Once again, the W Exhibition & Elements has changed its diary date – to 6-9th February, 2022. This will come as a shock to most in the industry (especially in light of Ligna, the vast German event, moving its timing to the same week as our national event was due to take place this coming September). Nickie West, the event’s director, explains the show organiser’s thinking on p10.

Trade shows are all about catching up with the latest offering from manufacturers and suppliers, and our industry is always evolving (take Industry 4.0, for example), so I’m really relishing the next opportunity to get hands-on with Ligna’s novelties this September – as long as we’re able to. And, as of yet, Germany’s impressive fittings and components event, interzum, remains scheduled to take place in 12 weeks’ time. Fashionable design is a wonderful ongoing experiment of humanity’s choatic existence, attempting to alight upon some or other state of design nirvana – which of course can never exist, because that kind of contrived, collegiate solution creates an inoffensive result which pleases nobody, least of all the consumer. Effectively, what we perceive as fashion is the attempt (successful or otherwise) to be different yet have enough appeal to be commercially successful. In this issue, you’ll find an article focused on IWM’s installation of Soukup’s impressive joinery production tech into one of the country’s most successful wooden window manufacturers, SPS Timber Windows. Is this what can be described a smart solution to a long-term problematic issue? I think so – fashionably so. For me, this is an example of an informed (and fashionable, if you like) reference point. Making timber windows is a craft with thousands of years of history, but its nadir from the 1970s onwards, as aluminium and then uPVC options came to the fore, saw wooden windows and doors become a byword for low quality and high maintenance. But in recent years, SPS, Gowercroft, Westbury and others have been succesfully crafting high-peformance, lowmaintenance wooden windows, and reaching an ever-larger audience. In the main, this is because of their preferred aesthetics, higher performance and lower maintenance characteristics. To me, this is proof, if it were needed, of the general acceptance that price is not the barrier to market acceptance many believe it to be – it is about what the product looks like, how it performs, what the back story is, and tangible value for money over a longer period. Furniture and interiors, like many other markets, is showing an inclination to move away from so-called ‘fast fashion’ to a more sustainable scenario which is, of course, less susceptible to cheaper, imported products – a far better place from which British furniture and joinery can once again dominate its national marketplace over the longer term. I hope you enjoy this issue. John Legg, editor john@media66.net

Marking a thirty-five-year partnership John Penny Woodworking Machinery and Stenner are celebrating 35 years of cooperation this year. Even before this, John Penny was involved in the sale of Stenner equipment while employed at Wadkin, so the relationship is over 40 years old. To mark this milestone, John Penny Woodworking Machinery is offering a special offer until the end of February 2021. The impressive ST100RB and ST100R resaws are both being offered with free commissioning by a Stenner engineer, together with free

upgrades to the specifications, for orders placed before the end of February this year. The impressive ST100RB is ideal for the joinery company wanting to improve its sawing capacity. With the thin kerf of the wide bandsaw blades, wastage is reduced, giving better timber utilisation. Safety is also improved because of the automatic roller feed system, with variable speeds. To complete the package, the ST100RB is being offered with a pack of three wide bandsaw blades free of charge. John Penny Woodworking

Machinery says that the robust ST100R is the first choice for timber merchants and sawmills – many having been supplied to companies in the UK and overseas. As standard, the R model has the Electronic Operator interface, with digital readout of fence position. In addition to the free commissioning, the ST100R specification has been upgraded to include foot pedal control of the feed roller opening. Montgomery Group, the W Exhibition & Elements organiser, has announced new dates for the event, which will return to the NEC from 6-9th February 2022.

New February 2022 dates for W Exhibition & Elements event The postponement of the UK’s flagship event for the furniture manufacturing and joinery industries follows a period of unprecedented uncertainty due to the ongoing global impact of Covid-19. Montgomery has taken proactive steps to move The W Exhibition & Elements from September 2021 to February 2022, creating a safer timeline for the industry to work towards. MD of the W Exhibition, Nickie West, says: “We have been in constant contact with the NEC throughout the pandemic to ensure that we deliver a safe and successful event when the W Exhibition & Elements returns. It’s our priority to deliver the best possible ROI for our exhibitors, and the best experience for our visitors. “When Ligna announced that it would be

postponing its May event to September, and in fact directly clashing with the W Exhibition & Elements, we immediately entered a consultation process with each of our stakeholders to develop a new timeline that would preserve the success of the show both now and in the future. The new winter 2022 timeline will allow us to do this.” Following its February 2022 outing, the W Exhibition & Elements will return to the NEC in September 2023 before continuing to follow a biennial frequency, importantly after Ligna, thereafter. Nickie adds: “After an extended period

FIRA Int achieves wider UKAS accreditation across seven standards FIRA International has achieved wider UKAS accreditation across seven British, European and American standards. The new accreditations were confirmed following a dedicated audit conducted by the UK Accreditation Service (UKAS). The new accreditations achieved for British standards include: • BS 8509:2008+A1:2011 Children’s beds for domestic use. Safety requirements and test methods • BS 8474:2013. Furniture. Chairs with electrically operated support surfaces. Requirements Under European standards, UKAS confirmed FIRA International’s accreditation to: • BS EN 716-1:2017. Furniture. American standards include: • ANSI/BIFMA X5.1 Office Chairs • ANSI/BIFMA X5.4 Lounge & Public Seating • BIFMA X6.4 Occasional-Use Seating Speaking on the new accreditation, Howard James, testing and technical manager at FIRA International, says: “As a team we’re really pleased to have achieved

these seven new accreditations from UKAS. These are all standards our experts were very accustomed to conducting, so the next logical step was to gain recognition from UKAS to underpin our current testing procedures. “In terms of our customers, with the Transition Period upon us, the North American accreditation will be key, as we’ve been supporting more

and more customers over recent months as they potentially begin to look away from Europe to new markets. “It’s worth noting that there are quite significant differences between British and European standards compared to North America, so a recognised test certificate showing conformity is key. BIFMA are launching a new approved scheme in early 2021, so with our new accreditations we’ll be able to go even further in supporting customers. “Our next aim is to attain UKAS accreditation for the California Technical Bulletin 117-2013 Requirements, Test Procedure and Apparatus for Testing the Smolder Resistance of Materials Used in Upholstered Furniture standard, which will again support clients as they target the North American market.” www.fira.co.uk/testing

Installations Forest Contracts selects Homag UK as machinery and software partner for new facility Forest Contracts is a market leader in the design and manufacture of hotel furniture. Its production is focused in two areas – bedroom, and front-ofhouse, public-area furniture. The company is one of the preferred suppliers for Hilton, IHG (Holiday Inn & Holiday Inn Express), Marriott, and other renowned hotel groups including Accor (Novotel & Ibis). It also supplies well-crafted furniture to independent hotels, bars, restaurants, hospitals, offices and domestic developments.

Increased production efficiency with the HOMAG LOOPTEQ return system for one man operation

“The business was launched in 1997 by Kevin Bullock and Darren Taylor,” explains fellow director, Mike Jacklyn. “Our factory is based in the small village of High Easter, very close to Stanstead airport. We also have a design office based up north in Knaresborough. “In September 2020 we moved into a new 18,000ft2 production facility about a mile from our original unit. The move was part of an expansion strategy that included a number of goals: firstly, we wanted more space to create a better working environment; secondly, as continuous steady growth is important to us, we wanted to establish new working practices that would help us achieve this. “A major element of the plan included investing in all-new, high-tech machinery and software. The aim was to maximise and develop the skills of our current workforce whilst giving us increased throughput, efficiency gains, and maintaining the high-quality output and sustainability on which our reputation is built.

“The reason for moving just down the road from our existing unit was stability. We wanted to minimise the risk of losing the skilled and talented craftsmen who are the backbone of our business and have been with us for many years.”

for ourselves whether the machines we were considering purchasing were right for our business. The visits also highlighted the ease at which all the Homag machines can be linked together to create a seamless production flow.”

Partnering with Homag UK James Chalk, production engineer at Forest Contracts, takes up the story: “When it came to selecting the right machinery and software partner, our priorities were reliability and service support. Much of our business is based on quick-turnaround projects, so if anything goes wrong and there’s a delay, it can cause us serious problems. “Homag’s reputation for service, support and machinery performance is unmatched in the industry. This was something we experienced first-hand when they set up visits to companies who had similar manufacturing processes to our own. “Seeing these facilities enabled us to judge

Specifying the Homag solution Forest Contracts wanted a complete manufacturing solution and, working closely with the team at Homag UK, they drew up the specification for the new production line. The final package consisted of five machines – a Storeteq S-200 automated storage and retrieval system, a Sawteq B-300 beamsaw, an Edgeteq S-380 edgebander with a Loopteq O-300 return system, and a Drillteq V-500 vertical CNC drilling machine. James continues: “As a business, we’ve been moving towards a software-driven operation. Partnering with Homag has enabled us to achieve this. From the control of stock with the Storeteq S-200 storage system to the cutting,

INSTALLATIONS 17

edging and drilling, everything is linked and controlled using Homag’s advanced, yet easy-touse software.” As Mike explains: “The Storeteq system has probably delivered the biggest step-change in the business. Previously, board stock was all handled manually, which not only gave rise to considerable health and safety issues, but also led to significant challenges in keeping track of stock movements. “With the Storeteq, everything is automated. The boards are unloaded off the lorry straight into the Storeteq, which stores the material, so we know exactly what we’ve got and where it is in the system. When the boards are allocated to jobs, they are delivered to the saw for sizing. Off-cuts are automatically taken back into stock by the system for later use, maximising stock usage and minimising wastage. “The other big impact on production efficiency has been the Loopteq return system – it allows us to run the edgebander with just one operator. Panels are automatically returned to the operator for the next edge process, eliminating the need for a second operative. That person can now be employed elsewhere in the business where their skills are more relevant.” Reducing the need for subcontracting and boosting efficiency Another objective of the investment was to reduce or eliminate the reliance on subcontractors for elements of the production process. “We needed to take control of every aspect of production,” explains James. “The old machinery didn’t allow us to do certain tasks, so these had to be contracted out. Now, as the Homag machinery can perform these tasks, we have all-but eliminated our reliance on subcontractors, which is a real advantage to us. “Overall, each machine has added to the efficiency of the business. The Storeteq has given us total control of our board stock whilst reducing wastage, and minimising health and safety risks.

The STORETEQ S-200 storage system has automated processes for Forest Contracts

HOMAG DRILLTEQ V-500 - compact dowelling system for safe and fast production

“The advantage of the Sawteq B-300 beamsaw is its easy operation, which enables us to use less-skilled machinists. This gives us added flexibility as, with minimal training, any member of staff can operate it. “The speed of the B-300 offers another benefit, by significantly improving our throughput. With the capability to handle a broader range of maximum and minimum dimensions, the saw also reduces the level of secondary operations required in the business. “Combined with the Loopteq O-300, the Edgeteq S-380 has speeded up production, given us flexibility and enabled us to use a wider variety of materials – both edge tapes and thicker panels. “Finally, the Drillteq V-500’s automatic doweling system has been a tremendous benefit, removing many manual processes in our furniture production. With a footprint of about a third of the size of the old CNC, it allows for a more compact production cell. It is also much

faster and safer than our old flatbed CNC, as it eliminates the need for the operator to reach out and lift heavy panels on and off the machine.” A guiding hand from Homag Mike continues: “Throughout the process, it was reassuring to work with Homag. They were always there to hold our hand and guide us through every step of the process, which for us, as a small business, was not only beneficial, but also very comforting. “Homag clearly understood our business and our needs, but they always questioned those needs. This led them to offer alternative solutions that enabled us to fine-tune the machine specifications and achieve the perfect production cell. “The installation itself was superbly planned and implemented by the Homag team. In a phased operation, we transferred from the old site to the new facility, starting with the Storeteq system. We then installed the saw, edgebander, and finally the Drillteq. It was only when the new equipment was commissioned and running that we switched off the old manufacturing site. “During the transition, Homag always had someone on-site to help us. The pandemic, however, meant pre-installation training had to be adapted. Rather than taking place in Germany and Castle Donington, it was successfully delivered via webinars. Final training was completed on the machines once they were installed. “The whole experience of working with Homag has been fantastic – the people are all very proactive and positive. The level of support throughout has made us feel a valued customer, and our new factory has become a truly effective marketing tool for us. It’s a real asset – we bring potential clients to see the factory in operation and it gives them immense confidence in our capabilities,” concludes Mike. 26 SAWS, BLADES & CUTTING TECHNOLOGY

The woodworking processing industry’s evolution towards a fully digital environment has seen technology improve by leaps and bounds.

Salvamac SalvaPush 2000 – a woodcutting system for Industry 4.0

Launched in early 2019 by Salvamac’s CrossCutting Division as an evolution of more than 20 years in the field focused on the cutting and optimisation of wood, SalvaPush 2000 is the group’s flagship crosscutting optimising saw. SalvaPush 2000 is ideally suited to cutting single pieces of wood with length optimisation, as well as cutting boards using a prefixed cutting cycle. It can be applied for use in a range of solid wood market segments, such as: windows and doors; furniture; beams and houses; flooring; sofas; glue panels and lamellar wood; pallets; garden furniture; and children’s toys. The machine can be easily integrated with other machinery and data within a factory, as it can receive cutting lists directly from the office, and can connect to multi-blade machines or moulders via automatic loading and unloading systems. The instantaneous graphics and a large touchscreen, complemented with digital communication among all electric components, allows easy and fast data entry. Towards Industry 4.0 Besides easy integration with the company’s management, recent developments in barcode data importing and the related JIT management systems (from the development of the customer’s order to the finished product) make it an ideal solution for single-batch production processes.

An operator is able to easily manage a single piece by loading the pieces after reading the relevant barcode, and leaving the management to the supervisor – additional software that manages the entire data process. In fact, flexible and advanced technological solutions allow both up- and downstream communication with the company’s software. SalvaPush 2000 comes with a brand-new software version that claims to be easily and completely manageable by anyone – like a smartphone, with website graphics and all the convenience of data setting via a large touchscreen, with all electronic components

connected in digital communication. Moreover, there are new and exclusive mechanical solutions both for the cutting and the pusher systems that become part of the complete digital management of the machines’ communication systems – not only within their electronic components, but, above all, towards external IT systems. The application of SalvaPush 2000 in the construction component and special pallet sectors fully confirms these recent developments. The new and exclusive mechanical solutions are also present in both the cutting and pushing systems.

27

A special system, with a 55mm-wide toothed belt and 33 strips of hard steel, allows high precision and capacity. The aluminium beam is big and solid – at a height of 135mm and a width of 120mm, it is fixed in a steel structure in two parts for better solidity and reliability. The beam is also covered and protected by a special steel cover. All this guarantees a long machine life, with no dust or service issues. Case in point The production of sofas is sometimes a complicated process, due to the variety of

models offered. A small batch size, or even batch size 1, is not uncommon – it is thus necessary to work job by job. Compared to older, more traditional cutting systems, the SalvaPush 2000 has become a cost-cutting machine for one major producer. The yield of its wood has increased by about +9%, the number of operators needed is about half than before, and the manufacturer no longer needs skilled operators – cutting can be done in complete safety, and statistical data can be easily generated. Creator Christian Salvador defines Salvapush

‘The strategy is clear: to optimise the process and use every possible country advantage to produce machines with the highest quality and affordable prices for the customer’

2000 as a revolution in the market’s approach: “Our network and its strength will allow us to introduce new products for the solid wood industry, but at a price that allows more companies to choose the technological path. “The strategy is clear – to optimise the process and use every possible country advantage to produce machines with the highest quality and affordable prices for the customer.” Looking forward The market growth of Salvamac is increasing steadily and, despite the Covid-19 pandemic, has increased by a further +50%. At the moment, the company’s main markets are in Europe – first of all, the UK. Moving forward, the next goal for 2021-22 is to develop in the UK, increasing market share and becoming the undisputed leader. The ingredients of this success, says Salvamac, are product range expansion, innovation and investment. www.salvamac.com

28 SAWS, BLADES & CUTTING TECHNOLOGY

Just one year before Great Lakes Custom Tool Manufacturing Inc (GLCT) celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2019, the Wisconsin-based company was marking other milestones in its prestigious history, with the opening of a 20,000ft2 factory extension and the arrival of five additional Vollmer machines.

Vollmer is the only name on ‘the list’ For anyone who knows the Peshtigo business that was born out of a 1700ft2 Quonset hut in the late 70s, the rate of expansion and investment comes as no surprise. Founded by the current owner and ‘head coach’ Russ Martin, the journey has seen GLCT evolve from a small saw sharpening business to a custom tooling manufacturer, and far beyond. As vice president, co-owner, and son of the ‘head coach’, Ray Martin, confirms: “Back in the early days we had to put antifreeze down the toilets and through the plumbing to stop everything freezing up in the winter. Now, we have a 100,000ft2 factory that is fully temperature-controlled all year round.” Like any successful head coach, Russ has developed both his team and business through the decades, with a multitude of accolades and acquisitions that have set the company apart from its rivals. With State awards for Family Business of the Year, Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the Year, Governor’s New Product Award for Small Companies and Challengers Distinguished Achievement Award, GLCT has also expanded upon its success with the acquisition of Sonnet Tools, Paso Robles and AAA Precision Tool & Cutter Grinding Inc. The result is a business with more than 70,000 product items in its armoury across the woodworking and metal-cutting tool industry. Part of this product portfolio includes the GreatLoc and Helicarb technologies, which have been developed and patented by GLCT. Add to this the bespoke product solutions, re-manufacture and repair, expert service and support, and the product offering and service is certainly a cut above the competition. “The combination of products, service, support, and the company culture of investing and innovation, is why we have a broad customer base throughout North, Central and South America,” confirms Ray. With more than 80 staff, 50+ CNC machine tools, a multitude of manual machines and

Some of the Vollmer machines at Great Lakes Custom Tool Manufacturing Inc

Founder and owner Russ Martin with vice president, co-owner and son Ray Martin, in front of the Vollmer QWD 750 wire erosion machine

inspection and measuring technology, one brand that has lasted the distance is Vollmer. Ray continues: “We bought our first Vollmer machine back in 1979 when we started, and this was followed by a Vollmer CHC22H saw grinder for face and top grinding in 1982. We then bought a manual side grinding machine in 1985, and this machine is still in service today for some of our repair work! It wasn’t until 1999 that we bought our next Vollmer machine – a CX100 for top and face grinding of carbide-tipped circular saws.” Opening the doors to innovation Referring to the situation in the late 90s, Ray says: “At the time, we needed to get into the PCD tooling market. The woodworking industry was evolving rapidly with new composite materials coming through, and the machine technology just wasn’t out there. Through the late 80s and early 90s we hadn’t bought any Vollmer machines. In honesty, the service wasn’t there at that period – but wow, has that changed! “We put our faith in Vollmer in 1999, as we didn’t have anywhere else to turn from a technology standpoint – their machines were streets ahead of anything else in the industry. The technology was matched by the service, and since the turn of the century we have added two CHD270 machines, a DES300, a CHF270 and CHF840, a CHC840 and even the ND250 robotic loading system.” With average sawblade order quantities ranging from four to six-off and even up to 20 and 50, the Vollmer TCT machines are producing a substantial quantity of new sawblades every week – with an additional large quantity of saw service, re-grind and repair volumes passing through the company as well.

PCD changes the game Back in the early 2000s, the woodworking market was evolving in terms of material and tool technology, so after the success of the Vollmer CX100 in 1999, GLCT installed its first QWD wire erosion machine in 2002 for processing PCD cutting tools – the QWD750. As Ray recalls: “Our customer base for PCD tools grew at a slow and steady pace for a number of years, but it was certainly the QWD750 that changed the game for us. “We added a second Vollmer wire erosion machine, the QWD755, in 2004. The first QWD750 machine offered us all the capacity we needed, but we bought a second QWD as a just-in-case machine, as we developed a steady customer base and subsequently reliance on our QWD750, so the second machine was back-up. “During this period, we acquired Sonnet Tool and the exclusive rights to Helicarb, which coincided with our diversification into the metal-cutting market. By 2009, the move into the metalworking industry and the growing demand in the woodworking sector had increased our PCD tooling business sixfold.” The productivity of the two Vollmer QWD wire erosion machines carried the capacity of increased business until 2014. As Ray states: “By 2014, demand for our PCD tools was stretching our QWD machines, so we installed a six-axis QXD250 disc erosion machine. Unlike the QWD machines, the QXD enabled automated production of tools up to 320mm diameter, and it was installed with the HC5 loading system that can accommodate up to 28 tools.” The automation facility of the HC5 loading system enables the QXD250 to manufacture PCD tools unmanned – and, depending on the complexity of the tools, the QXD250 can run for

29

days without operator intervention. With GLCT realising the benefits of Vollmer automation systems, the QXD250 was followed in 2015 by yet another QWD machine – the QWD750H, with a 12-tool pallet system. As part of the investment drive, GLCT also invested in the Vollmer QM Eco disc erosion machine for PCD tools. Commenting on this, Ray recalls: “We had invested in the QWD and QXD machines, and they delivered significant success for our business, but we then needed another machine and we felt another QWD would have been too big a gun for our needs. We had built our PCD business up with the QWD, but as an efficient, productive and cost-effective solution, the QM Eco was the perfect fit.” The acquisition of the QXD250 with HC5 loading, the QWD750H and QM Eco provided the production capacity to support the growth trajectory that GLCT witnessed concerning its PCD cutting tool business for both the metal cutting and woodworking industries – but only for a short while. Continued growth trajectory With plans afoot for a factory extension and production capacity bulging at the seams, Ray went out to auction and bought another Vollmer QWD750 to alleviate capacity concerns, whilst placing orders for more machines. As soon as the 20,000ft2 factory expansion was completed in 2020, the new machine orders started arriving

to fill the space and provide much-needed production capacity. Ray continues: “It hasn’t just been Vollmer machines arriving here. We now have numerous CNC machines alongside the Vollmers, and we have invested heavily in supporting equipment and tooling that ensures we have the very latest technology to give our customers the finest quality and service possible.” The Vollmer machines that arrived at the factory in 2018 included a QM110 disc erosion machine for PCD tools, a QF270 for machining the tooth sides of PCD-tipped circular saws via disc erosion, and the arrival of the company’s first VPulse500 wire erosion machine, with the HR external workpiece storage system for automated loading of up to 16 tools. As the successor to the longstanding QWD range of wire erosion machines from Vollmer, the product improvements – and in particular the VPulse erosion generator technology – have certainly been noticed by GLCT. “The VPulse generator has made this new machine at least +20% more productive than the existing QWD machines,” says Ray. “In addition, the surface finishes on our cutting tools are even better than before. Furthermore, the new-look machine has the latest Vollmer ExProg programming system integrated to provide an intuitive user interface that offers both ease of use and a simulation system for checking edges and geometries to save time and eliminate human error. It really is a fantastic machine.”

What does the future hold? While none of us can see into the future, one thing that looks certain is that GLCT will continue its path to success. The company has invested heavily and wisely in both its staff and technology, and the German brand of machine tools has played a significant role for the company nestled on the side of Lake Michigan. While business for GLCT has been impacted throughout the Covid pandemic, like most businesses, the company has still retained the foresight to invest – installing its 19th Vollmer machine, a QR270 erosion machine for processing the tooth tops of PCD-tipped circular sawblades. Concluding on the relationship with Vollmer, Ray says: “When it comes to manufacturing PCD cutting tools and sawblades, Vollmer is our go-to. As well as investing in all these machines, we also bought the Vollmer VGrind 360 for our sister company AAA Precision Tool & Cutter Grinding LLC. Bought for grinding carbide tools, the two vertically aligned spindles have made a big difference to our productivity and surface finishes at AAA. “So, whether it’s circular saws, TCT or PCD saws, solid carbide or PCD-tipped tools from rod, Vollmer has it covered. We wouldn’t even think of looking anywhere else – and we wouldn’t need to.” 0115 949 1040 www.vollmer-group.com

Daltons Wadkin is helping manufacturers across the UK and Ireland increase productivity through the supply and installation of Salvador crosscutting systems.

Salvador boosts customer performance across UK and Ireland

Despite the obvious challenges of 2020, sales of Salvador crosscutting solutions have seen exponential growth over the past 12 months – a trend that looks set to continue into 2021. Increased sales to producers of garden furniture, studios, sheds, timber-framed buildings, fencing, joinery, pallets and cases have been fuelled by a need to meet soaring demand, boost capacity and take control of manufacturing in-house. All timber processors should be aware of the countless benefits a Salvador automatic crosscut saw can bring to their production. The SuperPush 200, SuperPush 250 and SuperAngle 600 all share the same key attributes: Optimising – reduce waste, increase yield Salvador automatic saws benefit from full PC control. Running powerful optimising software, cutting lists are continually analysed to give maximum material yield for each individual length of timber cut. Residual offcuts can then be ‘shattered’ for secondary processing and removed from the production line through an optional waste trapdoor. Defecting – grade and remove Operators can decide which parts of a timber length are acceptable and which are not.

Using a fluorescent pen, operators mark knots and shakes which do not meet production standards. The Salvador analyses these defects in conjunction with the cutting list to optimise the length accordingly. In a similar method, entire lengths of timber can be graded from one to five, with each grade having its own separate cutting list. Reduce labour, reduce costs The work of four or five operators using manual saws can be handled by a single Salvador crosscut. Customers upgrading from other models of automatic saw can also expect a performance boost. A host of optional infeed and outfeed features further increase throughput – chain infeed, increase pusher speed, automatic outfeed collection, outfeed length selectors, and label or inkjet printing. Accuracy and versatility Whether straight or angled cutting, a Salvador will meet the strictest of tolerances. Standard machines deliver cut lengths to within +/0.5mm. Not good enough? The Salvador’s optional magnetic strip system increases accuracy to +/-0.1mm. When angle-cutting, rotation of the blade between +/- 70° is made in under a second, to a precision of +/- 0.1° (special angle parameters are available as an option).

31

Software integration Salvador has the power to adapt to the user’s preference. Cutting lists can be programmed directly at the machine, or remotely from any office-based PC using a familiar Excel spreadsheet. The data is then transferred via USB drive or a standard wired/ wireless network connection. For timber frame manufacturers, the Salvador can be integrated into existing software production management systems such as Consultec, hsbcad, Wolf Systems, etc.

One of the most significant benefits of ownership of an AXYZ routing/cutting system supplied by AAG is the access it provides to arguably the most comprehensive range of essential spare parts, accessories and consumables, available 24/7 via AAG’s ecommerce online CNCShop Division. Included in the range are special-purpose tools designed for applications in which standard spiral tools are not an ideal solution.

Special cutting tool from AAG’s CNC Shop Division ensures “perfect” edge finish

A typical example of these special-purpose tools is the Marathon Compression Tool. This has been designed specifically for the processing of particle woods like MDF and laminates, the edges of which are liable to fracture or fray if standard spiral tools are employed. Consequently, it has proved an important machining enhancement for furniture manufacturers, panel processors, and industrial woodworkers in general. Supplied in a choice of diameters and lengths to accommodate different material-processing requirements, the Marathon Compression Tool embodies an advanced geometry and a special coating that protects the cut edge of the material from the high temperature generated

during the routing/cutting process. The combined upward/downward motion of the tool ensures a clean, “perfect” edge finish on the top and bottom surfaces of the material – an attribute of special significance when handling double-sided laminates. The Marathon Compression Tool is just one of a range of special-purpose routing/cutting tools available through the CNCShop facility. These also include a Diamond Cutting Tool for the processing of acrylic and plastic sheets, and a Long Reach Tool for cutting foam and similar ‘soft’ materials used primarily in packaging applications. This customer support facility also includes a vast range of standard tools and accessories, including high-quality router bits,

collets and cones, various types of spindle and oscillating and tangential cutting blades, all of which are sourced and updated by AAG from leading international suppliers. CNCShop has recently undergone a major upgrade, making it much faster and easier to navigate and locate products and services. The site also now enables customers to engage with AAG technical engineers in one-to-one live discussions, to ensure only the most appropriate and cost-effective product is selected for a given application. Fittings & Components Ready-to-assemble furniture has a reputation for being time-consuming and complicated to put together. Many of today’s products don’t deserve this reputation, but there’s always room for improvement, says Gary McMahon of Titus, who offers a simple approach for assessing assembly friendliness.

Making assembly friendly The majority of people find the prospect of putting together ready-to-assemble (RTA) furniture daunting, so suppliers have much to gain by building a reputation for products that are fast and easy to assemble. Hearing a friend say that they have never had any problems with RTA furniture from brand XYZ is a powerful recommendation. Increasing ease of assembly is therefore a key ambition for furniture manufacturers. But how can this be done? The first step is to note that if you want to control something, you have to be able to measure it. Measuring ease of assembly, however, isn’t particularly intuitive – at least it wasn’t until Titus developed the concept of the Consumer Assembly Friendliness (CAF) score. The CAF score is a numerical measure of how easy a piece of RTA furniture is to put together. It’s easy to work out, and it’s not tied to Titus products, although the company naturally hopes that furniture manufacturers will work with Titus to develop ways of reducing their CAF scores.

The CAF score is calculated from this formula: CAF = (T + A) x N Where T is the total number of parts, A is the number of actions it takes to assemble them, and N is the number of types of parts. Let’s look at an example that, for the sake of simplicity, deals only with part of the assembly process – joining a cabinet side to a base using two wooden dowels, two metal dowels that screw into place, and two cams. The wooden dowels are supplied in a sealed plastic bag. The metal dowels and the cams are in another sealed plastic bag. The side panel and the base have protective cardboard overwraps. We have eight parts, including the side panel and the base. Assembly involves 17 actions: open the bag of wooden dowels, open the bag of metal dowels and cams, remove the cardboard from the side panel, remove cardboard from the base, insert the two wooden dowels, screw the metal dowels into place (three turns each, so count three actions per dowel), insert the two cams, mate the panel to the base, and tighten

FITTINGS & COMPONENTS 35

the two cams. Finally, we have five different types of parts (side panel, base panel, wooden dowels, metal dowels and cams). Putting these numbers into the formula: CAF = (8 + 17) x 5 = 125 Computing the CAF for a whole item of furniture involves a bit more work, but it’s still straightforward. Let’s see how that CAF score could be improved. We could use the latest TL5 full metal jacket-type cam-and-dowel connectors. These don’t need to be supplemented by wooden dowels and, instead of screwing into place, they push into predrilled holes. Now we only have six parts, nine actions, and four types of part, so: CAF = (6 + 9) x 4 = 60 That’s a big improvement for a modest change. Of course, there are other options. These include using one-piece connectors and systems that allow cams and dowels to be pre-inserted at the furniture manufacturer’s factory. The CAF scoring system applies not only to connectors but also to other components, so it is possible to calculate a CAF score that covers all aspects of furniture assembly. Manufacturers who do this have a reliable metric for assessing the user impact of any changes they make. And, when making changes, it is worth remembering that leading cabinet hardware manufacturers like Titus are constantly enhancing their products, so it is worth getting up-to-date advice. The best solution from a year or two ago may well have been superseded. Ease of assembly for RTA furniture can make the difference between a product that’s successful and one that isn’t. Using CAF scores provides a reliable way of measuring ease of assembly and, by combining CAF scoring with the latest developments in cabinet hardware, furniture manufacturers are in a better position than ever to maximise the consumer appeal of their products. www.titusplus.com

Anyone planning to create walls or furniture with a cutting-edge stone or concrete look will find many surfaces at Ostermann that will help to implement the trend with an impressively realistic solid appearance.

Surfaces in a stone and concrete look

Not everything that looks like stone or concrete necessarily has to be solid – alternative solutions are equally suited to creating a cutting-edge solid look. Ostermann offers many different materials for a wide range of applications. Acrylic surfaces with shiny marble optics The marble decors from the SibuGlas product line transform wood materials into an illusion of solid, polished marble surfaces. This effect is achieved by backing acrylic glass surfaces with photorealistic decors, creating a unique depth effect and thereby a deceptively real illusion. Boards can be delivered with either an untreated or a self-adhesive rear side. When the surface is subject to higher exposure – as, for example, in horizontal applications, – it is recommended to also select a scratch-resistant AR+ variant, which is available from Ostermann. RollBeton – concrete on a roll Flexible decors on rolls by Ostermann are developing into a classic for use in shopfitting,

exhibition stand construction, furnituremaking and interior design. RollBeton is delivered in lightweight, easy-to process rolls, and still has a finish coating containing real concrete. The material’s processing properties make it easy to cover furniture and walls, or even create impressive designer pieces. Comprehensive sample service Ostermann’s diversity of stone look surfaces is enormous, which is why the edging specialist offers an extensive sample service that will help prospective users make their choice – all mentioned materials and decors are also available as samples. For any questions on the products, well-trained sales employees will, of course, be on hand. For further information on the mentioned surfaces, as well as helpful application videos, enter the search item “#surfaces” into the search field of the company’s website. 01905 793550 s.parsons@ostermann.eu www.ostermann.eu

Space Tower from Blum – “simply the best” larder solution Space Tower takes larders to new heights. Forget the old problems of losing tins of baked beans because they have been pushed to the back of a fixed shelf, or having to unload most of a shelf to find that elusive packet of Brazil nuts that were last used a year ago. The ‘shelves’ in Space Tower are actually internal pull-out drawers, which are accessible from three sides and, because they pull out to full extension, this means every item in the drawer is immediately available and visible. Space Tower has also been designed to suit all kitchen sizes. For those living in a single-roomed flat, there is no problem, as the entry-level unit is just 300mm wide – while those living in a castle can have a massive 1400mm-wide unit. Heights and depths are similarly customisable. With the new Legrabox Space Tower, huge amounts of heavy products can also be stored. Depending on the width of the larder, each drawer can store up to either 40kg or 70kg – the weight of a small person! Internal organisation has also been considered. Blum’s Ambia-Line dividers mean users can easily separate packets from tins, or sweet from savoury, meaning no time is wasted looking for product. The dividing system also helps keep packets and bottles upright – so no more spills. Of course, Space Tower is not just for the kitchen – bathrooms and bedrooms also benefit from easy-access, ergonomic solutions to storage, and the flexible heights mean the room does not have to be overwhelmed by a tall unit. 01908 285700 www.blum.com

Lamello AG and SCM UK share a common goal – to offer simple, smart and effective solutions that enhance productivity in the woodworking industry.

SCM and Lamello’s smart partnership

SCM’s CNC range offers effective, one-click insertion of Lamello’s P-System and Cabineo.

Both innovators in their own right, SCM and Lamello’s products are intrinsically linked, as they continue to push the boundaries of design and technology – and now they have joined forces to offer a one-hit machining process that gives CNC users a quick and costeffective way to join panels without the need for glue. “For many years there has been a need to standardise the way we connect cabinets,” begins Duncan Smith, showroom manager at SCM UK. “In Europe, this has long been Lamello’s niche – in many countries they are seen as the industry standard – and their joining solutions have become the go-to fixings for many manufacturers. “Whilst relatively new in the UK, the macro apps developed by SCM, which allow for effective, one-click insertion of Lamello’s P-System and Cabineo, have been tried and tested over several years. As new fixings are launched and the technology behind our machines continues to advance, our in-house team continues to create and update Lamelloready macro apps that are free to download from our very own Maestro software system.” Although these are used by SCM customers

globally, Duncan admits the UK market is only now starting to understand the true time-saving benefits of Lamello’s range when used on SCM’s CNC range. “Regardless of the size of your production or the CNC model being operated, our universal Lamello macro apps offer simple and effective one-hit machining. No second machining is required. That’s the beauty of this process – it can all be completed on a single machine. “You could be a small joinery workshop using a Morbidelli N100 three-axis flatbed CNC, or a large manufacturer operating a top-of-the-range, fully automated X400. The principle remains the same. Our macro apps offer quick, precise and consistent results for joining panels, whatever model you use.” With multiple processes to choose from on SCM’s Maestro Digital System, each function has been designed to offer solutions to a wealth of panel processing requirements. “One size doesn’t fit all,” says Duncan. “When it comes to the Cabineo, where do you want the macro to start? Do you want the panel to be drilled or routered? Do you want repetition, or do you want to work with 90° butt joints or mitre joints?

“Alternatively, when it comes to the P-System, do you want the router tool to complete the job in one sweep, or use the sawblade to cut 1.2mm and draw back out? “Our macros have been designed for easy manipulation, offering you complete flexibility. You can even set up parametric conditions within that panel that make the CNC introduce more connectors automatically if the width or length of the panel changes. And, because our software is designed in-house and we don’t rely on third parties, our customers have everything at their fingertips. It’s simplicity at its best.” For those customers that have not yet experienced Lamello’s CNC connectors for themselves, demonstrations at SCM’s Nottingham showroom illustrate just how quick, easy and accurate the process is. “We encourage our customers to come and see our machines in action and to watch the whole process. We also perform demonstrations remotely, via multi-cam live broadcast, on our customer’s preferred web collaboration platform. We place a piece of MDF on the table of one of our three-, four- and five-axis models, and cut six squares from it. Every side is machined and assembled in under five minutes flat,” explains Duncan. “Customers are always wowed by the sheer speed of the process and the level of accuracy achieved when using Lamello’s fixings. These results are simply not achievable when using traditional cam-and-dowel fittings. You

can’t match the speed, precision and overall strength of the product, which, not forgetting, is completed entirely on one machine. “This, partnered with free software updates offered to customers several times a month and access to hundreds of readily available macro apps to drag and drop into your cabinet programmes, makes for a winning combination. All that’s left to do is to purchase an aggregate and your fixings from a Lamello dealer.” Duncan adds: “Smart partnerships lead to good outcomes. For us, it would be a limitation

not to have Lamello’s fixings featured on the software on our machines. SCM and Lamello work in sync – we are both innovators, and we are both committed to our customers. That’s why, together, we offer dynamic solutions that allow our customers to stay ahead of the curve.” www.lamello.co.uk To book a demonstration, visit www.scmgroup.com/en_GB or call 01159 770044.

According to the Attic Self Storage ‘Mover or Improvers Expert Advice Booklet’, British households are set to spend an average of £6531 transforming their homes this year.

Slide into a refreshed new style this year While the open-plan home design has increased in popularity over the years, whereby partition walls are removed to form larger, sociable spaces, a ‘broken plan’ style may be more suitable, especially with more people than ever now working from home. This approach retains many of the benefits associated with the open-plan design, but allows for the creation of distinct zones that offer more privacy when needed. Rather than removing walls, a broken plan design will provide subtle divides that create a feeling of separation and peace without making rooms feel closed off. As such, achieving this requires ingenuity, especially when it comes to partitions. A high-quality pocket door system such as the Klüg Ultra Pocket Door Kit is an ideal solution. The door slides along a horizontal track into a cavity in the wall, where it remains neatly hidden away. This can allow for carpenters to create zones within a home that can be opened or closed off neatly and quickly. In addition, when compared to standard doors, pocket doors give homeowners greater flexibility when it comes to how much privacy they require at any given time, while maximising floor space. When purchasing the Klüg Pocket Door Kits from leading supplier Ironmongery Direct, users

can be assured the kit contains everything required to install the doors, including universal headers, support studs, door hangers, door guides, screws and nails. If a pocket door does not suit, a sliding barn door could be an attractive option. Adding rustic flair to the home, Klüg has Barn Strap Sliding Gear available with a 2000mm track that can hold door weights up to 120kg. These sets are available in black, antique brass and antique bronze finishes, with soft-close options available for extra peace and quiet in the home. Klüg also offers an extensive range of cabinet furniture to add that high-quality finishing touch that homeowners seek. These include ballbearing drawer runners, ranging from 450mm in length to heavy-duty options in 800mm lengths that can hold up to 80kg. What is more, they are available in bright zinc and zinc to match with the desired aesthetic.

Klüg cabinet hinges are three-way adjustable to ensure a “perfect” fit every time, and are sprung to pull the cabinet door closed and keep it closed. In addition, these hinges come in a soft-close option, in a range of sizes. The exclusive Klüg range can be relied upon for long-lasting performance, and is backed by a comprehensive 10-year guarantee as standard across all door kits and standalone products. IronmongeryDirect has been supplying architectural ironmongery to the trade for over 50 years and has an extensive stock range of over 18,000 products under one roof – including additional handles, flush pulls, and everything else a professional joiner could require. The online supplier also offers a range of flexible delivery options, including click and collect, next-day delivery, and even same-day delivery for selected postcodes. www.ironmongerydirect.co.uk/brands/klug

With a new year starting, the Pfleiderer Design Collection 2021-2024 is being launched. Coming with the motto ‘make your visions work’, it comprises a total of 284 colours and decors, including 66 new products. Right on schedule with the distribution of the boards, Ostermann is also providing the matching ABS edgings.

ABS edgings for the new Pfleiderer Collection already available at Ostermann

Just in time for the launch of the the new Pfleiderer collection, Ostermann has the matching edgings in stock

In line with the ‘make your visions work’ slogan, all designs can be combined flexibly and new compositions created, thanks to Pfleiderer’s DST system for decors, textures and core materials. All of the 284 colours and decors are available as HPL – 139 of them also as direct-faced DecoBoard – from stock, and through a fast delivery programme. Since the beginning of the year, Ostermann has had the matching ABS edgings in stock to help craftsmen implement their visions for furniture and rooms and endow their workpieces with the right edging decor. Carpenters/cabinetmakers can find all the information on the new edgings by entering #Highlights01 in the search field on Ostermann’s website. Matching edgings from 1m Ostermann supplies the new edgings from stock, in small amounts from only 1m, and in

standard dimensions of 23, 33, 43 and 100mm x 1 or 2mm. To implement the look and feel of the plain surface finishes at the edging, the edging specialist has launched a new structure for a “perfect” surface finish. Edgings with the new microstructure have a matt look and a soft texture. New matt plain decors Around half of the new Pfleiderer collection consists of plain colours. More than 100 different colourful uni-shades cover the spectrum of colours, in even gradations. However, besides classical intensive colours can be found an increased number of smooth pastels and taupe shades. The range of neutral plain colours is quite extensive, too. It includes more than 40 colour variants – from Icy White to Graphite Black. All plain-coloured boards – whether vivid or neutral – are fully available with a sand pearl

structure (SD) for the first time. It is a matt, filigree texture which gives the colours an elegant new look. Striking material and wood reproductions According to Ostermann’s experts, the morethan 50 material reproductions – in metal-, concrete-, textile- and stone-look, or with graphic patterns – again include some real eye-catchers (such as the ripped surface finish Solidale, or the Patchwork pattern). There is, in addition, more than 80 wood decors, categorised by Pfleiderer into Nordic, natural, dark and reddish woods, as well as waste wood decors and woods with black and white effects. Aged woods with strong grains and signs of weathering are conspicuously well represented, with a total of 17 variants. 01905 793550 s.parsons@ostermann.eu www.ostermann.eu

Overhead wall cabinets are still one of the most popular storage solutions in the kitchen. With Kinvaro, the Grass portfolio offers a range of different flap-lift mechanisms. This has been extended with the addition of Kinvaro T-Slim.

Kinvaro T-Slim – a new dimension of invisibility The motto is ‘Super. Slim. T-Slim.’ Kinvaro T-Slim is the thinnest, most efficient fitting ever developed by Grass. It combines purist looks with outstanding durability and the art of perfect movement in a unique way, and in 2020 was honoured with both the Red Dot Design Award and the German Design Award. Reduction is what it is all about. “If less is more, then maybe nothing is everything.” This quote by pioneering architect Rem Koolhaas inspired the development of Kinvaro T-Slim. The new flap-lift mechanism makes the dream of invisible fittings come true – and will therefore provide furniture designers all over the world with inspiration. “We have been a furniture industry pioneer for over 70 years,” says Grass flap-lift mechanism product manager, Harald Küper. “With Kinvaro T-Slim, we are adding a new chapter to our innovation history. After the first-ever concealed hinge or the invention of the double wall drawer, we have now developed a new dimension of invisibility with Kinvaro T-Slim.” Kinvaro T-Slim blends into the furniture almost invisibly, thereby unlocking completely new possibilities for overhead wall cabinets in

response to the current trend. Particularly wide, rather than tall, storage Grass solutions with liftup flaps are currently undergoing a renaissance. Whether fitted at eye level directly above the kitchen worktop, sink or cooker, above a desk or the television in the living room, or next to the mirror in the bathroom – overhead wall cabinets with flaps are an essential design feature in modern interiors. A movement mechanism that does not distract from the design The challenge here is obvious, as every technical detail is visible on a piece of furniture fitted at eye level. This fact prompted the development of Kinvaro T-Slim. Grass’ engineers have managed to reduce the complex mechanism of a lift-up fitting down to an overall size of 12mm. This minimal size provides furniture designers with maximum flexibility. Anything is possible, from a minimum side wall thickness of 16mm upwards. In material terms, there are hardly any limitations – wood can just as easily be used as MDF, and Kinvaro T-Slim’s effect on the furniture’s aesthetics really comes into its own on glass front flaps with aluminium frames. The fitting becomes one with the furniture. “The best movement mechanisms distinguish themselves by the fact that they give precedence to the design of the furniture they have been fitted to,” says Grass flap-lift mechanism product manager, Harald Klüh. “Kinvaro T-Slim perfectly exemplifies this philosophy.” Besides the obvious aesthetic bonus, this reduction in size offers another advantage – the flap lift-up mechanism takes up very little room, so the available storage space can therefore be used to its full potential. The Kinvaro T-Slim flap lift-up mechanism joints are mechanical masterpieces made of nickelplated steel. Moving Kinvaro T-Slim’s five-part jointed hinge arms reveals a fascinating display of well-co-ordinated technical sensuality – nothing seems to be left to chance.

The precise interaction of the matte shiny leverage elements follows a cleverly choreographed sequence of forces – apparently designed to defy the laws of physics. This effortlessness is also transferred to the user – the cabinet front is so easy to move that it appears to be lifted up by an invisible force. The soft-close technology, already proven millions of times over, ensures an elegant, gently dampened closing movement, a comfort feature that is particularly important on overhead wall cabinets. With an opening angle of 107°, the flap opens well beyond the user’s area of movement – conveniently, it can therefore stay open without getting in the way. It comes with an integrated opening angle limiting stay that prevents the front from being lifted up too high on overhead wall cabinets that are mounted directly below the ceiling. It can also be equipped with Tipmatic, for handleless cabinet versions. A wider range of fitting possibilities When it comes to the fitting options, the latest Grass product offers several possibilities. Kinvaro T-Slim can either be inset or overlaid and screwed on, the most commonly used alternative in the industry. The design of this fitting version is also impressively slim and space-saving. No tools are needed to fit and remove the two-part covering pelmet. The flap-lift system can therefore also be adjusted after it has been fitted, if necessary. It is attached to the front with a clip, a solution that is as elegant as it is simple. The fully adjustable spring tension can be adjusted from the front – to ensure that the fronts move easily and elegantly. Kinvaro T-Slim is also available in a choice of design versions – Grass offers the mechanism in its standard colours, Ice, Stone and Silver. A paintable covering pelmet is also available – it can simply be painted to match the body finish. www.grass.eu

Häfele UK has launched a new drawer range which offers universal functionality to meet the needs of KBB manufacturers, installers and end users.

Häfele UK launches universal drawer range to market The Matrix Box range is suitable for applications in kitchens, bedrooms, bathrooms and home offices, as well as commercial and industrial environments. The range is available in three product lines – Matrix Box P, Matrix Box S and Matrix Box A. Each features a premium soft-close extension runner at the heart of the system, and is available in a variety of colours. Matrix Box P is available in white, grey, silver, anthracite and bronze, while Matrix Box S and Matrix Box A are available in white, grey and anthracite. Matrix Box P is suitable for highly demanding purposes, and offers a wealth of choices including locking, push-to-open, tower and sink drawer options. It is widely utilised for internal drawer stacks, as well as pan drawers with rectangular or round rails. This system boasts added functionality, such as over-extension runner options and 35 and 50kg weight capacities, and is also the only Matrix Box line that can be delivered preassembled with a rear panel and base. Matrix Box S comes in a standard height of 84mm, with rectangular rails for deeper-pan drawers and a 35kg fully extended weight capacity. Matrix Box S also benefits from an

integrated soft-closing mechanism, and can be comfortably accessed even in small spaces thanks to the internal adjustment system on the inside of the drawer, combining performance with high value. Offering elegant and streamlined design, Matrix Box A accommodates the increasing demand for thin-walled drawer systems. It offers three differing drawer side heights – 89, 128 and 175mm – and a significant load-bearing capacity of 30kg. It presents more usable space within the drawer due to its slim design, has a push-to-open option and offers a 4D toolless adjustment and removal dynamic. Both Matrix Box S and Matrix Box A are backed by Häfele’s 20-year guarantee, while Matrix Box P benefits from a 25-year guarantee. Justin Crofts, category manager for furniture construction at Häfele UK, says: “Installers are facing increased demand to deliver customer designs faster while maintaining high levels of quality or functionality. Additionally, as the linear design of kitchens remains popular, consumers are expecting more from their drawer systems as standard, with a soft-close finish now seen as a basic commodity.

“Matrix Box has been designed to meet both these needs. The installer is empowered to complete their projects more effectively, while the end user is presented with a drawer system which looks fantastic, suits their chosen style and performs to the highest Häfele quality standards. “In Matrix Box P, we have a premium system which offers the pinnacle in performance, style and substance. Meanwhile, Matrix Box S and Matrix Box A provide an entry-level system which, though more cost-effective, doesn’t compromise on quality. “All the Matrix drawer products – which complement both our Häfele soft-close hinges, and newly launched compact Free space flap fitting – are designed to support the industry in its choice of drawer options (all with a Hafele lifetime guarantee) as it starts to move forward from the impact of the pandemic. “In Matrix Box, we have designed a product solution for every need, every application and every requirement. We are excited to see how the Matrix Box systems shake up kitchen installation for the better.” www.hafele.co.uk

FIT Show event director Nickie West

FIT Show’s September 2021 showcase is receiving record levels of interest from exhibitors, in direct correlation with the surge in demand that installers have received from homeowners throughout the pandemic. With the UK population spending more time than ever in their homes during lockdown, homeowners have been redirected savings, such as holiday funds, into making improvements around the home. This has resulted in the unprecedented volume of enquiries, and a huge appetite for new and innovative products. There has been a surge in demand from homeowners specifically seeking sustainable home improvement solutions. From traditional timber windows, internal doors and balustrades through to complementary outdoor timber products such as decking, fencing, garden rooms and office spaces. This, coupled with the fact that there has not been a dedicated trade show for this sector since the last FIT Show outing in 2019, all point to a very successful

event later this year. At FIT Show 2019, over 1500 of the 10,000 visitors came to the show specifically seeking timber products. This figure is expected to increase significantly for FIT Show 2021 with the British Woodworking Federation (BWF) and THE Wood Window Alliance (WWA) both set to have a presence at the event. Timber brands such as Hormann, who will showcase timber doorsets, Internorm, Metsa Wood UK and Solidcor are just some of the brands set to join the FIT Show 21 timber-lineup. Speaking about the growth of timber at FIT Show, event director Nickie West said: “After an extended period of restricted face-to-face business, and with no industry platform since 2019, we are more excited about our next event than ever. We understand that world events over the last 12-18 months have proven extremely challenging, but have been encouraged by the positive impact that this has had on the UK home improvement sector.

‘Demand for timber and other sustainable products in the home continues to grow and we are committed to ensuring that this is sufficiently reflected at FIT Show 2021’ “Demand for timber and other sustainable products in the home continues to grow and we are committed to ensuring that this is sufficiently reflected at FIT Show 2021. We are working closely with the key timber trade bodies and associations, and are working hard to connect manufacturers and suppliers of these products with our FIT Show audience when we return in September. I’d urge any timber brands who are looking to connect with the installer market to get in touch.” FIT Show exhibitors will be supported with a whole host of new features in September. This will include a brand new Timber Trail in conjunction with Wood Window Alliance and its members. Brands are also invited to showcase brand new products as part of FIT Show’s New Products Trail designed to take visitors straight to the products that are most relevant to them, such as balustrades and internal doors.

Alongside the unprecedented surge in demand from homeowners for home improvements in general, outdoor living enhancements have seen a massive 64% increase in demand. To reflect this, FIT Show organisers have developed a brand new Outdoor Living feature which will showcase everything from sun rooms and garden rooms through to conservatories and canopies, decking and fencing, awnings, gates and other associated

outdoor home improvement products. The new Outdoor Living feature will be clearly marketed to all FIT Show visitors both pre and during the show. This will include a new, dedicated Outdoor Living trail, sponsored by the Belgian trendsetter in ventilation, blinds, terrace roofs and wall covering; Renson. Evan Francis, Renson UK marketing and communications manager said: “FIT Show connects us with all the right people in one place. It’s the place to be for both us as a brand, and for our industry. We will be utilising FIT Show 2021 as a platform to present not only our ventilation and sun protection solutions, but also our outdoor living solutions. Visitors can expect to see how we create healthy spaces through our range of innovative solutions. The timing couldn’t be better.” FIT Show has evolved since its 2013 inception and has broadened its proposition to become much more than a windows and doors event. Alongside the show’s core UPVC, aluminium, timber, machinery and hardware lineup, organisers have introduced Visit Glass; a dedicated show-within-a-show with flat glass and processing machinery on display. This has helped to broaden the appeal of FIT Show and put it on the radar of new audiences such as architects, specifiers and the fit out sector. If you are a manufacturer or supplier of timber products for the home, FIT Show is the most cost effective platform to connect with trade customers en masse. According to statistics from the Association of Exhibition Organisers, it costs 22% less to contact a potential buyer at a show than through traditional marketing channels. Over 90% of trade show attendees plan to purchase in the next 12-15 months of visiting a show and 86% of exhibition attendees have not been seen before by your sales force. FIT Show walk on stand packages are available from just £3000 and there is still time for brands to sign up to exhibit.Enquire about exhibiting today. 07572 623457 freya@fitshow.co.uk www.fitshow.co.uk

Established in 1998 by owner and managing director Simon Walker, award-winning SPS Timber Windows is a reputable specialist in the design, manufacture, installation and finishing of premium quality, energy-efficient, bespoke timber windows and doors, notably BFRC A-rated Accoya wood box sash windows and casement windows, French doors, single exterior doors and folding sliding doors.

SPS turn to Soukup to speed up production to meet increasing demand SPS Timber Windows is endorsed by Which?, is FENSA certified, BFRC authorised, with our windows having been awarded an A-rating for its thermal energy performance and is BWFapproved and Trustmark accredited. The company’s dedicated team of 27 includes very experienced, highly multi-skilled designers, joiners, carpenters, installers, decorators and administrative personnel whose common goal is

to deliver excellence. “Our customers, primarily in London and Surrey, are very discerning,” explains Simon. “Quality, longevity and authenticity are of paramount importance; they are keen to maintain or restore the original characteristics of their period properties and the vast majority of our customers, whether owners of new or period properties, also have a strong environmental awareness. “Timber is the preferred choice for their windows and doors and our bespoke service, our ability to make to individual requirements, to replicate the designs and features of original installations with all the benefits of modern specifications, offers the ultimate appeal. Improved energy efficiency, noise reduction, security and safety “Our windows and doors not only serve to aesthetically enhance and add value to our customers’ properties and to prolong their original characteristics, but they also significantly improve them for modern living, with greatly improved energy efficiency, noise reduction, security and safety. “We continue to experience a complete volte-face in property owners’ perceptions of timber windows and doors. Certainly for SPS and our customers, long gone are the days of Examples of SPS Timber Windows completed installations

rotting, high maintenance wooden structures and a preference for plastic reproductions,” says Simon. “Accoya wood has raised the standards of reliability and performance for timber windows and doors. This premium timber, with Class 1 durability, is guaranteed against rot for 50 years. Combined with our advanced, low maintenance microporous paint system, our Accoya wood windows and doors will last for many, many years. SPS Timber Windows was one of the first UK manufacturers to use Accoya wood and continue to use it as the best timber available. High quality, traditionally crafted windows and doors “Our windows and doors are individually made, to exacting standards, in our London workshops and are installed and fully finished by our highly skilled craftsmen, installers and decorators. “High performance double-glazing, high security locking systems, draught sealing, our advanced, low maintenance microporous paint system and the best timber available add optimum performance and durability to authentically reproduced designs. “We are a very well-established, experienced, trusted business, offering a bespoke service. Our customers also appreciate the fact that we offer a comprehensive service, from initial consultation to fully completed installation, and that we manufacture locally. We have a Wimbledon-based showroom, where customers

are very welcome to discuss their requirements and view sample windows, doors, glass, fittings. Great products in high demand “Demand for our bespoke Accoya wood windows and doors continues to be very high,” says Simon, “such demand is greatly valued and, as part of our policy of continuous improvement, it is vital that improvements continue to be made to enable us to keep up with the demand,” explains Simon. Having already outgrown two premises, SPS was becoming a victim of its own success and needed to find efficiency in the production process as its set-up of using spindle moulders, tenoners and all the traditional joinery techniques and processes had become a concern. “Whilst the manual input of our highly skilled staff continues to be so very important for the production of our traditionally-made windows and doors, the need to meet the increasing demand for our windows and doors and to speed up production has necessitated the acquisition of additional state-of-the-art machinery. Efficiency needed to be improved “We carried out a lot of research as to which

machine would be best for our purposes,” Simon explains, “we decided on the Crafter as this machine offered everything we needed. We made the right choice! Jaroslav Soukup’s extensive experience, advice and assistance were invaluable. “The Crafter has enabled us to further improve the performance of our latest design of traditional box sash windows which have been awarded an A-rating by the BFRC (British Fenestration Rating Council). “The whole process, from our initial enquiry with Ian Brown through to delivery, commissioning and training, has been excellent. “Soukup arranged a demonstration and training in their modern facility in Prague for

our workshop and installations managers, Eric Frimpong and Richard Fitch. “The whole team at Soukup has been extremely helpful and has quickly assisted with any questions. The Crafter machine enables us to produce windows and doors to an excellent quality with greatly improved efficiency. Increasing production capacity “Producing each window takes less than half the time it took previously. Eric Frimpong, our workshop manager, is very impressed with the machine and with how much it has helped to increase our production capacity. We no longer require the older spindle moulders and tenoners and selling these has enabled us to free up some much-needed space. “I, Simon Walker, am full of praise for the Soukup Crafter. We are very pleased with the investment we made in the Crafter and tooling and would highly recommend IWM and the Crafter machine. It is doing everything we had hoped it would do and more. Our expectations have been exceeded. “Ian Brown will be our first port of call for any new machines we’ll be investing in to further improve our efficiency and productivity.” www.iwmachines.co.uk www.spstimberwindows.co.uk

Easy investment decision helps company close doors on waste disposal and heating costs

A Lancashire joinery company has purchased another woodwaste heater from Wood Waste Technology to save more money on its operating costs. Fern Doors, based in Preston, has manufactured high-quality kitchen and bedroom doors for fitted furniture manufacturers since 1998. When the business added a new factory on the same site as its existing two factory units, the directors did not hesitate to get in touch with Wood Waste Technology to order a new woodwaste heater. As the new factory had no heating, the business purchased another WT15 for that building, to utilise the waste timber and board product that is generated daily to reduce the expenditure on heating and waste disposal. Claire Phillipson, financial director at Fern Doors, says: “Having already purchased woodwaste heaters from Wood Waste Technology before, and experiencing how good the products and service are, it was an easy investment decision to make. The heaters are great at keeping the factory warm and are easy to use. From a financial perspective, they’re a great investment with a good payback, as they save us a fortune on heating

and waste disposal.” MD of Wood Waste Technology, Kurt Cockroft, notes: “A number of our customers come back to purchase additional heaters for their business once they’ve experienced the benefits of having one. We’re delighted when it happens, because it’s a sign that we’re doing the right things to keep our customers happy, in terms of the products we make and the service we offer.” Wood Waste Technology’s years of expertise in woodwaste solutions have helped many companies reduce their waste disposal and heating costs. As well as offering site survey, design, manufacture, installation and ongoing maintenance for new units, the company also services all types of woodwaste heaters, and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK official distributor for Gross Apparatebau, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision-engineered shredders and briquetters, available in various size and specifications to suit all business applications. 01785 250400 www.woodwastetechnology.com www.grossuk.co.uk

A & G Toseland distributing for POR Micucci Italian recycling technology company POR Micucci System recently announced the appointment of A & G Toseland as its exclusive distributor and re-seller of its briquetting and shredding range of machinery for the UK and Irish markets. With more than 350 machines already operating in the UK and Ireland in a variety of industries, the Brescia-based company is prioritising the furniture and joinery sector for growth over the next 2-3 years.

A & G Toseland MD, George Toseland, explains: “Their equipment is particularly well suited to help small- to medium-sized businesses convert their woodwaste into either a usable internal fuel resource or a saleable product, giving customers the opportunity to produce wood briquettes for domestic use.” This is an area likely to see a big rise in demand following the announcements in the Government’s ‘Clean Air Strategy 2019’ regarding the banning of the burning and sale of wet wood, to be rolled out from 2021.

As part of POR Micucci’s new strategy for the UK and Irish markets, it has installed a demonstration briquetting machine at the premises of A & G Toseland in Kettering. “This will enable customers to trial their own material quickly and conveniently, so they are able to judge the potential of their own particular waste stream for conversion from a costly disposal problem into a valuable and saleable resource,” says George. 01536 414401 www.hygienilac.com
