Comment As we embark on the holiday season, I have to say that the torrid state of affairs that our politicians seem to have put themsleves in, and the unenviable task of the shambolic Brexit negotiations means that my typically upbeat outlook at this time of year is somewhat dimmed by those who are paid handsomely to serve us. Currently it’s difficult to see that silver lining, or any of the other so-called benefits of leaving … we can only hope for clarity in the new year and hope for a speedy and best-possible outcome. My feeling is that although business and trade will always find a way, many companies from raw material suppliers to retailers are entering the new year with considerable caution. How long this suspended animation will last is quite frankly anyone’s guess.

In closing the year out, it’s always good to look back at some highlights – one of which has to be the excellent W Exhibition and Elements show in October. For those who were unable to attend, you missed a fantastic opportunity to get up close to working machinery and compare like-for-like with their competitors. As a regular reader, if you were unable to attend, I am sure you will have noticed the coverage across our title over the last six months. And of course, being every two years, we’re only 19 months away from the next event – here’s hoping we’re clear of Brexit by then! This year, we also launched the first phase of our Connect project at the W Exhibition, and this has already been well-received by those I have spoken with. It’s an old-fashioned trade directory with a smart online brother too. Should you not have been privvy to the selected initial circulation, printed copies of the 300-plus page reference directory are available via the website, or by calling the office direct. Enjoy the holidays, and here’s to a more progessive and productive 2019.

Servicing, LEV testing, training – Daltons Wadkin provides complete support package Mounting pressures on workshop managers to meet strict production deadlines can mean that more routine but essential work is pushed down the to-do list. Daltons Wadkin can ease the burden by offering a complete support package including planned preventative maintenance (PPM), local exhaust ventilation (LEV) testing and certificated operator training. Having these core elements of workshop safety covered by one expert supplier reduces administration costs and helps ensure legal obligations are not overlooked. It is important to remember that regulation five of PUWER requires that every employer shall ensure that work equipment is maintained in an efficient working order and in good repair. With a PPM contract

from Daltons Wadkin routine service visits include a multi-point check covering safety features – guarding, stopping times etc – mechanical component checks and resetting factory datums where applicable. A detailed report is then submitted highlighting any remedial action required. LEV testing is an area often overlooked by employers. Wood dust can cause asthma, which carpenters and joiners are four times more likely to get compared with other UK workers. Chapter ten of HSG258 states that every employer’s LEV system requires statutory thorough examination and testing by a competent person. The maximum time between tests is set down in COSHH and for most systems is 14 months. In practice this is normally taken to mean annually.

Combining a machinery service visit with an LEV inspection therefore makes perfect sense. Daltons Wadkin’s P601 qualified inspection engineers will make a thorough examination and on completion submit an LEV report showing areas that do not comply. Lack of supervision and inadequate training is a dangerous combination in any working environment, but especially in the woodworking industry. To comply with regulation nine of PUWER employers must ensure that all persons who operate machinery or assist with machining receive adequate training. Daltons Wadkin provide inhouse and site-based

training for novice learners, experienced operators and supervisors covering woodworking machinery, abrasive wheels and portable power tools. All of the company’s trainers are time-served machinists qualified for effective teaching and assessment. As a PIABC quality-assured centre, companies can be assured to receive the very highest standards of training. FIRA International unveils new look and investment programme FIRA International has unveiled its new brand identity, following the acquisition of the business by Element Materials Technology (Element) last year. This announcement coincides with significant investment into furniture testing capacity within FIRA International’s UKASaccredited facilities in Stevenage. The new look for FIRA International now complements that of the wider Element business, bringing the organisation closer to its parent company identity. Commenting on the rebrand, Phil Reynolds, general manager at FIRA International says: “Since the Element acquisition we’ve been working very closely behind the scenes to successfully integrate our business. It has been critical

FP303.indd 4

for us to do this in a way that enables FIRA International to benefit from further investment to ensure that we continue to be in a position to meet the needs of all our customers, whether this be for furniture testing, consultancy or inspection and repair services.

“We’re very excited about the new look for FIRA International and, more importantly, the benefits it will bring to our customers. The more distinctive look will also help us to differentiate between the Furniture Industry Research Association (FIRA) and FIRA International.

“Within the testing business, last month we opened our newly-expanded flammability laboratory, which has doubled our capacity. Previous to this, additional equipment was installed for structural testing and further expansion in this area will continue into 2019.

FIRA will retain their current purple branding and logo, and FIRA International will continue to be the service provider to the research association.” FIRA International’s product and installation certification programme, FIRA Gold, also has a new look, while the technical

requirements of the scheme remain unchanged. The same applies to the FIRA Ergonomics Excellence Award, which has also undergone a refresh. FIRA International also confirmed that the introduction of its new brand identity does not affect the validity of existing test reports, assessments or certificates previously issued, and customers can continue to use these documents as before. Anyone from across the furniture industry who wishes to see first-hand the new look at FIRA International and the results of the expansion programme, is invited to attend the open day being held at the UKAS-accredited facilities in Hertfordshire on 21st February. www.fira.co.uk/training

6 News Gowercroft MD takes on key industry role

Andrew Madge, MD of Gowercroft Joinery has been appointed to the Executive Board of the British Woodworking Federation (BWF). The appointment of Andrew comes after two years of working within the British Woodworking Federation Council, which allows member organisations to guide the future direction and work of the BWF. During that time he has been instrumental in raising the profile of the woodworking sector and highlighting how it can support the construction economy.

Leitz Tooling’s Brian Maddox celebrates 40-year service Leitz Tooling’s national sales manager Brian Maddox has celebrated his 40th year with the company. In reaching this almost unheard-of milestone, Leitz Tooling UK and Brian have shared an ethos of care, attention and drive which is seldom found elsewhere. Simon Liddell, Leitz Tooling UK’s managing director says: “Brian is passionate about his work and is driven to bring smooth and efficient productivity and maximum profitability to as many companies as he can. He is genuinely inspiring, and his charity efforts are not only humbling, but physically exhausting to watch!” Anyone who knows Brian, knows he doesn’t do anything by halves. This means that we’re not talking 24 hours in a comfy bath of baked beans. Brian has been the driving force behind Team Leitz’s fantastic Three Peaks Challenge achievement, has trained hard for – and survived – the London Marathon, and most recently led a team from Leitz in the gruelling 100km Race To The Stones. Brian has raised tens of thousands of pounds for local

causes, including Haven House Children’s Hospice for life-limited children and their families. Brian began his career in the sales office of the Tottenhambased company C D Monninger in 1978; formed in 1867, C D Monninger is the oldest British woodworking saw and tooling company. In the 1960s, Leitz appointed C D Monninger as Leitz’s sole UK agent and strengthened this relationship in 1982 by acquiring C D Monninger to expand its European sales and service organisation. Brian stayed in sales and advanced to national sales manager for Leitz UK in 1990 when the company moved from Tottenham to its current purposebuilt site in Harlow. Harlow today is Leitz UK’s headquarters and one of the largest diamond tool sharpening centres in the UK. Brian says: “Helping others in work or life is a privilege. Whether you care about the orang-utans, the environment or the kids in our world, it is just fantastic when you get to do your part, or sometimes insane things, to make what difference you can. A couple of

years ago a few of us from Leitz were invited to Haven House Children’s Hospice to see the work they do. “I could not contemplate what these poor children go through and the effect their illnesses have on their families, but our visit was eye-opening; Haven House is a truly wonderful place. The kind nature of everyone, the support they give to children during their short lives and the families, is unbelievably positive.” Congratulations Brian, cheers to 40 years!

Tailor-made finance solution for a bespoke business Woodworking and joinery remain an essential part of the UK manufacturing industry, representing nearly £4 billion spread across 5070 firms, ranging from small family businesses to large corporations. Operating throughout the UK, they provide genuine employment opportunities in all parts of the UK that are often areas of high unemployment. Close Brothers Asset Finance’s team of woodworking specialists has for many years provided tailor-made finance packages and Refinance by way of Sale and HP Back to firms that needed an affordable way to spread the cost of the assets they need to help their business succeed. One such business is West & Reid, a London-based furniture and cabinetmaker, which Close Bros helped to enhance its bespoke interior design offerings to customers. With over 20 years’ experience

FP303.indd 6

between them, craftsmen and designers Malcolm Weir and Tom Jarvis established West & Reid to manufacture bespoke kitchens and residential interiors. “To move the business forward, Malcolm and Tom wanted to increase capacity and offer their customers the latest technology, which would help them produce

outstanding quality kitchens and enhance their offering,” explained Richard Randall, area sales manager, Close Brothers Asset Finance. “Investing in a new SCM Morbidelli N100 CNC router would help them to achieve this.” After contacting the asset manufacturer – SCM Group – with their requirements, they were

advised to contact Richard, who adds: “Because this was a large purchase, getting finance arranged was critical. “I met with Malcolm and Tom within a few days of the initial contact to assess their requirements, shortly after which I proposed a hire purchase agreement, which in turn was underwritten in less than 48 hours. I also offered them a VAT deferral because the arrival of the machine did not coincide with the end of West & Reid’s VAT quarter.” This VAT deferral aided West & Reid’s cash flow while they waited for the VAT to be reclaimed. Malcom Weir comments: “Thanks to Richard and the team at Close Brothers, the quick set up of finance meant we could purchase the SCM machinery and move West & Reid forward with its future plans.” 01244 457 569 www.closeasset.co.uk/ woodworking

Biesse Group celebrates 50 years with an irrepressible focus on the future In 1969, Biesse machines revolutionised the furniture market, with solutions that served to set new technological standards in the industry. In just a few years, the company became an integral component and driving force within the Italian furniture district, conquering the entire national territory. Then, in 1989, the opening of the company’s first foreign subsidiary marked the beginning of an intensive process of internationalisation, which helped to establish the brand worldwide. A journey marked by ambitious decisions, partnerships and investments in research, which enabled the company to create cutting-edge machinery, not only within the wood sector, but also for processing glass, stone, technological materials and metal, along with high-tech products designed by the Group’s mechatronics division and machining tools. A history built upon the genius and vision of founder Giancarlo Selci, which is now being carried forward by Roberto Selci, the CEO of the group, who has succeeded in strengthening this pocketsized multi-national, surrounding himself with strategic skills and

FP303.indd 8

expertise, thus increasing both the knowledge and technology within the company. Today, Biesse is an international group – a company that knows how to speak to the world. Biesse is profoundly aware of the fact that technology is innovation, and that in turn, innovation is only truly possible if we remain focused on the future, and on what we can create, and even before that, what we can conceive and imagine. Biesse Group is 50 this year, and is celebrating by touring the world with a programme of events dedicated to its customers, with a single common denominator: looking towards our future. Believing in the future also means channelling significant investment into producing tools and machines that can provide our

customers with greater production efficiency, simplifying their work whilst ensuring the highest levels of safety, and improving the interaction between mechanical, electronic and software elements, making the products created by the Group both intelligent and collaborative. The first step on the path which leads into the future was taken by Biesse when the Group decided to focus on creating digital factories tailored to each individual customer, from the smallest artisan producers to the biggest businesses. In investing in an IOT project, we are allowing ourselves to be guided by the new rules of the Industry 4.0. The company has decided to dedicate its 50 year anniversary celebrations to the future, through a programme of activities which

“Innovation lies in details, and in careful attention to detail. It calls upon us to open our eyes and our horizons, diminishing obstacles and transforming them into opportunities, making each and every goal real. It is a switch that we can use to kindle curiosity and knowledge, creating the future.” Giancarlo Selci, founder of Biesse Group

will be rolled out throughout 2019, the details of which will be clarified over the course of the year. More specifically, ‘Future in Tour’ will launch in January, a programme of celebratory events to mark the company’s birthday with our customers throughout the world, beginning in Pesaro in January at the Biesse Group Headquarters and ending in Russia in December 2019, after a total of 18 events in 15 countries. The programme also includes three grand openings to inaugurate new campus sites in various locations across the globe, as well as a very special edition of Ligna 2019. “The contribution that our people have made to the business over all these years is a central theme. It is their work and their knowledge that has helped Biesse enjoy such great success globally. Accordingly, it is crucial that we listen to everyone, focusing on engaging and motivating each and every employee, from our manual workers to the executive director. “Everyone must focus on doing what they are best at, and we must help each other to continue to grow and improve. And we can only do this well if we do it together,” he concluded. www.biesse.com

Composites are opening up new horizons for the furniture industry What does the furniture market look like and what potential composites offer for the furniture of today and tomorrow? The Aachen Center for Integrative Lightweight Production (AZL) is investigating this question together with companies from the composite and furniture industry. The result will be an overview of the current market and the materials used to date as well as an outlook on future mass applications for fibre-reinforced plastics (FRP). The study is open to interested companies and started with a kick-off meeting at Composites Europe in Stuttgart in November last year. Furniture, its design and function have undergone major changes in recent decades: From robust lifelong companions to trendsetting models, from handmade one-of-a-kind pieces to mass products, from storage objects to multi-functional and smart all-rounders. This goes along with an increased diversity in terms of design and the materials used – and high potential for composites that offer additional design freedom and exceptional mechanical properties at low weight. Study provides overview of furniture market and USPs of composites In order to systematically identify the potential of fibre-reinforced composites and to use them in future furniture applications, the AZL is starting a study together with companies from the furniture and composite industry. Within four-and-a-half months the market for furniture will be segmented, design and technology trends will be identified and the technical requirements for furniture and furniture components will be broken down to identify applications with high potential for composites. The overall goal is to understand the selection process and needs of the furniture designer in order to bring composites to the market as a targeted alternative to conventional materials. Virginia Bozsak, technical manager composites at Arkema Innovative Chemistry is participating in the study: “The ever-growing

For fast changing markets such as the furniture market, these materials also need to offer an enormous freedom of design. “Arkema already answers this demand with the only liquid thermoplastic resin Elium® used as a thermoset resin to produce composite structural or aesthetical parts. With the joint study, we aim

to identify specific applications in the furniture market to make use of material which is not limiting creativity or design specifications but rather enabling the future to be revolutionised.” More than 15 companies are participating in the study. Material manufacturers and suppliers of FRP technologies benefit from a market overview including potential applications and through contact with the end customer. Furniture designers and furniture manufacturers for their part get to know composite materials and technologies including their design possibilities in order to expand their portfolio. www.azl.rwth-aachen.de www.lightweight-production.com

Renolit’s sounds of colour We experience the world around us with all of our senses, often we see and hear simultaneously. With sound and visible light wavelengths being emitted from different ranges of the electromagnetic spectrum, this year Renolit’s colour trending department has used the connection between audio and visual to present new Colour Road colours that you can perceive or hear even with your eyes closed. These acoustic inspirations express the spirit of the age; they are connected to our emotions and their associated colour concepts. A selection from Renolit’s wide décor range shows the interplay of trending colours with current woodgrain designs, matt, high-gloss, and textured finishes. Noises of Life In the first trend topic, Noises of Life Introduces a world of colours synonymous with everyday life, sparks flying around the sound of machinery Kendall Oak wave blue

on steel, of technology, engineering and craftsmanship – sounds we often associate with precision. It brings to life a world of colours with subtle shades of grey and brown, such as pearl grey, deep cement grey, simmering tin plate and grained brown leather. In interiors, medium brown woods become relevant as well as a hint of concrete. Voices of Music In Voices of Music the attention turns to sounds that are intentionally created, which provide an emotional balance to our often hectic lives. For many people, music forms a connection with our inner selves, providing a gateway to experiencing ourselves in our entirety. Even just the first note of a recognised tune transports us to another place, conjuring images from our memory, making emotional connections between sight and sound. Colours full of spirit set the tone in this second trend

topic which introduces a powerful orange, an emotional dark red, a vibrating violet and a metallic bronze shade. Echoes of Nature Echoes of Nature combines trending colours that originate from nature and enrich our lives; bright shades of sunny yellow, the matt green of conifers, a deep ocean blue and the brilliant shades of the Northern Lights. These rich colours of nature once again offer fashion designers wealth of inspiration to draw from. Colour Road is Renolit’s colour and design trend service. To keep up with this rapidly changing style world, its Colour Road visual shows directions of trends for the future. Working in close co-operation with colour designers and trend institutes all around the world, the trend experts at Renolit monitor global developments and define the most important future colour codes for all sorts of application areas. SCM’s Smart&Human Factory is here The open house event of one of the world leaders in the field of secondary woodworking technologies will be held in Rimini from 31st January to 2nd February 2019. The spotlight will be on highly flexible and modular automation systems and man-robot interaction systems A cutting-edge production model, with digital and automation systems capable of ensuring advanced man-machine interaction and full control over the entire production flow. Automation through integrated robotics will be the focus of the Smart&Human Factory event to be held from 31st January to 2nd February 2019 at the Technology Centre of the SCM headquarters, in Rimini. A leading producer of secondary woodworking machinery, SCM will host an exclusive presentation of its new systems – flexible, modular and easily reconfigurable, designed to provide an increasingly effective, quick response to the challenges of mass customisation. Humans and robots, together The open house summarises the goal of the new SCM product range: to supply the most user-friendly automation technology which, as well as considerably streamlining the factory layout, making it more efficient, also creates a new model of interaction among humans, robots and machines, according to an open, safe cells design. All this with the option to reconfigure the production process whenever this is necessary, to quickly process increasingly smaller order to production batches. A new smart and human factory –also makes progress in terms of work flow: risky and repetitive human tasks are minimised and operators are able to focus on higher added value tasks. SCM offers its customers a wide range of solutions. • Flexible cells served by industrial anthropomorphic robots for repetitive and low added value tasks. An ideal solution for sawblade cutting or sawing, milling, drilling and edgebanding or for workpiece sequence rearranging between one process phase and the next; • Collaborative Islands, in which humans and collaborative robots (cobots) work side by side, sharing the available work space safely, without the need for enclosures or similar systems. The cobots are used in the final process stages, such as assembly, hardware insertion, glue dispensing and surface finishing; • Flexible interconnections of machining cells and assembly islands through AMR – Autonomous Mobile Robots – for just-intime and just-in-sequence management and optimisation of all process logistics flows. This is a leap forward compared to the traditional self-driving vehicles of the past: in

FP303.indd 14

SCM division director, Luigi De Vito

this case, no artificial references such as tapes or reflectors are needed, because the AMRs are able to autonomously orient themselves in space – identifying the surrounding environment and selecting the most efficient route to their destination while safely avoiding obstacles, including human ones. This enhances returns on investment and route reconfiguration flexibility, in line with process modularity requirements – in addition to streamlining maintenance tasks;

• Master Watch Supervision software to manage and monitor the state of each product being machined throughout the process. Panel cutting, edgebanding and drilling phases are thus optimised to obtain the same results as in standard production processes. Orders are then put back together at the end of the process, delaying customisation until this stage. This avoids huge quantities of logistically scattered items and helps minimise waste and rejects; • IoT: the innovative Maestro connect platform makes the most of the Internet of Things concept potential. A data collection and analysis system based on SCM technologies, it ensures, on the one hand, full control over the production flow and, on the other, the implementation of smart and predictive maintenance models. Among the advantages granted by the system

are: increased productivity and decreased downtime, improved and continuous operating cost control, lower maintenance costs and the ability to monitor machine parameters and performance in real time, anywhere and at any time, so as to be able to always correct any malfunction in an increasingly timely manner (smart maintenance). “Our SCM open house,” explains the SCM division director, Luigi De Vito, “will be a chance to experience a new model of interaction between machines and industrial and collaborative robotics, ground-level logistic handling and software. Ours is a cutting-edge proposal, designed to solve all the critical issues arising from mass customisation as well as to effectively ensure operator workflow progress. “SCM will showcase the achievement of new frontiers in automation, without forgetting the human factor, as indicated by the title Smart & Human Factory. Our strength is being not just a supplier, but a partner – ready to support our customers in their business. “Our flexible and reconfigurable systems and Supervision Software are designed to revolutionise the entire production system, optimising the resources used and reducing waste, rejects and retooling requirements during product changeovers. “Moreover, plant shuttles allow for the most efficient management of all the processrelated logistic flows, eliminating low added value tasks required from the human staff, such as the need to recover all the pieces scattered throughout the factory. “The introduction of robotic automation also reduces human personnel requirements, in addition to greatly simplifying the work required from operators and relieving them of dangerous activities.” This SCM event will also be an opportunity to present the new nesting CNC machining centres – designed to combine high productivity and maximum versatility in shaped panel cutting. With a turnover of €700m, and with a doubledigit growth rate in the last year, SCM Group is a world leader in technologies for the processing of a wide range of materials: wood, plastic, glass, stone, metal, and composite materials, as well as industrial components. The group companies, operating throughout the world, are reliable partners of leading companies in various market sectors, including the furniture, construction, automotive, aerospace, ship-building and plastic processing industries. SCM Group co-ordinates, supports and develops a system of industrial excellence in three large, highly specialised production centres employing more than 3600 workers and operating in all five continents. www.scmgroup.com

interzum 2019 on course for success The bar has been set very high for interzum 2019. But having reached the end of the last early booking phase, Matthias Pollmann, Maik Fischer and their team expect the interzum success story to continue next year. “With the upcoming trade fair for the global industry, we will be able to offer another unique event. interzum will provide new inspiration for the industry because we identify the relevant topics and add strong emotional appeal to them. In combination with the continuing strong growth in exhibitor numbers, interzum has undergone further strategic development and is now more than ever the place to be,” says Matthias Pollmann, vice president trade fair Management at Koelnmesse. More than 1800 exhibitors are currently expected. That will mean that interzum has succeeded in increasing the number of exhibitors by around 300 companies in only two events. At the largest industry event worldwide, the most innovative products, new technological developments and innovations in materials are presented. In addition to global key players, the

FP303.indd 16

whole industry descends on Cologne to witness a whole host of product premieres – and to steal a glimpse of the future. Topics that are currently making waves in the industry include the digitalisation of products and production methods, efficiency enhancements, resource conservation and

sustainability, and tiny homes. interzum’s status as the world’s leading industry meeting place is repeatedly confirmed by the high percentage of first-time exhibitors. For 2019, Koelnmesse is expecting a high number of new exhibitors, and 14% of the companies that have already registered will be attending interzum for the first time. These include companies such as Abet Laminati, Multiprofil, Richter Akustik, Yildiz Entegre, lightweight solutions and Leggett & Platt’s Work Furniture Group. interzum is an opportunity for the supplier industry to reveal all its innovative power. What’s staying? What’s coming? At interzum you can find highly diverse answers to the market’s key questions in the products of the exhibitors. But the trade fair also delivers thematic inspiration through the piazzas, thereby generating stimuli for new ideas and discussion topics, making it a meeting point that invites networking. This year, the focus areas of the piazza concept include the topics Mobile Spaces, Hall 10.1, Surfaces & Wood Design, Hall 6; Disruptive Materials, Hall 4.2 ;Digitalisation, Hall 3.2; Digital Printing, Hall 3.2; and Tiny Spaces on the North Boulevard. www.interzum.com

Ligna’s supercharged 2019 event

The upcoming Ligna, which runs from May 27th to 31st, 2019, is not just a place for discovering the latest innovations, closing deals and networking – as well as its wealth of exhibits from around the world, the trade show features a large number of special showcases for all areas of the wood processing and woodworking industries.   Ligna.Forum Next year’s show marks the premiere of the Ligna.FORUM, a presentation forum in Hall 11 that will provide in-depth coverage of the key Ligna focus themes as well as topical issues relevant to the secondary processing sector. The latter include Processing of Plastics and Composites, Smart Surface Treatment and “Integrated Woodworking – Tailored Solutions as well as lectures and presentations from science and research. The Ligna.FORUM will also be the venue for the German Timber Construction Award prize-giving ceremony. Processing of plastics and composites Coverage of Processing of Plastics and Composites at this year’s show will not be confined to the Ligna.FORUM. At an information pavilion operated by the University of Stuttgart Institute for Machine Tools (IfW) in Hall 11, visitors can learn about woodworking machinery that cannot only process wood but also plastics, panel products, composite materials and insulation and building materials. For example, the pavilion will feature demonstrations showing the machining of additively manufactured parts. Scientific Research and Education Scientific Research and Education is a longstanding, popular presentation in Hall 11 where trade schools, polytechnics, technical colleges and universities present their latest R&D findings and projects and provide information on their education and training programmes. It has been a fixture at Ligna for many years and ideally complements the exhibition’s plant

FP303.indd 18

and machinery exhibits. Ligna.Campus Complementing the Scientific Research and Education showcase is the Ligna.Campus, which features the projects and findings of several research-focused institutions of higher learning. One of the projects on show, the proto-lab from Rosenheim University of Applied Sciences, is already attracting great interest. The proto-lab demonstrates the feasibility of an innovative human-machine processing system that can cater not only for high product variability but also greater product complexity. Visitors to the exhibit will learn about key future technologies, including cyber-physical assistance systems, such as collaborative robots, automated guided vehicles and smart worker support technologies. “Industry 4.0 is just the tip of the iceberg,” explains Dr Andreas Heinzmann from Rosenheim University’s Faculty of Wood Technology and Construction. “Ever-increasing market pressure to individualise and digitise means production has to be highly flexible. It also requires a complete re-think of production planning and management processes. “In our proto-lab, humans, machines, logistics processes and products all communicate and collaborate with each other in a direct, decentralised fashion. It’s about decentralising traditional management structures and reporting lines while ensuring the optimal, seamless integration of all parts of the value chain, starting with the initial product idea and continuing through development, production, use and maintenance right to the recycling stage. Ligna Training Workshops After last year’s successful debut, the Ligna Training Workshops for joiners, cabinetmakers, carpenters and mobile assemblers are returning to Ligna in 2019. The Ligna Training Workshops are an opportunity for exhibitors to give users an in-depth, hands-on experience of their

products. The event’s motto says it all: ‘Showing. Doing. Mastering.’ Organided by Deutsche Messe with the support of two German joinery industry associations and with GEWEMA AG as commercial partner, the Ligna Training Workshops will be located in the pavilion in front of Hall 11. Apart from the hands-on training sessions, the event also features a programme of lectures on technical matters of relevance to skilled tradespeople. Ligna Guided Tours As well as being a key event for all the latest technologies, Ligna is the ideal place to learn about the latest trends shaping the woodworking and timber processing industries – for instance, as a participant in one of the Ligna Guided Tours. This year’s tour themes include Integrated Woodworking Technologies – Tailored Solutions and 2019 newcomers Smart Surface Technologies and Sawmill Technology – Innovations and Trends. Integrated Woodworking Technologies – Tailored Solutions On this tour, participants will find out how machines ‘talk’ to one another and learn about the latest processing systems that enable product individualisation in both custom and mass production scenarios. They will also be able to see how robotics and automation technology can make their production more efficient. Smart Surface Technology This tour covers a wide range of surface treatment technologies and processes as well as scanning and quality assurance systems. It also provides insight into different finishing technologies, such as digital and 3D printing, and highlights new sustainable processing options, such as energy- and resource-efficient adhesives, liquid coating systems and inkjet applications. www.ligna.de

26 Installation Combi-WR4s and the first UK Combi-CBE4 for kitchen manufacturer.

Electric power and 4-way is best for Crown Imperial Since Crown Imperial was established as Crown Products in 1946, the company’s portfolio over the decades has included wooden toys, nursery furniture, contract furniture for the Government and even ice cream advertising stands. The family-run business now specialises in the manufacture of high quality British furniture for kitchens, bedrooms and living areas. It has a large showroom with 6000 products in Daventry, but its headquarters are in Herne Bay. This is where it has recently overhauled and enhanced handling procedures by bringing in a number of Combilift models to replace counterbalance and reach trucks that were previously used. The wide variety of raw materials and the varying dimensions of finished products that need to be moved around and stored at the 10,000m² production facility required versatile equipment, and store manager Bruce Whiting was also keen to reduce the level of ride-on forklift traffic, particularly in areas where a lot of other personnel are present. Taking advice from Jon Collett of materials handling consultant Mexmast, he looked at the Combilift range and found the ideal solution in the form of Combi-WR4 multidirectional pedestrian stackers and a Combi-CBE4 multidirectional counterbalance design forklift. Crown Imperial is the first company in the UK to take delivery of the new 4t capacity electric powered Combi-CB – which ticked all the boxes for Bruce. “We wanted a truck with a small footprint that could work in narrow confines, but we also needed enough capacity to cope

FP303.indd 26

with our heavier loads. Electric power was also essential for lower running costs, so we were pleased to hear that Combilift had recently added the CBE4 to its range.” The CBE4 is used across the site for a wide range of tasks; offloading 6m-long packs of timber, chipboard and MDF and taking them to racking, and handling long profiles and timber doors. It can also attach a tipping bin to the forks which is used to take chipping waste to the wood burner for recycling (which provides fuel for heating the facility). The compact size of the truck coupled with its 4-way ability enables it to easily manoeuvre the tipper between machinery in the main hall without affecting production schedules. The two Combi-WR4s, which have a capacity of 1450kg, tend to work inside, although they are equally at home outside if required. They handle lighter loads such as long profiles, pallets of components as well as the cardboard that is used for packaging. A major feature of all Combilift’s walk-behind trucks is the unique patented multi-position tiller arm which enables push button rotation of the rear wheel parallel to the chassis and back. This offers excellent visibility of the surroundings, the forks and the load, and when working in narrow aisles it enables the operator to stand at the side of the unit rather than the rear, avoiding any crush risk. The lower speed of pedestrian machines compared to ride-on trucks also fits neatly with Crown Imperial’s requirement for ultrasafe operation, particularly when manouevring around corners or potential blind spots. The versatility and 4-way capability of the

Combilifts have enabled better use of storage space for long products and have also brought further benefits, as Bruce points out: “Thanks to the Combi-WR4’s manouevrability in the small aisles of the warehouse area we can put stock where we couldn’t previously and can now store all elements of a customer order in one place. “With the old reach trucks we had to split orders and keep them in different locations. So it is now much quicker to locate a specific order, and if customers want to delay shipment there is no issue for us with lack of space.” “Our previous handling suppliers were not overly helpful to be honest,” says Bruce, “so we were very open to Jon’s fresh take on our operation and impressed with his suggestions and Mexmast’s service which have improved efficiency. He also recommended the blue spot safety light, which indicates the direction of travel of the Combi-CB to further reduce risks, as well as the Hoppecke trak® air rapid-charging battery system, so we can top up quickly in a break if we think we’re going to need extra power. And the drivers/operators love them – which is of course very important. “We pride ourselves on our advanced manufacturing equipment with which we can process timber and MDF at speeds of 30 panels a minute, or drill one million holes a day, and our handling equipment is now equally sophisticated. We are able to do things that were impossible before from a handling, storage and safety point of view and new possibilities for better utilisation of space and equipment keep occurring to us.” www.combilift.com

Installation 27 Based in a converted loom manufacturing mill in Colne, Lancashire, Simpsons is renowned for its premium furniture lovingly crafted using largely traditional machinery. But due to frustrating bottlenecks and consistency issues with its drilling operation, the company needed to find a dependable, and affordable solution.

CNC machine guarantees quality and consistency at Simpsons Established over 40 years ago, Simpsons is a highly-respected and trusted furniture designer and manufacturer with family values running throughout the business. Whether it is beautifully bespoke kitchens, bedrooms, bathrooms, studies, AV rooms or staircases, every piece of Simpsons’ furniture is lovingly crafted in its historic Lancashire mill. The foundation of the business is a creative, passionate and astute team, led by brothers Steve and Phil Simpson, who are dedicated to what they do and resourceful enough to get it done in a straight-forward manner, with no frills, no fuss and little ceremony. They are, however, totally very capable of delivering a premium product for its loyal and long-standing customer base in the Ribble Valley and beyond. Simpsons’ base is not the typical modern box found on trading estates across the UK, rather the pair took on an historic former textile mill building in 1990 and made it fit-for-purpose featuring a practical u-shaped manufacuring space fronted by offices, and on the lower ground floor, a stunning showroom featuring 15 impressive room-sets. Over the years, the Simpsons reputation has grown throughout Lancashire and further afield and it has become a prime source for those wanting beautifully-crafed bespoke furniture. The company’s kitchens and bedrooms adorn glossy magazines and together with their bathrooms and studies, are widely admired for their design, craftsmanship and sheer resourcefulness. The business began in 1977 making small pine products in a shed and over the next ten years moved into pine furniture. And even though it was bread bins and toiler roll holders to start with, the ideaology was always to produce the best quality products they could – products that are humble can have finesse. As so it was when the young business moved into pine furniture, not the typical Ducal-style pine furniture, Steve and Phil chose to reproduce antique-style furniture which had genuine aesthetic appeal. The couple went to the lengths of sourcing old stripping bath residue to finish their products with a warm and aged look – it was this kind of attention to detail that began to set Simpsons apart for the norm. The business really kicked into gear in the early 1990s when Simpson’s started producing freestanding kitchen furniture and also making fitted kitchens, bathrooms and bedroom furniture for a more demanding clientele in the local area. If the company was to describe its signature

FP303.indd 27

Simpsons beautiful kitchens are typically in the £50,000-plus region

style, the current vogue for the classic painted look with a contemporary feel using high quality, timeless materials is one of its most successful looks. Today’s customers still mostly come from the local area, and are able to spend £50,000plus on a project, which Simpson’s can manage from intital design ideas through to a complete interior renovation project. Of course, there is no such thing as a typical £50k kitchen, more often than not, there is considerable bespoke work involved, and the quality which underpinned the business in the early days is even more important when the clients’ investment is so significant.

As the business evolved, Simpsons has carefully, and strategically unpgraded its production capability to meet its needs – its Altendorf saw has run for twenty-plus years and its second-hand Wadkin moulder has done 30plus years. So whereas the finished product may appear incredibly sophisticated, the production floor is more of a large, tradtional workshop which full of straightfoward, unsophisticated classical machinery complemented with wellhoned hand-crafting techniques. Ross Whittam, the company’s production manager, is responsible for Simpsons’ industrious workshop with a team of

long-serving skilled craftsmen and a raft and traditional machinery and equipment. In recent years, as the company’s furniture has become more sophisticated featuring a greater use of built-in technology and functionality, finding new ways to adapt and improve the production process to keep delivering outstanding results has become more of a challenge. Ross and the team continue to look for ways to improve capability in the company’s production process, and one bottleneck which was beginning to create knock-on issues was the drilling of the carcass panels and other components. Not only had throughput long-since been an issue, the increasingly complex drilling patterns, accuracy and consistency had now exacerbated the problem. Ross felt the company needed an entrylevel CNC solution for fast, consistent drilling. Discussing it with Steve, they agreed to search for a simple drilling and grooving solution – but were not initially looking at a CNC option. Steve contacted Carl O’Meara from the respected Oswestry machinery dealer, J & C O’Meara, who had previously supplied Simpsons with its Altendorf saw and other traditional machines.

Simpsons’ organised traditional manufacturing process

“We could see the problem, that was easy,” explained Steve. “and we just wanted to get something cost-effective that could drill and groove the carcasses acccurately – doing this manually it could take up to an hour to drill, far too time consuming, and it was becoming a massive bottleneck for us. “Talking with Carl, we initially wanted to look for a simple drilling machine, but he suggested we look at one of his new Sirius CNC boring machines with a router head and automatic tool changer. “When we discovered that this machine could do what we needed in five minutes that would normally take an hour, we could see that this would be a very rational and worthwhile investment for the business. A deciding factor for Simspons came after it had to create a substantial, highly detailed fitted library project for one of its clients. “It was lovely library project, but really I can’t think of the amount of bloody holes we drilled in that thing, it must have been thousands, literally thousands,” explained Steve. “We were pulling our hair out, I kept asking the guys day after day ‘is it done yet? The two of you, have been on this for three or four days, and it’s still not done,’ It was crazy!” This realisation that it would have had it done in a morning if they owned a Sirius machine

convinced Steve that getting this machine in was the right thing to do. The deal was done. After a smooth installation, the training took an initial day with Ross quickly getting to get to grips with the basics of the machine. “The set-up was simple and we were easily up and running with support from Carl and his team,” explained Ross. “Also the TeamViewer function gave us direct access to experts in Turkey – where the machine is manufactured – who were able to see what were doing and offer practical advice in real time – we even used WhatsApp as well! “After a week or so we had mastered what we needed to do an a regular basis and now we’re beginning to explore the full potential of the machine.” Steve also made the point that the new machine has allowed the company’s designers to be less wary of some of the work they may have previously given a wide berth to because of its complexity and difficulty or simply too expensive to process using traditional techniques. Now, a lot of the complicated and detailed work can readily be achieved meaning a much greater design freedom than was possible before. The Sirius CNC 950M boring machine with a router head and automatic tool changer has a

“When we discovered that this machine could do what we needed in five minutes that would normally take an hour, we could see that this would be a very rational and worthwhile investment for the business” heavy duty construction – weighing almost 1.5 tons – and this is ideal because it allows the X and Y axis to move quickly without effort at speeds of up to 70m/min. It has a generous 950mm working width meaning large panels can be loaded accurately being held firmly in place by the pneumatic gripper and moved through the machine easily thanks to the air floatation tables. It also features a router head and automatic tool changer and is equipped with 10 vertical drills which drill from below to ensure the working surface and all holes are kept dust free whilst also having the benefit of increased accuracy as the drilling depth will always be correct despite any tolerances in the thickness of the work piece. The machine is also equipped with horizontal drilling to all four sides and a grooving saw in the X axis. The machine has a large, easy to use, industrial-based 17in colour windows based PC with both USB and remote file transfer. With the addition of the router head, numerous repetitive and detailed tasks can be easily resolved such as grooving for solid backs on carcasses, routing out for cable management, pipes or skirtings, shaping for corner units for instance.

FP303.indd 29

It comes fitted with a six position automatic tool changer to the router head which manifestly expands the list of possibilities for this machine. For Simpsons, the additional functionality was a bonus: “The focus of what we needed sorting was the carcass drilling, the fact that it did all these other things as well was a bonus really,” explains Ross. As an example, Simpsons is well known for its curved work with smooth corners, arches and a rounded details – the Sirius is being used to create highly accurate jigs to make this type of work more accessible and repeatable. Previously, jobs like this were very timeconsuming, made hand, or even subbed out to other companies. Now, with the Sirius, it’s a straightforward process. Having introduced the new Sirius machine, Ross concluded: “With the new machine, we have improved manufacturing standards and consistency, reduced machining errors to practically zero, and our throughout is perfect from the point of view of drilling. Thanks to the Sirius machine, and Carl and his team, Simpson’s now has a far more professinal and reliable production system – we’re delighted!” 01704 893109 www.ukwoodworkingmachinery.co.uk www.simpsonsfurniture.co.uk

30 Installation A special software application enables a cabinet and door manufacturer to load its Cabinet Vision Screen-ToMachine files into Alphacam for nesting.

Summerbridge links Cabinet Vision and Alphacam with special software application The production process also involves another standalone macro written by Cabinet Vision engineers, which merges two CSV files – one containing drawing information, and one with secondary operations – which are then imported into Alphacam for cutting. Summerbridge Doors produces a range of cabinets and cabinet doors, principally for kitchens, bedrooms, bathrooms and studios, along with the static leisure home industry and housebuilders. Now operating with around 120 employees at its factory in Hull, the company has supplied vinyl-wrapped cabinet doors for 25 years, and expanded into full cabinet production in 2012. It also offers a sub contract service, creating doors and cabinets for design companies that don’t have their own manufacturing facilities. In total, several thousand cabinet panels a week come out of its Cabinet Vision design and Screen-To-Machine programme, and are imported into Alphacam for nesting on Biesse Rover machine tools. Technical manager Nick Kersey explains that as its Winstore automatic loading system has a database of offcuts, as well as using full sheets, it needed a special application to nest products designed in Cabinet Vision onto the offcuts. “We use a software add-on called GPA, which looks at the Winstore database to see what material is available.” Export files are created in Cabinet Vision, and the GPA system then produces Alphacam drawings and a CSV output, which is loaded into Alphacam for nesting.

FP303.indd 30

Summerbridge Doors’ Technical manager Nick Kersey says the overall integration between Cabinet Vision and Alphacam is seamless, producing accurate cabinets first time, every time.

“For example, when we’re working on a new job we’ll set up the room walls, drop in the required MFC cabinets and edit them to the exact specification. Then we define the materials, and include a job reference along with all the information that Alphacam needs. “Cabinet Vision’s Screen-To-Machine centre will then create two outputs – firstly, the Alphacam

drawings, including operations, and a CSV file containing all the information related to them. And the other output is for secondary operations such as end drilling for our Skipper machine. This will be in the form of CIX and CSV files. “It’s at this point that we use the macro to merge the two CSV files and import them into Alphacam.” All relevant paperwork, assembly

sheets and drawings are then printed from Cabinet Vision. The next step is to launch the GPA program in Alphacam, import the CSV file, and process it through nesting and cutting. He says the overall integration between Cabinet Vision and Alphacam is seamless, producing accurate cabinets first time, every time. Cabinet doors are manufactured from MDF and then wrapped in vinyl, or laminated with acrylic. Summerbridge has a standard range of around 40 designs and 90 colour variations, and are also asked to produce customised one-off orders. Production is handled entirely in Alphacam, giving capacity for the company to ship up to 25,000 doors a week. The process is made even faster with Alphacam’s Automation Manager, which enables files to be batch processed, from file preparation right through to applying toolpaths, with NC code generated automatically. In addition, Automation Manager can create a full report structure, along with labels and bar coding if required. In total, the company has 10 CNC machine tools driven by Alphacam and Cabinet Vision, including three three-axis SCM Ergons, each with two tables and an X-axis with two independent heads, a small point-to-point Biesse Skill, two Biesse Rovers, and a Skipper drilling machine. Two of the CNC machines form part of a manufacturing cell, which also includes a beam saw and the Winstore storage and loading system. Nick Kersey says it has used Alphacam to produce its doors for many years, and find its nesting function to be invaluable. “We’ve got a couple of experienced programmers using it, and others are now learning it, as well. Its ease of use for producing a 2D drawing and applying toolpaths works very well for us … the add-on packages are simple and robust, but for us, the nesting engine is key.” He says when it expanded into full cabinet production it assessed several software options, but Cabinet Vision was the only one that “ticked all the boxes” for a quick and easy way to meet its requirements. “We’ve continually invested in new technology and machinery, and as a result our delivery times are now between 5 and 10 days – among the best in the industry.” www.summerbridgedoors.co.uk www.cabinetvision.com www.alphacam.com

32 Installation Dust Control Systems Ltd (DCS) has designed and installed a complete dust extraction system for renowned Nottinghamshire-based furniture manufacturer, Andrew Paul Furniture Ltd.

DCS filter sits comfortably in Long Eaton Andrew Paul Furniture is located at the heart of the UK’s furniture-manufacturing capital – Long Eaton – and the company’s directors bring together a combined experience of over 60 years in the industry to manufacture traditional, quality furniture with a contemporary twist. Situated between Nottingham and Derby, just north of the River Trent, Long Eaton was once a thriving industrial town, manufacturing much of the Nottingham lace which was sold worldwide but, by the mid-1900s, the demand for lace had waned considerably. Fortunately for the town’s workforce, this decline coincided with the rise of furniture and upholstery manufacturing in the town; an industry which has continued to thrive in Long Eaton to the point where it is recognised today as the centre for quality upholstery manufacture in the UK. More than 50 companies in the town are involved in furniture manufacture, employing over 2700 people and generating sales in excess of £250 million through high end retailers in the UK and around the world. The statement Made in Long Eaton means a great deal when it comes to fine furniture, and the Union Jack Sofa logo may only be used by companies manufacturing within the town’s boundaries.

From the frames manufactured using FSCaccredited timber, through to the finished upholstered piece, virtually every element of the furniture created at Andrew Paul is produced inhouse and, when the directors took the decision to bring two separate manufacturing units under the same roof, they called DCS in to assess their dust extraction requirements. As DCS’s sales manager, Ray Townley, explains: “The joinery and frame-building side of the business was already located in premises next to the new factory, but upholstery work was being completed in a separate building up the road.” Ray carried out the free site survey and energyefficiency appraisal that DCS always offer, and the proposed turnkey package included the supply and installation of an externally-sited, NFSZ3000 3HJLR screw filter unit to handle dust and waste from the company’s eclectic mix of classical saws and sanders, as well as a lathe, a thicknesser, and a surface planer. In total, extraction was required for six cleanup hoses and 19 different machines, including a new Schuko Hogger wood shredder, that DCS would also supply, which incorporates a magnetic trap at the outlet side to remove any metal waste; preventing potential damage to

the filter unit, and reducing the risk of fire by minimising the possibility of a spark occurring. The new system installed at Andrew Paul Furniture is enhanced by the inclusion of Ecogate energy-saving technology. Two Ecogate GreenBOX 12 units receive information on the operational status of each piece of equipment in the factory and, as machines are switched on and off, instruct a total of 21 Ecogate automatic dampers to open or close according to the realtime demand for extraction. The system then automatically adjusts the speed of the 37kW extraction fan to optimise efficiency and maximise power savings. “The Ecogate system is perfect for a joinery workshop such as this one,” says Ray, “where multiple machines are required for the manufacturing process, but never required to be in operation at the same time.” A conventional system would have the main fan and filter unit sized to accommodate the extraction requirement for all machines operating continuously throughout the working day. But, through analysis of machine usage, Kieran Redmond, projects engineer at DCS, determined the total maximum usage would only ever be around 85% of this total and, as Ray explains: “Ecogate technology takes advantage

Located in former railway buildings, Andrew Paul Furniture’s joinery shop now houses a fine collection of classical machinery

FP303.indd 32

33 of this fact; firstly allowing the installation of a lower powered fan to instantly reduce the company’s power consumption, and then by creating the potential for further significant savings by continually adjusting fan speed throughout the day to exactly match the changing extraction requirements.” “As well as ensuring the installation was economically efficient, we were keen to improve our green credentials,” says director Andrew Cooke, “and so we were also having a wood burner installed which would be fed with wood waste stored in the adjacent silo.” A rotary valve discharges collected waste, pressure-free, from the DCS filter unit and a 15kW transport fan directs the waste vertically into a cyclone separator; finally delivering the waste material efficiently and safely into the storage silo. DCS fitted heavy duty ductwork bends to enhance wear resistance, and return air ductwork is also included in the installation; manually-operated summer/winter dampers allow the filtered warm air to heat the workshop in winter, or divert it to atmosphere in summer. The whole installation was planned to accommodate Andrew Paul Furniture’s perpetually busy production schedule and to achieve this with the minimum possible down time. “The DCS engineering and installation team did an outstanding job”, commented Andrew. “Somehow they managed to work around us for the most part and the whole project progressed very smoothly.” 0800 040 7116 www.dcslimited.co.uk

34 Installation Seamers Specialist Joinery has acquired a new Wadkin Bursgreen M623S six-head planer-moulder for its new workshop in Derby to speed up the production process in a safe way.

Seamers Specialist Joinery Ltd trusts in AMS to produce its intricate mouldings Based in Derby, Seamers Specialist Joinery was founded in 1875. A family run joinery business, Seamers ensures its customers receive beautiful bespoke joinery manufactured by a highly skilled workforce, utilising a wide range of specialist equipment along with a professional service, Seamers Sprecialist Joinery’s first contact with Skeffington-based Advanced Machinery Services (AMS) was in December 2016 when it visited the AMS showroom in Skeffington for a demonstration of a Wadkin Bursgreen M623S planer-moulder. Sprecialist Joinery’s had already had a really positive experience with AMS, where it tried the machine and were impressed with the quantity of the machines on display. Leigh Freestone, Seamers’ workshop foreman, says: “We bought this machine because we needed a trusted and reliable planer-moulder in our new workshop to make our classical and intricate mouldings. Before we got our Wadkin Bursgreen six-head planer-moulder, we used to work with different machines to get the same result, but it took longer and was riskier! Now, with this new machine, we can be sure that every single moulding coming from this machine will be the same.” In addition to obtaining the Wadkin Bursgreen planer-moulder from AMS, Seamers Specialist Joinery received full training on the machine, in its factory from an AMS instructor. Leigh says: “With the training that we received from AMS, it was very easy to understand the machine and start to work with it. We also appreciate that when we do have any questions, we can call AMS, and get their help straight away.” Regarding the planer-moulder, AMS has a large range of machines available at its impressive Skeffington showroom for many different types of factories and workshops.

At Seamers Specialist Ioinery, they use the Wadkin Bursgreen six-head planermoulder to produce mouldings, window components, door components and much more. AMS was originally a service company that sells machines, and Leigh agrees:

Design to manufacture in a 3D modelling environment The process of designing in TopSolid’Wood is to automatically build manufacturing technology into the individual parts and assemblies by adopting the design to build approach, therefore, saving time and errors between the drawing office and the workshop. Offering unlimited creativity, TopSolid’Wood is a system that provides the flexibility and parametric capability to design any component or assembly in a friendly 3D environment: automatically generating production documentation that lists hardware, material requirements and assembly documentation. Designs are based on the fittings of the largest manufacturers (including Blum, Hettich) and personalised libraries of parametric hardware and components, such as furniture and subassemblies.

TopSolid’Wood offers flexible and parametric design capability in a 3D environment and there are no restrictions on materials, shapes and technologies during design. Using TopSolid’Wood, any change in the 3D model can result in the automatic updating of the 2D documentation and CNC programs. TopSolid’Wood also automatically generate production and assembly documentation which includes hardware and material requirements lists. TopSolid’Wood features advanced rendering via Redway and it collaborates with other CAD systems and has the ability to exchange data in both 2D and 3D formats, DXF, DWG, STEP, IGES and others. It also allows BIM IFC Import/Export and the ability to control machining centres from two to five axes.

3D CAD for both mass production and custom joinery and furniture TopSolid’Wood allows users to produce complex projects with no restrictions on shapes or technologies. It also allows users to quickly create complex projects with a number of different design functions such as 2D sketch, free formations, and library items with related machining information There is a box construction wizard (free form), a connector wizard (moulding, cam and dowels, screws, mortise and tenon, lamellas), an edge creator, and it allows users to define multilayered elements (veneer board, veneers, edges). It also facilitates the preparation of photorealistic renderings of designs with the Redway 3D module. TopSolid’Wood can output DXF format files to other CAD/CAM systems and directly into the machine interface of the leading machine suppliers such as SCM/Xilog/Maestro, Homag/ WoodWop and BiesseWorks/BSolid. Programming of CNC machine tools TopSolid’Wood, combined with the TopSolid’WoodCAM machining module, allows users to control CNC machines from leading machine suppliers This combination offers complete CAD/ CAM integration– the model is analysed and automated processes are performed, such as milling, drilling, pocketing, control of aggregates, saw cutting; and also control of 2.5D centres for milling, drilling, control of aggregates, suction heads and saw cutting. In this iteration, the CAD/CAM software provides three-axis fluid routing for sculpting and free-form machining. It also offers indexing routing of rotary axes, for drilling and milling on bevelled edges, at any angle. It is ideal too for complex machining in four and five continuous axis mode. During 3D machine simulation, the tool path can be viewed and checked. Tool collisions are also highlighted and the nesting of components for optimum use of boards also features. 07985 425739 cncsoftwaresolutions.co.uk

AXYZ router keeps Irish eyes smiling Installation of an AXYZ 6000 series CNC router at Dublin-based Assembly Craft has, according to the company’s founder and managing director, Clem Kelly, “led to a huge increase in production, faster turnaround on projects and an expanded customer base.” Established in 2004, Assembly Craft’s primary business is in the design and manufacture of bespoke furniture for the commercial and domestic sectors. This includes reception desks, counter and retail display units for the former and customised kitchens and bathrooms, wardrobes and shelving for the latter, all of which involve daily use of the AXYZ 6010 router supplied by AXYZ International. The materials processed include both solid woods and particle woods such as medium-density fibreboard (MDF), high-pressure laminates (HPL), acrylic, ABS, aluminium sheet, aluminium composites and foamed board. Responsible for project management at Assembly Craft,

The AXYZ 6010 router seen in operation at Assembly Craft

Marcus O’Shea comments: “The AXYZ router has surpassed all our expectations by dramatically increasing production levels and allowing diversification into new markets. It has also enabled us to offer a turnkey CNC routing/cutting service to other companies, thereby creating a valuable additional revenue stream.” The AXYZ 6010 router installed has a processing area of 3048 (length) x 2159mm (width). It also incorporates the AXYZ Automatic

Tool Change (ATC) facility for work involving multiple tools. The router is supported by VCarve design and production software developed by Vectric which Marcus O’Shea describes as “the best and most user-friendly software program the company has ever used, offering multiple tooling and both 2D and 3D machining options.” As with all AXYZ routers, the 6000 series can be supplied with a range of optional machining enhancements. These include the

AXYZ Zone Management facility that provides optimum material hold-down efficiency, the advanced A2MC machine controller and integrated AVS (AXYZ Vision System) for perfect routing/cutting accuracy and the latest helical rack and pinion drive system. This latter facility features a multiple gear teeth configuration that helps spread the workload more evenly, resulting in faster throughput speeds, reduced material wastage and machine wear and ultimately a longer than normal machine life. In conclusion, Clem Kelly comments: “Assembly Craft has over 20 years of experience in the design and manufacture of bespoke furniture and fittings as well as a wide range of associated products. Installation of the AXYZ 6010 CNC router has helped drive the business at a faster rate than would otherwise have been possible, in addition to helping develop new business opportunities.” www.axyz.co.uk

44 Adhesives

In conversation with Ian Kenyon The managing director of Kenyon Group tells Furniture & Joinery Production how his company has grown, starting life as a small family-run firm, developing into a major player in the UK adhesives sector. Tell us how Kenyon Group started … The original idea for Kenyon Group came from, strangely, a glue gun salesman who kick-started adhesives for ourselves back in early 1979. From this humble beginning, we have never looked back and we’ve now been supplying the woodworking, furniture, caravan, insulation, mattress, window, and door manufacturing markets for just shy of 40 years. In 2002, we became the largest distributor for National Starch & Chemical in the UK for adhesives within the woodworking and furniture markets and also the largest distributor for the Power Adhesives range of Tec glue guns and Tecbond glue sticks in the UK and sell to almost every marketplace. Every year the company has grown in strength and every day is a new and exciting adventure. Talking about adventures and challenges, last Christmas, for example, we were contacted by a customer who had imported over a million Christmas decorations where the robin had come unstuck in transit. They were panicking as they needed to get these in shops ready to sell straight away. “Don’t panic,” I said, “we are the glue experts,” and we solved the problem and made the customer happy – even though over a million robins had to be stuck by hand! But this is what it’s like working with Kenyon Group, we’re not some soulless retailer. We have retained and still operate under family values.

FP303.indd 44

You are not a number here, you are part of the family, and we will solve problems together with a personal touch. Where are you based? We have three warehouses across Oldham with the last premises acquired in 2015. We affectionately call these buildings K1, K2, & K3. K4 is also on the way as more land has been acquired at K1. Finally, we have also submitted planning for K3 to give it an extension. This would allow the warehouse to store an additional

120 IBC bulk containers or equivalent. Oldham is a fantastic place to be – despite the area getting some bad press over the years. Ideally connected, the people of Oldham are fantastic, hardworking individuals. Whether this stems back to the tough days of the cotton mills and clogs or simply a good work ethic that passed from generation to the next, there’s never a shortage of reliable people here. What sort of experience does your team have? Family values are important to us and this extends to all aspects of our culture. Take our sales office for example. You ring them and you get an answer. This is unlike ringing larger companies where you get passed from pillar to post before finally getting a response. This is very important to us as when customers have an issue or a new enquiry, being proactive is the key to winning that business, keeping it, or losing it! Then, we have the technical expertise. Our team here is surprisingly large for a company of our size – we have two field technical guys and three internal technical support team members. Again, you ring them, you get an answer. I mentioned we have been in business for around 40 years. During this time they’ve gained a wealth of knowledge allowing them to assist smaller users all the way up to multi-national companies – helping them with their adhesive requirements. The most important lesson we have gained

20/12/2018 12:03

45 from this time is the importance of product training. We either do this at our site in Oldham or at the manufacturers’ sites across Europe. Keeping up to date with market changes is essential in providing the high technical support that we pride ourselves on. We use the tagline ‘If you have an adhesion problem, don’t come unstuck – talk to the glue experts’. Needless to say, after solving some sticky applications, we have earned it. You’d be surprised at what we have been asked to bond! As for me, I have a background in engineering, chemistry, and paint technology. These are three technologies which allow me to assist the technical team with their day-to-day challenges. Can you tell us about your recent partnership with H.B. Fuller? Being appointed the sole UK distributor of H.B. Fuller’s Rakoll adhesive means a lot to us. It’s an honour that reflects our commitment to providing quality products for woodworking, furniture, caravan, insulation, mattress, window, and door manufacturers. As for the organisation itself, H.B. Fuller has been a leading global adhesives provider for 130 years. Focusing on perfecting adhesives through their 15 manufacturing sites across the globe, H.B. Fuller’s commitment to innovation is very compatible with our own family venues. They bring together people, products, and processes that answer and solve some of the world’s biggest adhesive challenges. This UK distribution deal should be very beneficial for both of us – and not just in terms of opportunity and growth. We plan to partner closely with H.B. Fuller to identify new applications and markets for their Rakoll line. For businesses, the implications are huge. H.B. Fuller is a major player in the adhesive world and this renewed venture into the UK means companies will have far more gluing options. As a result, we expect H.B. Fuller’s products to expand at an enormous rate, reaching a wider audience and opening new doors. To begin with, the emphasis in the UK will be woodworking and furniture adhesives but any

FP303.indd 45

company which uses glues for flat lamination, edgebanding, profile wrapping, and membrane press work should be very excited by the news! It’s an exciting time to be part of Kenyon Group, and we’re looking forward to seeing what the future holds. Right now, our prospects look very bright indeed. What else can you tell me about your activities and products in relation to the furniture and woodworking marketplace? Our range of adhesives covers a vast range of applications, markets, and substrates. We are challenged on a daily basis to find the answer to various adhesive problems and new applications. You will be amazed at what we have been asked to bond and the majority of the time we have surprised ourselves by providing the answer to some very difficult adhesive conundrums. Although we only currently supply adhesives, we’re moving forward with a range of support materials, such as edgebanding tapes, to complement the range. The thing about Kenyon Group is that there are no surprises and we ‘do what it says on the tin’. There is no single approach or product which is

‘best’. Every item we sell is manufactured to the highest quality standards and perfectly suited for the application in hand. Now, sometimes products exceed competitor grades. For example, Rakoll GXL 3 holds IMO certification (one of many H.B. Fuller adhesives we’re looking forward to distributing!) for marine applications. So, in essence, this is probably the best D3 water-resistance adhesive on the market! Alternatively, Rakoll GXL 4 keeps its characteristics and stability for the full shelf life (nine months) – unlike many other competitor grades available. Consequently, by partnering with H.B. Fuller, we’re now increasingly entering into sectors with proven technologies – delivering quality and performance. How can customers get hands-on with you? “To find out more about us, you can drop into our premises in Oldham, give us a ring on 0161 627 1001 or drop us an email at sales@kenyongroup.co.uk. “Oldham is ideally located for all local motorway connections making it easy to get to and equally easy for us to ship goods out.” 0161 627 1001 www.kenyon-group.co.uk

Getting to know Hranipex Hranipex was founded in 1993 by three people, Mr Zdenek Ryzner, his mother and father, who started the company in a small 6m2 garage in Jirice, Czech Republic. They decided to melt and cut large reels of edging into smaller ones, then sold these to small, local joiners and carpenters. The company grew quickly and after several years it moved to another facility in Humpolec and then onto Komorovice where it remains today. Today Hranipex has 12 branches in Europe and exports to 68 countries worldwide employing 500 staff and carrying over 2000 products. Today the warehouse is 38,000m² – 6000 times bigger than it was in 1993. Hranipex positions itself as a premium furniture edgebanding, adhesives, spraying and cleaning brand offering a full range of excellent products and a top quality service. The company believes that when customers hear the name Hranipex, they know they are working with a market leader in quality and customer service. Hranipex opened its UK branch in January 2012 and it has gone from strength to strength, starting out with just three people. In six years this has grown to a team of 20 covering the length and breadth of the UK and ROI. Stock items can be delivered next day when ordered before 5pm, and within three days from its Komorovice headquarters. Hranipex can also produce and slit items in many atypical dimensions and there is no minimum order quantity for these items. Most are delivered within seven days. Hranipex says its UK sales team guarantees that with its national coverage, it can readily meet and discuss customers’ individual needs, whether a one-off project or an ongoing service. The company says its experts can support with edges, adhesives and cleaners as well

to ensure the perfect finish to any piece of furniture. In 2019 Hranipex is launching its new Joint Optimisation Service where it visits customers’ sites and advises on the right adhesive to use for different machines. Hranipex says that too often users are using the wrong glue, storing it incorrectly or even running temperatures too high or low. By offering this service Hranipex says it can take the fear out of changing glues and cleaners. 0121 767 9180 www.hranipex.com

AkzoNobel passes testing industry standard with flying colours We all need quality in the modern environment and rigorous testing on products that we use in everyday life is part of both protecting us and developing a way forward that benefits both manufacturers and end users. At Blackburn-based AkzoNobel the company knows that an industry-recognised standard assessment which tests various common problems and challenges faced daily by its furniture lacquers is seen as more than crucial in determining quality and longevity. This includes the contract market, which has a tough benchmark and the domestic sector, which has a slightly less rigorous pass mark. In undergoing a Furniture Industry Research Association (FIRA) testing programme for a range of its products AkzoNobel can provide an unbiased, holistic and pragmatic set of results borne out of the desire to supply the highest quality of products at every opportunity. Established in 1949, the Furniture Industry Research Association is the UK’s largest furniture association and the only organisation that provides support to the whole furniture supply train, across all sectors. Its product and furniture testing provide reassurance for manufacturers and their customers, not only for meeting mandatory safety requirements, but as an insight into the performance and durability of a product when it is being used. FIRA’s UKAS-accredited laboratory carries out testing which simulates

FP303.indd 50

real-life use and foreseeable misuse for all types of furniture and related products for both the domestic and contract markets. The FIRA general product safety principles are applied to both the domestic and the contract furniture sector. They say, “a product should be suitable for its intended use and so a product should be tested to the correct hazard level for the environment.” Again, a sentiment echoed by AkzoNobel in their quest to ensure that their popular products are continually exposed to a range of independent tests by FIRA. Recently AkzoNobel have had some very positive results regarding FIRA testing on six of its most popular interior paint coating systems. In each product type FIRA tested a clear and opaque system with the AkzoNobel products achieving a full house of six passes. The coating systems submitted for FIRA testing were based around three of AkzoNobel’s most popular and innovative systems; the Duracid Formaldehyde-Free Acid Catalysed, Quantum and Aqualit systems. All were applied to MDF panels with a clear lacquer finish and an opaque colour tested in all cases. The test requirements were both rigorous and challenging and included: • FIRA Standard 6250 2018 Specification: Furniture Materials (Interior): • Finish Performance – Horizontal

Surfaces: For Contract use • Finish Performance – Horizontal Surfaces: For Domestic use The performance summary produced passes for all six products • FS 6250 2018 Finish Performance – Horizontal Surfaces: Contract • FS 6250 2018 Finish Performance – Horizontal Surfaces: Domestic Duracid FF from AkzoNobel is a series of acid-curing products delivering high-quality results without the use of formaldehyde. It’s a system that’s formaldehydefree, and isocyanate-free with no odour to the end user on either coated furniture or fittings. To see the range- www.akzonobelwoodcoatings.com/products/acidcuring.html#.W21uu9JKjIU The Duracid FF clear AC lacquer which successfully passed the FIRA testing regime is extensively used at Stourport-on-Severnbased Witley Jones which designs, manufactures and installs bespoke furniture for schools needing a formaldehyde-free coating for a school project in Worcestershire. It’s all about providing peace of mind. Paul Brennan UK general manager, AkzoNobel Wood Coatings comments: “The testing by FIRA on some of our most popular ranges and the results we achieved are a testament to the rigorous standards we set at AkzoNobel on both the safety and performance of our products.” To contact AkzoNobel directly for further details on its products, specifications and to see the list of UK and Ireland distributors follow the link www.sikkens-woodcoatings.co.uk/en/home.html and www.akzonobel.com/en/uki

Makita introduces cross line laser measures to CXT range Makita has introduced four new Cross Line lasers to the popular CXT range of power tools which are packed with invaluable functions for accurate interior measuring and alignment. Both of the new self-levelling Makita 12vMax Cross Line CXT models, the SK105DZ with red laser, and the SK105GDZ with green laser, offer clear line visibility of up to 25m and 35m respectively, and 80m with the detector laser in pulse mode, a function that also helps to reduce battery consumption. The increased return of the cross lines in both vertical and horizontal directions, as well as in tilt, in both locked and unlocked functions, means that the projection of the lines is not only visible to the front surface but are projected back across the ceiling, floor and side walls, and even the stairs, of a room, making them ideal for stud work or pipe work applications. These body only lasers have a pendulum lock for safe transport or so the lines can be fixed at preferred angles if required. The units have a beam levelling accuracy of +/-3mm at a range

of 10m; a horizontal and vertical line accuracy of +/-0.3mm/m; a self-levelling range of +/-4° and a self-levelling time of less than three seconds. An LED light blinks if out of level. Weighing less than a kilo, these Class 2 Cross Line Lasers and have a ¼in tripod thread in the base.

The operating time with a Makita CXT 1.5Ah battery ranges from 15 hours for the red laser model and seven hours for the green laser; 20hrs and 10hrs using a 2.0Ah CXT battery, and up to 40hrs and 20hrs with a 4.0Ah. Green lasers offer increased visibility in brighter work areas and is a more powerful beam.

Two brightness modes, High and Eco, can be selected dependent on working conditions. These robust and versatile lasers are supplied with a comprehensive kit including magnetic holding adaptor, target plate, user manual, carry case and full operating and safety instructions. Tripods are available from Makita’s comprehensive accessories range Two further Makita Class 2 selflevelling 4 Point Cross Line Laser CXT models, the SK106DZ red laser and the SK106GDZ green laser, offer all the functions and benefits of the SK105DZ and SK105GDZ, but are dot lasers. They project plum dots as well as a full line, giving exact measuring references between different points with a point accuracy of +/-2mm/m. Typically these lasers are ideal for the installation of lighting systems and levelling of electric sockets; layout of pipework and ducting; the adjustment of guide rails for drop ceilings; hanging cupboards and shelves level on different walls; and for the installation of partition walls and door frames. www.makitauk.com

Timber frame firm gains from investment in wood waste heater A business that designs and builds timber frame buildings has purchased a new wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology to save on waste disposal bills and heating costs. White Haus is one of the UK’s leading providers of timber frame homes and modular buildings. Established in 2004, the company operates from its 650m2 workshop based on the Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire border. Managing director of White Haus, Adam White, started to look at ways to reduce the amount of money spent on waste disposal whilst also finding a solution to the problem of the freezing cold workshop in the winter months. Someone suggested he looked into the benefits of investing in a wood waste heater and referred him to Wood Waste Technology. Following more information and a site survey, Adam ordered a WT15 which was installed earlier this year by Wood Waste Technology’s experienced engineers. Adam says: “Our workshop was freezing cold in winter and we were

FP303.indd 54

spending around £1800 a month on skip hire to dispose of waste wood, so a wood waste heater seemed an obvious investment to efficiently dispose of our waste wood whilst generating free heating for our 30 employees.” The company also purchased

an add-on heat-dump-system to provide the flexibility to send the heat outside rather than into the factory in the warmer months. Adam says: “This was definitely the right route for our business. It’s a good investment that will save us money whilst providing a more

comfortable working environment for our staff.” Kurt Cockroft of Wood waste Technology says: “A wood waste heater is most definitely a costeffective and productive solution for companies that generate a large amount of waste wood, and the investment can pay back within less than 12 months.” Wood Waste Technology’s years of expertise in wood waste solutions have helped many companies reduce their waste disposal and heating costs. As well as offering site survey, design, manufacture, installation and on-going maintenance for new units, the company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters, available in various sizes and specifications to suit all business applications. www.woodwastetechnology.com

Madera, Barista, Santos – dark wood décors for a sophisticated look Lately, woods with darker shades find their way back into our living areas. They are comfortable and stylish at the same time. Ostermann now supplies the three new ABS edgings Madera, Barista and Santos that are a perfect match for elegant dark furniture with an appealing wood décor. Dark shades of wood are having their comeback in interior design. The combination of modern elements mixed with classic ones creates living areas that make an elegant impression while still coming across comfortably. Darker shades are again preferred for kitchens, as well. A minimalist design and clear linings are here considered the

best choice, avoiding an extremely rustic look. With Madera, Barista and Santos, Ostermann offers three new edgings for an appealing design of dark surfaces in kitchens, bedrooms and other living areas. Barista: dark pine Barista – that is the designation for an expert in the field of coffeemaking. The warm, dark brown of freshly brewed coffee can actually be found on Ostermann’s Barista edging. The edging with a minipearl surface has been matched to the FunderMax board décor with the same name that is based on pine. Madera: dark oak Madera is Spanish and means

wood. This edging with a minipearl surface represents a dark variant of the ongoing oak trend. The slight alternation between brighter and darker lines imitates the natural wood beams of the oak. The edging has been matched to the FunderMax board décor with the same name. Santos: dark acacia Santos is a big port city in Brazil that owes its size mainly to the export of coffee. And coffee brown is the colour of Ostermann’s edging Santos. The décorative play of colours and the lively structure of the edging imitate the slightly irregular pattern of acacia wood. The ABS edging with a wood pore

surface has been matched to the FunderMax board décor with the same name that is based on acacia. Variety from 1m All three edgings are available in the standard widths 23, 33, 43 and 100 mm, and in thicknesses of 1- and 2mm. The edging specialist can cut the 100 mm edgings to any desired width upon request. Ostermann offers edgings from 1m in length, enabling thus the carpenter/cabinet maker to implement this furniture trend individually and without unnecessary material wasting. All stock articles ordered before 4pm are delivered within 24 hours. 01905 793550 www.ostermann.eu

58 Updates With buzzwords such as eco-friendly and sustainability dominating 2018, the trend is also making its mark in the world of furniture & joinery design. The natural, untreated look has surged in popularity in recent years and Hesse’s natural wood effect lacquers are the ideal product for achieving customers’ desired rustic look.

Get on trend in 2019 with Hesse’s natural wood effect lacquers Hesse Lignal offers a comprehensive range of fully tested and certified natural wood effect lacquers, suitable for all surfaces. From light and airy oak finishes to deep mahoganies, Hesse’s effect lacquers offer professionals a multitude of design possibilities for their customers. With just two or three coats of lacquer, the desired wood effect is seamlessly achieved, both on light woods and on darker ones which have previously been stained. Once the lacquer process has been completed, Hesse natural wood effect adapts effortlessly to the structure of the original wood. Not only does the wood look and feel natural, but thanks to Hesse’s EN 13501-1, DIN 4102 B1 and IMO flame retardant lacquer certification, surfaces are protected and incredibly resilient to wear and tear. As to be expected from Hesse, safety does not stop with the fire testing. Its coatings are free of wood preservatives, toxic-heavy metals, phthalate plasticisers, formaldehyde, and volatile aromatic and halogenated organic compounds. The stringent testing criteria means the Hesse natural wood effect range is perfect for high-stress environments such as restaurants, kitchens, bathrooms or any area demanding the highest levels of both chemical

and mechanical resistance. As well as this, the Hesse natural wood effect range has passed the EC-type Examination certificate (Module B) for paint to be used by marine manufacturing professionals. To complement the company’s natural wood effect range, Hesse has also developed InviproOil – an innovative, transparent formulation of oils and waxes – which it says protects the wood against damage and enhances breathability, while still maintaining a rustic, untreated look. Depending on the type of wood, only a few thinly-applied layers are required to ensure wood surfaces are fully protected. As the UK’s leading Hesse partner, Redwood offer unrivalled colour match services, meaning we can deliver colour tones and gloss levels suitable for a range of needs. Kite asks whether your load retention is up to scratch?

In order to help companies in building the bridge to successful transit packing, the Kite Packaging team has introduced three new load retention products. For day-to-day business operations the pick, pack and despatch department plays a huge part in delivering customer satisfaction and can also have a direct impact on brand reputation. Delivering goods from A to B has an associated expectation of trust between businesses and consumers and a big deciding

factor in this level of trust comes from items being delivered on time, in full and undamaged. When palletising goods, the real integral part is making sure they are secured with additional strapping or heat shrinking layers that offer effective protection and minimise damages. One of Kite’s newest additions, a semi-automatic cordless friction weld tool, is ideal for strapping larger, heavier items where extra tension is required. This powerful and efficient tool is perfect for

regular use where speed is important and can be used to tension, seal and cut strapping on demand. The reliable 18V motor provides a quality strap tension and helps to ensure a perfect seal joint. For smaller businesses, large expenditure isn’t necessary for extensive strapping equipment as a simple yet effective solution is Kite’s new ‘strapping in a box’ which is ideal for the smaller user. This polypropylene strapping has everything needed in one box with a clear-cut, self-explanatory diagrams

on the outside, making it also suitable for beginners. An alternative method of protection when palletising goods is heat shrinking. Kite has a range of pallet heat shrink guns on its ecommerce site, including the industry-leading Ripack gun. The packaging giant now also stocks spare parts for the Ripack pallet heat shrink systems, meaning businesses can replace any broken or non-working parts at the end of their life span. www.kitepackaging.co.uk

Hoffmann’s clever new routing machines – ingenious and smart After sterling service, the venerable 25-year-old Hoffmann MU-2 routing machine has recently been relaunched to suit today’s and tommorrow’s industrial needs. As a multi-functional and economical construction connector for the assembly of two parts, the Hoffmann Key itself was a brilliant discovery – so too was the development of the basic Hoffmann MU-2 routing machine. Now, after almost a quarter of a century in service, it has been re-launched as the MU-3. This thoroughly revised machine has been reworked, updated and adapted to suit the current and future needs of the industry, with many new additional features. Ergonomic, user-friendly as well as up-to-date, the new MU-3 is available in four versions. MU-3 Basic version for the quick and precise routing of dovetail slots. MU-3 D Digital version, with electronic two-axis display for the adjustable routing depth as well as the positioning of the centre fence for the routed slot location. It is ideal for high precision work. MU-3 P Pneumatic version for series production and high throughput. Pneumatic workpiece

clamping and controlled router feed. The MU-3 P is operated by foot-pedal control. MU-3 PD Pneumatic/Digital version – the top machine with the highest operating comfort for a wide range of requirements. Functional features are similar to MU-3 P with a digital two-axis display for the adjustable routing depth as well as the positioning of the centre fence for the routed slot location. The MU-3 and the MU-3 D have a workpiece thickness capacity of up to 140mm – in the versions MU-3 P and MU-3 PD this increases

to 170mm. Infinitely adjustable routing depths up to 95mm and protection against break-through of the finished surface. Also new is the two-function hand lever for even faster machine cycles when routing smaller workpieces. The scale tapes in the table and now also in the rear fences assist the quick and precise positioning of the workpieces. All versions of the new MU-3 routing machine are equipped with a motor carriage which has vernier adjustment for the fine setting of the router cutter and hence the tension of the joint. As an option there are extension

The Hoffmann W-0 – the latest key size from Hoffmann The world of creative design is constantly demanding finer and more delicate wood profiles. These finer details are the highlights of modern times and design. These profiles are finer and more discreet, especially in the field of furniture and interior design. But that means, the machining processes for these workpieces will be much more difficult – or a corner joint of such profiles almost impossible ... that was until the new Hoffmann W-0 Key arrived. The new Hoffmann Key W-0, is

FP303.indd 62

approximately 1/3 smaller than its legendary and proven key size, W-1. The W-0 now opens a completely new field of application

tables for the support of longer workpieces as per customer requirements. Furthermore there is a laser line for positioning the workpiece to pencil marks. Good to know, even more so nowadays, that the new cutting edge MU-3 routing machine is 100% Made in Germany. The new Hoffmann MU-3 is available for delivery usually ex-stock. The MU-3 and MU-3 D with all accessories as well as the MU-3 PD has been the main focus of attention at several trade shows and the customer response has been very satisfying. www.hoffmann-uk.com

throughout the woodworking industry. With a cross sectional size of just 3.3 x 4.4mm it will draw together even the smallest of frame profiles – 7mm upwards – with startling strength. Using single or multiple keys, extremely narrow and very high profiles can be jointed. The new W-0 Hoffmann keys are now available in lengths of 10-, 22- and 35mm. Hoffmann Keys are now available in five standard sizes in terms of cross section. Within each cross sectional size, different lengths are available. Thus, for each application, the best possible secure strength is established, to correspond with the expected tension or pressure loads on a joint and hence is totally reliable.

Palamatic – the board and door lifting specialist At the heart of what Palamatic does is a simple idea; it provides businesses who have manual handling problems with solutions that lighten the load for operators, and in many cases enable an impossible process, to become possible. Palamatic is a family-owned company and has over 30 years experience in providing manual handling solutions. Matthew Bennison, customer relations and marketing manager underlines the core agenda of the business: “We lead the way in designing board handling systems for the woodworking industry, balancing the need for safe handling with simple controls and versatility in motion. Our vacuum tube lifters can lift boards, doors and panels to load customer’s processing equipment such as flat-bed CNC stations, routers, edgebanders, laminators, vertical saws or beamsaws; providing an effortless solution to the manual handling strains of lifting and manipulating up to 300kg boards, doors, flat-packs or assembled product.” Matthew continues: “Our equipment will ensure that your operators can safely lift your

product without the risk of personal injury. Production output can be consistently improved, and your product be safe from accidental damage from overhandling.” Palamatic has over 1000 vacuum lifting systems in woodworking companies in the UK, excluding overseas installations and the company is a global business with a second factory in the US and over 50 distributors worldwide. “We offer an end-to-end service from initial sales enquiry to aftersales maintenance contracts,” explains Matthew. “You will find Palamatic board lifters in smaller independent joineries as well as in multi-national high-volume producers. “We pride ourselves in our ability to solve our customers’ handling issues. As processes have progressed, we have redeveloped our solutions to keep in-line with today’s technology. “Palamatic is centrally located in Chesterfield, Derbyshire and we offer a no-obligation site visit and quotation so please get in touch with our sales department so we can begin helping you lighten your load,” concludes Matthew. 01246 452054 www.palamatic.com

Save time with Titus T-type hinges FastFix hinge cup and pie-cut corner hinges are the latest additions to the popular and successful T-type hinge range from cabinet hardware experts, Titus. The new-generation T-type hinges reliably deliver the soft closing action preferred by end users and require only a shallow hinge cup, which makes them suitable for use with door thicknesses ranging from 15 to 26 mm, and they have passed FIRA tests for BS 6222-2-2009, Test Level H. FastFix hinge cup features premounted 8mm diameter expanding dowels that enable precise toolfree insertion and hold the hinge cup accurately in place until the dowels are tightened, making hinge attachment quick and easy. Triplestart screws provide additional time savings. T-type pie-cut corner hinge offers full door opening to 170º, giving easy access to cabinet interiors. And, when both doors are opened, the first is locked at 25º to the second so that both move away from the user and are prevented from hitting adjacent cabinets.

Titus’ T-type FastFix cup hinge

The pie-cut hinge uses a standard 35mm diameter drilling pattern and needs no edge drilling. The T-type hinges feature the

renowned Titus ‘Confident Close’, the consumer-preferred reliable and consistent soft-close damping characterised by late-start

Titus’ T-type pie-cut corner hinge

deceleration and quiet landing in the last stage of closing as the door leans against the cabinet side. The proprietary Titus multi-purpose integrated damping technology is positioned transversal in the hinge cup, ensuring life-long damping with no bounce-back and superior performance. In addition, the hinges are exceptionally tolerant of misalignment and drilling variations. Their unique 3Way tool-less snap-on mounting plate, which offers intuitive hinge-toplate mounting in three directions, greatly simplifies door installation, especially with tall doors that need four or even five hinges. The unique design of the mounting plate reinforces stability and rigidity while maintaining smooth hinge operation. The hinges feature the renowned ‘Titus Damper Inside’ technology, which ensures reliable and consistent life-long damping without rebounce. The dampers are single-direction hydraulic types that are fully sealed to eliminate the possibility of oil leakage. The damping is easy to adjust, which maintains consistent performance on doors with a wide range of different dimensions and weights. www.titusplus.com

70 Pre-owned machinery and equipment 18 months ago, international fixtures, fit-out and maintenance company, CAPS Group, acquired its first manufacturing facility in the UK. Already established in Poland, central Europe, Asia and America and boasting an impressive portfolio consisting of Harley Davidson, Sports Direct, Accor Hotels, Vue Cinema, Triumph and L’Occitane, the new Stockport-based facility needed to be equipped with a new edgebander that would be used as part of an exclusive bespoke manufacturing service. To do this, CAPS Group enlisted the expertise of reconditioned machinery supplier, Ferwood UK, to source the right machine quickly and efficiently.

The Ferwood experience Paul Wilson, CAPS Group’s operations director and UK managing director

“In the past, I was always hesitant to buy used machinery,” begins Paul Wilson, CAPS Group’s operations director and UK managing director. “As a global business, we aim to make the right decisions at the right time. We don’t solely focus on cost because we can never be seen to be short sighted. Before we came across Ferwood, we were under the illusion that second hand machinery was a false economy. Yes, we could save thousands on the purchase price but would the machine meet our high standards and would it last?” It was Ferwood UK’s business model and unique 10-step reconditioning process that first grabbed Paul’s attention during an impromptu Google search. “I’d never come across a company that supplied second hand machinery in the way that Ferwood did and I was keen to find

FP303.indd 70

out more. Before embarking on a factory visit to see the processes for myself, I wanted to hear what Ferwood’s customers had to say about them and their machines. I was pleasantly surprised to read references from well known names in the industry. “Many were big manufacturers who, I know from experience, would not only have the financial freedom to buy new if they saw fit, but would also need to drive their machinery considerably harder than we would as a niche manufacturer. If Ferwood’s reconditioned machinery worked for them, were we missing a trick?” A trip to Ferwood Group’s 18,600 square metre showroom in Pollenzo, Italy, put an end to Paul’s concerns and opened his eyes to Ferwood’s flexible approach to used machinery sales. “The whole process was astonishing,” explains Paul. “I was taken through the

entire process – from stripping the machine down to its carcass and rebuilding it with new parts to thoroughly cleaning and painting the shell. The production line looked like it belonged to a new machinery factory, not a second hand one. They were unbelievably thorough in terms of overhauling the machines and I could immediately see the possibilities open to us. Knowing each machine – regardless of the make or model – would come with a warranty made me change my mind set. A used edgebander from Ferwood was a good fit for our business.” When deciding on the right machine for them, CAPS Group homed in on Ferwood UK’s considerable experience in the sector. “We knew that we wanted a premium machinery brand that would offer reliability and longevity but we were keen to get advice from Ferwood on the best make and model for our business,” explains Paul. As Ferwood UK works with a wide range of machinery brands around the world, offering their customers unparalleled choice from the market. “In order to give the best possible advice, Ferwood was keen to find out more about our company and what we did, the processes we already had in place and the volume of product we were producing. “They offered us several options that suited our needs and budget. The Homag Brandt KDF 660 Profiline edgebander was a good fit for us and ticked every box. In fact, it came with more extras than we originally discussed, helping us to future-proof our business.” Once the sale had been agreed, the machine was fully refurbished in accordance with Ferwood UK’s

Ferwood Approved brand package and installed into CAPS Group’s UK factory within six weeks. “They certainly didn’t disappoint with their lead time,” says Paul. “We try and plan everything to the best of our ability. Whether it’s a new sales plan or assets acquisition strategy, our next move is always governed by our next order. Having the right machine in place at the agreed time and in full working order is key for the business to keep pushing ahead. And, if any issues do arise, we have seen first hand the amount of spare parts readily available to us if ever we need them.” Paul concludes: “First impressions have always been important to me. You can have the best product in the world but if the person your talking to doesn’t have the right approach, or their knowledge falls short, it can de-value the brand. We had every confidence in Ferwood from the off. Their knowledge and background in the industry is second to none. “That’s why we’re continuing to work with Ferwood on our next venture. We’re about to start building a new logistics centre next to our Polish factory and Ferwood was our first point of call for advice on how to grow our production facilities going forward. “We embarked on this new relationship with our eyes wide open and as a result, we know that we can rely on Ferwood to provide us with good quality machines from premium brands, offer solid after sales support and allow us to benefit from their years of experience in the industry and vast manufacturing knowledge. I couldn’t recommend them more highly.” www.ferwoodgroup.com
