Comment With only a few days to go until Interzum and then Ligna in Germany, I find myself pondering the innovation and progress that will hopefully be on show at the twin pillars of the furniture and joinery industry supply chain. Typically it’s a combination of evolutionary progress peppered with unexpected innovations that can make visitors stop in their tracks. Chief among the evolution at Ligna is expected to be the increasing manifestation of robots, automation and Industry 4.0 concepts. We are undoubtedly entering a new dawn in manufacturing whereby the data produced throughout the manufacturing process can practically help companies create better efficiencies in their work and open new opportunities. A supplement John Legg looking at they progressive sector will follow next month. Editorial director Regarding business sentiment, the CBI reports than manufacturing activity grew modestly in the quarter to April, while stocks rose at a record pace (stock-piling?) according to the latest Industrial Trends Survey. The survey of showed that while output growth sped up slightly in the three months to April, it remained relatively modest overall. Manufacturers expect output volumes to be broadly flat in the next three months. Investment intentions for the year ahead showed firms still expect to spend less on plant and machinery, but the survey balances were less negative than in January showing that opportunities are slowly improving. Manufacturers also said they expect to spend roughly the same amount on product and process innovation as well as training and retraining in the year ahead, following three quarters of negative investment intentions. Interestingly, the survey saw a record high proportion of manufacturers (since October 1979) cite replacement as a reason for expected capital expenditure in the year ahead. However, the proportion of firms reporting labour shortages as a likely limitation to capital expenditure in the year ahead also rose to a new record high. Regarding training, in April the Furniture and Interiors Education, Skills and Training Alliance (FIESTA) held a conference next to launch Furniture and Interiors Skills Plus 6 News (Skills Plus) – a service to help close the industry’s skills 16 New products gap. The underlying feeling from the event was that the 20 Interzum-Ligna industry needs to face up to the skills gap now – if we don’t do something now, in 10 years we could be seeing some 34 Decorative panels serious repercussions. Also apprentices aren’t something 44 Edgebanding to be feared and Skills Plus, the new service, will help industry to implement apprenticeships. 50 Fittings & components Barry Moss, London and south east regional 60 Solid wood processing apprenticeship manager at Travis Perkins offered a positive statistic that they have seen an ROI of £38,000 on each of 66 Installation its apprentices – proof if it was needed that this type of 82 Classified investment is tremendously worthwhile for all parties. A fuller report will follow next month.

Smallbone & Mark Wilkinson make three milestone career awards Smallbone and Mark Wilkinson (SMWF) presented milestone career awards to three craftsmen that have together notched up ninety years’ service at the Devizes workshop. Andrew Potter and Kevin Paget celebrated 25 years and Steve Webb was recognised for forty years’ service. Andrew started his career with Mark Wilkinson, drawer making at his Bromham workshop. He then progressed into the workshop at Devizes and developed expertise in the furniture production process from raw materials to the finished carcass. Kevin also started his career at Mark Wilkinson’s workshop in Bromham, joining from school. He is a third generation craftsman, his grandfather Geoff and father Dave all worked at Bromham at the same time. Steve also boasts three

generations in the Smallbone family, with Steve’s own son having been a fitter and his father even graces the cover of the first ever Smallbone brochure! SMWF executive chairman Ian Gray said: “These exceptional members of staff have played a significant part in maintaining our performance standards, quality and commitment to excellence over the years. “Their hard work and loyalty

has contributed to the unique craftsmanship heritage that is so important to both brands.” All three received a certificate to commemorate their achievements. Andrew and Kevin both received a watch and a cash sum. Steve was presented with two crystal glasses engraved with the company logos, a decanter and a beautiful handcrafted personalised stand, as well as a voucher for a weekend away.

How do you become a cover star? By making the most of everything that makes Corian® so special. Earlier this year exclusive Corian distributor CD (UK) launched a photographic competition to find the most show-stopping projects to feature on the company’s 2019 price list. The company asked fabricators to submit images of their most impressive work for consideration – with opportunities to star on either the front or the back cover. “We were delighted with the number and quality of entries,” says head of marketing, Leisa Marr, “it was fantastic to see so many of our customers get behind this initiative and take such pride in the work they do with Corian. As excited as we were by the response, this also made the judging process really tough, but we put our heads together, did a lot of debating and at last came up with the two winning projects.” The winning projects are: an elegant kitchen/ living design by Arthouse Creative Interiors with Corian fabricated by Bluestone Worktops; and a stunning floating staircase installation designed by Adams + Collingwood Architects with Corian fabricated by Timberfusion and installed by Fivestars. “What these two projects demonstrate,” adds MD Gary Baker, “is not only the beauty and elegance of Corian but also its extraordinary versatility. They show that Corian is both easy to work with in terms of achieving a bold creative vision, and also a pleasure to live with. These installations are not only strikingly modern, they have a timeless quality and will keep performing for the long term.” The kitchen design will take its place on the front cover of the price list, expressing a dynamic use of the material and its seamless joining capabilities. Meanwhile its smooth, tactile, easy-care finish, and streamlined aesthetics emphasise how much added value Corian can bring to a renovation project – and to the lifestyle of its end users.

Back cover winner: the architect was Adams + Collingwood Architects, it was fabricated by Timberfusion and installed by Fivestars

FP307_Pages.indd 8

Front cover winner: fabricated by Bluestone Worktops designed by Arthouse Creative Interiors

On the back cover, the dramatic cantilevered staircase project with its extruded pyramids of Corian embodies the material’s key strengths in a variety of ways, as it succeeds here both decoratively and structurally. Corian is robust, resistant, easy to maintain – and even to repair if necessary. “Corian has been optimised and explored by the fabricator, design and architectural community for many years now,” Gary continues, “yet we are always encouraged by all the many ways in which it continues to reveal its considerable merit.” Jo Taylor of Arthouse, who designed the winning kitchen adds, “We were delighted to win the cover star competition, it’s a really great idea to run something like this as it got us excited about our project again, and the client too. Corian is a fantastic, high-quality product to work with and in this project, it blends so beautifully with the Siematic furniture and it was the ideal material for the fold-down cantilevered table feature, with the sleek seamless finish that it offers.” Tom Grandison of Bluestone Worktops adds, “We encourage design and creativity when delivering bespoke worktop solutions and we love working with Corian because of its infinite possibilities and outstanding aethestics. We’re proud to be a member of the Corian Quality Network and to work alongside CDUK in installing impressive Corian projects across the

UK. Our whole team is delighted to have won the Cover Competition and would like to applaud all at Arthouse for their fantastic work in raising the bar for interior design.” Ross Allen of Timberfusion, which created the dramatic staircase, says: “We are really pleased to have won, it’s great to see our work make the cover and great to know that so many people have been impressed by it! We chose to work with Corian because this is a completely new build contemporary home with finishes such as wood and stone, but we were particularly impressed by the seamlessness of Corian, and how easy it is to make compact shapes that look like stone, but in a modern material that also offered the weight saving values. This was particularly useful in this application, as was the fact that, unlike stone, if somehow there was to be any damage, it could be simply repaired on-site.” The 2019 price list went live in April and is one of the first initiatives in a very significant year for CDUK, which celebrates 40 years since it introduced Corian to this country. 2019 promises to live up to its big year billing for the company in many ways, with the new colour launch, plus further enhanced services from next day delivery to increased training options, and the introduction of several new solutions and accessories. WOULD YOU BUY A CHEAP PARACHUTE? DON’T MAKE NOTICE BOARDS AN AFTERTHOUGHT. SAFETY MUST COME FIRST. Tests performed at fire research establishments have shown that notice boards will significantly accelerate the spread of fire if they are incorrectly fire rated. A recent survey of schools shows that 65% consider cost more important than the fire rating of their notice boards. Most cheap noticeboards are made from wood fibre, commonly included in firelighters.

DESIGNED TO MEET REGULATIONS Sundeala FR Board is the only UK manufactured pinboard to meet building regs for use in circulation areas and protected fire escape routes. Sundeala is made from 100% recycled cellulose fibres and contains no VOC solvents or chemical binding agents.

Dow’s expertise and insight manifests itself in Comfort Science Dow is driving innovations that extract value from material, polymer, chemical and biological science to help address many of the world’s most challenging problems such as the need for clean water, clean energy generation and conservation, and increasing agricultural productivity. Its recently-presented Comfort Science philosophy is the application of science to create materials which deliver the most comfortable experience possible. Consumers are always looking for a more comfortable experience – because comfort is fundamental to achieving a good quality of life and a sense of wellbeing. Dow says it remains committed to helping people achieve their ideal levels of comfort by combining its knowledge of material science with an understanding of how human beings think, feel, sense and behave. This is what the company calls Comfort Science. By drawing on its scientific expertise and technical knowhow, Dow produces a range of high-quality materials that meets different needs.

FP307_Pages.indd 10

Dow has identified three dimensions of comfort to help do this: ergonomics, micro-climate and sensation. By configuring these qualities differently, Dow says it can respond to different needs and tailor solutions to deliver the most comfortable experience possible: • Ergonomics Optimising the relationship between the weight, shape and size of the body and the material to create a supportive, highperforming system. • Micro-climate Maintaining comfortable levels of temperature and humidity in the microclimate that exists between materials and the human body. • Sensation Understanding a material’s textural qualities and its response to light touch, in order to deliver a tangible sensation of wellbeing. The company’s impressive facilities in Horgen, Switzerland, comprise of R&D, manufacturing and office space. Among the offices sits Dow’s Sleep Studios. Dow created Sleep Studios to support bedding manufacturers and brands in developing more personalised experiences to help

consumers get a good night’s sleep. Sleep Studios were designed by Dow to study the way people sleep, what materials make a difference, and how to achieve the ideal levels of comfort for a better sleeping experience. At Dow’s Sleep Studios scientists, manufacturers and brands can work together to advance the future of pillow and mattress design through latest sleep technology, data analysis and personalised solutions. Sleep Studios are inspiring spaces where bedding manufacturers and brand owners can touch, feel, explore, design and create solutions that will maximise sleep comfort. Comfort Science is how Dow develops and applies scientific knowledge to create materials which deliver the most comfortable experience possible. By configuring three dimensions of comfort differently, Dow can create tailored solutions to deliver the most comfortable experience possible and meet specific bedding needs. www.comfortscience.com

Sundeala makes fire safety regulations easy for specifiers Recent studies have shown a lack of awareness in schools has led to the use of cheap and dangerous notice boards. Fire safety regulations are a vital consideration when specifying products and nowhere more so than in schools. Statistics show that in England there were more than 3000 primary fires in the healthcare and education sectors in 2016 alone. 682 of these were on educational premises. Classed as internal wall linings, notice boards typically cover large surface areas in classrooms, corridors, circulation spaces and more. Thus, it should stand to reason that safety regulations are diligently applied – after all, why

would you clad walls in a combustible material? Recently, a survey of 43 schools highlighted a lack of knowledge. It showed that 74% of the schools were unaware of the material inside their notice boards and 86% did not know what the UK building standards are for wall linings. Perhaps most worryingly, 65% considered cost more important than the fire rating of their notice boards. Given this, it is unsurprising that the safety of notice boards may often be compromised by cost-cutting measures by contractors and cost-consultants.

The issue was debated in Parliament last year, with MP David Drew highlighting the alarming fact that many cheap notice boards are in fact made from wood fibre. David Drew said “Something that we would want to be safe and secure is also available to people to set fire to, in a completely normal way, as a (commercially available) firelighter.” A worrying thought, certainly, but what can architects and specifiers do? One company has the answer. Gloucestershirebased company Sundeala produces the only UK manufactured pin board to not only meet but out-perform public building regulations. By specifying Sundeala FR board in their master specs, architects and specifiers can ensure the message is conveyed down the chain. To make this easier, Sundeala provides downloadable BIM objects and 2D and 3D CAD drawings. Sundeala’s 100% recycled and recyclable FR boards boast a 25 year warranty and a Class B fire-rating, exceeding regulations for classrooms, circulations spaces and fire escape routes. A sustainable and environmentallyfriendly product, the board contains no VOCs or chemical binding agents. Available in seven vibrant colourways, Sundeala can be purchased through premium distributor, Lawcris, with some products in stock for next day delivery. www.lawcris.co.uk

AMS to celebrate its second Spring Fest event this month AMS is holding its second Spring Fest edition from the 15-16th of May in Skeffington, Leicestershire, where visitors will find the new Wadkin Bursgreen multi rip saw range, more than 35 machines on display, experts showing how the machines work, a Stark tooling exhibition and special discount vouchers for the assistants. Advanced Machinery Services (AMS) is frequently adding new machinery to its range and improving its services, showroom and support for its customers. AMS director Steve McGloin says: “We like to organise this type of exhibition at our place because our customers and friends can try our Wadkin Bursgreen machines and check for themselves the safety, quality and how easy to operate they are.”

New heavy-duty multi rip saw The most recent addition to the company’s impressive Wadkin Bursgreen range is a new heavy-duty multi rip saw – ready to demonstrate to interested visitors. Steve McGloin says: “We are delighted to show all our visitors our new WB 120 multi rip saw because it was a suggestion from our customers. We like to listen to our customers and ask them what they need in their workshops to have success, and then we try to get it for them.” There will be a large range of planer moulders, high speed crosscuts, panel saws, many Wadkin classical machines and much more on show. All the machines on display will be available to purchase so it is an advantage for visitors that

they will be able to get them in their workshop only days later – and not have to wait for ages, which sometimes happens in this industry. Steve says: “We like to organise at least two exhibitions in our showroom in Leicestershire every year, because we like to invite our customers to our home to thank them once more for trusting us and to show them all the new machines and services that we are adding to our range. It’s always nice to see them and have a chat, face-to-face, not always through email or phone – we like to take care of customers and offer them the best engineers, services and support.” To arrange a viewing of something specific, email anavarro@advancedmachinery.co.uk. www.advancedmachinery.co.uk

2700 Miles behind the wheel ‘for the kids’ by Mighton boss Mike Traditional window hardware, paint and machinery specialist Mighton Products’ founder and chairman Mike Derham is about to set off behind the steering wheel of a support vehicle once again, to provide backup for a group of cyclists who this time are riding back all the way from Russia to Shropshire. Mike has been a long time supporter of the Hope House charity – www.hopehouse.org.uk – which provides care and support to life-limited children, young people and their families from Shropshire, Cheshire, North and Mid Wales, which Mike became involved with through a friend who raises money for the organisation. For Mike this will be the fourth such event he has supported, both physically and as a sponsor, and includes ensuring the safe passage for a group of 18 cyclists who will be riding a total of 2730 miles, through 10 European countries in just 12 days. Divided into teams of three the cyclists will ride in relay from the Russian border, through Finland into the Arctic Circle, then Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Holland, Belgium, France, then via the tunnel into England, dipping into Wales and on to the final destination of Hope House in Oswestry, Shropshire. “These events have helped to raise more than £1m for Hope House and I am delighted to be involved with this latest effort, which will actually

FP307_Pages.indd 14

be the last for on such a grand scale, due to the sheer complexity and effort involved,” said Mike. “It is therefore important that we raise even more money! The previous rides, which have included three across the USA and others through Europe, have been gruelling for riders and support alike, but the cause makes it so worthwhile. “As a father and grandfather I have enormous

respect for the work done by Hope House and am delighted to make this trip to help ensure the safety and wellbeing of the cyclists.” All involved with the ride pay their own costs, which ensures that 100% of any money raised goes direct to Hope House. Be sofa sturdy with SterlingOSB Zero furniture The UK market for wood panel products is dominated by the construction industry which uses different varieties for structural, aesthetic and fitting-out purposes. However, the second most important market for panel producers is furniture. One may, rightly, think that we are talking MDF, however, Norbord’s SterlingOSB Zero panel board is also proving a great success due to its inherent strength, durability and environmental characteristics. Norbord is the world’s largest manufacturer of OSB and has recently invested £110m in a new plant in Inverness, Scotland, with a further £35m planned for the future. A new family of products is a development of the most popular OSB brand in the building and interior design arena and comprises SterlingOSB Zero 3, SterlingOSB Zero Tongue and Groove,

SterlingOSB Zero SiteCoat, SterlingOSB Zero Fire Solutions and SterlingOSB Zero StrongFix. OSB3 is the most commonly used in the furniture industry. It is a BBA-approved, precisionengineered board. It now contains zero added formaldehyde and is unique in the market by being the only ZAF OSB manufactured in the UK. SterlingOSB Zero is even more environmentallyfriendly to produce than previous portfolios. Like all Norbord OSB products, SterlingOSB Zero is made from forest thinnings taken from sustainably managed forests. All of Norbord’s production sites in Europe are able to produce wood-based materials that are certified according to the guidelines of the FSC or PEFC. 01786 812921 www.norbord.co.uk

20 Interzum-Ligna preview

SCM at Ligna 2019 with its Smart&Human Factory At the five-day Hannover event, SCM will present a cutting-edge production model with highly flexible and modular automation and man-robot interaction systems. SCM, the world leader in the field of secondary woodworking technologies, is gearing up for the next edition of Ligna, having achieved a double-digit growth rate in the last two years which propelled the group to over the €700m turnover target at the end of 2018, with a technological range of products increasingly in line with Industry 4.0 requirements. After launching its Lean Cell 4.0 for highly automated industrial production two years ago, from this same Hannover event, SCM now goes further with its breakthrough concept of Smart Manufacturing. From its over 4000m2 booth in hall 13, the Italian woodworking giant will present its Smart&Human Factory: a cuttingedge production model based on digital and automation systems and allowing for advanced man-machine interaction and 360° control over the entire production flow. A model based on highly innovative, flexible, modular and easily reconfigurable systems, designed to respond in an increasingly effective and fast way to the challenges of mass customisation. A new Smart&Human Factory – also making progress in terms of work flow: thanks to the integration of robotics, low-added value and repetitive human tasks are now minimised.

FP307_Pages.indd 20

“Ligna 2019 will be one of the key international events for SCM – traditionally a historic and reliable partner for the entire woodworking industry,” explains the SCM division director, Luigi De Vito. “We will showcase top-level technological innovation, designed to support more and more companies in their business and help them meet new Industry 4.0 requirements. “The current, new production trends, which will be the focus of the next edition of Ligna, are expected to widen the gap between more and less intensively automated companies. By offering a new model of interaction between machines and industrial and collaborative robotics, ground-level logistic handling and software, SCM will have as its mission to help partner companies work toward achievable, successful and smart goals.” ‘You will never work alone’ The claim ‘you will never work alone’ effectively summarises the goal of the new SCM product range: to supply a user-friendly wood panel processing automation system, with the option to reconfigure the production process whenever this is necessary, to quickly process increasingly smaller order to production batches.

After previewing a working application of its Smart&Human Factory at the Open House 2019 event on 31st January through to 2nd February, which drew crowds to the company’s Technology Center of Rimini, Italy, SCM will show an even richer version at the next Ligna. An automated system for all the phases of furniture production will be presented: from furniture designing to the generation of machine programs and from panel processing to cabinet assembling. The process aims at optimising as much as possible panel cutting, edgebanding and drilling operations, so as to reduce waste, rejects and retooling requirements during product changeovers, to then reassemble orders back together at the end of the process and delaying customisation until this stage. With this system, low-added value and repetitive human tasks are minimised, thanks to the use of KUKA industrial anthropomorphic robots, assisted by collaborative Universal Robots in the final process stages – assembly, hardware insertion, glue dispensing and surface finishing – and ensuring totally safe conditions without the use of enclosures. Finally, process logistics are made flexible

30/04/2019 14:27

21 thanks to the use of MiR intelligent autonomous self-driving shuttles. The entire process will be managed and supervised by the Maestro Watch supervision software – monitoring the state of each of the products being machined throughout the process, and by the IoT Maestro Connect system – which collects and analyses SCM technology data, ensuring on the one hand full control over the production flow and, on the other, the implementation of smart predictive maintenance models. The digital frontier At Ligna 2019, SCM will add to its digital range, by combining digital technologies with high added value, specifically targeted services. The Digital Hub, the innovation control centre at the core of the exhibition booth, will display all the latest products. To meet the needs of 4.0 industrial production, the Maestro Connect IoT platform will be extended to new technologies applied to the wide range of SCM machining options – cutting, edgebanding, drilling and routing, nesting and edge machining – for both panels and solid wood. The data gathered and the information available increase thanks to the introduction of the new sensor kit specific for technology able to detect the changes in vital machine components, spotting any critical conditions of use or ones that are not ideal. This evolved data collection and analysis system originating from SCM, offers the client maximum control of the machine or plant’s product flow, achieve rapid, intelligent and foreseeable maintenance and an increasingly effective planning of a spare parts strategy. The launch of the new Maestro Active manmachine interface software is also show. Maestro Active – special mention at the last German Design Award – is the new operator interface which, combined with the touch eye-M control panel, revolutionises the way to interact

FP307_Pages.indd 21

with SCM technology. The project will be launched at Ligna on all the SCM machinery, offering all these technologies a single environment for use and a common graphic guise, making the operator’s work notably easier, reducing the risk of error and increasing productivity. For office software, as well as the supervision software for the Maestro Watch integrated cell systems, the Maestro CNC 2019 version will be released with major updates for CNC machining centres and drilling machines: user-friendly, intuitive software, which, most importantly, can be integrated and interfaced with other systems used by customers. One-stop partner for surface technologies SCM has always placed importance on surface

treatment and was the first to believe in the value of having Superfici technologies in its range for finishing, placing them alongside other solutions for finishing, sanding and coating, and enhancing this process stage. SCM offers its customers specific laboratories for this sector like the Superfici Technology Center in Villasanta, Monza, the Superfici Tech Lab in Villa Verucchio, Rimini as well as other finishing laboratories in foreign branches. On the strength of its vast and consolidated know-how, the Italian company will present its wide range of technologies for sanding, pressing and finishing at Ligna, distinguishing itself as a unique partner in the entire surface treatment process: a complete range of products and services as well as exclusive, sought-after finishing solutions, to meet all the process and end product type requirements. The innovative DMC system operating units which have transformed the concept of the sanding machine into a flexible abrasive modular machine, the Superfici spray painting systems and robot equipped glue application and the Sergiani 3D form membrane presses, that allow for uneven surfaces to be smoothed, are the technologies due to be presented to the furniture industry at the SCM booth. These solutions allow for surfaces to be prepared and treated to produce finished products with a 3D finishing effect like wave designs, hand smoothed, structured, saw cut and worm hole, capable of adding unique touch and visual sensations. At the Superfici booth (hall 16) the most exclusive finishing solutions will also be shown. These include, anthropomorphous and Cartesian robots for painting panels, fixtures, a vast range of sprayers aimed at the different application requirements and production capacity, the latest generation of roller painters and UV and UV LED driers.

Key launches characterised by automation for all SCM technology The vast SCM range, unique at international level in meeting the needs of the entire sector – from craftsmen to large industries – will present important new entries for models, devices, optionals and software, for every form of technology dedicated to secondary wood processing. Whether they are integrated into the Smart&Human Factory automated process or in stand-alone mode, the aim is always to meet the most varied demands of a custom and integrated production of a specific company without forgoing the advantages of industrial production. Solid wood sees the arrival of hypsos, the anticipated five axes machining centre with integrated cabin, designed for interior decorators and the three-dimensional processing of elements with a complex shape or large dimensions. The Accord 42 fx machining centre with dual operator unit combined with three and five axes, ideal for the production of windows, doors and stairs, is also being demonstrated. Of particular interest to solid wood chair, table, furnishing and object manufacturers is the balestrini power machining centre which will be shown with a complete makeover that makes set-up and use easier, with more powerful electrospindles and a further reinforced

FP307_Pages.indd 22

structure to guarantee high performance, reliability and safety. Timber construction will see the world preview of oikos x, the new machining centre, specifically designed to machine structural elements, X-lam/ CLT wall panels, fitted with the new six-axis machining head unit that allows any machining work to be carried out on every side of the element from a single position and in reduced spaces. New entries also for double ended squaring and shaping machines: at the trade fair you will get a chance to see the Celaschi p40 in operation, fitted with electronic spindle, an innovative solution which will soon be standard fitted on the whole range. Its aim is to continuously improve operating reliability and efficiency especially in more challenging tasks like the processing of particularly abrasive materials and the production of large-sized pieces. Other important new entries in panel technologies, starting with the new range of CNC Morbidelli x200 and x400 machining centres, that applies the best five axes all-in-one technology performance to nesting processing, in line with market demands increasingly focused on batch-one production and which, therefore, need to combine high speed and maximum flexibility in panel cutting outlines. On show for the first time at Ligna 2019 is also the new Morbidelli cx220 drilling centre, a focal point in the compact categories, providing even better performance in terms of finishing quality, precision and productivity, and Morbidelli ux200d, fitted with the exclusive dual variableaxis broaches and the new Clamex operating units for joints. The best of Gabbiani technology will take centre stage for sizing, with new devices aimed at processing delicate panels, in line with SCM’s keen focus on surface treatment. The Gabbiani sizing machines on display at the trade fair will include the exclusive Flexstore HP warehouse management system, characterised by the Saw-

Set device to make tool settings even faster and more exact. As far as edgebanding is concerned, there is great anticipation surrounding stefanicell, the new generation of cells for batch-one processing, with high-tech solutions, even with minimal investment, and the new pickback bridge system for the automatic return of panels, that guarantees simple, just-in-time production management. The Stefani range will present a new generation rounding unit with servo-assisted technology, designed to work even the most delicate panels with surprising continuity and quality. For the olimpic range, the new glue pot is worth pointing out, with technological solutions for a perfect line of glue and a new glue scraper to process panels coming from the nesting cycle. The solution put forward for assembly is the semi-automatic action E-clamp, aimed at assembled furniture manufacturers and a valid aid in assembling each part of the furniture with precision and quality. For the first time ever, the clamp will be presented with semi-automatic loading and unloading ergonomic systems, served by an input translation shuttle and 90° output flipper to make the subsequent stages of the work easier. There are numerous new entries for joinery machines too, the key ones being dictated by automation. To mention but a few, px 350i is the new circular saw with mobile cart and tilting blade up to 46°, that can house blades up to 350mm – up to 300mm using the engraver function. This ensures maximum safety while working, with reduced bulk and guarantees a perfect hold on the panel thanks to the exclusive presser. The Ready control positioned on the wall unit, guarantees motorised and programmed movement of the blade tilt and powered and programmable rear stop, guaranteeing a rapid, exact positioning and reducing operator movement. www.scmgroup.com

The Bürkle Technology Arena at Ligna – comprehensive excellence Ten excellence centres will be found at the Bürkle Technology Arena at Ligna in hall 17, stand F19. Bürkle will display its portfolio of services and solutions at its significantly expanded stand, with a focus on system automation using robot technology, spraypaint machines combined with system peripheries, digital printing, surface finishing and interdisciplinary engineering with 4.0 functionality for virtual start-up operations and system simulation in real time. System automation with robot technology For many years, system automation has been key to project planning in all Bürkle surface technology product segments. Bürkle has always had a high level of expertise in the deployment of a variety of workpiece manipulation. Alongside the development of automation solutions in linear technology, the Freudenstadtbased systems manufacturer has also strategically diversified. In the future, the company will focus even more strongly on automation technology. At Ligna, Bürkle will be presenting its work with a renowned global player in robotics with two automated manufacturing cells. Spray-coating and system peripheries The well-known machines from the ROBUSeco and ROBUSpro series will be presented in Hannover with a range of new process-related developments and innovations. It’s all about being faster, more economical, and more efficient. Faster colour change allows optional integration of a colour changing system. In addition, paint loss during colour changes is

FP307_Pages.indd 24

very low. The use of different colour cycles makes is possible to process different types of paint separately. During rotation spraying, Bürkle combines high-speed (up to 20m/min) with more efficient processing. In spite of the high feed rates, the machine runs very quietly (approximately 20rpm = approximately 125m/min circumferential speed). Automatic gun tracking enables perfect coating quality – even at the edges. In the entry-level segment, Bürkle complements the ROBUSeco series with a new handling system for semi-automatic loading and removal of workpieces. Digital printing technology Bürkle’s customers desire more differentiation and a high degree of flexibility. To meet these objectives, the group will present two singlepass inkjet printers for wood decor printing at LIGNA, together with a major, internationally active partner. This premiere will offer a unique range of applications for many wood composite substrates. Interdisciplinary engineering, 4.0 functionality With the Mechatronics 2022 project, the company group is turning its interdisciplinary engineering into a reality. Key to the project is the process of creating a digital twin of real

physical system. This enables virtual startup procedures and real-time system simulation. The approach of the digital twin offers Bürkle’s market partners a range of benefits, including the reduction of project commissioning time and lead. Product quality also increases thanks to verified machine behaviour on the simulator with less effort and time needed for in-factory prototype tests. Bürkle 4U, technology arena 4U Smart Surface Technology is one of the major topics at LIGNA. With solutions on show at the Bürkle Technology Arena, the company is demonstrating its full portfolio of services for digitalisation, automation and ever-increasing levels of individualisation. In response to the wishes of its market partner, 4U Orientation marked the start of Bürkle’s successful journey in Hannover four years ago. It will be followed up this year by Smart Surface Technology 4U. www.buerkle-technologies.com

Combilift shows off its handling expertise at Ligna Combilift, the Irish specialist manufacturer of materials handling solutions, will have plenty to show at Ligna on its extensive stand at the heart of the Outdoor Area (M61), as well as on stand G25 in hall 13. The company’s product range, which encompasses small pedestrian stackers, multidirectional forklifts and large Straddle Carriers, will be well represented at this year’s event. Around 18 models will be on show, all of which have been designed for the safe, space-saving and productive handling of the various loads that the timber sector needs to lift, transport and store. Sawmills, furniture manufacturers,

timber suppliers and joineries for example can all benefit from Combilift’s innovative products to keep things moving on the premises. Centrepiece on the outdoor stand will no doubt be the Combi-SC Straddle Carrier. This imposing machine, which is available with lift capacities of up to 100t, handles oversized loads such as modular buildings and containers. It has a very light footprint in spite of its size and is a cost-effective alternative for heavy handling forklifts and cranes and works on poor terrain without the need for costly ground reinforcement.

Combilift continues to add to its range of electric models and this is evident at Ligna – around half of the exhibits are electric powered and include a Combi-ST stand on truck, the Combi-WR4 multidirectional pedestrian stacker, a Combi-CBE counterbalance design four-way truck and the AisleMaster VNA articulated forklift. The majority of electric products from other manufacturers are designed for indoor use only but Combilift has answered the market demand for more versatile forklifts by incorporating rubber tyres into its electric range to enable them to

offer good traction on a variety of surfaces so that they can transition easily from inside to outdoors. C-Series models on display include the C5000XL, a robust diesel powered truck with high ground clearance, large operator cab and a host of features which cope easily with harsh operating environments and tough ground surfaces. Combilift aims to entertain as well as inform at Ligna, so the usual line up of dancing forklifts and Guinness will be available for visitors to enjoy. www.combilift.com

Combi-PPT wins FLTA Safety Award Combilift added yet another industry award to its ever growing tally when its Combi-PPT model won the Safety Category of the Fork Lift Truck Association (FLTA) Awards for Excellence 2019 on March 30th.

FP307_Pages.indd 30

The Combi-PPT is a high performance pedestrian-operated powered pallet truck, the first model of which was designed following a very specific request from a Combilift customer wanting to enhance operational safety and material flow in its manufacturing facilities. This proved to be so successful that the Combi-PPT was put into serial production last year and models with capacities from 3000kg up to 16,000kg are now available. Its design and features such as AC powered drive, steer and lifting technology, enable very large and bulky products to be manoeuvred with ease in confined spaces without the use of a ride-on forklift. Above all, it can also do this whilst ensuring maximum safety

when working in areas where other personnel may be present, in busy production plants for example, thanks to Combilift’s unique, patented multi-position tiller arm. This incorporates tiller and operator offset position with the touch of a button and enables excellent visibility from the side of the truck, also reducing any crush risk to the operator when working in tight spaces. According to the FLTA: “The jury was impressed by the PPT’s large capacity and its potential to replace counterbalance trucks, improving safety in pedestrian areas.” Mark Whyte, Combilift’s research and dvelopment manager, accepted the Archie trophy from

Andrea Maneti of the category sponsor Trelleborg. Combilift’s MD Martin McVicar comments: “We have won a number of awards from the FLTA over the years for innovation, design achievement, ergonomics as well as the unique Winner of Winners Gold Award in 2012. In the 25th year of the awards we are proud to have been recognised for our ongoing commitment to safer materials handing with the introduction of the Combi-PPT into our product range.” www.combilift.com

Lamello exhibiting at Interzum and Ligna

Interzum: hall 8.1, stand C019 Ligna: hall 13, stand B22 Swiss wood and panel fixings specialist, Lamello, will be returning to Europe’s largest furniture production and design show, Interzum and woodworking machinery and tools exhibition, Ligna, this May. Boasting a new, interactive stand design measuring 63m2 and 65m2 respectively, Lamello’s new P-System connector, the Tenso P-10, will be taking centre stage at the two back-to-back furniture manufacturing shows. The self-clamp connector has been designed with a unique gluing aid that not only alleviates the need for screws, clamps and presses but also gives the user the flexibility to glue thin materials from a thickness of just 12mm with no visible joins – offering design flexibility and precision on wood-based panels, high pressure laminates and solid timber. To show visitors just how simple and effective Lamello joining systems are, live demonstrations of the new Tenso P-10 connector and the complete P-System connector range, including the timesaving Cabineo, will be taking place on Lamello’s stands. Requiring no edge drilling, the Cabineo joining system, which is installed into a drilled or routed shape, is ideally suited to both three- and five-axis CNC machines and nesting processes. When compared with standard cam and dowel fittings, it also offers more efficient production, faster installation and a higher clamping force, eradicating unsteady joints. Working alongside its established CNC partners, Lamello will also show its range of CNC connectors – including the Cabineo Black which was launched last year – and run exclusive show offers. Keen to find out more? Visit Lamello at Interzum from the 21st-24th May 2019 in hall 8.1, stand C019 and Ligna from the 27th-31st May 2019 in hall 13, stand B22. 0789 1025 646 s.chatfield@lamello.com www.lamello.com

Kronodesign Combinations brings individuality to the widest possible market The current trend for mixing decors to achieve different moods and effects shows no sign of diminishing, and with Kronodesign Combinations, designers have a palette of contrasts, complements and new collaborations to meet consumer demand head-on. Flexibility is key in a market where customers are increasingly looking for something more than uniformity and ‘me too’ designs. Manufacturers need more decors to work with, to gain the mix and match capability to create new and varied looks. The decors must have more authenticity too; surfaces have to be evermore ‘real’ in tone and texture. These are the kinds of factors that Kronodesign Combinations has been created to address. The wide variety of moods in the range serves as an inspiring baseline for designers – chic matt plains, rich rustic oak, hickory, marble, concrete and more extend the possibilities for contrast and ambience creation. Kronodesign Combinations especially delivers in the woodthemed decors, there’s real depth and variance in textures and finish that compares favourably with veneers. The colours themselves faithfully reproduce the warmth and character of the timber varieties they reflect, with a natural appeal that’s firmly on-trend. The combining of ‘industrial’

FP307_Pages.indd 34

forms with rustic woodgrains is a particularly popular look in contemporary kitchen design, and Kronodesign Combinations reflects this consumer shift from clean cut clinical lines to more individualistic themes. Softening the looks for bedroom and bathroom contexts is simple, given the extensive choice of different decors in the range. Kronodesign Combinations is equally suited to standalone furniture design, and the needs of the hospitality and hotel sectors. In terms of the purely practical issues of manufacturing, the consistent quality of Kronospan boards makes for easy precision machining, uninterrupted production processes and minimised waste. Kronospan has also added an app to help users experiment with the looks and moods of the Kronodesign Combinations range. It’s an essential tool for planners, craftspeople, specifiers and interior designers, allowing them to select from many Kronospan décor ranges in addition to Kronodesign Combinations, and try out ideas and options digitally. The app is customisable, and also gives access to Kronospan’s new image gallery and mood boards. The app is available for download at https:// uk.kronospan-express.com/en/ kronodesign-app

Movac and Sayerlack – the natural choice Following the increasing trend for coatings that provide a natural appearance to timber whilst impacting on the environment as little as possible, Sayerlack has a host of high technology new products being launched in the coming months with its partner Movac. Two such new water-based coatings are the Sayerlack AF0618/00 Natural Wood Self-Sealing Lacquer and the AOV2343/00 Waxy Waterborne Oil. Sayerlack AF0618/00 Natural Wood is a low gloss (3% sheen) lacquer that can be applied onto all types of timber used in interior applications. It gives a natural effect leaving the look, touch and shade of the substrate unchanged.

A 2K water-based coating, Sayerlack AF0618/00 can be used with alternative hardeners, dependant on the timber species, to get the best performance. It is formulated with a new generation of resins which make it very resistant to ultra violet light and provides the lacquer with excellent chemical resistance properties. Suitable for use in a wide range of interior applications including furniture and flooring, Sayerlack AOV2343/00 Waxy Waterborne Oil provides a soft, natural and waxy effect with good chemical resistance tested to perform to the UNI EN 12720 standard. Sayerlack AOV2343/00 can be applied by all types of spray equipment, by cloth or by brush application. This extremely easy to use coating

FP307_Pages.indd 36

has the capacity to be used as a 1K or 2K product (to improve chemical resistance). It is applied as a two coat system with a light P320g sand between coats to give outstanding results. With a natural fragrance of beeswax, AOV2343/00 may be used as a clear coating giving a sheen level of 5% gloss or coloured using any of the ranges of water-based Sayerlack dyes and pigments to achieve the desired effect. These are just two of the sensational products from the new range of Sayerlack coatings. Hesse Lignal’s Fantastic-Clear multicoat lacquer raises the bar for fire-retardant coatings Redwood Innovations has seen a surge in demand for fire-retardant coatings in recent years and Hesse Lignal’s Fantastic-Clear multicoat lacquer not only meets, but exceeds current standards for fire-retardant coatings in the manufacturing industries. Fire-retardant coatings are no longer a want but are now a must for many UK manufacturers, with the main driver for doing so being safety. However, despite the demand from manufacturers, many traditional coatings sold on the market still lack fire-resistant properties and are even potentially flammable. Hesse Lignal has recognised this need for several years now and has been at the forefront of using innovative technology based at its Hamm, Germany headquarters to develop coatings which go beyond current standards for fire-retardant coatings.

Re al As part of its Fantastic range, Hesse has developed Fantastic-Clear – a highly resistant, lightfast polyurethane lacquer. When applied to veneered FR chipboard it will maintain to Class B-s1, d0; which is the classification of fire behaviour tested under EN 135011. This highly durable multicoat lacquer is suitable for a wide variety of environments – from commercial restaurants and shops, to the everyday homeowner’s kitchen and bathroom. As to be expected from Hesse, safety does not stop with the fire testing. Its coatings are free of wood preservatives, toxic-heavy metals, phthalate plasticisers, formaldehyde, and volatile aromatic and halogenated organic compounds, to ensure the safety for both the manufacturer and its customers. To find out more about Hesse Lignal’s FantasticClear lacquer, or to know more about the latest fireretardance regulations, contact Redwood Innovations. 02392 233310 sales@redwoodinnovations.co.uk www.redwoodinnovations.co.uk

Hesse SPEEDCARE-OIL

COAT I N G S

The use of high-grade oils in the surface treatment of exclusive furniture, staircases, parquet and wooden flooring, etc. adds a unique appearance and feel. This trend is unabated and therefore found its way into industrial series production many years ago.

Special types of oil are often used for industrial series production, which are either applied using rollers or have to be cured using high-energy UV light with correspondingly expensive equipment. The use of “classic” oxidatively dried oils is fairly limited, since they dry too slowly for serial production. Hesse has developed SPEEDCARE-OIL OE 52872 as a fast drying version. It is a spray oil with faster-drying (even after 1 h / 20 °C depending on application quantity). There is also the option of using halogen infra-red light to have the parts ready within minutes for further processing, or even for final curing and stacking. The rubbing in and removal of the excess required with classic oils is also unnecessary, providing a further time advantage. An open-pore, evenly accentuating matt surface with good mechanical and chemical resistance can be achieved with just two spray applications of SPEEDCARE-OIL.

The siccatives and low odour solvents used, which are also used in the cosmetics industry, are of course non-classified. It is Decopaint compliant and the dry oil surface meets the requirements of the latest EN 71-3 (Safety of children’s toys; 2017-10), DIN 53160 (Parts 1 & 2; Resistance to saliva and perspiration) and the requirements of DIN 68861 Part 1c or even 1b depending on wood species and the number of oil layers applied. This retains the beauty of precious woods through the appearance and surface feel only available through the use of high class oils.

In the Ostermann online shop, you can choose from 35 different models, each of which are available with several surface variants/colours. New: handleless systems made of real wood With Limbo 1 and Limbo 2, Ostermann offers two appealing handleless systems made of solid wood. These are particularly easy to process for the carpenter/cabinetmaker and add a natural touch to kitchens, living and working areas. Users can choose from two different wood types – oak and walnut. As accessories, matching end caps and an assembly kit are available. The new handleless systems are supplied in cut lengths with a standard length of 2450mm. On demand, Ostermann will supply the popular handle profiles made-to-measure, from a length of 200mm

Individual dimensions for aluminium handles upon request Aluminium handle profiles are available at Ostermann in cut lengths, with a standard length of 2500mm. While solid wood handles can easily be shortened by the carpenter/cabinetmaker, not every workshop has got the time and/or the tools to professionally cut and process the aluminium profiles. Therefore, Ostermann delivers all handle profiles made-to-measure upon request and from a length of 200mm.

The new handleless systems made of solid wood add a natural touch to kitchens, living and working areas

FP307_Pages.indd 42

This is how it’s done In a first refinement stage, the profile is cut with millimetre-precision. In a second step, the bar is trimmed at both ends of the profile. Finally, the cut edges are chamfered and finished. Bumps and traces of sawing are then being removed. The customised handle profiles are ready for dispatch within three days after ordering and are then sent ready for mounting. All information on the new handle profiles can be found by typing in the search term “real wood edging profiles” on the Ostermann website. 01905 793550 s.parsons@ostermann.eu www.ostermann.eu

Starbank brings value to the surface Its fair to say that leading UK fabricator Starbank Panel Products holds some very impressive technology at its 116,000ft2 manufacturing facility – and edgebanding capability is certainly one of them. With a very keen eye on future developments and technologies, this is an exciting time in the companies four decade history.

An ABS-edged panel

Operating both single- and double-sided Homag edgebanding lines, Starbank has the power and flexibility to deal with low-, mediumand large-batch quantities for interior fit-out and contract furniture projects – which are generally outsourced as OEM components. 4.0 networked together with leading barcode functionality, developed by both Homag and Starbank, for a number of years now, added to this a highly-skilled team of operators. Starbank ensures the highest possible quality to decorative components, edgebanding onto to a variety of substrates, including postformed elements with cornerrounding facilities. Starbank’s wealth of knowledge in this field had lead the company to develop its PURedge high performance edgebanding through a combination of adhesive technology, high-end tooling and IT initiatives. PUR (polyurethane reactive) adhesive technology is a high

performance solution where bond strength and 100% moisture resistance together with inconspicuous glue lines become a reality. Starbank’s adhesive specification, both physical and chemical in nature, is ideally suited for the application of ABS, 3D-acrylic (PMMA), high pressure laminate as well as solid hardwood lippings, which are an integral part of its Q-Mark Fire Door components. Starbank are so confident in this edgebanding technology that it provides this as standard on all its straight-edged panels. 01925 223965 sales@starbank-uk.com www.starbank-uk.com

Kite Packaging increases warehouse capacity Employee-owned business, Kite Packaging, supplies a wide range of engineered packaging solutions and systems across the UK. The company has announced that it has increased the warehouse capacity at its Swindon regional distribution centre with the installation of a 4000ft2 mezzanine floor. Servicing large customers in the South West of the country as well as south wales, the sales growth at Kite’s Swindon RDC has required the expansion of its facility to a total new warehouse capacity of 40,000ft2.

This latest investment follows several years of continued growth for Kite’s Swindon RDC since moving to its current location in June 2015. A Kite spokesperson comments: “As well as helping to maintain 100% OTIF to our existing customer base, the expansion of our warehouse capacity gives us additional space for new business customers trading with us from 2019.” Mezzanine constructions can be used for

storing a wide range of products or even provide another designated pick and pack area, giving businesses more room to grow rather than having to face costly relocation measures. If your company is looking for a service and solutions-based offering in the south west or south Wales area contact Kite’s team at Swindon which can arrange a visit to help find savings on total packaging costs. www.kitepackaging.co.uk

Celebrating Kenyon’s 40th anniversary in the adhesive world Over the last 40 years, the Kenyon Group has been challenged on a daily basis to find the answer to various adhesive problems and new applications. “You will be amazed at what we have been asked to bond,” says MD Ian Kenyon, “and the majority of the time we have surprised ourselves by providing the answer to some very difficult ‘sticky’ problems!” Ian continues: “The company was founded back on 11th May 1979 by the late Frank Kenyon, whose background was in engineering. At the time Frank was the managing director of Kenyon Process Plant who manufactured drying plant for the food and pharmaceutical markets, which predominantly manufactured in stainless steel. From the very humble beginnings and hard start, the company now distributes adhesives across the UK and Europe from three warehouses in Oldham. “So, what happened in 1979? Apart from the national headlines such as: Margaret Thatcher

Diversity is one of the keys to success. “Today, Kenyon Group Ltd is a recognised name in the adhesive world, supplying many different markets from woodworking and packaging to product assembly – it’s not surprising we like to say: ‘If you have an

adhesion problem, don’t come unstuck – talk to the adhesive experts.’ “Over the years we have seen many changes in the adhesive world, converting from solventbased to water-based adhesives and one component polyvinylacetate (PVAc)-based D3 adhesive replacing urea-formaldehyde when bonding flat lamination applications, with the environmental factor playing a major part in selecting an adhesive for a given application. Recyclable, renewable, even vegan are main focuses on 2019 adhesives, helping to keep the world from coming unstuck “ We pride ourselves on supplying proven adhesive technologies which deliver results, delivery on time across the UK and Europe from stock, and offering very competitive prices and technical support – the all-round package from one source.” 0161 627 1001 www.kenyon-group.co.uk

Think differently about Blum When manufacturers specify Blum products, they are signing up for more than hinges and drawer boxes. The Blum philosophy means that all touch points of their products need to be satisfied, with not only a superior product, but also technical expertise, training, aids in selling and end-user satisfaction, enabled with its matchless Lifetime Guarantee on all products.

Tip-On Blumotion which is a mechanical opening system (Tip-On), combined with Blumotion soft-close; and simple Blumotion – Blum’s tried and tested soft close mechanism. The Blumotion S runner can be used with both Legrabox and Movento drawers and ensures that manufacturers can offer different opening/ closing technologies without having to change their runner system.

Storage The innovative and popular Space Tower larder unit is the most efficient way of providing maximum storage space in a given area – up to 55% more usable space compared with fixed shelves. Each internal pull-out, be it Legrabox Pure, Legrabox Free or Tandembox antaro is individually fully extendable so there is no need to leave a void above each drawer for the removal of items, and the contents are wholly visible and accessible on three sides. Drawers can be up to 650mm deep and there are nine widths available, from 300mm to 1200mm.

Wall units Lift-up motion for wall cabinet doors means the door does not intrude into the room so is an advantage for smaller kitchens and bathrooms. Blum’s Aventos lift systems provide a system to suit even heavy doors, ensuring they can be opened all the way up or with a mid-stop function. Open with Aventos, close with softclose Blumotion, adding Servo-Drive or Tip-On technology for ease of opening handleless doors. There are four families of Aventos: choose from Aventos HF bi-fold upwards opening; Aventos HS swing up and over; Aventos HL upward parallel front lift and Aventos HK with upward pivot fronts.

New runner The Blumotion S runner works with three opening/closing technologies: Servo-Drive, Blum’s electric opening system for pull-outs;

reliable performance. The CLIP top Blumotion hinge combines ease of assembly (just clip the hinge into place) with near perfect motion, and integrated Blumotion closing – ensuring a silent smooth closing action. The Cristallo hinge for glass and mirrored doors has super-accurate stability and the new Expando T hinge, a German Design Award winner, is designed for ultra-thin (from 8mm) door fronts, a growing trend in kitchen design. Technical assistance The Blum technical helpline is available daily, 8am to 8pm and Saturday mornings, 8am to noon, while the Blum kit store sells assembly devices online, and also includes a link to sign up for training sessions, held at Blum UK in Milton Keynes. The Live Support App links straight through to the tech team, which will be able to advise and annotate directly onto a smartphone picture. 01908 285700 www.blum.com

Save time with Titus T-type hinges

FastFix hinge cup and pie-cut corner hinges are the latest additions to the popular and successful T-type hinge range from cabinet hardware expert, Titus. The new-generation T-type hinges reliably deliver the soft closing action preferred by end users and requires only a shallow hinge cup, which makes them suitable for use with door thicknesses ranging from 15 to 26mm – and they have passed FIRA tests for BS 6222-2-2009, Test Level H. FastFix hinge cup features pre-mounted 8mm diameter expanding dowels that enable precise tool-free insertion and hold the hinge cup accurately in place until the dowels are tightened, making hinge attachment quick and easy. Triplestart screws provide additional time savings. T-type pie-cut corner hinge offers full door opening to 170º, giving easy access to cabinet

FP307_Pages.indd 52

interiors. And, when both doors are opened, the first is locked at 25Âş to the second so that both move away from the user and are prevented from hitting adjacent cabinets. The pie-cut hinge uses a standard 35mm diameter drilling pattern and needs no edge drilling. The T-type hinges feature the renowned Titus Confident Close, the consumer-preferred reliable and consistent soft-close damping characterised by late-start deceleration and quiet landing in the last stage of closing as the door leans against the cabinet side. The proprietary Titus multi-purpose integrated damping technology is positioned transversal in the hinge cup, ensuring life-long damping with no bounce-back and superior performance. In addition, the hinges are exceptionally tolerant of misalignment and drilling variations. Their

unique 3Way tool-less snap-on mounting plate, which offers intuitive hinge-to-plate mounting in three directions, greatly simplifies door installation, especially with tall doors that need four or even five hinges. The unique design of the mounting plate reinforces stability and rigidity while maintaining smooth hinge operation. The hinges feature the renowned Titus Damper Inside technology, which ensures reliable and consistent life-long damping without rebounce. The dampers are single-direction hydraulic types that are fully sealed to eliminate the possibility of oil leakage. The damping is easy to adjust, which maintains consistent performance on doors with a wide range of different dimensions and weights. 01977 682582 www.titusplus.com

Glow+ sliding system is a silent operator Glow+, a sliding system for wardrobes with two, three or more overlapping doors, is now equipped with a revolutionary magnetic damping system that decelerates the opening and closing action and delivers an extremely fluent and silent movement. This innovative solution sets a new standard of silent and smooth sliding movement by eliminating the typical noise and resistance produced by spring-action dampers and enables the door to be easily opened. Glow+ can be used both with wooden doors and aluminium-framed doors, with a maximum weight of 70kg. Furthermore, with the use of an optional additional strengthening kit, the system can impressively carry doors up to 100kg. Assembling Glow+ is very easy and intuitive. It can be installed with screws or automatically with pressure-fixed clips. The system can also be equipped with a magnetic cover that provides further aesthetic enhancement. 01480 413831 www.saliceuk.co.uk

Accuride from JET PRESS opens new possibilities A drawer slide can be so much more than a way to open a drawer, especially if it’s an Accuride telescopic ball bearing drawer slide. JET PRESS customers are using Accuride slides to solve problems and innovate in lots of creative ways. Most people have more things and less space than before, so a number of companies are designing built-in furniture to make the most of the space beneath the stairs in people’s homes. To do this successfully the modules on the slides have to fit perfectly and stay that way. Accuride slides offer the precision and durability that makes this possible. By using a combination of full extension slides over 600mm with heavy duty runners and high load capacity, space under the stairs can be fully utilised. The self-close and push-to-open features mean under-stairs storage can be created without the need for handles. Another way JET PRESS customers use Accuride slides to

save space is with pocket doors. When you open one of these doors the slide allows you to fold the door back into a recess. Architects are creating kitchens that can be completely hidden by doors that fold away and furniture designers are using pocket doors for media cabinets and other furniture items. Increasingly popular are Linear Motion tracks that can be used for a range of sliding doors and other applications in domestic and commercial settings. For instance, the high load capacity of Accuride slides mean they can be used for worktops and table tops that can be slid out of the way when not in use. The team at JET PRESS is always happy to talk to designers about the best way to use Accuride slides to design better furniture. It has a long-standing relationship with Accuride so it can work on bespoke solutions if you have an unusual challenge. 01623 551800 sales@jetpress.com www.jetpress.com

A selection of G-WENDT’S felt polishing flap wheels and points

Smart abrasives and polishing tools for over 40 years Since its founding in 1971 by Gunter Wendt in Windeck, about 50 kilometres from Cologne, the company has become recognised as a trusted family-run business. It has preserved its traditional values as it has grown and evolved into the new millennia. With around 200 employees, Gunter Wendt’s (G-WENDT’s) employees collaborate daily with one goal in mind –to meet the needs of its customers. From an early age, the current managing directors of the second generation, siblings Frank Wendt and Marion Wendt-Ginsberg, got to know the subtleties of grinding and polishing products. To this day, they can count on the advice and experiences of their father and mentor, Gunter Wendt. In recent years, Frank Wendt has coached the company as it expanded its global presence. At the same time, Wendt-Ginsberg has overseen new product development as well as improving manufacturing efficiencies. G-WENDT manufactures a wide range of professional products for cutting, grinding, cleaning, finishing and polishing applications. It converts coated abrasives into a deep and broad range of abrasive products. For example flap discs, mini flap discs, folded flap discs, flap brushes, flap bands or its patented TWINPOWER discs. For finishing and surface preparation the company says it provides the highest quality non-woven abrasives and SCM materials. These are converted into poly power discs, quickchange discs, flap wheels on shaft, abrasive slit rolls and brushes. The product range is completed with its patented felt polishing products for creating an up to a mirror finish. With the G-WENDT FPM230 machine and its accessories it also The G-WENDT FPM230 machine offers a user-friendly and versatile solution for a wide range of surface applications. 60 Solid wood processing With 60% of its multi-million pound turnover dedicated to added value product, Brooks Bros is one of the UK’s first complete timber service providers to install Weinig’s Rondamat 1000 CNC tool grinder, raising the capabilities of its Danbury tool room to the next level. The company has also added the latest Weinig Powermat 1500 moulder with Powerlock tooling to its suite of advanced moulders at its Danbury site.

Brooks Bros and Weinig partnership for efficiency and flexibility Over the last decade, Brooks Bros has installed 24 machines from Weinig at its manufacturing sites in Danbury, Sewstern, Skelmersdale and Nottingham. Managing director, Mark Fleming says: “Our customers’ demand for machined and finished timber product continues – from straightforward planing to intricate mouldings and profiles – and now with our latest investment in the Rondamat 1000 CNC for the Danbury tool room, and the new Powermat 1500, we have the ability to meet every bespoke requirement our customers might have.” The Rondamat 1000 CNC is a fully automatic machine, driven by the lastest MoulderMaster software, without the need for an operator. Once set-up, it then runs unattended, with the MoulderMaster software negating the need for templates. Mark says: “The Rondamat 1000 is a gamechanging automated grinder. Its more accurate grinding of tools means our Powermat 1500 moulders can

now run up to 10% faster while still giving an excellent surface finish.” In addition to the Rondamat 1000, Brooks Bros has invested in a new Weinig Unicut P – the latest technology in the proven optimising cross-cut saw range and ideal for heavy hardwood sections; a Raimann VarioRip optimising rip saw; a new Rondamat 960 grinder and digital Opti-Control setting stand, and the Powermat 1500 moulder with Powerlock tooling.

The Powermat 1500 is the flagship moulder of Weinig’s new generation of Powermats. Weinig’s Powerlock tooling for the Powermat 1500 enables the machine to run at higher speeds up to 12,000rpm, doubling the production throughput of a conventional moulder and shortening availability times of product for customers. Weinig’s sales representatives Steve Cracknell, Simon Bridge and Dean Grimbley have supported Brooks Bros for many years, tailoring machine requirements to the company’s needs and providing full support. Brooks Bros has invested in Weinig products so it can respond to customers’ needs

61 quickly with fast setting times and running speeds, which gives a particularly good finish on hardwood mouldings. Mark Fleming says: “The dynamics have changed within the industry. Customers want machined products, often fully finished to their unique specifications and they buy from us. With the ability for short runs for small joinery firms to full scale production, we take on the responsibility of processing timber product and offer much more than just timber distribution. “Our customers, which include the doorset industry working in healthcare, commercial and high-end apartment construction and fit-out, demand very quick service of the highest quality and accuracy. With the help of Weinig technology and machinery, Brooks Bros delivers quality of the highest standard on time, every time.” Brooks Bros’ experienced machinists like using Weinig machines, citing their userfriendliness, ease of use and speed of setting. A major benefit of the Powermat 1500 is the ComfortSet, which makes operator settings very easy to adjust. Mark Fleming continues, “Weinig machines are the best in the world. The amount of work we put through is relentless. Our Weinig moulders

FP307_Pages.indd 61

process hardwood day in, day out, six days a week. The reliability of the machines and the reassurance of working with Weinig is not just nice to have; it is a necessity.” Every Brooks Bros site has Weinig Powermat moulders specified for more intricate mouldings and challenging profiles for windows and doors: “We wonder how we managed without them.” Brooks Bros sends its key personnel to Weinig’s advanced training centre for tool room operatives at Weinig Expo in Abingdon. The training centre

caters for all Weinig’s advanced computer-controlled training needs, from PowerCom to RipAssistPro. Senior production managers from Brooks Bros will once again be visiting Weinig’s global headquarters and machine production facility at Tauberbischofsheim, near Frankfurt in Germany, later in the year. Malcolm Cuthbertson, managing director of Weinig UK says: “With our shared ethos that ‘only the best will do’, Weinig UK has developed a strong relationship with Brooks Bros over the years and it really is a

perfect partnership. “Decades of Weinig’s wood processing experience and adoption of new technology have influenced the development of the new generation of Powermat moulders. This is an exceptional state-of-the-art machine which offers outstanding ease of use and helps maximise productivity for our customers.” For more information on Brooks Bros, visit www.brookstimber.com. 01235 557600 sales@weinig.co.uk www.weinig.co.uk

64 Solid wood processing

The Masterwood CNC family – Solutions for all Masterwood Spa is one of the leading suppliers dedicated to CNC solutions, supplying machines to over 100 countries around the world and it is still run by the three Italian families of Muti, Zangheri, and Boschetti that started the original companies over 50 years ago. A full range of machines that include the Muti oscillating chisel mortises, drilling machines, and routers, which are all built in Italy using proven designs and leading suppliers for components like HSD, Beckhoff, Yaskawa, THK, Schmalz, and Becker. Pod and rail CNCs Starting with an entry level Project 250, moving through the larger 300 and 400 Project series to the top end Project 500 range these CNC machines can be supplied in all formats for solid timbers, panels, composites, and other materials. This includes long or short beds, cantilever or gantry designs, manual or automatic beds, in three, four or five axis formats.

Flat-bed CNCs To complement the pod and rail range Masterwood has increased the range of Matrix beds for nesting and special works. These range from the entry 2500mm x 1250mm bed through a large range of sheet sizes up to beds of 7500mm in length and 2150mm in width. All the flat beds are to a heavy bed design by Masterwood with the gantries driven on both sides of the machine bed for added accuracy and long-lasting reliability. The flat bed range can have infeed and outfeed systems to automate the production, allowing full sheets to be loaded, fully machined, finished panels pushed out, and the bed cleaned before the next sheet is loaded. On top of this a manual or fully automatic arm can be added for sticking labels on to the sheets prior or after machining. Special CNCs To add to the main CNC range Masterwood then produce dedicated machines like the 4WIN

(windows), Project Door (full size doors), DoorLine (door locks and hinges), Teknomat and MultiMill (window and frame components). These machines can be manually fed, or in most cases supplied with a mixture of automatic loading and

unloading equipment, including robots, the employees of the future? Special beds and sizes can also be produced for any of the Masterwood CNC range. Production lines In recent years Masterwood has been asked to provide more and more automated production lines to leading manufacturers around the world. This has covered such products as windows, doors, frames, staircases, coffins and sun glasses ‌ The special systems have included such items as inserting weather seals into components, selecting and fixing locks into housings, special beds for machining gun parts, and special drill heads for multi-drilling acoustic panels. Dedicated software Developments and improvements to the CNC machines is one thing, but the biggest changes have been with software. As Masterwood’s PCs have become more powerful than the software has too, allowing customers to produce programs that consist of thousands of lines of code in minutes, allowing carvings and intricate work to be

FP307_Pages.indd 64

30/04/2019 14:28

65 produced on the very basic threeaxis machines, often dismissing the need to go to more expensive five-axis machines and software. Masterwood has always produced software with its own companies, but to take this to higher levels it now works under contract with some of the leading software houses, which ensures that machines and software are fully compatible at all times. All the machines are supplied with the tried and tested MasterWorks Cad/Cam, an easy to use, but powerful package for most CNC work. To add to this there are dedicated packages to cover staircases, windows, door sets (timber frame and solid core), traditional box windows, cabinets, furniture and louvres. The latest introduction is Master 3D software for threefour- and five-axis work, which takes programing possibilities and versatility to new levels and can include full 3D viewing simulation and anti-collision checks. Any of the packages can be added to a customer’s machine at any time, giving them the ability to change direction or production

methods if required. All the Masterwood software packages come with full on-site installation and training to meet the customer’s manufacturing needs. Support Selling and supplying machines is one thing, supporting and helping customers is the next stage: in Masterwood’s eyes it is the most important. For first time buyers CNC is likely to be the biggest investment the company makes, so it is important that it sees the results on its production as soon as possible and feels comfortable with the direction it has taken. Masterwood GB uses up to 12 technicians in the UK and Ireland to cover the installation and training for CNC machines and software, support and back up, servicing, repairs, and breakdowns, plus upgrading old machines to be more compatible with the new machines when installed. It also has the expertise of its Italian company staff to help with the more specialised jobs when required. It has over 300 companies in the UK and Ireland using its machines

and software, many of these are family run, and within time Masterwood finds they totally relies on its CNC, so if there are problems, for whatever reason, it is important that they are back running in the shortest time possible. Masterwood’s growing team has vast knowledge and experience of the Masterwood machines, not just today’s models, but those produced in the last 30 years, many still operating every day including CNC machines and the Muti oscillating chisel mortisers.

For Masterwood GB its customers are of paramount importance, they become its showrooms, in many cases new sales have resulted from visits to see existing customers’ machines in operation, and the good reports that are passed on, so it is in the company’s interest to provide the best service for its growing family of customers, and it never loses sight that there is always room for improvement. 01293 402700 www.masterwood.com

66 Installation A gauntlet was thrown down to Bürkle by painted door manufacturer In-Doors to ascertain whether its ROBUSpro machine could cut the mustard regarding the manufacturer’s J-handle.

New Bürkle spray coating machine for painted door manufacturer In-Doors “If you can coat the J-handle I will buy your machine”, said Sean O’Neil, owner of company In-Doors in Antrim in Northern Ireland more than a year ago. At Ligna in 2017 staff from In-Doors and Bürkle met for the first time to discuss the spray coating technology developed by Bürkle. Martin Brümmerstädt, project manager at Bürkle for the spray coating developments and Sean O’Neil had a very detailed discussion about the new ROBUSpro spray coating machine. Up to this point In-Doors coated all the high quality kitchen doors in five manual spray booths. Sean and his team focus on high quality. The doors are painted in the same colour for the base- and topcoat which lifts the quality to another level but on the other hand makes the process even more complicated. The doors are produced in small batch sizes and the individual colours are all mixed, ie, made-to-order at InDoors’ factory. The requirement was to change parts of the production to an automated spray coating process. Bürkle is a relatively new player in this field and was open for ideas and listened to the customer’s requirements. Fast colour changes with an absolute minimum of paint loss during the colour changes were some of the most important requirements. The first test coating was completed at Bürkle’s Tech Centre in Freudenstadt, Germany and the exact requirements were pointed out by the customer in more detail. Both Sean and Robert Thomas – representative of paint supplier Sherwin Williams – directed the attention of Bürkle’s spray

FP307_Pages.indd 66

coating team in detail to the more important points. Bürkle understood the requirements and modified certain parts of the machine for this application. After another meeting in Northern Ireland, In-Doors and Bürkle decided to start the project together. Part of the project was also the integration of an existing Kremlin mixing unit for paint and hardener into the machine. This opened the way for a flexible solution so that In-Doors got the chance to change one colour while the machine sprays another colour. The whole system was fully tested at Bürkle’s factory in Southern Germany before it made its way to the customer in Northern Ireland. At the

same time the existing building at In-Doors was modified to make space for the new spray coating machine and keep the same logistics with the existing drying rooms. After the installation and training the machine started the production. The quality of the coated doors, including the J-handle, is exactly as expected by Sean. He confirms with a smile: “The machine was made in Germany but developed in Northern Ireland!” The UK and Ireland distributor is FEN UK. 01332 516557 www.fenuk.com

The Homag KAL 370 flexLine with Loopteq O-500 return system for panel return

Sven Christiansen invests in new edgebanding and CNC solutions from Homag UK Sven Christiansen is a privately-owned, British furniture manufacturing company, grown from a partnership established in 1974. The company designs and manufactures solutions for all office furniture applications and environments, including office desk systems, reception desks, conference and meeting tables, office screens and wall storage systems, together with a comprehensive range of seating. “With a turnover of around £13.5m Christiansen has a long-established reputation as a company of great integrity,” explains operations director, Patrick Rudge. He continues: “We stand behind our word and products, and always strive to provide the highest quality office furniture together with the very best service and value. In the rare event of an issue, we do whatever is necessary to resolve it to the customer’s satisfaction. “The business has an extensive portfolio of standard products, however, a significant part

FP307_Pages.indd 68

of our production comprises of custom items. These may be variations on standard products or entirely bespoke items. “To achieve quality and reliability, we have always invested in the best woodworking equipment available. Our partnership with Homag UK has grown out of this approach. The majority of machinery in our facility is from Homag; we even have a 27-year-old BP15 CNC machine which is still working on a daily basis. More impressive, perhaps, is the fact that we can still get spare parts for it from Homag!” Changes in demand drive need for new machines “The move away from producing two or three hundred pieces of a particular item towards batches of one, two or three items was putting pressure on our business. Batch size one production requires constant changing of setups, particularly on edgebanders. We were losing valuable production time having to manually do

this and so we decided to invest in a machine that could handle such changes automatically. “Additionally, we needed to free-up some of our team to work in other areas, so we wanted a machine that could be operated by one or two people. “When it’s time to invest in new equipment Homag is always on our short list. In this instance, it was the knowledge and experience of Homag’s Matt Long that swung the deal their way. We told Matt what we needed the edgebander system to achieve and he came back with a number of options for us to consider.” Homag KAL 370 flexLine with Loopteq O-500 return system “After visiting a number of factories in the UK who had similar equipment we settled on the Homag KAL 370 flexLine edgebander (now known as the Edgeteq S-500) with a Loopteq O-500 return system. The beauty of this

30/04/2019 14:28

69 configuration is that you can put any size of panel through it and it automatically processes it without having to manually set up for each different-sized panel. “The model we chose has an edge tape magazine that holds up to 12 different tapes which are automatically changed as required. The KAL 370 also has the airTec glueless edge system which creates a superbly finished, seamless edge. “The return system even enables the edgebander to be operated by just one person. Once the panel has been edged on one side it automatically goes onto a return conveyor which takes it back to the operator. He then turns the panel and puts it back onto the machine to do the next edge. The flexibility this gives us is immense, as are the time and labour savings. “Our old double-sided edgebander is often only operating productively for four hours in an eight hour shift, the rest of the time taken up with changing settings. With our new KAL 370, we can run it continuously throughout the shift, so our productivity is massively increased. “The new machine is also very easy to operate. We sent our people over to Germany for training before the machine was delivered. Then, once it had been installed, the Homag engineer provided more training at our premises, staying until our guys were one hundred per cent happy.” The Homag Centateq E-310 CNC “We took delivery of our new CNC machine just a month after the edgebander had been installed. This Homag Centateq E-310 CNC was a replacement for an older model. Again, one of the main drivers here was to have a machine that was both more productive and accurate. “The need was for a CNC that would enable us to machine complex parts and also edge the shaped panels. The E-310 is the perfect match for us. All of the essential functions are in clear view and mounted directly on the machine. “The operators can see what’s going on through the large window and because, due to Homag’s latest advances in safety technology,

Homag software makes machinery simple to operate

there are no prohibitive barriers around the machine, the operators have easy access to the table from any side. “There is so much this machine can do; it’s perfect for batch size one production. The table clamping system is quick and easy to use with its LED positioning system and the woodWOP software used to operate the machine is fast and intuitive. From drilling and routing through to sawing and edgebanding, it is a tremendous piece of kit.” Excellent working relationship “One of the factors that keep us going back to Homag time and time again is the excellent working relationship we have with their people. Everyone from Matt Long to the installation engineers and administrative staff is thoroughly professional, friendly and helpful. They are a pleasure to deal with. “As for the machines themselves, they are extremely reliable and the quality of the finished furniture we produce using them is first class. The Sven Christiansen brand is known in the industry for high quality, so it is vital for us that

we maintain this level of finish and Homag help us to do just that.” “From a financial point of view, we’ve saved on time and labour costs, particularly with the KAL 370 flexLine edgebander with its Loopteq return system. It can be run by one operator or two if we are running large panels. Compared to our double-sided edgebander which needs four operators, this delivers huge savings. “As far as the CNC is concerned, it is much more accurate than our previous machine and consequently, it too gives us a better finished product. Additionally, we can cut, shape and edge the panels all on the one machine which makes life much more efficient and straightforward. “Overall, we’re delighted with the new Homag equipment and we believe the machines will pay for themselves in well under five years,” concludes Patrick Rudge. For a demonstration or more information about Homag edgebanding systems or CNC solutions, contact Adele Hunt at Homag UK on 01332 856424. www.homag.com

Energy-saving DCS retrofit for Rosebirch The joinery workshop at Rosebirch Ltd is now cleaner and quieter thanks to a new dust extraction filter unit and energy-saving Ecogate system supplied and installed by Dust Control Systems Ltd. Rosebirch is a second generation family-run business, operating from a modern 12,000ft2 manufacturing facility at High Spen – a former mining village in Tyne & Wear. Utilising materials as diverse as hardwood and glass, metals, veneers and solid surfaces, Rosebirch specialises in bespoke fabrication for the fit-out of retail and commercial spaces, and has established a reputation for its work on projects throughout the UK and Europe. The joinery workshop at Rosebirch is well or more powerful equipped with a machinery, DCS wide range of wood proposed the installation and panel processing of a filter unit that was machinery, including an sized to handle around array of saws, sanders, 22kW main fan and 75% of the total combined planers and a high-speed CARZ explosion extraction requirement of all CNC router. However, the isolation valve the machines in the factory.” ageing filter unit was no longer To achieve this 25% reduction in capable of dealing effectively with extraction requirement, and the obvious cost the extraction volumes being demanded by the savings this could realise, the system design company’s high speed production machinery and, proposed by DCS would employ Ecogate energyinevitably, a replacement was necessary. saving technology, with Ecogate automatic Dust Control Systems (DCS), on personal dampers retrofitted into the existing ductwork recommendation, had been invited to review system. Accompanied by Ian Rayner, Ecogate’s the company’s extraction requirements and Ray sales manager, Ray and Stephen visited another Townley, area sales manager for DCS, visited DCS customer in the North east to observe an Rosebirch to discuss the project with managing Ecogate system in action, and to get first hand director, Stephen Flynn. “Due to the varied and feedback from an end user on the potential bespoke items being manufactured at Rosebirch,” benefits. says Ray, “the factory is kitted out with a wide “With Ecogate technology, the extraction system range of dust-producing machines but, for most is optimised to provide the exact extraction volume of the time, only a handful of those machines are required, at any given point in time, depending actually in use. Ecogate greenBOX12, PowerMASTER variable speed drive unit, and DCS control cabinet

“The savings calculations, based on the predicted reductions in electricity costs derived from optimising the fan speed, compared with the cost of electricity needed to run the fan continuously, at full power, throughout Rosebirch’s working day, convinced Stephen that the initial outlay on Ecogate would be a sound investment.” At Rosebirch, DCS installed a greenBOX12 controller and PowerMASTER variable speed drive unit, along with a total of 12 Ecogate automatic dampers, which were all installed into the existing ductwork system. Externally, DCS supplied and installed an NFSZ3000 2HJLR Rotary Valve Filter, powered by a 22kW direct drive main fan, providing an air volume capacity of 15,000m3/hr. Filtered dust is delivered pressure-free from the filter unit, via a rotary valve, to a waste collection skip. The filter unit employs patented antistatic Superbag filter media, and a reverse air regeneration fan provides effective cleaning of the filter bags. Inspection and maintenance of the filter media is facilitated by side doors, which are accessed via an elevated steel walkway, and cleaned, warm air is recycled to keep the factory warm in winter, or dispersed to atmosphere in the summer. “As soon as the new filter came on-line the increased strength of the suction was immediately apparent,” says Stephen, “but, because the extraction fan was only running when needed, and only extracting from machines that were being used, the overall sound levels on the factory floor have been significantly reduced.” Rosebirch’s upgraded extraction system complies fully with ATEX regulations, and also includes a CARZ back-pressure isolation valve which, in the event of an explosion in the filter unit, prevents the effects of a pressure wave and flames travelling back along ductwork, and into the factory. The return air ductwork has been retained from the previous installation and Gallito’s FastClip ducting has been used to complete external connections. 0800 040 7116 www.dcslimited.co.uk

Fabretec – bringing affordable CNC solutions to the UK market For many joinery companies, the idea of investing in a professional CNC router is daunting especially with the prospect of spending in excess £50-60k. Many companies simply give up and carry on doing the projects the old way. Adn whislt there is nothing wrong with proper craftsmanship, when budgets are tight, and labour costly, directors must look everywhere for savings, or, the opposite – intelligent investments. “As a joiner for many years, I had to look at my employees doing doors recesses for upholstery panels by hand or routing grooves in frames slowly one by one,” explains Goldcrest MD Charles Slowikowsky. “If you are doing one or two it’s ok, but looking at 40 doors waiting to be done using a 19th century operation, you know your patience will run thin in no time. That’s where the idea came to supply top of the range but with the affordable price CNC machining centres to UK market. “After years of using CNC in woodworking environment, distributing Polish-made CNC routers and plenty of trips to Chinese factories, we introduced the Fabretec brand to the UK market. Starting from literally £8000 for an M0 1325 CNC with vacuum bed and single-phase connection, through to £20,000 for the 1325/2030 professional CNC with automatic tool changer to fiveaxis machines capable of carving ‘Michelangelo’ wooden sculptures – we have it all in our offer,” says Charles. “Our main drive in business is

‘CNC for everyone’ as we want to bring those time-saving machines to every workshop in UK. Even the larger firms are investing in our machines being able to quickly notice tens of thousands of pounds savings when compared to well known brands. “Of course, those big players provide beautiful and state-of-theart machines but very often most of the ‘bells and whistles’ are not needed for lots of operations – and this is where Fabretec machines steps in. “What is very important in my opinion is that we are constantly present in the Chinese factories implementing new solutions, providing help with quality control and in many cases training Chinese engineers to use more efficient ways to achieve same result in the machines build up,” says Charles, “the years as a joiner are really paying off!” From May this year, Machines by Goldcrest is introducing CO2 Laser machines for cutting and engraving and Fiber Laser CNC’s for the metalwork industry. “As Fiber laser machines are quite a recent technology, their prices were huge for smaller companies starting from £200,000-250,000. As the technology has improved over the years the price dropped down significantly, but still, they start from £80-100,000 for basic machines – our Fabretec Fiber Lasers CNC start from around £40,000, so I think everyone who is doing professional metal cutting services can afford that.” www.machinesbygoldcrest.co.uk

Homag opens doors for Hazlin of Ludlow Since the company’s incorporation in April 1974, Hazlin has devoted itself to becoming the best manufacturer of bespoke architecturally veneered doors, panels, frames and other related joinery items. Operating from its 40,000ft2 premises in Ludlow the company has a turnover in excess of £7.5m. “Over the years, we’ve developed specialist expertise in everything from door design and fire resistance to veneer matching issues and acoustic ratings,” explains Hazlin of Ludlow’s managing director, Chris Jones. He continues: “In the 45 years we’ve been in business, the market has changed beyond recognition and so have the manufacturing processes. “Our goal has always been to ensure that the business has the capability to keep pace with the changing needs of the market. It is for this very reason that we have recently invested close on £1m pounds to improve our manufacturing efficiencies. “A major part of this investment has gone into new machinery from Homag UK. Hazlin has been dealing with Homag for more than 20 years now and in that time we’ve come to appreciate the quality and technical advantages their equipment brings to the table.”

“Homag’s ‘saw & store’ system has changed all that. Our set-up uses the Storeteq S-500 linked to the Sawteq B-400 beam saw. It has revolutionised the efficiency of the saw and given us ultimate traceability of our stock. That’s really important for us; it’s so much better and more accurate than the old paper system. “Now we can prove exactly what product has been used in each job which, when you make fire doors, is extremely important for third party accreditation. In terms of efficiency, the results are even more impressive, with our throughput having increased dramatically. “Currently a cut list is being completed within around six days of being issued and we plan to get that down to three days as we maximise the

system’s potential. Historically, with the manual storage and retrieval system, it took two to three weeks to complete each cutting list, so the efficiency gains are massive. “Also, we can now operate the saw with one person, not two which means we can deploy the second member of the team to carry out important tasks elsewhere in the facility.” Homag Edgeteq S-800 with Loopteq return system “The second area where we were looking to gain improvements in efficiencies was edgebanding. Our existing machine was nearly 20 years old and required five people to operate it when we were running at full capacity.

The Homag Centateq P-300 CNC – reliable performance

A bottleneck in storage and retrieval “Increasingly, we were experiencing downtime on the saw because of issues in retrieving stock. We have the capability to use a wide variety of cores in our door production and this brought its own challenges when it came to storage and retrieval. “The less popular door cores had a habit of ending up at the bottom of a pile of stock, so it tended to take a long time to find the relevant core, de-stack it, deliver it to the saw and then go back and re-stack the door cores we’d moved to access it.

Homag Edgeteq S-800 with Loopteq return system for increased production efficiencies

“We sat down with Jon Lawman, our contact at Homag, and briefed him on what we wanted the edgebander to deliver. He came back with a very thorough proposal for the specification at a competitive price and so we went ahead and ordered the Edgeteq S-800 with a bespoke return system that would handle the various door sizes we produce. “The new S-800 runs at 18m/min compared with the old machine which could only produce 10m/min. What’s more, we are able to achieve this with just two operators, giving us further labour efficiencies. “The new machine has the potential to edge doors up to 76mm thick with solid wood lipping. This is very important for us as many of our doors are over 60mm thick. For our purposes, we specified the PUR glue system which gives us a good visual appearance with a very strong bond.”

The next generation CNC “Rounding off our investment with Homag, we have a new Centateq P-300 CNC on order which is due for delivery in the second quarter 2019. We already have two Homag CNCs which have consistently performed reliably and delivered excellent results. As a consequence, when it came to ordering a new machine, Homag was our first choice. “The Centateq P-300, with its five-axis spindle, will be a great addition to our CNC portfolio. It will easily handle lock case routing, step drilling for drill-in hinges and precise mitre cuts. As with the other new machinery, this CNC will further improve our efficiency.” A professional company with first class machinery “When you invest in Homag machinery you know what you are going to get. The kit is reliable and

FP307_Pages.indd 77

well engineered, as you’d expect from a German company. Not only that, but because Homag is the global market leader, you also know that the machines are at the cutting edge of technology. “The Homag UK team are always willing to support us. For example, the purchase package Homag Finance put together through Deutsche Bank for the purchase of the new machines was simple to arrange and tailored to our needs. “As a company, they always seem to be looking for ways to improve their products and service levels. It’s an approach which sets them apart from many of their competitors,” concludes Chris Jones. Wood Waste Technology helps another exhibition company save money A Banbury exhibition company has purchased a wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology (WWT) to save money on waste disposal costs and obtain free heating for its workshop. Modex Exhibitions specialises in exhibition stand design and build so generates a lot of timber, MDF and other wood waste as a result of its manufacturing process. Director of Modex Exhibitions, Rob Brooks had seen one of Wood Waste Technology’s wood waste heaters in a neighbouring kitchen-manufacturer’s premises on his industrial estate, so he saw first-hand how investing in a wood waste heater could reduce his business operating costs. As a result, he phoned WWT to arrange a site survey and quote. After speaking with WWT, the company ordered a wood waste heate – installed earlier this year. Modex Exhibitions also ordered a

WT15 with an additional summer heat dump, to allow the business the option to send unwanted heat to atmosphere, rather than into the factory, to allow the team to continue using the heater to burn wood waste throughout the warmer summer months. MD of WWT, Kurt Cockroft says: “We’re finding many exhibition companies are looking at biomass solutions, due to the amount of waste wood that is generated in that industry, and the speedy payback on investment.” www.woodwastetechnology.com

Felder recommends Cabinet Vision to CNC novice Until just over a year ago, building and joinery company Neighbour Construction had never used a CNC machine, and didn’t know that combining it with specialist software could help transform the business. When Neighbour Construction invested in a Felder Profit H 200 pod and rail machining centre, Felder recommended it program it with Cabinet Vision software, as almost all its work is bespoke. Now, Neighbour Construction director Dominik Dubaj says Cabinet Vision has eliminated all human error and means the company can cut around 16 cabinets for a kitchen, and have them sanded with a primer coat applied, within a day or two. And bedroom wardrobes which would have taken two or three days to make previously, can now be produced in around five hours, to the pre-assemble stage. “We had zero knowledge and experience of working with CNC machine tools, but saw immediately that the standard proprietary software was not going to be effective in creating programs for the bespoke products we manufacture – the calculations would have simply taken too long. “From the very beginning Cabinet Vision removed any issues we had previously with manual work where panels sometimes weren’t square and had to be redone. We’d only find those problems when something wouldn’t assemble properly on site. But Cabinet Vision ensures every panel is 100% accurate, and means that our installations now take just one or two days instead of a week.”

Cabinet Vision gives Neighbour Construction greater capacity

Neighbour Construction says Cabinet Vision has eliminated human error

Neighbour Construction has recently replaced a panel saw with a Felder CF 741 S combination saw, and even though Cabinet Vision doesn’t program it as it’s a manual machine, the software does play a large role with it. “Cabinet Vision has been specially configured for us to generate a cutlist for precutting the panels on it,” says Dominik Dubaj. The company worked with the same type of bespoke User Created Standard (UCS) for their previous panel saw, too. “We use the Cabinet Vision cutlists to precut the panels on the combination saw, oversized by 6mm. Then the software generates precision dimensions for finishing on the Profit H 200 pod and rail machine. These correspond to the design, and the program includes features, such as holes for our cam and dowel joints.” As well as manufacturing and fitting joinery products, the software means it can also offer its products in flat-pack format, for customers who want to carry out the assembly themselves. It guarantees that the panels have the required high precision throughout, including overall dimensions, and the positioning of the cam and dowel holes.

81 Neighbour Construction was formed in 2006 as a building company, working on walls, roofs, steelwork and foundations, before expanding to provide fit-outs with joinery and cabinetry for kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms. Having successfully built a strong reputation, Dominik felt the time was right to take the company to the next level, which involved moving to a bigger workshop and investing in CNC machinery. At 3000ft2, its current premises in Edmonton, North London, is between three and four times the size of the company’s old factory, and it now operates with five employees. “The combination of machinery and Cabinet Vision helps keep costs down, while ensuring that everything we produce is right first time, every time.”

Cabinet Vision ensures every panel is 100% accurate and means that installations now take just one or two days instead of a week

Working mainly with moisture-resistant MDF Medite, birch plywood, and other veneered MDFs, the first part of its process is to design the individual cabinets and the room layout in Cabinet Vision. “We even use it if we’re only creating a couple of cabinets. I can’t imagine doing any joinery cabinet work without it now. The 3D design already has the NC codes behind it, which means we only need to do the work once. Then we produce the cutlists. The process really is that simple. “With Cabinet Vision we have an image of what we’re cutting, so we can see the panels both on-screen and on printouts, and we have a list of dimensions for the operator to follow, along with the labels for each panel which are printed

FP307_Pages.indd 81

in sequence. Our machine operators follow the cuts on the list, and we can easily keep order of the panels, and know which programs need to be executed to build a bespoke cabinet. “It also shows the amount of material we need, which helps us get accurate costings.” In conclusion, he says Cabinet Vision gives the business greater capacity, as it only takes a couple of days to get product from design to installation, if necessary. “I can’t imagine producing precision products this quickly if we were using traditional methods. Cabinet Vision makes a major contribution to us being a real game player today,” says Dominik. 0870 446 2667 www.hexagonmi.com
