having in the Irish woodworking business.” www.cabinetvision.com

Kudos to Daltons Wadkin for crosscutting solution Advanced Timbercraft takes advantage of Savlador SuperAngle for timber frame production. Kudos started out 20 years ago under the name Advanced Timbercraft. Over the years, the Northern Ireland firm realised its position in the market for expertly producing smart timber frame homes, focusing on energy efficiency and atmosphericallycontrolled dwellings. The re-brand in 2016 to the name Kudos allowed the company to grow and find new opportunities. Encouraging people to take a fresh look at timber frame, and a fresh look at its brand. Kudos prides itself on using the finest timber frame technologies to create bespoke, high performance and low energy properties. As one may expect, Kudos being at the forefront of sustainability and growth already owned some automated machinery. Kudos’ Andrew Eves told us: “We already had an automatic crosscut, for almost 18 years, so it was a case of upgrading. We knew we needed it.” Andrew explained that the company was able to receive funding, in the form of a grant for diversified farmland. This encouraged the team to look further afield for its crosscutting solutions and explore the market in more depth. Kudos didn’t hesitate to get in touch with Daltons Wadkin sales director, Andy Walsh, about

FP310_Pages.indd 26

Salvador automatic crosscutting solutions. After speaking with Andy Walsh, Andrew Eves said: “We were very impressed from the first phone call that Andy wanted to come and visit our workshop. The customer service was exceptional.” Following the visit, Andy Walsh explains that: “Meeting face-to-face with the customer is vital to identify their production needs. The Salvador SuperAngle S600 was an obvious choice to provide accuracy and performance for the timber frame business, and also the capacity and orientation to minimise disruption to their factory layout – offering a left to right feed version.” Compared to traditional crosscutting methods a Salvador SuperPush 600 can increase yield by 15% or more, reduce labour by over 50%, reduce operator skill

levels and increase productivity while providing a 100% safe working operation. However, for a company such as Kudos which already owned an automatic crosscut, how would the Salvador compare to what it previously used? Andrew Eves explains: “With the old automatic crosscut a designer did the cutting list optimisation on their own PC first. The Salvador S600 automatically optimises on the machine which saves about four hours per job, and it saves waste.” He also noted that the speed and accuracy of the S600 were also among the key benefits. Another reason for choosing the Salvador SuperAngle S600 was the ability to minimise waste, which would reduce the company’s impact on the environment as well as reduce cost. Last year saw the

third highest percentage rise in UK timber prices in the last 35 years, with costs increasing by 46.2%. Whilst timber prices are known to fluctuate, being able to make the most out of the timber one has is a top priority for the industry. The Salvador S600 automatically calculates the cuts on any size timber loaded, making the most of each piece of timber. Andrew Eves was very impressed with the Daltons Wadkin engineer’s level of knowledge, and how keen he was to answer any questions. He comments: “At one point we were talking about cutting rafters, and within minutes Sam was demonstrating how to do it.” Asking if Andrew would recommend Daltons Wadkin for Salvador crosscuts, he says: “In terms of customer service we were very happy. Daltons Wadkin are just on the other end of the phone and any software problems can be accessed by Daltons Wadkin engineers remotely. The Salvador saw is robust, it’s clearly designed for prolonged use. We would recommend it.” For more information on the Salvador range of automatic crosscutting solutions contact Daltons Wadkin. 0115 986 5201 info@daltonswadkin.com www.daltonswadkin.com

Advanced Furniture gains competitive edge with Homag UK Gwent-based Advanced Furniture is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. As part of its ambitious growth plans the company has recently invested in an Edgeteq S-300 edge bander with a Loopteq O-300 return system from Homag UK. “Our heritage as a business is rooted predominantly in the educational furniture sector, making tables, plastic polypropylene steel posted and wooden upholstered chairs,” explains operations director, Geraint Griffiths. He continues: “Until ten years ago that market represented almost 80% of our somewhat static £2.8m turnover business. And, whilst there was no doubt that the company’s strength in that market was hugely beneficial, it did bring its own challenges. “By its very nature, the educational market has a clearly defined peak in the summer months. During this time schools and colleges want new chairs, tables and other furniture delivered so they are prepared for the new academic year which usually starts in September. We realised, therefore, that to grow the business we had to look for new markets that would give us a more even work flow throughout the year. “Given that the skills, machinery and expertise we possess in educational furniture manufacturing are very similar to those required in the office furniture market, we made the strategic decision to enter that sector.” New manufacturing facility to meet ambitious growth plans “Although the types of furniture required for the

FP310_Pages.indd 28

office market are different to the educational sector, our general furniture manufacturing knowledge and experience enabled us to quickly make inroads into this new market. “Consequently, it wasn’t long before our turnover began to increase significantly. In 2017, this led to our investment in a new 100,000ft2. factory to future proof business expansion. Twice the size of our old unit, this new facility has enabled us to maintain a 16% year-on-year rise in sales, with our turnover this year predicted to hit £8.5m. “Once the new larger factory was operational, the next stage in our expansion plan was to source a new edge banding machine that would enable us to increase our capacity. During my 35 years or so in the office furniture manufacturing business, I have dealt with all the major machinery brands in the industry. This knowledge was invaluable when it came to sourcing this new edge bander. “In my experience, I have always found Homag offers the most reliable, technically advanced and best value for money machinery on the market. That’s not to say they’re the cheapest; the initial price can be higher than other brands. The quality, reliability and service back-up they provide, however, is second to none. As a consequence, the premium price is definitely worth paying because the lifetime value of a Homag machine is exceptional – you definitely get more for your pound notes. “The other massive benefit of dealing with Homag is that you are partnering with a global company that has an absolutely solid financial

Homag Edgeteq S-300 edge bander with a Loopteq O-300 return system at Advanced Furniture

foundation. This base not only gives you longterm peace of mind, but also ensures that the solutions Homag provides are at the cutting edge of technology.” A partnership that works “At the end of the day, however, it’s all about people. The team at Homag are always straighttalking; they don’t sugar-coat things or try to sell you something you don’t need. You can trust them to sit down with you and work out the best machine specification for your long-term goals. “Before ordering the Edgeteq S-300 with the Loopteq O-300 return system we supplied Homag with data, drawings, specifications, current sales levels and five year sales forecasts across our product groups. Furnished with this information they came back with a few alternative solutions that would give us the capacity we were looking for over the next five years. “The solution we chose was the Homag Edgeteq S-300. This gives us not only the perfect performance levels we want, but it will also handle our capacity as the business continues to grow at 10-15% over the next five years. “Adding the Loopteq O-300 return system means, of course, that we can run the edge bander with one operator. It also improves health and safety aspects for our workforce, as colleagues do not have to lift and manoeuvre heavy panels. This in turn eliminates the potential of workpiece damage that can occur with manual handling.”

26/07/2019 14:01

29 Carefully planned and efficient installation “Homag worked closely with us to prepare for the arrival of the new equipment. We were able to ensure all the preparation work was done correctly so that the actual installation process itself ran smoothly to plan. “Once the machines were in place and commissioned, Homag’s engineers trained our people on set-up, operation and maintenance of the equipment. And, because three weeks before delivery we sent our operators to Homag for software training, they soon got to grips with the new equipment.

“The machines are so well designed and the software so user friendly, it makes life much easier for our operators. They were able to maximise the potential of the edge bander almost immediately.” Delivering significant benefits “The new machines have improved output levels and quality whilst significantly increasing our capacity and ability to deal with summer production peaks. All this has ultimately improved our customer service which was one of our key goals for the expansion plans.

“The finance option Homag offered made the purchasing process very easy for us and looking ahead, we are confident that the return on investment will be under two years. “All in all, we are delighted with the new machinery from Homag and with the ongoing relationship we have established with the team at Castle Donington,” concludes Geraint Griffiths. businesses supplying these niche markets of postforming and thermoforming machinery. With its new premises Machinery Services UK (MSUK) is able to showcase more machines and invite customers old and new to come and see them. Turanlar’s latest range of edgebanders were all on show at Ligna recently where MSUK was able to assist on their stand. According to MSUK, these latest models are proving to be popular and as always the company continues to supply the demand for more specialist machines in the postforming markets. Over the years MSUK has been able to utilise Turanlar’s range of throughfeed postformers to aid many customers in the door and doorsets markets, particularly those involved within the healthcare industries. MSUK recently installed its most popular postformer, the T-PF 280, at Door Solutions Group in Dodworth, South Yorkshire. MSUK helped Door Solutions Group with its specific needs and was able to adapt machinery to suit. Donovan Watkins, MD for Door Solutions Group, had this to say about MSUK after the installation of the two machines. “We purchased the machines to accommodate the PVC doors a private hospital trust had requested us to manufacture on their behalf. We had a very good experience with the training day on our new machines, the Machinery Services team made it so easy to understand. “Both our apprentices, Stephen and myself, were able to complete the architrave and doorwrapping procedure with no complications. 34 EDGEBANDING MATERIALS & TECHNOLOGY

SCM Surface Technologies: a unique partner in surface treatment SCM has always placed importance on surface treatment and believes it was the first to believe in the importance of having technologies for finishing as part of its range which, thanks to the synergy between the sanding, coating and painting processes, prove to be invaluable on the market. Furthermore, SCM provides its clients with specific laboratories for this sector like the Superfici Technology Centre in Villasanta (Monza), the Surface Tech Lab in Villa Verucchio (Rimini) as well as other finishing laboratories in foreign branches. Thanks to its impressive and consolidated know-how, SCM is in a position to offer a wide range of technologies for sanding, pressing and finishing, distinguishing itself as a unique partner in the entire surface treatment process: a complete range of products and services as well as exclusive, sought-after finishing solutions that are integrated with each other to meet all the process and end product type requirements. The innovative DMC system operator units which transform the concept of sanding machine into a flexible abrasive modular centre, Superfici systems, a vast and varied range of automatic spraying machines or robotic solutions, both for painting and gluing, and the Sergiani 3D form presses which allow for uneven surfaces to be ennobled, are some of the key technology players in this integrated vision. These solutions allow for surfaces to be prepared and treated to produce finished products with a 3D finishing effect like wave designs, hand-smoothed, structured, band saw and worm hole, capable of conveying unique touch and visual sensations. If the Surface Tech Lab at Villa Verucchio is a point of reference for specific sanding and pressing technologies aimed at creating and coating complex surfaces, the Superfici Technology Centre in Villasanta (Monza), rounds off the offer with painting always integrated with other essential steps, especially sanding.

FP310_Pages.indd 34

“We are talking about 360° surface treatment because this process involves varying essential processes: sanding, pressing and painting,” explains Alberto Fiorani, business unit manager in charge of SCM technologies on the subject of sanding, sizing, pressing, assembly and packaging. “This is market demand, constantly in search of an integrated approach and solid points of reference with specialised skills, thanks to which a large part of a process can be handled well and safely.” Gloria Valtorta, Superfici’s business unit manager, adds: “We deal with finishing, painting, tactile aspects, aesthetics and sensitivity – this is our mission within the group. An important challenge because we are talking about

appearance, that first impression when you find yourself in front of a unit, a piece of furniture, a door or a window. “We are specialists strongly integrated into the group’s work, world leader in technologies for secondary wood processing. The technical and technological part of the finishing and painting is in our DNA and everything is devised, designed, planned and manufactured at Villasanta: whether we are talking about a line to integrate into a new plant produced by the group’s engineering or a machine that a long-standing or new client asked us for. At Superfici we cover everything.” The integrated project SCM’s integrated project shows how sanding, pressing and painting can produce unexpected results both at a creative and aesthetic level as well as good performance results. The three-dimensional surfaces sculpted by the DMC system models are a solid example capable of providing an optimal sanding to the panel, before it is coated in glue using the Superfici spraying system and perfectly covered with a plastic film thanks to a sergiani membrane press. This involves making use of all the know-how and knowing how to integrate it. The new laboratory at Villa Verucchio was set up to welcome clients who, starting with an idea, are looking to test the concrete result with the help of the team of SCM professionals. “Together with our clients, we study the best process and the machines best suited to intervening at the various stages – sanding, painting, pressing – to achieve the best solution, by working together. All this while availing of the services of specialised technicians,” explains Alberto Fiorani. At Villa Verucchio, the best of SCM solutions is made available to clients and their technicians, like the DMC system, top of the range models that can be configured for any kind of usage. They are modular machines that can house different units inside whose action, when >

36 EDGEBANDING MATERIALS & TECHNOLOGY adequately combined, means almost any kind of surface can be achieved, from the simplest sanding job to genuine sculptures. This latter machinery can produce a regular or perfectly random weaving, as is the case with the band saw effect on a wooden surface, a floor, to create a completely natural surface. These are machines where different elements can be inserted, longitudinal or trasversal sanding, super finisher units or units like the Planetario: this unit allows many different sanding process thanks to three different movements; for example by using orbital brush discs it can perfectly sand solid wood door frames, window frames or kitchen cabinets. After carrying out all the tests required with the different solutions made available to the client, the most suitable technology is configured by bringing together as many as ten different units in a single machine, the combination of units with which the client will be able to do all the machining required. All these potentials make these machines genuine sanding centres: flexible abrasive machining centres that can create a wide and varying range of different surfaces, changing from one machining process to another completely different one in a very short space of time. In the Surface Tech Lab at Villa Verucchio, there is also a Superfici corner with a Mini plug and spray spraying machine which offers all the advantages of an automatic spraying in a small case of efficiency and simplicity. Adding Superfici Mini – SCM’s entry level automatic spraying machine – will enable users to either paint panels and doors, or coat them with glue. This is quite literally a plug and spray machine for anyone who wants to make the move up from hand spraying to automatic spraying and it has been priced to suit smaller users. Superfici mini can handle different working programs and be fully connected, making things easier for the customer to handle orders and keep quality under control.

FP310_Pages.indd 36

All the parameters can be controlled and that means high quality and consistency, as well as being able to control cost. More and more customers want this kind of integration. To complete the integrated project developed by SCM, there is also the new range of Sergiani 3D form pressing solutions for laminating curved panels and those with three-dimensional effects. This model can offer a vast range of stand-alone or integrated solutions in automatic lines to meet the varying production needs. The pressing cycle is electronically adjustable and programmable at each stage to ensure the best panel finish according to the material being processed, guaranteeing top quality surfaces and gluing, plus a highly versatile application. Another Superfici technological solution that can be perfectly integrated with the SCM models for sanding and pressing is Superfici bravorobot. “This machine is more suitable for higher production. It offers increased accuracy when glue spraying and it has the technology on board to cope with more complicated shapes” explains Gloria Valtorta. “Typically, for spraying adhesive, you would want one gun dedicated to edge spraying that has specific nozzles and a fan size that is

effective on vertical sides, and two guns on a robotic arm for the surface with different nozzles to apply very little adhesive. With the bravorobot, the gun nozzle angle can be controlled for the edge but for the surface, the guns are fixed on the arm. “We can select where to apply more glue and where to apply less glue very easily so more can be applied on the edges and a mist can be applied to the surface. SCM and Superfici offer different nozzles to spray inside grooves. It’s a very versatile machine. “We have engineers and technicians ready to develop any idea, devise new products and experiment with them thanks to the extremely new technology centre in Villasanta,” continues Gloria. “We invest a great deal in applied research. Being able to do all this here at Superfici, means we can control the entire process, from the idea to checking its efficiency, developing new possibilities, evolutions on the process and product, on a daily basis, that go on to become part of the more evolved expertise in the industry, transmitted by SCM today around the world.” www.scmgroup.com/en

The entry level Edgeteq S-240 – more flexibility with axial adjustment

Truwood invests in Homag Edgeteq S-240 for future growth

Homag’s cabinetCreator web app – easy-to-use design software for the fast generation of production data

Since it began production in 1981, Truwood has built its reputation on providing bespoke joinery and associated works for both new build and refurbishment projects. The familyowned and managed company has enjoyed consistent growth throughout its history and its client base includes such names as Center Parcs Ireland, Guinness Storehouse Dublin, Hendricks Distillery Scotland and numerous multinational IT companies to name a few. “Truwood has been in business over 38 years,” explains contracts manager Emmet McKenna. He continues: “Until 2016, however, we had never purchased any Homag machinery. For many years we had been using an old solid wood edge bander, but with laminates becoming more and more popular our old machine just wasn’t cutting the mustard. So we began to look for a replacement. “Initial research was carried out at Xylexpo 2018 in Milan where we were able to see a number of different potential solutions under one roof. There were two or three manufacturers whose edge banders impressed us, but at this early stage we weren’t ready to make a decision. “We saw the machines again at the W18 show at the NEC in October. However, it wasn’t until we visited a company who already had a Homag Edgeteq and listened to their extremely complimentary evaluation of the machine that we made the final decision to purchase. “Although it wasn’t the cheapest option, the quality and specification of its products stood out. Derek Reid, Homag’s area manager,

FP310_Pages.indd 40

encouraged us with both his knowledge and approach, and we were particularly impressed by the complete package that Homag UK offered which included the XES 200 PUR service station.” The benefits of the Homag XES 200 PUR service station “At Truwood, our business is based mainly on bespoke solutions and therefore the edge bander can be working flat out one day, spasmodically another or requiring lots of different colour changes the next day. The hardening of PUR glues when exposed to air has always been a major issue. In the past, this meant a lot of downtime cleaning out and changing glue. “Homag’s XES 200 PUR service station is a great solution; not only can it be used to clean the application unit, but also to pre-heat glue for future work steps which saves us valuable time. “The application unit or the interchangeable container of the PUR melting unit can be stored without concerns. When left for the weekend, for example, we don’t have to connect the station to compressed air or a power grid, yet the contents won’t harden and work can simply continue on Monday.” Edgeteq S-240 – more flexibility with axial adjustment The Edgeteq S-240 is part of Homag’s entry level range and is ideal for small- to mediumsized workshops. It provides the complete processing capability previously reserved for

higher specified machines. The S-240 edge bander is equipped with a precise gluing unit for processing of PUR glue, a tiltable two-motor snipping unit for straight and chamfer snipping, as well as a trimming unit. For complete processing, a joint trimming unit, a profile trimming unit, a radius scraper, glue joint scraper and a buffing unit are available for the perfect finish. Alongside the machine’s extensive equipment, pneumatic adjustment of the snipping unit and pneumatic adjustment of the scraper are available in the standard version. Automation at the pressure zone, the end trimming, the flush trimming and profile trimming units, leads to considerable simplifications and time saving during set-up. With the axis adjustments of the units, individual alterations can be made quickly and efficiently. The highlight in the finish area is the optional multistage scraper with two different profiles. No more hand finishing Emmet McKenna again: “With the old solid wood edge bander there was always a lot of time-consuming hand finishing we had to do when edging laminates. Now, the Edgeteq S-240 finishes off the edging perfectly without the need for hand finishing, so it saves us both time and money. Not only that, but we also have happier customers because of the superb quality of the finished product. “Despite reducing the labour required to produce laminate panels, the new machine has enabled us to produce more panels in a shorter

26/07/2019 13:48

41 time-frame. And as I’ve already said, these panels are of a much higher quality than we could have produced previously, so it’s a win-win situation; we get very few aftersales issues.” Opening up new product avenues “The Edgeteq S-240 has also enabled us to attract new clients with more complex edging challenges. Now we have the confidence in the machine and know that we can produce such products in shorter lead times and to higher standards than before. “The new edge bander has enabled us to successfully complete projects for Center Parcs Ireland, Mont Clare Hotel and Vhi headquarters in Dublin. It will also help us on new projects for the likes of the Hard Rock Hotel, Dublin and Leopardstown Racecourse. “Overall we’re really happy with the machine and with Homag UK. They’re informative and professional in all communications; we know we can rely on the Homag UK staff and the Edgeteq S-240 to support us whatever issues we may face,” concludes Emmet McKenna. Delivering edgebanding capability that customers need

Stand Q610

For a number of years, J & C O’Meara had been searching for a hot melt edgebander that could apply tapes up to 2mm in thickness, and having attended numerous international trade shows, MD Carl O’Meara became very aware of the vast array of machines available from the many producers around the globe offering all different styles with differing levels of quality.

CNC Machinery for Nesting Drilling & Shaping Joinery Door Production

The machine Carl was looking for needed to complement the established Genisis range of sliding table panel saws the company already had in its range, with several explicit requirements the machine had to meet including the build quality, the components used in construction, being from a reputable source and he also wanted a machine that would simply offer that little bit more in terms of capability yet be priced for the small- to medium-sized furniture manufacturer. The company found that as soon as 2mm PVC was mentioned, the majority of machinery manufacturers started talking about machines with essentially the same specification and having separate end saws, separate flush trim, separate rounding station and such like, making the machine very long and very expensive. But then in 2013, Carl met a small but established machinery producer which had developed a system which allows the flush

Everything you need for...

trimmers to also do the corner rounding and the end trimming. The advantage of this system is that it makes the machine a lot more compact which in turn also substantially reduces the price, whilst making the machine easier to set up when using tapes of different thickness. “In 2014 the Genisis 512S was introduced to the UK and has become our best-selling edgebander,” explains Carl. “The machine has a high specification and is ideally suited to the application of tapes up to 2mm in thickness. “The machine has pre-milling which rereferences the edges and removes any marks left by a scorer or any chips caused during handling and ensures a perfect edge prior to the application of the tape. The machine also has pre heating of the edge prior to reaching the glue roller to offer a better bond, especially during the winter months when the cold can affect the adhesion to a cold surface.

“The ‘secret weapon’ on the machine is the combined top/bottom/end trim and corner rounding station which essentially works on the same principle as a copy router but of industrial design to trim all round the panel. This system reduces the length of machine frame plus the cost of additional motors required as opposed to machines having separate stations. “After trimming, the machine is equipped with top and bottom scrapers followed by top and bottom solvent spray to ensure a clean, ready to use edge as the panel leaves the buffing station. Carl concludes: “The machine is track driven and works at a very productive 12m/min, offering an umatched ratio between price and productivity.” Further information including video clips of the machines working can be seen on the company’s website. www.ukwoodworkingmachinery.co.uk

48 ROBOTICS & AUTOMATION

Fully automated Homag production cells – accessible by the smallest of manufacturers

Homag UK – simplifying automation and networked production for entry level workshops The big focus for the woodworking industry over the last few years has been networked production and the automation of production processes. Whilst the industry has seen many impressive solutions, automation has, until now, been seen as the reserve of the larger manufacturers. The investment levels required have put these systems beyond the reach of smaller workshops. Homag, however, has been designing and developing its own innovative solutions for networked production with the expressed goal of simplifying them and making them more accessible. Simon Brooks, managing director, Homag UK explains: “Whilst some businesses are already taking advantage of networked production, there are still some who are holding back investing in this technology. They are concerned that the financial commitment required is beyond their budgets. “Homag recognises that for smaller manufacturers, the move into automated production and cell workshops can be a daunting leap. Therefore our engineers have designed a range of software and machinery solutions that can be added to an existing workshop to automate it cost effectively. This approach allows even the smallest of manufacturers to gradually develop from networked production to a fully automated production cell – regardless of size and turnover.” Automated solutions for planning, design and order management Homag’s entry level cell solutions begin at the most important stage of production – planning, design and order management. Homag’s

FP310_Pages.indd 48

cabinetCreator is a planning and design web app which can be accessed easily on any device with internet such as computers and tablets. It provides easy step-by-step navigation to aid the fast generation of production data. Using 2D/3D furniture visualisation, users can quickly and easily configure furniture using a library of basic furniture shapes or create their own library of designs. Once the design has been finalised, cabinetCreator produces a bill of materials needed for cutting and generates the program for CNC machines. This design software makes it simple and fast to turn customer requests into

finished furniture pieces. When it comes to order management, it’s not uncommon for small businesses to still use a time-consuming and potentially inaccurate paper system. To enable small companies to transition from paper to a more efficient and secure order system, Homag has created productionManager. All the data related to each job, such as information from cabinetCreator, can be easily imported to a digital job folder and accessed via smartphone or tablet when required. This allows the operator to have an overview of the job status at any time.

49 up and operation is faster than ever. The 360° access has been achieved thanks to the new Bumper Safety technology system. With this system, the P-110s stop automatically if anyone or anything comes into contact with the bumper. The open sides design has resulted in a 15% reduction in the footprint of the machine making it ideal for smaller facilities.

“Homag recognises that for smaller manufacturers, the move into automated production and cell workshops can be a daunting leap. Therefore our engineers have designed a range of software and machinery solutions that can be added to an existing workshop to automate it cost effectively” Efficient automated storage with the Storeteq S-200 Once an order is placed, designed and the system knows what parts it needs, it is essential to have an efficient storage system in place to achieve fast production times. The Homag Storeteq S-200 is an ideal entry level solution for small workshops which are restricted by space. It optimises the storage area in workshops thus saving valuable production space. The Storeteq S-200 can increase productivity by up to 40% with the quick, efficient storage and safe handling of panels. By calculating the best panel size to use, it also minimises material waste, speeding up the production process by keeping materials flowing and reducing any downtime in between panels. Furthermore, the S-200 features an intelligent standby mode which means the system only consumes energy when it is operational. Entry level to mid-range edge banding solutions The Edgeteq S-200 is an ideal entry level edge processing machine. The compact system can process edges up to a thickness of 6mm and workpieces up to a thickness of 60mm. Users are able to fully process workpieces with joining and profile trimming for perfect edges. In addition to glue application, the compact system is now available with the hot air reactivation airTec unit for zero visible joints. For the entry level manufacturers who wish to invest in a step-up from the S-200 the Edgeteq S-300 is an ideal solution. The S-300 is a high-performance mid-range model which can

FP310_Pages.indd 49

reach edging feed speeds of 14m/min. With a multifunctional profile trimming unit for corner rounding and flush trimming, it is an extremely versatile system. Offering both EVA and PUR gluing systems, the S-300 is now available with zero joint technology as standard on the airTec model. For those who want to incorporate automation to their edging system, the S-300 is the first of Homag’s edgebanding range which is compatible with a return conveyor solution. Automated edgebanding with the Loopteq O-200 The Loopteq O-200 return system makes the ideal companion for the Edgeteq S-300. It turns edgebanding systems into a one-man operation – ideal for small workshops as it allows operators to be freed up for other tasks. Edged pieces travel down a conveyor system where they are automatically turned and then returned to the operator at the front of the edge bander. This not only speeds up production by creating a continuous edging loop but also reduces the amount of manual handling needed by the operator. The return system is the perfect introduction to automated edgebanding for midsized workshops. The Centateq P-110 – powerful and compact CNC processing The Homag Centateq P-110 series offers three-, four- and five-axis solutions in a compact design with state-of-the-art technology for entry level manufacturers. With machine operators now able to access the CNC from all four sides, set-

Automated carcass assembly – Homag Cabteq S-200 When it comes to entry level assembly, the Homag Cabteq S-200 is the ideal entry level solution. Whether it’s series or batch sized one production, it is essential the quality of the finished product matches the customer’s design. The reliable S-200 provides high levels of performance and finish quality. It consistently produces fully sealed, cleanly pressed cabinets that are accurately aligned. With two operating speeds, it is easy for operators to increase the amount of pressed cabinets per shift when required. Depending on the cabinet type, the pressing force can be adjusted to different requirements at the touch of a button. This allows cabinets with delicate surfaces, thin walls and small cabinets to be securely pressed. With a small footprint to fit in the tightest of workshops, the S-200 is impressively easy to install and operate. The Paqteq C-200 – initiative on demand packaging Automated packaging solutions such as a cardboard box cutting machine would usually be seen as the reserve of the larger workshops, however the Paqteq C-200 is an affordable entry level solution. Ideal for an automated cell, the C-200 produces tailored packaging for products which are always of optimum size and only in the required quantity. By producing appropriately-sized packaging, it minimises the risk of damage during transport. Also as businesses aim to be more eco-friendly, they look to reduce the use of packaging and filler materials. The Paqteq C-200 produces less waste and frees up storage space as it eliminates the need to store ready-made packaging. Simon Brooks concludes: “Homag has developed an entry level automated workshop concept to provide a starting block for those wanting to develop their own automated production facility. The cell has been designed as the perfect example of how automation and networked production can boost productivity for smaller manufacturers in order to get more from their workshop. “In a move to simplify networked production and automation, Homag is committed to working with manufacturers. This includes the Homag finance team whose goal is to make investments easier and more affordable, thus allowing more entry level workshops to reap the benefits of automation.” 01332 856424 www.homag.com

50 ROBOTICS & AUTOMATION

Masterwood expansion announced at Ligna This year’s Ligna Exhibition was an exciting one for Masterwood, with the launch of two new machine lines, in partnership with KDT Machinery. For over 50 years Masterwood SpA has been designing and building CNC machines from its Rimini factory and in February 2018 it was announced that KDT had become a partner in the company. At the Ligna show it was officially announced that after nine months of the two companies working together on developments, the first machines from KDT are now available under the Masterwood name. The two new ranges of machines include an edgebanding series and a CNC drilling machine, built by KDT Machinery in China and supplied under the Masterwood name. KDT is one of the world leaders in woodworking machinery and currently builds and supplies over 500 edgebanders per month. MasterEdge This is the new range of edgebanders under the Masterwood/KDT name, various changes have been made to the original KDT designs to suit Masterwood’s requirements for its dealers in

Europe and other areas of the world. To cover all areas of the market, four specifications of the new edgebanders will be available, ranging from a small entry-level version through to a high specification top end model. Functions available on the machines include; pre-milling, pre-melt, double rail end-cutting, rough trim, fine trim, corner rounding, edge scraping, glue scraping, cleaning, buffing and bottom grooving. Depending on the model, these options are also available with a four-position automatic edge feeder, two quick-change glue pots, plus touch-screen PLC controls. Panels from 10-60mm can be worked with edgings of 0.4mm to 3mm. MasterDrill In addition to the original Project TF 100, Masterwood can now offer a wider range of drilling machines for the panel market. The Master Drill series, which is available in three versions, has the advantage of working above and below simultaneously, thanks to the Smart table for continuous workpiece support

and patented airbed tables. The machines can have vertical and horizontal drilling heads above and below the bed, plus the options for vertical routes, with these combinations and the twin gripper feed system it ensures fast and accurate machining. Programmes are easy to generate in the Masterwood CAD/CAM software and can then be used with barcodes and scanners for fast, automated production. Options of infeed and outfeed tables to help speed up production time are available amongst the three models. Panel sizes are from 10-60mm thickness, 501200mm wide and 200-2500mm in length. A full range of machines that include the Muti oscillating chisel mortises, CNC drilling machines, and CNC routers will continue to be built in Italy using proven designs and leading suppliers for components like HSD, Beckhoff, Yaskawa, THK, Schmalz, and Becker. Once again Masterwood brings new developments to the market. Innovation, not imitation. 01293 402700 www.masterwood.com

T-type hinges: setting new standards for performance, versatility and convenience

The new T-type hinges from cabinet hardware expert Titus reliably deliver the soft closing action preferred by end users, whilst also offering decisive advantages for furniture manufacturers. They feature the company’s 3Way snap-on mounting, which makes them fast and easy to install, they can be used with a wide range of door thicknesses and types, they are tolerant of misalignment and drilling variations, and they have passed FIRA tests for BS 6222-2-2009, Test Level H. T-type hinges feature the renowned Titus Confident Close action. This is the consumerpreferred reliable and consistent soft-closing action characterised by late-start deceleration and quiet landing in the last stage of closing, as the door reaches the cabinet side. The proprietary Titus multi-purpose integrated damping technology is transversally positioned in the hinge cup, which ensures dependable lifelong damping with no bounce-back. The dampers used in these innovative hinges are single-direction hydraulic types that are fully sealed to eliminate the possibility of oil leakage. They are easy to adjust, which ensures that consistent performance can be achieved on doors with a wide range of different dimensions and weights. The unique 3Way tool-less snap-on mounting plate used in T-type hinges offers intuitive hingeto-plate mounting in three directions: the hinge can be presented to the plate from the front, from the back or from the top and, with just one sharp tap of the hand, it will click easily and positively into place.

FP310_Pages.indd 54

This greatly simplifies door installation especially with tall doors that need four or even five hinges. The unique design of the mounting plate also reinforces stability and rigidity while maintaining smooth hinge operation. Another key benefit of T-type hinges is that they need only shallow drillings for the hinge cups, which means they can be used on doors with thicknesses from 15-26mm. Titus T-type hinges are available in standard and pie-cut versions. They can be supplied with cross-mounting or linear mounting plates that simplify both hinge alignment and hinge-to-plate attachment. 01977 682582 www.titusplus.com

Enhancing heritage with Lamello “Our company is about keeping traditional skills alive and embracing new technology,” begins John Hampton, production manager at Artichoke. “We specialise in the design and build of super high-end furniture for large period homes. It’s our job to add value to architecture and create bespoke pieces that not only stand the test of time but are seen as part of the property’s heritage. “To achieve this, we have to work with the very best consumables on the market and continue to push the boundaries of design.” This clear vision has led the Somerset-based business to invest heavily in its production facilities, whilst its pursuit of products designed to enhance quality and improve efficiency has led it to the door of Swiss fixings specialist, Lamello. Following a detailed demonstration of Lamello’s Zeta P2 profile biscuit jointer by one of Lamello’s UK distributors’, Axminster Tools, John and his team were given six weeks to put the jointer and a selection of connectors though their paces. “It was an opportunity we couldn’t refuse,” admits John, who looked thrilled with the idea of his team putting the Zeta P2 to work. “When you’re faced with an experienced team of cabinetmakers, having a tool that can be put to the test and still come out winning is no mean feat. We initially used it on a couple of smaller projects to get an understanding of its capabilities and to see if it was a good fit for our company. It got the green light within hours of the team getting their hands on it. “Our industry is very traditional and many of the techniques we use today have remained unchanged for centuries. My team take great pride in these mastered skills and are sticklers for detail and quality. This has made them shy away from modern methods more than once, and rightly so, but the Zeta P2 had a very different response. They saw the potential straight away and it’s been in constant use ever since.” Before the introduction of the Zeta P2, Artichoke’s cabinetmakers would join frames onto carcasses using traditional cams and pins. “To avoid disruption on-site and to be certain of the quality of each piece of furniture, we like to transport our furniture as complete as possible

The use of the Clamex P connector

and put a small parts kit together in order for the installation team to complete the job. “The downside to using cams and pins in this is way is that you can’t insert the pins into the back of face frames before they leave the assembly area in case they damage the item. They are also notorious for coming out of the frames during the build. Lamello’s Clamex P offered us the perfect alternative for this application. “As well as being designed as a strong, temporary fixing, which has helped us reduce assembly time, they also have a low profile that reduces the risk of damage when being transported to their new home. Its clamping system also gives us the option to temporarily or permanently fix the face frames to work around the different stages of each build. “Plus, we have the added flexibility of being able to swap Lamello’s consumables to best suit the application we’re working on. These decisions can be made during the installation process which, when working only on bespoke projects, helps us solve unforeseen complications that may arise on site.” The team has gained valuable experience working with Lamello’s complete range of fixings, including the Clamex P, Divario P, Bisco P and Tenso P. “Each connector brings its own unique benefits to the table,” explains John, as he shows me an example of a large kitchen his team is assembling in the workshop with Lamello connectors. “Take the Tenso P for example. The glueassist connector has simplified the way we glue our mitres on our more contemporary-styled kitchens. We apply thick profile edges onto internal shelves which, in the past, would require a lot of time setting-up and removing sash claps. “Then there was the long gluing process. Now, thanks to the Tenso P and its self-clamping design, we simply apply the glue at any angle and leave it to dry. “We also use the Divario P on carcasses that have a central divide. It’s completely invisible when fitted and it offers the strength needed in applications like this. In the last few weeks, we’ve also heard about the new Tenso P-10 which we’re keen to try on applications where

Clamex P used on a curved door design

Zeta P2 demonstration

we’re limited on the panel thickness on a mitre. The entire range is now part of our core kit in the workshop and using the Zeta P2 is second nature to us.” Lamello’s Zeta P2 has opened up new production possibilities for Artichoke and has already helped the team with several intricate applications, including the recent installation of a leather-clad gun carcass with internal gun supports. “The Zeta P2 played a crucial part in this project and helped our team apply invisible fixings quickly and efficiently to internal supports on site. It would have been considerably more challenging and timely if we hadn’t used Lamello. Its portable design has also made us consider the possibility of a third Zeta P2 for use exclusively on site. We wouldn’t invest in another one without good reason.” John concludes: “I firmly believe that if there is a better way of doing something, you shouldn’t be afraid to try it. Buying into the Lamello product range is a clear example of this. It’s important to build relationships with companies that share your company’s values and if you build relationships with the right companies, it makes you stronger. Lamello and Axminster Tools do this. They have a fantastic reputation and that gives us confidence to invest in them. “There is an upfront cost involved when purchasing the kit but we’ve seen a return on this through the speed of application and the ease in which it’s been integrated into our methods and processes. It’s giving value to our customers and adding value to our business through enhanced quality and efficiency. What more could you ask for? “We’ve recommend Lamello to a number of cabinetmakers in a bid to build industry knowledge and if you’re reading this and wondering if this could be the product for you, why not ask for your own demonstration and see the results for yourself?” For more information, contact Lamello’s UK representative, Shaye Chatfield. 0789 1025 646 email s.chatfield@lamello.com www.lamello.com

Peanuts everywhere In just 12 months, Intelligent Fixings’ innovative Peanut Connecting System has made strong connections globally. The Peanut1 is the self-clamping single component connector, for use with CNC machines; production is quick and efficient, as only one machining process is required. The Peanut2 is the self-clamping invisible connector. It is ideal for boring and insertion machines. Both Peanuts create incredibly strong joints, pack flat when pre-inserted and can be reassembled many times. The attraction of the system is its simplicity and product high-quality, at affordable prices. Excitingly, the company has now developed a new jig for use with handheld routers. It will enable smaller workshops and carpenters to use the simple Intelligent Fixings (IF) connecting system too. This will be available later this year. After launching to the European market at Interzum and Ligna with phenomenal success, starter packs comprising both the Peanut1 and Peanut2 components, a solid carbide bespoke Peanut cutter, a 25mm high performance drill

bit and a 5mm solid carbide drill bit, have proved very popular for the early adopters to trial the system. With contacts from over 80 countries, the Peanuts have been dispatched to all four corners of the globe! IF continues with its global awareness programme the other side of the pond. Beginning with an amazing meeting in California with one of America’s largest furniture-making companies, it was excited to experience the Peanut phenomenon at its factory, after first seeing it in Germany. TheIF team then moved on to Las Vegas to get ready for the popular AWFS. As this article was being written, the team was making final preparations for what is predicted to be a very busy few days at the trade show in Sin City. The IF team will be able to briefly catch breath before its next trade show at DREMA, Poland, 10-13th September. This will then be followed by SICAM, Italy, 15-18th October, along with another favourite event – Inside Biesse 2019, Pesaro, Italy, 3rd-5th October. www.intelligentfixings.com

The Schelling fh4

Schelling – something for everyone At the recent Ligna event in Germany, Schelling demonstrated that innovation and product development are top of the list in its values. The successful Austrian panel sizing saws and plants business has completely revised the circular workcell concept of its Lot Size One panel cutting cell, for batch size one production. The redesigned compact circular workcell concept integrates new and innovative solutions into one overall solution that’s highly attractive, both from a technological and an economic viewpoint. Not only does the new system include leaner processes, it also fits into a smaller floor space, offers reduced cycle times, and consumes far less energy than its predecessor. The new gantry-free circular workcell concept permits almost uninterrupted saw activity. The vacuum manipulators move the strips, without lifting them, from one circulator trolley to the next, using a brush table, facilitating a narrower return conveyor system. Schelling says the new design of the LS1 really is the next step in automation for panel cutting, and Schelling is showing it off with pride.

The Schelling s45

Something a little smaller? Schelling has a vast product range. For smaller manufacturers who cannot justify the use of a large plant, or for a more bespoke solution, Schelling can offer something to get the job done perfectly. Single cuts or large packages? The fh4 accomplishes any task quickly and efficiently. An additional Duplus2 infeed carriage permits simultaneous cutting of strips with different cross sectional areas. In combination with a separate sweep off carriage, the production capacity of the saw can be increased by up to 20%. The s45 performs mitre cuts of 0-46° effortlessly with the panel sizing cut. All of this is possible up to a length of 5800mm. Also, mitres with glued PVC edging and flat mitre joints can be processed perfectly up that length. In this process, CNC axes control the height adjustment and the panel infeed with a precision of 0.05mm. 01937 586 340 sales@schelling.co.uk www.schelling.co.uk

64 SAWS, BLADES & CUTTING TECHNOLOGY Vollmer VGrind 360 with robotic loading system

Vollmer VGrind 360 with automation system

VGrind takes automation to new level As a world-leading manufacturer of grinding and erosion machines that has always retained its ever-present focus on the customer, Vollmer has introduced a host of automation solutions for what it describes as its groundbreaking VGrind 360 tool grinding machine. As the successor to the VGrind 160, the VGrind 360 tool grinding machine is equipped with enhanced travel distances to machine carbide tools up to a diameter of 100mm. Thanks to its two vertical spindles, the VGrind 360 also allows tried-and-tested multi-level machining. This enables tool manufacturers to produce large numbers of milling cutters and drills quickly and precisely, making the VGrind 360 the most productive solution on the market. However, manufacturers are increasingly demanding automated tool production and this is where Vollmer really excels. Automated solutions, such as pallet magazines, wheel-changing packages and free-arm robots allow machining to continue unsupervised around the clock – but the opportunities go much further. The optional wheel-changing facility on the VGrind 360 provides the opportunity for manufacturers to load up to eight grinding wheel packages. Accommodating grinding wheels up to 150mm diameter, the wheel changer is located outside the work envelope in a clean environment to prevent contamination. This fully automated process can change a wheel and the respective coolant nozzles in just nine seconds on either spindle Committed to providing its customers with a complete automation solution, Vollmer has also developed its HP160, HC4 and HPR250 automation packages to demonstrate the complete range of opportunities for end users. The HP160 pallet magazine and HC4 chain

FP310_Pages.indd 64

magazine are compact and ergonomic solutions that provide external loading and unloading with a single or double gripper configuration for clamping tool shanks up to 25.4mm diameter. The gripper system also incorporates fully automatic in-process compensation to improve precision, run-out and reduce sleeve wear. The HP160 system is available with a two or four pallet station that can accommodate up to 272 or 900 cutting tools respectively, so precision and automated reliability are crucial components of the VGrind. Fitting into an area of just over 0.5m, the compact pallet format is available with 199 by

The Vollmer VGrind

144mm pallets or 224 by 144mm. The pallet plates can hold up to 300 tools from 2-6mm diameter, 120 tools up to 8mm shank, 99 tools at 10mm, 80 tools at 12mm and 42 tools with shanks between 14-20mm diameters. For a machine to attain such astounding levels of precision, Vollmer has to meticulously develop each stage of the process. This includes the fully automatic gripper compensation that takes 10 seconds to undertake a tool return and collection cycle. With the gripper compensation system and grinding wheels equipped in a single measuring unit, precision and run-out are massively improved whilst sleeve wear is drastically reduced. The impressive pallet facility can be loaded by either the HC4 chain magazine system for tools up to HSK-A63 or the HPR 250 free-arm robot system. Incorporating a FANUC robot cell, the HPR250 allows end users to triple capacity with even more flexibility. Vollmer takes automated production further than the pallet, chain magazine and robotic loading systems. With the onset of Industry 4.0, automation is now being integrated into the entire production process and Vollmer has made significant strides down this path with its V@dison platform that incorporates the data exchange between different machines from different manufacturers. Encompassing everything from grinding and measuring through to automatic compensation and finish grinding, you can be confident that Industry 4.0 solutions from Vollmer will streamline your cutting tool production. Vollmer works in synergy with NUM and the company’s NUMROTO grinding and simulation software that is integrated into the Vollmer V@dison vision. 0115 949 1040 www.vollmer-group.com

A new chapter for TM Machinery Woodworking machinery specialist, TM Machinery Sales, has recruited Sean Taylor as its new sales manager. Sean’s experience in the woodworking industry spans over 30 years. Starting his career as a trainee wood machinist in the late 80s, he soon progressed to become a tooling manager, technical sales manager and, most recently, a trainer and assessor at Didac – a respected training provider for the furniture industry. In his new role with the Leicester-based machinery supplier, Sean will be responsible for new sales generation throughout the UK, as well as overseeing new and existing Health and Safety practises within the business and training team members on the latest machinery regulations. Keen to hit the ground running, Sean has already introduced training packs to the company’s engineers and is developing additional training material and assessment sheets designed to cover every eventuality.

Sean says: “I wanted to work with a company that I could grow with and make a real difference. This role also offers me variety. It allows me to touch on my experience in both technical machinery sales and industry training, whilst also challenging me to maintain a firm understanding of any changes to industry legislation and best practise that could be crucial to the way we operate. “I’m also really looking forward to getting my hands on the Striebig vertical panel saw range and Alko dust extraction units. I’ve trained several companies on how best to use them in my previous role as a trainer and assessor and they’re really impressive bits of kit. I’ve seen the difference these machines can make to a company’s manufacturing capabilities and as a salesman, that excites me.” Matt Pearce, managing director of TM

FP310_Pages.indd 65

Machinery Sales adds: “It’s not often you find an individual that has such a comprehensive background in both sales and industry training but Sean has these qualities. We needed someone who could assist us in developing and improving key areas of our business and with Sean’s experience in training, health and safety and his solid connections in the industry, he was the ideal candidate for us. “He’s already making a great impact on the business. Our next step is to integrate new portable software into the business to improve efficiency and increase productivity during site visits and installations. How Permadoor saved over £400,000 with Leitz Tooling As the creator of the first low maintenance composite door in the UK, Permadoor’s extensive experience in GRP door production is undeniable, but when current sales demand appeared to require the introduction of a working night shift, it took teamwork with Leitz Tooling for Permadoor to find an alternative solution. Since it was established in 1989, Permadoor, based near Worcester, has produced over a million doors. David Welsby, Permadoor’s engineering and maintenance manager explains: “About two years ago we knew we had an issue with our previous tooling supplier. There was simply no back-up when we needed it, no-one was taking any responsibility and supposedly reasonablypriced tooling was working out to be very expensive. “A change in tooling supplier is not a decision made lightly for any size of company, but we put through serious volumes of product, and we could not afford for our high standards and quality to be compromised in any way.” At the time, the company’s sales demand was leading to the set-up and considerable cost of a premium shift pattern five days a week. Finding a proactive tooling partner in Leitz, together they completely reviewed how Permadoor was using tooling, what issues and problems there were, what tooling was breaking, and why. Optimum cutter selection will reduce cycle times Cycle times for machining was the major constraint. After much analysis and consideration, the solution of alternative cutters provided savings in cycle times within a range

of between 100-150%, doubling the company’s CNC machines’ capacity overnight. For its CNCs, Permadoor now uses a combination of Leitz Tooling’s spirals, diamond, Marathon and Profilcut tools. Now seeing much greater efficiencies and tooling life expectancy, the drastically reduced cycle time enabled the daily production requirements to be manufactured in a single shift. In discussion with Leitz, Permadoor general manager Mark White identified that its entire night shift – previously necessary to meet demand – could now be reallocated, avoiding the company costs of in excess of £400,000. “Additional operator training has proved a vital part of the service we receive from Leitz,” continues David Welsby. “It wasn’t just the tooling. With the production knowledge from the Leitz team we saved a further £25,000 in ancillary equipment such as a pod replacement. You get what you pay for Working with Leitz, the actual cost of the tooling for Permadoor has dropped by 45%. “Leitz’s prices are actually not that much more than others, but there is no like-for-like comparison. Leitz’s tooling gives us a superior product, faster, more efficiently and with far less waste. The savings, and Leitz’s support, is massive.” The level of scrap doors through cutter failure was also a priority in associated skip hire and landfill costs. But after the introduction of correct programming parameters, machine speeds and cutters with guidance from Leitz, the scrap from manufacturing reduced, with a visible and financial upside of circa £100,000. David says: “Taking time to inform and share this knowledge with the operators is so important. Everyone takes pride in their work, but it makes an even greater difference when your team understands the huge positive impact of

FP310_Pages.indd 66

doing things correctly. Leitz provides the whole package including regular review meetings. Our general manager is more than happy – he is amazed by the quality, efficiency and financial gains Permadoor has enjoyed since working with Leitz for very little investment.” Managing director Leitz UK, Simon Liddell comments: “We are very proud of the Leitz team. This is a typical example of how we apply ourselves in the marketplace to assist companies across the spectrum. This goes towards achieving a major objective of ours which, amongst others, is to improve customer efficiency and subsequent profitability to help them grow in very competitive market conditions. We thank Mark White, David Welsby and the Permadoor team for allowing Leitz to work with them to mutual benefit.” salesuk@leitz.org www.leitz-tooling.co.uk www.permadoor.co.uk

VWM LTD INSTALL TWO MORE TECHNOS FLEX CNC ROUTERS CONTINUING ON THE SUCCESS OF THE TECHNOS RANGE OF CNC ROUTERS, VWM’S ENGINEERS HAVE BEEN BUSY INSTALLING TWO MORE. One sold to a company in Scotland, who produce plywood van lining kits. This is an existing customer who very successful in his business has rapidly outgrown the first CNC Router VWM sold them over 10 years ago. The challenge now was to offer a second machine, but somehow increase production greatly. This was achieved by offering a New Technos Flex CNC Router with a 3,200mm X 1,600mm matrix vacuum, with special double roller hold down system, which allows the operator to load up to five plywood sheets onto the machine at one time, the vacuum will hold the bottom sheet down whilst the roller hold down will clamp the other sheets, thus machining five sheets for the time taken to cut one, which has increased his production four fold.

ANOTHER MACHINE SOLD INTO A COMPANY IN LANCASHIRE WHO MAKE BESPOKE FURNITURE. This is also an existing customer, who again is very successful in his business and just needed extra capacity. VWM offered a new Technos Flex CNC Router with 3,200mm X 1,600mm matrix vacuum table with one 250cm/hr vacuum pump, one 8Kw router spindle and a 12-station rotary tool changer. VWM’s engineers have sited this second machine in such a way to allow the operator to run both machines to help reduce overheads.

Ostermann experts offer tips and tricks on material cleaning Edging specialist Ostermann has a great range of products for mechanical or manual material cleaning. Ostermann’s many cabinetmakers, carpenters and joiners are not only very experienced in the areas of edgings and adhesives but have also gained extraordinary expertise in the matter of cleaners that it is happy to pass on to its colleagues in the workshop.

Ostermann supplies many products for material cleaning. For manual cleaning, the Ostermann experts recommend the Scotch-Brite polishing cloth

Whether for mechanical edge processing or manual surface cleaning, for machine cleaning or cleaning after the final assembly, Ostermann has the right products for every application. With Redocol Teclinex One For All, Ostermann technicians have even developed a cleaner by themselves that is exactly meeting the requirements of tradespeople. Mechanical edge processing Ostermann offers two alternative product solutions for all processes during and after mechanical edge processing as well as for the surface cleaning at the edgebanding machine: one of them is the Redocol Teclinex One For All. The greenline series cleaner can be applied at all stations of the edgebanding machine and ensures a perfect edging finish and milling result. An alternative to Teclinex are the popular products from FSG. A particularly useful accessory for mechanical edge processing is

the laboratory bottle set including a plug-in connector, a suction filter and suction hose, and a ventilation screw. Ostermann tip for machine cleaning When using standard spray and separation agents for edgebanding machines, the machine’s transport tracks often leave annoying marks on high gloss or super matt furniture finishes. Subsequently, these often have to be cleaned manually which is time-consuming. If the transport tracks are cleaned on a regular basis with Redocol Teclinex One For All, annoying marks may be avoided in advance. The protection of transport tracks and polyurethane rollers have been tested by an independent institute according to DIN EN ISO 62 and certified as very good. Manual surface cleaning Ostermann further supplies a series of different items for manual surface cleaning, including products for the removal of glue residues, pencil marks, felt-tip lines, and more. Apart from the universal Redocol Teclinex, there is also the popular FSG cleaner in two different variants (with citrus scent or odourless).

Redocol Teclinex One For All is a ‘greenline’ product: it is made almost completely of plant-based raw materials. It helps to reduce the number of cleaners and thus the amount of dangerous substances in the workshop

FP310_Pages.indd 70

26/07/2019 13:49

71 To prevent already-cleaned surfaces from regathering dust, both variants are available with an antistatic additive as well. The Ostermann experts particularly recommend the FSG cleaner to remove hotmelt adhesive remnants, as well as for cleaning substrates before foiling. Ostermann tips for manual surface cleaning For manual cleaning, the right cleaning cloth is just as essential as the cleaner itself. The Ostermann experts recommend the Scotch-Brite microfibre polishing cloth. To save cleaning fluid when moistening the cleaning cloth, Ostermann also offers a plunger can for the cleaner. It only dispenses the amount of liquid necessary to moisten the cloth, so that there is no unnecessary spilling of cleaning fluid. The hand pump spray bottle is another handy device that is specifically adapted for holding solventbased cleaners. Tip for the manual cleaning of big, dark surfaces For big, dark surfaces, the Ostermann experts recommend using the retarder for FSG cleaner. Users can extend the evaporation time by adding it to the FSG cleaner with a mixing ratio between 1:3 and 1:5. This prevents possible striation and streaking. Cleaning after final assembly For the final cleaning of the customer’s finished workpiece, the Ostermann experts recommend the Redocol finish cleaner 61. Being part of the environmentally-friendly ‘greenline’ series as well, the cleaner is suitable for practically every kind of surface, and even for the continuous application on sensitive acrylic surfaces.

Redocol Teclinex One For All may be used to clean the transport tracks of the edgebanding machine as well. That way, annoying marks on high gloss or super matt furniture finishes can be avoided

The highly effective antistatic formula helps repel dust and dirt, leaving behind a shiny resistant surface that provides long-term protection against new dirt accumulations.

Redocol Teclinex One For All from the ‘greenline’ series (here in the laboratory bottle) can be used for all units of the edgebanding machine and ensures a perfect edging finish and milling result

This is how the plunger can for cleaner works: The tray is pushed into the container so that there is no more than the required amount of liquid in the tray. The liquid can then be taken with a cleaning cloth

FP310_Pages.indd 71

Tip for cleaning after final assembly For heavy soiling, spray Finish Cleaner 61 directly onto the surface and leave it. For mild and normal soiling as well as acrylic surfaces, spray the cleaner onto a clean microfibre cloth and wipe the surface clean. For further information on the mentioned cleaning products, type in the search item cleaning into the search field on the Ostermann website. 01905 793550 sales.uk@ostermann.eu www.ostermann.eu

Sikkens Wood Coatings celebrates successful 20-year association with Accoya brand

Increasingly, the innovation that companies deliver to the end user is the product of collaboration where sharing skills, resources and expertise can help both parties to flourish. It’s this very ethos of co-operation that Blackburn-based coatings manufacturer Sikkens Wood Coatings, an AkzoNobel subsidiary, has been embracing with Accsys Technologies which produces the world-renowned timber modification brand Accoya. It’s a success story and relationship that’s been running for over 20 years, dialling back the clock to 1999. Sikkens Wood Coatings was the only coatings tested for use on acetylated wood. It’s a testament to both the quality required and rigorous R&D undertaken by both companies. Paul Brennan UK general manager, AkzoNobel Wood Coatings says: “Our long-running association with the Accoya brand has without doubt helped us to deliver a suite of products aimed at providing long maintenance- free periods to our customers.” In 2015, Accsys Group set up a testing programme for exterior coating outdoor exposure testing to EN927-3 standards at its Arnhem facility. This would forge closer contact to its coating system partners and affirm the promoted coating’s performance longevity. Sikkens Wood Coatings supported the programme by submitting coated samples. After three years continual outdoor exposure the samples were fully inspected and assessed confirming that the warranty statements to be accurate. In 2016 coatings from the Sikkens Wood Coatings range also formed the framework of a ten-year interactive timber and coating

FP310_Pages.indd 72

study carried out on test rigs for uninterrupted exposure to natural weathering in conjunction with the Timber Research and Development Association (TRADA). These results were published recently and showed that significantly longer maintenancefree intervals were possible when high quality coating systems were combined with the stability properties that Accoya delivers. It’s a professional relationship that’s providing true quality and reliability for a host of applications. Justin Peckham, UK sales manager, Accsys Technologies, comments: “Customers are asking for maintenance-free periods of up to ten years and the combination of Accoya and Sikkens wood coating systems make this possible.” The world’s first-ever property to be clad in Accoya, has now proven just how tough and resilient the product is following a successful review eight years after installation. Architect Gordon Aitken chose Accoya cladding for his home near Glenrothes, Fife, after being impressed by the environmentally-friendly wood’s low maintenance and aesthetic qualities. Since the property was built in 2006 with precommercial laboratory-produced Accoya, the cladding has required no maintenance. Initial inspections in 2010 revealed no signs of rot or decay and similar checks recently returned the same results. Gordon says: “I had initially chosen Accoya cladding as I wanted a material that required minimal maintenance but offered high aesthetic qualities to complement the design of the building.” 01254 687950 www.akzonobel.com www.sikkens-wood-coatings.co.uk

76 ADVERTORIAL

Become self-sufficient for heat and electricity from waste wood After leading the way in the promotion of biomass heating and combined heat and power systems throughout the UK since 2012, AFS Biomass has announced the latest technological advance, the generation and storage of hydrogen to be used to generate electricity from hydrogen fuel cells. Hydrogen is the most abundant fuel source on the planet and when used to generate electricity the only emission is water. The most eco-friendly form of energy available which, in combination with a Syngasmart solid biomass CHP unit, will dramatically reduce your carbon footprint. Most companies in the woodworking industry have very large electrical consumption, with high peak demand during working hours and low demand at night and/or week-ends. The normal solution for CHP users has been to export excess electricity to the grid. This can often involve an expensive DNO connection and a reduced payment for the electricity exported. By using the excess generated in low demand periods to generate and store hydrogen, this can be used to generate extra electricity in high demand periods, saving money against the high cost of electricity. Solid biomass CHP, the generation of both heat and electricity from biomass, also qualifies for the RHI scheme. Designed to reward businesses which contribute towards the UK’s carbon reduction targets and payable for 20 years for all the metered eligible heat generated from biomass, it provides a very welcome additional income stream. AFS Biomass offers the SyngaSmart cogeneration system. Manufactured in Italy to exacting standards the SyngaSmart offers an integrated solution for heat and power generation through pyro-gasification, the use of high temperatures in a low oxygen environment to convert biomass into a gas called syngas. This is used to fuel standard internal combustion engines which turn the syngas energy into electric and thermal power.

Hydrogen electrolyser, storage and fuel cell

It is ideal for the woodworking industry which inherently suffers from the punitively high cost of electricity to run CNC machines and more, often in poorly insulated factories requiring space and process heating. All solid wood waste can be used, either as wood chip or as briquettes from poorly shredded waste, sawdust and shavings. So why choose a combined solid biomass CHP and hydrogen system? • Huge, ever-increasing savings against current fossil fuel and electricity costs which continue to rise. • Wood waste disposal savings – create energy from waste rather than pay for its removal. • Mitigate against future carbon taxes. • Enhance green credentials – claim almost carbon neutrality for heating and electricity. • Eligible for the Government RHI (Renewable Heat Incentive) scheme. AFS Biomass is leading the way in the

promotion and implementation of all forms of biomass and hydrogen energy generation and is a major partner with SyngaSmart, one of the most respected and reliable biomass CHP manufacturers in the market today. As one of the few Carbon Trust Accredited Suppliers in the UK, AFS Biomass offers the design, installation and ongoing maintenance to many diverse sectors including furniture and kitchen manufacturers, sawmills, pallet companies and more. References are available on request from a large number of highly satisfied clients. Whether looking for a traditional biomass heating system or for the latest state-of-the-art technology in the field of solid biomass combined heat and power and hydrogen fuel cells, now is the time to act for maximum benefit. Fossil fuel costs continue to rise, carbon taxes become ever-more punitive and the RHI is, for the time being, extremely attractive. Why not join the ever-increasing number of businesses helping themselves and the environment through the adoption of biomass for future energy needs? AFS Biomass is in prime position to help you achieve those goals. For more information, contact AFS Biomass. 0161 302 2851 info@afsbiomass.com www.afsbiomass.com

“I can’t understand why all wood waste generating businesses don’t have one…” The Cheshire Kitchen Company has purchased a new wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology to save money on waste disposal and heating. Matthew Smith, director at The Cheshire Kitchen Company had heard good things about wood waste heaters, so started to undertake some research. He soon realised that, by investing in a wood waste heater, he could burn all the wood offcuts generated from the joinery workshop, plus all the packaging and cardboard waste, so he would no longer need to hire a skip each week, saving the business between £600-£800 a month. Plus, the business would save money on heating, as the 5000ft2 workshop had to be heated by electric heaters in the cold winter months. Matthew says: “Once we started to crunch some numbers, we realised it just made sense. The combined cost of heating and waste disposal could cost the business almost £2000 some months, and we realised that this expense could just disappear if we invested in a wood waste heater, so we found and contacted Wood Waste Technology to organise a site survey and quote…” After reviewing costs and performance, the business purchased a WT10 heater, giving enough spare capacity should a decision be made to extend the business premises at some point in the future. The heater was installed into The Cheshire Kitchen Company’s manufacturing unit by Wood Waste Technology’s experienced engineers. Matthew says: “Having now experienced life with a wood waste heater, I can’t understand why all wood waste generating businesses don’t have one. The heater makes the workshop lovely and warm, so we’ve gone from working in multiple layers to being able to work comfortably in tee-shirts even during the coldest months, plus we’re saving a huge amount of money by reducing our waste

disposal and heating bills. “There aren’t many things you buy that deliver everything that the salespeople promised, but our wood waste heater certainly has! The whole process has been hassle-free, from getting a quote to the installation and delivery. We would highly recommend the products and team at Wood Waste Technology!” Kurt Cockroft says: “Whatever the primary reason for purchase – heat or waste disposal – a wood waste heater is a cost-effective and productive solution for companies that generate waste wood, and some companies get payback on the investment in less than 12 months.”

Wood Waste Technology’s years of expertise in wood waste solutions has helped many companies reduce their waste disposal and heating costs. As well as offering site survey, design, manufacture, installation and on-going maintenance for new units, the company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters, available in various size and specifications to suit all business applications. 01785 250400 www.woodwastetechnology.com www.grossuk.co.uk

Woodturning solutions at any level around the world Hapfo copy lathes have been at the forefront of the woodturning industry for over 40 years and are recognised around the world for solid reliability. There are many lathes working daily productions today after 40 years of use. There are manually operated to motorised, hydraulic driven lathes, to fully computer-controlled CNC lathes, and then there is the fully automatic Challenge – 5000 the perfect choice for high production requirements where the hopper can be loaded, and the lathe will produce the turnings on an industrial scale.

Hapfo CNC lathes have an optional unique Hapfo-developed swivel device that enables the cutting tool to cut at 90° on both sides of the workpiece, developed by Hapfo. This is ideal and highly efficient when producing many short parts from one spindle blank whilst using a fourjaw follower or ring follower to hold the wood securely as it decreases in length. In addition, Hapfo developed a double cutting system to increase performance. The cutter on

the back of the lathe reduces the stock and the cutter on the front of the lathe does the finished profile. Having both cutters on opposing sides also helps stop fine vibration of the workpiece. A Hapfo 7000-CNC demonstration can easily be arranged with G& Specialist Timber, Snuff Mill Lane, Stainton, Penrith, Cumbria CA11 0ES. 01768 891445 info@toolsandtimber.co.uk www.toolsandtimber.co.uk
