4 Edgebanding materials and technology There are numerous skilled carpenters and joiners among Ostermann’s well-trained sales employees. These experts face different questions on the perfect processing of furniture edgings every day. Here, they provide you with practical tips.

How to avoid mistakes when processing edgings Tips & Tricks from the Ostermann experts TIP 1

ABS edgings for the currently popular industrial style

The industrial look is in vogue for shop fitting but is also expanding into the private sector. Due to the increased demand of the currently popular industrial style surfaces, the wide range of ABS edgings with concrete and rust décors has once again been expanded. For furniture edgings with trend décors, an order per metre is always more profitable, as unnecessary remaining amounts and Ostermann supplies numerous new furniture edgings with a look of rust and concrete

expensive storage costs can be avoided. The stock items ordered before 4pm are sent that same day.

TIP 2

Careful with cold temperatures and draught

Often, delamination is a result of cold temperatures or draught. This is why the temperature in the workshop should never be below 18°C. If the joiner has to wear a jacket in the workshop, it is a sign that it is too cold for the processing of edgings. In the winter, newly delivered boards or edgings should always be stocked at room temperature for 24 hours, in order to acclimatise. There could also occur problems with the bonding of furniture edgings in summer. It is particularly important to avoid draughts, as the applied adhesive will cool down too quickly otherwise, and won’t be able to build any bonding strength.

TIP 3

Clean the gluepot and the glue applicator roll on a regular basis

Due to the deposition of glue and chip remnants, the planned glue application will be reduced. Therefore, it is important to clean the gluepot and the applicator roller on a regular basis. There are appropriate cleaners for each type of adhesive.

TIP 4

Check the glue application

If the pressure of the first applicator roll isn’t high enough, the adhesive won’t be pressed into the board as much and won’t connect well enough with the edging. The adhesion properties of the edging are then reduced. At the second applicator roll, the adhesive will already have cooled down too much to create a strong bond between the board and the edging.

To test glue application and roller pressure, Ostermann supplies a transparent test edging without primer. It is available in widths of 23 or 43mm and in a thickness of 0.4mm.

TIP 5

Real wood edgings need more glue

Real wood edgings in general have more residual stress. The adhesive thus has to achieve more. The edgings can still be bonded with all standard hotmelt adhesives (EVA, PUR, PO), automatically or manually, but more adhesive needs to be applied. For machine processing, Ostermann

Wooden sticks that are put into the gluepot an evening before, help to easily remove the hardened mixture of PUR glue and cleaner the next morning

EdgebandingNov18.indd 4

5 hanging cupboards, or near the electric kettle. If a very high water and heat resistance is required, bonding with PUR adhesives is a necessity. A particularly good option is Kantomelt PUR from Redocol.

TIP 7

Cleaning after using PUR

Real wood edgings: for automatic processing, Ostermann recommends a glue application of approximately 200-300g/m2

recommends a glue application of approximately 200-300g/m2. In addition, all Ostermann thick veneers (1 and 2mm) are coated with a bonding agent (primer). In comparison to veneer edgings without primer, primered edgings show far better bonding characteristics. If possible, switch the running direction of the applicator roll. This leads to a higher glue application, a greater glue application surface and, as a result, to a better adhesion of the edgings.

TIP 6

PUR hotmelt adhesive for kitchen furniture

For the cleaning of the gluepot and the applicator roll after using PUR hotmelt adhesive, the Ostermann experts are happy to give you a hint: it is best if you apply the PUR edgings at the end of a workday, and pour the appropriate cleaner into the gluepot after work. The roller should be kept in motion until the blue-coloured cleaner covers the glue applicator roll. Afterwards, you can switch off the machine. It is advisable to also put several little wooden sticks into the glue like ice lolly sticks, as long as the glue remains warm. The next morning, you can heat up the gluepot and easily remove the hardened adhesive by using the sticks. Important: remove the cleaner remnants at the applicator roll as well! In order to do that, use a thick piece of chipboard and pass it through several times with a suitable edging.

TIP 8

Heat up solid aluminium edgings Edgings made of solid aluminium appear very elegant and sophisticated, but they are also a little more demanding in processing. They should definitely be applied with PUR adhesive. Heat up the whole edging before its application in a heating press or another heat source to 45-50°C, so that the adhesive does not set too quickly. Millling will be easier if you apply a very thin layer of Teflon oil on both milled ends of the edging. Caution: Teflon oil must not get onto the adhesive side! You can heat up the carrier plate for the aluminium edging with a hot air device in order to keep the edging at a consistent temperature. An alternative to solid aluminium edgings are ABS edgings covered with a layer of real aluminium. They are just as easy to process as traditional ABS edgings. More joinery tips can be found at the Ostermann website at www.ostermann.eu/ services and on OstermannTV. For individual questions, give the Ostermann experts a call. They will be happy to help. 01905 793550 www.ostermann.eu

Furniture edgings made of solid aluminium are very elegant and sophisticated. They should be heated up before being processed, though, to prevent the adhesive from setting too quickly

For bathroom interiors, the processing with PUR adhesives is already a standard. If you wish to construct high-grade kitchen furniture, you should think about using PUR or modern zero bondline technology. In the

If the coffee maker, the electric kettle, espresso maker or steam cooker is placed beneath hanging cupboards, a water-resistant joint is needed

long run, steam and heat can damage the traditional EVA glue joints. Think about the ever -more popular espresso makers or steam cookers that usually find their place on the kitchen counter beneath

6 Edgebanding materials and technology In recent years, Warwick Edging has noticed there is a growing trend for edged slab doors. But how can Warwick Edging help its customer add value to these?

Warwick Edging sees growing trend in edgebanding sales for producing edged slab doors One range the company now offers is the Elegant edgebanding range which is a metal foil applied to a PVC edgebanding, either matching or in contrast to the MFC door colour, and a 3D duo acrylic (PMMA) in matt or gloss to match these. The metal foil coated edging adds a high-end finish to the door with an impressive metal feel. Going different from applying a matching edging means the door stands out from others with a solid framed effect – it also brings an added benefit of one edgebanding that can be used for all boards. Other than a solid metal edging, the metal foil applied to PVC edging can simply be run through the edgebander like any other plastic (PVC, ABS, PMMA) edging with no damage to trimmers or change in processing. 01926 408954 info@warwickedging.com

REHAU has made its name in many industry sectors by being near to the market and reacting to individual market needs.

Polymer specialist REHAU – German engineering, produced in the UK Today, REHAU is the only major edgeband supplier to be extruding here in the UK and is therefore well placed to allow its customers to buy British, backed by German engineering, but also significantly reduce lead times compared to imported products from overseas. “The UK and Ireland represent crucial markets for REHAU. This continuous market growth is a real driver for our development,” says Russell Hand, head of furniture UK and Ireland. He goes on to say: “Growing demand for high quality products and the expectation of impeccable match quality and best in class service, align perfectly with our company ethos of Innovation, Trust, and Reliability. In an attempt to marry this with supplying high quality products into an ever-changing

marketplace, REHAU have made further investments for its UK manufacturing site in Amlwch, North Wales. Russell adds: “We have been producing ABS and PVC edgebands in our Welsh factory for many years. But with a recent £1m investment, we have now added local production of polypropylene edgeband for the domestic kitchen and office market to our portfolio. “Furthermore, all our UK-made PP edgebands can be produced as Raukantex Pro polymer zero-joint for use with laser and hotair edgebanding machines. This will allow us to produce quality products for what is a very competitive market. “This way, our customers get the best of both worlds. German engineering – made in the UK. 10 Edgebanding materials and technology Camco is a supplier of veneer and ABS edgebanding material based in Lisburn, Northern Ireland, and it covers the fit out industry and specialist joinery sectors throughout the UK and Irish markets.

Camco provides high standards of product choice and customer service As a family-run business with over 30 years supplying edging material, Camco can supply its material in any width split to order with no minimum order quantity. Orders can be taken and delivered next day in most cases, with non-standard items on short lead times. Veneer edging Camco’s veneer edging is created from the highest grade veneer and it’s manufactured in Europe. The company offers a wide range of veneer edging from local and foreign tree species, as well as fine-line veneers of various thicknesses and widths, supplied in rolls or in strips, pre-glued or unglued, fleece-backed, sanded, and upon request, also brushed and lacquered. The material is available in any width from 12mm up to 350mm. Lacquered veneer edging Lacquered veneer edging from Camco helps manufacturers take the hassle out of the finishing of high end carpentry and furniture cabinets. The company says users can readily achieve striking, quality results using Camco’s pre-lacquered and stained edging to edge pre-cut pre-lacquered board – thus reducing handling and damage. Camco says it can match perfectly to a required colour and sheen grade. For example, if customers require a higher sheen grade for

the edging, to emphasise the edging, it will produce and supply to that requirement. ABS edging Camco states that its customers are offered the widest selection of products in different patterns as well as thickness and width sizes. Currently, its offer comprises around 1100 colours and patterns of 300 types of ABS edgebanding tapes, 80 types of melamine edgebanding tapes, 40 types of CPL edgebanding tapes used on worktops, and 35 types of edgebanding tapes made of natural veneer. In this way, it can provide customers with a wide possibility of choice and an overall solution – all in one place. Consulting with the intention to provide support at an optimal level, Camco offers its clients consulting services delivered at customers’ premises – the company’s specialists are ready to give assistance for any kind of technical problem. Paintable edging For furniture manufacturers, Camco offers edgebanding tapes for painting intended for edgebanding and subsequent varnishing. Amongst its range, there are melamine and ABS edgebanding tapes for painting and a dedicated edgebanding tape for painting, PP-wood. Edgebanding tapes for painting are

available in various thicknesses and widths and are intended for lacquering with PUR as well as water-based lacquers. Acrylic edging An innovative and impressive 3D appearance can undoubtedly increase the value of any furniture. Acrylic edgebanding tapes, also known as 3D edgebanding tapes, are available in stock with thickness of 1mm and 2mm in various combinations of the colour of aluminium and solid colour shades. The acrylic edgebanding tapes are also available to order in other solid colour and woodgrain designs – and even imitations of end grain. Colour-matching tool To make life easy, Camco has its own dedicated colour-matching tool on its website – www.camco.uk – where customers can select any board supplier on the market, and their board code, and it will provide Camco’s matching edging as well as all the technical information such as thickness and size. 0289 264 6688 orders@camco.uk www.camco.uk/edging

12 Edgebanding materials and technology One of Warwick Edging’s key to its success is its huge stock range of true co-extruded zero-joint edgings available in a range of sizes.

Alpha Tape Zero PP sales continue to grow for Warwick Edging Having made the decision back in 2016 to invest into stocking a new range of purposeproduced edgebandings for the zero joint seamless edge markets, Warwick Edging now has over 115 décors in stock available in a variety of widths (14 to 400mm) and thicknesses (1.2 and 2.2mm) all of which are a true co-extruded zero joint technology edgebanding, unlike others available where a traditional ABS edgebanding is used and then post-coated or post-extruded. The key to Warwick Edging’s success in this market has been the harder co-extruded functional layer MKT has created as well as the time and care taken in ensuring all the UK’s popular décors are perfectly colour matched and held in stock here in the UK. The advantage of the harder co-extruded PP functional layer is that it truly eliminates any existence of what could appear as a glue line giving a completely seamless edge. For example, dirt cannot penetrate the harder functional layer as it can in soft versions, the functional layer is perfectly matched to the top layer, there is no primer between the layers, and both layers have the same milling properties. All of MKT’s Alpha Tape Zero is produced by the calender method and then supplied to Warwick Edging in jumbo rolls 405mm wide, which can then be slit on site in Warwick to the desired width between 14mm and 400mm. All stock décors and dimensions – as with all of Warwick Edging’s other edgebandings – are available in quantities of 1m+, and if ordered before 4pm can be delivered next day. For more information on Warwick Edging’s Alpha Tape Zero PP edgebanding or any other edgebanding types, contact the office. 01926 408954 www.warwickedging.com

Why PP over ABS? • Hot air technology uses extremely hot compressed air to activate the functional layer and fuse it onto the board. Polypropylene (PP) does not shrink during cooling like other plastics • PP uses less energy in production and when burned produces only carbon dioxide and water • PP has almost no stress whiting and a very high colourfast

14 Edgebanding materials and technology High Gloss is a major current trend and its popularity is constantly growing. It can be found in contemporary commercial interiors such as hotels, restaurants, boutiques, conference rooms and office buildings. However gloss can also be found in modern domestic kitchens, living rooms, bedrooms and section furniture elements.

Hranipex and Senosan shine brightly together The eye-catching design from furniture with a high gloss finish gives any décor an unexpected spark, style and leaves an impression of luxury and uniqueness. Furniture production companies – such as IKEA – offer high gloss collections for their clients. In this case the combination between Senosan offering high-end boards in high gloss and Hranipex with its collection of perfectly identical edges to match these boards, creates an ideal match. Hranipex’s collection currently contains almost 50 impressive décors for the AM1800 TopX (High Acrylic Gloss) board line from Senosan. Co-operation between Senosan and Hranipex has been going on for seven years so far and has formed into an exclusive production symbiosis. Hranipex says it can guarantee the perfect colour and material match through shared manufacturing processes. Hranipex says its high gloss furniture materials meet the most stringent quality standards. However, it is not only about the quality of the gloss but also the durability and easy maintenance which helps improve longevity and the radiant appearance of the finished furniture products. ABS material used have a thick layer of acrylic, which ensures its colour stability. The gloss depth and intensity can compete with a glass surface or multilayered varnish. Hranipex’s products are characterised by high scratch resistance as well as UV and chemical resistance. This all results into a complete package for furniture manufacturers looking to offer attractively designed products. The company offers furniture edges of top

EdgebandingNov18.indd 14

quality that customers can depend on. A perfect match to the Senosan boards is ensured by the usage of the identical materials and thanks to strict quality control. All its décors are available in standard dimensions, but it is possible to realise atypical sizes up to 405mm wide. If clients believe their customers prefer materials from the opposite side of the spectrum, then it’s worth investigating the modern, ultra-matte décors from the same Senosan collection. A deep matt works perfectly for any interior – highly elegant with a contemporary look. Hranipex also provides perfectly identical edges to match deep matt boards. This range of furniture surfaces deserve professional care, that will ensure the customers’ interior remains constantly beautiful and distinctive. The cleaning of sensitive materials such as high gloss and a deep matt is not a problem, says Hranipex – its customers rely on Hraniclean 08 cleaner spray, specifically developed for these challenging surfaces. Hranipex introduces the partnership which defines a new quality standard – helping manufacturers to show off the attractive appearance of products, and to achieve exceptional results. www.hranipex.co.uk

16 Edgebanding materials and technology

With hundreds of different decors available, Lawcris’ huge warehouse and large stockholding of decorative boards alone is impressive, yet, it is its ability to provide matching edging for every stocked board that really sets the company apart from competitors.

Lawcris – edging its way to the top Lawcris Panel Products is known for its speedy next-day delivery on 1000s of stocked decorative panels. So how does it top this? Well, it provides matching edging for every single décor of course! Edging department manager, Ryan Maknia, says: “Being the distribution giants of melamines, laminates and worktops, Lawcris’ edging division is sometimes overlooked. But with an incredible range of ABS, high gloss acrylic, 2 in 1, veneer, thickwood, melamine and PVC options, we are massive players in the edging sector. “It makes perfect sense to keep everything

under one roof for the customers’ convenience when placing their orders. It is the ability to provide matching edging for every board we stock which sets us apart from our competitors.” Ryan continues: “We know that a diverse selection is key, it is not the case that one size/material fits all. ABS is the most environmentally-friendly material for plastic edging and is an extremely popular option. Our acrylic range creates a stunning 3D effect and our end grain edging creates a realistic solid wood effect. Not to mention Egger’s unique accent edging. Ultimately, we can provide the

perfect finish for any wood-based panel.” With the abundance of edging available in stock at its substantial warehouse in Leeds, the company can offer not only matching or contrasting edging, but even provides a bespoke edge-slitting service for those requiring more specific widths. Lawcris keeps the standard widths of 22mm, 23mm, 29mm, 33mm, 45mm, 54mm and 100mm, but, in addition to this, it also offers customers any width up to 100mm. Ryan adds: “We operate a slitting service which usually takes 24 hours to complete. This gives us a very flexible and wide range of edging sizes that can be offered on short lead times. With the addition of a brand new Homag KAL 370 edgebander too, our edging service is second-to-none.” Lawcris has a dedicated team that is on hand to answer any questions regarding edging. 18 Edgebanding materials and technology Many of the Ney’s smaller customers have always admired and aspired to its range of EBM machines, but due to space considerations, were forced into alternative choices. The new KDP 100 machine now fits the bill. Measuring only 2500mm long, it is ideally suited to the smaller workshop.

3

Ney adds to its EBM range of edgebanders Whilst smaller in stature, the KDP 100 does not compromise on quality and performance borrowing the glue pot, end trim saws and top and bottom trim stations from the KDP 200 and 400 machines. Even the tape table is full-sized meaning a full roll of 2mm edging can be used without problems. With pre-sets for fast changeover from thick to thin tape and EBM’s legendary build quality it’s well worth a visit to Ney’s InHouse Show where the machine can be seen demonstrated. In terms of quantities sold, the EBM KDP 400 edgebander is proving to be the most popular EBM machine built at the moment. With premilling, end-trim saws top and bottom trim, corner-rounding, scraping and buffing, the 400 represents excellent value for money and adheres to the EBM mantra of attention to detail, and most importantly for edgebanders, consistent quality of finish. With about half of UK manufacturers either currently nesting panels – or moving towards that process – the ability to edgeband the pre-drilled panels perfectly is becoming more important. The nesting option on the KDP 400 eliminates the risk of the trimmers and scrapers dipping into the edge and producing an inferior panel. So whether manufacturers are nesting already or planning to go that way in the future, this exceptionally well-specified machine is a worthy option – and comparing the results, price for price with any other machine on the market, Ney believes buyers will not find it lacking.

The significant optical quality makes Airtronic by EBM affordable for small- to medium-sized businesses

Ney asserts that it is no exaggeration to say that the EBM 110 series edgebanders lead the class in terms of reliability and performance. Countless machines are running throughout the UK and Ireland with what the Coventry firm says is an unprecedented degree of customer satisfaction. The new Airtronic Excel machine combines all the best that EBM has to offer in one machine, with pre-milling, end trim saws, double top and bottom trim with flat and profile scraping and buffers. Sounds good so far? Now add panel protection and cleaning sprays – and it just gets better! Then add the Airtronic seamless edging option, which gives a perfect joint every time, and it gets exciting. To top it off, the Airtronic Excel is all enclosed in a new, roomier hood with vertical sliding access doors and a motorised pressure beam. 024 7630 8100 www.ney.co.uk

20 Edgebanding materials and technology Faster and more precise production that constantly meet high quality standards – this is the extraordinary achievement made possible by SCM’s edgebanding technologies.

SCM’s Stefani KD – impressive edgebanding at your fingertips Continuous use, versatility and exclusive solutions to achieve quality machining operations: these are the unique characteristics of the new Stefani KD single-sided automatic edgebander. The Stefani KD provides all that manufacturers would expect from an edgebanding machine today, such as the possibility of using two different glues, the automatic machine set-up and the new HMI Maestro Pro Edge with the latest 21.5in multi touch eye-M display. These specifications make it the ideal edgebanding machine for companies that need to produce a range of different panels, whilst maintaining the highest levels of quality. The Stefani KD contains the main strengths of SCM’s edgebanding machines, such as the SGP glue tank with two different pre-melting devices that can be used at the same time: the QMS-P for Eva glue and the PU BOX L for polyurethane glue. The Stefani KD excels for its automatic and error-free set-up of the machining units, that can machine edges with two different radii and solid wood up to 12mm thick. The new AirFusion+ technology, with improved performance compared with previous versions, guarantees highly impressive finish levels, thanks to the invisible joint line between edge and panel. Furthermore, the Stefani KD can now also be equipped with the top pressure belt which is particularly suited for processing delicate panels. All these distinct features make the Stefani KD edgebander a machine capable of high production levels, with the possibility of working at speeds up to 20m/min. www.scmgroup.com

22 Edgebanding materials and technology During the recent W Exhibition, Fen UK demonstrated the new HIT-M zero-glue line machine, which is perfect for applying edgebanding to both straight and shaped panels – without requiring any adhesive application whatsoever.

Zero glue line now for any bespoke panel shapes Fen UK MD Felix Ney, explains the virtues of it HIT-M zero-glue line machine:“Thanks to the hot air injection technology, this machine can be used to apply laser co-extruded edging, or specially pre-coated materials quickly and easily. These edges are all readily available in the UK. It is a real step forward for edgebanding of more difficult shaped panels. And all at a realistic budget! “When considering that there is no need for a glue pot at all, which in the past, due to the very low feed speed required when applying tape to shaped panels, shape edgebanders have always been baking the adhesive in the machine, thus leading to degradation of the glue line and overall finish. “Due to the latest hot air injection technology, the edgebanding is heated and the tape materials flow easily into internal radii’s, without tape edges popping away again and leaving an unsightly gap after.”

EdgebandingNov18.indd 22

Felix continues: “The finish is superb and the bonding performance is first class, there is no comparison to tape edges applied by shape edgebanders using a glue pot design. “The new Hit-M is supplied with a very robust support table, allowing processing of angled pieces, too. Even panels

with an angle up to 55° can be edgebanded very easily, without any glue line and without hassle. “The HIT-M can also be used as a portable edgebander, for example it is very handy to use when applying tape edges to bigger panels and even can be carried along onsite to quickly repair panel edges on site leaving

a perfect finish. “Heat up time is only 30 seconds, so the machine is always ready when needed. When equipped with the option for extra thick panels, it is even possible to apply edging materials up to a height of 105mm.” 01332 516557 www.fenuk.com

24 Edgebanding materials and technology From the smallest edgebanders to the largest production solution, the full range of edgebanders from Holz-Her offers choice without compromise and every single one delivers a fine glue line as standard.

Effortless edgebanding with Holz-Her All Holz-Her edgebanders come with HolzHer’s patented and award-winning Glu Jet system as standard, delivering one-of-a-kind edging results with ultra-thin glue joints; near equivalent to industrial laser edges. The hybrid technology combined with Holz-Her thin film technology enables visual zero joints with PUR glue, perfect for wet and humid areas including bathrooms, student accommodation and kitchen environments. The Glu Jet system is fast, heating up in just four minutes. It only uses 2.3kW of energy; a huge saving in both time and energy compared with a typical heating system that needs 6kW. As it’s so quick to heat up, the glue doesn’t simmer. Every time you heat and cool EVA you lose around 10% of its power but as the Glu Jet system only heats up what is

needed, effectiveness of the adhesive is not compromised. This is industrial technology for all; from the Holz-Her Streamer 1053 at under £20,000 to the Accura range from over £100,000, customers can also process PUR glue as standard, without the hassle. As the benchmark for professional cabinetmakers, most manufacturers would use PUR, but not all machinery can cope with the demands of the polymer reaction which forms such strong and thin waterproof, temperature-tolerant bonds. PUR is difficult to manage with a standard glue pot and molecular cross-linking becomes a problem. With the Glu Jet ready to use in under four minutes with EVA or PUR, Holz-Her’s unique system is the right solution for any

edgebanding requirements. Program selection allows the machine to be set up without even opening the hood, so it’s ready for production immediately. From high gloss through to solid wood edging, the system is both flexible and versatile. Such is its build quality and reliability, the Glu Jet system comes with a three year warranty as standard. But it doesn’t stop there. With the new Holz-Her Lumina series comes an option for the LTronic system – the laser edging unit from Holz-Her which is unbeatable in terms of speed and cost efficiency. The NIR (Near Infrared Radiation) module in Holz-Her’s LTronic unit transfers heat energy quickly and precisely to the specific point required making it ideal for activation of

Above: Streamer: Holz-Her’s entry level edgebander Below: Holz-Her Lumina 1588: The Lumina 1588 performance remains highly flexible, allowing adaptation to your specific requirements

Glu Jet System: Such is its build quality and reliability, the Glu Jet system comes with a three year warranty as standard

function layers on laser edging. Two different NIR modules are available: the standard module for edge heights up to 23mm, or the optional NIR+ module for edge heights up to 45mm. It’s ready to use as soon as you switch it on – there is no heat-up time or any heatup phases during the machining process. In addition, the complete system operates absolutely silently; a huge advantage over other noisy systems. With the integrated protective plate on the NIR module only

needing to be briefly cleaned just once a week, the system is a pioneer in terms of energy efficiency. With the Holz-Her Lumina series, you can switch from glue to laser in minutes. Using the high precision HSK interface from HolzHer’s CNC technology, at the push of a button and serial bus connectors, two dedicated carriages enable units to simply slide on and off. Changing from laser to PUR or EVA could not be easier, and Holz-Her’s solution was designed to ensure the gluing station is always

as close as possible to the pressing station, eliminating the chance of glue shock and subsequent production problems. This simple change-over also enables any preventative maintenance or service to the system not in use with zero down time. The Lumina has an automatic unit recognition feature and is ready for use immediately after changing over to the LTronic. The change-over time from edge to edge is under five minutes. 01235 557600 www.holzher.co.uk

26 Edgebanding materials and technology Interior design has become essential to communicating the identity of a place and of those who live in it, combining style, functionality, and expression.

Ray Force System: a new frontier in shaped edgebanding Today the beauty and cohesiveness of furniture and accessories are based on elegance and perfection. Within this context, edges must be impeccable: a quality panel requires edgebanding strips that match perfectly in terms of colour, decor, and finish. Biesse, as always providing cutting-edge technology that is capable of responding to the qualitative needs which the market demands, has developed an all-new technology like none other of its kind for the application of edgebanding strips to shaped panels: Ray Force System. Its revolutionary nature is based on an incomparable technique which uses infrared lamps to fuse a reactive layer. The advantages are unmatched: maximum quality of finish, reduced energetic consumption, and ease of use. The lack of a glue line guarantees the continuity of the panel’s surfaces for an aesthetic result of great and enduring quality. Ray Force System makes it possible to considerably reduce production costs as compared with standard technologies that

EdgebandingNov18.indd 26

require the use of glue. It does not require maintenance, it does not get things dirty, waiting time for the heating of the glue is eliminated, and sensitivity to environmental conditions are drastically reduced. Compared to laser technologies, Ray Force System requires a much smaller investment and is much easier and safer to use. Furthermore, unlike laser technology, its flexibility allows for the option to use the traditional technique with EVA or PUR glue as well, through a fast and easy manual change of equipment. The maximum quality of the finished product is obtained through edgebanding strips that are specially made by the largest world suppliers, but it is also possible to buy from local manufacturers that have developed pre-glued strips with the proper characteristics. The Ray Force System for shaped edgebanding alongside the best-selling Air Force System technology for linear edgebanding, makes it possible to cover all possibilities of the process for this kind of machining operation. www.biesse.com

28 Edgebanding materials and technology After the success of intelliGuide, the intelligent machine operator assistance system, within their beam saw technology, Homag has now extended its capabilities to other areas of the workshop.

Homag extends intelliGuide range with solutions for Edgeteq and Drillteq Continuing to develop technology to improve the production experience, Homag has adapted intelliGuide for use on its Edgeteq and Drillteq machines. Homag’s operator assistance system reacts to the actions of machine operators, enabling efficient production. With clear automated LED light guidance, operators are instructed on the positioning of workpieces and the order of production flow. On edge banding machines, two LED strips in the infeed area demonstrate how the workpiece should be positioned. The strips use different colours to provide specific handling instructions. White LED lights mark out the correct dimensions for workpiece length and width. This ensures that the operator knows exactly how to place the workpiece in the infeed area. Green LED lights demonstrate the correct way to position the barcode so it can be easily read. Orange LED lights indicate which edge of the workpiece has already

been processed during edge banding. Blue LED lights are used to inform the operator of any error messages during production. With intelliGuide’s intuitive system, it is virtually impossible to make an error during production. Operating the machine is simplified as operators are instructed on where parts should be placed and which process is next. This high level of efficiency speeds up production processes and keeps the machine running smoothly. Adding intelliGuide to Homag’s powerful Edgeteq technology makes for a strong partnership which reduces throughput times and errors. This makes it the ideal assistant for busy workshops. Accurate production with intelliGuide for Drillteq Showcased at Treff 2018, Homag has also adapted the intelliGuide system for use on its Drillteq D-500 drilling and dowel inserting machine. The system delivers improved user-friendliness for the

Homag intelliGuide for Edgetec – simplified edge banding with workpiece guidance

operator which increases both efficiency and output. The Drillteq D-500 is the ideal machine for horizontal drilling, direct dowel insertion and vertical processing around workpiece edges. Already boasting high levels of accuracy, the addition of intelliGuide makes the machine easier to operate, the processing sequence faster and it also improves the quality of finished workpieces. Continuing to utilise the system’s interactive LED guide lights, operators are instructed on how to efficiently use the machine.

The Drillteq D-500 now with intelliGuide for accurate and efficient production

EdgebandingNov18.indd 28

White LED lights indicate how the workpiece should be positioned and green LED lights confirm the workpiece is placed correctly. With this high level of instruction, it is near impossible for the operator to make a mistake. Not only does this reduce any errors, thus minimising wasted material, but it also increases production output. Simon Brooks, managing director of Homag UK comments: “The launch of intelliGuide for Edgeteq and Drillteq signifies an exciting time for the woodworking industry. After its initial launch for panel dividing technology, it has generated a real buzz within the industry and extending its use to other machinery is a significant move in making manufacturing easier than ever. “The intelliGuide system makes the machines more user-friendly than before, but also it means that it is virtually impossible for operators to make mistakes. With the ability to reduce throughput times and increase production quality, this intuitive system is a strong addition to Homag machinery. With different intelliGuide packages available, we can offer a unique solution for all manufacturers.” To see a demonstration of Homag’s intelliGuide system or receive further information, call Adele Hunt at Homag UK on 01332 856424. www.homag.com

30 Edgebanding materials and technology For a number of years, J & C O’Meara had been searching for a hot melt edgebander that could apply tapes up to 2mm in thickness, and having attended numerous International trade shows, MD Carl O’Meara became very aware of the vast array of machines available from the many producers around the globe offering all different styles with differing levels of quality.

Substantial edgebanding performance from a compact, affordable machine The machine Carl was looking for needed to compliment the established Genisis range of sliding table panel saws the company already had in its range, with several explicit requirements the machine had to meet including the build quality, the components used in construction, being from a reputable source and we also wanted a machine that would simply offer that little bit more in terms of capability yet be priced for the small to medium sized furniture manufacturer. The company found was that as soon as 2mm PVC was mentioned, the majority of machinery manufacturers started talking about machines with essentially the same specification and having separate end saws, separate flush trim, separate rounding station and such like, making the machine very long and very expensive. But then in 2013, Carl met a small but established machinery producer which had developed a system which allows the flush trimmers to also do the corner rounding and the end trimming. The advantage of this system is that it makes the machine a lot more compact which in turn also substantially reduces the price, whilst making the machine easier to set up when using tapes of different thickness. “In 2014 the Genisis 512S was introduced to the UK and has become our best-selling edgebander,” explains Carl. “The machine has a high specification and is ideally suited to the

application of tapes up to 2mm in thickness. “The machine has pre-milling which re references the edges and removes any marks left by a scorer or any chips caused during handling and ensures a perfect edge prior to the application of the tape. The machine also has pre heating of the edge prior to reaching the glue roller to offer a better bond, especially during the winter months when the cold can affect the adhesion to a cold surface. “The ‘secret weapon’ on the machine is the combined top/bottom/end trim and corner rounding station which essentially works on the same principle as a copy router but of industrial design to trim all round the panel. This system reduces the length of machine

EdgebandingNov18.indd 30

frame plus the cost of additional motors required as opposed to machines having separate stations. “After trimming the machine is equipped with top and bottom scrapers followed by top and bottom solvent spray to ensure a clean, ready to use edge as the panel leaves the buffing station. Carl concludes: “The machine is track driven and works at a very productive 12m/min offering an umatched ratio between price and productivity.” Further information including video clips of the machines working can be seen on the company’s website. www.ukwoodworkingmachinery.co.uk
