Comment Visiting Ligna and Interzum this year was as always an interesting, if somewhat tiring affair – but the 2017 iteration was particularly uplifting. Not only was I taken aback by the level and sophistication of development of materials, components, machinery and software systems, it was extremely heartening to hear so much positivity coming from so many businesses, many of which were posting really rosy trading results with a positive prognosis for the coming months. Obviously this will have borne from manufacturers across the UK, Europe and around the world finding that investing in smart technology and equipment and good quality materials and fittings is the best way forward. It would appear, if Ligna and Interzum are representative of an industry, that all is well with the furniture, woodworking and joinery sector – for the time being at least. Having just returned from a trip to visit poplar plywood pioneer Garnica in northern Spain, it was quickly evident that this was a healthy company bearing all the hallmarks of a long-term successful business. As with many such firms which achieve and sustain success over years, decades or longer, Garnica shares key attributes which are always part of a common ethos: an innate creativity matched with capability, a determination to overcome issues, and a resolve to do the right thing and to be innovative. In my opinion, to compete nationally and internationally, these and many other traits build the character of a business which, when added to

good people, means it has a great chance of being successful over the long term in a way that those businesses which only compete on price can never achieve. I’m not sure what the terminology of this latest age of furniture and joinery manufacturing should be called – our European colleagues are pushing Industry 4.0, but I rather see it more broadly defined as intelligent, enlightened and flexible manufacturing – where there are now great opportunities to create products which are driven more by the proclivities of the end-user, than just by price alone. Consumers are now more demonstrative in our connected always-on world and this gives an advantage to manufacturers who are articulate, who value doing the right thing above meeting particular price points decreed by an overzealous marketing team. In a word, this is the age of integrity – an issue I intend to explore further in future issues.

Latham’s materials for V&A plywood exhibition James Latham is providing plywood for the interior of an exhibition about the eclectic history of the sheet material which opens on 15th July at the Victoria and Albert Museum – known as the world’s leading museum of art and design. Plywood: Material of the Modern World will run between 15th July and 12th November this year and will explore the innovative use of plywood in objects ranging from vehicles to furniture, and from architecture to graphic design – offering a new perspective of this versatile material. James Latham’s unrivalled knowledge and passion for timber, and in particular, its incredible history of selling this product – which began more than two and a half centuries ago and included supplying plywood for the manufacture of Spitfire aircraft during World War 2 – has close links to the exhibition which includes the story of the fastest and highest-flying aeroplane of WWII, the de Havilland Mosquito. Other highlights will include a moulded plywood leg splint designed by Charles and Ray Eames in 1942, surfboards, and designs for mass-produced US prefabricated housing. Plywood: Material of the Modern World is cocurated by Christopher Wilk, Keeper of Furniture, Textiles and Fashion at the V&A, and Elizabeth Bisley, curator in the Department of Furniture, Textiles and Fashion at the V&A.

F&JP_285.indd 4

The exhibition brings together significant new research with new acquisitions and objects that have never before been on public display. It will take visitors through plywood’s many reputational transformations: from a cheap product that was often hidden or maligned for its inferiority to solid timber, to the material prized by mid-century modernists and by today’s flourishing maker movement. Chris Sutton, managing director of James Latham says: “This exhibition will look at the many different methods of manufacture using plywood and its history, from ancient times to use in today’s digital age so it is a perfect fit for James Latham, particularly because of our 260year history in which time we will have supplied plywood for many of the innovative uses and applications which are being highlighted.” lathamtimber.co.uk

As part of a major rebrand, VWM has refreshed its website, offering customers a fully transparent look into the company’s operation. As a specialist supplier of woodworking machinery, VWM’s brand new website not only hosts many more new and used products, it also features a corporate video which communicates the company’s ethos and knowledgeable background, and captures its modern showroom and facilities. A special feature of the new site is its ‘Machines Wanted’ page, which enables customers to upload details and images of machines they are looking to sell. The company invites customers to visit www.vwm.co.uk to see the new, improved and interactive portal.

Kite Packaging invests £1.5m in Coventry HQ Kite Packaging is developing its base in Torrington Avenue, Tile Hill, Coventry, to update and modernise its warehouse facilities servicing the Midlands and online customers, and to create extra capacity. The work is being carried out by Wigley Building and Development, the construction arm of The Wigley Group, a leading commercial property company based in Middlemarch Business Park, Coventry. Gavin Ashe, managing partner at Kite Packaging, says: “It is a significant expansion of the site with the creation of a state-of-theart pick and pack operation and extra warehousing for our Midlands key accounts, and a near doubling of our national distribution centre. “One of the key drivers is creating extra space for our growth and this will certainly lead to more jobs. We are currently growing our team by more than 12 and are looking to double this during the next two

years.” Kite Packaging has seen rapid growth since being founded as an employee-owned business in 2001, and establishing its site at Torrington Avenue in 2007, to become one of the largest distributors in the UK. It has built up a strong regional branch network across the UK with six sites including Coventry. Its e-commerce operation and waste compliance business are also based at Torrington Avenue. Gavin adds: “This development comes on the back of major property expansion for Kite Packaging at our branches in Swindon and Letchworth. “Kite Packaging is an employee-

owned business and as such we take a long-term view on investing and trying to build a great working environment for all of our owners.” The work at Torrington Avenue is being overseen by Charlie Brooks, construction director of Wigley Building and Development, the

company recently established from The Wigley Group’s merger with established main contractor Ciexbe Limited. Charlie says: “It is a six-month project and work is on course to be completed in August.” kitepackaging.co.uk

Hettich’s Quadro drawer runner is synonymous with durability and a luxurious running action which spells quality to the user. Hettich has adapted Quadro to give more basic cabinetry real added value in terms of performance and appearance.

Add Quadro, add value

Quadro can now be used in conjunction with 18mm wood or fibreboard in applications where KA runners fitted to the side of the drawer box would more typically have been used. For a small uplift in price, manufacturers can offer the superior performance of Quadro, plus the fact that it is concealed under the drawer box. Quadro features high precision, maintenancefree steel ball bearings, and the whole assembly is made from galvanised steel and therefore

suitable for rooms exposed to moisture. Its profile geometry makes for high tracking stability and strength. The result is a wellbalanced, smooth-running action which is bound to impress end-users. Quadro also benefits from Hettich’s platform concept, providing many options for differentiating furniture using the same drawer and carcass. Choices include partial and fullextension runners, plus Silent System soft close and the innovative sychronised push-to-open mechanism for handleless furniture.

“The addition of Quadro gives a meaningful uplift to a range of furniture without adding significant cost.”

F&JP_285.indd 8

The entry-level Quadro 25 partial extension runner offers a load capacity up to 25kg. Installation is slide on and height adjustment is tool-less. If full extension is called for, the Quadro V6 is the answer, offering a load capacity of up to 30kg. “The addition of Quadro gives a meaningful uplift to a range of furniture without adding significant cost,” says Hettich UK marketing manager Colin Patterson. “As soon as the customer uses or sees the drawer with Quadro as opposed to a more basic alternative, the added value is immediately apparent and that can make all the difference.” 0161 872 9552 info@uk.hettich.com hettich.com

Natural disasters as well as a range of domestic and global threats can have severe, potentially terminal impact on businesses. Manufacturers should take steps to mitigate risks and set out strategies for dealing with major interruptions to their operations.

How resilient is your business? For more than 30 years Kerry London has brokered specialist insurance policies for its clients, as well as designing strategies to allow businesses to continue while issues are resolved and by covering them financially. As an illustration, one of Kerry London’s clients, HRS Heat Exchange Limited, was able to quickly recover after its premises were flooded on Boxing Day in 2015. HRS Heat Exchange Limited manufactures heat transfer products and systems in Sowerby Bridge, in the Calder Valley in West Yorkshire. Flooding hit machinery and property when a 20mile stretch of the River Calder flooded after the river burst its banks. At risk of being unable to fulfil orders, putting its future under threat, HRS was thankful it was covered by Business Interruption insurance as well as being partnered with a specialist broker. Business Interruption insurance – keeping you going HRS was able to claim and cover the cost of the flooding, thanks to a policy which covered threats to the company and provided adequate compensation when disaster struck. Business Interruption insurance is an essential part of protecting your business, covering loss of gross profit and additional expenses incurred by a major interruption. In Kerry London, HRS had a broker that recognised the importance of a personal relationship to enable first-hand understanding of its business and who provided practical support and assistance.

“Rigorous planning will help identify areas of threat and how businesses will respond in a time of crisis” Business Continuity plan helps proactively avoid and mitigate risks associated with a disruption of operations, empowering a business with the ability to react to interruptions. Rigorous planning will help identify areas of threat and how businesses will respond in a time of crisis. It can include, but is not limited to: relocation, alternative work locations for employees and a change in suppliers if necessary. Regular updates, and thinking outside the box It’s critical that a Business Continuity plan is regularly reviewed, tested and adapted. Properly designed, it may even provide alternative

solutions which can get companies back in business faster than reinstating the status quo. With HRS, for example, the best course of action was to quickly find a new production facility, rather than restoring the existing one. Just four weeks after the floods hit, Kerry London had helped HRS source and move into new premises five miles away from the original site, and on higher ground. While the immediate locality and neighbouring competitors struggled to recover, HRS was able to resume production by the end of January, with minimised disruption to its workforce and workflow. 020 7623 4957 kerrylondon.co.uk

New challenges created by the global marketplace Globalisation has brought a raft of business benefits and overseas operations are integral to the success of many manufacturers. However with globalisation comes associated considerations. Have you considered the impact on your business if an overseas supplier was hit by a natural disaster? Insurance policies can cover more than losses from physical damage to businesses’ premises or equipment, so they need be sure to discuss specific risks with their broker. Pre-empting disaster – Business Continuity (BC) Planning Resilience is the key here and so the Business Continuity plan should go hand-in-hand with Business Interruption insurance. A robust

INTERZUM REVIEW

Austrian fittings manufacturer, Blum, offers innovative services and assembly devices that provide ongoing support throughout the entire production process – from planning and ordering to manufacturing and installation.

Blum – the innovative service partner for furniture manufacturers

Blum supports its customers with innovative services along the entire production process

Blum’s Cabinet configurator makes cabinet planning quick and easy, Easystick helps transfer dimensions to Minipress and automatically sets stops on the drilling and insertion machine; and Blum’s Easy Assembly app now has additional interactive features. Industry 4.0, digitalisation and interconnected manufacturing are today’s buzzwords and are relevant to industrial furniture manufacturers, distributors and cabinetmakers. This fourth industrial revolution will, however, only work if a complete set of error-free data is available to users. The focus is on the interconnectivity of machines, electronics and data. Blum sees itself as an innovative service partner that strives to

F&JP_285.indd 14

improve these processes. Consequently, the company has extended its offering of assembly devices and services. Blum has added a Cabinet Configurator, Easystick – a computer-aided device for calculating the fixing positions of its fittings – and additional features to its Easy Assembly app. Blum’s new Cabinet Configurator makes cabinet planning easy and is the successor product to Dynaplan, Blum’s existing cabinet planner. The Cabinet Configurator automatically works out and provides all the information needed for manufacturing, such as wooden parts and drilling positions. The information is immediately available at the press of a button – provided as a drawing or as CAD data.

Further features include a user-friendly interface and clear 3D visualisation. The right fittings are selected by Blum’s tried and tested Product Configurator. Thanks to integrated collision checks, no more planning errors are made and trial applications are no longer necessary. In addition, users can collect compiled parts lists in their shopping basket and then simply transfer them to their distributors’ ordering system. Complex fittings systems require precise assembly techniques. Easystick for Minipress consists of a ruler with automated stops and a control unit with a display. The device makes it easier to find the right drilling positions and set up the drilling and insertion machine. Thanks to

While furnishing trends are subject to rapid change, a common denominator has remained the same in furniture design for years: personal styling. Whether a cool industrial look or an inviting Scandinavian style – these days interiors must have personality.

Grass highlights at Interzum 2017 With its movement systems, Grass helps furniture manufacturers, joiners and interior designers to exercise maximum design freedom. At interzum 2017, the company presented numerous product innovations and impressed with an unusual new concept for its stand. Nova Pro Scala Nova Pro slide technology, already proven millions of times over in practical use, is now progressing to the next generation. With the comprehensive new drawer range Nova Pro Scala, Grass presented a system which offers the variability to harmonise with the contemporary styles of tomorrow’s living spaces. Based on the track-proven Nova Pro slide technology, the comprehensive new drawer solution creates maximum scope for creative styling as well as enabling efficient production processes. Covered in laser-welded, powder-coated steel, the characteristic drawer side is a unique trademark; and the complete drawer with its almost limitless design options becomes an individual and special experience. Thanks to its right-angled shape, the intentionally understated metal version can be combined with designer panels to suit all tastes, such as premium mineral resin surfaces or luxury real wood versions.

Tiomos Klappe flap

NP Scala H250

Tavinea Sorto

Kinvaro D and Tiomos flap hinge With these two new products, Grass is increasing the comfort of opening and closing flap cabinets. For interzum, Tiomos was also presented as a flap hinge; together with the equally new Kinvaro D flap holder, it forms a harmonious and elegant combo for drinks compartment flaps. Both products are also in the new Night surface finish, continuing the elegance of dark surfaces on the interior of the piece of furniture. Tavinea With Tavinea, Grass has developed an organising system that carries this modern design power through to the innermost corners of a piece of furniture. The comprehensive interior fit-out system has been developed for drawers in kitchen, bathroom and living room furniture and which is available in two versions. Tavinea Sorto consists of two frames (B186 and B276) and a crossbar. The frames do not have a base and, thanks to the integrated anti-slip device, can also be positioned in the drawer without anti-slip mats. The clear space between the frames is available for storing items. In combination with the appropriate

accessories, such as the knife block and the cross panel, a perfect organising system can be created in the drawer – offering excellent organisation for little money. The robust, scratch-resistant surface matches the drawer sides in terms of material and colour. Tiomos hinge system With the development of the Tiomos hinge system, Grass has written a new chapter in the history of furniture design. With the concealed Tiomos Hidden hinge, which was launched at interzum 2017, Grass has added another component that makes it possible to move doors elegantly and almost invisibly. The concealed Tiomos Hidden hinge is recessed in the cabinet and thereby is flush with the surfaces of the door and of the inside wall of the piece of furniture. However, in terms of functionality, it certainly is not second-best compared to its visible colleagues: it is unusually strong, and can be adjusted in three dimensions. Tipmatic Soft-close The Grass range now features a new highlight for kitchens, bathrooms and living areas: Tipmatic Soft-close, a system that perfectly combines two popular comfort aspects. From the outside, only a sleek surface is visible – completely handle-free. Slight pressure is all that is needed to open the drawer. It is also gently closed with a familiar movement without any sudden braking. With these features, the new Grass opening system provides access to a new dimension in comfort. Tipmatic Soft-close combines two familiar functions: the mechanical opening of handle-free fronts (Tipmatic) plus the elegant, damped closure of the drawer (Soft-close). Another noteworthy advantage: Tipmatic Softclose can be easily retrofitted on the Nova Pro and Dynapro slide systems. Vionaro For interzum 2017, Grass expanded the design options of Vionaro, adding a completely new dimension: vertical surface dividers. Vionaro iD – offering a maximum degree of personal styling with its add-on modular design elements – gives tomorrow’s drawer a unique appearance. The combination of the basic drawer side with a choice of personalised, combinable design sleeves creates a flexible system with unlimited design options. Thanks to intelligent clip technology, the elegant design sleeves can easily be attached to fitted drawer sides without using tools, and will sit firmly without adhesive bonding. 0121 500 5824 grass.eu

OVVO wins Best of the Best award for V-0930 In the striking setting of the Rheinterrassen, a glittering awards ceremony held on 15th May marked the start of the Interzum 2017, where the OVVO V-0930 Connection system was awarded Best of the Best – the top prize awarded only to innovations that feature ground-breaking design and set new standards for form and function in their industry. Application for Interzum Award: Intelligent Material & Design was open to all exhibitors at Interzum 2017, and the submissions were assessed in late March by an expert jury of five respected and independent international experts. The judging criteria were as follows: Degree of innovation, Functionality, Material Quality, Design and Sustainability. The innovative new OVVO V-0930 Connection system received the top prize of Best of the Best from the judging panel, setting it apart from its competitors and confirming the high quality of the product. The new smaller connector greatly extends the range of materials, industries and applications in which OVVO can be used, and will amplify the scale of efficiencies that manufacturers will achieve when OVVO is incorporated into production/manufacturing processes. It is available in both permanent and releasable versions.

This year’s Ligna show was all about Industry 4.0 and as we’ve come to expect from the world’s largest woodworking solutions company, Homag put on an impressive display. The company launched its new digital platform, tapio, which provides live status updates across the whole production facility.

Homag automatically leads the field at Ligna In addition to this, Homag showed 50 machines, covering every performance category, which communicate with each other to provide end-to-end production automation. Homag’s new software platform delivers total solutions from the point of sale through to production and packaging. The company’s marketing theme, Your Solution encompasses machines and technologies that will grow with your business. This enables joiners, cabinetmakers and industrial furniture producers to not only

address the individual needs of their customer, but also to handle challenging products and process a raft of traditional and modern materials. The launch of tapio – a Ligna exclusive and global first from HOMAG Homag created excitement and buzz at Ligna with the launch of tapio, its new digital platform. Built in partnership with Microsoft, the cloud-based service is the first of its kind for the woodworking industry. Suitable for all, whether it’s

a small workshop, a medium-sized operation or a global corporation, tapio works across the entire production chain. Accessible through an app on a mobile phone, tablet or even smart watch, the ‘mesboard’ screen displays live information on production progress and the status of all workstations. By pooling data from machinery status, servicing and maintenance, it provides the operator with live updates of their production facilities. Alerting notifications allow the operator to work more efficiently;

they highlight where their attention needs to be focused. It also reminds the operator when future maintenance needs to be facilitated or sends a warning when a critical value exceeds or falls below a certain level. This reduces any possible downtime and ensures peak production times are not compromised. Additionally, the serviceboard feature ensures that errors can be identified quickly and easily with the aid of video diagnoses. This allows the operator to implement a solution immediately.

Two Profi KAL 610 edgebanders running in tandem

Furniture production – from bespoke to industrial Homag’s showpiece in hall 14 was its completely networked batch size 1 plant. This high-tech furniture production plant consisted of seven machines linked together. The networked production solution included a horizontal storage system, the TLF 411 with a suction traverse ST 71 for handling a diverse range of materials. The cutting cell featured the new Homag HPS 320 flexTec beam saw with fully automatic part stacking. This robot cell has the option of an automatic outfeed, various lifting table settings for automatic stacking or a combination of roller conveyor and lift tables. Edge processing was handled by two Profi KAL 610 edgebanders running in tandem. The machines glued all edges using PU adhesive and a unique offsetting station provided unprecedented workpiece circulation to substantially reduce the floor space required. To maintain a constant flow of materials, the networked plant utilised the Homag TLB 321 order picking centre. The TLB buffers,

sorts and picks the material flow over the entire process chain. The drilling and hardware fitting was handled with the Homag ABF 600, a CNC-controlled machine especially designed to handle sensitive materials used for front facing parts. Its advanced clamping system is particularly suited to the gentle and efficient processing of materials susceptible to damage. Once all the carcass parts were produced, the electrical throughfeed case clamp, MDE 120, was used to construct the furniture carcasses. This advanced machine clamps sensitive high-quality or mitred carcasses. Completing the production, the cardboard cutting machine VKS 250 produced just-in-time custom packaging at minimal piece costs.

Small entry level workshop solutions in just 80m2 Visitors to hall 14 found an array of entry level technology. This included both standalone machines as well as the latest smart solutions for kitchen, office and bedroom furniture manufacturers. Homag demonstrated an entry level production concept with mitre cuts being carried out on an HPP 130 panel dividing saw. The workshop was supplemented by a carcass clamp and Homag BHX 055 CNC drilling machine for complete processing.

Standardised operation and control software All the machines in the networked plant were operated using powerTouch which ensures a familiar look and feel for the users. The networking of the machines in the batch size 1 plant was controlled via woodFlex software.

Industrial entry level solutions Catering for all, Homag also presented advanced entry level solutions for industrial-sized manufacturers. A storage, sawing and nesting cell was fully networked with a drilling and dowel driving machine featuring full endto-end data flow.

Edgebanders for woodworking shops Delivering premium edge quality for entry level users, Homag demonstrated the popular Ambition 1120 FC. With a joint-trimming unit and a profile trimming tool for perfect corner rounding, it allows for complete workpiece processing. The flexible finish zone featured two free spaces which were equipped with two standard quickchange heads – a profile scraper blade and a glue joint scraper blade. Operated by a 7in easyTouch control screen with clear graphic display and 20 storable production programs, the 1120 FC is small yet powerful. Equipped with all the impressive standard specification of the entry level Ambition 1100 series, the 1200 series boasts a tiltable end trimming unit for both straight and chamfer trimming and a top/bottom trimming unit for perfect edge finishing. Homag lead the field at Ligna 2017 showcasing its latest innovations technology

for all edgebanding machines in the Ambition series. Due to popularity, a standardised top-mounted glue application system for entry level edgebanders will be available from Ligna onwards. Homag also demonstrated its latest zero joint technology, laserTec – Next Generation. Homag has built upon its successful laserTec system with a solution that offers zero visible joints for both batch size 1 and in-series production. Offering a more compact and reliable system, laserTec – Next Generation is an ideal solution for the faster production of invisible joint edges. Panel dividing technology Experts from Homag showed the latest innovations in beam saw technology, emphasising the importance of giving more control to the operator. This increased level of control not only improves the cutting process with a greater degree of safety, but also enhances overall efficiency in production. Homag presented the significantly updated and improved CADmatic 5 software. Available for all saws from series 3 upwards, it has been redesigned to be easy, efficient and intelligent. The system’s innovative graphics guide the operator through the input and processing steps. Not only can the operator see what the machine is currently doing but they will also see which work step comes next. Controlling the machine via the

F&JP_285.indd 24

keyboard and the mouse has become a thing of the past. For simplicity and convenience, the user is now able to navigate the screen by touch. Homag also presented its revolutionary new panel dividing modular solution, intelliGuide. There are three versions, intelliGuide basic, advanced and professional. In the basic version, LED’s display on the top pressure beam to show the operator where the panel needs to be placed. On the advanced version the saw interacts with the operator ensuring that the parts are placed in the correct place on the saw providing visual warnings if an error has been made.

The more advanced version, intelliGuide professional, uses a laser projection system. It projects handling instructions, in the form of symbols, directly onto the parts being processed. Not only does this increase safety and accuracy for the operator, but also the machine operator knows immediately what they have to do, without having to look at the screen. Surface technology Trends within the furniture industry have seen the demand for PUR laminating adhesive grow significantly. This has led to Homag extending its product range of laminating machines to include the FKF 200 and 250 for both high-

gloss and laminate coating. The line on display at Ligna was able to apply both sheet and roll materials in a throughfeed process. In addition, the operation of the SWT 300 series sanding machines has been simplified. Now, the user interface has been integrated into the machine and is used in a similar way to an app on a smartphone. Users can operate the machine by touch, simply using swiping or drag and drop actions for faster set-up. Visitors were impressed by the five heavy duty widebelt sanding machines which ranged from the SWT124 all the way through to the industrial multi headed models. machinery which was very well received and orders were taken throughout the five day event. Entry point for the range is the GSH 100 1350mm wide reciprocating throughfeed spraying machine. Customers then have the choice of solutions up to fully robotic automatic painting and lacquering plants. Solid timber As a further indication of its growth strategy, Homag presented two four-sided moulders from its new range of planer moulders. The LPP 305 five-head machine has a capacity of 230 x 130mm, with a feed speed from 6 to 24m/min and cutter heads speeds variable from 4000 to 8000rpm. The larger LPP 307F model with seven heads was demonstrated, attracting great interest from the crowds. All models have Homag’s, simple to use, powerTouch controller as standard. CNC technology Making its début at Ligna was the new BMG 310 CNC series. Building on the success of Homag CNC machines, the 310 series has improved access with even more space for tools. With the addition of a robust and stable sliding gantry system, the CNC offers unlimited production possibilities and allows the operator to access the edging tape magazine, drill block and routing spindle with ease. As the 310 series is accessible from all three sides, the operator has unrestricted table access for loading and unloading the machine without fences and barriers. This makes production fast and simple. The BMG 310 is available with three, four and five axis router spindles and a selection of drill blocks. With a new 32-slot tool-changer the operator has rapid access to tools, providing the machine with a high level of versatility. The design features a plate that has an outer ring with 24 slots and an inner ring with eight slots, ensuring optimum use of space. In terms of the latest nesting technology, Homag demonstrated its solution for cutting customised front designs so that the panels match perfectly later in the assembly process. The new nesting method enables precision cutting of individually designed fronts to create a perfect overall appearance.

Leitz expertise was demonstrated by innovative tool solutions. The new cutterhead system ProfilCut Q Diamond with indexable inserts sets new standards as a pioneer in machining wood. The unique combination of its ultralight aluminium tool body and resharpenable, diamond edges with constant diameter ensures maximum productivity combined with significantly higher efficiency. The profile tooling system is used in numerous sectors of both wood and plastic processing. With the WhisperCut circular saw blade, Leitz has designed user-friendly and future-

oriented saw technology. Due to the intelligent arrangement of various edges, perfect staggered cuts and reduced cutting forces are achieved. When used on circular saw benches and cross cut saws, even at idle speed, the noise level is dramatically reduced. The proven HeliCut program for timber construction was expanded for LIGNA and has transferred its benefits to numerous other applications. LIGNA in Hannover is the international leading fair for machines, systems and tools for the machining and processing of wood. The complete value-added chain of the wood industry is represented – from timber harvest, through to industrial production. For 2017, LIGNA

SCM arrived at Ligna 2017 strengthened by a continuous and impressive growth – 2016 ended with a turnover of €600m, up 15% compared with 2015, confirming its solid financial position. The company says this result is extraordinary in that it has been driven by the wood sector, which has exceeded €430m in turnover, with a growth of over 15%.

SCM focused on innovation at Ligna For SCM, 2017 has begun with a double digit increase in orders and turnover, a further improvement on the alreadygood results of recent years. SCM’s presence at Ligna confirms its leadership position in the technologies for woodworking processes, that today is represented by a single brand: SCM. The models inherit the distinctiveness and names of the original brands. The doubling of the turnover for cell systems, plants and production lines for flexible industrial productions has been particularly satisfying for SCM. They are demanding orders, with investment costs that range from €1.5m to €10m and the leap forward of this sector proves the maturity achieved by SCM Engineering. Visitors were able to admire the technological solutions and the innovative Cell Lean 4.0. Multimedia and virtual technologies, like the two huge video walls and the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset, were deployed to great effect to show all the machines and systems solutions produced by SCM at work. Visitors could experience a multi-sensory experience of navigating inside the SCM technologies and further appreciate each single detail of the machining process. At Ligna 2017, on an enormous 4000m2 stand, SCM Group presented an impressive series of new developments in terms of systems, software and individual technological solutions. Of particular interest, was the Cell Lean 4.0, which is a concrete application of the concepts of Industry 4.0 and mass customisation. The aim of the cell is to meet the individual needs of the end user, whilst maintaining the advantages of the industrial production. The whole system is completely automated, managed by the Maestro Watch software, supported by an anthropomorphic robot fitted

F&JP_285.indd 32

with a piece recognition viewer and managed by a single – and not necessarily expert – operator. The Cell Lean 4.0 is extremely flexible and able to produce a wide variety of pieces, from the production of a large number of panels ready to be assembled to batch one. The cell uses standard, absolutely reliable, high performing, easy-to-use and configure machines. The system operates automatically from the moment the order is launched and is open to every operating system. The cell is therefore able to automatically manage with a single operator, all the machining phases, starting from the standard panel to the assembly of the furniture. During Ligna, the Cell Lean 4.0 was used to produce libraries that will be installed in the recently rebuilt schools in Central Italy, destroyed in the 2016 summer and autumn earthquakes. The new Maestro Suite software was also presented at Ligna. The most significant development affects Maestro Cut, the software for single blade panel saws that is fitted with a new, completely multitouch user interface on a 21in 16:9 screen, which makes management extremely easy. Maestro Cut, available across the whole range of panel saws, can be used to manage all the machine functions. The top of the

line performance is achieved with the Maestro Ottimo Cut, the new optimiser produced in collaboration with a well-known Italian university, that has developed an extraordinary heuristic algorithm. This cutting optimiser for angular panel saws reduces calculation times from 10 to 30% and produces cutting diagrams that reduce waste by up to 50%. This achievement places Maestro Ottimo Cut at the absolute pinnacle of its category. The numerical control work centres have also seen new developments. The Maestro CNC has the new Maestro 3D function, which allows for the automatic creation of sophisticated machining programs, such as the ones required to create bas-reliefs. The Maestro CNC specialised machining operations have been augmented with the new version of Maestro Nest, that guarantees an infinite number of new nesting operations. Maestro Setting, an optimiser for stand-alone and line drilling units, is a new development that allows for the tooling of drilling cycles and reduces the times of the machining cycle, with a significant competitive advantage for users. All SCM software is open system to allow any type of connection with third party software, for the total control of the machine functions and ensuring that operators can work simply and intuitively.

At Ligna, SCM presented over 60 technological solutions of its various ranges, designed to meet the demands of any type of company, from small woodworking workshops to large multinationals. After the extraordinary reception at the Open House, held at the Rimini headquarters at the beginning of the year, more space was given over to the new Morbidelli M100 and M200 work centres. The Morbidelli P200 can easily deal with the increasingly common problems of non-standard and shaped panels – this solution was one of the stars of the exhibition. Other items of interest were SCM’s edgebanders with controlled axes, that cancel set-up times and ensure a high level of flexibility. Many new developments were also to be found in the machines for small woodworking workshops, such as the double tilting circular saw Minimax SI X and the edgebander Minimax me40. SCM is now the singular brand for the wood sector, but each model maintains the distinctiveness and names of the original brands. Therefore within the group, SCM brings together the woodworking technology and CMS the technologies developed to machine composites, aluminium, plastic, wood, glass, stone and metal. 0115 977 0044 scmgroup.com/en_GB

European launch of the new Combi-MR at Ligna Combilift is well known for introducing new models to its range at an unprecedented pace, and 2017 is proving to be no exception. The Irish specialist manufacturer of materials handling solutions displayed over 15 of its versatile products on two stands at this year’s show. These included models from its multidirectional C-series and CB series, four-way and two-directional side-loaders and the VNA AisleMaster articulated forklift. The numerous visitors who made a beeline for Combilift during a busy Ligna witnessed the new Combi-MR, making its European début. This stand-on multi-directional reach truck – a sit-down option is also available – offers extreme manoeuvrability in confined areas, enabling operation in reduced aisle widths for increased storage capacity. With a lift capacity of 2300kg, it comes with optional lift heights of up to 5552mm. The Combi-MR combines the capabilities of a reach truck with the versatility of multi-directional travel for operation in tight spaces and is characterised by its unique steering function. The joystick enables seamless switching of the direction of travel and allows the operator to perform compact turns. With the ability to handle both palletised and longer loads, it will enable operations across the timber sector to benefit from faster procedures.

This electric-powered forklift offers a high level of ergonomic comfort and safety for the operator: the positioning of the large drive wheel to the rear right corner enables low level entry and exit and is therefore less tiring for the operator when a lot of picking is involved. The single drive wheel is fitted with a large 16in rubber tyre and features 360° steering rotation. The benefits of AC technology in the drive and steering ensure optimum and efficient performance. The rear articulated axle provides maximum traction and a smooth ride for the operator even across uneven surfaces, inside and out. The design of the overhead guard offers excellent visibility of the surrounding area for enhanced safety. The on-board ergonomicpositioned display provides the operator with constant monitoring of the truck. “We originally developed this model following demand from the US market and having seen the very positive reaction to it there we believe it will become equally popular in Europe, which is why we chose the Ligna show as the platform to introduce this to a wider audience on this side of the Atlantic,” says Combilift MD Martin McVicar. Focus on electric models Combilift continues to add to its range of electric models and this is evident at Ligna – around half of the exhibits on show were electric powered

and included a Combi-ST stand-on truck, the Combi-WR4 multi-directional pedestrian stacker, a Combi-CBE counterbalance design four-way truck and the Aisle-Master VNA articulated forklift. The majority of electric products from other manufacturers are designed for indoor use only but Combilift is offering for more versatile forklifts by incorporating rubber tyres into its electric range to enable them to offer good traction on a variety of surfaces so that it can transition easily from inside to outdoors. Improvements in battery technology also enable much longer operation before recharging is required, making electric models a viable replacement for diesel or LPG trucks for many applications. combilift.com

At this year’s Ligna event, Kleiberit presented interesting developments and solutions in the fields of surface finishing, surface lamination, edgebanding, profile wrapping and LVT flooring adhesives.

Kleiberit’s impressive adhesives and coatings at Ligna Production lines were running live demonstrating the advantages and uses of Kleiberit’s impressive HotCoating technology, including high-gloss and supermatt finishing for wood-based boards, and the roll-to-roll coating method. Also on show was an inline digital printing line that can print inline and subsequently hot coat in a single pass – a method that Kleiberit recently enhanced in co-operation with machine manufacturer Huser. The system’s compact, integrated digital printer is worth a special mention. Embossed structures are also possible, thus opening up new opportunities for paper manufacturers, relating to profile wrapping and surface lamination. In future, paper laminations up to a width of 1.6m will be possible. Wide printed and coated papers hold substantial potential for the furniture industry – manufacturers can laminate large surfaces and coat edges in one go with Kleiberit’s technology – as well as the flooring sector. Luxury vinyl tiles (LVT) are currently in high demand and flooring manufacturers are calling for materials that are printable up to 2.1m and also have abrasion-proof coating, a super-

matt finish and can be reactivated in a short-cycle press. Such papers provide a soft touch finish that also has excellent acoustic properties and can even be embossed with deep structures. A significant advantage of the HotCoating technology is that the very low glossiness of the super-matt surfaces is achieved by physical means – which offer

numerous other benefits alongside preventing glossing – rather than with chemical matting agents. Kleiberit’s adhesives unit also showed interesting applications and solutions, such as: The future of flat lamination – lightweight, highest surface quality, excellent processing. Kleiberit PUR hotmelt adhesives create new possibilities for

manufacturers of innovative components for the wood, furniture and construction industries. Particularly noteworthy is the unmatched resistance against heat, cold, and water influences as well as the tremendous bond strength. Especially in the production of furniture components with thin foils, top surfaces are achieved under the best processing properties. Edgebanding in premium quality Whether in stainless steel, aluminium, chrome or for the edging of, for example, polymer and glass components for a seamless edge – with Kleiberit PUR hotmelt adhesives the application possibilities for design edges are unlimited and reliable. This approach is particularly appropriate for kitchen and bathroom components: an invisible glue line, no additional costs and no problems resulting from steam, water and heat stress.

As always, the Kündig stand at Ligna in Hanover, Germany was a place buzzing with activity with both existing and potential new customers converging for demonstrations and to see the latest developments in both wide-belt and edge-sanding technology.

Kündig on top form at Ligna On display was a selection of the traditional style machines from the Premium range including a compact 650mm wide machine that could sand components up to 400mm in height. For high volume manufacturers, an example of the Botop top and bottom sanding machines was on display. This particular machine had two upper- and two lowersanding heads with each part of the machine having a dedicated calibration roller followed by an oblique segmented pad. This machine is ideal for the large scale production of veneered boards where the raw MDF core can be accurately calibrated and once pressed the board can then be finished using the segmented pads. Each segment is action-controlled and therefore offers equal and even sanding across the surface. This system protects the vulnerable parts of the board, namely the corners and the edges by sensing the area to be sanded and also protects any areas where there may be cut-outs, for example vision panels in doors. For manufacturers of kitchen doors there was quite a selection of machines of differing configurations and specifications. These included a number of lacquer sanding machines all of which had at least one of the heads in the oblique position to ensure the highest

possible surface finish and free from the defects associated with straight line sanding. An example of the high gloss cross belt was also shown which can finish sprayed surfaces using a 2000 grit abrasive. The Kündig bk brush system was also shown which is the ideal solution for those that manufacture either five-piece or routed MDF doors. The bk uses a cup brush system which both oscillates and orbits giving an intense yet random

sanding into profiled surfaces whilst also breaking the edges in preparation for sealing and spraying. Shown for the first time was a new and what Kündig says is unique multi-purpose inner cross belt which is ideally suited to the company which is seeking to generate a number of different surface finishes. This all-new system can be used for veneers and lacquered surfaces and can even generate a rusticstyle finish especially popular for manufacturers of floorboards. Another popular system for manufacturers of floorboards demonstrated was the structure

brush which can be supplied as a dedicated machine with multiple heads or alternatively as an option on a wide-belt machine once again expanding the possibilities of surface finishes. Last, but by no means least, was the selection of popular edgesanding machines which included the new Uniq-S Lacquer for the pre-sanding of MDF edges and then using the action-controlled sanding pad can be used to de-nib sealed and then sprayed edges. This machine along with the lacquer specification wide-belt sander gives an all round solution to those producing high gloss doors. kundig.co.uk

Simple is more efficient All Kundig Sanders are simple to operate. A machine that is simple to operate means it is easy to use. If it is easy to use then it is user friendly. If it is user friendly anyone can use the machine correctly. If used correctly not only are the best results achieved, but using the machine correctly means less mistakes. Less mistakes means better efficiency. Better efficiency means higher productivity. Higher productivity means higher profit and as we all know time is money. Maybe this is why Kündig-sanders are beloved by those who work with them. Easy to use, they help reduce errors under stress. A Kündig always speaks the language of it’s user – whether it be English, German, French or even Russian.

The Ligna trade show is hosted every two years In Hanover, Germany and is one of the largest international woodworking machinery exhibitions. This is the venue where manufacturers from around the globe go to meet new and existing customers and look to make contacts to supply goods into new markets.

J & C O’Meara at Ligna 2017 Some brands will be familiar names which have already been introduced to UK furniture manufacturers, whilst others may be less familiar and may just be waiting to be discovered. Having attended these exhibitions over the last 25 years, J & C O’Meara has seen many changes to the markets where the quality of some lesser-known manufacturers have made them worthy of comparison with the more renowned top brands and where some of the top brands have had to adapt to more intense competition. “As a totally independent supplier of machinery,” explains Carl O’Meara, “we are not bound by contracts to supply from individual

sources where machines go through various channels pushing up prices etc, but enjoy the freedom of choosing what we believe to be the highest quality equipment imported directly from the manufacturer to give a range of premium quality products minus the premium quality price tag. “At Ligna, as well as looking for new and innovative products, we were also working alongside our existing suppliers and assisting them with demonstrations and enquiries from all corners of the globe. These included the manufacturers of our best-selling and innovative Genisis 512S edgebander with pre-milling and corner rounding.

“With over 60 machines sold in the last three years, this machine has proved to be simply unbeatable for the small- to medium-sized kitchen/bedroom furniture manufacturer,” says Carl. “Genisis have been our bestselling panel saw to date with over 120 installations throughout the UK. The design of the new station is based on technology from the Lumina series with HSK adapter. The station is easily removed via a change-over carriage, which makes cleaning the glue application nozzle even more simple. In addition, further Glu Jet stations can also be exchanged on the same machine and even combined with LTRONIC on the Lumina Industry version to activate laser edging. The new vertical panel saws Sector 1255 and 1260 have a footprint from as little as 5m². They

are unbeatable in this area and simple to use, saving the cost of additional space and prolonged training. Holz-Her has also tackled the issue of manufacturing cabinets on CNC machines without any programming with the new NexTec models. Derived from Next Technology, users can produce furniture even more easily and quickly with this new nesting technology, without programming. Simply select, position, and you‘re ready to go. At Ligna, the supervisory board of the Weinig Group announced extremely positive growth for the group at the end of the 2016 financial year. Order inflow rose by 16% compared with the previous year and this trend has continued

47

into 2017. Orders to the end of April showed 17% growth. The board passed an investment budget of more than €30m, and plans include a new administrative building and showroom at the Holz-Her site in Nürtingen at a cost of €10m. There was also a focus on growing the group’s personnel, with plans to increase the number of employees to 2100. The personnel at Weinig head office in Tauberbischofsheim, Germany alone is expected to grow by 6% to a total of 900 employees. Also opening this summer is the UK’s brand new centre of technical excellence at Weinig’s longestablished location in Abingdon, Oxfordshire. 01235 557600 weinig.co.uk

Dust Control Systems (DCS) has recently completed installation work on a substantial new dust extraction system for Crystal Doors – one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of vinyl-wrapped doors.

DCS wraps it up at Crystal Doors

From its 30,000ft2 manufacturing facility, just off the M62 on the outskirts of Rochdale, Crystal Doors’ 34-strong workforce is dedicated to the production of bespoke vinyl-wrapped doors and accessories for kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms, and manufactures over 200,000 pieces a year. The company offers a vast selection of designs, foils and materials, and has the capability of profiling doors up to 3m in length, as well as custom-printed, curved and 3-dimensional panels. More recently, the installation of high-tech robotic paint and glue spraying equipment, which utilises 3D laser technology, has increased production speeds and ensures a perfect finish for painted doors. Established in 1994, by managing

F&JP_285.indd 48

director Richard Hagan, Crystal Doors has earned a distinguished reputation for its environmental quality and efficiency achievements, with year-on-year improvements in environmental performance indicators, and has gained recognition from industry, business and environmental organisations, including being named Business of the Year 2015 in the Rochdale Business Awards. The company is FSC- and PEFC-accredited and certified by BM TRADA, and is currently progressing towards ISO 14001 environmental management certification. Over 99% of all waste is recycled, including collection and on-site storage of wood waste to fuel a 980kW biomass boiler; providing heat and hot water for the factory and offices. Since re-

locating to Rochdale six years ago, energy consumption and electricity costs for the building have been reduced by replacing over 90% of the lighting with LED units, or highefficiency alternatives. However, in common with most production units, dust and fume extraction is the biggest single energy consumer and, although Crystal Doors had previously invested in high-efficiency extraction equipment from DCS, the existing filter unit pre-dated the relocation to Rochdale. DCS sales director, Melvyn Bathgate, explains: “With the increased levels of production that Crystal Doors has achieved through investments in new equipment, the 20,000m3/hr capacity filter was working close to its limit – even with our Ecogate energy-saving

With assistance from a 25-tonne crane, the team of DCS installation engineers made light work of positioning and securing the new filter

technology installed.” “DCS and Crystal Doors go back over 20 years,” says Richard Hagan, “and I had no hesitation in asking Melvyn to put forward a proposal for a new system which would fulfil both our current and future needs. “Also, our factory is situated alongside Rochdale Canal – which is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest by Natural England – so, as well as being energy-efficient and ‘future proof’ in terms of its capacity, it’s very important that the system design

and engineering quality safeguards against the risk of MDF dust ending up in the canal.” Having considered all of Crystal Doors’ extraction requirements, including further planned investments in new production equipment, DCS submitted designs and costs for a comprehensive installation project which would need to be implemented to a very strict deadline, over a long weekend shutdown. “Our design and project management team had planned the work to the last nut and bolt, and our installation engineers worked with military precision to meet the deadline,” comments Melvyn Bathgate. “Production at Crystal Doors finished at the end of the late shift on the Thursday night and we were committed to commissioning the new system for production to start up again at 6.30am the following Tuesday. The Schuko filter was delivered to site in pre-constructed sections then builtup in advance, on adjacent ground, ready to swing into place on the Friday morning.” The old filter unit has been replaced with an ATEX-Certified Schuko ECOVAR VALIDUS modular chain filter, with a flow-optimised

cascade system of 5 x 30kW fans, capable of extracting up to 80,000m3/hr from four separate lines. Dust-laden air extracted from the factory is drawn through anti-static, polyester needle-felt DCS installed a Schuko ECOVAR VALIDUS modular filter unit with 80,000m3/hr extraction capacity

tubular filter bags, and waste dust is continuously removed from the filter media by a pulse jet cleaning train, with secondary removal of any remaining deposits by a pneumaticmechanical shaking system. The waste dust falls into the lower hopper section of the unit and is then discharged, pressure-free, by means of a rotary valve, to a screw conveyor which in turn feeds a bucket elevator; finally delivering the waste into a large storage silo. The installation also includes four ATEX-approved CARZ backpressure flap valves; one in each of the four main ducts. In the event of a dust explosion, the valves prevent the effects of a pressure wave and flames travelling from the filter, back along ductwork, and into the factory. DCS has also provided additional fire safety and air quality monitoring at Crystal Doors: a four-zone spark detection system will trigger a fast acting water extinguisher if a spark is detected in either of the four main ducts, and the integrity of the system’s cleaning efficiency is constantly monitored by a particulate emission measuring system which has sensors fitted to each of the four return air ducts. As well as delivering clean warm air to the factory to maintain optimum temperature for vinyl application, one of the return air outlets replenishes air extracted from the spray booth; ensuring a

warm, dust-free atmosphere for a quality finish and quick drying times. Key to achieving the energyefficiency targets projected by DCS is the installation of an Ecogate greenBOX MASTER SRL 200. With the capacity to control and interrogate up to 200 motorised gates, and up to four variable speed drives, the MASTER SRL 200 is the most sophisticated control unit in the Ecogate technology range. The system auto-starts when the first machine is powered up, constantly optimises fan speeds throughout a three-shift production schedule, and auto-stops when all machines are shut down. Setup, monitoring and service functions are all accessible via the colour touch screen, and stored machine activity data can be downloaded to a removable flash drive. Furthermore, all control functions, activity logging and data storage can be securely accessed from any authorised internet-connected PC. The MASTER SRL also maintains minimal airflow to ensure a balanced system, programs filter cleaning cycles, and generates status indicators for system errors.

The benefits of the Ecogate ‘Extraction-on-Demand’ system have been well-documented in the press since DCS first introduced the brand to the UK in 2010, and it’s now a ‘must have’ component for any extraction installation; whether it’s a new system or a retrofit installation. Ecogate optimised extraction systems automatically adjust power output to the fans, in real time, to match the exact requirements of the manufacturing process, resulting in significant energy and cost savings – at Crystal Doors, early indications show that the new system is running at almost half the cost of the previous installation. Richard Hagan concludes: “As always, the service provided by DCS was exemplary, and we now have the most efficient extraction system possible for our business, with capacity to spare and a life expectancy in excess of 20 years.” 0800 040 7116 dcslimited.co.uk

Stenner ST100R resaw supplied and installed by Daltons Wadkin

The company specialises in timber joists and sheet material whilst stocking a large range of softwood timbers for construction and joinery as well as timber-based sheet material, MDF sheets and T&G chipboard flooring. Director Sam Chhita recently looked to upgrade the company’s production facility by investing in state-of-the-art sawing machinery. Andy Walsh, sales director at Daltons Wadkin, was approached and after detailed discussions to ascertain the most effective equipment for JK’s requirements, a Salvador S200 Superpush Automatic Programmable Crosscutting System was recommended and subsequently installed at Rugby. The machine has a 6200mm infeed capacity and 150mm depth of cut and immediately had a dramatic effect on JK Timber’s crosscutting capacity and performance. At the same time, a new Stenner ST100R band resaw was also supplied and installed providing

updated pitless high capacity sawing combined with the latest user-friendly machine control systems. Sam Chhita points out: “We had a crosscutting job which used to take one man four days to complete on our old machine. We can now do it on the Salvador in eight hours.” Regarding the Stenner, he adds: “This machine outperforms anything we have had before. We could never really handle deep cutting on hardwood but the new Stenner will cut 9in hardwood with ease and will produce arris rails five times quicker than with our old resaw.” Andy Walsh was delighted with the opportunity to provide two machines of such high quality and says: “JK Timber’s requirements were fairly straightforward in that they simply needed the right equipment to update and enhance the capacity of their mill. The Stenner and Salvador machines were the perfect answer.” 0115 986 5201 sales@daltonswadkin.com daltonswadkin.com

Automated robots are increasingly becoming the crucial key to any successful manufacturing process by injecting their core purpose of delivering higher productivity and increased efficiency. Integrating automation can uncover a number of benefits to any business, by improving the quality of products as well as reducing material wastage due to the elimination of manual handling.

Starke’s productivity soars thanks to robotic sorting cell from Homag Automation Unlike the core values of kitchen manufacturer Starke Objekteinrichtungen, which have remained the same for more than 100 years, the company’s production processes have continuously evolved ensuring its key principles of high quality, solid products are achieved. The German business recognised that in order to successfully economise its workflow of material and ensure that it can effectively handle planned projects throughout the year, it needed to interlink individual production points to create one ultimate automated

manufacturing cell. The concept was good but the challenge remained as to how this could become reality. Starke turned to Homag which has built up a wealth of experience in the field of automation and robotics. It soon became clear that what Starke understood to be a specialist requirement was actually part of Homag’s standard portfolio. Christian Heißler, technology consultant of the Homag Group explains: “By using a robot cell, parts are automatically fed into the manufacturing line in accordance with production requirements. Alternatively the robot cell can also be used for storing workpieces in an intermediate buffer and then feeding them to numerous different

individual processing stations as required.” At Starke, workpieces are effortlessly transferred from its drilling machine and systematically logged within the robot storage cell. Whilst in the storage cell each part remains 100% accessible at any given time, increasing the overall flexibility in the manufacturing process. In addition to this, integrating a robot as the central

driving element also develops a more clear and concise line of production for operators. Each piece that is stored is individually registered and continuously tracked within the system and therefore can be immediately located when required. Panels are then transferred according to the selection of the operator and delivered to the next stage of production. At Starke,

combining existing individual stages of manufacture, the Homag Automation robot sorting cell proved to be the perfect solution for Starke providing it with the key to optimum productivity and efficiency. Simon Brooks, sales and marketing director of Homag UK expands: “A misguided consensus in the market is that automated systems are expensive and only for the bigger manufacturer, however, this is definitely not the case. Smaller businesses can easily benefit from automation. The advantages that automation can bring to a business in terms of added efficiency, cost savings, stock control and safety are potentially huge. “Homag is able to provide expert advice and support for any potential investors that are looking to automate their production facilities. On top of this, Homag can offer flexible finance solutions to enable the investment cost to be spread over a suitable period of time.” For more information on Homag sorting robots or any of the company’s automation machines, call 01332 856424. homag.com

Following installation of an AXYZ 4022 CNC router in February of this year, Wythenshawe, Manchester-based Kids Funtime Beds has increased production by a staggering 50%.

AXYZ router increases production by 50% at bed manufacturer Established in 2013 as a sole trader and subsequently adopting limited status, the company specialises in the manufacture of customised bunk beds that are designed exclusively for children. Available in different designs and formats, the beds combine beautiful patterns, colour themes and additional structural features to harmonise with a child’s sense of adventure and fun with functionality to ensure a high level of safety, both of which requirements the company is said to have worked tirelessly to achieve. The decision to purchase the AXYZ router stemmed from an all too familiar customer experience. Managing director, Tony Smith explains: “Prior to purchasing the AXYZ 4022 machine, we engaged the services of two other manufacturers on the basis of a cheaper price and the promise of reliable service. “After many sleepless nights and an annual cost to the company of around £40,000 caused by machine failure, excessive downtime and a lack of spare parts, we bit the bullet and decided to spend a little more money and invest in a reliable and higher performance machine with a support service to match.” Following a visit to the Joinery and Furniture Exhibition at the NEC, Tony Smith met up with AXYZ International’s technical sales engineer, Chris Perry, who invited him to test one of the AXYZ machines at the company’s main facility in Telford. Tony Smith continues: “The routing/cutting capability demonstrated by the machine was faster and more accurate than anything we had experienced with our already installed machines and the knowledge and experience of the AXYZ International team of engineers and the service we realised they were capable of providing made the decision to purchase a formality.

F&JP_285.indd 56

“My advice to all would-be purchasers of CNC routers is to avoid buying a cheaper machine. As we experienced, it will cost dearly due to excessive downtime and lack of service, a drain on finances and possible damage to customer relations.” “Three months later, with a reliable AXYZ router installed and ready access to spare parts and ongoing technical support, we have managed in the past two months to increase production by 50%. “My advice to all would-be purchasers of CNC routers is to avoid buying a cheaper machine. As we experienced, it will cost dearly due to excessive downtime and lack of service, a drain on finances and possible damage to customer relations.” The AXYZ 4022 router now installed at the Kids Funtime Beds facility is a twin-bed CNC machine incorporating the AXYZ Automatic Tool Change (ATC) facility and special pins that ensure the accuracy of panel placement. It has

a processing area of 6.7 (length) x 1.5m (width) and is used primarily to cut 8 x 4 18mm MDF for the bed panels. The router is supported by VCarve software that is particularly ideal for 2D and 3D profiling work. As with all AXYZ routers, the 4022 machine can be supplied with a host of optional production tool enhancements. These include the AXYZ Auto Zone Management facility that ensures the material being processed is always held securely during the routing/cutting process and the A2MC machine controller with integrated AXYZ Vision System (AVS) for greater accuracy and quality of cut. These are supplemented with the latest helical rack and pinion drive system that incorporates a multiple

gear teeth arrangement. This helps spread the workload more evenly and results in faster throughput times, reduced material wastage, quieter operation and ultimately a longer than normal machine life. In conclusion, Tony Smith adds: “Since installation, the AXYZ router has worked continuously and without any problems for 13 hours a day. There has also been the added benefit of having access to a knowledgeable and helpful AXYZ technical support team that was not provided by previous suppliers. Furthermore, it has allowed us to focus our energy on other areas of the business, not to mention getting a good night’s sleep!” 01952 291600 www.axyz.co.uk

Ian Firth Hardware has been supplying the housing market with door and ironmongery products for over 35 years during which time it has grown and evolved to suit changes in demands and technologies.

Ian Firth installs fourth Centauro ALFA CNC door machine Over the last decade, there has been a shift in the construction methods housebuilders use for doors/frames, which has seen them move from the traditional way of ordering individual components to now buying complete fully machined door sets which are ready to quickly and easily fit on site. Due to an increase in demand for these door kits, Ian Firth has recently invested in two additional Centauro ALFA NC milling machines from JJ Smith to work alongside the two already installed in its Dewsbury factory. The ALFA is an easy to program, quick to set up automatic machine that can be used for the production of doors and door components including the machining of the door linings for hinges/lock keeps, handle holes and key slots, lock slots, three-point locking systems, door closers etc. Thanks to the CNC-controlled router head that works both in the vertical and horizontal, the machine is very versatile and gives repeat machining accuracy. Standard X-axis capacity is 2800mm, while the Y-axis capacity is 150mm with the option to increase this to 600mm.

Two Centauro ALFAs machining internal doors

Programming is via the Power 1000 colour graphic touch screen controller with pre-installed electronic macro templates which makes programming extremely simple and usually operators can be fully trained within one day. Options include a turntable for doors, additional router head for drilling or squaring of corners

for square hinges and table extensions. When it became apparent that the company needed to increase production output, operations manager Nigel Robinson did not hesitate to contact JJ Smith’s Paul Parker who he had originally dealt with when purchasing the first two machines. Nigel comments: “Initially we had started to think along the lines of investing in another large bed, fully-equipped CNC router. However when we looked at what we wanted to actually do on the machine everything pointed to going with another two ALFAs. “The first machines had worked extremely well since day one, the operators were very comfortable operating and programming them, the footprint is relatively small and also the cost compared very favourably against the larger CNC machines we had first considered.” An order was confirmed and both machines were installed and working on schedule in just 10 weeks. The fact that Nigel knew

the order and installation would as usual be conducted in a very professional manner was another reason he had total confidence in placing the business with JJ Smith. The machines supplied were complete with the quick-change ISO30 tool system and also with optional wider table and a horizontal clamping system which allows for two frame- or door-jambs to be machined together, thus maximising production output. Robin Firth, commercial director for Ian Firth adds: “We supply some of the UK’s biggest house builders and since the upturn in the housing market the increased demand for our doors/door kits has risen by around 50%. “As a result we have made some significant investments in new machinery and personnel to make sure we can keep pace with demand and provide our customers with the service they have come to expect from Ian Firth.” 0151 548 9000 sales@jjsmith.co.uk jjsmith.co.uk

Imagine if you started a company and managed to plan your resources to perfection. Your vision was realised and the risks associated with a business start-up evaporated as your business thrived. Your marketing and customer service proved your belief that the business model was indeed correct and customers needed your products and services. Could it be too good?

Increased efficiency for Sheffield Kitchen Outlet Stuart Hattersley, managing director of Sheffield Kitchen Outlet, recalls those early days. “We invested in three panel saws which were operated by five men. We also had a secondhand edgebander, which was a bit slow but did a job. At first it was ideal, but orders ramped up so fast that in the end we couldn’t cope with demand. “We received a marketing email from Biesse and the timing couldn’t have been better. We visited their Tech Centre in Daventry for discussions about production methodology and volumes, which were backed up with machine demonstrations.

“The star of the show is definitely the Selco SK4 beamsaw with twin pusher. Rather than having the three panel saws with five men, we now have one beamsaw with one man and a massive increase in output.”

F&JP_285.indd 59

“We’d always gone down the cut, edge and drill route and Biesse guided us through this process, introducing us to new machinery which included a Selco beamsaw with twin pusher, Akron edgebander and a Skipper V31 point-to-point drilling machine for the gables.” Technical director, Dan Hattersley, comments: “The star of the show is definitely the Selco SK4 beamsaw

with twin pusher. Rather than having the three panel saws with five men, we now have one beamsaw with one man and a massive increase in output. We’re now processing 50 sheets per day.” “Which is great,” continues Stuart, “but for us the most amazing thing is that we’re saving £300 per day on waste through more efficient use of material with Biesse’s Optiplanning

software.” The Akron 1300 edgebander and Skipper V31 were sound investments, which helped to keep pace with the output from the beamsaw and provide an accurate and consistent quality across the manufacturing range. “One of the other deciding factors in our decision-making process was Total Care, Biesse’s five-year warranty and service package,” continues Dan, “it underpins the confidence in the quality of the machines.” “Without doubt, Biesse’s solution has made us much more efficient and not only helped us to cope with the demand for kitchens, but also helped us to move into the bedroom market.” Machines: • Selco SK4 4300 x 4400 beamsaw with twin pusher • Akron 1300 edgebander • Skipper V31 point-to-point drilling machine • K60 Active Edge – manual edgebander for curved edges • K60 Active Trim – manual edge trimmer for curved edges biesse.com

Daltons Wadkin install Altendorf WA80TE panel saw at Derby composite engineering company

EPM Technology invests in Altendorf Derby-based EPM Technology is an engineering company operating with a wide range of thermo composite materials providing performance-enhancing solutions to a customer base which incorporates among others F1 motor sport, Team GB at the Olympics, Channel 5’s The Gadget Show and a wide portfolio of users within the aerospace industry. The company was established in 1996 by Graham Mulholland and has grown rapidly to become one of the most advanced and respected composite engineering businesses in Europe. Bearing in mind the company’s need for ultimate accuracy and performance within

its manufacturing processes there was really only one name in the frame when it came to a requirement for a new panel cutting saw and that was Altendorf. Altendorf manufactures arguably the finest sliding table panel saws in the world and one of its principal UK distributors is Daltons Wadkin based in Nottingham. Accordingly, Gavin Henderson at EPM approached the distributor stressing the need for a high-precision and high-quality tool and after discussions with Kyle Brown in the Daltons Wadkin sales department, the model WA80TE machine was chosen incorporating 2250mm sliding table and 1300mm rip fence capacity

together with powerful 7.5HP electrics and multisaw speeds. The machine was subsequently delivered, installed and commissioned by Daltons Wadkin engineers, overseen by Kyle, and is currently providing a significant boost to EPM’s production capacity. Kyle says: “It was good to be able to provide a top-quality, high-precision machine to a local engineering company. I am sure the machine will prove to be a great investment for years to come.” 0115 986 5201 sales@daltonswadkin.com daltonswadkin.com

With colour, style and a premium finish becoming increasingly important to discerning homeowners, Mighton Products says that its Exact colour matching service gives joiners and paint sprayers the capacity to respond to that demand thanks to its ability to match any hue of paint both promptly, and for an affordable price.

Exact colour matching service from Mighton Products

Through partnering with paint specialist Anker Stuy, Mighton technicians now have unlimited access to a library of thousands of colour recipes, enabling them to mix the product in-house and offer next day delivery on any order made before 4pm. In addition, the company makes regular use of Anker Stuy’s state-of-the-art laboratory where previously unmatched colours can be identified from a sample or paint code quickly and accurately. Mighton Product’s managing director, Mark Fortune, says: “Our Exact colour mixing and

F&JP_285.indd 62

matching service is proving popular with joiners. Coming from the Mighton Ultra range, all coatings consistently offer quality and high performance in colours that would normally only be available in other systems – like emulsions.” He continues: “Significant investment in the latest computer-controlled technology enables us to offer an accurate match to most existing paint systems, including ‘posh paints’. “Customers can give us a colour reference to work to or alternatively send us a sample of the paint they are looking to match. In most cases we will have the colour recipe in our existing

library, if not we can have it matched that same day at our partner’s sophisticated laboratory in the Netherlands,” he adds. The experienced laboratory uses high-tech equipment to create new recipes which are then uploaded to the Mighton library back in the UK via the internet. Thanks to the speed and efficiency of the whole process, in most cases Mighton is able to offer next-working-day delivery for new colours too. 01223 902455 sales@mighton.co.uk mightonproducts.com

Investment continues at Whitehill Whitehill Spindle Tools is the only UK manufacturer of dedicated window tooling solutions. The business has seen a dramatic change in the woodwork manufacturing processes over the last 15 years, especially for small- and medium-sized joinery workshops. This has been driven by changes in machinery design, availability and price. The advances in software has increased the capabilities and ease of use of machinery and the changes in tooling design allow dedicated window and door systems to become widely available to all levels within the industry. Wooden window and door technical design has been radically improved, partly as a result of changes in legislation and partly as a response to the dramatic loss of market share to uPVC. As a result, Whitehill has made vital investments in product design in order to reverse this trend. This has resulted in tremendous growth yearon-year for at least the last decade and shows no sign of slowing down. These enormous advances mean that all UK and worldwide customers are now able to offer a fully finished quality controlled product, backed by certificates of performance criteria. Whitehill produces dedicated window and door tooling, which provides the simplest and most cost-effective production for its customers. Whether

it’s used on older single purpose machines, newer digital/CNC versions, or multi-function machining centres, Whitehill’s replacement carbide tip toolsets have set the benchmark for finish, quality and speed of production. With virtually no set-up times, no marking out and perfect repeatability, this allows windows to be made to order with no minimum batch size and often by semi-skilled staff. This permits small- and medium-sized joinery workshops the

capabilities that were only ever available to large manufacturers a decade or so ago. Whitehill’s significant investments in its factory in Luton along with its technical experience and advice, ensures that this unique business remains as the UK’s leading tooling manufacturer. 01582 736881 sales@whitehill-tools.com whitehill-tools.com

Leicestershire based ECF Ltd is a family owned business that has been trading for more than 37 years. With 140 employees based in its 100,000 sq. ft. facility, the company turnover is in excess of £21m and growing.

Homag supplies complete production cell for ECF Ltd “Our original factory, known as Plant 1, was running at full capacity,” explains Craig Cooper, production and development manager at ECF Ltd. He continues: “the success of our in-house manufactured products such as the Gaddesby Kitchens, Volante Bedrooms and Greyhouse Bathrooms meant we had to add capacity to the manufacturing facility. “With the faster than expected growth rate of our kitchen, bedroom and bathroom ranges, we took the decision to invest in another state-of-the-art manufacturing plant (Plant 2). This new facility was to be dedicated to the manufacture of our assembled furniture ranges. It had to be as flexible as possible to enable us to carry more stock decors and to broaden our Gaddesby Kitchens offer. “I had a good understanding of the production line that would be required and, after various meetings with Simon Brooks and personnel from Homag Germany, we finalised

One of ECF’s two Homag Vantage 100 CNCs complete with automatic labelling

the machinery specification list. The heart of the production cell is an automated storage and retrieval system coupled with two CNC nesting machines, complete with automatic labelling. “This equipment performs the tasks of board storage, panel sizing, part labelling, routing and

vertical drilling. All the horizontal drilling, gluing and dowel insertion is handled by an ABD 260 drilling and dowelling machine. For the edgebanding, we specified two Homag 2492 machines, both equipped with a PUR gluing facility and one which has airTec for invisible joints. Completing the new

equipment in the cell is the MDE 120 carcass press with cabinet erector and rotation table for the cabinet assembly. “We also relocated an existing Homag BHX 055 vertical CNC from Plant 1 to Plant 2 to process one-off panel boring and special door/ drawer drilling.”

Making the right choice “Naturally, for an investment of this size we talked to a number of other suppliers, but at the end of the day we felt comfortable with the relationship we have built up with Homag over the last 12 years or so. Most of our machinery in Plant 1 comes from Homag so we have considerable knowledge and understanding of the equipment and software. “To change to another machine supplier would have added unnecessary risk to our investment in terms of machine reliability, sales support and service. With Homag, on the other hand, we know exactly what we are going to get. Our working relationship with Homag’s sales and marketing director, Simon Brooks, is excellent; it is so important to have complete trust both in the hardware and the company you are buying from when investing large sums of money into a project such as this. “It wasn’t, however, a done deal. It was imperative for me to see all the equipment in action either in real world factories or trade shows. I would never buy machines of this type ‘off plan’. I need to see them working, I need to interact with them and ask questions in order to fully understand their benefits - as well as their limitations. Then, and only then, can I be confident in asking for the funding from our board of directors.” Flexibility with automation “There were a number of key benefits the new production cell had to deliver, two of the most important of which were flexibility and a more automated approach to our just-in-time manufacturing ethos. The TLF 211 storage and retrieval system is fundamental to delivering these goals. “Manual materials handling has been reduced considerably. Our daily delivery of MFC is forked straight into the loading area of the TLF 211. The board is automatically stored and then, as required, it is retrieved, pre-sorted, labelled, cut and drilled before anyone even touches it. “Not only that, but all of the pre-sorting can be carried out during the evening with lightsout operation, ready for the next day’s production run. The front end processes of sorting, loading, labelling, sizing, drilling and routing are all completed with just the one

operator on the outfeed of the two CNCs. With less sophisticated machinery, you would need at least three operators to carry out those processes in the volumes we require.” Reliable, fast production with premium quality “This manufacturing cell has enabled us to increase capacity with improved product quality. What’s more it is reliable. The ABD 260 is a case in point. It’s a quick, no-nonsense machine which does its job efficiently and accurately. All three processes of horizontal drilling, glue injection and dowel insertion are carried out in one pass – and its CNC control suits our batch-size-one manufacturing technique perfectly. “We have always been fans of PUR glue because of its excellent

water resistant nature and the cleaner glue line you get with PUR. Old fashioned EVA glue just isn’t good enough for our products which is why we specified both edge banders to come with a PUR gluing system. “It was also important we had a ‘zero-joint’ capability for those highly visible parts which is why we specified airTec on one of the edgebanders. The airTech is only used for the cabinet fascias and will be used for future products which require a seamless transition from panel to edge. “Overall, the cell has delivered huge time savings and increased efficiencies whilst giving us far more flexibility. It has allowed us to better service the builder and developer market as well as our highly valued existing customers. The small accuracy tolerance of the Homag

CNCs enables us to create superb quality cabinets – worthy of our Gaddesby, Greyhouse and Volante brands. “The cell’s performance has been amazing. We planned for a three year return on investment, but with things going the way they are, it looks like being as quick as two years. With a complex set up like this, teething problems are almost inevitable and so these are always factored into the first six months of production planning. We are, however, ready to ramp-up to full production after just three months,” concludes a delighted Craig Cooper. Over the last 35 years, progression and development of these services has allowed the Leeds business to enter the arena as one of the big boys.

No standing still at Lawcris! Lawcris operates out of four units, totaling 200,000ft2. Manufacturing is split over two of these sites; the first containing facilities for cut, edged and machined components – favourably named Creative CNC – and the second housing the company’s bonding facilities. Over the last couple of years, close to £1m has been invested into these services, responding to customer demand by upgrading its equipment, machinery and infrastructure. Lawcris has gained a remarkable reputation as one of the most successful independent panel product companies, offering melamine boards, laminates, worktops, acrylics, veneers, solid surfaces, raw boards and much more to the UK market. Having this stock in house has allowed Lawcris’ manufacturing services to run far more effectively with no delays in getting the boards in the first place. However, providing a speedy service is only part of the story – achieving optimum efficiency is not about individual components. Overall, success has come from how its services work together to deliver exactly what the customer needs. Bonded Boards Lawcris is a key supplier of bespoke laminated products and has the capacity to output large quantities of bonded sheets, approximately 60,000 a year. The success of this service is not reliant solely on the high-quality pressing, it is so much more than that. Lawcris excels with achieving the seamless first-class experience from beginning to finish. Bringing together the ease of choosing a laminate and core board on Lawcris’ award winning website, to rapid picking of the chosen products from a warehouse holding over £4m of stock, to the selection in press sizes; 8 x 4ft (2440 x 1220mm), 10 x 4ft (3050 x 1220mm), 10 x 5ft

need, it is clear that when it comes to laminate fabrication, Lawcris offers an unrivalled service that is hard to match. Creative CNC Lawcris has one of the most comprehensive range of decorative boards in the UK with over 1000 designs including colours, woodgrains, patterns and metals. Further to this, Lawcris stock over 3000 combinations of these designs with different sizes, finishes, textures, cores and further choices depending on whether there is a requirement for moisture-resistant or fire-resistant standards. It only makes sense that they complement this impressive range of stocked materials with a cut, edge and machined service – Creative CNC, which all follows on nicely from the bonded boards department. 35 years’ experience has built an impressive database of customers including shop fitters, exhibition, joinery, kitchen and furniture manufacturers. A constant program of investment ensures Creative CNC offers the highest quality of service with an impressive fitfor-purpose facility and the latest technology with an epic portfolio of up to date machinery including beams saws, edge slitting and edge banding machinery, CNC’s, panel saws and spindle moulders. The most recent investment has pushed the accuracy and speed of the CNC department to new realms, halving the production time and getting projects out much sooner to their customers. Stuart Hall, general manager of Creative CNC, says: “New equipment and facilities have significantly improved the speed of our manufacturing process. When producing components, efficiency is everything. Maximising the yield from each board and minimising waste is massively important, that’s something that everyone at Lawcris understands.

The recently installed beam saws ensure a consistent accuracy

“Boards as thin as 6mm can be loaded automatically from the rear of the machine and the programmed turning device for headcuts reduces panel handling and preparation time for cutting. The addition of a labelling machine, which is hugely popular with our customers, means every component we supply can be labelled, if required.” “We see ourselves as Another recent addition an extra arm to those is the company’s new businesses and can support edgeband slitting machine, which allows them to cut production Lawcris to keep up with times for those who need the increased volume of bonded boards or custom tailored widths, a popular made, sized, drilled and demand the company is currently seeing in the edged components” market. Stuart goes on to “Speed and automation are say: “The new slitter performs definitely the key words associated effortlessly with fast slitting speeds with our high-tech beam saws. The and easily adapts to meet bespoke saw blade projection of 150mm widths of up to 100mm. This has enables us to cut up to seven doubled our edging portfolio to sheets of 18mm MDF at once with over 1000 items, allowing us to the saw carriage speed of up to add a number of new ABS options 130m/ min, producing super quick in widths 22mm, 23mm, 28mm, cutting times. 29mm, 33mm, 45mm and 54mm. “With the recent purchase of two HPL 500 Holzma beam saws, we have enhanced the quality of cut and our consistent saw capabilities allows us to effectively offer even better service, especially in a market that expects reliable excellence, best prices and delivery yesterday!

Labels are produced for all components

All these additional widths can be bought in the popular 75m rolls.” Ian Matthews, Lawcris director says: “We understand that we are in a great position. For a lot of businesses, purchasing new machinery is a large financial decision. There are so many things to consider, such as how much the new machine will be used, running costs, what extra output and capacity it will create. Sometimes it simply isn’t viable.

“This is where we can help businesses effectively outsource their projects with repeatable highquality panel based components. Our purchasing power within the panel products industry and efficiency in our machinery allows us to create very competitive quotes for the same work some businesses might do in house. “Using older machinery may not be as proficient, fast or cost effective and could potentially damage relationships with their own customers. We see ourselves as an extra arm to those businesses and can support them to cut production times for those who need bonded boards or custom made, sized, drilled and edged components. Lawcris’ vast success has been achieved through their services faultlessly working together to deliver exactly what the customer needs. With everything under one roof and access to its huge product portfolio clearly displayed on the company’s user-friendly website, Lawcris has set the bar in terms of reliability, speed, cost effectiveness and first-class quality. lawcris.co.uk

The Swift Group is the UK’s largest manufacturer of touring caravans, motorhomes and holiday homes. The group has a turnover in excess of £200m and in 2014 celebrated its 50th anniversary. It has gone from strength to strength in recent years with the workforce growing to over 1080 employees.

The Swift Group puts its faith in Homag for its CNC solution The recent rise in sales had put pressure on the manufacturing side of the business to keep up with demand. To alleviate the situation, the directors made the strategic decision to invest in the latest CNC machinery which would increase the capacity and improve efficiency at the Cottingham site. “We looked at a number of options in the market, but settled on Homag,” explains CNC production manager at Swift, Dave Smith. He continues: “The group already had edgebanders and BHX 050 drilling centres from Homag and the excellent level of support we have had from them in the past certainly helped in the decision process. “Our maintenance department, in particular, is pro Homag. It prefers dealing with Homag partly because of the level of aftersales service we get from them. We know that if we call with an issue they will come back to us with a solution quickly. “In addition, the machines have self-diagnostic systems, so Homag engineers can log in and sort out issues remotely. Also, from the maintenance side, the manuals and electrical diagrams are of a very high standard and make it much easier for our own maintenance people to service the machines when necessary.” Live demonstration sealed the deal “John Shepherd, our Homag area sales manager, invited us to Castle Donington for an in-depth demonstration of the Homag Vantage 100 machine. For this, we were able to take along materials we work with and some of our

programs and run them through the Vantage 100 to see how it coped. “The results were really impressive. The machine uses the powerTouch operating system which is very intuitive and easy to use. Seeing the machine in action sealed the deal. It was clear that this was the machine that would give us the increase in capacity we were looking for whilst maintaining the high quality and reliability that we demand. “Our manufacturing processes include a high number of drill cycles and the old CNC machines we used had no drill blocks which led to a lot of time-consuming tool changes. The configuration of the Vantage 100 includes a drill block with 12 positions, so the need for tool changes is minimised, making our production so much more efficient.” A compact, clean solution “Another benefit of the Homag Vantage 100 is its small footprint. We do not have a lot of spare space in the factory and we needed to install two Vantage 100s, so the compact size of the machine is very important to us. “We also like its self-cleaning aspect. Previously, the old machines needed frequent cleaning; we had to clear away the dust and then vacuum the machines down. “The new Vantage 100 has a cleaning cycle which automatically kicks in once the components have been machined and the table is clear. All the débris is taken away by a built-in waste and vacuum system underneath the table. So, supported by the main

“These new machines from Homag have made a huge difference to the efficiency of our operation because they’ve enabled us to reduce cycle times. As a consequence, we no longer have to put CNC work out and despite running much quicker, the quality has remained high.”

dust extraction system, there is virtually no dust left to gather on the equipment and surrounding areas. Compared to our old machines, this feature saves us a significant amount of non-productive time. “These new machines from Homag have made a huge difference to the efficiency of our operation because they’ve enabled us to reduce cycle times. As a consequence, we no longer have to put CNC work out and despite running much quicker, the quality has remained high. We’re delighted with our investment and would recommend Homag to anyone seriously wanting to improve their processes,” concludes Dave Smith. A powerful and versatile CNC The Homag Vantage 100 nesting machine offers a wide selection of

router heads, tool changers and drill block configurations to enable individual customers to specify their ideal machines. The Vantage range can be supplied as stand-alone models or throughfeed systems with automatic material handling and part identification. They can even be integrated into Homag’s increasingly popular board storage and retrieval systems. This enables material to be called from stock on demand and fed directly onto the machine table without any operator intervention – perfect for ‘make to order’ production. According to the Health and Safety Executive, in 2015 there were 635 new Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) related claims compared to 610 and 580 in 2014 and 2013 respectively. This year-on-year increase shows that HAVS has become an occupational health hazard that needs to be taken seriously as it can cause lasting issues to a person’s health.

Reducing the risk of HAVS injury Abrasive specialist Mirka is taking this issue seriously with its continued investment in tools designed to address this challenge. The R&D department at its HQ in Jeppo, Finland is continuously looking at ways to reduce the risk of HAVS injury when using tools, from the way they are designed to technology that can provide users with insights into what effect a tool is having when it is in use. As a business, Mirka has been at the cutting edge of tooling for the furniture industry for the past decade, and one of the latest tools to come off the production line at its plant in Finland is the new Mirka DEROS sander. This tool has an integrated vibration sensor and is equipped with Bluetooth low-energy technology that can be connected to a mobile device with the new myMirka app – available to download free of charge through both the Apple Store and Google Play. The technology has been developed to safeguard users from HAVS which affects the blood vessels, nerves, muscles and joints of the hand, wrist and arm. This type of injury is becoming a bigger issue for workers as it is a condition they cannot see or are only aware of

F&JP_285.indd 74

When it comes to performance, the DEROS has been designed to deliver a rapid, efficient, consistently powerful performance comparable to a conventional 500W electric machine, even under heavy load. its impact when it is potentially too late. The reasons vary: each worker may have different tolerances for the amount of vibrations they can handle or they may not realise there’s a problem until they try a different tool or do not use their own for a while. To combat this issue and protect workers, the myMirka app indicates vibration levels on a colour graded scale when it is connected to the tool, and advises on how to lower the vibration if required. Additionally, the speed can be visualised in a separate graph. To add to this, an in-app purchase will enable users to track the daily vibration in relation to European standards. The DEROS tips the scales at one kilogram, which is half the weight compared to similar competitor tools on the market, and when you combine this with its long body that encompasses an ergonomic grip, it reduces arm fatigue when using it for a sustained period of time. Also, its low profile design

ensures the hand is close to the surface, delivering good control over the sanding process, which is one of the main benefits users in the industry look out for. When it comes to performance, the DEROS has been designed to deliver a rapid, efficient, consistently powerful performance comparable to a conventional 500W electric machine, even under heavy load. It also is economical to use, reducing energy costs. This lowmaintenance, extremely reliable sander has a long lifespan and features a ‘closed construction’ preventing dust from entering the motor, avoiding typical wear and tear damage experienced by electric machines. For added peace of mind, Mirka offers a two-year warranty as standard, with an additional year given subject to the tool being registered within 30 days of purchase on the Mirka website. The DEROS’ innovative features also include a soft start function,

a built-in electronic motor brake that stops the free running of the machine when not in use on the surface, and a smooth, very easy to operate start stop paddle. In addition, the backing pad brake acts like a seal minimising air leakage between the pad and the shroud, making dust extraction more efficient. This leads to a marked reduction in the amount of dust produced so the shop floor is a cleaner environment. This is particularly important as some wood dusts are now known to be a health hazard making it vital to take the dust out of the workshop. Mirka DEROS is available in several options: • Mirka DEROS 5650CV in a case includes both 125mm & 150mm backing pads. • Mirka DEROS 650CV in a box includes a 150mm backing pad. • Mirka DEROS 550CV in a box includes a 125mm backing pad. 01908 866100 mirka.co.uk

Edgebanding has changed beyond recognition in recent years, mainly down to the development of adhesives and the higher expectations of end users. The well-specified Fravol machines, through Ney, offer flexible high performance options.

Edging ahead with Fravol Not only with traditional hot melt application but also with the increasing demand for PU glues and the emergence of seamless solutions, the pressure has been put on machinery manufacturers to provide flexible solutions to suit furniture makers with variable needs. Fravol is at the forefront of this revolution and supplies machines to apply all three glue types with changeover times down to less than five minutes. Smart range The Smart range of machines offers a wide range of options and permutations and has quick-release glue pots that can be swapped in minutes, changing from hot melt to PU application with ease. With the addition of a changeover table, the next glue pot can be pre-heated and ready to run with no downtime for the pot to warm up. With the addition of the Fusion edging option, the machine can apply seamless edging with a heatup time of around five minutes; users can produce cabinet doors to the highest standards with ease. The machines are controlled from a large touch screen which can include control of the fine adjustment of finishing stations, allowing the machine to be completely controlled without the need to open the hoods. With a feed speed of up to 20m per minute, a maximum panel thickness up to 60mm and the ability to apply solid timber lippings up to 8mm thick, the Smart range of machines is ideally suited to furniture manufacturers with varying needs or shopfitting companies that require complete flexibility.

Fravol’s Smart edgebander

Fravol’s Rapid edgebander

Rapid range For companies with higher production demands, two-shift working or the need to produce solid lipped panels such as fire doors, then the Rapid range of machines provides the ideal solution. With the ability to change over between all glue types in the same way as the Smart range, the Rapid offers increased solid wood capacity with 16mm lippings as standard and even more if required.

The end trim saws and top and bottom trimming units are heavier duty than the Rapid range with options to increase the power for customers who need to process thick lippings on a continuous basis. With all the other options of working units available including pre-milling corner rounding, flat and radius scraping, total flexibility comes as standard. Again control is from a touch screen and as with the Rapid range of machines a program library can be stored meaning changeover times are minimised and accuracy assured.

Both machine ranges can be specified to suit a customer’s specific requirements in terms of working units, glue types, lipping capacity etc. It’s even an option to choose the feed direction of the machine. There are many unique features available on the Fravol machines giving this high-quality manufacturer a unique place in the market and able to fulfil the needs of the manufacturer with the most demanding of requirements. 024 7630 8100 ney.co.uk

The Weybourne Day Unit, part of the NHS Norfolk & Norwich University Hospitals Trust, provides a nurse-led oncology and haematology service.

Interior Film from David Clouting proves a success in demanding NHS environment Specially-trained chemotherapy nurses and specialists administer outpatient chemotherapy regimens, supported by consultants and specially-trained doctors. The unit was an expansion of existing services provided by the hospital to create a new 22-bed facility. The inspiration for the artwork on the interior walls of the unit was the flora and fauna of the surrounding area of Weybourne, with research carried out so the right plants and leaf patterns could be used by the artist Vicki Johnson, creative

Emma Jarvis, environmental arts manager responsible for the project, says: “Our decision to use a film to cover the walls and as a base for the artwork was determined by a number of factors including; infection control, cleaning and fire safety.” Emma continues: “We trialled a range of different films printing Vicki’s designs directly onto the film and then tested it with actichlor which is a hospital bleach used throughout our hospital. “We selected LG Hausys Interior Film from David Clouting because

it not only passed the bleach test but the quality of the white colour of the film was also significantly better than the others we tested. “It has a slightly softer tone and worked best with the building finishes within the unit. “Installation was also a key factor together with the type of glue on the film itself. We needed to ensure that the film would not fall off the wall in any way and also peel off and replace with ease when required.

“The air channels and the slightly thicker make of Interior Film helped significantly in ensuring first time placement and installation with no repositioning required.” Available in a range of over 400 designs and finishes, Interior Film is available to view on the BIMSTORE website and is also CE and IMO certified so can be specified with confidence across a wide range of applications. davidclouting.co.uk

REHAU has been awarded for its new Rauvisio crystal mirror at the biennial Interzum Awards: Intelligent Material and Design.

REHAU shines at Interzum 2017 The awards, which take place every two years, see a panel of international industry experts award the best designs in the international supplier industry for the furniture and interior decorating sectors. There are participants from 28 nations who enter into the prestigious awards and this year saw REHAU’s entry, the Rauvisio crystal mirror, into the High Quality Product category rewarded with success. This innovative polymer mirror received the special distinction and beat this year’s competition in the materials and surfaces category to receive the internationally-coveted quality seal.

Rauvisio crystal mirror Rauvisio crystal mirror was created by an in-house design team at Rehau Germany, led by Thorsten Engelbrecht, Matthias Haasler, Hans Peter Mehnert, Rene De Jong and Annett Schulz, who stated of the product: “What makes this solution so unique is the flexibility it offers to the fabricator and installers, thus opening up a whole new world of opportunities.” Unlike conventional mirrors made with real glass, this alternative solution is made from polymer and therefore offers a flexible alternative. Matthias Haasler, head of surface product management and manager at the REHAU stand Interzum 2017, explained more about the product.

The award-winning Rauvisio crystal mirror from REHAU

“Rauvisio crystal mirror can be processed in a variety of different ways thanks to its polymer properties,” he said. “The reflective surface material is not only lighter and more durable than real glass, it can also be cut to size, is bendable and can be made into virtually any shape. And what’s more is that unlike conventional mirrors, our crystal mirror doesn’t mist up.” This makes it the ideal solution for bathroom installations. This material lends itself perfectly to bespoke and large-scale projects. Wall mirrors, reflective surfaces and much more can be created, using standard woodworking tools. And the advantages don’t stop there. Once installed maintenance promises to be effortless as this polymer mirror product can be cleaned with ease thanks to a dirt-resistant coating. The award-winning crystal mirror was not the only preview from REHAU visitors were able to admire at this year’s event. The polymer glass laminate Rauvisio crystal was represented with two new colours, whilst the high-gloss acrylic laminate Rauvisio brilliant not only introduced new colours to the collection, but also a new and highly scratch-resistant version of the already-permanently UV stable material. Of course no surface is complete without the perfect edge to match. “Our high-gloss material offers outstanding colour stability and depth,” Mr Haasler added. “And we have the ideal edgeband for every requirement.” With this promise, REHAU has become a leading edgeband supplier in the market, looking back at 40 years of expertise and competence in décor and design for everything associated with the edgeband, and having set numerous milestones in the history of the product. With the Raukantex edgeband range, also present at Interzum 2017, REHAU covers all requirements in terms of design, function and processing, and continues to constantly develop these further.

“The reflective surface material is not only lighter and more durable than real glass, it can also be cut to size, is bendable and can be made into virtually any shape. And what’s more is that unlike conventional mirrors, our crystal mirror doesn’t mist up.”

Not only does REHAU offer matching edgeband to its own surface materials in a variety of finishes, but with over 20,000 matches, it covers the world-leading board and laminate collections. “Our success is based on decades of knowhow in the edgeband segment,” emphasises Mr Haasler. “Whatever requirements our customers have, we are sure to find the ideal solution. As a reliable partner to the furniture industry, we have proven this time and again. Our experience in the implementation of decorative designs makes it possible to achieve a broad spectrum, from the smallest colour nuances to natural wood or stone looks.” Mr Haasler summarised the event: “Once again Interzum didn’t disappoint. The world’s leading trade fair for the supplier industry in Cologne showed itself on top form this year, breaking records with over 69,000 visitors from over 152 countries. “Interzum had a fantastic positive vibe this year, which came across on our stand, a successful event for us, showcasing some truly revolutionary products. The Hornschuch Concept Car Unveiled at the recent Interzum fair, The Pioneer is the first completely independent concept car of Hornschuch. In the interior of the Hornschuch Concept Car, The Pioneer, extensive surfaces from the entire Hornschuch Group are used. This begins with the instrument panel, which is covered at the top with a new TPO artificial leather material. This is adjoined by the skai Diamond with its particularly highquality feel. In combination with the colour copper rose from the air bumpers, it shapes the dashboard that is also decorated with striking seams. The same materiality and coloration is used on the door panels. This colour concept has the effect of a horizon in the vehicle interior. As a result, the The Pioneer appears to be larger inside than it actually is. Beneath the instrument panel, in the central part of the tower and on the floor, an expressive grey wood décor is used. In the first two applications it is digitally printed

artificial leather, while on the floor the TPO material skai Porto from the Hornschuch TranPOrter Collection is used. The business character of The Pioneer is most clearly expressed on the seats. These are practically dressed, meaning that they appear in the modern business style, wearing a suit, shirt and tie. The most striking feature is the tie. This runs over the headrest and the entire backrest of the front seats, but also decorates the two seats in the back. The tie consists of the speciallydeveloped material skai Tex-Tie, which is enhanced by a fine textile texture. The colour combination here is also copper rose. The shirt – the white part of the head rest and back – is made of super-soft, vegan PU material with a delicate leather grain, with the color here being snow white. The middle of the rear seat is also decorated by an oversized tie made of skai Check-Brush, with a fine square cut in the colour anthracite, which seems to ‘fall from the sky’.

On the back seat, the snow-white runs into the grey shade of the seat surface. The suit, which stretches over the backs of the front and rear seats, as well as the sides of the seat surface, consists of the same PU material with a fine textile pattern, but in the colour night black. The seat surfaces and lower side sections of the backs consist of the new breathable material laif VyP,

an innovative hybrid material made of vinyl and polyurethane, that is permeable to air and water vapour and makes sitting more comfortable than ever before. The material in elegant grey stands out with its value-adding diamond stitching. This is based on raised embossing, which perfectly mimics the stitching. The laif VyP tie material was also used for the arm rests. hornschuch.com

Independent panel distributor, Lawcris, is the exclusive stockist of the Studio Collection from the Spanish manufacturing company, Finsa. The Studio Collection is inspired by music, nature and the art of wood.

Studio Collection pays homage to iconic music genres The Studio Collection provides a launching pad of inspiration for designers. It has proven particularly popular amongst furniture manufacturers and specifiers for its authentic wood effect and striking décors. The collection aims to invoke three iconic musical genres: Blues, Tango and Rock & Roll. These high-performance melamine panels provide designers with a realistic and ideal alternative to real wood or veneer. Blues music is widely appreciated for its deep textures of sound, and it was this textural complexity which inspired the Blues Collection. Offering the deepest grains in the Studio Collection, Blues imitates the woodgrain of oak. Emulating a lacquered, open-pore surface, the finish is elegant and silky to touch, whilst maintaining the authenticity of a deep woodgrain. Originating in the slums and bars of 19th century Buenos Aires, Tango music evokes love, nostalgia and melancholy within its powerful rhythm. Expressive and smooth, this passionate music provoked the Tango range of the Studio

F&JP_285.indd 86

Collection. With a lighter, embossed texture, the Tango surfaces provide the distinctive flair of their musical counterpart, available in four inspiring ash décors. Rock & Roll emerged in the USA in the early 1950s, influencing attitudes and lifestyles and inspiring a generation. Its desire for rule-breaking was the theme for Lawcris’s third offering, the Rock & Roll range. Combining characteristic features of wood, stone and textiles, Rock & Roll uses a deep, textured surface to create an authentic and stylish finish that still belies its rebellious rhythmic roots. Not only stylistically impressive, the Studio Collection also features antibacterial surface technology. Designed to inhibit the growth and

development of bacteria on its surface, this innovation makes the collection ideally suited for use in hygienic areas such as kitchens, bathrooms, laboratories and children’s furniture. Certified by Industrial Microbiological Surfaces, the Studio Collection is the optimal choice for applications where hygiene is essential. The Studio Collection is available exclusively from nationwide distributor, Lawcris. All boards are PEFC-certified and come in a 2850 x 2100 x 18mm size with matching edging available for all décors. Samples and technical literature are also available from Lawcris. 0151 651 2400 uk@finsa.com finsa.com

With 36 new colours and décor designs, Renolit has really put its motto of Making Ideas Grow into practice for its 2017 design introductions.

New ideas for a realistic effect In terms of print designs, the trend is still heading squarely in the direction of more realistic effects – which means further optimisation of patterns and textures. Oak remains a favourite for achieving the country house look, and wonderful printed designs are now complemented by advancing tactile surface finishes as embossing techniques are perfected. Synchronised embossing and printing Wood décors should appear as natural as possible. The latest development in this sector is Renolit’s Emboss In Register (EIR). With EIR designs, the company has achieved a new level of perfection by developing this process that allows the embossed structure to exactly match

the printed image. Renolit offers two designs combined with the authentic feel of EIR – the planked Gladstone Oak, which has a matching product from Egger, and the new highly elaborate ENDgrain décor that reflects the cross-section of freshly cut oak tree trunk and which is offered in a number of different shades. Versatile oak Three new oak décors illustrate the stylistic diversity that Renolit has brought to its range. Characterised by years of weathering, the Grandson Oak décor is notched and cracked. Available in the colour combinations of White Grey and Natural, it radiates charismatic yet elegant style.

Kronberg also has a vintage feel. This planked oak was created with old railway sleepers as its inspiration. Years of sitting in the sun has caused the wood to become dried out, discoloured and cracked. Kronberg is available in Beige and Grey, and will lend some rustic charm to the living room, bedroom, kitchen or bathroom. The Kendal Oak décor, on the other hand, takes on a more elegant form. In the Natural Kendal Oak version with its brown tones, bud and branch stumps emphasise the natural evolution of timber. In the Oiled Kendal Oak, a gently contoured grain and slight red cast lend the elegant feel of oiled wood. 01670 718222 renolit.com

The increasing demand for coatings that are certified and tested to recognised fire standards has ensured that Hesse Lignal developed its PU Multicoat lacquer to meet this requirement. . .

Hesse offers a coat for all weathers The DE 4259x (gloss level) is a twocomponent PU lacquer with an acrylic resin base that boasts a three-day pot life. This multicoat lacquer meets the EC-type examination certificate IMO-certification, flame-retardant coating agent for seagoing vessels, which puts it at the forefront of marine coatings. In addition, the DE 4259x (gloss level) series was tested for flame retardancy by the CSTB testing institute, and meets the French M1 classification as well as the test certificate for flame retardance according to DIN 4102 B1. In the UK market the industry increasingly demands this Class B1 standard which the Hesse PU meets. This high spec has not meant any compromise on finish – the lacquer is resilient, light fast and formulated with additional light protection. It is a coating lacquer for priming and top coating that achieves impressive results and is universally applicable. The product can also be used on bleached wood and boasts high flow and levelling characteristics.

F&JP_285.indd 90

The stringent testing criteria means the Hesse PU Multicoat is ideal for high-stress environments such as restaurants, kitchens, bathrooms or any area demanding the highest levels of both chemical and mechanical resistance. It can also be pigmented to suit almost all colour tones and a wide range of gloss levels. As to be expected from Hesse, safety does not stop with the fire testing. The DE 4259x is free of wood preservatives, toxic-heavy metals, phthalate plasticisers, formaldehyde, CMRs category 1A + 1B and volatile aromatic and halogenated organic compounds. Hesse Lignal “will not compromise on its customers’ health at any cost”. Hesse is using its partnership with Redwood Innovations to distribute this product in the UK. Customers wishing to try the PU Multicoat system can call Redwood and benefit from strong technical back-up over the phone, and on site if required. 02392 233310 sales@redwoodinnovations.co.uk

Fast drying for wood finishes Recently launched by the specialist heat company, Victory, the Heatlight Fast Bake Oven utilises infrared heat for fast drying of paint or other coatings on wood or metal. Finishes can be dried in minutes which previously would have taken hours to air dry, the company says. “We have developed infrared heat products for a lot of industrial processes,” says Alan Penman, Victory’s managing director. “We saw that we could put this experience to use in the furniture industry as we realised that often manufacturers have to wait for finishes to dry before they can carry on working. They needed a way to quickly dry finishes on products such as furniture panels, doors and window frames. Our technology was the perfect answer.”

The system comprises a drying cabinet equipped with four infrared cassettes. The cabinet has been designed to accommodate a mobile racking unit, so it can be located well away from the spraying or painting area. The racking can be loaded with painted product and then simply wheeled away, into the drying cabinet. Alan explains that another benefit of the The Heatlight Fast Bake system is reduction of Oven quickly dries paint and other finishes dust problems. “The drying process is fast and doesn’t involve any air movements and is, of course, in an enclosed cabinet, so dust problems are largely eliminated,” he says. “In fact, the whole workflow is improved and manufacturers can work more efficiently and increase productivity.” Supplied in flat pack format with easy-to-follow assembly instructions, the Fast Bake Oven is supplied with four 1500W cassettes – each

mountable in three height positions. The cassettes are fully dimmable, so heat can be controlled to suit individual jobs. Optional controllers are also available on request. The system can be customised to suit the customers’ requirements. 01442 215200 sales@victorylighting.co.uk victorylighting.co.uk

VGrind 360 is the new tool grinding machine from Vollmer, and is the successor to the VGrind 160 model. The specialist in grinding and eroding machines has equipped this new generation with enhanced travel distances to machine carbide tools, up to a diameter of 200mm.

VGrind 360 – the new generation of tool grinding Thanks to its two vertical spindles, the VGrind 360 also allows for tried-and-tested multi-level machining. This enables tool manufacturers to produce large numbers of milling cutters and drills quickly and precisely. Automated solutions, such as pallet magazines or free-arm robots, allow machining to continue unsupervised around the clock. The VGrind 360 enables the machining of carbide drills and milling cutters whose blanks are made from either solid carbide or carbidetipped steel bodies. Thanks to enhanced travel distances, the VGrind 360 can machine tools depending on their geometry up to a diameter of 200mm. Proven kinematics with two spindles As with the previous VGrind 160 model – the new generation comes with tried-and-tested kinematics with two vertically-arranged spindles. Unlike with a single spindle or horizontal double spindle, multi-level machining can be carried out thanks to the vertical arrangement. This grinding machine therefore achieves more precise results because a workpiece is only ever machined on the fixed bearing side of a grinding wheel set. In addition, the grinding wheel set is always located at the C-axis pivot point, which allows an accurate sharpening process. A further guarantee for precision and accuracy is the polymer concrete design of the machine, as this solid foundation provides improved damping and vibration behaviour. The new Vollmer VGrind360

F&JP_285.indd 94

The new Vollmer VGrind 360 with free-arm robot for automated tool loading

Automated production around the clock With five perfectly-harmonised CNC axes, the VGrind 360 achieves perfect interpolation with short travel distances for the linear axes and swivel ranges. This enables tool manufacturers to reduce processing times for machining workpieces. Non-productive times are reduced because the two grinding spindles can be loaded with different tools. An optional tool magazine with eight grinding wheel packages allows tools

on the vertical spindles to be changed over automatically. Users can use the HP 160 pallet magazine to supply up to 272 workpieces for aroundthe-clock, unsupervised machining. The HPR 250 free-arm robot can also be integrated. This is used to automatically manufacture carbide tools with various shaft diameters, resulting in three times as much capacity and even greater flexibility. Intuitive operation with established software Operation of the VGrind 360 can be easily and individually adjusted thanks to a heightadjustable, pivoting control panel. The display can be positioned in such a way that the operator has an optimal view of the graphic interface and the work area also remains constantly in sight. To control the machine, Vollmer uses the NUMROTOplus software, which offers comprehensive applications for the production and re-sharpening of various tools. “With the new VGrind 360, we are continuing to expand our commitment to the international tool grinding market in order to precisely and efficiently manufacture carbide tools,” adds Dr Stefan Brand, CEO of the Vollmer Group. “For us, the VGrind 360 is an important step towards us standing shoulder to shoulder with tool manufacturers across the world as their complete service provider.” 0115 9491040 admin-uk@vollmer-group.com vollmer-group.com

Widest selection of furniture Confirmat and Connector screws The Confirmat screw has been widely used in the furniture industry for many years. The popularity of these screws is due to its unique thread, allowing soft and medium denisity materials to be joined together at right angles and eliminates the need for nut and bolt alignment. The Hex drive allows for quick and easy installation, and a countersunk head enables the screw to be driven flush to the material surface. The company can also offer a Pozi drive if required. These are also available as Connector screws if a

Makita’s 447M M-Class dust extractor has set high performance and reliability standards and the latest version of the M-Class extractor, the new VC4210M, bristles with new features whilst maintaining a highly competitive price point. The new Makita VC4210M meets the EU standards of protection demanded of the M-Class dust control regulations. The new design has moved the motor, control module and main filter higher up into the upper body housing which increases the tank working capacity. This enables a 30 litre disposable bag to be filled and for wet suction the tank will hold 29 litres before the new, automatic fluid level valve shuts off the motor, protecting the machine from flooding. Available in 110v and 240v modes there are three variants: 110v models with and without Power Take Off to drive integrated power tools and a 240v model with Power Take Off. When connected to a power tool, the extractor switches off automatically when the power tool is shut down. The motor input wattage is 1000W

for the 110v model and 1200W for the 240v machine. The 110v model with Power Take Off will provide 1750W for tool power and the 240v model 1800W. ACL2002 saves heating and skip bills with new wood waste heater For over 15 years ACL2002 has manufactured three-piece suites and chairs from its 30,000ft² industrial unit in Dudley, West Midlands. Materials controller at ACL2002, Paul Forsyth, had heard about the benefits of wood waste heaters from another furniture manufacturer who recommended he speak to Wood Waste Technology to find out more. Paul says: “We started to look at wood waste heaters a while ago, as the factory’s original gas heating system was proving to be an expensive way to keep the factory warm in winter for our 120-plus employees, plus we were spending a lot of money hiring skips to dispose of the waste wood created from manufacturing the furniture frames. “When the existing heating system started to fail, it seemed the perfect time to invest in a new biomass solution, so we got in touch with Wood Waste Technology.” Following a site survey and quote, ACL2002 purchased a WT15 that was installed by Wood Waste Technology’s experienced engineers at the end of last year. Paul continues: “The wood waste heater has been such a great investment for the company, as it will save us tens of thousands of pounds over the years by reducing our skip hire and heating bills. We’ve been delighted with the service we’ve received from the team at Wood Waste Technology as they’re so helpful, approachable, quick to respond and they have certainly delivered everything they promised on time and in budget.” Kurt Cockroft says: “A large proportion of our new enquiries come from personal recommendation. We’ve created a range of wood waste heaters that

26/06/2017 10:29

are durable, reliable and so easy to use that our customers enjoy recommending their benefits to others. As a company we’re very proud to say that all the wood waste heaters we’ve ever sold are still operational today.” Wood Waste Technology offers a full range of wood waste heaters and boilers, from small hand-fired units to larger fully automatic systems, and offers site survey and design, as well as manufacture, installation and ongoing maintenance. The company also services all types of wood

Pioneering wood joining

NEW Cabineo The connector of the future – simple, fast and strong

The NEW Cabineo time-saving furniture connector requires no edge drilling. Machining occurs solely on the surface and the connector is used with all types of CNC machines. Cabineo offers more efficient production, faster installation and a higher clamping force than the traditional cam and dowel fitting. The Cabineo fitting is inserted into the routed shape on the surface. The pre-installed screw inside the fitting is then secured into the 5mm drill hole. The speed of a cordless drill joins the workpieces together quickly and powerfully. Cover caps in various colours can be clipped onto the Cabineo within seconds.
