President’s Perspective Nobody told me I’d have to be writing articles as President. While I contemplated doing away with that requirement as my first order of business, I’ve decided to take a different approach.

I have some big shoes to fill as President of GCBAA and I cannot say thanks enough to those that have served on the board and in leadership roles ahead of me. I especially would like to thank Rick Boylan for his past two years of devotion as President of the GCBAA, for his dedication to the association’s vision for the future and for his personal friendship. I appreciate the opportunity to serve and look forward to the next two years working hand in hand with the board, staff and our allied associations to carry on the mission of GCBAA. In recent years, our leaders have stressed the need for the GCBAA to be a “member driven” organization. They have also emphasized the importance of promoting our ‘Buy from Within’ initiative. I could not agree more! I look forward to helping expand upon those goals. I also hope to continue strengthening our allied relationships. From the various seats I have held around the boardroom table, I have seen firsthand how these relationships have grown. Part of this is because of our support of allied initiatives, but more comes from the willingness of our membership, board, and staff to have an open-minded approach to working with all of the stakeholders that are part of the game of golf. I am excited to see these partnerships continue and I look forward to representing the organization at allied events. The late Jim Kirchdorfer Sr. once said that GCBAA should be anywhere golf is being talked about. I remember sitting on the board years ago when Justin mentioned this quote from an interview he had conducted with Jim. I remember thinking not only how right he was, but also how impossible that task would be to accomplish. Now I look back on that moment and realize, considering where golf is today, GCBAA has done a great job! GCBAA has flourished because of the support of our members, as well as support from our friends in the organization. Your association is more involved today with allied groups than at any other time in its 45 year history. When you step back and look at what we as an organization can do in the next two years— or even 45 years—we have a strong game plan to keep this organization nimble and effective. If we continue to be involved where golf is being talked about, continue to use our ‘Buy from Within’ model, keep membership healthy, which in turn supports the association, all while being a member driven organization that makes sure decisions made in the boardroom are a result of grassroots support from our membership, we can keep this organization growing. I personally became involved with GCBAA because of the late Bob Pinson. He strongly encouraged me to join GCBAA and get involved. I have never regretted his advice. Now I’d like to present each of you with a challenge: help me recruit one new member each time you read my quarterly President’s message. If a handful of you help bring in three or four new members each year, it will make a tremendous difference in the viability and influence of this organization.

Last but not least, special thanks to my fellow board members and to the GCBAA staff. We have the best team in Lincoln. They represent our group in a truly professional manner. I am extremely proud of the staff we have in place and look forward to working with them and each of you in the coming year. Scott Veazey
