Comment After more than two years’ absence, the January Furniture Show returned – albeit in April – and the country’s retailers were invited to peruse four halls of furniture and interiors products for the seasons ahead. Whilst there were highlights with many of the leading lights from the ranks of British furniture manufacturing, it has to be said that the majority of the brands and companies on offer were from overseas. On one hand, retailers will appreciate the diversity – and of course it is an open and dynamic marketplace – but I would appreciate a healthier turn-out of British brands at our home trade show. Perhaps the effect of other events, such as the INDX, Minerva Group and Long Point, are serving to dilute the number of British manufacturers wishing to exhibit at their home trade show. Who this does impact of course, is the retailer who may well have to attend multiple events – taking them away from their businesses – to fully appreciate the British-made products on offer today. Coming up this month for furniture and joinery manufacturers to attend is an open house event from Masterwood, and also one from Holz-Her in early June. The next major international of note – that I will be attending – is the impressive double-header of Holz-Handwerk-Fensterbau, held from July 12-15th – out of step to its regular Spring date, but nonetheless a welcome return for this important and substantial event. Speaking of events, for readers who are not already aware, the inaugural Furniture & Joinery Conference is taking place October 27th this year at Vox conference facility at Resorts World Birmingham, on the NEC complex. This is set to be a unique platform for furniture and joinery manufacturers to come together and debate important issues such as: how are we dealing with the skills gap for today’s businesses; how to become a more sustainable business; equality, diversity and inclusion; how best to source the best technology and materials; and

BWF launches apprenticeship campaign

The British Woodworking Federation (BWF) has launched a campaign to champion the role of apprentices in woodworking and joinery manufacturing and highlight the diversity of career opportunities in the industry. The campaign, entitled “Our industry’s next generation: Apprentices tell their stories” sees apprentices and former apprentices of BWF members share their journeys to bring to life the passion, achievements and benefits that an apprenticeship can offer. The construction industry is facing a skills shortage, with CITB estimating more than 43,000 new entrants are needed every year for the next five years to maintain output. This campaign aims to encourage the next generation into the woodworking and joinery manufacturing profession by shining a light on the apprentices and former apprentices and the breadth of opportunities offered by the sector. The campaign, which includes video interviews and case studies, will run across multiple channels to raise awareness of the diversity of roles, skills and career pathways

within the industry. “Hearing direct from apprentices and apprentice graduates in our profession about why they chose a career in woodworking and joinery is inspirational for the next generations,” says Helen Hewitt, CEO of the British Woodworking Federation. “The wide range of roles, jobs and opportunities within the industry is clear, and as our apprentices have highlighted, every day is exciting, different and a chance to learn new skills. “As the focus on sustainability is pushed to the top of the agenda, it’s clear that woodworking and joinery skills will be sought after as demand for sustainable building materials, such as timber, increases. It’s therefore vital that as an industry we come together to champion the important role that apprentices play in securing the growth and future of our profession. This campaign will maintain the momentum and focus on apprentices throughout the year, raising awareness of the diverse and fulfilling career options that lie ahead for those joining our industry.”

The campaign forms part of the BWF’s 2022 plans and core focus on skills, talent recruitment and retention. “Our industry’s next generation: Apprentices tell their stories” includes content from BWF members: A R Manley, ERW Joinery, George Barnsdale, Input Joinery, Masonite and William Holmes. www.bwf.org.uk/education/timber-futures/

SCM presents its high efficiency, integrated compact factory at Interzum Guangzhou The new “integrated compact factory” presented by the Italian Group offers a complete machining process with just three, yet state-of-the-art technological solutions. It’s a flexible production model that, if requested, is both modular and reconfigurable, with increasingly more advanced automation systems. The concept is an answer to specific demands from the Chinese high-end furnishings and design market. SCM reconfirmed its attendance at Interzum Guangzhou, the main trade fair event in China for the woodworking industry, and proved to be a benchmark partner for businesses in the “high-end” Chinese market looking for highly innovative, efficient technological solutions to produce top quality design products. Behind the Italian group’s solidity and reliability lies a story of technological innovation and toplevel skills in the woodworking sector that has been protracted for 70 years, an anniversary that SCM celebrates in 2022. China continues to be a strategic market for the Italian group with its directly managed branch and a specific engineering team, capable of offering the most advanced Chinese businesses projects of entire factories that are “turnkey” as well as highly innovative and efficient customised automated solutions. Solutions like the “integrated compact factory” on show at Interzum Guangzhou 2022 are one of the many configurations that the SCM Smart & Human Factory can assume based on specific client demands. A cell of automated, modular and scalable technologies which, depending on

SCM aims to present a complete factory model for panel machining in a few square metres and with three technological solutions that stand out for their high level of efficiency even in the most flexible machinings and for their ability to achieve a top quality, design product. Equally

important is the MES management system that optimises 4.0 programming, management and interconnection of the entire production flow. The “integrated compact factory” in detail The key advantages of the cell presented by SCM include extreme machining flexibility, a fixed and just in-time production flow and an excellent end product quality, thanks to the special features of the technological solutions on display. Beam saw The gabbiani beam saws sizing area, stable and heavy-duty, is the ideal solution for sizing both single and multiple panels made by wood and its derivatives. It combines the great advantage of flexibility with high levels of efficiency, with a productivity of up to 8m3 per shift, thanks to the high-speed device that allows to reach a speed of 70 m/min of the pusher and 100 m/min of the carriage, without any additional maintenance. As a must, an excellent cutting finish thanks to the exclusive characteristics of the blade carriage and a safe and constant tightening made possible by the pneumatic blade unblocking system. Besides this, precision in every phase of working is guaranteed by uniform >>

SIMPLE AND AUTOMATED PRODUCTION FROM ALL ANGLES gabbiani a2 is the innovative Angular Beam Saw that meets all the needs of both mass and batch 1 productions. The new operating units offer maximum performance in terms of productivity and cutting quality, while granting outstanding cleanliness of machine and work environment.

• SAW SET: In a few seconds, the "SAW-SET" device performs a quick and precise electronic setting of the blades. • ZERO-DUST SYSTEM: The automatic system of dust control curtains in sections operates along the cut to contain the sawdust and guarantee its complete evacuation. • FLEXCUT 1D: 2 pushers with completely independent stroke allows simultaneous processing of several bars with complex cutting patterns in very short cycle times.

pressure over the entire length of the cut, a secure grip on the panel even at maximum speed and perfect parallelism even with panels that are not perfectly flat. The base and the work table in reinforced and ribbed steel allow precise movements of the carriage, ensuring stability, compactness and maximum repeatability of the cut over time. The possibility of enabling or disabling the selective air floating on each working table thanks to the independent motors, ensures immediate and quality cuts with the additional advantage of obtaining maximum cleanliness and smoothness only where needed, thus avoiding accidental falls of panels already cut. Nesting and drilling-routing The cell also features the morbidelli x200 CNC machining centre; the ideal solution for flexible “batch 1” production because it permits nesting machining of pieces that are even shaped, and in a variety of sizes, with a cutting speed of up to 50 m/min and unprecedented productivity levels for this technology. All the machining work is done without removing the spoil panel, even in 3D thanks to the X-POD suction cups. This dramatically reduces the machine’s set-up times. Another advantage is its maximum precision: even the smallest pieces can be blocked during machining thanks to the new X-Vacuum system which activates a dynamic vacuum concentrated on the worktable zone where machining is ongoing. The machining centre on show at Interzum Guangzhou is designed to offer an even faster machining speed compared to market standards thanks to its integration with an articulated robot for unloading the panels. So, outstanding performance and maximum configuration combine with a considerable increase in flexibility and productivity.

Edgebanding Stefani x, the new industrial edgebander designed to offer top machining quality on any kind of panel and material to fully meet the needs of a connected, integrated digital factory, is making its début at Interzum Guangzhou and on the Chinese market. Stefani x can machine panels at a speed of up to 30 m/min. over the course of several shifts a day. All this, thanks to top of the range units and a new, highly rigid mechanical structure. Another advantage is the excellent flexibility when changing glue: thanks to the unique “glue switch” solution, just in time change of colour and glue type is possible, thus achieving even more flexible, efficient production. The “secret” lies with the two glue tanks operating simultaneously during machining, that can be interchanged using the type and colour of glue requested by the work program. The glue tank can also be replaced, or maintenance work carried out on it without having to stop the edgebander. The new Stefani x also offers top-quality gluing on any type of edge. The intensity of the first pressure roller is adaptive: it can be automatically adjusted by the edgebanding machine’s control system according to the edge being used. Furthermore, the edge can be replaced with a reduced distance between the panels thanks to the new automatic edge change device with two and six rolls and with a roller change system

that allows for a reduced interspacing of 350mm without limiting the machine’s performances. Also featuring is the new range of high-end electronic units (end trimming, rounding and glue scraping) designed to meet two objectives that are key to the market: easy use even for more complex machining on delicate, trending materials, thanks to an automatic, flexible set-up, as well as repeatability, quality and accurate production processes, thanks to the electronic touch. Still on the subject of edgebanding, SCM is confirmed as a benchmark partner for AirFusion+ technology, greatly appreciated by the Chinese businesses in the furniture and design industry looking to stand out from the crowd with an exclusive and surprising finish. Indeed, AirFusion+ allows for edgebanding without the use of glue, making the joint between edge and panel invisible. The AirFusion+ technology presented at Interzum Guangzhou on a Stefani kd edgebander is compatible and easily integrated with traditional gluing technologies as well as being available on the entire range of SCM edgebanding machines. As well as the technologies on display, the SCM team will be presenting an extensive programme of virtual demos on the latest technologies most in line with Chinese market demands, in answer to the vastly varied panel and solid wood machining requirements. www.scmgroup.com

Awareness of apprenticeships is central to filling skills shortage in timber industry The skills shortage in the UK forestry and timber industry cannot be filled until there is more awareness of the exciting apprenticeship opportunities available in the sector. That’s according to the largest forestry and timber group in the UK, BSW Group, who welcomed Member of Scottish Parliament Kate Forbes to its BSW Timber sawmill in Fort William during Scottish Apprenticeship Week. During her visit, Ms Forbes toured the site and met with apprentice engineers and saw doctors, to hear first-hand about their experiences and the growth of the industry. Group Learning and Development Manager Tony Lockey believes the visit was crucial to raising awareness about the skills shortage that exists in the timber sector. He said: “In the wake of COP26, there has been an emphasis on the fact we need to promote working in timber and forestry, and how a career in our industry can support young people’s values about protecting the environment. “A lot of the time, the apprenticeships that the Government pushes are focused on public sector needs, such as a call for 30,000 new NHS workers. Having the opportunity to show one of our region’s MPs around is great, and we welcome more MSPs to come along and see what we are doing.

Member of Scottish Parliament Kate Forbes pictured with fourth year mechanical apprentice, Ryan Boyle

Member of Scottish Parliament Kate Forbes is pictured with Jamie Duncan, a third year saw doctor apprentice

“The passion that our apprentices were able to get across enables Kate [Forbes] to go to Westminster and promote apprenticeships in timber and forestry businesses.” The largest sawmiller in the country and a subsidiary of BSW Group, BSW Timber has a strong history of apprenticeships, with 22 of the 25 taken on in the last ten years still working for the business. For Lockey, building awareness of apprenticeship schemes beyond national frameworks is vital to getting people into the industry. He added: “What people often forget is that we need to educate parents and colleges on various types of apprenticeships too. It’s not very often that parents will advise their children to look at an apprenticeship with us, but they might push them towards an officestyle apprenticeship. Getting people down to the sawmill, can be an eye-opener, which really represents what career opportunities there are in our sector. “Some of our leading lights have come from the apprenticeship route. We are always keen to put them forward for awards as they not only promote the fantastic work they are doing within the sector, but it raises the profile of apprenticeship schemes. When people see the technical side of what we do, it presents our world to a wider audience.” Lockey added: “When we select young people for our programme, it is to provide them with a career in our business at the end of it. We want apprentices to capitalise on opportunities with the aim that they will stay within our teams into the future.” Former apprentice Shaun MacLeod played a starring role in Ms Forbes’ visit to Fort William. MacLeod, who was nominated for a Scottish Apprenticeship Award, has not only helped BSW Timber to reduce its carbon footprint, but also to save money. Innovations developed by a team of apprentices, and driven by MacLeod through Skills Development Scotland’s Fuel Change Challenge, included the idea of introducing a new electric-powered mobile side-loader fleet to the mill in Fort William. The initiatives explored by the 21-year-old and his team offered new ways of working and could potentially deliver annual savings of £400,000 a year for the mill, with the added opportunity to cut carbon emissions by thousands of tonnes per year. Shaun began his Modern Apprenticeship in Electrical Control Systems with BSW Timber

Fort William’s Mill Manager, Oliver Stephen, was thrilled to promote BSW Timber to Member of Scottish Parliament Kate Forbes recently

straight from school and completed his apprenticeship in November last year. “Technically I really progressed my learning in electrical and mechanical areas and my understanding of industrial manufacturing through my apprenticeship,” said MacLeod. “My apprenticeship has also helped me massively with my personal skills, my confidence, and being able to communicate with others. I’m currently in a mentor role for the younger apprentices going through the Fuel Change Challenge, so this has helped with my leadership skills.” The Fort William management team is well-versed in apprenticeships, with electrical supervisor Stuart Matheson working his way through the ranks after joining the firm as an electrical apprentice in 2015, while engineering manager Robert Wojcik was appointed in December to support employee development as an apprentice mentor. Mill manager Oliver Stephen was thrilled to promote the site to Ms Forbes and believes it can be a catalyst to getting more young people interested in the industry. He said: “The visit was great, and it gave Kate [Forbes] the opportunity to hear first-hand from Shaun, Jamie Duncan (a third-year saw doctor apprentice) and Ryan Boyle (a fourth-year mechanical apprentice) on what they do day to day in the mill. “It’s important to have these visits from people like the Cabinet Secretary as it gives us the opportunity to showcase what we are all about and discuss future growth plans. “The benefits of taking part go much further than helping the business, as it also engages young people and enables them to influence their colleagues by coming forward with different ideas about ways of doing things, which has been a very positive experience.” www.bsw.co.uk

The Turkish woodworking machinery industry breaks export record once again

The Turkish woodworking machinery sector, respected worldwide for the machinery and services it offers to the market, broke the export record again in 2021. Evaluating the success of the industry, AIMSAD secretary general, Arif Onur Kaçak, believes that the industry will continue to break records. 2021 saw the Turkish woodworking machinery sector break the export record again, equalling its record for the fourth time in a row. Evaluating this success, Arif comments: “As the Turkish woodworking machinery industry, we write a new success story at the end of each year. “Not only our export figures but also our production and domestic sales are on the rise. We fully believe that our industry, which has

become one of the important players of the world woodworking machinery industry with its high-tech machinery and services, will add new successes to its list.” Noting that the woodworking machinery industry – which realised the highest export of all time with $110m at the end of 2020 – increased its exports by 15.69% by the end of 2021, Arif said: “When the export figures are examined, it is seen that the total export of the sector at the end of 2021 was realised at the level of $126,629,000. “The production of our industry, which increases its production capacities every year to meet the demands of machinery from many different countries, increased by 18.44% at the end of 2021 and reached $301,498,000.”

The United Kingdom is one of the important export markets for Turkey Arif explains that the Turkish woodworking machinery industry exports to many different regions of the world: “The Turkish woodworking machinery industry made the most exports to Iraq with $7,427,000 in 2021. Russia followed Iraq with $6,672,000. After Russia, England came with $4,595,000.’’ Arif also underlined that England, which imports $300m worth of woodworking machinery annually, is one of the priority and potential markets for the Turkish woodworking machinery industry. www.turkishwoodworkingmachinery.com

The whole team took part in the tournament, covering the various shifts throughout the day and into the night. Donations came from business partners, suppliers, manufacturers and supporters and the total amount was doubled by the FMC. The FMC’s Step 2 It Campaign was set up to encourage the UK furnishing industry to organise and take part in a sports-based activity or challenge to generate vital funds to help those struggling financially.

The charity provides financial and practical support to people working throughout the furniture trade, and have done for over 100 years. Since the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic, the charity has committed to award up to £1m in welfare grants to those whose livelihoods have been critically impacted by the crisis. As a Corporate member of the FMC, the Handy team felt strongly about this and wanted to give back to an industry that they have been part of for over 30 years. “We are delighted to have taken part and

raised vital funds for the Furniture Makers’ Company Step 2 It Campaign,” comments Nick Harland-Smith, MD of Handy. “The charity has been so supportive of companies in the furniture industry, which have faced many challenges over the past two years dealing with the impact of rising costs and disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. “The Table Tennis marathon gave us all a renewed sense of community and belonging as a team, as well as raising money to support others in our industry.” www.handyltd.co.uk

Charity football tournament returns as Tim Bloyce Cup The Furniture Makers’ Company’s hotly contested five-a-side football tournament is to be renamed the ‘Tim Bloyce Cup’ to honour Tim Bloyce, a life-long football fan and employee of event sponsor, Ocee Design, who was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) last year. Now in its eighth year, this summer’s tournament will be the first event in two years due to the pandemic. The Tim Bloyce Cup will be taking place at the Lucozade Powerleague

Football Centre, Coventry on Sunday 3rd July 2022 and the charity is looking forward to welcoming new and returning teams to the industry’s answer to the Premier League. Kick off will be at 1pm, with the tournament commencing with a group stage. Every team will be guaranteed a minimum of three matches. Mixed gender teams from offices, factories, showrooms or groups of friends of all abilities are very welcome. The winners of the groups will then go forward to the elimination rounds. Once

the action is over, the day will finish with a BBQ buffet, before the winning team is crowned. Neil Clark, sales director at Ocee Design, says: “Our much-loved colleague Tim Bloyce recently received the devastating news that he has been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND). We are all having to come to terms with this dreadful situation and we want to do as much as we can to support Tim and his family at this difficult time. “Ocee Design work closely with charity The Furniture Makers’ Company to support our great industry and the people that work within it. We saw an opportunity to not only get more involved in their fundraising efforts but also where we could highlight one of Tim’s great passions, football. “For almost a decade now, The Furniture Makers’ Company has organised an annual five-a-side football tournament. Considering the above and in recognition of his amazing commitment and achievements with Ocee Design in his 29 years of employment with the business, the tournament will be renamed the ‘Tim Bloyce Cup’ in his honour.” The cost of entering a team of seven is £500 (+ VAT) To book, visit https://bit.ly/ TimBloyceCup22

Wood Waste Technology helps another exhibition and interiors company save money A Midlands creative and exhibition company has purchased a wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology to save money on waste disposal costs and obtain free heating for its workshop. Lone Wolf Creative Ltd, based in Staffordshire, has over 30 years’ experience in the design, build, manufacture and installation of award winning exhibition stands, eye-catching interiors and retail environments. Since the company was established in 2018, the Lone Wolf team has been keen to get a solution for all the timber, MDF and other wood waste that is generated as a result of its manufacturing process. MD, Steve Bowman, had seen a wood waste heater in action at another business, so was keen to purchase one. Steve explains: “Having experienced the benefits of a wood waste heater first-hand in another

business, investing in a wood waste heater was a no-brainer. Instead of throwing away our waste and spending around £1000 a month on skips, we could burn our wood waste to create free heating and save the company an extra £300 or so a month by not having to purchase fuel for the diesel heater! We worked out that within six

months the wood waste heater would have paid for itself – so we ordered one!” The wood waste heater Steve had used before was supplied by Wood Waste Technology, so he just picked up the phone and spoke to MD, Kurt Cockroft. After a survey and a quote, Steve ordered a WT5 for his 3500ft2 workshop in Tamworth. Steve said: “We’re absolutely delighted with the heater. It’s not just the cost-saving benefits, it’s just such a great piece of kit that is so easy to use and operate. The heater warms up quickly each morning, much quicker than our old diesel heaters which used to take ages to warm up the workshop! “Many of the exhibition stands we produce can be one-off projects, meaning that the stands come back to us to be disposed of. It’s great knowing that we can dispose of them sustainably and responsibly, and convert the waste wood to heat

rather than sending more waste to landfill. I’m really pleased we’ve invested in one.” MD of Wood Waste Technology, Kurt Cockroft adds: “We’re delighted that Lone Wolf Creative is benefitting from its investment in a wood waste burner. We’re finding many exhibition companies are looking at biomass solutions due to the amount of waste wood that is generated in that industry.” Wood Waste Technology offers a full range of wood waste heaters, from small hand fired units to larger fully automatic systems, and offers site survey and design, as well as manufacture, installation and ongoing maintenance. The company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. 01785 250400 www.woodwastetechnology.com www.grossuk.co.uk

Insight What type of racking do I need? For over 55 years, family-run firm Stakapal has produced storage and racking for warehousing and manufacturing industries across the UK. Nick Betteley, technical director at Stakapal, advises what to consider when choosing racking for your warehouse. When it comes to selecting the correct storage option there can be numerous challenges. In furniture and joinery manufacturing there are many different lengths and quantities of products which are difficult to store. From panel products and sheet materials to softwoods and hardwoods, you need to maximise the available space in your building, increase throughput and also minimise stock damage. You need to consider the type of mechanical handling equipment you are using, plus the available storage options for any handloaded product ranges. Stakapal’s own in-house design and project teams have provided a range of turnkey solutions for the industry. We are the only manufacturer to produce cantilever racking and pallet racking, as well as a full range of warehouse racking systems, from within the UK. Whatever you are storing we offer a solution: Cantilever racking When storing long lengths of product, cantilever racking offers the perfect solution. This type of racking consists of vertical upright columns with arms attached at variable heights. Arms can be adapted to accommodate specific load bearing requirements and designed to suit any pack size to fully maximise the available area. Single-sided racks can fit flush against the wall, while double-sided configurations create storage on either side of the central column. Our full range includes conventional, free path and guided aisle cantilever racking. Pallet racking Our Stakrak SR2000 series pallet racking offers a low budget alternative for storing low volumes of panel products and sheet materials. Our comprehensive range of rack frames and beams ensure that there is a solution for any storage challenge. A-frame / vertical racks For hand-picked items, you could opt for our A-frame / vertical racks. This type of racking

system stores vertically with the item’s length resting on a sloped frame shaped like an ‘A’. It can be configured as single-sided for storing against a wall or double-sided if you have available floor space. Pigeon hole racking For relatively small, hand-loaded quantities, our pigeon hole racks make it easy to access specific product ranges which are stored horizontally in separate compartments. The pigeon holes are divided by vertical beams which can either be fixed in place or adjustable dependent upon storage needs. Safety first The manufacturing industry is safety conscious, and we support this through our membership with SEMA (Storage Equipment Manufacturers Association) – a leading voice within the warehouse industry. As full members of SEMA, our products are independently tested, which guarantees they have been designed, manufactured, and installed to rigorously defined standards. Stakapal’s commitment to safety continues by ensuring that our in-house installers working on your site are registered and put through SEIRS (Storage Equipment Installers Registration Scheme) – a unique initiative from SEMA which trains on the safe and correct way to install racking. Racking systems qualify as work equipment and, under PUWER, it is your responsibility to ensure they are in good working order. The HSE recommends using a SEMA Approved Racking Inspector (SARI) who is trained and continually assessed to industry standards. Following the installation of our racking, our own in-house SARI’s offer this facility to our customers on an annual basis. We visit each site to undertake a comprehensive inspection and prepare a detailed report. 01543 278123 sales@stakapal.co.uk www.stakapal.co.uk

Simplify your design to manufacturing workflow with Microvellum In such a fast-paced world, homeowners and architects have come to expect quick turn arounds on projects – not only do they want their projects done ahead of schedule, but they also expect you, as a manufacturer, to respond quickly to their changes and demands for mass customisation. According to Daniel Mesecke, account manager for Microvellum, many manufacturers rely on several different design and manufacturing software applications. For some, it can be difficult to keep up with change requests and remain profitable. “I speak with a lot of manufacturers that depend on multiple steps to complete a project, utilising several different software applications and processes,” says Daniel. “This may involve creating estimates in one software, drawing projects in CAD software such as AutoCAD, engineering products in a separate cabinet or modeling software, creating CNC machine programs in yet another disconnected CAM program and relying on other software or manual processes to fill in the gaps before products can make their way into assembly. “For some, this system may work, but most will admit they don’t have the power to accelerate the way they need to grow their company.” Microvellum specialises in helping woodworkers streamline the way they work with one solution. Users of Microvellum’s AutoCADbased software rely on one platform for the entire design to manufacturing process. All project data is stored in one central database that can be accessed for estimating, design, drafting, engineering, production data and reporting. “Imagine a solution where your team is all working from the same data,” continues Daniel. “Your drafting team is using the products that your estimators configured and included in

“When you align your team behind one platform that has the power to streamline the way your team works, you remove friction, lower risk and increase your profits” their bid – the same ones your engineers built for mass customisation. Now, imagine being able to advance the projects to your factory for production from one application. This is what you get with a Microvellum solution. “And when that inevitable request to change one or more a product sizes or configurations comes, imagine having a platform where all your changes are kept in sync automatically – 2D drawings and sections required for architects or homeowner approval are updated, 3D models are modified so you can visually verify that your modifications are what your client expected,

machine tool paths have been adjusted and all other data needed for reporting and production is updated. All you need to do is reprocess the project. “Now, think about what would need to happen to make those same modifications when you use three, four, or possibly five separate applications.” Microvellum’s platform combines the power of AutoCAD® and the flexibility of Excel® – enabling users of the system to have complete control over the parametric intelligence built into every product – features such as 2D drawings and sections, 3D models, construction options, machining, hardware and warning messages. Users can make use of the extensive cabinet, wardrobe, fixtures, toilet partition and office furniture libraries as is or choose to customise or build their own unique products. “I like to tell people that, remaining profitable is about lowering risk,” concludes Daniel. “When you align your team behind one platform that has the power to streamline the way your team works, you remove friction, lower risk and increase your profits.” To learn more about Microvellum or to request a free assessment of your design to manufacturing workflows, visit www. Profile The Swiss cutting systems expert, in the form of its wholly-owned UK subsidiary, is pulling the UK furniture market into sharper focus. John Legg met with Zund UK’s sales and marketing director, Dean Ashworth, and senior applications technician Jamie Taylor.

Cutting a dash toward the UK furniture industry

Part of the Zund UK showroom in St Albans

Oliver and Karl Zund

A family-owned business, Zund Systemtechnik was established in Switzerland in 1984, and across Europe and worldwide the Zund brand has become synonymous with precision, performance and reliability where it has successfully been designing, producing and marketing modular cutting systems. Zund UK was established in St Albans in late 2017, since when it has become a successful supplier within its traditional markets of graphics, packaging, signage and display. The company has also found success in the broader leather products sector and the rapidly growing market for technical textiles and composites. More recently the business has begun to

address the UK furniture market of upholstered furniture and bedding sectors, where it hopes to make a similar impression. I recently spent some time with Zund UK’s sales and marketing director, Dean Ashworth, at the company’s impressive office and showroom in St Albans, Hertfordshire. Dean explains the company’s UK stance: “We operate across many industries in the UK we have had considerable success in our key markets since Zund UK was set up. When myself and managing director, Nicki Kay came into the business in early 2018, we had a specific remit to diversify the business, and to date we made impressive strides in all our targeted markets, and now our focus

Jamie Taylor, Zund UK senior applications technician

includes the UK furniture sector. “Across the world, in Europe and here in the UK, Zund has proven the efficiency of its technology and its approach to customers who use our technology for fabric, leather and other textiles. This experience helps us to readily generate partnerships with the upholstered furniture and bed/mattress manufacturers, a market which we feel has considerable potential for our digital cutting technology,” says Dean. Currently on display at the professional St Albans showroom are Zund’s S3, G3 and D3 machines in a range of configurations with specific functions in mind. It’s typically the impressive D3 which would be of interest for the majority of operators in the furniture industry. “Potential customers are very welcome to book a session to test and appraise the machines using their own materials and cutting patterns,” says Jamie Taylor, Zund UK’s senior applications technician. “All our machines are incredibly well designed for their purpose and, being Swiss made, are put together with outstanding focus on quality components and precision. “Generally speaking, within the furniture textilespecific arena, we sell more D3 variants which all have two cutting heads working independently in tandem on the single piece. The D3 comes in a range of sizes from 1880, 2270, 2740 and 3210mm x 3200mm and features a highly flexible tool configuration which is available on both beams. “As a default, we will suggest always going single-ply, but many people have the mindset that going for multi-ply because it’s all about output … but what you find with single-ply is that it’s a more accurate cut, there is less wastage and it cuts quicker than a multi-ply cover – on fabric we are cutting at a 1m per second – and that’s just one roll!” says Jamie. “And that’s a big thing, to try to change that mindset,” says Dean, “but what we find there’s a number of drivers for that – the need for

increased flexibility, JIT production, and of course the price of textiles fabrics are going through the roof! In some cases we have common cut lines, so with multi-ply you need that buffer to accommodate the squashing of the material when they’re built up, but with Zund cutters you can share common cut lines so there’s zero waste between. “You also don’t have the encapsulation material, and if you’re laying up multiple plies, the vacuum loses its effectiveness. We’ve run comparison trials against other technology available and the overall result was that we were more productive – not just in terms of speed and getting the products out the door, but both in terms of operating costs, overall efficiency, costs of running, also ROI.” But still, many will hold fast to their beliefs that only a multi-ply solution will do for them. Dean reiterates his point further: “We’ve carried out a number of case studies where customers have been absolutely adamant saying ‘there is no way your equipment will be more efficient or more productive cutting single-ply, as opposed to what we do and what we’ve always done’! And it’s not just a UK point of view, Dean says this a global misconception that the company sees all too frequently. “It’s there because it’s

D3 2XL-3200 with Projection System

always been there, and it’s always easy to do what you’ve always done. Changing that mindset will be a challenge but what we always say to customers or potential customers, or people that are open to moving with technological developments, is test us out... tell us the startto-finish time and throughput of your production process and we can absolutely demonstrate the performance efficiency of the our cutters.” One of the key tenets of the Zund technology is that it is highly versatile, almost all installations are bespoke, yet at the same time they are also future-proof – two key issues to bear in mind when carrying out any significant investment. Dean says: “Being modular by design, Zund machines are made to be versatile and so have future proofing built-in. So for example, a furniture maker goes down a certain route on day one of their purchase, but their business evolves a little later down the road, for him to adapt it’s not a huge investment, it’s a small tool to slot into a universal module to enable that business to evolve. “Another thing that sets Zund apart, especially in the UK, is our unrivalled after sales support service. We currently have 19 field-based service engineers – and we’re in the market hiring more at the moment – so any customer with a care plan is guaranteed next-day on-site support.” Describing Zund UK’s current customer base, Dean says: “We have cutters installed and operating across the UK in all different sectors – many of which have been operational for up to 30 years. “Unfortunately, he added, “that doesn’t really help me as sales and marketing director, but it does stand as an appropriate testament to the innate quality and robust performance characteristics of our machines. Striebig: A case in point A satisfied client sings the praises of TM Machinery’s team and product portfolio following receipt of a third Striebig Compact ... With 75 years of experience in building highquality wooden cases, crates and cardboard boxes, Alban Cases Ltd has built-up an enviable client list, working with established names like McLaren Automotive, Aspreys, Aston Martin, News International and Red Bull. Already owners of two Striebig Compact vertical panel saws – which are currently shared with its sister company, Alban Shipping Ltd – the Luton-based manufacturer has invested in a third Striebig Compact, dedicated to the production of wood and panel-based cases and creates. “If you’re looking to store, ship or protect an item, our team can manufacture a unique solution that meets the demands of any job,” begins Adam Blacow, office manager at Alban Cases. “Every case we make is bespoke and we don’t require a minimum order quantity. Depending on the weight and size of the item, we will use 9-18mm thick 8x4 plywood sheets or sustainable timber up to four metres long. “The base is either formed of planks or reinforced with soft-wood batons. This lends itself to huge order variation and the need for flexible machining. This month alone has seen us complete an order consisting of over 90 cases. 80 of which were different sizes.” In the last 12-months, demand for the company’s cases and crates has grown significantly, resulting in the company adapting its business model and focusing almost exclusively on the wood case and crate market. “Our two original Striebig’s were running at full capacity,” explains Adam. “In order for us to keep up with growing demand, fulfil more orders and maintain our 7-10 day lead time, we needed to invest in another vertical panel saw to cut our material to size. “It was always going to be a Striebig,” admits

Adam. “We’ve been running them for over 15 years and they’ve been a great asset to our business. They are built to last, have remained consistently accurate and get the job done with zero fuss. They’re also a firm favourite with the team, who rarely use our table saw.” When sourcing his third Striebig, Adam considered a more automated model with optimisation software, like the Standard S or Control, to simplify the cutting process even more, but it was TM Machinery that suggested a

like-for-like Compact due to the amount of cuts they would be performing and their preferred sheet sizes. “TM looked at our operation and what we wanted to achieve and a higher spec model was simply not required. The Compact offered us everything we needed: flexibility, simple set-up and pin-point accuracy. It was also a cheaper option, which shows the integrity of TM’s sales team. They gave us their honest opinion and it was the right call for us.”

The model was teamed with an AL-KO Mobil Jet 160, which offers quiet operation, effective dust extraction and a manual filter shaker. It’s the ideal solution for single-machine extraction and a fraction of the price a static dust extraction system would cost to design and install. Since the new saw was installed six months ago, it’s certainly been put to good use. “It’s allowing us to be much more flexible,” says Adam. “We’ve been able to fulfil urgent jobs and cater for last minute order changes more easily. We’re now completing more than 30 crates a week and have the means to take on more orders without increasing our labour costs. “It’s also streamlined our production. Our

Homag machinery is the brand of choice for Dashwood Interiors Dashwood Interiors is reaping the benefits of Homag’s Sawteq B-130 panel dividing saw, Edgeteq S-200 edgebanding machine and Drillteq V-200. Located in central London and founded in 2000, London Pro-Fitters is one of the most prestigious providers of construction focused interior installation and renovation services. The company delivers these services to both commercial and domestic markets for a variety of businesses and individual homes. Three Homag machines for a new business venture To start the in-house manufacture of a range of made-to-measure furniture and custom cabinetry, London Pro-Fitters’ MD, Ali Mohamed, set up a new company which trades under the name of Dashwood Interiors. Mohamed invested in three Homag woodworking machines for the company to produce kitchen cabinetry, bedroom units, and

fitted wardrobes. This included the purchase of Homag’s Sawteq B-130 panel dividing saw. Although this is the smallest saw in the Homag range, it is equipped as standard with everything needed for cutting single panels and small batches. In addition, it offers great value for money, costing little more than a well-equipped sliding table saw whilst providing a much more precise and efficient cutting process. The second piece of Homag technology Mohamed acquired for the new company was the Edgeteq S-200 edgebanding machine. Homag’s edgebanders are renowned for always producing high-quality edge processing. The Edgeteq S-200 processes workpieces with joining and profile trimming and is fully equipped with a precision glueing unit.

Homag’s Drillteq V-200, a flexible and space-saving vertical CNC wood processing centre was the third machine acquired for the business. A robust and versatile machine, it can be used for drilling, trimming and grooving. It is particularly well-suited to just-in-time production for the trade business sector, and for custom production in both small and large companies. Powerful brand of choice “For the new company venture I needed powerful machinery capable of producing multiple bespoke kitchens and bedroom units each day,” explains Mohamed. “I selected Homag machinery firstly because of the great Homag product and after-sales support service reviews I had read in the trade press, and secondly because each piece of equipment has a small footprint and thus offered great space-saving capabilities, not to mention good value for money. “The three Homag machines that we’ve invested in have been consistently operating since November 2021. I am delighted with the machines’ reliability and operational performance, along with the commendable service that the Homag team delivers.” For a demonstration or more information on Homag’s machinery or software, contact Adele Hunt at Homag UK on 01332 856424. info-uk@homag.com www.homag.com

MB Split Belt machine the perfect partner for lacquer & primer sanding Lacquer sanding is a very difficult task in the production of furniture and joinery components. Many factors have an influence on a desired result and only the combination of the correct aggregate and abrasives configuration, in conjunction with certain programmable sanding parameters, can offer a perfect result. MB Maschinenbau has many years of experience in lacquer sanding in the Roba Split Belt line and has developed a machine that meets these high expectations. Based on the Roba Tech philosophy that only a large sanding area provides enough performance for best results, MB developed the

“Based on the Roba Tech philosophy that only a large sanding area provides enough performance for best results, MB developed the “Split Belt” sanding aggregate”

“Split Belt” sanding aggregate. This combines the advantages of a large sanding area in contact with the work piece, while working with and against the part transport direction. An additional possibility to oscillate the split belt unit with up to 30° helps to optimise the result. In conjunction with the MB Superflex brushes – which are optimised for lacquer sanding – the

Split Belt unit, placed at the machine exit, is responsible for the final finish in the longitudinal direction. Since most work pieces need a cross processing to sand the recessed profiles across to the transport direction, as well as the right and left edges, two cross belt sanding units are placed at the machine entrance.

41

Having a processing width of 200mm each, the first cross unit works from right to left, while the second from left to right. This ensures a perfect sanding of all transversal grooves and longitudinal edges. The combination of cross and longitudinal sanding in one machine thus enables a smooth and effective processing in all areas. Upon request the machine can be equipped with a pressure roller system for holding down small and difficult parts and a cleaning aggregate at the machine end. The key advantages to the MB Split Belt are: • Large abrasive quantities allow low sanding speeds at better effectiveness • Optimised solution for lacquer/sealer sanding • A split sanding belt in conjunction with two cross belt aggregates guarantee a uniform sanding in four directions • Free PLC programmable sanding parameters to optimise results • An optimised vacuum transport system guarantees the secure transport of even small parts John Penny Woodworking Machinery has a comprehensive showroom and test facility and would be happy to conduct any sanding trials you may require. Fittings & Components Unlocking vital flexibility with sliding solutions Manufacturers, joiners and installers could unlock huge new opportunities through sliding doors, with homeowners now needing their kitchens to be flexible enough for multiple purposes and suitable for everyone in the household. According to new research, socialising, homeworking and exercising are amongst the most popular activities for consumers to carry out in their kitchens, aside from cooking. The findings from Häfele UK, which questioned 2,009 homeowners across the UK, found that 15% of homeowners want to be able to change the function of the room on demand, for example by closing off areas to hide mess or change the use of the space. As part of the research, 42% of respondents said they don’t like not being able to shut away different parts of their kitchen space, while 43% said they think broken plan layouts – those with the ability to close and open up different areas using structures, like sliding doors – are a better use of space. However, 33% of people admitted they don’t know how to create a zoned layout for different activities. Sliding doors are a key tool in creating physical and visual connections in a space, as well

as carving out specific areas for designated purposes through broken plan designs. A great alternative to traditional swinging doors, interior sliding and folding doors save space and are ideal for creating flexible, multi-purpose rooms by breaking up larger, open-plan layouts, or concealing certain areas. And there are lots of sliding door design and installation tricks that can be used to maximise the functionality of the kitchen, depending on the needs of the household – whether that be creating a hidden home office, integrating a playroom that can be closed away at the end of the day or shutting off laundry areas. Straight sliding doors can be installed in a number of different ways in the home; when used in open-plan living, straight sliding doors

can split a large space into smaller, distinct rooms. Pocket doors, which slide back into a recess in a wall, achieve the same outcome but require less floor and wall space, making them particularly effective when working with more compact floorplans. Meanwhile, folding sliding doors are a modern, stylish and practical alternative. Sometimes referred to as internal bi-fold doors, internal folding sliding doors are typically made up of between two and six doors, which are linked together using sliding door gear. These systems allow the doors to fold up on themselves in a concertina style shape. When not in use, they don’t take up too much floor space and when in action, they can close off areas like kitchenettes while also acting as a great design feature. To help the industry achieve brilliant designs, and with one of the largest sliding door ranges in the UK, Häfele has developed its free Sliding Door Specification Service to get the best solution for every project. Users simply submit a top level design of a space and door dimensions required, and Häfele’s team will build a list of materials and quote. Even better, the service can be used together with Häfele to Order, where all sliding door gear can be cut, assembled, packed, labelled and shipped to your bespoke requirements. All in all, it delivers one of the most efficient sliding door gear services available on the market today. www.hafele.co.uk/en

Lamello: A workshop essential

Lamello’s handheld Zeta P2

Martin Howlett has a passion for woodwork. With over 20 years of experience in the woodworking industry and time studying his craft at the renowned Rycotewood furniture making college and Edinburgh College of Art, Martin has spent the last decade producing high-end, bespoke fitted furniture for his own clients in Sussex. But, whilst Martin’s creativity holds no bounds, his use of traditional tools and techniques were proving a hindrance, seeing him turn to Swiss-fixings specialist, Lamello for a solution. “As a boy, I enjoyed nothing more than playing in my father’s workshop and by the age of 10, I was woodturning and making things for my friends,” beams Martin, owner of Martin Howlett Furniture. “Fast forward to 2022 and I still enjoy the practical and technical-design side of cabinet making. I love talking to my clients and getting a real sense of who they are and what they want. My work is a reflection of them and I get great satisfaction from designing furniture that is unique to them.”

Martin Howlett

Before he started using Lamello’s joining solutions, Martin would use a combination of biscuits, sash clamps and screws to join panels, but it was an arduous process. “Looking back, I knew some traditional techniques like this were a faff but, like so many cabinet makers, I just accepted it. I’d seen Lamello’s connectors advertised but I was sceptical. How could a small piece of plastic offer me the strength of a screw?” It was only after a demonstration from Lamello’s UK sales representative that Martin could see the potential. “I remember stepping back and thinking, ‘wow’”. I was blown away. No more no screws, no drilling, no clamps. I had to see it to believe it and believe it I did!” Fully converted, Martin now uses a range of fixings. “I use the Tenso-P when making draws and fitting scribe panels on-site because they’re completely hidden. They’re also brilliant for fixing

trimmings and lippings onto veneered shelves. I’ve even used them on worktops to create a perfectly flush joint.” The Clamex-P14 is Martin’s go-to when building carcases. “They’re fully-detachable, making assemble quick and easy and they remain strong,” he explains. “They also guarantee a perfect join every time. When it comes to fixing shelves on site, the detachable Divario-P is super quick and has reduced the time it takes me to fit a fixed shelf from 15 minutes to just two minutes thanks to its slide-in insertion.” The time-saving credentials don’t stop there. “Building a carcass is over 50% quicker when using the Clamex-P. Last week, I jointed-up 15 carcasses in a day and built a base, middle and top unit in that time, too. If I was relying on biscuits, clamps and screws, it would have taken three days. This isn’t uncommon. Only yesterday, >>

“Lamello gives me so much confidence in what can be achieved in a set time, without compromising on aesthetic or quality”

48 FITTINGS & COMPONENTS

I made up 17 drawer boxes using the Clamex-P and that was between other jobs. It’s so quick and there’s no drilling or need for pilot holes.” Due to the fixing’s flexibility, Martin designs all his products with Lamello’s range in mind. He says, “They allow me to tackle jobs differently and simplify things in my workshop.” This is clear in the recent installation of a wardrobe that needed to be fitted into a second story bedroom. “There wasn’t a screw or a clamp in sight,” Martin explains. “I stamped out all the joints with my Zeta-P and inserted Clamex-P fixings into each panel before transporting them to site. What would have taken me over a day to install only took me a morning. What’s more, when the client later decided they wanted a fixed shelf added to the wardrobe once it had been installed, I was able to use the Divario-P connectors to slide a shelf into position. “Without the use of Lamello’s Divario-P fixings, I’d have had to have moved the large wardrobe and attempted to screw in from the side so each hole was hidden or use a baton and screws to support the shelf if the wardrobe was too heavy to move. But, when you’re spending five figures on a wardrobe, visible screw holes and batons are not acceptable. Lamello proved instrumental to the overall aesthetic of this project.

Martin uses a range of Lamello fixings including the Clamex P-14, Divario-P and Tenso-P

“To those that ask, ‘what’s wrong with a 45mm screw and biscuits?’, I can’t stress the timesaving credentials enough,” Martin continues.

quality. My advice to those yet to try Lamello: It is an essential item for those building carcases. It should be in your workshop. No ifs, buts

“The whole kit paid for itself in just three jobs because of the amount of time it saved me. It is phenomenally quick and helps me manage my time effectively. “Lamello gives me so much confidence in what can be achieved in a set time, without compromising on aesthetic or

or maybes. Don’t be put off by the price tag because what you get back in time will far outweigh what you could save by using more traditional joining solutions. It saves me days in a single job and I wouldn’t be without it.” www.lamello.co.uk

Differentiation in action: the growing importance of aesthetics in storage Most kitchens are now sold with some form of storage solution, so differentiation is increasingly important. With this in mind, one of the main developments in internal storage is the growing importance of aesthetics. Two specific strategies from Hettich in line with this trend are integrated lighting and profiles/ capes for drawer sides. The Hettich AvanTech YOU drawer system offers the option of integrated lighting, with a system which simply clips into place and gives a premium feel to a kitchen. The triangular lighting profile can be fitted either to illuminate the inside of open drawers or to direct light outwards. The system is based on an even 4,000K LED light, with a practical, USB-rechargeable battery pack to provide the energy, so there is no need for costly electrical connections. The lights switch on and off automatically with the opening and closing of the drawer. Larder units spring to mind as an attention-grabbing use of this technology. Drawer Profiles and Capes Sticking closely to the individualisation theme are Hettich’s Profiles and Capes for AvanTech YOU. Profiles cover the top profile of the drawer side, while Capes cover both the top and outer side. Hettich offers a range of Profiles and Capes, but manufacturers can get creative with their own ideas. This could include anything from subtle vinyl wraps to match or complement cabinet designs to, at the other end of the scale, cartoon characters, perhaps for bedroom furniture manufacturers looking to appeal to the children’s market.

“In the next couple of years, we see an increasing trend for individualisation in internal storage, along with more active interest in sustainability” The market After the initial shock of Covid, Hettich’s sales for internal kitchen storage have been strong and the group’s sales were up 26% in 2021 compared with the previous year. “It is difficult to know how much of this can be attributed directly to home working, for example, but spending more time at home certainly focused people’s attention on their interiors,” says Hettich UK marketing manager, Colin Patterson. “This probably encouraged a desire to introduce premium aspects into new kitchens, such as

lighting and individual design elements. In the next couple of years, we see an increasing trend for individualisation in internal storage along with more active interest in sustainability, as customers seek reassurance that the products they buy have been produced responsibly from the point of view of climate change. “We will also see customers prioritise maximising the efficiency with which they use their available space. Larder storage is better understood and appreciated by most potential purchasers today, and is likely to become a more dominant feature in kitchens of all sizes.” Hettich was founded in 1888 and is today one of the world’s largest and most successful manufacturers of furniture fittings. Over 6,700 members of staff in almost 80 countries work together to develop intelligent technology for furniture. The Hettich brand stands for consistent values – for quality and innovation, reliability and closeness to customers. Despite its size and international significance, Hettich has remained a family-owned business. Being independent of investors means that the company has a free hand in shaping its future with a focus on the human element and sustainability. 0161 872 9552 info@uk.hettich.com www.hettich.com/uk

Panel Processing Pro Nesting keeps trimming on track Biesse’s Pro Nesting feature is now available as an option on every machine in its range, giving entry level users access to this tried and tested solution for edge-banding pre-drilled panels without any issues or inconsistencies. From Biesse’s perspective, the market has moved away from EVA (Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate) and towards PUR (Polyurethane) adhesive, on the basis that PUR offers better bond strength, which allows for a thinner glue line and improved product quality. A further advantage of PUR is that it is waterand heat-resistant, making it a practical choice for bathroom and kitchen furniture. The disadvantage of PUR is that it is more expensive than EVA, and it comes with a greater maintenance responsibility. After PUR sets, it is very difficult to remove, meaning that equipment used to dispense PUR must be cleaned and purged regularly. A failure to do this can result in a hefty repair bill. In addition, PUR must be protected from moisture when it is not in use, which means the tank must be removed and correctly stored in a recommended device during extended downtimes. The ideal scenario, therefore, is to use EVA for edgebanding less aesthetically critical components, and to use PUR for outer fascias and door fronts, where a high quality finish and a thinner glue line is essential. The main issue here is that switching between the two requires the glue pots to be taken off the machine and cleaned, which results in significant downtime. Alternatively, additional spare glue pots can be changed when required, but this can become cost prohibitive. Biesse brings best of both worlds Biesse has eradicated these issues with the development of its Hybrid Glue Head –available on the AKRON 1300 series upwards. This innovation allows users to change from one type of glue to another in less than 20 minutes, or to execute a colour change in less than 15 minutes, thanks to an inbuilt CIP (Clean in Place) system. There is no need to remove the head from the machine for cleaning or to replace it with a different one – it is simply a case of selecting a

switch to purge the system of residual adhesive, pouring cleaning granules into the head and purging when at temperature. Changing the setting from EVA to PUR (or vice versa) to ensure the machine is melting the glue at the correct temperature rounds off the process. Mess-free operation, fast changeovers and insitu cleaning are the key advantages of Biesse’s Hybrid Glue Head. In addition, whereas on some systems, the residual adhesive flows from the glue pot and has to be collected manually, Biesse’s solution incorporates an automatic system that drains and collects the glue from below. NC Control matches coat weight to substrate The Hybrid Glue Head can also be supplied with NC (Numerical Control) of the glue gate to optimise the amount of glue that is applied according to the material that is being edgebanded. Rather than relying on the operator manually adjust machine settings for each material, NC control allows the user to preprogramme the optimum coat weight for each substrate, so the operator simply has to make a selection from a menu of preset programmes. This not only saves on adhesive, but assist with minimising the glue line and improving product quality. In addition, having NC control on the glue gate gives the added advantage of automatic cleaning of the glue roller at set periods when a panel is not present. Flexible configurations The Hybrid Glue Head has two options: a 0.8kg and a 1.5kg glue head. The 1.5kg head is a manual fill unit that lends itself to lower volume operators wanting an on-demand solution without the need for a pre-melting unit. Thanks to an in-built glue level sensor, a pop-up alert notifies the operator when the glue level is low. Operations that use a high volume of glue will usually opt for the 0.8kg head in combination with Biesse’s TM20 pre-melter. This supports continuous, high-speed production as whenever the glue level drops, the pre-melter replenishes the glue head on demand. www.biesse.com/uk

Unlock your creativity with the dp-fantasy collection from Decorative Panels The striking dp-fantasy collection is part of the dp-décor range from Decorative Panels Lamination. This range of surface finishes comprises an array of stylish paper foils ideally suited for a whole host of interiors. Constant design innovation and trend analysis has resulted in a collection of designs that will inspire and enable manufacturers and specifiers in the challenge of an ever-changing marketplace. The fantasy collection brings together realistic finishes that do not compromise on performance. From the Geometric print of Trigolo in both black and white, to the more subtle linen finishes of Hessian and Linen Twist, there is a design for all styles. Greta CF82 is a classic herringbone design which is extremely on trend, flourishing from

the recent demand for geometric prints. Oxide Concrete CF83 adds a cool industrial edge to any furniture piece or kitchen. For a more toneddown feel it can be paired with any of the brand’s pastel colours from Dust Pink CU35 to Fjord CU28. For a statement look use Trigolo Black CF80 or Trigolo White CF81 on furniture fronts, or why not use both to create a bold monochrome design. Marble Rocks CF85 is available through special order and will instantly elevate your design to create a luxurious finish without the cost of processing the real thing. Both Hessian CF10 and Linen Twist CF01 are two neutral tones perfect for many homeowners wanting to create a peaceful interior. These combine well with muted greens to bring nature indoors. When you factor in the vast range of substrates available in various widths and thicknesses, with foils available ex-stock, the dp-decor range is a highly competitive offering. Advancements in material technology within the printing industry have brought incredibly elevated levels of design realism to the finished product. Digital

technology used in the creation of the artwork and the engraving of the printing cylinders, plus the development of the optical lacquer technology, have contributed to not only the visual appeal of designs but also added tactile qualities that have previously not been available. The surface resistance of paper foils has also increased, with the majority now being able to meet FIRA 6250 and BS6222-3 severe use so they can be used in kitchens, bathrooms, and bedrooms on all but worktops. Of course, one of the significant advantages of using paper foil as a surface material is that as well as being flat laminated to board it can be profile wrapped to provide fully matching parts, offering a perfect solution for framed doors, corner posts, pelmets, and any matching moulding requirements. Decorative Panels Lamination is constantly developing the range of designs available to ensure that the collection reflects the latest trends within the market. Quasar – rough-sawn, but a smooth operator

“Our bespoke range means that we can bring versatile décor to any space regardless of whether it’s a domestic or commercial setting”

Dark Grey, Light Grey & Ash

PANEL PROCESSING 65

When it comes to interior kitchen doors, it’s fair to say that – in most domestic and commercial premises – they are generally the main attraction. When it comes to Quasar’s impressive range of rough-sawn doors, they will certainly be a talking point. These bespoke kitchen doors are manufactured and finished, ready to fit for all Quasar’s clients. There’s no doubt that some species of wood lend themselves to a rustic appearance better than others, and Quasar’s rough-sawn door range offers the best that timber has to offer. The doors are cut from prime-grade timber and are available in Ash, Oak, Eucalyptus, Dark Grey Oak, Light Grey Oak and Satin Walnut, so there’s something to suit every interior décor style or commercial premises. The fact that the range is bespoke means that the doors are available in every width and length required. Equally, the fact that the doors are all-natural products means that no two rooms will ever be the same, so you’re guaranteed a unique, individual finish each time you install them. “We’re absolutely delighted to be able to offer this fantastic range of rough-sawn doors to our clients,’ says Quasar owner, Alan Dickson. “There’s no doubt that a piece of wood – particularly a rough-sawn piece of wood can have a massive impact on the aesthetic appeal of a room. “Our bespoke range means that we can bring versatile décor to any space regardless of whether it’s a domestic or commercial setting. Also, the fact that the doors are available in a range of shades and colours, with a range of finishes from matt to high gloss – and in the best prime-grade timbers available – means that there’s literally a shade or a colour to suit any home or commercial premises. “We’re increasingly finding that clients are

“With our new roughsawn range, the impact is even greater due to the sheer, natural beauty of the range of timbers” looking for that personalised, individual look for their homes or premises and the fact that the doors are all made from natural products will guarantee that individual touch, since no two doors will ever look the same. “Doors are the main attraction when it comes to interior design, and they’re definitely a vital component. Most people buy homes or rent commercial premises where the doors are already installed, and so a lot of people won’t give the doors much thought. When we show them how much changing doors can change the whole look and ‘vibe’ of a room, they’re simply blown away. With our new rough-sawn range, the impact is even greater due to the sheer, natural beauty of the range of timbers. “I would advise any client to invest in good

doors for their homes or commercial premises, whether they’re completely remodelling or simply looking for a change to the overall appearance of the room. “The door colour is an important factor to consider, and we’re delighted to be able to offer a range of woods and colours. Those customers who are looking for neutral shades will be attracted primarily to the Ash or Light Grey Oak option, while those looking for a bolder look – one in which the door contrasts with the wall, thereby making the door the focal point – will be drawn more to the Eucalyptus or Satin Walnut. “Either way, Quasar’s new rough-sawn range of doors has something for everyone!” 028 79 659694 www.wearequasar.com

Hill’s Panel Products and trading partner, Blum, highlight shared values

Partnership is a theme that features prominently in the ethos of board, doors and fittings specialists Hill’s Panel Products (HPP) and its supplier Blum. HPP, which has its manufacturing and supply headquarters in Oldham and a satellite branch with trade counter in Sheffield, has been trading for more than 30 years and has been a leading supplier of Blum’s high-quality kitchen and furniture fittings, drawers and accessories for most of that time. Blum, which has operations worldwide and delivers to more than 120 markets, has previously welcomed an HPP delegation to its HQ in Austria, and has recently hosted two HPP directors – Dan Mounsey, Marketing and Business Development, and Gareth Evans, Sales – at its UK base to share its ‘Moving Ideas’ corporate vision and messaging for the future. “It was evident there are a lot of synergies between Blum and ourselves,” says Dan Mounsey. “We are both family-owned; we share similar attitudes towards business, innovation, service, quality, continuous improvement and trust, as well as how we treat and value our people, and our attitudes towards sustainability.” Blum’s ‘Moving Ideas’ message presented to Dan and Gareth is designed to appeal to the emotions that motivate consumers. It is based on seven pillars:

• • • •

Inspiration – pushing boundaries and moving ideas forward Innovation – improving what’s good today to be better tomorrow Quality of living – connecting products with real life use Services – ensuring they keep pace with

• • •

the ever-changing world Quality – continuous improvement in every aspect of the business Product range – product diversity that reflects current and future design trends Trust – providing substance to the Blum brand and what it aims to achieve

“We are both family-owned; we share similar attitudes towards business, innovation, service, quality, continuous improvement and trust, as well as how we treat and value our people, and our attitudes towards sustainability”

69

Dan adds: “Blum is a very impressive business with a multi-billion-euro turnover. It’s a brand that in many ways sells itself such is the quality and practicality of its products. “Moving Ideas is their key messaging that they want to get across over the coming months and years, and an important part of that will be via HPP through our partnership with them.” Both firms enjoy good staff retention records and recognise the value of apprenticeships and training to nurture talent. They also share strong sustainability credentials. Blum’s impressive environmental and energy policy features resource and energy management measures that include heat recovery systems, building insulation, intelligent heating control systems, ground water cooling and energy efficient lighting systems. It also makes a substantial number of deliveries by rail and utilises reusable cardboard packaging and an environmentally-friendly packaging system called ECO-Pack that was specially developed by Blum. HPP, meanwhile, is taking account of sustainability in everything it does from its vehicles, its processes and packaging to its dayto-day operations. Dan says: “We are certified as a zero land fill operator. We recycle as much as we can, and use our wood waste in biomass boilers to heat various buildings and facilitate some production processes, we also have multiple solar panel installations.

“We have moved from polystyrene corner protectors on our doors and worktops to pulpbased protectors and all of our deliveries are now paperless.” HPP is also working with its MFC suppliers to highlight that chipboard is a carbon positive material that stores more carbon than it releases, and that it can be recycled again after its 10-20 year lifecycle. www.hpponline.co.uk www.blum.com

Joinery, Window & Door Production Holz-Her’s new Linea 6015 beam saw – cutting through the confusion

The Linea 6015 offers over six square metres of storage space beneath the workings of the machine

What stops a smaller manufacturer buying a beam saw? For many, it comes down to three things: space, cost and operator skill. Holz-Her’s new Linea 6015 beam saw has been designed with all these factors in mind, however, offering you all the benefits of a beam saw, without the perceived disadvantages. Space can be a big problem for the smaller manufacturer, but not with the new Linea 6015 beam saw. With an operational footprint of just 6 x 4.7m, it requires the same amount of space as a sliding table panel saw. Plus, it’s also Cutting plans can be intuitively programmed from the Linea 6015’s multi-touch monitor

been designed with a 1,800mm sliding door to the side of the machine, giving you access to over 6m2 of usable storage space beneath the workings of the machine. The machine’s price tag and running costs may also surprise you. Designed to offer exactly what a smaller manufacturer needs, the new Linea 6015 boasts technology that cuts usage costs, labour costs and time. Thanks to Holz-Her’s energy-saving saw concept, it offers an energy saving of up to 46% with each cut and with its time-controlled shutdown, the overall running

costs of the machine remain low. Cutting cycles can also be reduced thanks to its three-sheet, book-cutting capabilities and with Opti-Cut software, the margin for error and material wastage is also lowered. Then there’s the Linea’s extreme cutting power. With its optional 11kW sawing unit, it’s perfectly suited to hard materials like solid wood and core board. It also makes the cutting of multiple sheets in one pass simple and effective. Its energy-saving saw blade has a maximum projection of 68mm and can be adjusted by 20-40mm, whilst its newly developed 2.2 kW optimised pre-scoring system has been designed to offer infinite adjustments with the motor running, saving on set-up time. Its electronically-controlled saw carriage – with a feed speed of 0-60m/min, return speed of 70m/min and cutting length of 3100mm – also offers extremely short cycle times and maximum productivity, whilst its softwarecontrolled bi-directional cutting feature, FCM (Fast Cut Mode) can cut grooves in the cutting direction as well as the return. This ensures the shortest possible cycle times for grooving. A light sensor also detects the end of the panel, optimising the cutting stroke.

The Linea 6015 features innovative clamp management

The Linea 6015 also comes with air cushioned 1,800 x 600mm support tables and optional end of table rollers to ensure panels can be manoeuvred around the bed without back strain or risk of panel damage when loading and unloading. Holz-Her’s floating clamp technology, which offers adjustable clamping pressure for delicate materials, also compensates for any irregularities in the panel stack using extremely precise linear guides that are guaranteed for 10 years – standing testament to the build quality of Holz-Her’s machinery range. The Linea 6015’s powerful software and intelligent cutting packages simplify the operations of the machine, whilst offering maximum precision and speed in every cut. Operated remotely or via the beam saw’s pivoting 21.5” multi-touch monitor, cutting plans can be intuitively programmed, with parts lists uploaded manually or imported from an ERP system as CSV files. Optimised prescoring system

Holz-Her’s Easy Label module

Further optimised material and off-cut management programmes are also available, with 3D real-time simulation offering greater insight into the cutting process and stacking sequence of finished workpieces. Holz-Her’s Easy Label module also opens up new possibilities for designing labels tailored to your production. From logos, edging information and data matrix codes for CNC machining to important workpiece information that assists with secondary machining, Industry 4.0 is a reality in the smallest of workshops. “Is a beam saw more capable and easier to

use than a sliding table panel saw?” says Paul Nightingale, national sales manager of Holz Her UK. “Does it need a less skilled operator? Can it up productivity? Can it deliver on precision? Yes, the Linea 6015 can. Holz-Her has been designing beam saws for many years and now we’ve condensed the very best cutting technology into a compact package that truly benefits the smaller manufacturer. “No longer restricted by size, operator skill or price tag, our new Linea 6015 beam saw offers a viable alternative to a traditional table saw.” www.holzher.co.uk

New Centauro Alfa Twin throughfeed door machining line

JOINERY, WINDOW & DOOR PRODUCTION 77

Following on from the successful Centauro Alfa CNC milling/ slotting machine, of which more than 60 have been installed in the UK to date, Centauro has introduced the all-new Alfa Twin model, which is a dedicated CNC milling machine for internal doors and frames. The main advantage of the Twin over the standard machine is that a door can be simultaneously machined on both sides at the same time, without having to manually move or turn it. The result is a machined door with three hinge recesses, lock slot, face plate recess and handle/key hole in approximately two minutes. In addition, it is possible to machine two linings/jambs – again, both at the same time. As standard, the Alfa Twin is equipped with six adjustable vacuum cups to hold the door in position while it is being machined. By utilising this system, both sides of the door can be fully machined without having to take into account the position of mechanical or pneumatic clamps, which, of course, are not needed. For machining of the lock slot and drilling/ slotting for the handle hole/key slot, there is a router head that automatically works in either the vertical or horizontal, and has a travel distance in the X axis of 2800mm and in the Y axis of 150mm (although optionally this can be extended to 600mm). On the opposite side there is a horizontal milling head that is used for producing the hinge recesses – again with a 2800mm X axis travel. On request it is possible to equip either one or both sides with an additional horizontal milling head that can be used to make the small pilot hole for hinge or lock screws and/or to machine

a square corner hinge or lock recess. Another option is the automatic linear tool changer for the main router. Fast and easy programming When processing linings/jambs, adjustable pneumatic clamps are fitted. Programming is extremely quick and simple, thanks to the latestgeneration 10in graphic colour touchscreen controller, with pre-installed electronic macro templates. Door width working capacity is maximum 950mm and minimum 650mm, but optionally this can be increased to 1100 and 800mm, respectively. Other options include motorised positioning of the door on driven belts, infeed and outfeed roller tables, and an up-rated router head motor of 5.6kW. Exclusive UK agent JJ Smith has an Alfa Twin set up and readily available for demonstration in its Liverpool showroom. The company believes this competitively priced machine will prove ideal for the many companies which need a quick,

simple and efficient machine for processing doors and linings. Already machines have been installed at Arnold Lavers - Manchester Branch, Deanta UK, Ian Firth and Door Linings.com. In addition to offering the Alfa and Twin models, JJ Smith also supplies a range of throughfeed, high-volume door production lines from specialist manufacturer Essepegi. 0151 549 1771 sales@jjsmith.co.uk www.jjsmith.co.uk

Meeting New the Document F 2022 Guidelines without spoiling timber windows With the new Document F of the Building Regulations due to come into effect on 15th June 2022, window manufacturers need to consider the design of their windows. The government announced changes to the building regulations designed not only to help the UK achieve net zero but also to improve ventilation. These changes affect both windows for new-builds and replacement for existing dwellings. The pandemic highlighted the benefits of natural ventilation in helping support the safety of residents and preventing the spread of airborne viruses. The new guidance details the updated requirements for ensuring that buildings in the UK have adequate means of ventilation provided for people in the building. There are two approved documents – ‘Approved Document F: Volume 1 applies to dwellings’ and ‘Approved Document F: Volume 2 applies to buildings other than dwellings’.

One of these means of ventilation is background ventilation – usually provided in the form of trickle vents. Under the ‘Control of ventilation’ the regulations state various requirements including, but not limited to: • Ventilation should be controllable, either manually or automatically. • Background ventilators should be at least 1700mm above floor level, to reduce cold draughts, but still be easy for the occupant to reach. • Background ventilators with automatic controls should also have manual override. • All rooms with external walls should have background ventilators. If a habitable room has no external walls, ventilation can be met via another habitable room that has openings to the outside which provides purge ventilation and background ventilation of at least 10,000mm2 equivalent area. The guidelines highlight that a window with a night latch position is not adequate for background ventilation, due to the risk of draughts, security issues and the difficulty in measuring the equivalent area. More detail on the minimum equivalent area of background ventilators for natural ventilation, the total number of ventilators required and the requirements for new and replacement windows is covered in the Document F guidelines. Failure to comply with the regulations can result in prosecution and an enforcement notice requiring the windows to be replaced or altered.

“The good news is that our new Timber Trickle Vents help you comply with the new guidelines without spoiling the look of your timber windows.” says Coastal MD, Loren Jenner. “Our TVT Timber Veneer Vent Set fits over the TVA Trickle Vent enabling the vent to be finished flush and in exact same colour/finish as your window.” The TVT Timber Veneer Vents bring many benefits to your timber window: • Available in three finishes – oak, pine or sapele – so whether you are staining or painting your timber windows the trickle vents will blend in perfectly with the finished window. • They fit flush to the surface of the window so they’re less obtrusive. • Made in two sizes to help achieve required air flow levels – the TVT242 Timber Vent Set combined with the TVA283 Trickle Vent provides an EA Air Flow of 3000mm2 and the TVT347 Timber Vent Set combined with the TVA389 Trickle Vent provides an EA Air Flow of 4300mm2. As Coastal head of marketing Neil Jones says, “Don’t devalue your carefully crafted timber windows by fitting any old trickle vent just to achieve compliance. These new TVT Timber Vent Sets are extremely subtle whilst providing background ventilation. They’re the ideal trickle vent combination for timber windows.” To request a sample of the Timber Veneer Vent sets or for more information on how Coastal can help you comply with the new guidelines, contact 01726 871 025 or sales@coastalgroup.com.

Unique advantages of Elcon vertical panel saws Elcon vertical panel saws offer world-leading cutting technology suitable for a wide range of materials, including wood-based panels, composites and non-ferrous metals. Amongst the many available options across the range, three key features are proving increasingly popular: electro-pneumatic scoring; Advance panel clamping and Limpio dust extraction. The electro-pneumatic scoring system is ideal when working with faced material to prevent chipping and breakout. The system allows pre-scoring of the panel using the main blade, crucially without the need for a separate scoring unit and the headaches that come with setting it. The system can be engaged and disengaged from conveniently positioned push button on the plunge arm. Effective and efficient dust can be hard to achieve on traditional wall saws. The patented and award winning Limpio extraction system from Elcon greatly reduces dust emissions by simultaneously extracting waste from both the front and rear of the panel. The saw blade runs in an almost completely enclosed area reducing dust emission values to less than 0.5mg/m3. The system is particularly advantageous when cutting large volumes of fibrous or cementitious material minimising airborne waste entering the operating area.

Traditionally with any vertical panel saw sheets are processed from the top down, with horizontal strips first cut prior to a secondary operation of crosscutting to finished sizes. The operator must use their trailing hand or wedges to support the strip during the horizontal cut to stop it falling back onto the blade.

The Advance system turns the cutting process on its head. Once the machine is loaded, clamps descend and grab the panel(s) from above, taking the full weight and allowing a single operator to work the material from the bottom up. Horizontal strip cuts sit on the base of the machine needing no additional support. Each strip can then be immediately crosscut while the rest of the board remains in the clamps minimising repeat panel handling. 82 JOINERY, WINDOW & DOOR PRODUCTION

Stairways cuts lead times and improves efficiency with Hoffmann Machine Co. As a highly reputable firm within the industry, Stairways Midlands manufactures a range of doors and staircases, but is probably best known for pioneering the production of the ‘door set’ for national housebuilders, architects and contractors. Privately owned and managed since it was founded in 1989 by Mr Roger Stevens, Stairways has rapidly grown to become one of the UK’s largest manufacturers of carpentry and joinery products. Starting as a small family business, it now boasts three midlands-based factory units that offer over 85,000ft2 of bespoke and mass production capacity using innovative machinery and a team of skilful, passionate workers. The second generation of the Stevens family, Mr. Neil Stevens and Mrs. Karen Wood are now sole directors.

Stairways is continuously looking for opportunities to improve and expand the services it offers; this includes the investment in new machinery to enhance and innovate the manufacturing process, with the aim to shorten lead times and increase overall in-house capacity whilst ensuring their process remains as efficient as possible from start to finish. The company found answers to these challenges in Hoffmann Machine Company. Stairways Midlands first became aware of Hoffmann Machine Co. about 22 years ago at the Woodmex Trade Show, buying its first machine in 2000 for its Southam Door Division. Following consultation with Hoffmann UK and Hoffmann’s design team in Germany, the chosen machine was the Hoffmann MS35-SF. This combination machine not only cuts the perfect mitres but simultaneously routers the dovetail slots to join the mitres with Hoffmann Keys. The machine also has an integrated crosscut saw which makes the square cut and controls the length of the upright section of the architrave. This machine configuration enables the production of the three elements of the architrave set, two uprights and one header, from a 6m bar length. Each machine cycle for these three elements takes approximately one

minute. Following the delivery of a second Hoffmann machine, Stairways now has the capacity for 1000 door-sets per week. The company was so impressed with the quality, accuracy and speed of these machines that it has expanded the range to include additional machines at its Welshpool Door Division to mitre glazing bead and at its Walsall Stair Division to mitre and join the handrails. Using Hoffmann machines is the more efficient way to mitre and join these products and is therefore a good selling point. It improves the finish and provides a stronger quality product. Stairways has recently replaced the original machine at Southam, which was still operational after 20 years in service and having been used nearly every working day since it was installed. The machine at Welshpool has also been updated by a new model, also with an integrated chop saw. Stairways continues to grow in both capacity and stature, acting as an industry leader with its level of innovation and investment. 01524 841500 info@hoffmann-uk.com www.hoffmann-uk.com

Infinitus Bespoke Interiors created an art deco inspired home in the heart of London, which included the re-fitting of bedrooms and bathrooms to incorporate smooth, clean lines, high gloss surfaces, mirror cladding and ambient lighting. “We decided on Medite MR and MTX as they by far offered the best solution to be able to achieve a polished, authentic art deco look,” says director at Infinitus Bespoke Interiors, Andrew Fishwick. “In the bathrooms and anywhere it was likely that the fittings would be in contact with water, we used MTX to ensure the longevity of the installation.” As acetylated MDF, MTX can be used in applications where normal MDF panels cannot, and still retains all the design, fixing, and machining flexibility of regular MDF panels. Its outstanding features will be demonstrated further at this year’s 2022 RHS Chelsea Flower Show. It is the main material used for the centrepiece of the Medite Smartply Building the Future Garden designed by multi-award-winning landscape architect and garden designer, Sarah Eberle. Medite Smartply further demonstrates the product’s limitless design capabilities on its own online MDF community site meditemakesitreal. com, which invites MDF enthusiasts to share work, gain inspiration and even win prizes that will enable the user to build bigger and better with MDF. www.mdfosb.com

Homag’s powerEdge Pro Duo is a proven precision all-rounder Homag’s track record of designing and manufacturing innovative CNC machining centres has established the brand as a global market leader. To enhance its popular CNC range, Homag developed the state-of-art technology used in its latest edge banding unit – the powerEdge Pro Duo. The accumulation of over 30 years of industryleading research in contour edge banding systems culminated in the evolution of this unit, which is available on Homag’s Centateq E-310, E-500 and E-700 CNC processing centres. One unit for all with first-time accuracy Designed with versatility and simplicity of use in mind, every component of the unit is equipped with the latest sensors and control algorithms, making it easier and quicker than ever to get the perfect edge. The latest model can produce the desired result from the very first workpiece. This means that fine adjustment or multiple test pieces are generally not required, even on challenging shapes. Using exact edge tracing and a feed roller with direct distance measurement, the powerEdge system guarantees that edging tape is applied precisely from start to finish. This creates options for designing shapes and achieving perfect results in 360-degree gluing even for the smallest components. The speed, temperature and contact pressure are defined at every point along the contour, with no restrictions on butt joint locations. The pressure roller applies the edge to the workpiece with a precise amount of force for a consistently even finish. With defined temperature technology, the powerEdge Pro Duo system produces perfectly finished workpieces without complicated programming.

Homag Centateq E-310 CNC processing centre

“The accumulation of over 30 years of industry-leading research in contour edge banding systems culminated in the evolution of this unit” Combined gluing functions The powerEdge Pro Duo allows the user to freely switch between conventional hot-melt glue and pre-coated edges or zero-joint edging on one workpiece. The combined operation is possible without the need for a changeover, as the hot air nozzle tool used for reheating hot-melt glue also activates the functional layer of a zero-joint edge. Using airTec, the powerEdge Pro Duo head achieves the same quality as a laser head for a fraction of the price of laser. This makes invisible joint quality accessible to even more sectors of the industry. A proven hit with customers Since its launch in 2020, the powerEdge Pro Duo has been very well received by users. After several months of working with the unit, a spokesperson from a large and well-established interiors construction company concluded: “We have been able to use the unit fully from the very beginning and it has proven its worth. It’s very stable and the programming is also significantly easier. Programs can be run with higher feeds than ever

allowing the operator to complete the required task more quickly. For us, the unit is a real step forward.” The perfect pair: Centateq E-310 and powerEdge Pro Duo Homag’s Centateq E-310 is a universal CNC processing centre that excels at edge banding on shaped parts. The compact machine offers a high level of performance with an arrangement of units and a wide choice of configuration options for processing spindles, drilling gears and tool changers. With an array of impressive machining features as standard, the Centateq E-310 is an excellent piece of kit. Basic packages include its powerful 4- and 5-axis routing spindles, travelling tool changers for fast tool changes and a console table with high-precision liner guides and insertion aids. The Centateq E-310 makes operation easy with a large viewing window allowing all essential functions to be directly in sight. As well as open viewing processes, the table is freely accessible with no fences restricting access for set up or loading. Operators also have full access to the front side of the machine to carry out drill changes, servicing, refilling adhesives and edge changes. The latest powerEdge Pro Duo unit makes it simple and quick to achieve perfect edge banding. Coupled with a Homag CNC, such as the Centateq E-310, the pair make for a complete CNC solution. Homag online demonstrations Homag now offers live in-person or streamed demonstrations on its products.

Festool – a guide to screwdriving A cordless screwdriver is always at hand in timber construction, interior finishing and dry mortarless construction and is often carried right on the belt on a clip. But which screwdriver is best suited to different tasks and applications? Festool gives its tips for choosing the right solution ... The torque setting and selection of the right speed are the two most important factors for achieving a perfect screwdriving result, according to Festool, since they precisely adjust the screwdriving process to the screw properties, screw diameter and, most importantly, the material. Cordless impact screwdrivers are taking tradespeople by storm Those seeking a solution only for screwdriving – with optimum performance and endurance and no strength-sapping back torque – will benefit most from the TID 18 impact screwdriver. This tool enables screwdriving over long periods without tiring. Cordless impact screwdrivers are significantly lighter, more compact and enable working more comfortably – especially for repetitive screwdriving tasks. The essential feature here is the extremely low back torque, made possible by the tangential hammer mechanism which minimises impact on the wrist during screwdriving. Georg von dem Bussche, Festool trainer and master carpenter,

explains: “The smart T-mode is an especially practical feature of the TID 18 cordless impact screwdriver. When fitting sheet metal to wood with self-tapping screws, the tool detects the transition between the different materials and automatically adapts the speed. “To drill into the sheet metal as effectively as possible, the tool starts off driving in the screw with a high speed, low torque and without impact loading. Once the torque increases due to the commencing screwdriving process in the wood, the machine independently reduces the speed and only then begins impact loading.” Several speeds for greater variety The range of applications possible with the QUADRIVE TDC cordless drill and QUADRIVE TPC 18/4 cordless percussion drill with four-speed gearbox is extremely versatile. The four-speed powerhouses are ideal both for screwdriving tasks involving high torques and large diameters, as well as quick and powerful drilling. As a rule of thumb, the larger the drilling diameter is, the lower speed needs to be. Festool has developed a clever solution for switching between speeds, with both tools

allowing users to switch from one gear straight to any other. Fixed stops ensure clear engaging, saving you time and guaranteeing full control while screwdriving. KickbackStop protects the wrist Both the QUADRIVE TDC and TPC ensure that your hand twisting dangerously if the tool suddenly jams is a thing of the past. The intelligent KickbackStop minimises the risk of this happening via a sensor, which detects a tool jam and stops the drive within a fraction of a second. Drilling or screwdriving? That is not a question you have to ask with cordless drills, which is why the all-rounder tools in the 18 V class are so popular. The T 18+3 cordless drill and the C 18 cordless drill in the ergonomic C-shape are also equipped with fully electronic torque setting, the Centrotec quick-change system and special attachments, a brushless motor and high-performance battery packs. Many tradespeople often use maximum torque for screwdriving. With the T 18+3 and C 18 cordless drills, you can switch from maximum torque to a lower torque setting simply by pressing a button.

Quick-change system for bits, drills and tool chucks “Precise screwdriving requires an ideal torque, a high-quality bit and a tool chuck that can be changed quickly,” says Georg. “That is why we have combined chuck and bit holder in one with our unique Centrotec tool chuck, ensuring it is half the size and 80% lighter than comparable chucks. It fits all cordless drills from Festool with FastFix interface and enables users to change tools in a matter of seconds, which has proven to be a very popular feature in practice.” Special attachments for efficient work The EX-UNI eccentric attachment is recommended for screwdriving close to the edge. The angle can be adjusted simply by turning the ring. The same principle is used for adjusting the angle on the AN-UNI angle attachment. You no longer need to remove the attachment from the tool first. The DC UNI FF depth stop is perfect for achieving reproducible screw fittings in façade cladding or patio flooring. The rubberised protective ring prevents undesirable, visible impressions in the surface. The DD-DC depth stop is perfect for fitting drywall panels, since it allows many screws to be placed with a uniform screwdriving depth and offers an optimal view of the screwdriving site thanks to its narrow design. www.festool.co.uk/ready

Two new Ostermann catalogues for inspiring furniture making With many new ideas and application pictures, the two new Ostermann catalogues support furniture makers in planning and designing commercial and private interiors

Furniture design and interior decoration are characterised by trends and innovations. To keep carpenters and cabinet makers in the loop, Ostermann has just sent out two new catalogues. For the first time, these contain the new, customisable fronts and furniture roller shutters. The Ostermann range for furniture making and interior design now includes more than 20,000 items. To provide the trade with even more service, there are now two new catalogues: “Creative Design” and “Edgings. Everything for Practical Processing.” While the first catalogue is perfect for advising customers, with products such as surfaces and design items, the second was conceived as a reference book for planning, purchasing, and the workshop. On the inside of both catalogues, readers can expect numerous inspiring application pictures with ideas for kitchens, offices, bedrooms, bathrooms, and retail shops. Both reference books were sent out by Ostermann in mid-April. Anyone who has not received a copy or needs additional ones can request them from May via

the company’s homepage. At the same time, all catalogues are also available digitally, in the download section at www.ostermann.eu. Everything for “Creative Design” The “Creative Design” catalogue contains all items you need to give furniture a unique and individual look. These not only include a large selection of furniture and wall claddings, lighting profiles, LED strips and accessories, but also the typically diverse range of Ostermann handles and handle elements. The catalogue’s last chapter “Function & Equipment” additionally presents table bases and frames, castors, and the Smartcube shelving system. New: fronts and furniture roller shutters made to measure For the first time, the catalogue includes customisable furniture fronts and furniture roller shutters. Look at the chapter “Made-to-Measure Products” in the “Creative Design” catalogue to see the full diversity. Fronts are available with many different surface finishes and qualities, such as lacquer,

Senosan, aluminium, wood veneer, linoleum, or melamine. Furniture roller shutters can be designed with just as much versatility with plastic, aluminium, glass or real wood mats, and different mechanisms and running directions. Everything for “Practical Processing” The second catalogue “Practical Processing” shows edgings in a wide range of materials. Here carpenters / cabinet makers will find furniture edgings in all the latest colours and decors. This is followed by the sections “Workshop & Adhesives” and “Construction”, with items any furniture maker needs to assemble and finish their workpieces, such as glues and cleaners, or materials for packaging and transport. Also worth a look is the catalogue’s last chapter: among the many technical profiles, fastening systems and plinth systems for furniture making you are guaranteed to find the right solution for a new project. 01905 793 550 sales.uk@ostermann.eu www.ostermann.eu

Salvamac continues to impress Salvamac has proven itself to be a company that innovates, seizing every opportunity, developing a new approach to creating cleaver and practical solutions for its customers. With three years of tremendous progress, the Salvamac business is now a high performing business across all its market options. Looking back, co-owner Christian Salvador describes what he feels about the journey that Salvamac has been on: “We carried on along the path we had set ourselves, working to consolidate our presence in many markets and to experiment with new opportunities where we are less known. And the results have not been lacking, allowing us to close an important threeyear period, during which we have accompanied the growth in turnover and the machines

produced with a fine-tuning of the company organisation,” he says. “Because selling more requires producing more, giving more and more certainties in terms of service, the ability to guarantee continuity and quality in the relationship with customers and resellers is of paramount importance. “In Europe, the growth has been made possible by the acquisition of new market share, to which was added the consolidation of the presence in the UK, a market with important results in recent years and which in recent times – thanks to the commitment to a deep-rooted on-site presence – has allowed Salvamac to have an edge. “Our sector is becoming less and less profitable and, in turn, is asking for more and more investments and an originality that I feel is sometimes missing. Everyone is talking about innovation; originality is a different concept, it means being different not only in the product but also in the ideas, in the way of dealing, in the human aspects. “Seeing the business not only as coated steel with a few electronic circuits and some cables, but by placing people ahead of everything, something that is perceived less and less. And, in my opinion, human relationships and ethics will have greater importance than in the past.

Salvamac co-owners Ziemowit Dolkowski (left) and Christian Salvador

“The ethical message goes through the details. The Salvamac optimising saws, such as the SalvaPush 2000, are in themselves an ethical product, because cutting wood with these machines means saving 5-15% of the raw material. It also makes work easier and safer for the operator; it is only necessary to load and unload or to mark the wood, it reduces the strain on the worker, who can be moved to more qualified tasks,” says Christian. “Furthermore,” said Salvamac co-owner Ziemowit Dolkowski, “the recent evolutions in the entry-level range of the semi-automatic cutting saws combined with the Salvastop 100 device have made it possible to achieve incredible results.” www.salvamac.com

Sophisticated 3D pressing adhesives from Hybond Adhesive specialist, Hybond, provides manufacturers with quality adhesive products and equipment, as well as outstanding technical support from its in-house laboratory. The Hybond team frequently works with those carrying out 3D pressing, also known as vinyl or membrane pressing. This lamination technique is popular with those producing decorative furniture fronts within kitchen, bedroom and bathroom production. Raw MDF panels are spray-coated with adhesive, dried, and passed through a press where they are wrapped in decorative vinyl foil through exposure to temperature and pressure. The results provide many colourful and varied finishes. Hybond recognises that 3D pressing is a challenging process, and has invested heavily in training, equipment, and laboratory testing protocols, to become an industry leading, technically competent distributor of 3D pressing adhesives.

Hybond’s 3D pressing intelligent sensor as seen above in black, travels through the press providing real-time information to Hybond’s technical team

The adhesives Hybond’s adhesive offering includes its own brand of products in the ‘Xtra’ range, as well as being a technical partner for major manufacturer, Henkel. “For 3D Pressing, our favoured product is Henkel’s Aquence FD 150/6,” explains Hybond technical manager, Dr. Karl Kaye. “This solvent-free adhesive offers high heat and moisture resistance. It is clean spraying, has a low activation temperature, and flows well when heated to make it particularly suitable for use with high-gloss vinyl foils, as it will not produce the undesirable ‘orange peel effect’ quality issue often encountered with alternative products. “Furthermore, Aquence FD 150/6 contains a pigment that fluoresces when exposed to UV light, which means that our technical team can inspect adhesive distribution on sprayed panels to aid our customers in achieving an optimum finish.” The audit A popular Hybond service is its 3D Pressing Audit. Carried out at the site of manufacture, the Hybond technical team uses an intelligent panel and process analysis software to analyse critical points of the pressing process in real time as they occur within a pressing system. The dummy panel is fitted with a series of sensors and travels through the press alongside raw panels for processing. The panel communicates live via Bluetooth with the analysis software, providing instant detailed

information about the temperature and pressure the bonded panels are being subjected to. Hybond director, Ross Dalrymple, speaks further on the process: “Operators of 3D pressing systems will be acutely aware of how important it is to achieve precise temperature levels during the pressing process in order to avoid quality issues such as bubbling, tearing, and delamination. “Many will be familiar with the use of disposable temperature strips for ascertaining

heat levels within your system, these can be tiresome to use, often giving inaccurate readings and restricting the user to limited placement points. “The beauty of our intelligent sensor panel is that it travels through the press system taking readings throughout, for example a vertical reading can be obtained measuring the temperature of the foil directly above the panel – the temperature at this position is critical as it will dictate how well the heat transfers to bond the foil securely to the exterior panel edge. When we consider end usage of such panels in kitchen or bathroom environments, it is essential there is no entry point for moisture, therefore the information obtained during our audit process has proven to be an essential tool in ensuring optimal quality output for our customers.” For further information on Hybond’s products and services, contact Hybond on 01743 861800 or www.hybond.org.uk.

102 UPDATES

Domestic wood burner pollution is worse than traffic Wood burning stoves produce more fine particle pollution than all the road traffic in Britain according to new government data. Over the last 10 years, emissions caused by domestic wood burners have increased by a third, research by DEFRA has found. It is claimed that 17% of fine particle pollution in the UK was produced by domestic stoves in homes, compared with 13% from road transport. Industrial wood-fired boiler and heaters, that are automatically fed, have produced the opposite effect. Current UK legislation on industrial wood-fired boilers and heaters have a limit of 60mg/m3 on all plants capable of burning 90kgs/hr or more. The Ranheat ceramic flue gas filtration system takes particulate down to less than 2mg/

“It is claimed that 17% of fine particle pollution in the UK was produced by domestic stoves in homes, compared with 13% from road transport” m3, removing almost all pm 2.5s (particulate matter 2.5 microns). The ceramic filter elements contained within the filter housing (280 filters on a 1MW boiler) draw the hot flue gasses through the elements with the particles collecting on the outside of the tubes. The elements are automatically cleaned by a pulse of compressed air blown backwards through each of the tubes. Domestic wood burners are receiving bad press at the moment, and people are rightly looking at the merits of any hand-loaded woodfired heating appliance. Ranheat’s range of industrial wood-fired boilers and heaters are all automatically fed, have a minimum of multi-cyclone flue gas cleaning or full ceramic filtration systems fitted. In hi NOx areas of the country the NOx emissions from industrial wood-burners are lower than the ambient air levels that the boiler takes in for combustion air. Ranheat’s range of ceramic flue gas cleaning equipment can be retrofitted to all makes of industrial wood fired boilers. Those with a boiler or heater that does not meet the new regulations have until 2030 to make the changes. 01604 750005 sales@ranheat.com www.ranheat.com

EVENTS 103

Holz-Handwerk & Fensterbau return

Holz-Handwerk & Fensterbau is an impressive single event made of two important halves. Together, this is a must event for everyone wanting to update themselves on the trends in wood and wood-based materials, wood finishing and woodworking machinery, and it’s also a world-class event for those working with windows, doors and facades. The exhibition duo of Holz-Handwerk and Fensterbau Frontale attracted over 110,000 decision-makers to Nuremberg in 2018 from all

over the world. The organiser is proud to claim that “no other international trade fair offers more ideas for wood products, more experts from architecture, industry, trade and research, and more potential business contacts – all in one place. Secondly, Fensterbau Frontale reflects worldwide innovation in windows, doors and facades and provides exactly what its visitors are looking for: new contacts, new products and fresh inspiration regarding the issues that are

driving their industry. At Holz-Handwerk, leading suppliers will present current woodworking trends and technologies for wood, woodworking machinery, woodbased materials, fixing equipment, hardware, components, tools, finishing technology, grinding aids, polishing aids, disposal equipment, electrical tools, pneumatic tools, adhesives, or coatings. Taking centre-stage at Fensterbau Frontale, meanwhile, are innovations and cutting-edge technologies for industry, trade and automation, the dedicated Architects’ Area, the Fensterbau Frontale Forum, numerous special shows and other exciting features. Holz-Handwerk 2022 is the 20th edition of this long-established international gathering for the woodworking sector. The figures show that the perfect mixture of innovation, tradition and professional dialogue is more up to date than ever. In 2022, these program highlights in Nuremberg will be complemented by an online concept under the title “FFconnected”. As a global meeting place for the sector, Fensterbau Frontale can thus be experienced live as well as online and will be complemented by the advantages of digital solutions. www.holz-handwerk.de www.frontale.de
