Comment Industry, much as with the political landscape, is a constantly shifting environment with new materials, concepts and equipment to enable manufacturers to challenge the markets’ status quo. In this day and age, there is little excuse for poor imagination regarding furniture and joinery design such is a choice of materials and technology now available. The recent German trade shows, Interzum and Ligna, are regular high spots in terms of these developments and Furniture & Joinery Production will bring readers all the news starting in the July issue. In this issue we feature some interesting installations with suppliers working with the likes of Red Rose Furnishings, Claughtons, Cookstown Panel Centre and Ligna Components. All these articles are ideal examples of what businesses can achieve when opting to upgrade machinery and equipment. Elsewhere, a decorative panels, surfacing and coatings feature provides considerable inspiration for manufacturers looking at a wide range of options to finish panels and products for kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and living room furniture. Appropriately, there is now a notably wider choice of environmentally sustainable products available.

6 News OBITUARY

Francis Dalton Francis Dalton, managing director of AL Dalton Ltd, has died at the age of 78 following a short illness. Regarded as one of the true gentlemen of the woodworking machinery sector, he and his late brother, Nigel, were the third generation to enter the family business in Nottingham. In 2016 Francis celebrated 60 years with the company, having first worked as a machinist at Stag Cabinets gaining some valuable experience before joining his father, Vernon, and uncle, Cyril, in 1956. Francis quickly took to the business forging what were to become lifelong relationships with customers, partners and competitors. Although never married, Francis was still very

much a family man. He leaves five nieces and nephews. Alex Dalton, son to Nigel and nephew of Francis, continues as the fourth generation to run the business today. As director and joint owner of Daltons Wadkin with involvement in all aspects from sales to service, Francis continued to work full time in the business up until the last few weeks of his life. Like his ancestors before him, he took a special pride in ensuring that the company offered the very best machinery, aftercare and support. Francis Dalton will be much missed both within Daltons Wadkin and the wider woodworking machinery community.

Spring Fest exhibition success for AMS Advanced Machinery Services (AMS) recent open house event went very well–which was unsurprising, given that the Leicestershire company had some 35 machines primed and ready to demonstrate to visitors. AMS director Stephen Foster reported a steady stream of visitors from the local region, and some making a considerable journey from further afield to visit the event. AMS has already added the new heavy-duty multi-rip saw which had had a very good welcome and it is now joined by the PU12XP straight line edger. With new stock arriving weekly, the 12-year-old business is wellknown for its impressive rebuilt Wadkin planer moulders, Wadkin FSPs, and DMVs; but it was the Wadkin Bursgreen products which took centre stage at the company’s packed showroom. The company supplies a comprehensive range of furniture, woodworking and

FP308_Pages.indd 6

joinery machinery, and is widely recognised for its service set-up, with excellent coverage across the UK. In addition, the company offers installation options, training and machine service and repair. Steve McGloin, AMS director said: “The main machinery in demand were the new multi-rip saw, planer/ moulders and panel saws.” In all, 35 machines were on show – all of them ready to demonstrate to those interested, workshop equipment as well as a Stark tooling exhibition. AMS says that significant business was carried out with customers attending from throughout the UK and Ireland. Space was at a premium and,

although the premises were purpose-designed and built only a short while ago, AMS is planning an extension to both the offices and factory to cope with training demand, machinery rebuilds, spares, servicing and tooling.

For those unable to attend the exhibition, but still wish to know more about Wadkin Bursgreen machinery, or other AMS services, contact the company directly. 0844 044 9949 www.advancedmachinery.co.uk

Daltons Wadkin grows operator training services The woodworking industry has one of the highest accident rates in manufacturing. Daltons Wadkin helps companies mitigate risks and meet legal obligations with certificated operator training courses tailored specifically to customers’ individual needs. It is important for all employers to note the law, as per the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER 98), requires that all workers must receive adequate training, including refresher training. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) states that poor supervision and inadequate training are two of the main causes of accidents in the woodworking industry. The Daltons Wadkin Red Team of trainers deliver a range of courses across the UK and Ireland for both novice learners and experienced operators. “With four full-time trainers we are now one of the largest training organisations in the UK specialising in woodworking machinery,”

comments Daltons Wadkin director Alex Dalton. “Each of our trainers is a time-served machinist, with decades of experience in the industry. Coupled with teaching and assessment qualifications, they are able to effectively deliver relevant hands-on training for machine operators”. The range of courses available from Daltons Wadkin are extensive covering the safe setting and operation of all types and makes of woodworking machinery, portable power tools and abrasive wheels. In addition, specific supervisor training and health and safety manager courses cover other organisational responsibilities for the management of employees using machinery in industrial and educational environments. Detailed training material accompanies each course and is provided to each learner for future reference. Training courses, whether delivered at customers’ own sites or at the Daltons Wadkin training centre in Nottingham, are practical

with operators gathered around the machinery for hands-on learning. “Feedback from our courses is always extremely positive,” comments Alex. “We don’t believe in sitting a group of learners around a laptop for a power point presentation or video. Customers appreciate the fact that our courses are delivered by experienced operators with in-depth working knowledge of the industry.” As a PIABC Quality Assured

training provider customers can be confident of receiving the very highest level or service delivered by the longest-established woodworking machinery specialist in the country. From necessity to added value Filter system specialist, Modesta from The Netherlands, participated in Ligna for the first time together with machine manufacturer Anderson Europe. In doing so, the company focused on raising awareness and spreading knowledge about the (legal) necessity of a proper filter installation. Sales manager Jan Plette explains: “It starts with awareness. Every manufacturer who realises the risks of fire, explosion and any subsequent damage, knows that an

outdated filter installation is not an option.” Assessing risks, capacity and costs “Furniture and woodworking companies have been investing in woodworking machines for a number of years now. Due to the growth in production, the focus is now once again on dust extraction, as a capacity shortage often arises here. In addition, many installations do not comply with legislation and regulations in the field of fire and

explosion protection,” says Jan. “A proper assessment will discover whether adaptation of an existing installation will suffice or total replacement is needed. The operational costs can also make a huge difference here – the new negative pressure systems with cascading fans can offer high energy savings, which gives added value to a new filter system.” QEX quality mark Modesta has been designing, building and installing filter systems since 1948 and recently invited around 30 risk experts to its factory in Putten, the Netherlands. Modesta

FP308_Pages.indd 8

informed the experts about the latest developments in the field of fire safety and ATEX in dust extraction. “The legislation and regulations are not only very extensive, but also very abstract,” explains Jan. “There is a great need for practical knowledge about fire and explosion safety. All Modesta filter installations have the QEX quality mark. QEX stands for Quality Extraction Systems and guarantees the installation complies with legislation and regulations, including ATEX and EN12779.” 01138 680247 info@modestafilters.co.uk www.modestafilters.co.uk

Dids Macdonald OBE installed as new Master of The Furniture Makers’ Company Dids Macdonald OBE, CEO of the design and intellectual property membership and campaigning organisation Anti Copying in Design (ACID), has been installed as the 58th Master of The Furniture Makers’ Company, the City of London livery company and charity for the furnishing industry. Dids, who succeeded Hayden Davies, is the second female master in the company’s history. The annual installation ceremony took place in May at St Mary-leBow Church in the City of London, followed by a commemorative dinner in the Egyptian Room at Mansion House, the official residence of the Lord Mayor of London.

Around 220 guests were in attendance to celebrate the new master’s installation and were joined by City dignitaries including the Lord Mayor of London Alderman Peter Estlin, Lady Mayoress Lindy Estlin and Alderman and Sheriff Amanda Vincent Keaveny. Dids Macdonald OBE, Master of The Furniture Makers’ Company, said: “To represent the furnishings industry as Master of The Furniture Makers’ Company is not only an honour but a huge opportunity to champion the outstanding work of this talented sector.” In a speech to guests, the master announced that one of her focuses for the year would be increasing awareness of the company’s welfare

support provision to industry workers through the launch of a new campaign called One Step at a Time. She added: “I plan on raising awareness about our charitable giving so that every single individual knows where to come if a curveball strikes. As well as encouraging more women to join our ranks, I will do everything I can to raise awareness about the looming skills gap crisis.” The evening also included a ceremony for The Christopher Claxton Stevens Prize and a Lifetime Achievement Award. The Christopher Claxton Stevens Prize was presented to Marc Fish for the Vortex Table. The Lifetime Achievement Award was awarded to Sir Terence Conran CH, FCSD.

Mighton’s machinery proves popular in new partnership Leading hardware specialist Mighton Products has entered into an new partnership with International Woodworking Machinery (IWM) – a move that makes the Newark-based machinery supplier the sole UK distributor of Mighton’s professional joinery machines. The two firms began working together in October 2018 when IWM enhanced its existing offering by including Mighton’s Scribe-It and X-Cut machines. Scribe-It is semi-automatic and used to end scribe timber profiles, while X-Cut glides through beading, producing perfect cross-joints, and improving throughput and efficiency. The decision to adopt both models was borne through the synchronicity between Mighton’s

machine quality and IWM’s business model to supply specialist woodworking machinery to leading UK joinery manufacturers. Keen to protect the integrity of the brand, IWM managing director Ian Brown is known for being selective over which companies it partners: “Mighton is renowned throughout the industry as a market leader, so we knew we were joining with a fellow business whose morals and values matched our own. “We place customers’ requirements at the heart of our service and strive to provide machinery that is a joy to use. By thinking like a joiner, we ensure the machinery we sell meets every need, and complements and simplifies the work undertaken.”

IWM has received encouraging levels of interest from the wider market and is able to facilitate requests to sample beading testing as both machines are set up for demonstrations in its onsite showroom. Ian continues: “Partnerships are all about utilising one another’s strengths. IWM has supplied machinery for more than a decade, with our in-house experience spanning a far greater timeframe. Mighton is a reputable name to be associated with, so we hope that Mike and his team are seeing the benefits of the choice his company has made.” www.mightonproducts.com www.iwmachines.co.uk

Festool roadshow – the chance to preview SawStop technology live in action This month Festool will be bringing its new Festool table saw with SawStop technology to Festool Roadshow. Touring the UK and Ireland from 12th to the 26th June, the Festool Roadshow will offer a unique opportunity for visitors to see demonstrations of the new table saw with SawStop technology live in action. This will be the first time ever this groundbreaking new table saw has been shown in the UK or Ireland. Leo Zirkler, head of sales at Festool says: “Here at Festool, we are incredibly excited for the roadshow to be touring the UK and Ireland. The roadshow has always been a fantastic forum for people to truly experience the Festool brand

FP308_Pages.indd 14

and try out our products. We are thrilled that this year we can offer our customers the additional advantage of visiting, with this preview of the new table saw with SawStop technology.” SawStop technology works using a sensor which registers when human flesh is near to the blade of the saw. Within just five milliseconds of flesh being recognised by the sensor, it stops the blade from moving – preventing serious injuries. This innovative technology keeps users safe, which is why the introduction of SawStop to the UK and Ireland is so important. The roadshow will allow visitors to really test the range of Festool products and discover the benefits of using these high-quality power tools.

Festool specialists and trainers will be on hand to answer questions and offer advice for your needs. Visitors can also take advantage of free tool PAT tests from specialist Festool service engineers who will be offering the service throughout the roadshow. In addition, all registered visitors will be entered into prize draws for the chance to win prizes, including the grand prize of £3000 worth of Festool products. Boost crosscutting productivity with SalvaStop from Daltons Wadkin Developed and manufactured by Salvamac, the SalvaStop 100 is the latest evolution in programable stop technology. When used in conjunction with a new or existing crosscut saw the SalvaStop will reduce labour costs, eliminate expensive measuring errors and increase efficiency. Daltons Wadkin director Alex Dalton comments: “Compared to traditional measuring methods that require the operator to manually set a length stop for each cut, SalvaStop brings an instant boost to productivity and accuracy. Our customers have welcomed the simplicity and quality of the system. SalvaStop replaces manual turnover stops or laborious tape measurement allowing the operator to work quickly and efficiently.” A large 7in colour touch screen provides the operator with an intuitive graphical interface for operating the SalvaStop. An operator can be trained in a matter of seconds, working in one of three modes; Jog, Single, Cycle. Jog is used for increasing the stop position by a set amount incrementally. Single allows one-off dimensions to be entered

FP308_Pages.indd 16

with programmable hot keys to recall common lengths. In Cycle mode up to 100 cutting lists can be programmed for continual production work. Cutting lists can be entered by the operator directly at the machine, or remotely by an office-based worker. After each

cut the SalvaStop automatically repositions itself ready for the next cut. Available in a range of working lengths from 1.4m to 5.4m, the foundation of the SalvaStop is an aluminium beam that provides a smooth fence against which workpieces can slide, and houses the high capacity pusher

transmission system. A high-tensile toothed belt, reinforced with 34 individual steel strips connects the servo drive positioning motor with the pusher. The servo drive operates in a closed loop, receiving continual feedback on every movement to maintain maximum working accuracy even under heavy load. To exploit the full potential of SalvaStop, combine it with a Salvamac Classic semi-automatic crosscut saw for safe, efficient 90° crosscutting. Once the cycle is engaged, a pneumatic pressure beam descends enclosing the saw blade and clamping the timber securely during the cut. The cutting speed can be adjusted to suit different cutting depths and timber species with the whole process taking just a second to complete with no physical effort by the operator. For more information or to arrange a working demonstration of the Salvamac SalvaStop in combination with the Classic crosscut saw contact sole distributor Daltons Wadkin. 0115 986 5201 info@daltonswadkin.com www.daltonswadkin.com

Mighton and the Angel Ventlock support Child Safety Week 2019 Mike Derham, chairman of Mighton Products talks about forthcoming Child Safety Week, and how the Angel Ventlock system helps to dramatically reduce the number of accidents in the home involving young children, and open windows. Children are curious, inquisitive, daring, and the light of our lives as parents. Their innocence beholds us to them, yet equally, brings myriads of potential danger. Playing with toys, eating their first meal, even napping in a car seat – these can all be fraught with challenge and concern. Our role as adults is to be their greatest protector, but what if we too can’t always imagine the hazards lurking within our homes? The 3rd-9th June 2019 is Child Safety Week; an annual campaign which aims to highlight the areas of our lives and living spaces that children often approach with the least caution. Promoted by the Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT), the messages are all about raising awareness regarding the risks of child accidents, and how to stop them happening. CAPT is the UK’s leading charity working to reduce the number of children and young people killed, disabled or seriously hurt in accidents. This year, the theme of their flagship campaign is Family life today: where’s the risk?

“To imagine a child falling from a window at any height is truly, a parent’s very worst nightmare. Thankfully, protective measures like the Angel Ventlock® system can be fitted to help prevent such accidents.” Supported by a broad spectrum of household names, Mighton Products is proud to join them in their endeavour to bring child safety to the fore. Approximately 4000 children are injured in incidents involving open windows each year, and tragically, 15-20 of these are fatal. Most families affected by these events have children under the age of four – a time when the excitement of exploring a new environment is all-too luring, and little hands and feet act faster than we sometimes realise. To imagine a child falling from a window at any height is truly, a parent’s very worst nightmare. Thankfully, protective measures like the Angel Ventlock® system can be fitted to help prevent such

FP308_Pages.indd 18

accidents, by limiting the window to opening just four inches or less. Its simple design is easily mounted to both new or existing sash units and unlike other similar devices, doesn’t require the use of a key to open the window fully in case of emergencies. Mighton developed Angel Ventlock in response to a customer query about another Ventlock product at a Window and Door Manufacturers Association (WDMA) event in the United States. US building codes exceed all requirements in the United Kingdom and Europe, something which prompted Mighton to work on the American Society for Testing & Materials (ASTM) Sub-Committee to develop new standards of safety. Since that time, hundreds

of thousands of Angel Ventlock systems have been sold across the world, each recognised by the newly-introduced ASTM F2090-2008, 2010, 2013 and 2017 regulations. Mighton, with other supporters of Child Safety Week, hope to remind parents that with every wonderful accomplishment small people make in their learning and development, come potential new hazards. Its plea is for it to continually assess the safety of their environments and respond accordingly. More information about Child Safety Week topics can be found at www.capt.org.uk/child-safety-week, or by following #childsafetyweek on social media. www.mightonproducts.com

The ecological answer to interior design trends Exclusive to James Latham in the UK, Decospan’s inspiring collection of Querkus veneers offer architects and designers an ecological option of using oak with a contemporary twist. In a unique production process, Querkus combines both FSC® certified European white oak and reclaimed oak timbers, which captures and enhances the beauty, colour, markings and structure of solid wood along with the many advantages of a veneered panel. A European leader in premium veneer processing, Decospan use strictly selected, slow-growing oaks from controlled and regulated growth zones in Croatia. Timber is cut into veneers, which are glued together to produce a single, solid picture. This makes it possible to use various thicknesses of veneer, allowing flexibility and customisation for designers to select a panel that meets exactly their colour, pattern, touch and budgetary needs. Using Decospan’s unique and innovative veneer matching techniques, boards are created that give designers unprecedented choice in a wood panel product. Wire brushing and patented ‘saw effect’ scratching options impart character, texture and authenticity so that no matter how they are finished, Querkus panels look natural, adding dimension, depth and texture to any project. Panels are supplied untreated so that a wood stain or varnish can be applied according to taste and specification. Wood oil also offers optimum protection, while retaining the veneer’s natural feel and warmth. Group veneer product champion for James Latham, Dan Mahoney, comments: “Querkus is a sustainably designed product that combines authentic materials with engineered stability. With four eye-catching and distinctive ranges in the collection, including Oak Natural, Oak Vintage, Oak Smoked and Oak Retro, reaction from architects and designers has been really positive, and we are seeing more and more specifications coming through, particularly for high-end residential, retail, commercial and hospitality projects.” As well as Querkus, James Latham’s exclusive collection of Decospan’s added value products also includes the Shinnoki, Nørdus, and Look’likes collections. 22 Installations West Yorkshire-based woodwaste extraction specialist Dust Control Systems, now part of Absolent Group, came to the rescue of Red Rose Furnishings following an incident where an inattentive delivery driver reversed a large furniture van into the company’s filter unit.

DCS delivers rosy future for furniture maker Red Rose Furnishings is a family-run business that embraces a long history of furniture manufacturing in the former Lancashire mill town of Blackburn, and has established an extensive clientele across the UK and Ireland. The company has gained a reputation for quality craftsmanship and, as well as manufacturing frames for some well-known names in the upholstery industry, offers its own range of both traditional and modern designs. Although Red Rose’s sofas are handmade, the factory houses several saws and other high-speed machine tools which are in constant use and create a significant volume of dust and woodwaste. “The old filter had been working at capacity, but was still doing its job very effectively”, says managing director Arif Kola. “It was quite a blow when the old filter got damaged – our insurance company wanted the unit to be repaired, but I wasn’t convinced that a patched-up, 20-year-old filter unit would be able to provide the extraction capacity we needed, and I was concerned that it wouldn’t be too long before we had to cover the cost of a new replacement.” Ray Townley, area sales manager for Dust Control Systems Ltd (DCS) continues the story: “Following the incident with the lorry, Mr. Kola contacted DCS for advice and so I arranged to visit the factory to assess the damage. It was obvious to me on first sight that the aged unit was beyond safe repair and I advised Arif that DCS would only be able to provide a quotation for supply and installation of a like for like replacement. With Arif’s permission, I contacted the loss adjuster directly to explain how the impact with the overhanging fan enclosures had warped the filter body, causing many of the sealed joints to open up, and that any attempt at repair would be futile, rendering the filter ineffectual, unsafe and a potential fire hazard.” Mr Townley also provided the insurer with supporting documentary evidence, including information on European ATEX directives regarding the safety of equipment intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres and, thankfully for Red Rose Furnishings, the insurer reversed its decision and the company was

FP308_Pages.indd 22

Although it’s fairly labour intensive, the manufacturing process at Red Rose allows flexibility in production

given the go-ahead to place an order with DCS. The replacement unit is an NFSZ3000 2HJLR Rotary Valve Filter – virtually the same footprint as the old filter but, to avoid the possibility of similar damage occurring in the future, it’s configured with the regeneration fans and access gantry at the end of the unit. Also, instead of filtered woodwaste being transferred to a large skip for disposal, it’s now stored in a large silo which in turn feeds a wasteto-energy boiler. “We purchased the silo and boiler at auction,” says Arif Kola, “but, although we were filling a large container with waste every week, we hadn’t got round to connecting them to the extraction system. “However, with DCS engineers on-site to replace the filter unit we had the perfect opportunity to get everything connected and working – we’re now getting free heat for the factory and no longer need to pay for waste disposal.” Although the new filter unit is the same physical size as the old one, and the existing 22kW main extraction fan has been retained, the new unit is capable of filtering over 2000m3 more dust-laden air per hour than the old one. The increase in extraction volume is simply down to improvements in filter technology

Internally, DCS fitted a magnetic trap to protect the system from damage by tramp metal

and filer media over the last 20 years, but this upgrade gives Red Rose some spare extraction capacity, providing the opportunity to add or replace machinery in the future with no worries about the extraction system’s capacity. “I can’t thank Ray Townley enough for going the extra mile for us”, says Arif Kola. “Despite a few sleepless nights following the accident, the effort put in by Ray, and the efficiency of the DCS installation team, has given us peace of mind for the foreseeable future.” 0800 040 7116 www.dcslimited.co.uk

The new filter unit has an extraction capacity of 18,360mÂł/hr and waste is discharged via rotary valve.

Regeneration fans and access gangway are now safely located on the end of the unit

The damaged body was beyond repair, but DCS engineers connected the new filter unit to Red Rose’s existing 22kW extraction fan

24 Installations When commercial furniture specialist, Claughtons, began trading last year, refurbished machinery specialist, Ferwood, sourced and installed a used machine that met the new company’s exact specification and budget within just two weeks.

The right start from Ferwood

“As a start-up business, we wanted to hit the ground running. This meant getting the right machinery in place quickly and efficiently,” begins Jeff Attwood, operations manager for Claughtons. “We knew the products we would be manufacturing and the materials we would be using, so when it came to shortlisting a machine, we knew the exact specification we were after. “We needed a beam saw that was capable of cutting up to 100 sheets of 18mm Trespa and 25mm thick MDF measuring 2800 x 2070mm MFC each week. We also needed a tech and printer package that could run with our existing CAD software. We were not set on a particular make or model but, as a new business, we didn’t have the means to invest in a brand new machine.” Having worked with Ferwood before, Jeff was fully aware of the scale of readily-available machines in Ferwood’s inventory. “I’d sourced used woodworking machinery from Ferwood

FP308_Pages.indd 24

in a previous job and I’ve always found them easy to work with. I knew they could offer a prompt service and had the means to get the job done quickly and efficiently. It seemed like the perfect fit for us: they could find us a machine that ticked all the boxes and get it delivered and installed almost immediately.” After browsing Ferwood’s online inventory, Jeff purchased a front loading Holzma HPP11/32 Profiline CNC beam panel saw. The machine came under Ferwood’s Ferwood Functional brand, which sees machines checked by an independent specialist during the installation process. “This approach suited us perfectly,” says Jeff. “It meant that as well as offering us peace of mind when it came to the machine’s performance, the lead time was exceptionally fast. In fact, the whole process from initially viewing the machine on Ferwood’s website to it being fully installed was only two weeks. It was a massive selling point for us.”

The complete installation, which was carried out by an experienced Holzma engineer, took just three days, with introductory training given to Claughtons’ machinists. Jeff says: “At the point of installation, the factory wasn’t fully up and running, which made the logistics much easier. “We had the extraction system and electrics already in place and we weren’t restricted by production deadlines or the threat of downtime. It was a sleek performance and the end result was a fully functional machine that was ready to be put to good use. What more could you ask for?” Sixth months on, Claughton Office Equipment is set to work with Ferwood for a second time. Jeff explains: “The whole experience of working with Ferwood has been easy. The machine has been reliable – we’ve had no nasty surprises – and it does exactly what we need it to do. From previous experience, we knew that we could count on Ferwood to deliver tried and tested machinery and offer us an honest and reliable service. “They did exactly that. That’s why we’ve chosen to work with Ferwood again. We’re now in a position to grow our business and we need more machinery to do it. We know Ferwood deliver on their promises and because of this, it’s a relationship we see continuing. We would highly recommend them.” 0113 286 6689 www.ferwoodgroup.com @FerwoodGroupUK

Intorex CNC lathe boosts production at Ligna Components Ligna Components based in Ilkeston, Derbyshire, has recently installed a new Intorex CNB 1500 CNC lathe to help the company increase its production of turned furniture parts which it sells throughout the UK. The company was set up by Steve Rowe five years ago after spending the previous 20 years as a director at Breaston Chair Frames. Ligna Components specialises in offering bespoke turnings for chairs, sofas and tables, in a variety of different timbers and sprayed finishes to suit customers’ individual production requirements, with the emphasis on being able to produce short batch runs with a quick turnaround. When the company initially set up, Ligna was using two standard hydraulic copy lathes which served it very well for a number of years – and one is still in use now. However, Steve had previous experience of the benefits that CNC technology can bring and realised that eventually he would need to invest in a CNC lathe. As a long-established customer of lathe specialist Intorex, he had no hesitation in making contact again to see what machines it could offer. After discussions with Intorex owner Jordi Teixido, and the firm’s UK agent Guy Stanley of JJ Smith, an Intorex CNB 1500 twin gouge machine was proposed. As standard it is equipped with two independently controlled CNC copiers, with the first for roughing out and the second for finishing, along with two rear hydraulicallycontrolled dowel knives. The big advantage of the CNC lathe is that

Quick set-ups and high quality turnings thanks to CNC programming

FP308_Pages.indd 26

A variety of turned parts produced on the Intorex CNB 1500 CNC lathe

as no samples or templates are needed, set-up times are very quick making the machine ideal for short batch runs. Profiles to be turned are quickly and easily created using the resident windows-based IntorEDIT design software, with the ability to either program the machine

remotely on an office PC or alternatively on the machine controller, which incorporates the latest digital technology enabling machine cycles to be optimised. In addition, thanks to the CNC variable control of the spindle RPM through the program, and the CNC control of the cutting gouges, it is possible to achieve excellent definition and quality of the turned component, with repeat machining accuracy. Steve comments: “The lathe is working extremely well and it has certainly helped us in terms of giving our customers high quality bespoke turnings with a quick delivery time.” He adds: “As has always been the case with Intorex, the machines are built to the highest quality and their after sales service and support is second to none.” The CNB is just one of a family of three CNC lathes that Intorex produces, the others being the semi-automatic CKI 1500 or 2500 – and with the CKX 600 1600mm, a fully automatic hopperfed model for high volume production. Options include an additional fourth CNCcontrolled axis meaning that turnings produced can be fluted. twisted, milled or finish-sanded. Company reduces manufacturing costs by purchasing wood waste boiler Auto-Trail VR Limited is the UK’s leading dedicated motorhome manufacturer, with over 35 years’ manufacturing experience designing and building motorhomes in the UK. The management team at Auto-Trail was recommended to speak to Wood Waste Technology by a supplier, as the company was spending around £16,000 a year on skips to remove wood waste, and around £26,000 a year on gas heating for the workplace. Steve Moverley, Auto Trail’s director of design and development contacted Wood Waste Technology for more details, looking for information about the types of waste that could be utilised, boiler efficiency, emissions dates and expected return-on-investment predictions. Wood Waste Technology’s revolutionary boiler, the WWT209 is Enhanced Capital Allowance listed, and remains one of the most efficient wood waste boilers available in the UK, having been designed and tested to BSEN303-52012, the highest standard for efficiency and emissions. The boiler has been independently tested at 92.4% efficiency, allowing it to qualify for the Energy Technology List (ETL). Businesses that purchase products listed on the ETL benefit from 100% first year enhanced capital allowances on their expenditure. The WWT209 was also the first in the UK to be declared fully compliant with the RHI (Renewable Heat Incentive) scheme without the need for additional flue gas filtration equipment (significantly reducing the investment and ongoing maintenance costs of a RHI compliant boiler). The boiler offers the largest possible heat output under the Environment Agency’s U4 and D6 permit (under 50kg/hr) plus it does not require a local authority part B permit (England & Wales) which saves money on the initial investment as well as the yearly testing requirements. More information available at www.gov.uk/local-authority-environmentalpermit. As a Carbon Trust Accredited supplier, Wood Waste Technology’s boiler can also operate in clean air zones under the Clean Air Act, as it meets the two highest standards in emissions regulations, so is able to be used in even the sternest of jurisdictions in the UK. Wood Waste Technology also has a 100% success rate in RHI applications for companies burning chipboard and MDF. The high efficiency of the boiler helps it provide up to 20-25% more heat from your wood, and therefore more heat on your RHI Heat meter, leading to a faster payback and warmer factory and offices. The Government’s RHI offers substantial

FP308_Pages.indd 28

financial benefits to companies that invest in new biomass technology. For example, companies with successful RHI applications could earn around £11,500-£17,500 a year (with a cost of living increase each year) for 20 years, dependent upon a number of other factors. Once the team at Auto-Trail understood that the company could make a return on the investment in less than 36 months, an order for a WWT209 automatic wood waste heater was placed. Wood Waste Technology’s specialist engineers installed the boiler, and the Auto Trail team was very impressed how all the items were installed with minimal disruption to the busy manufacturing facility. The company also purchased a monster GAZ132 shredder and magnetic conveyor from Wood Waste Technology, the UK official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters. This shredder allows whole pallets and CNC remains from boards 1220mm wide by 2440mm long to be quickly turned in to wood chips, and all metal from screws and nails to be removed automatically. Steve Moverley says: “It’s absolutely brilliant. I wish we’d invested in one several years ago when we first heard about them. The shredder gives us the added flexibility to burn more wood waste that would otherwise need to be disposed of and produce more heat. “The team at Wood Waste Technology has been excellent, from helping us make a decision about buying the right heater, through to the installation and after service.

We’re very pleased with the RHI return we’ve received, which is actually more than double the amount that was estimated, as Wood Waste Technology prefer to under-estimate the anticipated returns to clients, rather than overpromise. We can’t recommend the company highly enough.” Everyone in the production facility is delighted with the warmth the wood waste heater puts out into the 40,000ft2 area. The boiler is working so effectively that the system’s six 54kW hot air convection fans that were originally installed in the base installation were recently extended to add two further 54kW fan heater units into other production areas that were originally heated with gas heaters. Wood Waste Technology’s years of expertise in wood waste solutions have helped many companies reduce their waste disposal and heating costs. As well as offering site survey, design, manufacture, installation and on-going maintenance for new units, the company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition to being the UK’s official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, the company is also a distributor for Putzmaus boiler tube cleaning systems – a powerful but gentle routine maintenance solution that is quick and easy to use and helps to increase boiler efficiency and lower operating costs. 01785 250400 www.woodwastetechnology.com www.grossuk.co.uk www.putzmaus.co.uk

Cookstown Panel Centre gains cutting advantage with Homag UK Based in an 85,000ft2 facility in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, is the £10m turnover business, Cookstown Panel Centre. The company, established in 1983, has always insisted on sourcing the finest materials and machinery to produce its renowned range of kitchen products. “Our customers demand top quality products,” explains managing director, Gerry Mallon. He continues: “That’s why we buy the best materials we can and when it comes to machinery, Homag is always our first port of call. “The relationship with Homag began over 25 years ago when I first met Derek Reid, the company’s representative here in Ireland. Straightaway, I was impressed with Derek’s approach and knowledge of the woodworking industry. “Over time, we’ve built up a really strong rapport and his in-depth understanding of our business has gone from strength to strength. Derek doesn’t pull any punches, so when we ask his advice we know we can trust him to give us not only his honest opinion, but also a solution that is the very best for our business.” Time to sharpen the saw “In 2018 it became apparent that we would need to upgrade one of our beam saws to enable us to satisfy the increasing demand for our products. We wanted to improve our efficiency and the accuracy of our production whilst at the same time maintaining the reliability and continuity.

Sawteq B-300 with integrated lifting table at Cookstown Panel Centre – efficient, accurate and reliable processing

“‘Lead times are coming down all the time and it would be disastrous for our business if we couldn’t deliver what they want, when they want it. Gone are the days when you could say to the customer: ‘It will be delivered in three weeks.’ That just won’t wash now – people expect product to be ready in a few days at the most, even if they are bespoke items. “Having made the decision to invest in a new beam saw we spoke first with Derek and asked him to come back with a proposal and specification for a beam saw. We explained that we wanted a solution that would not only satisfy our current demands, but would also be able to cope with future growth.” Homag Sawteq B-300 with integrated lifting table “Although we have a long-standing relationship with Homag, we are conscious not to overlook other options that might be available in the market. In this instance, however, the solution

Homag Magi-cut software – quick and easy production

FP308_Pages.indd 29

Derek came up with, a Homag Sawteq B-300 with integrated lifting table, made the most sense in every way. “The saw has all the latest technology from Homag. It can handle large 4.2m panels and delivers short production times and high throughput due to automatic feeding via the lifting table. For our operation, the lifting table is essential; most of our products are cut from 2.8m boards which are stacked onto the lifting table by fork lift truck, thus avoiding manual handling.” Efficiency, accuracy and reliability “Historically, we have used the Magi-cut software in our business. It enables us to drive the production process from the offices, rather than the factory floor. The Magi-cut software is easy-to-use and integrates seamlessly with the Homag saws. “Using this software enables us to plan efficient cutting processes and we can optimise waste and systematically lower the overall costs for cutting. It gives us full control of costs and is quick and easy to use.” Feeding the edge banders “With the increased volume of bespoke products of varying shapes and sizes, it is vital that our beam saws can maintain high throughputs. This is not only to maximise the potential of our two latest Homag edge banders, but also to enable us to meet the spikes in demand that are part of everyday business pressures in our serviceorientated world. “Because the new saw is much more userfriendly and is packed with the latest technology, it is far more efficient and accurate. It has enabled us to maintain and improve our service to customers. “The Sawteq B-300 does what it says on the tin. It’s what you would expect from the world’s largest woodworking company: a reliable, highly accurate and super-efficient saw. We believe it will pay for itself within two years and so we’re more than happy with it,” concludes Gerry Mallon. Demonstrating optimum competence in adhesives and coatings at Ligna

Kleiberit exhibited a comprehensive range of new developments and innovations at the recent Ligna event. The main topics were new fields of application in surface finishing with the Kleiberit HotCoating® technology, for both indoor and outdoor use, and high gloss lamination using the flat lamination process with PUR hotmelt adhesives. In addition, Kleiberit presented an extensive range of ME (micro emission) PUR adhesives in various theme-based displays. Interesting and technically challenging application solutions, eg for profile wrapping, edgebanding, flat lamination, and complete line process, was the primary focus. Solutions for surface finishing, flat lamination, profile wrapping and edgebanding by Kleiberit ME (Micro Emission) PUR adhesive technology The Kleiberit stand was again the marketplace for practical live communication. Three lines were running continuously so that visitors could experience surface finishing under real conditions. For example, a line for finishing digitally printed roll-material in the HotCoating process was in use. In the future, it will be possible to coat materials with widths up to 1.5m wide, which gives users completely new possibilities in high quality wrapping of components, such as doors. On a Compact-Line, high quality transparent high gloss films were shown being bonded with a PUR hotmelt developed specifically for the process, and the classic HotCoating

FP308_Pages.indd 30

line produced both high gloss and super matt finishes which will be embossed for structure in another process. This impressive technology is a true highlight in surface finishing, as the flexible HotCoating functional layer doesn’t crack like when using classic lacquers. For the first time at Ligna, Kleiberit chose to focus on its adhesive solutions in ME quality. Under the title ‘The future is now’, hotmelt adhesives for various applications were offered, which definitely made an impact in terms of user benefits. The products feature highest bonding properties, combined with safe and easy handling, as well as environmentally friendliness and no labelling requirements. In proactive discussions with users, and with regard to use considering the REACH discussion, this is one of the highlight topics for which Kleiberit offers solutions and products. These solutions were being clearly presented in themebased displays, such as flat lamination, profile wrapping or edgebanding. The entire program was complemented with new adhesive formulations for flat lamination of different materials, eg for the production of doors, finger jointing of load-bearing components, as well as reliable production of LVT design flooring, and also feature the service and product range for demanding interior finishing. Visitors were also able to participate in guided tours where the key topic was smart surface technology. www.kleiberit.com

Matching edgings to the Forbo Desktop surfaces

Linoleum is a traditional material which is once again popular in furniture construction. Due to the high demand, Ostermann has now developed ABS edgings that match the Desktop surfaces of Forbo furniture linoleum perfectly. The high-quality, slightly elastic furniture linoleum has a pleasant, unique feel. Furthermore, it has anti-static, slightly fungicide and bactericidal properties. Therefore, it is a real trend material for public buildings, office spaces and surgeries as well as in private furniture construction. It is available from Ostermann in many appealing colours. Perfectly matched feel For numerous standard colours within the Desktop collection, Ostermann has just developed and personally matched the relevant ABS edgings. These are not only a perfect match in terms of colour, but also reflect the special feel of the surface with their unobtrusive velvet finish. The edgings are available in the standard dimensions 23, 33, 43 and 100 x 1 mm. The edgings specialist will be happy to send a sample swatch on demand.

Velvety-matt surface with a special feel The velvet structure is a fairly calm surface finish with an unobtrusive, filigree feel. The matt surface with its subtle and calm structure is quite resistant to scratches, smudges and stains, and therefore perfectly suited even for furniture elements with higher exposure. Edgings from 1m, within 24 hours With its familiar fast delivery service for stock articles, Ostermann supplies edgings made from ABS, melamine, acrylate, aluminium and solid wood, in every length starting from one metre, and in every width up to 100mm. Europe’s largest range of edgings comprises more than 12,000 edgings to match the board surfaces of more than 70 board suppliers. All information on the above-mentioned edgings can be found when typing in the search item highlights052019 on the Ostermann website. s.parsons@ostermann.eu 01905 793550 www.ostermann.eu

Major enhancements in post-processed simulation, automation, and advanced five-axis

More best-in-class technology in Alphacam 2020.0 One of the major highlights of the latest release of Alphacam from Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence’s production software business, is enhancements to the post-processor engine, delivering what is described as best-in-class cutting edge technology. Brand manager Hector Henry says: “We can confidently back up that claim, as the enhancements mean the post-processor engine directly configures and deploys a simulation session, resulting in more realistic motion, as well as the ability to support cycles such as M6, and additional hardware that has previously been under-utilised or ignored. This new functionality is truly an Industry first and will surely to become a new standard.” The Automation suite has been enhanced, improving the user’s experience and productivity when creating and deploying job configurations. Whether setting up a first automation job, or whether the user is involved in complex and dynamic environments, he says the new Setup Wizards will make short work of daily production tasks. Regarding solids machining, specifically machining solid faces directly, he says most industry packages are only concerned with

FP308_Pages.indd 36

extracting features from solids. “But Alphacam sets a new standard by allowing direct interaction with them. Previously, we enhanced our solids interaction by allowing users to saw a solid face directly. The Rough/Finish command (profiling) now allows the user to directly select and machine a solid face. And if your machine supports tool compensation on custom orientations (planes), this option provides the ability to create precision parts with minimal effort, via the use of G41/G42.” Advanced five-axis functionality has been updated to include numerous improvements. Two new key features include the ability to integrate the Toolpath Optimiser into a core cycle which can then be stored in a machining style and deployed with Automation; and the Advanced five-axis functionality has been updated to include Barrel Mill and Double Profile Tools. Improvements in Swarf machining, multi-axis roughing and toolpath smoothing are also included in Alphacam 2020.0. The geometry offset command is now intelligent and dynamic, making all operations more productive, whether the user wants to simply retain attributes and information on the

geometry, or to completely re-assign machining cycle parameters to a newly created offset. “This new feature delivers an intuitive and simple way of changing toolpaths for everything from simple tasks such as passing associative/dynamic profile machining data, to complex ones including re-assigning a boundary to a 3D surfacing method,” says Hector Henry. Regarding ordering and productivity tools enhancements, he says it is sometimes necessary to control the sequence of events and toolpath order with great care and precision, maybe requiring a preferred machining sequence to be added due to special considerations, such as hardware difficulties or lack of part hold-down. “This new feature provides a simple, productive and effective way to set a user-defined order in seconds.” In conclusion, he says Alphacam 2020.0 contains numerous key features. These are the main ones which will be essential in improving productivity for customers working across the metalworking, woodworking, plastics and stone industries. Full details of all the updates in this latest release of the software can be found on the Alphacam website. www.alphacam.com

Mighton launching its latest with a fresh new catalogue Hardware specialist Mighton Products has launched its newest core product catalogue, showing more ranges than ever before. Designed with the joiner in mind, everything about this substantial catalogue has been given a contemporary makeover. Flick past the contents and readers will find the aptly-named Knowledge Hub, an innovative addition that includes the Anatomy of a Sash Window, the background to Secured by Design and a comprehensive Guide to Fitting Weatherproofing. Mighton regularly receives questions from joiners that are similar in nature, and so have addressed these in this quick reference tool. For queries with more complexity, the online knowledge base and Mighton’s insightful customer services team are both on hand to fill in the gaps. Also featured for the first time is a new tooling section, bringing Mighton’s finest array of implements to grind, round, cut, engrave and scribe, to the fore. These, like the remainder of the spring 2019 edition, are grouped in an efficient layout and are easily navigable through the use of elegant colour coding and simple page tabs. Then there’s Mighton’s latest security offering;

six pages dedicated to the Avia secure smart lock. A star product at many of this year’s trade shows, the Apple HomeKit-based multipoint device has been met with huge applause due to its advanced technology and ease of installation. Fitted to the internal side, Avia is compatible as a stylish retrofit or addition to a new door; its military-grade 256-bit encryption giving homeowners absolute confidence that their homes and loved ones are protected. While the latest release contains almost everything a tradesman might need, Mighton has preserved its dual catalogue offering by maintaining a separate publication purely for paint. Also refreshed for 2019, this includes the full range of Mighton Ankerstuy exterior, interior and specialist paints and stains, plus a new unveiling… Colour matchable primers are Mighton Ankerstuy’s centrepiece. Helping to keep the final finish looking new for longer, scuffs and scratches go undetected as coloured layers go deeper, rather than topping a traditional white basecoat. Consumers will be pleased to know that once again, all shades can be Exact™ Colour Matched on unrivalled lead in times. The final addition is a treasure trove of ancillary decorating items – adhesives, brushes, filling

knives and paint kettles all complementing the superb Mighton Ankerstuy range. With what’s believed to be a first for the joinery sector, Mighton is also offering free delivery for most orders over £99, with next day delivery guaranteed or your money back – applicable throughout Great Britain. As next day delivery has proven to be so important to all trade customers, Mighton has structured a range of delivery options to fully cater for virtually every scenario imaginable, with paid delivery options starting at just £3. www.mightonproducts.com

Here in the UK we stock a full range of Slide on, Clip on, Mini, Face Frame and Integrated Soft Close hinges. Tutti integrated soft close hinges are assembled with a steel damper to provide a seamless controlled closing action to any cupboard door, without large intrusive devices fitted to the hinge. Integrated soft close are offered in 105° and 165° opening, 30° and 45° angled, Blind Corner and Frame hinges, as well as hinges for glass doors and doors up to 30mm thick. This allows furniture manufacturers to standardise on the one range. We also offer one-way or two-way opening hinges. one-way hinges hold the door open to 105° whilst two-way hinges have free movement. The cup drilling depth for one-way is 11.3mm, whereas the two-way is 12mm which includes the 40mm cup thick door hinge. Integrated soft close reduces labour time by not having to retro fit soft close devices, and also eliminates the risk of such devices being accidently knocked off. A combination of soft close and non-soft close hinges can be fitted to a door using the same mounting plate to save cost. As well as holding large stocks in East Yorkshire, we are able to manage the supply chain directly from the manufacturer.

AXYZ adds small-format option to range of waterjet cutting machines A new smaller-format waterjet cutting machine has been introduced by AXYZ Automation Group. Called the WARDJet A-0612, it forms part of the A-Series of machines and shares all of the same design and performance characteristics of the larger X-Series but at a lower cost. The A-0612 will process a wide range of materials that are unsuited to traditional CNC machines, including for example stainless steel, various alloys and glass that are frequently used in specialist woodworking, furniture production and panel processing applications. With a comparatively small 213 x 124cm footprint, the A-0612 will fit perfectly into any workplace where space is at a premium yet offers the same cutting power and output capabilities of much larger waterjet machines. A key benefit of the A-0612 is that whilst similarly configured smallformat waterjet machines operate at pressures ranging from 30,000 to 45,000psi – the A-0612 will operate at 60,000psi. This enables the same production capabilities and cutting timeframe of a full-size machine. The ability to operate at this much higher pressure also radically reduces the amount of abrasive required for the cutting process, thus further enhancing the machine’s cost effectiveness. As with the larger-format WARDJet machines, the A-0612 is based on a lightweight and rigidly constructed modular solid steel frame gantry that will reliably support the most robust machine operation required for highdensity and heavier materials. It also incorporates multiple cutting tool heads, an industrial-grade rack and pinion drive system for optimum cutting accuracy and the elimination of problems frequently encountered with belt-driven systems and an optional water level control system and cutting table enclosure. These latter features help reduce splashback and thus preserve water, as well

as lowering noise levels in the workplace to further enhance the A-0612’s environmental credentials. In common with all WARDJet machines, the A-0612 is supported by proprietary Move motion control software. 01952 291600 www.axyz.co.uk

packaging solution for businesses that want to boost their green credentials. Providing the same performance as standard polythene mailing bags, these environmentallyfriendly mailing bags provide businesses with an eco-friendly alternative that does not compromise on quality, performance, appearance or feel. The employee-owned business’s new mailing bags are also carbon neutral, meaning they take carbon dioxide from the atmosphere in the growing process, therefore balancing out the carbon dioxide emitted during production and

transit. The next product Kite has launched this month is new book wrap mailers, all-round edge corner protection which is comprised of 100% recycled material. Secure and tamper-evident, these corrugated book wrap mailers are the ideal solution for e-commerce businesses operating in the printed media industry, independent publishers and more. They provide a heavy duty, environmentally-friendly postal solution that gets goods from A to B. Each of the new products will help Kite reach its 2019 goal. The e-commerce business’s team has pledged to reduce its own plastic usage and its customers’ plastic usage by a total 120 ton. If you want to find out more about Kite Packaging’s new environmental products or about their 120 tonne plastic challenge, visit kitepackaging.co.uk.

Milestone for family laminating firm Established in June 1989, Duncan Reeds started as a small independent family-run business. 30 years later, father and son duo, Tony and Garry Atkins, has taken Duncan Reeds from strength to strength growing into the dynamic operation we see today, making the company a tour de force within the industry. “When we first started, it was during the recession so times were difficult,” explains Tony Atkins, managing director. “We opened with a 2000ft2 unit, and now despite many economically tough periods, we have two full production facilities in West Sussex and Manchester, a total of over 70,000ft2 – and we’re continuing to grow and looking to extend our facilities in West Sussex. Here’s to the next chapter!” Celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, the key to Duncan Reeds’ success lies in the fact that it has never been shy of investing in what

Managing director Garry Atkins

matters most to the business – the team and the equipment. One of the largest employers in the area, Duncan Reeds recruits and retains only the best workforce. The company has also just invested in a state-of-the-art extraction system to better look after the team and the environment. “our people make us who we are,” says Garry Atkins, managing director, “our entire team are dedicated, expert, qualified professionals, guaranteeing the very best craftsmanship in our manufacturing processes and expert knowledge and efficiency in our sales and administration practices. We’re also constantly investing in the most up-to-date, leading-edge machinery and IT technologies to fully service the diverse needs of

our clients.” The company’s mantra: ‘whatever it is you do, whatever it is you want, we can make it, is testimony to its can-do approach across every aspect of the business ensuring that its clients’ expectations are always met. Duncan Reeds never compromises on its tight code of conduct and continues to operate with the same strong set of family values, integrity and ethics that formed the initial foundations of the company 30 years ago. It’s no wonder Duncan Reeds has built a reputation, throughout the UK and overseas, as a leading and go-to fabricator of bespoke laminated products and services. www.duncanreeds.com

Delightful bedrooms – keeping calm Renolit has recently introduced two woodgrain designs in four colours which are perfectly suited to bedroom furniture. Bedrooms have to be many things: a welcome retreat which is elegant and charming; a comfortable relaxing oasis away from busy lives; yet at the same time, practical with plenty of storage to ease keeping organised and tidy. Wardrobes and bedroom furniture, by their sheer size, dominate, which means that their style and colour has an significant impact on the room’s interior design style. While greys remain popular, early 2019 trends indicate a palette including nudes and warmer tones combined with strong statement colours such as dark blue or warm coral. By opting for furniture featuring one of Renolit’s versatile woodgrain décors teamed with an abundance of textiles and complementary

wallcoverings bedrooms can be transformed into cosmopolitan boutique havens. Nordic Wood is a recent addition to the range that brings contemporary stylishness to traditional woodgrain décor. The subtle design consists of a natural grain, soft lines and neutral tones available in two colourways: White Nordic Wood, matched to Kronospan’s K088, is ideal for creating light Scandi-style spaces in combination with matt whites, denim blue and northern light-inspired turquoise. Alternatively, the soft natural white-grey tones of Grey Nordic Wood are ideal to create a tasteful ambience. The design can be paired with smoky greys and white-grey, and complemented by adding a warm flash of colour such as coral as illustrated here. Grey Nordic Wood is matched by Kronospan’s MFC K089. Coastland Oak brings more traditional

detail to the woodgrain, and portrays an irresistible classic oak. Revealing a highly sophisticated design of split knots, natural imperfections and delicate cross-hatching, this design will add fashionable elegance to any room. White Coastland Oak is perfect to create an elaborate and luxurious atmosphere. It can be paired with smoky greys, purples and contrasted with white-greys and matches Kronspan’s K080. As an alternative Satin Coastland Oak which matches Kronospan K081 provides a deeper taupe colour inter-dispersed with expressive grey tones. Movac and Sayerlack – a program of environmental sustainability

As part of its GAIA integrated program of environmental sustainability, Sayerlack and Movac continue to launch new high technology coatings providing not only reduced impact on the environment but clear benefits to the end user. Part of this initiative is the Sayerlack Earth range of coatings. These innovative, readyto-use, high dry residue products have a low volatile organic compound content as they do not need to be diluted. June 2019 sees Movac launch three of these impressive Sayerlack A + B coatings (there is no need for any thinner to be used) to the UK marketplace, giving the company’s customers significant solvent reduction over conventional systems. TU0276/13 is a white high solid polyurethane

FP308_Pages.indd 46

primer which exhibits good hiding power even on sharp edges, good vertical hold and excellent sandability, making it the easy to use optimum base for any Sayerlack topcoat paint system. The other two new A + B coatings form part of the new GAIA high performance clear system they are: TU0137/00 is a clear polyurethane thixotropic basecoat with excellent vertical hold and pore wetting which is easy to sand and gives exceptional build. If pre-colouring of the timber is required it may be used over any of the Sayerlack ranges of stains including the water based stain systems to further reduce solvent emissions. TZ64**/00 is a family of clear polyurethane lacquers with gloss levels from 5-80% with high filling power and even matting designed to

overcoat the TU0137/00 basecoat. Both products use the same hardener TH0779/00 mixed at a 2:1 ratio and are then ready to apply without thinning to obtain an exceptional finish. Applied at a film weight 20-30% lower than conventional products this not only gives the benefit of further reductions in solvent emissions but means less product needs to be purchased saving Movac customers in material costs. These are just a selection of the exciting products from the new range of Sayerlack coatings, for more information on these or a host of new technology products contact Movac Group Ltd. 0844 561 0070 www.movac.com

Who is the Kenyon Group, frequently referred to as Kenyon’s? Kenyon sales manager, Darren Ogden, steps up to answer the question – who is Kenyon’s? “The name Kenyon is synonymous with adhesives since 1979 yet we glide under the radar of the multi-national competitors by delivering an impeccable service to the end user. We are a family company, with strong family values celebrating 40 years in the adhesive world. From our base in Oldham, Lancashire we supply the UK woodworking, furniture, caravan, insulation, mattress, window, and door manufacturers with a range of high quality adhesives. “What makes us stand out from the crowd? That’s simple: UK stock holding across three warehouses – no lead times – we deliver the goods when you need the goods – we put in the time and effort to ensure we help the customer achieve the best solution! “I’m amazed at how many companies believe they are getting a good service from their incumbent adhesive supplier, yet the supplier dictates delivery; seven days, 14 days and even 35 days! This makes the customer’s planning and inventory control difficult, to say the least. “There’s nothing worse than a failed delivery – it stops production and costs money. With Kenyon’s our customers tell us when they want delivery and we will deliver!

FP308_Pages.indd 48

Kenyon sales manager Darren Ogden

“Delivery is important, very important, but you have to back it up with a quality adhesive product, offer technical support/advice and solve adhesive problems. There’s little point in receiving the delivery on time if the adhesive doesn’t do what you require it to do! “We tick all the boxes and don’t forget we are very competitive on price. However, in the current economical market we are seeing more and more that the delivered price doesn’t appear to be the dominant deal breaker. The importance has switched to the ability to deliver the right product at the right time. Ontime delivery normally now outweighs a few pence a kilo saving. It’s a proven fact, just ask any customer whose production line has been halted.”

Darren goes on to add: “We like a challenge, we like to solve adhesive problems and we have solved many sticky problems. If you have an adhesive problem – challenge us! Even if the adhesive solution is not within our remit, we will guide you in the right direction. “Customer service is a priority; when we solve a problem, even if we have to refer the customer to another supplier, a solution has been offered and the majority of the time customers remember the time and effort we put in to find the answer. Let the customer down and they will not forget!” 0161 627 1001 salesteam@kenyon-group.co.uk www.kenyon-group.co.uk

Adjusting the lacquering process as temperatures rise

As summer approaches, solvent entrapment and premature drying is a common issue many sprayers face, negatively affecting the overall finish of wood surfaces. Ideally, lacquers should be applied at temperatures between 16-20°C for the best results; however, with temperatures rarely dropping below the mid-20’s throughout June and July, sprayers need to be mindful of how the hotter climate affects a lacquer’s viscosity and drying time. Solvent entrapment is a common issue sprayers face during warmer months. When the climate is hotter, a lacquer’s drying time can be accelerated greatly; which means that the lacquer surface can dry too quickly, before the solvent has had time to evaporate from the film and before the hardening process commences.

This can lead to a host of issues for sprayers, with the most common being bubbling and cracking on the top surface as the solvent tries to escape through the already-skinned surface, resulting in a poor finish. The other common issue is that the lacquer spray dries in the air and lands on the surface producing a rough sandy effect. Using a thinner is therefore highly recommended to help achieve the lacquer’s correct viscosity and minimise the risk of solvent entrapment and premature drying. Hesse’s PU Thinner DV 4935 is a superior thinner, which helps slow down the drying process accelerated by hotter weather and

FP308_Pages.indd 52

increases the flow and levelling of lacquer; producing a smooth and streak-free finish. What’s more, the PU Thinner DV 4935 is suitable for all lacquers and is free from aromatic compounds and other toxins often found in other thinners. In addition, Hesse has also developed its PU Retarder DV 4909 – a thinner suitable for even hotter temperatures, which the company recommends using when temperatures exceed 30°C. To find out more about Hesse Lignal’s PU Thinner DV 4935 or PU Retarder DV 4909, contact Redwood Innovations. 02392 233310 sales@redwoodinnovations.co.uk www.redwoodinnovations.co.uk

Always on the cutting edge

Taka Srl, the Italian specialist in the production of hot-melt polyurethane reactive (HMPUR) adhesives, has over the years developed a range of products for various applications, suitable for humid and hot environments such as kitchens, bathrooms and all areas where a high resistance to heat, humidity and steam is required. Its sister company WPR, produces profile and panel wrapping machines; together, they offer all-round service. In the production of furniture made of wood, MDF, chipboard or honeycomb, an important process that completes the finishing is the edgebanding of the ennobled panels. The choice of the adhesive is based on the type of finishing (type and colour of the edge) and the shapes (straight, curved and softforming panels), but above all, on the resistance required by the finished product. Taka offers the following edgebanding glues: 3308.5 Transparent adhesive for the edgebanding of all types of panels – straight to soft-formed – where edges of various colours are used. Since the product is completely invisible, it allows to have a thin glue line and in the presence of edges of different colours, the adhesive will reflect the colour of the edge, making the glue line disappear. 3308.10 Adhesive of neutral colour, suitable for straight edgebanding with long open time and excellent grip. Great resistance to heat, humidity and steam tests – ideal for kitchen doors.

FP308_Pages.indd 54

3308.20 Taka has introduced this new neutral colour product into the market. It features an excellent open time and high initial grip, particularly in the presence of edges with high thicknesses 1-2 mm. It also has an excellent stability inside the machine, especially during the weekend stop. With the aim of being an active partner for its customers, WPR/Taka has opened the WPR/ Taka Academy to transfer the fundamental knowledge of the application process and the

respective parameters in order to always obtain the best possible quality. The academy has an application laboratory with an edgebanding machine for tests and training purposes. The company also offers training courses for staff that can be held at the customer’s site. Productivity enhancing entry-level software solutions from Homag Due to its continuous product development and innovation, Homag has established itself as the world leader in woodworking machinery. Homag’s large range of machining solutions caters for companies of all sizes, ensuring it has a solution for each individual workshop. Whilst historically the latest technological developments would be seen as out of reach for the smallest of manufacturers, Homag has invested heavily in its entry-level technology. Along with the production technology, Homag has developed a range of entry-level software which enhances and simplifies manufacturing. woodWOP software – easy and efficient CNC programming One of Homag’s most popular and well-known software systems is woodWOP. Designed for CNC machine programming, the simplicity of the software makes the machine set-up and manufacturing processes quick and easy. Based around the operator’s experience, Homag has ensured that the user-friendly system is uniform throughout the Homag CNC range. Developed by in-house software experts, woodWOP software is capable of driving three-, four- and five-axis CNC machines. This is extremely beneficial for smaller companies where operators need to be trained and able to operate several different machines. The software consistency between the different models makes production easy and efficient.

To make production set-up even faster, users can now program their own processing operations and save them within the woodWOP system. These can then be easily accessed and implemented for a speedy start. In order to get your woodWOP journey started, however, there are several component templates available to download for free via the internet. Homag’s software forum for woodWOP users Typically, CNC customers will visit Homag UK’s headquarters at Castle Donington to learn how to operate new machinery and woodWOP software. However after this initial training, Homag is also committed to providing ongoing support. The company has created a software forum which allows all woodWOP users to connect and discuss CNC production. Users from all areas of the furniture and woodworking industry can join and follow posts discussing the software. The forum is a great way for real life users to share their woodWOP tips and experiences. It is proving successful at not only answering manufacturers’ specific queries, but also inspiring new programming methods and uses. With an updated design that is mobile optimised, it is now extremely quick and easy to access the forum. Additionally, users can subscribe to forum topics so they need never worry about missing a thread reply.

From design to production with woodCAD|CAM software Homag’s woodCAD|CAM is a versatile software solution which takes entry-level users through the design process from initial concept to end product. Benefiting both the design and manufacturing departments, woodCAD|CAM simplifies the process of designing bespoke furniture components. This ingenious piece of software reduces the time it takes users to create realistic 3D drawings. These drawings can then be given to customers and architects to preview how the finished article will suit the required space. In addition to 3D drawings, the software also programs and compiles needed material lists to free the operator’s time for other important tasks. Additionally, woodCAD|CAM software can further save users time as it is able to calculate a bill of material costs and create quotations for the production of products. For increased efficiencies, users are able to choose additional modules to add to the woodCAD|CAM system. The modules allow design programs to be automatically created by the system. The operator simply enters the required parameters into the software and it instantly instructs the shop floor machinery for quick processing. Whether a bespoke furniture or a mass volume manufacturer, the woodCAD|CAM system will

57 simplify processes to reduce both production time and costs. MagiCut – production optimising software Homag’s MagiCut software is an essential time- and money-saving tool for entry-level manufacturers. The system guides the user to achieve the best yield from boards. The software is able to calculate the most efficient layout for nesting shapes from each board, whilst maintaining quality and production throughput. This feature allows the operator to take individual components and convert full board nests from the production office to the shop floor in seconds. For further efficiency, each component can be uniquely identified throughout the production process as all parts are labelled with part numbers. This makes it easier, eliminating errors within production when assembling components, as each part is clearly marked. Designed not only for CNC machinery, MagiCut can also be used to improve material utilisation and efficiency on beam saws within the workshop. As MagiCut is a modular software, it is easy for users to upgrade their version (adding required modules) at their own pace. This is ideal for smaller manufacturers who can simply build the system as their production needs dictate. Simon Brooks, managing director at Homag UK concludes: “Whilst we produce world-leading machining technology, it is our outstanding

Homag’s woodCAD|CAM software simplifies the design process with realistic 3D drawings

software which really maximises the results produced by the machines. “When designing and developing software, it is always at the forefront of our minds that it must be easy to use, enhance productivity and be accessible to all manufacturers. “Our latest software packages allow even the

NBF adds social and ethical compliance to its membership requirements The National Bed Federation (NBF) is to extend its Code of Practice to cover social and ethical compliance. In an historic vote at last week’s Forum and Annual General Meeting – the association’s 107th – the membership voted unanimously to join the Fast Forward1 programme, which will involve all members being audited against a rigorous set of statutory compliance criteria. These include all aspects of employment, including eligibility to work, national minimum wage, employment law, health and safety, mistreatment and access to remedy. It also covers business structure and tax. NBF presiden, Tony Lisanti, says: “We are all aware of the stories and rumours widely circulating about rogue businesses which do not behave in socially or ethical acceptable ways and who may even be breaking the law. Members and their customers – retailers – have been telling us that they would like to see our Code of Practice move beyond product compliance and we wanted to find a way of helping our membership clearly distance themselves from such rogue businesses.” The NBF has selected to work with the Fast Forward programme as opposed to other, similar schemes, because of its emphasis on

FP308_Pages.indd 58

training and practical guidance coupled with forensic auditing processes, consistency of approach and ability to share audit results with other scheme members – ie retailers. The NBF will now embark on an 18-month programme, introducing the scheme, conducting training and then audits, with a view to all members being audited by the end of 2020. The cost of the first round of audits will be covered by the NBF. In addition, the NBF’s members also voted for the NBF to sign up to a new initiative coordinated by the Gangmasters & Labour Abuse Authority (GLAA) – the Apparel and General Merchandise Public/Private Protocol – launched in November 2018, which aims to bring together manufacturers, suppliers, retailers and a wide

range of enforcement authorities, including The Health & Safety Executive and HMRC, in a proper exchange of information and intelligence to support targeted enforcement activity and investigations. Fast Forward audits to date have uncovered serious issues, particularly in the apparel sector, ranging from wholesale disregard for employment laws to practices that border on forced labour, such as cash payments below National Minimum Wage, no contracts or paid holidays, benefit fraud collusion and illegal workers. A support industry that exists to limit risk and hide criminal behaviour such as fraudulent lawyers and accountants, false paperwork and money laundering has also been uncovered. “We hope that joining the protocol will give us a channel for reporting any similar concerns we hear about in our sector and thus help to protect vulnerable and exploited workers, to disrupt exploitative practices and bring criminals to justice – but also to protect honest businesses who do the right thing and are being disadvantaged in the marketplace as a consequence of such unfair competition,” concludes Tony. www.bedfed.org.uk

Does your workplace meet current HSE standards?

Damian Smith on-site at Beechwood Frames, Long Eaton

Accident rates within the woodworking industry are among the highest in the manufacturing industries. When it comes to teams working with woodworking machines or tools, the safety and wellbeing of those staff is the employer’s responsibility. This means it is imperative that training is up to date, and that the machines being used have the latest safety equipment fitted and the appropriate tooling in place, while ensuring the working environment has been assessed for safety. Although a business has legal responsibilities for the safety of its workforce, it also makes good business sense to promote safer working practices, resulting in less downtime and more efficient practice. The question, therefore, is does your workplace meet current HSE standards? Damian Smith, the MD of Safety Training Woodworking, can provide answers. Busy start to the year Damian says that since the beginning of 2019, his company has been busier than ever. In fact, in order to meet growing demand for the company’s insight, training and expertise, Safety Training Woodworking has added a new member to the team, Neil Clarkstone. Neil has a long history in the industry and will deliver

training and help to ensure that parts orders will continue to be promptly dispatched. Safety Training Woodworking provides training that meets a range of requirements, including: • Familiarisation/refresher training for existing operators

• Certified operator competence • Face-fit testing The company coverd all operator needs and machine types for woodworking machinery, as well as courses for abrasive wheels and portable power tools, along with face-fit testing where respiratory protective equipment (RPE) is used as a control measure under Health and Safety Legislation. Furniture maker and design icon Sir Terence Conran presented with Lifetime Achievement Award Sir Terence Conran, one of the world’s bestknown designers, retailers and restaurateurs, has been given a Lifetime Achievement Award by The Furniture Makers’ Company, the City of London livery company and charity for the furnishing industry, in recognition for his outstanding contribution to the design and furnishing sector. Sir Terence was presented with the award by the Lord Mayor of London Alderman Peter Estlin at the Mansion House in the City of London during the Installation Dinner of the company’s newly-installed Master, Dids Macdonald OBE, in May. Born in 1931, Sir Terence founded the Conran Design Studio in 1956 and in 1964 opened the first of the Habitat chain of home furnishing stores that revolutionised design on the British high street in the 60s and 70s. Later he established The Conran Shop and opened stores in London, Paris, New York and across Japan. In the nineties he founded the Conran Restaurants group that opened iconic restaurants, hotels and bars in London, Paris, New York, Japan and Scandinavia including Quaglino’s, Bluebird, Mezzo, Guastavino’s and Le Pont de la Tour. Throughout his career Sir Terence’s companies have designed, owned and operated shops, restaurants, hotels, bars and cafés around the world as well as working across the fields of

FP308_Pages.indd 62

architecture, interiors, products and graphics. In 1989 he founded the Design Museum in London, the world’s first museum dedicated to design, which moved to larger premises in the former Commonwealth Building, Kensington, in 2016. Today Sir Terence designs furniture for Benchmark, Content by Terence Conran and The Conran Shop, and remains involved in the restaurant industry through The Boundary and Bibendum. He has written over 50 informative books that broadly reflect his design philosophy and is an honorary professor of the University of the Creative Arts. Now in its 10th year, the Lifetime Achievement Award is the highest honour the company can bestow on an individual in the furnishing sector. Dids Macdonald OBE, Master of The Furniture Makers’ Company, says: “You have been a pioneer and game changer in British design, which encompasses innovation, technology, creativity and craftsmanship, and been an inspiring influence in our lives in more ways that we can imagine – thank you!” Commenting on the award, Sir Terence said: “In my heart I have always considered myself a furniture maker, it has given me more pleasure than anything else during my rather long career. As a very young boy I vividly remember the absolute joy of finally finishing making

my very own bookcase and it has been in my bloodstream ever since. So it was truly thrilling to be recognised by The Furniture Makers’ Company and to enjoy a very special evening with fellow craftspeople who share my love of making furniture. One of my big fears is that as a nation we often appear to have lost the joy of making things. “So it was uplifting to be surrounded by passionate furniture makers and see that the talent and passion in our industry burns as brightly as ever.” www.furnituremakers.org.uk
