COACHING STAFF
One of the most versatile players to come through the Grove City program in recent memory, Kristen Hughes-Cramer enters her second season as the Wolverines’ head softball coach. Hughes-Cramer aims to lead Grove City back to the elite of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference. She took over as head coach in 2015 after spending the previous five seasons as the Wolverines’ assistant coach. In her first season at the helm, Grove City posted a 16-13 overall record, which marked the program’s best season since 2004. Shortstop Kelsey Shirey earned the conference’s Player of the Year award, becoming the first Grove City player to receive that honor. Shirey led the conference in slugging percentage and on-base percentage while ranking second in batting average. Meanwhile, pitcher Erika Aughton earned Second Team All-PAC honors after compiling a 10-7 record and the league’s third-lowest earned run average, 1.93. As an assistant coach, Cramer worked with multiple aspects of the program, including outfield development, hitting instruction and defensive positioning. She earned four letters at Grove City from 2005 to 2008 while playing both in the infield and the outfield. She started 97 career games for the Wolverines and led the team in hitting as a junior with a .378 average. Cramer also led the team in runs, total bases and on-base percentage during that 2007 season, earning Second Team All-Presidents’ Athletic Conference honors for her efforts. She earned Dean’s List honors and also landed on the PAC Academic honor roll during her career. Cramer graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in Spanish in 2008 and completed her master’s degree in sports management at nearby Slippery Rock University in 2009. Cramer also serves as the assistant women’s basketball coach and as an assistant professor of exercise science and physical education. She lives with her husband, Mike, in their native Grove City.

SEASON PREVIEW The Grove City College softball team welcomes back nine letterwinners this season in preparation for the program’s 37th season of intercollegiate play. Two seniors, five juniors and a pair of sophomores comprise that versatile and talented nucleus for second-year head coach Kristen Hughes-Cramer. Grove City’s two seniors will likely hold down the corner spots in the outfield this year as Megan Lynskey returns in left field and Emily Rothbard is the frontrunner to fill the vacancy in right field. Lynskey is a three-year starter for Grove City in the outfield and is the Wolverines’ active career leader in several offensive categories. Rothbard also owns three letters and has seen time in the outfield and pitcher’s circle throughout her Grove City career. In center field, junior Madison Brubaker will look to take over as the starter after playing part-time in the outfield during her first two seasons. Two juniors are expected to handle the bulk of the pitching this season, Erika Aughton and Aimee Wootton. Aughton recorded 10 wins and a 1.93 earned run average in 2015, earning Second Team All-Presidents’ Athletic Conference recognition. Wootton posted a strong freshman season in 2014 before being sidelined by injury as a sophomore. She will team with Aughton to give Grove City a formidable 1-2 combination.
Junior Alaina Kunselman will be a key part of the Wolverine lineup this season, both at catcher and on the left side of the infield.
Aughton and Wootton are both expected to see time at first base when not pitching. Two other junior letterwinners will likely be key cogs in the Grove City infield this year. Versatile Alaina Kunselman will handle the bulk of the catching duties after playing third base extensively during her first two seasons. Fellow junior Casey Woodcock looks to take over at third after missing the 2015 season. Woodcock made nine starts as a rookie in 2014. Sophomore Breanna Lent will take over at shortstop while fellow sophomore Michaela Cashmer has the inside track at second base. Cashmer could also spell Kunselman behind the plate. A number of newcomers may also challenge for time this season.

this day of high pressure intercollegiate athletics, with academics at the center of each member’s philosophy. In 2012, the PAC Presidents’ Council added Carnegie Mellon University and Case Western Reserve University as affiliate members in the sport of football beginning with the 2014 season. The PAC crowns league champions and awards all-conference honors in its 21 championship sports. Head coaches determine all-PAC squads for all team sports, while in individual sports, such as cross country and tennis, all-PAC accolades are based upon performances at the conference championships. The PAC, which recently celebrated its 60th anniversary, annually awards its men’s and women’s All-Sports Trophies to the schools which perform best across the board in PAC competition. The Grove City women and Waynesburg men captured the 2014-15 Trophies. PRESIDENTS’ ATHLETIC CONFERENCE
The Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC), built on the basic belief that an athletic program is an integral part of college life, but not an entity in itself, looks back on sixty years of growth and ahead to years of continued academic and athletic excellence. Formally organized in 1955 by Western Reserve University, John Carroll University, Case Institute of Technology, and Wayne State University, the PAC was the result of a realization that college athletics, despite numerous virtues for the individual and the institution, were gradually becoming a financial and academic burden. If athletics were to be continued, action had to be taken to place the program on its proper level. This included the premise that benefits of participation should be provided to as many students as possible. First-year head coach Kristen Hughes-Cramer took over as head coach prior to the season and guided the veteran squad to a 16-13 overall mark, including an 8-10 record in Presidents’ Athletic Conference play. Senior shortstop Kelsey Shirey became the first player in program history to be named as the conference’s Player of the Year. Shirey led the conference in on-base percentage (.525) and slugging percentage (.835) while hitting .471. She also led Grove City with 40 hits, 10 doubles, six triples, three home runs and 27 runs batted in. Shirey also earned First Team All-PAC honors while sophomore pitcher Erika Aughton captured Second Team recognition and senior catcher Sarah Morris merited All-PAC Honorable Mention. Aughton finished third in the conference with a 1.93 earned run average. Her 10 wins marked the most for a Grove City pitcher in six years.
Senior catcher Sarah Morris earned Honorable Mention All-PAC after driving in 23 runs during the 2015 season.
Offensively, Aughton hit .308 and scored a teamhigh 24 runs. Morris hit .330 and drove in 23 runs while also working with Grove City’s relatively young pitching staff in 2015. Grove City remained in contention for a spot in the season-ending conference tournament until the final day of the regular season, when a loss to Thiel ended the Wolverine run. Throughout the conference season, Grove City secured numerous notable wins, including a home sweep April 18 of Westminster. The Wolverines also earned an extra-inning win at archrival Geneva 10 days prior. Following the season, sophomore third baseman Alaina Kunselman, freshman infielder Breanna Lent, senior second baseman Allison Rayburn, junior outfielder Emily Rothbard and Shirey all earned placement on the conference’s Academic Honor Roll.

Four Grove City softball standouts have been inducted into the College’s Athletic Hall of Fame.
Carla (Wetzel ’82) Patarini
Carla (Wetzel) Patarini competed in volleyball, basketball and softball, accumulating a Grove City-record 11 letters from 1978-82. She played on seven teams that won conference titles and six teams that qualified for postseason play. Women’s softball made its debut as a varsity sport at Grove City in 1980, during Wetzel’s sophomore year. Playing third base, she earned First Team All-Women’s Keystone Conference and team MVP honors after leading the team to an 8-2 record.
On the basketball court, Wetzel engineered the offense at point guard all four years. During her career, the Lady Wolverines secured four WKC titles and finished 66-12 overall. She graduated in 1982 with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. 2008 INDUCTEE
Tammy (Leonard ‘88) Hardy
The inaugural softball squad took the field in 1980 with Brandt at first base and batting cleanup. She led the team in runs batted in all three seasons and received All-Women’s Keystone Conference honors three times under head coach Don Lyle. She captained the team twice and led the conference in home runs and runs batted in as a senior. A strong post player for head coach Terry Ellis on the hardwood, Brandt helped the cagers post a 67-11 overall record and earn four WKC titles. In her junior season, the Wolverines qualified for the EAIAW Championship Tournament. In her senior season, Grove City played in the first NCAA Division III Championship Tournament. 2010 INDUCTEE
Michele (Kirin ‘90) Michael
A four-year starter in the infield for the Grove City softball team from 1985 to 1988, Tammy Leonard became one of the most decorated players in program history. Leonard started at shortstop and helped lead the Wolverines to their first two Presidents’ Athletic Conference titles in both 1986 and 1987.
A four-time First Team all-conference selection in softball, Michele Kirin rewrote Grove City College’s pitching record book during her career from 1987 to 1990. Kirin graduated as Grove City’s all-time leader with 44 pitching victories while also setting program records with 480 innings pitched, 260 strikeouts, 75 appearances, 67 complete games and a 2.58 ERA.
As a senior captain in 1988, the Leonard-led Wolverines placed second in the conference with an 8-2 league record while winning a single-season record 18 games.
She made an immediate impact as a freshman in 1987 by going 11-4 in the pitcher’s circle and helping lead Grove City to its first Presidents’ Athletic Conference title.
She led Grove City with a .400 batting average, earning First Team All-PAC recognition for the second consecutive season. Leonard also became the program’s initial First Team CoSIDA Academic All-American that spring.
As a sophomore, Kirin won a school record 16 games while helping the Wolverines set a program mark with 18 victories under head coach Don Lyle. The conference’s head softball coaches honored her as the league’s Most Valuable Pitcher that season. Her 16-5 record in 1988 remains the best by a Grove City pitcher.
The Uniontown, Ohio, native made an immediate impact at Grove City as she drove in a team-leading 23 runs as a freshman in 1985.
Kirin again earned Most Valuable Pitcher recognition in 1990 after helping Grove City capture the program’s second conference title in a four-year span. 2016 INDUCTEE

ABOUT
The beautifully landscaped campus of Grove City College stretches over 150 acres and includes 28 neo-Gothic buildings. It is considered one of the loveliest in the nation. While the College has changed to meet the needs of the society it serves, its basic philosophy has remained unchanged since its founding in 1876. It is a Christian, liberal arts institution, dedicated to the principle of providing the highest quality education at the lowest possible cost. Wishing to remain truly independent and to retain its distinctive qualities as a private school governed by private citizens (trustees), it is one of few colleges in the country that does not accept federal funds. Affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), but not narrowly denominational, the College believes that to be well-educated a student should be exposed to the central ideas of the Judeo-Christian tradition. Grove City College offers undergraduate degrees in liberal arts, sciences, engineering, business, and music and is distinguished as a national leader in education. Grove City’s programs in electrical and mechanical engineering are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission Board of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. The “big business school curriculum” prepares students for today’s global business reality. An extensive variety of internship opportunities are provided across the curriculum. Grove City College wants its students to be prepared in this age of mobile information technology. Each entering freshman receives a tablet computer which is his or hers to keep upon graduation with a four-year degree. This is part of the Information Technology Initiative, a total program integrating technology across the curriculum.

The College believes that its student body has a unique mix of talents and abilities. Its Career Services program helps students identify those key assets during the first year and then builds a four-year strategy to help them pursue a satisfying career. Personal counseling, professional speakers, databases, alumni contacts, summer internships, corporate visits, employer presentations and more are incorporated into the career preparation experience. Grove City follows the semester calendar plan, in addition to offering two-week sessions in January and May. Most of the 2,500 students live in separate men’s and women’s dormitories. The rest are local commuters or married students. A full program of cultural, professional, athletic and social activities is offered, including 19 intercollegiate varsity athletic teams. Grove City, a town of 8,100 people, is located 60 miles north of Pittsburgh. It is located near Interstates 79 and 80 and has a municipal airport.

ATHLETIC FACILITIES
All 21 of Grove City College’s intercollegiate varsity athletic teams utilize the College’s superior facilities for competition, practices and off-season training and conditioning. Grove City’s athletic facilities have undergone numerous renovations and improvements in recent years, with more upgrades scheduled in the immediate future. On lower campus, Robert E. Thorn Field is home to the College’s football and track and field teams. The College installed CSTurf at Robert E. Thorn Field. CSTurf is a synthetic playing surface that features polyethylene LSR grass fibers and a rubber infill system. The College also installed lights and resurfaced the 8-lane track around the field. Grove City also reconfigured its setup for track meets during these renovations. In 2011, the College installed a new stateof-the-art scoreboard and new bleachers on the visitors’ side at Thorn Field. These upgrades benefit the entire campus community as the complex is used by both the College’s club sports teams and its intramural program, along with the varsity teams. The track is also available for use by recreational walkers and joggers. The complex also features 10 all-weather tennis courts next to the stadium. Phillips Field House, located at the north end of the complex, features several locker rooms, an athletic training room, meeting rooms and coaches’ offices. It is used by the football, track and tennis programs throughout the academic year. The Physical Learning Center (PLC) houses the Grove City College Arena, home to the College’s basketball and volleyball programs. In summer 2012, the College renovated the Arena by installing new lighting and a new playing floor. In recent years, the Arena has also received new scoreboards and scorers’ tables.

In addition, the PLC features the James E. Longnecker Pool, one of the premier aquatic facilities in the region. Each year, Grove City hosts the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships at the state-of-the-art facility. In 2015, the College also hosted the Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III Championships at the James E. Longnecker Pool. The PLC also features a second pool, the Recreational Pool, which is used by members of the College community year-round. A fitness room featuring aerobic and Cybex equipment and a separate weight room with free and mechanized weights are also keystone areas of the facility. The PLC also features six racquetball/handball courts as well as two adjacent intramural rooms. The intramural rooms feature four basketball courts, four indoor tennis courts, four volleyball courts, an indoor track and two indoor jumping pits. The College installed new synthetic flooring and several new electronic scoreboards throughout the intramural rooms. The Physical Learning Center houses the athletic training room, locker rooms and offices for coaches and physical education faculty. The College recently constructed a new office suite for coaches and athletic administration, while also incorporating its Athletic Hall of Fame area. Grove City’s outdoor athletic facilities have also received numerous upgrades in recent years. The varsity soccer field, College Field, received a new press box during the summer of 2007. Meanwhile, Grove City’s baseball and softball facilities recently received major facelifts as new dugouts, new fencing and electronic scoreboards were installed on both fields.
