Comment Was a show that was! What a terrific four days for the furniture and joinery industry. This year’s W Exhibition and Elements Show has to go down as the most fulfilling and dynamic in recent memory. Hats off to event director Lisa Campagnola and the Montgomery Exhibitions team for delivering a really positive platform where buyers and sellers came together and explored opportunities for growth, and with there was plenty of new product to see, visitors came out in force. But what difference the outcome of the torrid Brexit negotiations makes next March remains to be seen of course, but almost all suppliers we spoke to said, quite simply, that whatever the issues and potential trading obstacles manifest moving forwards, it will be the same for everyone. Most agreed that with good planning, few recognised any insurmountable problems.

A hearty thank you to all those who took time to visit us on our stand – it’s so important and interesting for us to get to talk to our readership (and advertisers) at close quarters. Naturally, we hope to continue with our hospitable platform for the 2020 iteration. And with the show in new, larger halls, those who have not yet sorted their stands should get a move on! The majority of this issue, comprises the first part of our review of the W Exhibition and Elements Show starting on page 43. Alongside that, we have our regular roster of features – Installations, Products and Updates, plus Solid Wood Processing. I hope you enjoy the issue.

Leitz Tooling announces new ISO 9001: 2015 quality management systems standard certification Leitz Tooling UK achieved ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management Systems Standard Certification following its audit last year. By meeting the rigorous criteria for this standard, Leitz affirms its ability to consistently deliver an effective quality management system and drive continuous improvements to its services and internal processes. This internationally-recognised certification is a true testament to Leitz’s dedication to the highest levels of quality management and customer satisfaction, which is at the heart of everything Leitz does. ISO consultant Peter O’Reilly says: “ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System standard is designed to be a powerful business improvement tool. The update was revised to ensure that the standard continued to serve the business community and maintain its relevance in today’s marketplace. Leitz achieved transition to the new version of the standard with zero non-conformance. With previous ISO 9001:2008 certificates becoming invalid September 2018, they are setting a benchmark for their industry.” Overall operational efficiency

as a result of the certification will be audited by BSI, the business standards company, to ensure that the standard is maintained. Leitz Tooling UK managing director Simon Liddell says: “We are proud to be an early adopter of the updated standard within our industry and that our continued hard work has been recognised. It provides further proof that we are serious about service and high quality.” Customers are increasingly seeing ISO 9001:2015 as a prerequisite, as it shows commitment to professionalism and identifies an organised company structure with effective processes in place. Using suppliers accredited with ISO 9001:2015 helps businesses ensure consistent and good quality products and services, which in turn, returns many business benefits. Premier acquires further business in continued drive for expansion Premier Forest Group, one of the UK’s fastest growing timber groups, has acquired Haverfordwest-based timber importer Merlwood Timber Ltd. Since 2011, the verticallyintegrated timber group’s turnover has grown from £53m to a projected £136m in the current financial year and Merlwood will contribute in no small part to this ongoing growth. Merlwood Timber Ltd was formed in 1997 and operates from a three-acre site in Haverfordwest with other strategic dockside locations within the UK. All staff will be joining Premier after a direct approach from the existing directors, who were were keen to safeguard the ‘right ownership,’ the business’ reputation and to secure future investment. Its West Wales site operates a full in-house machining and treatment facility and has built a stellar reputation as leading suppliers of imported and domestically produced solid timber; with timber and builders’ merchants being key clients. Terry Edgell, CEO and co-founder of Premier Forest Group, says: “The acquisition of Merlwood Timber Ltd

Pages.indd 7

gives Premier the opportunity to strengthen its distribution capacity in Wales and to expand its group sales revenue and geographic reach. “The Merlwood team bring with them additional customer and supplier relationships and their capacity to machine timber inhouse, which adds to the value and service we can now offer to our own group’s customer base. “Particularly exciting is the fact that the full management team and staff are firmly committed to joining the Premier Forest Group. They are embracing the opportunities the acquisition brings with it and we hope to see a period of job creation, capital investment and sales expansion within Wales for both Merlwood and our other three Welsh sites as a result of this acquisition.”

Kite Packaging’s drive to reduce plastic usage

Kite Packaging’s challenge to reduce plastic usage by 120 tonnes is supported by its plasticfocused white paper and mobile packaging test facility UK-based company, Kite Packaging, has launched its sustainable future plastics initiative to reduce plastic levels with the unveiling of its new mobile packaging test facility and the release of its white paper. With the increasing focus on plastics and the harmful impact on the environment, businesses and consumers across the country are searching for viable solutions to build a sustainable, circular economy. When it comes to the environment, it is particularly difficult to change consumers’ behaviour. In order to help raise awareness across the UK, the Kite team has challenged itself, and its customers, to reduce plastic usage by a huge 120 tonnes by the end of 2019. Kite’s white paper provides businesses and consumers with an essential guide to plastic packaging and offers new alternatives to help people across the country in building a circular economy. The Kite team’s new, fully equipped truck is a mobile testing and demonstration facility in which its packaging technologists can carry out waste minimising packaging audits to determine how plastic packaging can be reduced, as well as offering more ecofriendly packing alternatives. The employee-owned business announced the challenge earlier this month when the team held a plastic packaging conference in the Midlands, at which it launched

both the truck and its plastics white paper. For a multitude of businesses, packaging is a substantial part of their day-to-day operation, but often companies are using excess amounts of plastics and are not looking for eco-friendly alternatives. Kite can help businesses explore a range of alternatives to traditional plastic based packaging. Its mobile testing facility enables the scientific analysis and testing of current packing operation whilst incorporating a full suite of alternative packaging systems and solutions. Gavin Ashe, managing partner at Kite Packaging, says: “Everyone in business is fantastically busy, focusing on running their business and packaging often ends up an afterthought. “So we have invested in our mobile test facility to take the solutions directly to the customer, where we can demonstrate, design and even test solutions at the customer’s factory, saving everyone time and money. “We really are a packaging company who want you to use less packaging. Join us in saving 120 tonnes of packaging waste this year.” For further information on how to reduce plastics use, view Kite’s white paper: kitepackaging.co.uk/images/ pdf/plastic-white-paper.pdf

Flexible finance options enhances online service Find out how Close Brothers Asset Finance supported an established joinery business to upgrade its CNC capacity and grow its online offering. The customer From its factory in Northamptonshire, Boardland.co.uk is a family run joinery business that manufactures a variety of products. It produces cut panels, skirting boards, architraves, door frames, cupboard doors plus many other products from MR MDF (HDF), softwood and hardwoods. This online service was developed to offer customers a fast track service at competitive prices. Providing delivery throughout the UK, Boardland.co.uk has a wide range of designs whilst also offering a bespoke service to meet any requirements.

The challenge In order to enhance its services, Boardland.co.uk needed to upgrade its CNC capacity by acquiring an SCM Sigma Prima 67 Beamsaw. A quick finance solution was required but with a flexible deposit since the business was investing heavily in a new website.

Derek Rance, Managing Director, Boardland.co.uk met with Richard Randall, Area Sales Manager, Close Brothers Asset Finance to discuss requirements. Boardland.co.uk is a long term customer of Close Brothers and therefore Richard was already aware of the business background.

The solution Within 24 hours, Richard was able to assist in the approval of a £0 deposit deal by taking security over other existing machinery and releasing

some of the equity in the assets to the customer for the VAT, leaving the customer’s cash flow untouched. A structured Hire Purchase and Sale and HP Back agreement was put in place over a 60 month term.

The outcome CNC services are now being advertised on the new website which will help to increase production capacity and profit margins.

“We already had a long term relationship with Close Brothers Asset Finance and know that they work closely with key suppliers enabling them to make quick decisions and turnaround, so they were naturally our first port of call. The finance product offered enabled us to invest elsewhere including the website and delivery of the machinery was made within the same week of the order.” Derek Rance, Boardland.co.uk

A great W Exhibition and Elements for Blum

The Blum cinema

The recent W Exhibition and Elements Show at the NEC in Birmingham was a huge success for Blum, with an innovative stand attracting record numbers of visitors. A visit to the Blum cinema – complete with popcorn – introduced training services, support software and assembly devices that Blum offer, alongside the core Blum products; hinges, drawers and lift systems. The main area of the stand was dedicated to the assembly devices which Blum offer to save time and make life easier for manufacturers and fitters. The Easystick assembly device was undoubtedly the star of the show, demonstrating how simple it is to manufacture hinges with total precision. When used along with Blum’s Cabinet Configurator, and Minipress, it makes it superbly easy to produce drilling patterns, do line drilling, and drill holes for cabinet profiles, front fixings, hinges etc. Whether workshop based, or a user of CNC machines, Blum says

customers will find that using Easystick will free up time and help to speed up the manufacturing process. According to the company, many visitors left eagerly anticipating the launch of Easystick and Cabinet Configurator. Also on display and being demonstrated were a number of other assembly devices, jigs, templates, and machines, all available from the Blum Kit Store (www.blumkit.co.uk), which could be ordered on the stand, with free delivery. Matthew Glanfield, technical manager at Blum UK explains: “The cinematic experience lured a high number of visitors to the stand. The main feature captivated our audiences whilst telling our story of support and launching the new Blum 2018 catalogue, arguably our most comprehensive ever. The experience also raised the awareness of our Kit Store and the free training offered by Blum UK at Milton Keynes.” 01908 285700 www.blum.com

Alpi wins Elements of Innovation award Alpi’s first finished panel collection, the ALPI-On, has won a Gold Award at the Elements of Innovation Awards at this year’s woodworking machinery and materials exhibition, the W Exhibition and Elements show. Created to offer the design market a new and inspiring take on surface design, the leading decorative surfaces producer, known for its use of reconstituted wood veneer, has created the new 12-strong collection with the contract market in mind. Designed to be an interior facing material, each panel features different grains, colours and depths to reflect the beauty of natural wood. They are also clad on both sides and can have a varnished, brushed or smooth finish. On winning the award, Alpi SpA’s Pier Luigi Corti says: “To win an Elements of Innovation Award is a great honour for our company. The whole team have worked hard to create this new collection and every design within the range offers a unique and appealing aesthetic. We’re confident the market will respond positively to

our latest designs and explore the possibilities they offer.” Independent judge and acting CEO of the British Woodworking Federation, Helen Hewitt says: “I chose Alpi because of the creative nature of the new collection. My background in wallpaper design has opened my eyes to how spaces can be connected by patterns, surfaces and colour. I immediately migrated towards these designs because of their unique colour range and vivid textures. I can clearly see this being used in the interiors and hotel sector. It’s truly inspiring.” Independent judge, Paul Lighterness adds: “We live in a visual world and to me, this product is visually striking. It stood out because of its contrasting colours and exciting patina. It’s pushed the boundaries of design and that is what innovation is all about.”

Biesse’s Opera R wins Elements of Innovation award Leading woodworking machinery manufacturer, Biesse UK, has won the Elements of Innovation Gold Award for its unique Opera R sanding machine at this year’s W Exhibition and Elements. Part of the company’s new Automaction concept, which brings automated, inter-connected production manufacturing processes to the woodworking industry, the new Opera R has been designed to offer a greater sanding consistency and a higher continuity of output on flat panels and Shaker doors. Controlled via a 15in touch screen, the new Opera R has succeeded in reproducing sanding processes that were previously only achievable through manual methods. This has resulted in the elimination of human error, reduced production costs and increased efficiency, leading to greater productivity. Giacomo Mariotti, product area manager for Biesse, says: “This machine is an industry first and we believe it will revolutionise the way

Giacomo Mariotti, product area manager wfor Biesse with Biesse UK MD Steve Bulmer

the industry works. Automation has huge potential in the woodworking sector but is yet to be fully utilised. We hope our machines will change this. “The Opera R sanding machine – partnered with a collaborative robot that offloads the doors – offers quality, safety and consistency during the sanding process. It’s simplified the cycle and as a result, the return on investment is almost immediate. “It’s a versatile machine – it can be used as a stand-alone machine or in a production line – and we have a number of options to accommodate a wide range of applications, including a model that features two robots and two conveyor belts to double productivity.”

14 Finance

Demystifying asset finance for the woodworking industry

Pages.indd 14

24/10/2018 15:23

I’ve been working in asset finance for so long now that I take it for granted that everyone knows what it is; yet, in our quarterly survey of 1000 UK SMEs – which we call our business barometer – the percentage of yes responses to the question: Have you heard of asset finance?, has remained stubbornly at around 40% – since 2013. What is asset finance? Asset finance is an alternative form of funding used by businesses to obtain the equipment they need to grow. Common examples of asset finance products are: • Hire purchase (HP) allows the customer to buy the equipment on credit. The finance company purchases the asset on behalf of the customer and owns the asset until the final instalment is paid, at which point the customer is given the option to buy it • Refinancing (Capital Release): The finance company purchases the asset and finances it back to you. Repayments are calculated in line with the income stream that will be generated by the asset; at the end of the refinance term, you own the asset • Finance lease: The full value of the equipment is repaid to the finance company, plus interest, over the lease period. At the end of the term, the company can choose to: – continue to use the asset by entering a secondary rental period – sell the asset and keep a portion of the income from the sale – return it • Operating lease: Similar to a finance lease, an operating lease allows you to rent the asset from us while you need it. The key difference between the two is that an operating lease is only for part of the asset’s useful life. This means you pay a reduced rental because the cost is based on the difference between the asset’s original purchase price and its residual value at the end of the agreement.

Pages.indd 15

Types of assets financed The beauty of asset finance is its flexibility – it can be used to fund any asset, including: • CNC routers • Sanders • Moulders • Saws • Edgebanders • Planers • Jointers • Mortisers • Milling machines • Drill press There is very little that we won’t consider financing. We can even help with the refurbishment of assets, for example, where we pay the refit costs by taking security of an asset to aid cashflow, via Sale & HP Back. It makes the otherwise unaffordable affordable because it gives businesses access to the equipment they need without incurring the cash flow disadvantage of an outright purchase. Agreements can also be customised to the business’s needs, with flexibility on both the term and repayment schedule. Why Close Brothers Asset Finance? We are the largest, most successful and longestestablished specialist asset finance funder in the UK with over 30 years’ experience working with SMEs through all economic cycles – the fact is, there’s very little we haven’t seen or experienced. Our team of finance specialists – many of who have relevant sector experience themselves – work with businesses across the UK to provide funding for both new and used equipment. As sector experts, they understand how vital it is that you have the right equipment, so whether you are looking to expand your range of equipment or replace it, we can help. www.closeassetfinance.co.uk/asset-finance

Case study With over 20 years’ experience between them, craftsmen and designers Malcolm Weir and Tom Jarvis established West & Reid, a furniture and cabinetmaking business. Based in London, the company manufactures bespoke kitchens and residential interiors. The challenge To grow the business, the owners wanted to invest in a new SCM Morbidelli N100 CNC router. Solution After being put in contact with Close Brothers Asset Finance, the team put in place an unwritten hire purchase agreement within 48 hours, along with a VAT deferral after the arrival of the machine did not match up with the end of West & Reid’s VAT quarter. The outcome Not only was the business able to invest in the latest technology to produce outstanding quality kitchens and enhance its offering, but the additional support of a VAT-deferral protected West & Reid’s cash flow while waiting for the VAT to be reclaimed.

16 Installations One of the UK’s largest and most successful suppliers of furniture to leading retailers such as John Lewis, Marks & Spencer and Next, Westbridge Furniture Design, is always looking for ways to further enhance the quality of its products while maximising the efficiency of its manufacturing operations.

Thinking outside the box – and inside as well! To achieve these goals, the company has recently been working with adhesives expert Chemique Adhesives to improve production techniques not only for its furniture products, but also for the packaging used to ship them. As a result of this collaboration, Westbridge has achieved considerable time savings and has received positive feedback from customers worldwide. Westbridge operates out of three UK sites which between them, total more than 450,000ft2 of production, design and office space. The company employs 1300 people in the UK and at its two dedicated cut-and-sew factories in Romania. Its full product range includes more than 150,000 variants and every new design must be tested and shown to meet strict performance criteria before it goes into production. When Westbridge first contacted Chemique, it was looking for a supplier of single part waterbased adhesives. After an initial consultation, specialists from Chemique assessed Westbridge’s requirements in detail, and suggested that an alternative – ProAqua 2, a two-part water-based adhesive system ideally suited to bonding foam, wood and fabrics – would be a better option. ProAqua 2 is a high-grade adhesive that guarantees no fabric bleed-through and excellent tack on difficult substrates. It is a twopart water-based product that is safe and user-friendly and offers excellent adhesion when bonding foam to wood and fabrics. These

Pages.indd 16

characteristics, together with ease of application and proven performance, make it an ideal choice for heavy duty furniture applications. Westbridge uses the ProAqua adhesive for fabricating foam cushions and sofa arms. “We were very impressed with the performance, convenience and economy of the water-based adhesive, so we asked Chemique if they could also help us find a good bonding solution for our packaging,” says Paul Myerscough, works director at Westbridge Furniture. “They suggested the Protak range of hot-melt adhesives which eliminated the need for tape. Using these adhesives, we can put the boxes together very quickly as the adhesive dries almost instantly. This way we save time whilst also creating a visually appealing package in keeping with our highend bespoke products.” As part of on-going improvements, Chemique also offered a hot melt system from its Protak range for bonding foam to sofa frames and eliminating the need for staples. This not only improves efficiency but also removes any foam pinching caused by stapling, giving the furniture a fuller, smoother appearance. Protak is a technically advanced range of adhesives based on EVA, PUR, Polyolefin and resins. The products in the range have been specially formulated to provide high adhesive performance in a variety of applications such as edgebanding, panel lamination, profile wrapping, product assembly,

foam bonding and packaging. Chemique has supplied and currently maintains all of Westbridge Furniture’s hot melt machines, hoses and guns and has also installed overhead gantries and counter balances to improve safety, reduce damages and improve operator efficiency. Westbridge also required six spray booths for adhesive application. Chemique designed and installed these booths and now

maintains them when necessary as part of the Chemique Adhesives Total Service Package, which includes tailor-made adhesive and sealant solutions combined with full engineering and technical support. “The spray booths are working very well for us and, with the excellent training our staff have received from Chemique Adhesives, they are helping us to achieve significantly improved efficiency and productivity across the board,” says Paul Myerscough. “We enjoy working with the Chemique team as they are proactive in solving problems and suggesting improvements – and their expertise means we can rely on them to come up with the right solution. But what really counts for us is that they think both inside and outside the box – and that’s a key skill in our industry!” 01922 459321 www.chemiqueadhesives.com

18 Installations Following installation of a high-performance CNC router supplied by AXYZ International, Burton upon Trent-based W H Mason & Son has boosted production and enabled further diversification into new markets.

AXYZ router helps boost production at leading UK timber merchant

Established in 1897, W H Mason & Son is one of the longest-established and most successful businesses in Staffordshire, founded on an impressive pedigree and supported by a continually expanding customer base. As a major importer, stockist and distributor of different kinds of timber, the company enables a wide range of applications in many different markets, including the industrial woodworking, furniture manufacturing, joinery and panel processing sectors. A key activity, however, is the supply of bespoke products such as exhibition stands, retail display units and shelving, garden furniture and, somewhat uniquely, wooden casks for the wine, brewing and distilling industries. Director of W H Mason & Son, Mike Cherry comments: “Our successful business relationship with AXYZ International dates back to the time we installed a smaller CNC router supplied by Pacer Systems prior to its acquisition by AXYZ. “At that time, we were sourcing only production tools from the AXYZ 24/7 online purchasing facility and it was due to AXYZ International’s

Pages.indd 18

known reputation for reliability that we decided to purchase a new and higher-performance AXYZ machine that would better meet current and predicted future customer requirements.” The AXYZ CNC router installed is one of the 4000 series and arguably the most popular within the industries being served by W H Mason. Sales manager of the company, Jason Cherry commented: “The AXYZ 4010 machine has a processing area of 3m x 1.5m. It will handle all sizes and volumes of the work we undertake and incorporates a 10-station ATC (Automatic Tool Change) facility for work involving multiple tooling requirements and the latest AXYZ A2MC machine controller. “As explained by AXYZ International, this particular machine enhancement is designed to comprehensively resolve problems associated with ‘bounce’ and vibration caused by sudden acceleration/deceleration frequently experienced with less technically-advanced control systems.” The router is supported by the non-standard Vectric Aspire design and production software rather than the standard Vectric Pro version generally supplied with AXYZ machines. Jason

Cherry adds: “The choice of software was based on our need for greater flexibility and ease of use and because the Vectric Aspire software is fully compatible with the laser cutting systems we also use.” On the service provided by AXYZ International, prior to, during and following installation of the AXYZ 4010 router, both Mike and Jason Cherry concurred: “The service was excellent, from the initial discussions covering our precise requirements, the ability to visit the AXYZ main facility in Telford for a demonstration of the router before placing an order, through to the subsequent on-site product training and ongoing technical support provided.” As to the future, Mike Cherry concludes: “We have the space and capacity to increase the number of machines and make additions to our workforce to meet customer requirements. For both, the service provided by AXYZ International will continue to be a key factor.” 01952 291600 www.axyz.co.uk 01283 563455 www.whmasonandsonltd.co.uk

20 Installations Working in collaboration with UK architecture and design agency, New British Design (NBD), Festool tools has been used to help create the off-grid pop-up pub. The unique Cornwall-based project is now fully operational – powered solely through hydro and solar technology.

The UK’s newest off-grid hideaway cabin built with Festool tools Working with nature to enhance what was already there, the low-impact cabin structure was created from a pared down material palate of wood, tin and polycarbonate, using only locally-sourced products. It was important that the tools used were of the highest quality, designed with ease-of-use and safety in mind. Without the use of electricity in such a remote location, the project required equipment that was both mobile and efficient, and Festool provided the ideal solution. The Festool drills used on the project, including the T18 and C18, benefit from premium battery durability which was perfect for the 12-hour work days onsite. They also feature brushless EC-TEC motor technology, making them light without compromising on power, perfect for users in any location. “I’ve trialled all the professional grade tool brands over the years and Festool has consistently stood out as the best” explains Ben Huggins, architect and designer founder of New British Design, came up with the highly innovative concept “We needed to exploit the options available to us through the cordless range, beyond just drills and drivers. The unique cabin was an off-grid project, and needed an off-grid solution.” A key tool for the project was Festool’s TSC 55 plunge cut saw. “Being able to accurately redimension timber sections on site proved invaluable, and there was little it couldn’t handle” says Ben. With a powerful 5200 revolutions per minute and 2.2mm standard saw blade, the TSC 55 provided the necessary precision needed, whilst maintaining a powerful cutting capacity, and the quick acting break and guide wedge provided essential safety to users. Festool’s commitment to the heath of trade

professionals was also demonstrated on site, with the new Eccentric Sander ETSC connected to a dust extractor to keep the working environment clear of harmful dust whilst the tool was in use. Dust extraction is an integral element of the Festool system, with all products ergonomically designed to work together to provide a comfortable and efficient environment, as well as a high-quality finish. “The Festool range is made up of professional tools designed and built to deliver outstanding results,” concludes Ben. “With their unique value proposition of being the go-to premium tool brand, the decision of New British Design and other professionals to pay extra for quality and precision is well justified”. 22 Installations Geert Hermes launched his own woodworking company in 1995. Some 23 years later he’s still in business – in Nistelrode in the Netherlands with 17 employees. Geert’s been keeping his factory clean and safe with a Modesta chain filter for 14 years.

“You can have the best performing woodworking machines, but without dust extraction you’ll get nowhere!” We meet Geert Hermes, owner and founder of G Hermes Joinery, in his office in Nistelrode. This is where he moved in 2007 when the original factory became too small to house his growing business. From here he produces and delivers wooden window frames, windows, doors, folding walls and sliding doors, for both consumers and businesses. Geert specialises in façade units in various wood types, like mahogany, merbau and accoya. Many of his products go to contractors and construction companies, used in non-residential constructions, new building projects and house renovations, among others; the rest go to consumers who might need a new window frame, for instance. Living up to expectations Geert was no stranger to the woodworking industry when he launched his business in 1995. He had operated a woodworking factory for years alongside his father and younger brother. After a decade and at the age of 28 he decided to leave and do something else, but, as he likes

to put it himself, “Carpentry never lost its charm.” When he found the perfect location in Nistelrode two years later, he decided to take the plunge and start his own business. “I knew the market, the customers and suppliers, and I knew where to go. I just needed to live up to their expectations.” After two months he hired his first employee, and in the first year he hired another five. Same product, changing market Geert and his team saw the wood industry change over the years. “We started to get more and more small orders instead of a few big ones.” The reason was an increase in consumers buying directly from him, but also changes in the housing market. As Geert explains, where a new block of houses would previously be built in one go, and he would have to deliver a large order of window frames and doors, projects would now be completed in several, smaller steps. Geert also notices a shift in what happens behind a computer and what’s done on the factory floor:

Pages.indd 22

24/10/2018 15:23

23 “Before, I’d give the plan of a house to one of my carpenters to get to work. I’d make some notes, add some explanation here and there, and trusted he knew what to do. Nowadays I have to prepare the data completely beforehand and make sure every detail is right, because the drawing goes into the machine. There’s not that much manual work involved any more.” A step forward What didn’t change is the importance of good dust extraction. “Safety standards become increasingly more demanding and machines are packed with sensors. You can have the most beautiful woodworking machines, but without dust extraction you’ll get nowhere,” says Geert. His company grew steadily through several expansions, but the biggest step forward occurred in 2004: he leapt ahead with automation and his filter system’s capacity became inadequate.

That’s where Modesta came in. Geert explains: “I was aware of them because they were quite well known in the industry.” At the time he was using a system delivered by another company, but it had experienced plenty of problems. “There was always something wrong. We had to halt our machines on a regular basis because of problems with the dust extraction. When that happens we could be looking at two days of stock before all my workers would be left standing empty-handed on the factory floor. I decided to invest in a Modesta filter system to stop this from happening.” Operational reliability and service Geert uses a chain filter with a Reddler chain to remove sawdust from the factory floor safely and without concerns. Once he had bought that first machine he never looked back. “I was very satisfied with Modesta right from the start. Their operational reliability and service make the difference,” he says. In the 14 years he’s been using Modesta’s expertise, his production hasn’t stood still for a day. “All we have had is one machine failure on a winter day because of the cold, but when it

Pages.indd 23

happened, Modesta’s service team made sure the problem was fixed in no time.” Another advantage is the modular set-up of the machines, says Geert. “The good thing about those several small motors is that the system can keep operating at all times.” Geert’s point of contact has always been Jan Plette, with whom he’s still in regular touch. He’s also very happy with the services of the technicians. “It’s a good thing that it’s always the same guys who come over for the installation and maintenance. They have a lot of knowledge and deliver a good job.” A Modesta filter system is an investment he admits. “But it’s totally worth it – when you experience the disadvantages of unexpected interruptions, you’re ready to invest in a Modesta system.” What would he like to advise potential customers about to take their factories to the next level? “Don’t hesitate. The most important thing is that you’ll always be able to keep your factory running. And Modesta makes sure of that.” +44 113 8680 247 www.modestafilters.co.uk

Harjender went on to say: “Felder’s approach was perfect, their team took the time to understand our business and take us to see workshops with the machines that we would need. They were also able to sort out extraction, compressed air and site layouts. “In short Felder are the one-stop solution that doesn’t stop after you purchase their machines with training and servicing all matching the high standard provided before we purchased the machines.” The tempora 60.12 e-motion is the premium edgebander offered by the Felder Group, with three spaces for finishing units and 10.4in colour touch screen control panel, edgebanding has never been easier. Workshop manager Yashpal Batchu says: “We wanted the best finish we could achieve for our products and with the tempora 60.12 edgebander that is exactly what we got! The fine adjustments that can be made from the touch screen and the ability to store previous settings means we get a fast and reliable finish every time.” 01908 635000 www.felder-group.co.uk

Elements excels for Titus

“Excellent in every respect!” was how cabinet hardware expert Titus described its experience at the recent W Exhibition and Elements event. The company reports that its stand was busy throughout the whole event and that the quality of the visitors was high – as was their level of interest in the new and innovative products Titus had on show. Especially popular were the latest T-type hinges that are fast and easy to install even in applications that are traditionally considered difficult, the innovative Quickfit TL5 Full Metal Jacket dowels that produce strong joints in a wide range of materials, and the new slimline range of Tekform drawers that maximise usable drawer space. One of the key features of Titus T-type hinges is its unique 3Way snap-on mounting plate that allows intuitive hinge-to-plate mounting in three directions, and this attracted a lot of attention from visitors to the show. Users of T-type hinges simply present the hinge to the mounting plate in whichever direction is most convenient for the job being carried out, and then snap it into place – no tools needed. This process saves a lot of time and trouble, especially in challenging applications like tall cabinets that require four or more hinges per door. Other features of T-type hinges that captured

Pages.indd 28

visitors’ interest are its shallow hinge cup drilling depth, which makes it suitable for use with doors from 15-26mm thick, and its rigid design which ensures that the T-type is able to tolerate a high level of drilling misalignment without performance impairment. The hinges include damping as standard, and this can be easily adjusted to give effective soft closing for a wide range of door sizes and weights. The Quick-Fit TL5 Full Metal Jacket dowels that Titus was showing at the exhibition provide exceptional pull-out resistance and are suitable for use in wooden materials of all types, including MDF, chipboard and solid wood. This means that furniture manufacturers no longer have to stock a different dowel for each type of material they use. The new TL5 dowels provide strong and reliable joints without needing to be used in conjunction with wooden dowels, which simplifies furniture assembly as well as reducing part count. They are highly tolerant of drilling inaccuracies, and their expanding steel sleeve ensures reliable engagement in nominal 5mm diameter dowel holes. They are ideal for use in conjunction with Titus tool-less Quickfit technology for fast and cost-effective infactory dowel insertion across a wide range of applications.

Visitors to the Titus stand who were looking for advances in drawer box design were not disappointed. The new Tekform slimline drawers that were on show are ideally suited to the demanding high-end kitchen and bedroom furniture market. Slimline versions of the popular Tekform double-wall drawers, have side panels that are just 14mm wide, and combine attractive sleek appearance with more usable space in a given size of drawer than standard versions. A particular benefit for the many companies that already use Tekform drawers is that the slimline versions use the same drilling patterns for runners as standard drawers in the range. This means that the new drawers can be used to update and enhance existing products without the need for design changes. Commenting on the show, Phil Beddoe, UK and Northern Europe general manager at Titus, says: “It was a real pleasure to meet so many of our customers and industry colleagues over the four days and I’d like to thank them all for taking the time to visit our stand. It’s great to be exhibiting again in the UK, which is Titus’s home market, and I very much enjoyed watching our customers’ positive reactions to our latest innovations.” www.cabinet.titusplus.com

30 Solid wood processing

Solid timber technology – a global first for Homag

Having gained more than 20 years’ experience in the solid wood industry with CNC machining centres and supporting equipment, Homag proudly announced its further expansion into this market sector with the launch of an exciting new range of industrial four sided planer/moulding machines. The introduction of this genuinely unique profiling solution represented a real milestone in the company’s history and enables Homag to offer a full range of solid wood processing machines to the joinery sector. Simon Brooks, Homag UK’s managing director explains: “The launch of the Mouldteq M-300 series (previously known as LPP 300 series) emphasises Homag’s dedication to offer high quality machinery for every stage of the solid wood processing chain. “The ever increasing complex designs of window profiles, intricate machining details of

door frames and the demand for smaller batch sizes are significant challenges manufacturers face. Remaining competitive is centred on the sheer quality of the finished product and the ability to produce it efficiently. That’s why it’s so important that the solid timber is planed to the highest possible standard, creating the perfect quality foundation ahead of the next stage of production. “The Mouldteq M-300 series is a real game changer for small to medium sized manufacturers. Homag has taken what is considered a very traditional piece of machinery and created a solution that combines stateof-the-art technology with solid mechanical engineering.” Offering a high level of flexibility, Homag’s Mouldteq M-300 planer moulders deliver not only variable feed speeds from 6 – 24 m/min but also variable spindle speeds. Each spindle

Pneumatic adjustable top feed rollers adjust the contact pressure for different profiles and wood types

Pages.indd 30

can be individually programmed between 4000-8000rpm. This particular design feature is driven by the singular motors dedicated to each spindle, whereby operators can control each head to create optimal workpiece quality. The Mouldteq M-300 series for solid wood focuses highly on profile processing, offering various performance classes throughout the range which are equipped with five, six, seven or even eight spindles. Each model is equipped with tool management and Homag’s own proLock spindle clamp system, allowing for quick-set ups and efficient machine operation. In keeping with the Homag standard, the Mouldteq M-300 series is powerTouch operated - a truly unique feature in the moulder industry. Established as the operating philosophy of Homag, this system unites design and function in a new generation of control systems. Easy, ergonomic and user friendly – with just a few touches the operator can efficiently load and select processing programs on the 21.5in widescreen interactive monitor. Simon Brooks concludes, “The introduction of planer moulders to the Homag range is a clear indication to the growth strategy for the company and its continuous commitment to offer customers all solutions for wood processing from a single source – for both the joinery and panel sectors. Since the launch of the Mouldteq M-300 series, they have attracted great interest from the crowds and we have since received countless enquiries for the new Homag range.” For more information on the Mouldteq M-300 series range or to arrange a demonstration, call Homag UK on 01332 856424. www.homag.com

32 Solid wood processing

Masterwood’s solid solutions For many years, all small workshops contained the classic machines – overhand planer, thicknesser, chisel mortiser, single end tenoner, vertical spindle moulder, and, in some cases, an overhead router and a stair trencher. These machines all relied heavily on the skills of dedicated wood machinists. Then the revolution started, and along came the through-feed planer/moulder, and suddenly the small workshops could do all their planning in a quarter of the time, leaving the skilled workforce to perform the more complicated jobs. Today, with a big decline in trained wood machinists and woodworkers in general, most companies find it very hard to recruit either skilled tradesman or youngsters to be trained. So often one hears of companies which have spent a number of years training staff, who then leave. Many companies now find that the answer to this lack of skilled workers is the CNC machining centre. For many years, Masterwood Spa has been recognised around the world as one of the leading suppliers of CNC machinery for the solid timber industry, starting with the Muti oscillating chisel mortisers, moving on to CNC drilling machines, and finally the allround CNC machining centres. The panel industry was always the big area for companies producing CNC machines – it was simple drilling and routering. However, Masterwood followed the solid timber industry – a far more

Pages.indd 32

difficult route due to the materials used, type of work involved, and for many companies everything made is different. Masterwood soon developed dedicated machines like the Teknomat and Project Door that were ideal for door frame components plus solid core and composite doors, and this was closely followed by the DoorLine, a CNC machine that can cut all the hinges, with pilot holes, door lock, and handle holes, in less than 30 seconds. Coupled with handling equipment, this allowed small production lines for dedicated door set companies. In the late 90s, Masterwood commissioned its first staircase software package, a DOS-based programme which allowed small customers to design and build a full winder stair in a couple of man hours. Over 20 years later, the software packages have developed through Masterwood’s own UK-produced MasterStair to the current Masterwood Stair package, developed in partnership with StairBiz. Today’s software allows nearly any design of stair to be developed in minutes. This includes stairs in more than one direction, open plan, cut string, curved strings, winders, and landings. Cutting sheets and drawings are produced along with rendered 3D views. Programmes are produced for every component, including strings, treads, newels and handrails. Once on the CNC, every operation – even the draw bore holes – is machined, and a couple of hours of

machining results in a full stair kit that goes together, and with no real bench work to make it fit, as with traditional methods. Masterwood now has over 120 UK and Ireland customers using one of these stair packages, and there are even a few still using the original DOS-based package. With more and more stairs being demanded by the industry, new developments have been made that will allow stair components to be automated with CNC and handling equipment to allow higher production with less labour costs. The biggest changes for the bespoke joinery industry is that as PCs have become more powerful, better software has been developed. This is an important area for the solid timber market, and to this extent, Masterwood has continued to develop software with its own company and preferred partners to allow the same sort of system developed for stairs to be

applied to windows, timber frame doors, traditional box windows, furniture, roofs, conservatories, decorative panels and carvings. “As a fully-qualified wood machinist I know how time consuming it was to make one-off jobs in the workshop, especially stairs. With the continuous development of CNC machines and software it means that any workshop can still provide the complicated and impressive work that their clients demand,” says Masterwood GB director Dave Kennard. “Masterwood has many customers in the UK and Ireland producing one-off bespoke joinery, some of it is shown in the pictures here. Over the coming years we hope to see even more of this work as the machines and software become a vital part of any small workshop.” 01293 402700 www.masterwood.com

Torches and fans by Makita

Makita’s twin 18V LXT angle drill

Two new Makita portable fans have been introduced in response to customer demand for rugged, high performance fans of compact size. Ideal for the workshop, home or office, these neat, space-saving fans measure just 180mm in diameter but still create a significant but comfortable air speed. The CF101DZ 12VMax Portable Fan joins the ever expanding and highly popular CXT range and can be powered by AC mains power, or by DC battery operation using a Makita CXT battery. These high performance bodyonly machines have a screw hole for mounting onto a tripod, an adjustable hanging hook, and a fan head which can be conveniently angled up/down and left/right. An off-timer switch with LED display allows three settings of one, two and four hours of output. The DCF102Z model also features a release button for vertical angle adjustment of the fan head. The CF101DZ and DCF102Z portable fans weigh in at diminutive maximum weights of 1.7 and 2kg.

Makita has launched its first cordless twin 18V LXT brushless angle drill featuring all the power and performance of a mains machine whilst benefiting from the freedom and manoeuvrability that only a battery powered tool can provide. The mighty DDA460ZK is powered by two Makita 18V LXT Lithium-Ion batteries giving 36V power from the Brushless motor which not only massively extends runtime but substantially increases power. This new angle drill has a noload speed of up to 1400rpm in Hi mode and 350rpm in Lo with variable speed control by trigger

Two new LED torches have also been added to the range, the DML808 LXT and ML105 CXT. The new DML808 is compatible with both 14.4V and 18V lithium-ion batteries – the same batteries that power your Makita power tools. By simply twisting the torch head the beam can be usefully adjusted from wide to narrow. The ML105 can be powered by Makita’s CXT 12V Max slide batteries. The LED provides a sharp, round spotlight and the pivoting torch head has 12 positions with positive stops from 60°-110°. The aluminium flashlight head is designed for increased durability and the multi-faceted reflector controls the direction and spread of the light. www.makitauk.com

Check out the video at https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=ECTpcx7JzGI Available in 5m lengths, the blade is graduated in mm and inches, is accurate to EC Class II and housed in a tough ABS case with a positive action slide lock brake, belt clip and zeroing end hook. www.fisco.co.uk

action. This body only machine features an electric brake and the soft start function. This accelerates the motor into action even if the trigger is pulled fully home from Off. In drilling mode soft start reduces the sudden torque load on start up. In operation the torque limiter will cut the motor drive should the drill bit snag, so providing further operator protection. The front handle can be installed in any position within 0-112.5° for maximum user comfort, control and accessibility in confined spaces. www.makitauk.com

The innovative Forescolor, which combines the flexibility of wood with the brightness of colour, has taken panel design to the next level.

It is an evolution of MDF offering the additional benefits of moisture resistance, non-toxicity and tool friendliness for a multitude of applications in the domestic, hospitality, retail, commercial, education and public sectors. Maintaining a consistent colour all the way through, Forescolor’s superior machining capabilities allow boards to be laser cut into intricate, bespoke designs or routered to include text or logos, with a precision finish. Les Murray, regional director at IDS, says: “Forescolor is a high-performance, versatile fibre board and we are delighted to bring its manufacturing and cost benefits to our customers. Woodgrains – get creative Interior furniture design in recent years has all been about colour, greys in particular, as we know. Now this trend has extended into woodgrains with popular choices either being grey in tone or suitable partners for the grey solid colours. Renolit introduces a number of woodgrain decors from their most recent 3D thermoformable film introductions and show how they can be combined with new, classic and bold modern solid colours to provide interior designers with a new array of possibilities. Rockford Hickory Hickory wood in nature displays characteristics of being very hard, firm, dense and shock resistant. Reproduced by Renolit as a 3D thermoformable film, the light, medium and dark colour variations represent this combination of strength, toughness, and hardness. The depth of the design is created by light pores and contrasting cathedrals. Variation of pattern and colour emphasizes the designs’ natural beauty.

Kite’s new eco-friendly paper bubble wrap Kite’s latest product addition is paper bubble wrap, a 100% recyclable alternative for traditional polyethylene bubble wrap. Companies can now protect products and the environment by implementing this eco-friendly void fill approach in packing operations. When it comes to minimising damages in transit and storage, the internal protection plays a crucial part in the packing process, so much so that sometimes, unfortunately, green initiatives can take a back seat. With paper bubble wrap, companies can accommodate both objectives. The product offers an environmentally-friendly substitute in protective packaging without compromising on quality. It features deep indentations that provide shock-absorbing protection against external impact damage and it is available in a variety of sizes to fit individual requirements of different businesses. The new environmentally-friendly product ensures reliable cushioning throughout transit and its recyclable qualities offer an end-of-life, eco-friendly solution to counteract plastic waste. www.kitepackaging.co.uk

Kite adds hygienic gusseted bags to the mix The packaging technologists at Kite Packaging have expanded the company’s packing range by introducing two new packing agents to its online portfolio. When it comes to the pick and pack process, businesses often have the right external box protection but are still in need of an internal layer of protection. Kite’s new blue-tint gusseted bags are ideal for keeping contents clean and protected from outside contamination. The new, gusseted liners are also waterproof, making them highly effective for agricultural, mechanical, food and industrial applications and their strong blend of polythene offers the ultimate hygienic protection. www.kitepackaging.co.uk

Striking use of prime Walnut to spectacular effect James Latham recently supplied 5m3 of super prime grade Walnut to one of its customers who have used it to create some spectacular doors as well as privacy screening for an outstanding, high-specification residential property in Lancashire. The project has seen twenty-three 2.7m high doors manufactured and installed by specialist bespoke hand-crafted joinery company, Woodside Designs of Blackpool. Eleven of the doors are handle-less, incorporating grooves for handles, plus there are also 3D-hinges, and drop-down seals as well as top-end Swiss and German ironmongery throughout.

“The colour of super prime solid Walnut boasts a unique earthy brown hue which varies between cinnamon and chocolate and it also finishes beautifully, giving an excellent decorative appearance due to its outstanding grain, colour and pattern. This coupled with the bespoke workmanship on both the doors and screens have produced an outstanding interior space.”

According to the company, James Latham’s range of North American hardwoods is second to none. As well as super-prime grade Walnut, the company offers American White Oak, Cherry, Maple, Ash and Tulipwood, all available directly from stock via its eight-strong nationwide network of timber depots. www.lathamtimber.co.uk

In addition, a breath-taking, ‘living’ privacy screen has been created and framed in super prime Walnut which features lush foliage and dense greenery, invoking an instant calm and tranquil atmosphere whilst simultaneously cleansing the air of toxins. Carl Hulme, timber sales representative for James Latham Leeds, who supplied the timber comments: “This project is simply stunning. The doors look amazing and the living privacy screen makes a real statement with the abundant greenery offering a stark contrast to the clean white walls.

The W Exhibition and Elements Show 2018:

The Review With the biggest footprint and the largest number of exhibitors to date, this year’s W Exhibition and sister show, Elements, have been hailed a huge success by visitors and exhibitors alike. With 9200 people attending the UK’s only woodworking machinery and materials exhibition and dedicated furniture components show, organisers have seen a 4% increase in visitor numbers this year. This, along with a large number of overseas visitors from Europe and further afield, has confirmed the show’s status as being a must-attend event for the furniture design and manufacturing industry. The four-day event, which will move to halls 18, 19 and 20 in 2020, due to increased demand in stand space, saw a plethora of new products being introduced at the show, including the UK debut of Homag’s intuitive Mouldteq M-300 planer moulder, Daltons Wadkin’s new generation Kimla BPF2131 CNC, Advanced Machinery Services’ new Wadkin Bursgreen WB 600 AngleX automatic crosscutting machine and Intelligent Fixing’s unique self-clamping component connector. This year, there was a distinct shift towards intelligent machinery, with new concepts being introduced for today’s furniture manufacturing industry. SCM UK’s Digital Hub and Maestro Digital Systems – which have been created in response to the latest industry 4.0 requirements – drew in the crowds as it showed a new, smart approach to manufacturing. Whilst Italian machinery manufacturer, Biesse, focused on its automated, interconnected production concept Automaction. The Viet Opera R sanding system – one of several machines in the range designed to increase automation and overall equipment efficiency (OEE) – also won an Elements of Innovation Gold Award at the show. Felder’s very latest H80 CNC nesting machine with fully automatic loading and unloading of up to 100 boards at a time and full nesting capabilities in three and four axes, made its debut at the show and proved popular with small- to medium-sized manufacturers, while TM

Pages.indd 43

Machinery’s new retrofitable Striebig optimisation programme, which cleverly connects to your WiFi, has been designed to increase productivity and reduce waste when cutting panels to size. Live machinery demonstrations, interactive spray booths and virtual reality tours were also in abundance at the show, with stands finding unique ways to promote their latest product offering. Competitions and daily challenges were also order of the day for many with Quin Global UK’s nail-biting L12 Curve Challenge proving a huge hit with visitors, as they attempted to make the tightest curve possible using its L12 adhesive on bendy plywood. There was also a number of interactive stands this year, as exhibitors set out to entice visitors to explore the latest innovations for themselves. From Blum’s very own Blum Cinema – complete with popcorn – which featured a movie on the company’s training services, support software and assembly devices, to ArtiCAD’s unique virtual reality tour, that transported you into a fullyequipped 3D kitchen. In a bid to educate users on everything from the initial design to construction of a kitchen, visitors were offered new and exciting ways to learn about the products on offer. Daltons Wadkin’s stand also stood out with its back-to-nature theme and machine wrapping. Visitors were also free to explore the exhibition’s growing number of interactive zones. The Education Zone, which was introduced for the first time at the show, offered visitors a unique opportunity to join group workshops and book one-on-one sessions with industry experts. The Elements of Innovation Awards, gave visitors an opportunity to see the most ground-breaking products to enter the UK market up close – and gave their manufacturers the recognition they deserved. The show’s official charity, Help for Heroes, also had its most successful show to date.

With help from the Help for Heroes bear and exhibitors at the show – including Masterwood, which provided one of the dinosaurs made on a Masterwood nesting machine as a raffle prize – the charity raised over £1200, which will help to fund much needed woodworking shops and recovery centres around the UK. Lisa Campagnola, event director for Elements and the W Exhibition says: “We are very pleased with the success our exhibitors have had at this year’s shows. It’s also been great to see increased visitor numbers and a wider visitor audience, as we’ve been committed to creating two shows that truly benefit the UK’s furniture design and manufacturing industries. “We’ve also welcomed a larger number of overseas visitors, which is due in part to the number of European companies we’ve had join the exhibitor line-up this year. The new interactive visitor features have been a great addition and the support for the brand new Education Zone has been overwhelming, as we – and our industry partners - continue to champion the industry’s future. “We’re also pleased to announce that both the W Exhibition and Elements will be moving to halls 18, 19 and 20 in 2020 to make room for even more exhibitors. Re-booking has been phenomenal, with many companies increasing their stand size and many new companies wishing to exhibit. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in the W Exhibition and Elements and I look forward to welcoming the industry again to the Birmingham NEC in 2020.” Here’s what the W Exhibition and Elements exhibitors and visitors thought of the show. The W Exhibition and Elements 2020 will be taking place from the 27th-30th September at the NEC, Birmingham. www.wexhibition.co.uk

CDUK and Corian: a foundation of strength and innovation Lasting strength is based on firm foundations. This applies as much to a business as to a product or a particular design and in this respect both Corian and its exclusive UK and Ireland distributor, CDUK, has a well-earned reputation for reliability – especially with an offering that is renowned for its unrivalled combination of quality, adaptability, skill and experience. The changing nature of the market can throw up temporary challenges – such as a rush of demand for the most successful of innovations – however, premium products and services will always work hard to keep pace. At the W Exhibition, CDUK had the pleasure of demonstrating the breadth of pioneering properties for which Corian is famed, whilst also showing the numerous reasons why it is the solid surface partner of choice. The new colours, new products, new solutions and new techniques of Corian are matched by CDUK’s time-honoured values of dependable support, superior training, responsive supply and extensive stock-holding. On CDUK’s stand, experts were on hand to demonstrate techniques such as S-Join templates ideal for use with the highly popular veined colours, plus the most effective way to create hob cut-outs. The simplicity of repairing a Corian worktop was also demonstrated, with the audience unable to identify the inconspicuous mend upon completion. A key feature of the stand brought together not only the best in fabrication skills, but all that is fresh, helpful and inspiring in the world of Corian. A bespoke unit made by Cutting Edge showed everything from Corian Solid Surface with Resilience Technology to the wireless recharging of devices – with engraved logos to identify the charging locations. The beauty of backlit panels was revealed through the elegant new Corian Design logo, as was the mastery of thermoforming, with wave textures applied to both ends of the unit.

A triple sink unit, fabricated by Whitehall Fabrications, was also displayed – showing the two new Axix sink colours, Copper and Gunmetal, from The 1810 Company – exclusively available from CDUK from November. Axix sinks are a clever solution that allow for a robust and straightforward method of seamlessly combining a metal undermount sink with Corian. The sinks were displayed within a White Onyx

worktop, featuring a striking shark nose edge profile, and were complemented by matching taps. As MD Gary Baker comments: “W Exhibition gave us the opportunity to introduce and remind visitors of everything that CDUK has to offer, whilst also reaffirming the enduring values that have kept us at the leading edge of the solid surface market for nearly 40 years.” www.cdukltd.co.uk

Ostermann at the W Exhibition, Elements – edging diversity and furniture products At the W Exhibiton, Elements, in Birmingham, Ostermann once again showed its large range of edgings. This was supplemented with products from the extensive selection of furniture surfaces, technical profiles and furniture handles. As always, the Ostermann experts were busy carrying out live demonstrations at the mobile edgebanding station, drawing a lot of attention from customers and interested visitors. From carpenters for carpenters – this was the Ostermann motto for the W Exhibition and Elements show in Birmingham. The Ostermann experts are well versed in many different topics concerning furniture construction: from the different zero-joint technologies, the various adhesives and cleaners, to small tips and tricks for everyday work in the workshop. At the Ostermann stand, the experts were happy to pass on their expertise to a willing audience. The trade fair has been a great experience for the Ostermann UK team. Along with many new customers, it was good to see a lot of well-known faces, as well. Edging trends Concrete surfaces continue their triumphant advance into the furniture world. The industrial look remains in high demand. For the perfect finish on the edge, Ostermann offers numerous ABS edges in concrete look. Likewise, now in

fashion are realistic material reproductions in rust, stone or wood optics. With the latter, the trend is increasingly towards Nordic woods, especially pine. On the clearly designed edging walls visitors could see a comprehensive overview of the wide range of the Ostermann edging world. Exclusive furniture surfaces Look, feel, smell… More and more surfaces do not only impress with their innovative optics, but also with additional sensory sensations, such as an especially realistic or extraordinary feel. The new Forbo linoleum surfaces answer this trend, as they have a lot to offer when it comes to haptics. Making its debut on the stand was Ostermann’s entry, and finalist, for the Elements of Innovation award, Almwiese. Almwiese has a slightly scented surface made of alpine grasses and flowers that gives commercial or private interiors a rare, natural and relaxing atmosphere. The grasses have been cut manually from alpine meadows, 1700m above sea level. The product consists of glued hay flower mixes with natural flax fibres used as a substrate. Furthermore, Ostermann has shown high-quality design surfaces from Sibu that will attract attention and inspire its customers to construct creative furniture for living areas, trade fairs and shopfitting. Last but not least Ostermann has presented the new RollBeton (concrete on a roll) and RollRost (rust on a roll) surfaces, with which carpenters/cabinetmakers can design furniture and interiors with a modern concrete or rust look.

Everything for creative interior design In addition to consumables, such as adhesives and cleaners, Ostermann supplies many other products for producing creative furniture. Check out the large selection of technical profiles and accessories, as well as the numerous product solutions for lighting applications for store and interior design. Once again, the W Exhibition and Elements event has been a huge success and it was a lot of fun for the Ostermann team working at the fair, meeting customers old and new. Certainly, the company’s experts will be a part of the fair again in 2020, and they are already looking forward to meeting you there. www.ostermann.eu

Back to black with Lamello

The Cabineo’s new black finish has been inspired by the growing trend for industrial living and urban interior design

Lamello’s unique one-piece cabinet fitting, the Cabineo, is now available in a sleek black finish. First seen at the UK’s only woodworking machinery and materials show, the W Exhibition earlier this month, the new version has been inspired by the growing trend for industrial living and urban interior design. The Swiss-made furniture connector – which is best known in the market as a more efficient alternative to standard cam and dowel fittings – offers significant advantages during production, transport and installation and has become a firm favourite with furniture designers and manufacturers looking for a quick, reliable and fuss-free wood and panel joining solution. The nifty design, which was originally launched last year, can be installed into a drilled or routed shape. It also requires no edge drilling, offers faster installation, greater reliability and a higher clamping force when compared with a traditional cam and dowel fitting. Moreover, Cabineo is the ultimate panel fixing for flat pack furniture as it can be fitted prior to packing without risk of damage during transit and makes in-home cabinet assembly extremely simple for joiners and consumers.

Pages.indd 48

The new finish – which was shortlisted for an Elements of Innovation Award at the W Exhibition – has also been cleverly designed without the need for additional cover caps. This allows each fitting to blend seamlessly into the background when working with dark materials. Alternatively, furniture designers can use the Cabineo’s new metallic cover cap range – which includes silver, nickel and dark steel – to create a unique style statement or to match aluminium or stainless steel fittings. Shaye Chatfield, Lamello area sales manager, adds: “The Cabineo has been a strong contender in the wood and panel joining market for over 12 months and Lamello’s new black housing shows the growing popularity of the product in the UK market. The new finish offers even more possibilities to furniture makers looking to create beautiful cabinetry with black- or anthracite-coloured interiors and can be applied to a multitude of applications in commercial and residential markets.” 0789 1025 646 s.chatfield@lamello.com www.lamello.com

Fantastic debut with Peanuts 1 and 2 the stars of Intelligent Fixings’ stand The anticipation and excitement at the Intelligent Fixings stand on day one of the W Exhibition and Elements Show was palpable – and the buzz around this young company’s innovative Peanut connecting system continued for the whole show. The impressive branding of the Intelligent Fixings stand was a prominent feature in the Elements area of the show. The streamlined and incredibly strong cabinets on its stand were all made using the Peanut system connectors. The popularity of the two raw base cabinets, also on the stand, was amazing. Visitors loved the fact that they could view and touch the Peanut in-situ, to see how strong and solid the construction was. As MD of Intelligent Fixings, Luke Thomson, states: “Visitors were wowed by how solid and rigid the joints were. Hundreds of visitors registered their interest in both Peanuts

1 and 2, with many placing pre-orders for starter packs which will be available from December.” Peanut 1, the self-clamping, single-component connector, and Peanut 2, the self-clamping invisible connector, had both been receiving positive attention since their soft-launch in July, but the company said they were ‘blown-away’ by the phenomenal interest shown for the products at the main launch at the show. “The demand for the Peanuts, post show, has been continuous and has lead the company to significantly increase their estimate of how many will be sold in the first year,” explains Luke. “The interest and enthusiasm to use the Peanut system from small joinery companies,

mass flat-pack producers to high-end furniture manufacturers was impressive. Many of the companies currently using cam and dowels are very keen to start using the revolutionary Peanut system.” Intelligent Fixings reports that the volume of visitors to the stand and throughout the show was testament to the impressive organisation and running of the event by Lisa Campagnola and her team. The company has already reserved its space in the new Elements hall for 2020, meanwhile, Intelligent Fixings can be seen at both Interzum and Ligna exhibitions in May next year. sales@intellifgentfixings.com www.intelligentfixings.com

A clean case for prime adhesives and effective processing from Jowat-Riepe team The W Exhibition is a firm fixture in the calendar every two years for Jowat UK and its partner, Riepe GmbH. This year’s event certainly didn’t disappoint with a great number of new and valued current customers visiting the team’s unified stand to obtain essential advice – and sometimes to just have a catch up. The Jowat Group a medium-sized, familyowned enterprise and is one of the world’s top adhesive manufacturers. Tradition and experience from almost 100 years of corporate development allow it to act as a leading company in technologies and innovations, in numerous markets and application areas. This ranking as an innovative leader is made possible by the commitment and competence of its employees, the adhesive experts who always find the perfect solution for Jowat’s customers. The company’s comprehensive range and latest innovative products mean that there is an edgebanding adhesive solution for every application and every machine. Riepe GmbH, based in Buende, Germany, develops and produces electronically controlled spraying systems for the woodworking industry together with the relevant chemical products. Prior to the introduction of Riepe, systems’ residues, such as glue residue on the workpiece, had to be removed manually, costing time and effort. The Riepe spraying systems, together with the chemical products, deliver the workpiece from the edge- and wood-processing machines in finish quality, directly to dispatch. Post processing is no longer required.

PUR adhesive for edgebanding is becoming ever more widespread due to its enhanced performance over traditional EVA technology – particularly where increased water- and heatresistance are required. Riepe technology becomes even more invaluable when processing PUR adhesives, and numerous edgebanding machinery manufacturers are now installing Riepe systems as standard on PUR machines. Jowat quality adhesive solutions coupled with the effective processing advantages of Riepe spray systems mean that customer edged products have the perfect bond and a ready to ship clean workpiece. 60 W Exhibition Review

It’s time for automaction Automaction is a new concept that supported Biesse’s participation at the W Exhibition, bringing innovation to manufacturing based on automated, interconnected production that will enable customers to obtain greater value from machines to increase efficiency, either within a specific process or in an entire factory. Visitors experienced this via a number of demonstrations that showed how increased automation can help improve Overall Equipment Efficiency (OEE), therefore allowing existing labour to add value to other parts of production. The Viet Opera R robotised sanding machine automates the hand sanding operation which offers greater sanding consistency and a higher continuity of output. There was also an unloading system utilising a collaborative robot that can also be used in many other applications. In addition, a Stream A edgebander and a W4 panel return system were combined to create a semi-automated cell, demonstrating the automated management of panels that can provide a significant increase in output and reduction in damages when compared to standard edgebander cells. These systems can handle large panels just as easily as small panels, therefore offering a flexible edgebanding solution for many markets. The impressive Brema Vektor 15 throughfeed machining centre includes a panel return system that allows the same panel entry/exit point and offers the ability to automatically process all six sides of a panel. This not only provides better utilisation of space, it also means that only one operator is required without any loss in productivity. Automating offloading processes is another way to help increase production capacity. The Rover K Flat Table CNC included an offloading table and sweeping/transfer arm that automatically ejects a processed charge of

Pages.indd 60

panels, allowing the operator to load a new sheet in masked time. As well as helping to increase capacity, it also allows greater utilisation of operators’ time while the nesting process takes place. In addition to the Twin Pusher system on the Selco WN6 beam saw that dramatically increases machine utilisation and output, the embedded software tool demonstrates that automation does not always have to be mechanical. The software guides the operator how best to sort the panels produced into stack locations that can be defined by next process, customer name, stock location etc. This enables faster and more efficient handling of finished components. Integrated into all the machines on show was Sophia, the Biesse IoT (internet of things) platform that offers a comprehensive overview of machine performance, with remote diagnostics, machine stoppage analysis and potential fault prediction that helps to increase machine availability. Sophia also sends automated notifications when maintenance

tasks or stoppages occur. The platform also includes Parts Sophia, an online e-parts system that can show live availability of parts and streamlines the quoting and ordering process for the customer. “Intelligent systems are connecting the world,” explains Robbie O’Neill, Biesse UK commercial director. “This allows businesses to adapt far quicker than ever before. This adaptation in our industry is done either by physical automation or connected facilities. “Either way this means a leaner process is required if you want to compete, let alone just protect your business. Biesse wants to help our customers transform and integrate into an Industry 4.0 environment and the W Exhibition was the first opportunity Biesse has had in the UK to demonstrate how we propose to do this together. “Biesse is not just a machinery supplier any more, we are a partner for our customers, helping them to get greater efficiency and therefore better value from their machines.” www.biesse.com

setting and touch screen control, and an Altendorf F45 sliding table panel saw. Classical equipment and the company’s engineering and manufacturing capability were represented by a Wadkin BRA radial arm cross cut saw and Phillipson 30in disc and vertical bobbin sanding machines, all built in the Daltons Wadkin workshops in Nottingham. Also highlighted by an individual display were the certificated operator training activities which constitute an increasingly important part of its business. As a PIABC quality-assured training organisation covering the whole of the UK and Ireland Daltons Wadkin offers both on-site and in-house training to suit individual customer requirements. Furthermore, Warren Handley, from the company’s ‘red team’ of highly experienced

machine operator trainers was asked by the organisers to present a series of talks during the exhibition regarding the need for training within the industry, the methods available, and the benefits to both employer and employee. Audience members benefited from a knowledgeable and incisive overview of the increasing requirement for safe working practices in today’s world. Palamatic’s show … … through the eyes of its new customer relations manager, Matt Bennison How was the W Exhibition for you? I’m Matt Bennison, I am customer relations and marketing manager at Palamatic. I personally haven’t attended this show since 2014 so I was very much looking forward to holding up the Palamatic flag and talking to as many attendees as possible. The show certainly pulled in a huge number of people and we have been able to connect with many new companies in need of help with manual handling problems. The most common problem that people wanted to talk about was how they were concerned that their operators were going to injure themselves whilst handling oversized loads, primarily jumbo boards and heavy doors. Concerns for employees requiring time off due to work-related injuries is something that any business fears – both for employee wellbeing and for lost production time.

Employers understand that a happy and healthy workforce is consistently more productive and that investment in systems that encourage this are not only smart but improve employee empowerment. Palamatic vacuum lifters keep employees safe at work. They remove unnecessary manual handling of large panels, boards and doors and allow one operator to lift your products, which means you can allocate resources more efficiently throughout your processes.

Palamatic vacuum lifting technology allows us to comfortably lift your jumbo boards, heavy fire doors and doors with cut-outs. We can lift up to 300kg and install a range of gantry systems to hang our lifters from. The most common is a swing jib which we size according your load/ weight requirements and working area. We can install H-style gantries that cover larger areas, cantilevered systems to work around your existing machinery and articulated jibs as well. We ensure that our systems fit neatly into your workspace and do not interfere with your existing processes but help them. Palamatic have installed well over 1000 vacuum lifters into small joineries and large multi-nationals in the UK alone. If you would like to look into what we can do for you, just give us a call or email and we can arrange a no obligation, free site visit and quotation. 01246 452054 sales@palamatic.com

Weinig and Holz-Her: technology triumphs at the W Exhibition

At the W Exhibition this year, Weinig – the technology leader in standard machines for planing and profiling, and sister company Holz-Her – the high-quality panel processing machine specialist, showed their latest technology and innovations in solid wood and furniture production. Spread across three very busy stands, Weinig offered something for everyone, from the hugely successful Word Search Cube Plus to the very affordable Powermat 700 Classic, as well as advanced technology as demonstrated by its Digital OptiControl and Moulder Master software. Malcolm Cuthbertson, managing director of Weinig UK, says: “The W Exhibition was a very successful show. We saw both existing customers and new ones considering their next production investment. Our long understanding of the changing needs of solid timber processing and partnership mentality makes all the difference.”

Pages.indd 68

Weinig’s ProMaster range of heavy duty CNC solutions offer almost unlimited possibilities in five-axis machining. Constructed for highly demanding work, the robust, solid and wellthought-out construction of Weinig’s ProMaster CNCs represent the latest in modern and application-friendly industrial design. For Holz-Her, its Nextec furniture solution was the show-stopper: a complete package comprising machine, and specially designed craftsman-friendly software. A few simple clicks and the push of a button, and the Nextec creates and labels each component for your selected cabinet. Manufacturers can hit the ground running without programming; choosing from up to 300 cabinets from Nextec’s intuitive Cabinet Select software, decide how many they want, select the material and connection hardware and you are ready to go. Modifying or customising any item in the library, or even adding your own cabinet is just

24/10/2018 15:26

69 as simple. The software is designed to enable people who are not skilled in programming to produce furniture, or even an entire kitchen, easily and quickly, and you can start manufacture from the first day the machine arrives. A key feature in making panel processing more efficient is Holz-Her’s DirectCut. This lasersupported high-speed cutting can turn material remnants into valuable furniture components. The optional two-line laser enables an operator to easily cut one-off pieces to a chosen size, without any programming. Operating just like an automated panel saw, DirectCut gives genuine value to otherwise wasted off-cuts. DirectCut enables useful table saw functions, potentially saving precious floor space and costs. Holz-Her’s zero glue line solutions: without the hassle From the smallest Holz-Her edgebander to its largest production solution, each comes with Holz-Her’s unique and award-winning Glu Jet system as standard, catering for every size and type of business. Be it high gloss or solid wood edging, the system is both flexible and versatile and comes with a three year warranty. Guaranteed glue line management. This is industrial technology for all – you can now process PUR glue as standard, but without the hassle. As the benchmark for professional

cabinetmakers, most manufacturers would use PUR, but not all machinery can cope with it. With the Glu Jet ready to use in under four minutes with EVA or PUR, Holz-Her’s unique system has proved time and time again that it is the right solution for any edgebanding requirements. With the new Holz-Her Lumina series comes the option for the LTronic system – the laser edging unit from Holz-Her unbeatable in terms of speed and cost efficiency. The NIR (Near Infrared Radiation) module in Holz-Her’s LTronic unit transfers heat energy quickly and precisely to the specific point required making it ideal for activation of function layers on laser edging. Available in edge heights up to 45mm, the modules are ready to use as soon as you switch them on – there is no heat-up time or any heatup phases during the machining process. The

Pages.indd 69

complete system operates absolutely silently; a huge advantage over noisy costly-to-run hot air systems. At the W Exhibition, Holz-Her also demonstrated its incredibly strong and highly in demand Sector 1255 wall saw, and the company demonstrated its classical machines expertise with its market leading partner Hofmann. Every machine from the Weinig Group comes with reliability, quality assurance, and after-sales customer support as standard. 70 W Exhibition Review

Record sales and leads for Cabinet Vision and Alphacam at the W Exhibition

“How can your products make my business more productive and efficient?” and “How can your software tools help me to fully exploit my significant investment in CNC equipment?” Those were just two of the questions woodworking companies asked Vero Software at the W Exhibition. And casework manufacturers wanted to know how to bridge the gap between design and manufacture, which have been separate from each other in the past. With Alphacam’s powerful automation and nesting functionality, answering those first two questions, and Cabinet Vision’s Screen-ToMachine module, closes the loop between sales and manufacture for casework manufacturers. Visitors to the show also saw first-hand the software in action, driving a variety of CNC machine tools on machinery suppliers’ stands. During the four days of the W Exhibition, Cabinet Vision and Alphacam between them closed many sales, and gained hundreds of strong leads, many of which were looking to invest in the software in the short to medium term. Michael Pettit, EMEA sales manager for Cabinet Vision and Alphacam, says visitors were particularly interested in Alphacam’s new nesting engine, unveiled in the 2018 R2 release, which tests show delivers significant improvements in material yield. “Using proprietary technology to deliver ‘best in class’ geometry and toolpath optimisation, the nesting engine provides faster

Pages.indd 70

calculation times, along with improved feedback and graphics,” says Michael. “Customers are also moving away from having to program individual parts for their CNC production, and were impressed when they saw demonstrations showing how Alphacam’s latest automation tools in Automation Manager can reduce programming time by several days each week.” Cabinet Vision demonstrated its latest release, which includes all-new photo rendering technology that provides a considerable enhancement in rendering capabilities from previous versions. “It now gives manufacturers almost photo-like images which they can use as a sales tool to show their customers exactly

what the products will look like in situ,” says Michael. And Cabinet Vision also partners with a number of machine tool suppliers, providing a total machine and software solution. In conclusion, Michael Pettit says: “The W Exhibition gave us the opportunity to meet new customers and gain significant leads. Also, it was good to catch up with existing customers, many who are our customers for many years and hear their stories about how our marketleading solutions for the woodworking industry have driven productivity and profitability in their businesses.” www.cabinetvision.com www.alphacam.com

72 W Exhibition Review

Kündig’s positive W Exhibtion The range of wide-belt and edge-sanding machines from Kündig UK on display at W Exhibition proved to be exceptionally popular with visitors. Wide-belt sanders were represented by both the Premium and Brilliant ranges. All Kündig wide-belt sanders are constant passline machines, with the sanding group raising and lowering to the desired thickness rather than the workpiece. This has been quoted by many companies interviewed by this magazine, as well as visitors to Kündig’s stand at W Exhibition, as a particular advantage. The sanders are available in working widths of 1100mm, 1350mm and 1600mm. The Premium range can be supplied with one to three sanding belts. The first head is a calibration roller, and in a two-head machine, such as that on display at W Exhibition, the second head was a sanding pad for joinery, with an electronic sanding pad for joinery and veneers available as an option. The Kündig Premium sanders have a host of options to offer even more versatility, including combinations of rollers and pads as well as the option of a cutterblock, for jointed panels where there are strong glue lines. The Brilliant range of Kündig sanders (yes, Brilliant is the model name!) offer even more options. In addition to the head configurations available for the Premium range, there are additional options for electronic sanding pads for the sanding of veneers and higher sensitivity electronic sanding pads for the sanding of lacquers. Machines can be provided with multiple sanding heads as well as top and bottom sanding line. At least one of the sanding heads in a Brilliant machine is positioned at an oblique angle, usually the last one. Oblique sanding, developed by Kündig, has been shown by Kündig to produce an exceptionally high quality finish, and this is again reflected in the comments that companies using these sanders have provided to this magazine. Sanding belts are of course always supplied to end users in perfect condition, but over time tiny flaws may develop. These can be transferred to the workpiece in the same way that track lines used to appear on fax machines. By orienting the oblique sanding head at a slight angle to the other heads, so it is not perpendicular to the direction of travel, the oblique sanding method obviates this problem. With surfaces such as veneers and lacquers, this can be a significant advantage. “We were joined by Thomas Tenburg from Kündig (Germany) who performed a number of demonstrations throughout the show,” says Kündig UK’s Carl O’Meara. “The part where we have a purposely damaged sanding belt and show the difference between traditional straight line sanding – which shows the defect – as opposed to oblique sanding giving a perfect finish, always amazes people, especially those

Pages.indd 72

that have a constant struggle with their existing straight line sanders.” Also popular were the edge sanders, represented on the stand by the Uniq model. These edge sanding machines are used both for solid wood and veneered edges. The oscillation of the abrasive is programmable to optimise the use of the sanding belt and the whole sanding unit can tilt allowing the sanding of a bevel edge whilst keeping the workpiece flat on the cast iron table. The Uniq model comes with many advantages. A heavy cast iron work table is provided on one side for solid wood sanding, and a similar table is provided for veneer sanding on the other side, the two tables being stepped in height to allow both sides to be worked simultaneously whilst using different parts of the abrasive. Motorised height adjustment and tilting of the abrasive belt is provided as standard, therefore no adjustment of the working table is required. Mechanical inclination of up to 45° without resetting of the tables, a patented feature, is included as standard. The oscillation stroke is programmable from 10 to 90mm. Dust

extraction is provided by two suction caps. The belt width is 150-200mm, and the belt length is 2000mm. The working level is approximately 830mm on the solid sanding side and 900mm on the veneer sanding side. The floor space required for the Uniq model is 1150 x 800mm. “The edge sanders have always been met with a warm welcome into any workshop with a common report being that it ends up being one of the most used machines,” says Carl. “In particular, we are seeing an increase of sales of the Uniq-S which has an integrated feed system and therefore brings automation to what is otherwise a time-consuming and somewhat tedious process.” Carl concludes: “It is always a pleasure to greet existing users and meet potential new users alike. Several customers commented on how heavily built and easy to use our machines are and for those who saw the Brilliant in action, they were totally amazed at the finish, even using a purposely damaged sanding belt.” 0845 833 0565 sales@kundig.co.uk

Masterwood at the W Exhibition After many months of hard work and organisation the 2018 W Exhibition has been and gone for another 24 months. Masterwood GB has said it would like to thank everyone who made it possible, including Dimensions, Fercell, Print Monster and all our dedicated staff and iyd technicians. Masterwood GB managing director, Dave Kennard: “Our biggest thanks go to all those who visited the stand to look at new machines and software, plus the many existing Masterwood customers who came along to tell us how their CNCs are still working every week, even though some of these machines are now over 20 years old. Masterwood: built to last.” The new Masterwood Made In Italy look was reflected on the stand with clear viewing panels allowing great views of the machine demonstrations from all angles. Featured on the stand was a Project 485L, a full five-axis pod and rail CNC which was producing a Masterwood Trophy with intricate carvings of the world engraved along with a dedication to Birmingham. This showed the delicate and smooth movements of the five-axis to its full potential and drew in a good crowd of viewers each time it was running. “Accompanying the five-axxis CNC was an MW1538M, a heavy-duty nesting machine, which was running a nested ‘dinosaur’. The finished product became quite the centre of attraction, and once our technicians found the correct way to assemble the dinosaur, it was in great demand. The machining showed how intricate and small parts could be machined to high accuracy so that each piece slid together with the correct fix,” explains Dave.

“Finally, we had a Project TF100-2 CNC drilling machine on the stand. This was fitted with a full vertical and horizontal drilling head, plus a router with automatic tool changing. Various demonstrations were run on this machine showing the full range of possible operations of drilling and routering. The most popular demonstration was the picture panels that were vee-carved to look like famous landmarks or film stars. These were taken from photos and generated into machine program in a matter of minutes. “All the demonstrations were programmed with

Pages.indd 76

Master 3D, Masterwood’s own software for three-, four-, and five-axis machining, showing how quick and easy it is to turn complicated work into program for today’s, and yesterday’s, CNCs. “With so much demand for our ‘dinosaurs’ we decided to donate them to Help For Heroes who took donations and drew a winner each day. We thank everyone who donated to this great cause and trust that the winners have given the dinosaurs a good home. “What next for the W Exhibition 2020? Another World Cup?” www.masterwood.com

78 W Exhibition Review

Highly successful time for J & C O’Meara The W Exhibition proved to be highly successful for J & C O’Meara Woodworking Machinery. The constant stream of visitors to the stand included both existing customers and new potential customers, with a significant number of quality enquiries received during the four-day show. The new CNC range from AES proved particularly popular with visitors. On show was an example of the heavy duty, high speed nesting machine – the AES Extreme 1632 with a working area of 3200mm x 1600mm. This machine was also fitted with the HSD boring unit having 10 drills, a 12-position rotary tool-changer and automatic bed cleaning. The Extreme series is available with different bed sizes and as a fully automated Line machine. On display next to the Extreme was one of the AES Vega Evo machines which is ideal for both furniture makers and joinery companies. This machine is of pod and rail design, has an eightposition linear tool-changer and has a dedicated double ended horizontal router head to allow mortising for door locks and recessing for hinges. Again, the machine comes complete with Alphacam CAD/CAM software along with easy to use macros written by AES for easy one-off programming for processing cabinets and doors. The AES Extreme and Vega CNC machines are designed for optimum precision, productivity and reliability. All machines come complete with Osai CNC with 17in colour TFT screen and centralised lubrication. All axes are controlled by state-ofthe-art servo motors and the machines come with automatic tool offset. Easy referencing is available with reference pistons, and all machines come equipped with Alphacam CAD/CAM operating software (Alphacam Essential 2D). The X-axis speed and Y-axis speed are both 7m/min for rapid positioning. The Z-axis speed is 20m/min and the Z-axis travel is 200mm. The router motor is 9kW (12hp) and the router speed is 24,000rpm maximum. Options include increased vacuum; rotary toolchanger; auto labelling system with alignment; aggregate heads, and C axis head. “We knew the AES products would be well received but were still very surprised by the level of interest. On hand, we had technical representatives from AES along with our software and applications engineer to discuss customer requirements. We believe there is quite a gap in the market where AES fit perfectly,” says Carl O’Meara, managing director of J & C O’Meara. The established Genisis machines also attracted attention. As always, the panel saw range proved popular, especially the Genisis XC compact machine which has a sliding table length of 1900mm, offers saw blade tilt of 45°, a cutting width of 1000mm, a powerful 7.5hp motor and a maximum saw diameter of 400mm. The raise and lower of the blade is motorised and this machine is also available as a full size panel saw with 3200mm sliding table and 1300mm rip.

Pages.indd 78

Next to the Genisis XC was an example of the Genisis X2 which is a heavy-duty full-size machine having all motorised movements to the main blade and scorer and fitted with the optional digital displays to both cross cut fence and rip fence. This machine was also equipped with the control panel mounted at eye level and additional start/stop on the end of the sliding table. “The sliding table panel saw has always been one of our best-selling machines with around 150 installations of the Genisis machines throughout the UK. The machines are constructed to give long term accuracy and durability even in the busiest of workshops,” says Carl. Also popular and on display was an example of the traditional style briquette machine. “We introduced this series of briquetting machines over 10 years ago and have many installations throughout the UK,” says Carl. “There are 15 models in the range and from our experience, we can offer good sound advice to ensure the correct model is supplied for the correct application. Briquetters can be considered an essential for any workshop looking to manage the volume of its wood waste. They convert what is otherwise a waste product into a usable product reducing heating costs as well as landfill costs and can of course provide the source for an additional income.”

Installations have included a number of machines which have been sited directly below dust extraction units hence eliminating the handling of the waste. Other installations have included shopfit companies that were looking to compact MDF dust, recycling companies processing paper, cardboard as well as shavings and even a shoemaker who wanted to compact leather dust. All the machines are equipped with a Siemens colour touch screen and have sensor in the hopper to allow the machines to work in automatic mode. “The briquette machines have always been a steady selling machine and as with all machines, it is important to match the correct machine to the correct application. A number of points to consider include volume of waste being produced, the type of material to be processed, how the waste will be introduced into a machine and how the briquettes will be used,” says Carl. Summing up, Carl adds: “The W Exhibition was by far our busiest exhibition to date. We took orders at the show and have sold machines since the show. The level of interest and amount of enquiries have far surpassed any expectations and have been far greater than any other show.” 01704 893109 www.ukwoodworkingmachinery.co.uk

80 W Exhibition Review

‘Your Solution’ at W Exhibition – success for Homag at the NEC The W Exhibition show emphasised that 2018 has been a strong year for innovation within the woodworking industry. Homag certainly echoed this theme as it demonstrated its latest innovations in the heart of the exhibition at the NEC. Simon Brooks, managing director of Homag UK explains: “The W shows are always the highlight of the calendar for the UK woodworking industry and this year’s show was no different. The general vibe at the show was extremely positive and we are pleased to have taken a high number of orders. “The main message of the Homag stand this year was that we are a ‘one stop shop’ for all manufacturers. As shown on our stand, we are clearly positioned to offer complete production solutions, from start to finish, for entry level through to industrial-sized manufacturers. This year we demonstrated a range of solutions from design and manufacturing software suites through to production and finishing processes.” Operator guidance with the Sawteq B-300 beam saw Visitors to W Exhibition witnessed the Sawteq B-300 in action with intelliGuide, Homag’s interactive LED guidance system. The machine was fully operational on the stand, showing its impressive features as it received cutting patterns live from Homag’s optimiser software. Additionally, the system demonstrated its unique label generator for each panel which ensures parts are handled correctly and not lost within the production process. With complete user guidance, the machine also uses offcut management software to keep track of reusable parts as well as destacking software to tell the operator where to place each part.

Perfect edge solutions with Homag Homag’s edge banding technology is renowned for its production efficiencies and reliability. With a range that caters for all facility sizes, Homag presented several machines ranging from its compact Edgeteq S-200 all the way through to its industrial Edgeteq S-500. All machines were continuously running throughout the show, with visitors benefiting from professional demonstrations. In addition,

Homag provided live demonstrations of intelliGuide – the interactive LED guidance system

Pages.indd 80

Homag showed all its edge banding sealants with EVA, PO and PUR glue systems as well as its airTec invisible joint system. This year, Homag coupled its Edgeteq S-500 with a Loopteq O-600 vacuum controlled gantry handling system. This set-up is capable of efficiently producing one-off panels at high volumes and certainly proved to be a real showstopper on the stand. CNC automation – improved efficiencies and cost savings For high speed material processing, Homag demonstrated five of its CNC models for panel and joinery production. The Centateq N-500 compact nesting machine performed like a workhorse throughout the event. Ideal for the high speed nesting of MFC or MDF materials, it produced made-to-order children’s rocking chairs throughout the four day exhibition to raise funds for charity. The highly versatile and efficient gantry machine offers high precision in cutting out shaped workpieces during production straight from initial set-up. The Drillteq V-200 CNC processing centre continues to be a very popular choice for entry level manufacturing. The compact, flexible all-rounder is the ideal solution for drilling, trimming and grooving. Also demonstrated

24/10/2018 15:27

81 was the Drillteq D-500 which offers horizontal drilling and dowel insertion within one machine for production efficiency. Both Drillteq models proved very popular with visitors as Homag took multiple orders for both during the show. Joinery manufacturers were particularly impressed by the Centateq P-310 CNC processing centre. With its rigid construction and powerful five-axis head programmed by woodWOP, this powerhouse demonstrated its impressive joinery capabilities. Able to carry out a wide range of tasks, it produced door and window components throughout the show. The Cabteq T-200 automatic carcass clamp demonstrated how quick and flexible cabinet assembly can be using Homag’s unique carcass recognition system. The T-200 can be used as a stand-alone machine or as part of an automated assembly line.

Panel and joinery machinery produced rocking chairs live on the stand to raise money for charity

A UK launch at W Exhibition – Mouldteq M-300 Live at W Exhibition, Homag launched its new Mouldteq M-300 four sided planer moulder to the UK market. The launch proved successful as the model received positive feedback with a high volume of enquiries. Homag has taken what is considered a very traditional piece of machinery and created a solution that combines state-of-the-art technology with solid mechanical engineering. It joins Homag’s range of moulders which are available with five to eight heads as required. Feedback from the show was that visitors were impressed with Homag’s strengthened joinery production portfolio. Complete finishing solutions from Homag The Sandteq W-200 is a high performance widebelt sanding machine which produces a first class surface finish within a compact footprint. The machine impressed visitors with its versatility as it efficiently calibrated solid wood components, finished sanded veneered parts and de-nibbed lacquered panels to a high finish. Completing the finishing range at W Exhibition was the Sprayteq S-100, an entry level, costeffective automatic throughfeed spraying machine. The machine proved extremely popular with visitors who were looking for a way to automate their spraying processes at a very affordable price point. A high number

Visitors experienced Homag’s autonomous production through a virtual reality factory

Pages.indd 81

Several edge banding machines and sealants were on show including airTec for invisible joints

of enquiries were taken for the spray machine which is one of many models available from Homag for automated painting and lacquering. Virtual autonomous production – a first at W Exhibition A world first at W Exhibition, Homag presented its autonomous production capabilities with a Virtual Reality (VR) presentation. Using a VR headset, visitors were able to immerse themselves into the world of high tech production. Homag created a virtual factory which was completely automated from start to finish. This was a true representation of a Homag installation using AGVs and robotic handling to transport workpieces between machinery during the production process and automatically fed and de-stack finished parts. Innovative digital solutions from Homag As well as the latest machinery, Homag demonstrated its leading range of innovative software solutions. At the heart of this is its digital platform, tapio. The digital solution makes networked production even more accessible to all workshops, and visitors at W Exhibition were impressed with the high level of information available through its live machine updates. Providing real time updates across the whole facility, it allows manufacturers to maximise machine performance.

In addition to its impressive machinery, Homag demonstrated its latest software which simplifies the production process. W Exhibition operatives showed its range of products including woodWOP 7.1 and woodWOP CAM plug-in for efficient CNC production. Visitors also explored woodCAD|CAM 2018 for furnishing presentation and MagiCut optimisation software for panel processing. A big ‘Thank You’ from Homag Simon Brooks concludes: “W Exhibition was a fantastic show and I’d like to thank everyone who placed an order with us or enquired about a product during the event. It was great to see so many first-time buyers, ranging from entry level through to high end production, at the show. “Overall, it was an extremely successful event for Homag both in terms of number of orders taken as well as feedback received from visitors. Customers were impressed by both the innovative technology on show and the large number of demonstrations going on throughout the four day exhibition. “The VR headset certainly got the crowds excited and visitors were surprised at not only the capabilities of Homag’s software solutions but also how simple it is to integrate them into their businesses. Overall, the show was a tremendous success and we look forward to the next event.” www.homag.com

Getting smarter with stairs Software-generated 3D design helps architects, interior designers and stair manufacturers to inspire customers with detailed models that perfectly encapsulate clients’ ideas and plans. Sarah Rigby of Elecosoft looks at some of the benefits of using 3D design software, like Staircon, in the planning process. “While staircases are a significant feature in a structure, they are heavily impacted by their surroundings,” explains Sarah. “It is a tricky part of the design to modify if the overall plan alters. This requires several skills and a thorough technical understanding of the whole building process. Stairs may seem commonplace and straightforward but to create and install them flawlessly is a work of brilliance. Designing them is like solving a 3D puzzle.

Pages.indd 82

“Customers tell us the benefits of using Staircon to design staircases are manifold and proven early in the conceptual process. It provides the best possible support for simplified and cost-effective construction, facilitating the fast creation of standard stair shapes as well as flexible design capabilities for more advanced structures,” says Sarah. “Modifications to construction plans happen all the time, often requiring a re-design of the staircase. Tweaking a stair-build, once a timeconsuming process requiring a high level of skill, is now a stress-free adjustment, all thanks to the availability of CAD/CAM software. “You can tread out the bottom part of a flight, add to the top landing, enhance a winder and do all the modifications which used to require a calculator and a sketchpad. The 3D visualisation

gives a detailed and immediate understanding of what the finished staircase will look like. “With 3D design, a staircase structure is easier to understand and envisage. The designs are not only available to view on a computer screen but also phones or tablets using various apps and website. The customer could look at them and even directly participate in creating a bespoke staircase.” Sarah concludes: “Designing stairs may seem an overwhelming prospect, but with technology, it’s more manageable. Stair design will keep on evolving and new production methods and modern technology will advance innovations further.” www.elecosoft.com/staircon

Machines by Goldcrest – by fabricators, for fabricators Furntiure & Joinery Production talks to Charles Slowikowski, managing director of Machines at Goldcrest. Charles we noticed you were present at the latest W18 exhibition. Can you give us a feedback – how did you find it? To be honest, it was our first woodworking exhibition as we didn’t manage to be there in 2016. I have to admit it was a smashing success, almost a hundred leads, very interested clients literally placing orders on the show. I knew our machines were great and priced reasonably, but I didn’t expect such a positive feedback. Why do you think you’ve got so many leads and interested clients? I think the major factor in manufacturing and selling the woodworking machines, among others, is that I’m personally a joiner with 12 years’ practical experience. I have a very good connection with the clients as not only do we know our products but we can also advise what exactly they may need to do to

achieve particular effect – we speak the same language if I can be very precise. The last factor not to be missed is we try to be 20-30% cheaper than our competition by really applying lean principles in our business – this means cutting production costs, a lack of shiny new offices, being very careful with our overheads. In the end, the price has to be right and it seems our approach works. From what I saw, your main products are vacuum membrane presses and CNC routers In essence yes, but we have plenty more machines to serve woodworkers, automotive interiors firms and ad agencies, such as edgebanders, veneers stitchers and so forth. Vacuum pressing is our speciality and for the last four years we have been using our presses in our joinery production – so there are almost no secrets in that department. The presses start from just £4000, and full size bed models at 3000mm long with infrared heating costs £8000. As for CNC routers, we also know from our own experience that not every company has £40-60K for a new CNC machine! That’s why we are serving smaller firms. We prefer not to sell as the cheapest and add another 80% on for options. From us they can purchase a fullyequipped CNC for less than £10K – or one with ATC, servos etc, below £20K. I don’t think you can fault those prices when the quality of the machine is from the top shelf. What are your plans for 2019? We are moving strongly to be very visible in the UK machinery market. We are constantly adding

Pages.indd 86

new requests to our machines as we listen to our clients’ suggestions. For example, we are designing a new vacuum press for automotive interiors to speed up their production – and from what we see, it can easily be used in the joinery market. Also, we are developing new options for our CNC routers and shortly adding five axis ones and also foam cutters. The final thing to mention is that we will be distributing a major player in the CNC sewing and embroidery market as we receive a lot of enquires from the interior fit-out firms, beds and headboards manufacturers and from the automotive sector. Suffice to say, we have quite a busy 2019 planned, watch this space! Charles, thank you very much and we hope your plans will unfold as you wish. Thank you very much and huge thanks to our clients for showing us their trust. www.machinesbygoldcrest.co.uk

90 W Exhibition Review

Another top showing by Schelling UK Schelling UK Ltd enjoyed yet another successful year at the W Exhibition, on display were the Schelling fh4 cut-to-size saw complete with a Barbaric LCV feeding system, a Votecs shredder with industrial inline Magnet for metal, ducting by Norduct and a filter by Modesta. According to the company, visitors to the Schelling UK stand were impressed by the Barbaric LCV feeding system, which displayed smooth, fast and easy feeding directly into the Schelling fh4. The Barbaric feeder demonstrated how it can load either single sheets in longitudinal or head cut positions straight onto the roller table of the fh4, then push the book or single sheet up against the aligners in the rollertable to then proceed automatically with the cutting pattern. The number of boards and their loading direction are easily selected from the cutting patterns created by Schelling HPO optimisation on the Schelling FH4 saw control of the machine. The Barbaric LCV feeding system, which is

renowned for offering custom-made systems built with simple yet high-quality components, also showed off simple operation and seamless linking to the Schelling Software. Other benefits of this system include low-space requirements for those with restricted space, and physical relief on production workers due to the automated nature of the feeder. Schelling also showed off Votecs’ EZ 6/1 shredder which is unique in the industry due to its exclusive features for veneer shredding. Special features of the Votecs EZ 6/1 include: – Segmented floors – Special cutting knives – Veneer adapted rotor speeds – Special screen for veneer shredding Of course the main event at the Schelling UK stand was the display put on by the Schelling fh4 cut-to-size saw. As with all of Schelling’s machines, the fh4 maintains the highest precision possible over the entire service life, plus it has the highest level of automation in its class. At the show Schelling was proud to show

off how this saw offers maximum precision alongside speed and flexibility, to process cuts of both individual and multiple panels. Visitors to the stand watched the impressive demonstration of the saw’s varied automatic settings and automatically monitored functions, and were shown a few of the special features of the saw with autospeed and double side aligner/ dual strip aligner. The dual strip aligners (one before and one after the saw line) remain on the material during the cut to ensure maximum angular precision. The alignment force, along with various other saw settings, adjusts automatically to the material thickness or package height with the aid of a frequency converter, meaning even thin panel strips can be cut and aligned with high precision. SCM – an innovation leader at the W Exhibition

SCM celebrates the latest edition of the W Exhibition with big figures, international attendance, innovative technologies and highly specialised training. The innovative Italian Group, a long-standing, reliable partner for the entire woodworking industry, was one of the main attractions at the event held at Birmingham’s NEC last month. SCM says the fair once again confirmed its leading role in Italy and in Europe, not only for its widest international range of industry-specific technological products, but also for its ability to innovate, opening the way to future scenarios in woodworking. The company’s concept, ‘Work simple. Work digital’ underpinned all SCM communication at the exhibition, the was the leitmotif of all the technological and digital innovations that were introduced. According to SCM, visitors were very interested by its Maestro Digital Systems platform and, in particular, the innovative Internet of Things (IoT) solution of SCM Maestro connect which, in response to Industry 4.0 requirements, makes the most of the potential of the IoT concept to create a system for collecting and analysing data from SCM machines.

93 Maestro connect is able to increasingly monitor and optimise production processes, offering on the one hand full control of production performance by the customer and, on the other hand, a number of micro-services such as prompt, smart maintenance and optimised spare part management. Among the most appreciated technologies, the Morbidelli CNC machining centres for drilling, routing and edgebanding, the Accord and Balestrini housing range, the Gabbiani S among SCM cutting options, Olimpic and Stefani edgebanders, the DMC sanding solutions, joinery machines starting from L’invincibile and the different surface finishing solutions from Superfici, drawing attention from for the duration of the show. The attention of visitors to the SCM stand was focused on edgebanding, CNC routing and drilling technologies, with on-the-stand purchases of several machines by existing

customers, that have made the most of the available choice for a quick upgrade of their production facilities. Great interest was also shown to the Gabbiani S beam saw with Maestro Optimizer, FlexCut panel handling solution and SawSet rapid setup device for scorer alignment. The imposing presence of Elmag Compact 3 spraying solution was not missed either, offering flexibility at an incredibly competitive price to medium-size furniture manufacturers. On the first day, the attendance of new smaller customers, many of which were from Ireland, was noticeable for both classical machines and advanced technologies. The following three days saw a large, qualified group of existing and new customers making the most of their local area sales manager, service engineers and Italian product specialists available on the stand to obtain in-depth presentations and demonstrations of the equipment on show for windows, doors and panel manufacturing. The choice of presenting a selected array of equipment and state-of-the-art in IoT and Industry 4.0 Digital Solutions has helped all visitors to understand how only a handful of competent suppliers can offer not only the latest versions of their mechanical and electronic assemblies, but have the competence and resources to develop the digital aspect of SCM’s offer to help customers develop and prosper in a very competitive market. www.scmgroup.com

94 W Exhibition Review

New innovations on show for TM Machinery Leading woodworking machinery supplier, TM Machinery Sales, showed its largest range of Striebig vertical panel saws and ALKO dust extraction systems to date at this year’s woodworking machinery and materials show, the W Exhibition. Promoting the two well-known brands at the four-day event, technical specialists and engineers were on hand to demonstrate the very latest models and software available, including the brand new Standard S vertical panel saw, which was demonstrated for the very first time in the UK. Based on the original Standard model which has been a best seller in the UK for over a decade, the Standard S TRK1 and TRK2 now have new, integrated features to assist the user even further. Differentiated by either an aluminium or wooden support, the Comfort package features a digital measuring system with motorised Y-axis locking and adjustment as standard. The digital display has simple-to-operate positioning buttons that allow the user to adjust the saw’s position at the touch of a button and a new VSA scoring saw unit, which is fully adjustable, that allows the saw to work easily with coated panel materials. It’s also equipped with 17 rollers and either pedal or pneumatic brakes, as well as a TRK dust extraction system. The stand also provided an opportunity to highlight Striebig’s first retro-fittable panel optimisation programme (POP), OptiDivide. Until now, the POP system was only available as a fully integrated optimisation package on the topof-the-range Striebig 4D vertical panel saw. However, with the addition of this latest retro-fittable device, users of existing Striebig vertical panel saws – regardless of the age or model of machine – can benefit from the very latest optimisation technology. The intelligent software, which is only available in the UK through the Leicester-based machinery supplier, has been created to calculate the most effective cutting strategy for each panel – maximising the

user’s time and substantially reducing material waste. The system can also be connected to the Wi-Fi, allowing panel sizes to be sent to the machine quickly, reducing errors on even the most challenging of panels or during strip cutting work. OptiDivide, which was demonstrated at the show on the new Standard S vertical panel saw, consists of a single, compact computer that is easily fitted to the machine. It comes equipped with a label printer for simple handling, so, once pieces have been cut, each part can be labelled with a barcode or the necessary product information for quick and simple handling. Sitting alongside TM Machinery’s exclusive range of Striebig vertical panel saws was its comprehensive range of ALKO extraction power units – the 120, 160, 200 and 250 – briquette presses and the AST 1.0 Basic sanding bench, which made its UK debut at the W Exhibition. The entry-level AST 1.0 Basic sanding table has been introduced as a competitive solution for smaller manufacturers. Working alongside a dust removal and filter system, the design is made from galvanised sheet steel and is equipped with a manual, tool-free height adjustment mechanism and handy scale for simple and effective use. It also benefits from offset longitudinal sides for edge sanding, a beechwood rack to prevent damage to the workpiece and a funnelTM Machinery showed its largest range of Striebig vertical panel shaped air guide for the saws and ALKO dust extraction systems at the W Exhibition extraction nozzle.

Matt Pearce, managing director of TM Machinery, says: “This year we’ve displayed our largest number of saws and dust extraction systems to date and the results speak for themselves. We’ve sold several high-spec models over the four-day period, including the Control and Compact saws we had on our stand. “We’ve also had increased interest in our extraction brand, ALKO. The new AST 1.0 Basic standing table has been extremely poplar with smaller manufacturers and we’ve had a good level of enquires that we now need to follow up. It’s been great to talk to new and existing TM customers and we’re looking forward to the show being in bigger halls for 2020.” 0116 271 7155 www.tmmachinery.co.uk

MAKA’s PM-Modular a winner at the W Exhibition The launch of the new MAKA PM-Modular drew considerable interest from a wide variety of joinery manufacturers, large and small, that are seeking to replace their 20-year-old machines, with equally heavy-duty machines which will stand the test of time. The PM-Modular’s uncompromising construction and quality was highly appreciated and a record number of enquiries were received during the show.

CNC clamps are available as a standard modular option, along with newel post and handrail clamps, as well as vacuum pods and pneumatic clamps for straight and curved mouldings

The new MAKA PM-Modular: the uncompromising heavy-duty five-axis CNC machine-centre for hardwood joinery

The machine has the same underpinnings as the old PM-270, except with greater performance and flexibility built-in. It is also much more accessible and easier to service and maintain. Being modular, it’s available with a range of options including a three-axis or five-Axis head PM170, or both, providing added value and higher performance. The PM-Modular is quicker and easier to set-up, due to its open structure. Uniquely, the operator can work safely from both sides of

the fixed table, front and back, left and right! The machine operates at high speed too, so given the quick setting time, the new PM is ideal for both bespoke and high volume joinery production. Given the machine’s inherent strength and rigidity, it is especially suited for large and heavy hardwood timber joinery. Available with lengths of four, six and eight metres, 1300 or 1600mm widths, and a generous Z axis capacity of 400mm, the PM is also comprehensively and

uncompromisingly equipped with one or two of MAKA’s own steelbodied POWER-MAKA spindles, delivering greater power, flexibility, life, longer warranty, instant toolchange, and faster processing! There’s also a choice of tool magazines too, with 20, 31 or 51 positions. The PM-Modular can also be supplied with either a matrix vacuum table, for nesting etc, or with the original pod and rail table, which is highly suited for joinery processes. MAKA’s rails and pods are rigid, secure and precise, and ensure your work is set-up and processed correctly first time and every time. MD Iain Young explains: “The reaction to the introduction of the new PM-Modular is extraordinary. It’s highly appreciated that this new model is so well received, and the benefits are so clearly recognised and welcomed by so many joinery companies visiting us during the W Exhibition.” 01952 607700 www.maka.com

102 W Exhibition Review

Oh, what a show! Following the successful format adopted two years ago, the DCS Group was once again represented at W Exhibition by Dust Control Systems Ltd, Ecogate Ltd and Gallito Ltd – underlining the group’s capacity to provide the UK woodworking industry with a One Stop Source for dust and fume extraction products and services. Over the last two years the DCS Group has continued to expand production at both its Dewsbury headquarters and at the group’s manufacturing facility at Thorp Arch, near Wetherby. In 2016, Gallito announced the launch of its FastClip Ductwork System and production of this high-quality clip-fit ductwork, and associated accessories, now occupies around half of the 3000m2 of manufacturing space; alongside the company’s facilities for fabrication of dry filter and water wash spray booths, conveying systems, drying and curing ovens, as well as design and installation of bespoke turnkey finishing systems. Mark Carson, Gallito’s managing director since January this year, has been instrumental in the company’s expansion since joining the company in 2017. “At Gallito, traditional metalworking skills are employed hand-in-hand with advanced laser cutting technology and automated machinery,” says Mark Carson, “and we have the capacity to manufacture high quality products, in a range of materials, to just about any shape and size… the W Exhibition provided the ideal opportunity to showcase our manufacturing skills, across a range of materials and finishes, as well as being able to demonstrate our inhouse design capabilities.” The DCS Group stand was also host to extraction equipment specialist Schuko – Dust Control Systems is the exclusive distributor for the German manufacturer’s products in the UK and visitors to W Exhibition were able to check out the latest developments in extraction technology with the help of a scaleddown replica filter unit. Recently-appointed

sales director for DCS, Andy Hives, remarks: “Being able to view first-hand the advanced technologies at work inside a Schuko filter unit was quite enlightening for our potential customers at the show… not easy to achieve with a telephone enquiry, or even on a site visit.” Also on display for the first time in the UK was the new Schuko VALDI which, with a footprint of just 2m x 2m and multiple build and waste collection options, is raising the bar for compact filter design and construction. Ecogate provided W Exhibition visitors with another practical demonstration of the Ecogate on-demand extraction optimisation technology; clearly showing how this worldwide-proven system can drastically reduce electricity consumed by an extraction system. Ecogate was first seen in the UK at W10, but the 2018 demo featured the new generation Ecogate greenBOX NXT controller which allows control of up to 32 Ecogates from a smartphone or other internetconnected device. Chris Oldfield, Ecogate’s managing director, comments: “As well as being able to explain the significant benefits of the Ecogate system to potential end users, W Exhibition also gave us the chance to meet with like-minded established business owners, from allied trades, to discuss the ongoing development of our network of authorised Ecogate Highlights from DCS Group’s performance at W Exhibition... for another introducers, resellers chance to see what it was all about, visit: and installers.” https://my.matterport.com/show/?m=ffrifFvicJH

Pages.indd 102

The general consensus from DCS Group company directors was that W Exhibition had lived up to all their expectations. “W Exhibition had been a much-anticipated show,” says Andy Hives, “and we were not disappointed; it was a well-attended show, with a reassuringly positive vibe around the halls, and we were pleased with the flow of visitors to our stand – UK-based in the main, but also a significant representation from Irish woodworking manufacturers. “The level of enquiries for the Group was up on 2016 – in quality as well as numbers – and we are currently in the process of contacting everyone who took the trouble to come and chat with us.” In conclusion, DCS managing director, Philip Oldfield, comments: “I thought our stand looked great – a very professional presentation and a credit to our design and installation team who have worked tirelessly on this over recent months. “Only time will tell if our attendance at W Exhibition generates sufficient additional turnover to have made it worthwhile but, after our initial review of the enquiries received over the four days, we are optimistic that prospective sales revenue could be in the region of 10 times our spend on the show.” Mr Oldfield also confirmed that he had booked a similar space again for the exhibition in 2020 but, if you didn’t get chance to visit theDCS Group stand at W Exhibition check out the new group websites at: www.DCSlimited.co.uk, www.ecogate.co.uk and www.gallito.co.uk. Rothwell & Thomas in seventh heaven Established in 1983, Rothwell & Thomas works closely with its discerning clients to create premium solutions. In order to achieve this high quality production discipline, the company came to rely on Altendorf to provide its sliding panel saw capability – so much so, that Rothwell & Thomas recently took delivery of its seventh Altendorf saw. Founded in 1983, Rothwell & Thomas produces quality hand-crafted custom-made furniture. Towards the end of the 80s, the Manchester firm realised it needed a sliding table panel saw that matched its high-end quality. Production manager Mike Rothwell explains how the company became aware of Altendorf’s reputation as the best saw of its kind on the market – and decided to research the situation further. “Our joiners had used Altendorf saws in previous roles and made us aware of the name and informed us of the reliability, precision and capability of its saws – so we went ahead and purchased our first Altendorf. Since then we haven’t looked back and the most recent F45 purchase is our seventh machine over the years. “You know exactly what you get with Altendorf and with this reason we would never consider looking anywhere else. We have a WA80 and the new F45 EvoDrive currently in operation and we simply cannot afford to be without them,” explains Mike.

The new F45 EvoDrive was recently successfully installed at Rothwell & Thomas. The company specified the CNC rip fence option to guarantee precise measurements on every cut along with further options such as the on/ off switch on the sliding table, RAPIDO scoring system and the Duplex mitre system.

Mike concluded that the use of his Altendorf machine is crucial to helping the business produce hand-crafted, quality, bespoke furniture that his company and its customers can be proud of. www.altendorf.com www.rothwellandthomas.co.uk

AMS says farewell to another W Exhibition

The AMS stand at the W Exhibition in Birmingham

AMS exhibited for the fourth time at the W Exhibititon and it is very happy with the end results once again. At previous exhibitions, AMS attended as an exhibitor only, but in 2018 it also became an exhibition sponsor. “These are days to get to know and talk with a lot of new customers, to see familiar faces of the industry and to enjoy them visiting your stand. It’s a pleasure to have been there again,” say the AMS directors, “so much so that for the third time we are more than doubling the size of our stand for 2020, with 320m2.” During the four show days, AMS recognised that the machines in demand were the planer moulders, the panel saws and the crosscuts, especially the newly-launched high speed optimizing and defecting crosscuts. “This year has been a special W Exhibition for AMS because we have increased the range of planer moulders and added a range of crosscuts. We were excited to show them at the exhibition and they had a warm welcome with orders secured at the show,” say the directors. AMS was exhibiting to its visitors the planer moulder range, which it has been working with for at least eight years and all its engineers are perfectly familiar with them. Also to be seen were the new Wadkin Bursgreen M523EL Easy Set five head, and the M523EL Universal six head. AMS directors would like to invite all customers – both old and new – to its showroom in Skeffington, Leicestershire, to try its machines and be treated to lunch by AMS. 08448 449949 sales@advancedmachinery.co.uk

AFS Biomass in partnership with RESET, Renewable Energy Solutions Environmental Technology. AFS Biomass are proud to announce the UK launch of SyngaSmart, an international patent-pending integrated solution for power and heat generation through biomass pyro-gasification in a carbon-negative and no-waste production cycle.

ut ions Environment al Technology

Cutting edge plug-and-play co-generation plants manufactured in Italy to exacting standards, the SyngaSmart CHP systems are housed in 20 ft insulated and sound proofed modular shipping containers, enclosing the whole generation process, from biomass loading to power generation. SyngaSmart solid biomass combined heat and power systems are carbon negative with no waste. Emissions are limited to the engine exhaust gases which comply with all emission standards and restrictions. The “no waste” production cycle only generates energy and a small amount of biochar, a powerful natural fertilizer and water treatment additive. SyngaSmart systems are eligible for the Government RHI scheme, (Renewable Heat Incentive), which rewards businesses that adopt biomass heating systems for all the metered heat generated for 20 years. A welcome additional income stream.

Cworkshop intends to be the largest cut-and-edge business in the UK

There have always been a number of companies providing a cut-and-edge service across the UK but, among them, Cworkshop is striving to become one of the largest manufacturers of high-quality wood-based components and products for furniture and interior design industries in the UK. Established in 2010, Felix Zajarnijus and Antony Didjurgis decided that they wanted to help bespoke furniture and cabinetry companies by providing a superior service to the one they were getting at the time. They both had years of experience and knowledge in the field of cabinetmaking, and having decided to start their own workshop pulled out all the stops to

establish Cworkshop. Their company intends to become well known for its speed of service and impressive product quality while delivering excellent customer experience at all times. “Cworkshop is a cutting and edging specialist focused on quality production and impressive standards of service. From sales enquiries
all the way to production, our customers feel taken care of. We know that communication is the key to understanding our customer needs—we don’t just want to be a business that simply sells you a service and off you go; rather we want to be a business where customers feel at home and can

rely on us to manage their projects without any stress.” Armed with four beam saws, two edgebanders and a CNC router of the highest quality, Cworkshop is well-equipped and ready to service customers with a fast turnaround. Sales manager, Daniele Danese, concludes: “This could not be a better time
to find out about us because our new website is about to be launched and all of our customers will be able to place orders online at any time of the day and night—so we very much look forward to hearing from them.” www.cworkshop.co.uk

110 Updates

Lohmeyer teams up with Ney to offer more CNC options for smart woodworking Ney knows a little bit about being competitive, having served the woodworking industry successfully for more than 35years. The secret is to increase productivity by being more efficient and working smarter, whilst keeping a good eye on costs. Anyone considering taking a step forward into CNC manufacturing would be well advised to visit Ney to see how the Coventry business can transform their business and increase profits. Lohmeyer offers an entry level, flat table machine in 8 x 4ft format, all the way through to the Baz 895 nesting Line with auto load and unload with label printing. Specifications include either lateral or rotary tool changer, C axis, aggregates, tool probe, drill block, ISO or HSK spindle with two vacuum pumps being standard on all machines. Also included is automatic gated dust extraction system and automatic lubrication system. Pod and rail machines are also available with C axis and integrated chip conveyor as standard features as well as Indexable vacuum cups. Options include various reference stop options, LED rail positioning system and hold-down device for narrow pieces. Control systems are either Osai or Syntec, depending on the model, the spindle motor is HSD, drillblock Filato, inverter Delta, axis drives Yaskawa, switches Euchner, sensors Balluff, rails and bearings HiWin, and vacuum pumps EuroVac. All are world leaders in their own right. The software is NC Hops or DDX Easywood but the control is open to other software via post processor. All models have devices fitted as standard which Ney says are normally optional on other manufacturers’ machines. All machines are fitted with a Beckhoff digital drive system which means the machine only has to be referenced once, unlike other machines which have to be referenced after every switch on, says Ney.

Pages.indd 110

The Lohmeyer machine is very competitively priced, and boasts a robust design coupled with absolute ease of operation. Prowood Finance is available – subject to acceptance – to make that new investment even more affordable. For more information, contact Mick McBeth at Ney Ltd. 024 7630 8100 www.ney.co.uk

112 Updates For a washroom product with design flexibility and excellent properties, panel products expert Lawcris has the ideal product.

Durable, affordable and water-resistant

– the Washroom Range Different projects can demand different properties from materials. Do they need to be lightweight? Budget-friendly? Durable? The list goes on. Fortunately, when it comes to a demanding brief, there is one product that really ticks all the boxes: the Washroom Range from Pfleiderer. This range gives manufacturers and specifiers the flexibility to mix and match materials whilst ensuring design coherence. With 23 striking and complementing decor designs, the Washroom Range features vibrant primary colours, natural woodgrains and soughtafter patterns. This allows for creative freedom, with each option available in high pressure laminate, moisture-resistant melamine-faced chipboard and the ever-popular compactgrade laminate – meaning a huge variety of applications are possible. A dense, decorative panel, compact solidgrade laminate (CGL) features a black core. CGL is composed of layers of kraft paper, impregnated with phenolic resin, then bonded with decorative surfaces. Its inherent water resistance is particularly suited for high humidity environments. This robust material is ideal for high-traffic areas of design, whilst the high pressure laminate (HPL), similarly hygienic and hard-wearing, is the perfect choice for flexibility in profile and design. The MFC provides a lower-cost alternative, meaning budgets can be stretched further. As the name suggests, this range is specifically

designed for use in washrooms. The flexibility to mix and match makes the nature of this range an ideal surfacing solution for every washroom application, lending aesthetic appeal to any room or facility. It is especially for use in changing rooms and as wall cladding or partitions in washroom areas such as toilets, hospitals, swimming pools and spa resorts. These impressive, easy-care and hard-wearing properties of the products mean that vision is only limited by imagination – the creative freedom that is delivered by the Washroom Range offers endless design possibilities for creating a whole host of items such as cubicles, lockers, benches, vanity units, duct panelling and more. Yorkshire wood-based panel distributor Lawcris stocks this very popular Washroom Range, available on next day delivery. The collection can be found on the company’s website where those interested can also order samples and request brochures. www.lawcris.co.uk

Updates 113

It’s a win-win for specialist woodworking workshop with purchase of new wood waste heater A specialist woodworking workshop in London has purchased a wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology to reduce waste disposal costs and provide free heating for the business. The London Art Workshop in East London is an established workshop serving the creative industries, including artists, galleries, designers and retailers with its range of fine art furniture for retail and visual merchandising. A move from Hackney to Leyton required the business to review its heating needs. Its original Hackney workshop had low ceilings so was easily heated with standard gas heaters. However, the new larger workshop had no heating, so the company needed to find a costeffective solution for the business. Although the employees took to wearing several layers of clothes in winter, their hands were always cold, as wearing gloves just isn’t practical whilst manufacturing. They were also filling a skip with wood waste each week, so a wood waste heater seemed a great solution to both problems. Reading about the benefits of wood waste heaters and their ability to save companies money on waste disposal and heating, the team contacted Wood Waste Technology to find out more about converting wood offcuts into energy.

Pages.indd 113

After speaking to Kurt Cockroft, MD of Wood Waste Technology and arranging a site survey, London Art Workshop ordered a WT5 which was installed earlier this year. The business now burns all its wood waste, so its waste removal costs are minimal and the new heater keeps the space warm. As an additional bonus, the new heater is also creating a tidier workplace and saving space as, previously, all the waste would pile up around the factory whilst waiting for disposal. Everyone thinks it’s win-win! Apparently, word is now getting around the industrial estate about London Art Workshop’s wood waste heater, so some of the neighbouring businesses have asked to drop off some of their wood waste. As a result, the team at London Art Workshop will no doubt be recommending these other businesses talk to Wood Waste Technology soon, as the management is delighted it chose them as its supplier, as it says that from the initial point of contact right through to installation they’ve been a fantastic group of people to deal with, and the heater is easy to use and reliable. Now, the London Art Workshop is benefiting from being able to convert all its wood waste to heat, as the wood waste heater provides a

free, environmentally-friendly facility to heat the factory whilst saving the company vast amounts of money on waste disposal fees. The company has also purchased a summer heat dump, to allow the waste wood to continue to burn throughout the summer, by sending the heat direct to atmosphere. Kurt Cockroft says: “We’re delighted that we could help the London Art Workshop lower its operational costs by saving money on heating and waste disposal.” Wood Waste Technology’s years of expertise in wood waste solutions have helped many companies reduce their waste disposal and heating costs. As well as offering site survey, design, manufacture, installation and on-going maintenance for new units, the company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision-engineered shredders and briquetters, available in various sizes and specifications to suit all business applications. 01785 250400 www.woodwastetechnology.com www.grossuk.co.uk

114 Updates The increasing demand for coatings that are certified and tested to recognised fire standards has ensured that Hesse Lignal developed its PU Multicoat lacquer to meet this requirement.

Hesse’s flame-retardant coatings offer EN 13501-1 and IMO certification Hesse Lignal offers a comprehensive range of fully tested and certified lacquers that meet multiple fire standards. On its Fantastic Fill Primer and Fantastic Colour ranges the coatings boast EN 13501-1 to B-s1-d0 certification – which supersedes the prior requirement to meet BS 476 or Class 0. In addition to the certification, the primer has the ability to coat MDF in one coat. Fantastic Colour also carries the same certification and goes over the top of the primer again with one coat or can be used directly on MDF. On the clear coatings, Hesse’s DE 4259x is a two component multicoat acrylic PU lacquer that boasts a three-day pot life. This multicoat lacquer meets the EC-type examination certificate IMO flame-retardant for seagoing

vessels which puts it at the forefront of marine coatings. In addition this product meets the French M1 classification as well as the test certificate for flame retardance to B1 according to DIN 4102. This high spec has not meant any compromise on finish – the lacquer is resilient, and formulated with additional light protection. It is a coat on coat system that achieves impressive results and is universally applicable. The product can also be used on bleached wood and boasts high flow and levelling characteristics. The stringent testing criteria means the Hesse PU Multicoat is ideal for high-stress environments such as restaurants, kitchens, bathrooms or any area demanding the highest levels of both chemical and mechanical resistance. It can also be pigmented to suit almost all colour tones and a wide range of gloss levels. As to be expected from Hesse, safety does not stop with the fire testing. Its coatings are free of wood preservatives, toxic-heavy metals, phthalate plasticisers, formaldehyde, and volatile aromatic and halogenated organic compounds. Hesse Lignal “will not compromise on its customers’ health at any cost”. Hesse is using its partnership with Redwood Innovations to distribute this product in the UK. Customers wishing to try the various fire-rated systems can call Redwood and benefit from strong technical back-up over the phone, and on site if required. 02392 233310 sales@redwoodinnovations

Why do I need dust extraction? Air Plants Dust Extraction has installed and supported over 50,000 dust extraction installations throughout the UK since 1897. Ongoing research and expert engineering sets Air Plants apart as an innovator in the dust extraction industry. But exactly why is dust extraction needed? In many workplaces dust can cause serious health problems and potential fire and explosion hazards. Protecting against the dangers of dust is crucial. Simply, dust is made up of small, airborne particles. Most are too small to be seen but can be breathed in through the nose and mouth. Dust inhaled is usually filtered out in the nasal passages, however, very fine dust is able to travel to the lungs and into other organs of the body. Fine dust also stays in the air for much longer. Across many industries, the use of powered machinery and tools can create large amounts of dust. Some materials such as certain wood and metal types, can create particularly hazardous dust. Apart from airborne dust being harmful, resulting waste needs to be disposed of carefully. Efficient dust extraction ensures the health of employees, a safer working environment is achieved, risks are reduced and even help machinery to work more efficiently. By capturing,

conveying and filtering dust, extraction improves air quality by removing potentially harmful particulates such as wood dust from the air. The benefits of an Air Plants Dust Extraction solutions, are: – Protect the health of employees in the workplace – Reduce the risk of fire and explosions – Limit time spent on cleaning up – Prevent slips and trips caused by settled dust – Maintain the efficiency of your machinery – Comply with COSHH regulations – Reduce allergens and bacteria – Reduce hazardous and harmful dust. An extremely effective way of controlling dust is through a Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) system, comprising ducting, filter and fanset. Dust is captured by means of hoods which are placed around the application. Airflow, induced

into the hoods by the fanset then carries the dust through ducting to the filter which removes the dust from the air. One LEV system can provide dust extraction for multiple machines. Getting the right LEV system for a workplace is paramount. Control of Substances Hazardous to Health 2002 (COSHH) are Statutory Regulations that stipulate how employers should protect employees and others in the workplace from the hazards of substances such as dust. General requirements are set out for risk assessment, monitoring, control of exposure and preventing and reducing harm to health. Read about Air Plants’ recent installations and how the company has helped customers to control and dispose of dust safely, reduce costs and increase efficiency on its website: www.airplants.co.uk/case-studies/
