BUILD A SAFETY NET AND A LEGACY Planning for your estate can be difficult.

After all, how can you predict what you will have available at the end of your life to leave to both family and for charitable contributions? GBU's new life insurance product, Secure Cash Advantage Single Premium Whole Life (SPWL) is a great option to help with this challenge. Secure Cash Advantage SPWL helps to ensure that you can give the maximum gift to your loved ones, to the charitable organization of your choice, or both.

When you purchase Secure Cash Advantage SPWL, you purchase a life insurance policy with a one-time payment of your choice and name your beneficiaries. You can work with your agent to discuss a desired end-value or to grow a current amount of funds that you may have set aside. Upon issuance, the policy's death benefit is immediately available to your beneficiaries should the worst happen, but will grow when your annual dividends are used to purchase additional guaranteed coverage. For the person writing or telling a story, self-esteem can be noticeably increased. It is an excellent practice for anyone who struggles with speaking up in school, at work or just in general. The teller’s mind digs deep and utilizes both the left and right sides of the brain for communication. The expressions conveyed by your mouth, face and hands make the story come to life. Whether it is a funny recollection or a terribly sad tale, people are moved to make emotional decisions based on what they are hearing. The sensory cortex of the brain becomes activated.

When people gather for a storytelling session, they tend to feel connected and less lonely or isolated. If you hear of someone’s ability to overcome a struggle it leaves you with hope and a sense of pride. Listeners are learners.

Teachers and lecturers often use storytelling to get a point across in a memorable and meaningful way. Listeners may experience an expansion in their vocabulary and a sense of connectedness to the people around them.

While listening to a story, you imagine the situation that is being portrayed and take in the sequences. Several days or even years later you use your memory to retell the story. Connecting with people through a tale can increase and build new bonds.

When recanting a story about a loved one who has passed on, it rekindles pleasant feelings and warm emotions.

When you think about storytelling what comes to mind? Do you imagine folks sitting around the campfire exchanging stories or perhaps a host of relatives poised around a dining room table sharing memories?

Storytelling is the activity of telling or writing a story. The idea itself is simple and could be considered mundane. However, a closer look at storytelling reveals that the act is essential for wellbeing, specifically for mental health.

Mother's Day & Father's Day Recipes Celebrate Mother's Day and Father's Day with a home-cooked meal. Grab an apron and enlist family members to help with meal preparation and cooking. Choose from either recipe below, and dinner is sure to be a hit!

Crab cakes & corn salsa

Grilled steak & asparagus

Crab cake ingredients

Ingredients

1 pound crabmeat 1 ½ tablespoons dry bread crumbs salt and pepper to taste 2 teaspoons Old Bay seasoning 1 egg 2 tablespoons mayonnaise 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard

Corn salad ingredients

1 package frozen sweet corn 1 pint cherry tomatoes 1 small red onion, diced 2 tablespoons chopped cilantro 2 tablespoons olive oil 3 tablespoons white wine vinegar salt and ground black pepper to taste 1 small container feta cheese

Steps

1. Preheat oven broiler.

2. Mix the crabmeat and dry ingredients together.

3. Beat the egg, add Dijon mustard and mayonnaise. Combine with other ingredients and fold them together. Form into patties and place on a lightly greased broiler pan or baking sheet.

4. Broil for 10 to 15 minutes, until lightly brown.

5. While the crab cakes are cooking, place the bag of frozen corn in the microwave. Cooking times are listed on the bag.

6. Drain the corn and allow to cool.

7. In a large bowl, mix the corn with the tomatoes, diced red onion, cilantro, olive oil, vinegar, salt, and pepper together.

8. Add feta cheese to salad just before serving.

9. Serve the parent of honor one crab cake and a large scoop of corn salad.

Steps

1. Prepare the steaks by trimming the outside fat. and then patting dry.

2. Season steaks with salt, pepper and garlic powder.

3. Prepare the asparagus by breaking the rough ends off.

4. In a shallow pan, toss the spears with olive oil, salt, pepper and garlic powder.

5. Pre-heat your grill on a high setting. When you're ready to cook the steaks and the asparagus, turn it down to medium heat, and brush the grill grates with olive oil.

6. Place the steaks and the asparagus spears directly on the grill. For the steak, cook 5-7 minutes on each side. (Leave it on the grill longer if you prefer your steak more well done). For the asparagus, turn every few minutes until lightly charred.

7. Turn off the grill and place the steaks on a plate. Let them rest for 5 minutes before serving with the asparagus.

Helping Thy Neighbor Do you grow your own vegetables?

If you're a gardener who'd like to help feed your neighbors, here are five vegetables that are easy to grow and keep growing!

1. Lettuces, Salad Mixes. Many types of lettuces are a great option for fresh salads all summer long.

2. Swiss Chard, Kale, Leafy Greens. These nutrient-dense greens grow quickly and easily.

3. Cucumbers. Vining cucumbers produce the most while bush cucumbers tend to produce slightly less fruit.

4. Tomatoes. Although you'll have to wait about 80 days to harvest, expect to harvest about 10 to 15 pounds of fruit per plant 5. Zucchini. These are best picked when eight inches long or smaller.

The need to help individuals and families combating hunger in the United States is real, especially so since the COVID-19 pandemic.

As gardeners, we can do our part by growing and donating vegetables from our home gardens.

Here are ways you can share your bounty: Local Food Banks. Contact local food banks in your area to find out if they accept fresh produce. Some food banks offer free pickup.

Shelters. Check with your local shelters, soup kitchens. Many of them run soley on donations and welcome fresh produce.

Meals for the Homebound. Contact local programs, such as Meals on Wheels.

Service Organizations. Outreach programs to help families in need are often organized by churches and youth organizations.

3 Ways To write a poem for mom A Haiku If your mom loves nature and the outdoors, a haiku is a great way to honor her.

This traditional Japanese form of poetry emphasizes nature. This poem doesn't rhyme. Instead it has a special rhythm. It has three lines; the first with five syllables, the second with seven syllables and the final line has five syllables.

A Shakespearean Sonnet What bigger way to honor your mom than with a Shakespearean sonnet?

This traditional poetry form has always been used to express great love, but only use this one if you are feeling creative. This poem is rather long with 14 lines that have a special rhyme and rhythm pattern.

The rhythm for a sonnet is called iambic pentameter, which means it has 5 down beats (it sort of sounds like a horse galloping). The rhyme pattern is special, too. The lines rhyme like this: ABAB, CDCD, EFEF, GG.

An acrostic poem can make a great gift for mom. These can often be done in an artistic way and are perfect for hanging on the wall!

This simple poem uses a word of significance (such as a person's name) as its base and the letters in the word become part of other words to describe that word.

My mother is the loveliest of all.

Her sunny smile will shine throughout the day.

Here arms will always catch me when I fall, and show me how she cares in every way..

At night she tucks me in before I sleep.

Her kisses bringing me such pleasant dreams of cozy tales told during snuggles deep and prancing horses dancing on sunbeams.

New scholarships are offered in four programs: Freshman (applicants to attend a four-year accredited college); Undergraduate (applicants already attending an accredited college) and Graduate (enrolling or currently seeking an advanced degree); and Two-Year (enrolling or currently in a vocational/technical school).

Scholarship applicants not awarded a GBU Foundation Scholarship are entered into a random drawing for a chance at being awarded one of a predetermined number of one-time $500 grants or Personal Giving Scholarships.

A scholarship applicant must be a GBU member to apply for the scholarship and remain a GBU member for the tenure of the scholarship. Members of all ages are eligible to apply.

HOW TO CAST A WIDE NET

when searching for scholarship and grant opportunities.

The thought of starting the inevitable search for scholarships may seem nothing short of exhausting as a first-year college applicant. While applying to your top five universities, you also have to think about how you're going to pay for them. However, upon graduation and right around the time your student loan payments start kicking in, you will be thanking yourself for casting a wide net and taking every monetary opportunity available to you.

SEARCHING IN PLACES YOU WOULD LEAST EXPECT

The truth is, you aren't going to find all of the opportunities available to you neatly presented in one place. To maximize your opportunity to score scholarships and grants, you have to consider the unlikely places they may be hiding.

One great benefit to applying for a scholarship or grant with small organizations like these is that the pool of applicants is much smaller than of a large organization, increasing your chances of obtaining a scholarship.

Great places to start your search include religious organizations like the church you belong to. Also, watch for potential opportunities offered by organizations and local businesses in your area.

Another unique place you may not have even considered is with your parent's employers. It is not uncommon for companies to provide scholarship opportunities to the children of their employees.

Once you seek out opportunities in these unexpected places, make sure you take advantage of the more common resources as well.

SEARCHING IN PLACES YOU WOULD EXPECT A great resource available to you is your high school guidance office. Make an appointment to learn about what opportunities they are aware of that you may not have heard about.

If you have already selected what university or trade school you plan to attend, you should contact them to obtain a list of scholarships opportunities they have available to their upcoming students.

Scholarships are also available to students in specific fields of study. Don't be afraid to do an internet search to see what opportunities are available to you in your field.

DON'T SHY AWAY FROM SMALL GRANTS AND SCHOLARSHIPS There are a few reasons why you shouldn't discredit small grants and scholarships.

First, every little bit counts. There is no rule saying that you can only apply for so many grants. So, a few small grants could end up being just as much financial assistance as one larger grant.

Second, many applicants don't bother applying for the smaller grants so your chance will be that much greater.

Work together with your child to create a workspace area.

Lay a piece of cardboard on a kitchen floor or hardwood floor. Place washable paints and paint brushes beside the piece of cardboard, and have your child sit beside it with socks removed.

Now the fun begins! Have your child dip a paint brush into a chosen paint color and start painting the bottom of their foot.

Next, press the painted foot onto the piece of paper so it makes a footprint with the paint.

Repeating with the other foot, make sure the new print is facing the opposite direction of the first one. The goal is to have the footprints look like butterfly wings.

Lastly, have your child write a sweet thank-you note to his or her teacher. This picture says, "Thank you, Ms. Chrissy, for helping me grow" and is signed by the artist.

District 45–Altoona, Pennsylvania Happy spring everyone! We wish all GBU members and their families a blessed Easter on April 17 and hope the Easter season finds you in good health.

The spring Pie Sale Fundraiser items to benefit Dreams Go On Therapeutic Riding Stable and the Miracle League of Blair County baseball organization came in April 9.

Thank you to the GBU Home Office for sponsoring the First Responders program again this year. Our district selected the Blair County Sheriff's K-9 unit to support in 2022. Member Eileen Schlect presented the $1,000 check from the Home office to Corporal Justin Bennett and K-9 officer Rik, a Belgium Malinois. Officer Rik is a military-trained police dog trained in the detection of explosive devices, patrol operations and human tracking. Officer Rik is the second K-9 officer.

The first Sheriff’s K-9 officer was K-9 officer Lily who started with the program in 2013 with her handler Sergeant R.J. Peo. She was also a military-trained police dog. The Home Office will be sending out a letter explaining the First Responder Program and how you can donate to Support the K-9 program.

Thank you to everyone that helped out at the Children’s Christmas Party. Everyone in attendance had a great time and was able to enjoy crafts, games, food and a visit with Santa.

Upcoming District Events The Summer Pie Sale Fundraiser starts on Wednesday, May 11 and benefits a local Relay For Life team and the Brian Morden Foundation (BMF). The goals of the BMF are to support local families, patients and staff of pediatric oncology units, childhood cancer research and provide educational scholarships to childhood cancer survivors. Orders are due to me by Monday, June 13 and come in on Saturday, June 25. Cinnamon rolls, snails and pumpkin rolls are available in addition to pies.

Monday, May 30 is Memorial Day. The tentatively scheduled activities are the Mass at St. Mary’s Church at 9 a.m. which is 37

District 45-Altoona, Pennsylvania, continued followed by a procession to St. Mary’s Cemetery; the Flag Raising Ceremony at the Unter Uns Club at noon; the Salute at the Wall That Heals at 1:30 p.m.; and the Ceremonies at Brush Mountain Sportsman’s Club at 3 p.m. Check out the local papers for other events being held in the Blair County area.

Flag Day Ceremonies are scheduled for Tuesday, June 14 at the Downtown Altoona Heritage Plaza starting at noon. Flag Day is not an official federal holiday but keep in mind what the colors of the flag represent to all of us. The white represents liberty, the red represents bravery and the blue represents justice. Come out and join us as we celebrate the red, white and blue.

Save the Date! Our annual District Picnic will be held on Friday, August 19 at the Swiss Club of Altoona, located at 1219 Harrison Ave. in Altoona. Doors open at 5 p.m. An evening of good food, fun and fellowship is planned. More information to come in the summer Reporter article.

We continue our GBU Cares project as we collect personal hygiene items to donate to the local shelters and the Shriners Hospital for Children. Motel-size or full-size bottles of shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, etc. are greatly appreciated.

The District In Action program was discussed at the January meeting. It was decided to support Manheim Township Fire Rescue. The Home Office sent them a check for $1,000 and will match any donations we get. We also decided that at all upcoming meetings, a $2 donation will be collected for food and beverages to help keep down costs of future events.

Our first-ever district Bingo fundraiser on January 29 had a good crowd of 31 people. There was a bunch of cash given away as well as some great prizes! We will discuss the possibility of having another bingo in the near future.

Please join us at our monthly meetings. They are held at 6 p.m. on the second Wednesday of the month at the Unter Uns Club located at Van Buren Ave and 14th Street in Altoona. There are NO meetings in January, July, November or December. (Your officers will be having officers’ meetings instead to plan for upcoming activities.) Come, learn, support and get involved in the fraternal activities, and join us for fun and refreshments.

To begin, there were a few misprints in the last article. Bingo was January 29 and Bowling was moved to February 26. Also, Elizabeth (Liz) Fisher is vice president. Christine Bossert politely declined nomination before our Christmas Party.

At our Christmas Party, people who attended were asked to bring an item for the Humane League of Lancaster. Over $300 in pet items was donated to the Humane League on December 8. Let’s keep up the good work on that!

District 146-Johnstown, Pennsylvania Greetings from District 146!

District 536-Lafayette, Indiana Flowers will be springing up soon and temperatures will be too!!!

For the 2022 District In Action Project we selected Sandyvale Memorial Gardens and Conservancy. Sandyvale Memorial Gardens is a lush haven of open and inviting green space that links more than 200 years of Johnstown’s history with 21st-century education, recreation, community service and arts opportunities. Anchored by a greenhouse and conservatory, indoor and outdoor classroom areas and an open-air performance venue, the Garden celebrates the passion and foresight of those who were once buried here. They were American Revolution and Civil War, abolitionists who led freedom seekers through the Underground Railroad, determined pioneers who settled 19th century Johnstown, founding fathers and first families and immigrants who followed to fuel the nation’s industrial revolution.

We met for breakfast/lunch at a local restaurant in October. It was nice to catch up with everyone’s news and plans for the upcoming holidays.

I personally talked with Angie Farmer-Gerber, our former district president for several years. She said she looks forward to reading The Reporter each time and loves to see what all the districts are doing She has been residing in Florida since she retired as a district officer. She enjoys the warmer weather and is very active in her church and other volunteer activities.

District Vice President Jack Orris presented the check to Sandyvale representative Ronald Kabo at our district meeting.

Mr. Kabo shared details about Sandyvale, including that the vegetables grown in the greenhouse are donated to food pantries. The district will donate funds to purchase a large American flag for their Memorial Day Celebration.

As in the past, the district officers come together and offer helping hands to needed projects in the clubroom as a Thank You for use of the meeting room. The date of this project will be determined after the shutdown of the clubroom for the mandatory sewer project.

Happy Mother’s Day! Do something special for your mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, wife or—if possible—all of them. But let’s not forget to do the same on Sunday, June 19.

Happy Father’s Day! Stay safe. Let’s continue to get this pandemic under control.

Thanksgiving was celebrated with lunch at our local Cracker Barrel restaurant We had a good group and, of course, it is always fun to visit the gift shop on the way out!

We miss the days when we had big crowds at our Sunday meetings on Sundays, but we are trying our best to continue our smaller groups now and just "keep on keepin’ on." GBU is a wonderful organization, and we are happy to be a part of it.

We always look forward to a warm and sunny spring, and we welcome back our snowbirds!

For any member that has been feeling ill or is recovering from an operation, we send you wishes for a speedy recovery and hope you feel better soon. Please let one of our officers know if you are ill or recovering from surgery, so we can send you well wishes from the Sunshine Committee!

In November, Hans Rauer installed the officers for 2022 following our monthly meeting.

“We’re grateful for all the ways GBU contributes to our community, from Thanksgiving turkeys to volunteering to monetary donations,” commented Development Manager Alexa Wutt at Peace Neighborhood.

GBU understands that the need for support is still great, therefore the Home Office is continuing the District in Action program to offer each district the opportunity to receive a $1,000 donation to a first responder of our choice in the local area. For this year’s program, our district selected to support the Hope Clinic of Ypsilanti, Michigan. The Hope Clinic received a check from the GBU Home Office on behalf of District 630-Ann Arbor in recognition of the services that it provides the community, especially during this COVID-19 pandemic.

GBU will mail a fundraising request to all GBU members within a certain radius of Peace Neighborhood and match up to $2,500 of any additional donations collected.

Our Community Outreach Program resumed in January with monthly cooking for the after-school program at Peace Neighborhood Center. District 684–Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania I hope the first few months of 2022 treated everyone well!

Our district ended 2021 with our annual Breakfast with Santa at South Hills Country Club with over 100 people in attendance.

Mrs. Claus accompanied Santa this year and had the children captivated with her storytelling. It was a wonderful way to kick off the holiday season.

Our district was very happy to make charitable donations to B-W School District Christmas Angel Program, Trucks for Maddox Charitable Trust, Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank, KDKA TV Turkey Fund, South Park Meals on Wheels, Cloverleaf Food Bank and the Michael J. Fox Foundation/Parkinson Disease.

District 815–Dayton, Ohio

Participating in the 2022 Districts in Action program, our district chose to support the Brentwood Volunteer Fire Department and presented it with a $1,000 check.

Our officers met by way of a Zoom meeting in January to set up our events calendar, at which time we scheduled a February meeting to finalize some of the events and meetings. Our first general meeting was March 24 at Frisch’s in Caste Village.

Saturday, May 7 is our Kentucky Derby Night at The Yard in the Galleria. Members will receive a mailing with details.

We hope to see some new members at our meetings and events!

District 707–Grand Rapids, Michigan District 707 members went on a Bus Trip to Shipshewana, Indiana, on December 18, 2021. Retelling the Greatest Story Ever Told, the production of The Glory and Majesty of Christmas focused on the true meaning of Christmas. With the costumes and stunning performances, the story comes to life!

It was a grand day trip and a wonderful event to end the year.

We started a new schedule for our February and March meetings this year. Sunday meetings at 2 pm at St. Casimir’s hall in the wintery months are being tried to encourage more of our members to attend monthly meetings. Hopefully, more members were able to join us on February 27 and March 27 for the fun and to enjoy bingo and a light lunch following each meeting.

In April we resume our usual meeting schedule which is the fourth Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m. at St. Casimir’s hall.

Come join us to learn what we are doing and give us your ideas. Any questions, please call me. We want you there to help us keep our district strong and be a blessing to our community.

District 821-Sterling Heights, Michigan We had hoped 2022 would bring less worrying about COVID-19, though it still is on everyone’s mind. But we are resilient and do good things for each other.

On December 10, we had a nice Christmas Party with delicious food, poetry reading and singing, of course. We love our German Christmas songs. Heidi Wolff had brought the traditional Glühwein (Mulled Wine) for everyone to enjoy.

Singing Christmas songs at the Senior Living Center Waltenwood in Sterling Heights was much appreciated.

Many of us attended the Schwäbischer Männerchor (Swabian Mae Chorus) Christmas Concert on December 18 at the Carpathia Hall. It was a very festive evening.

The Historic Trinity Lutheran Church in downtown Detroit, celebrates a German Service every year on the fourth Sunday of Advent, with the annual participation of our GBU choir.

Members Making Difference Renate Rottelini and Gisele Genzer (maybe others I am not aware of yet) have started knitting and crocheting for the yearly Blanket Drive for the Children’s Hospital Detroit. Lore Kopp works her hours through GBU’s Making a Difference: One Hour at a Time program for the Macomb Center of the Performing Arts, after it opened for concerts again—January 29, 2022.

Five of our district members helped with the Carpathia Choir’s project of a day of baking Kipferl (croissants). This takes quite a few people, each had their own job, and the result was almost 400 fresh, delicious Kipferl ready to serve with the luncheon at the January 30 Card Party. It is always the choir’s specialty (and as advertised as such) that people look forward to.

District 2000-ULS

Fraternal Contributions Once again, we wish to thank GBU for its fraternal programs that provide financial assistance to charitable organizations.

District 2000 members have selected the following organizations to receive a GBU donation of $1,000: First Presbyterian Church of Duquesne, Duquesne, Pennsylvania; Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church Food Pantry, Cleveland, Ohio; Ohio Guidestone, Canton, Ohio; Be a Better Me Foundation, Canton, Ohio; and Shenango Meals on Wheels, Sharon, Pennsylvania.

District 2000 followed suit with another two contributions of $1,000 to Big Brothers Big Sisters, Greensburg, Pennsylvania, in memory of William Fennell and Zachary’s Mission, Greensburg, Pennsylvania.

Assembly 9 took advantage of our district’s Community Outreach Progam by offering financial support to the Lutheran Metropolitan Ministry in Cleveland, Ohio. Assembly President Deb Voldrich presents check to a representative of the Next Step Shelter for Youths.

Assembly Activities On December 13-15, Assembly 53, along with Shared Blessings Mission Store in Duquesne, Pennsylvania, distributed over 60 new coats, hats, gloves, scarves, toys and miscellaneous items for families and homes in need. Items were donated throughout the year and saved for this event. Over 30 families were invited to come and “shop” for new items for them to wrap for their kids for Christmas. All but five coats were distributed, and every toy was taken. This was the fifth year that we were able to provide such items because of the generosity of so many people.

Johann Krenzer and I are very thankful for the Matching Funds Drive. Our district decided to support the VFW Bruce Post 1146 with its building and property renovation. Thank you, Ursula Torp and Sieglinde Lico, for helping with the matching funds drive through 2021. It was a year-long involvement. The VFW was very thankful. For the last three years, Johann has been on the Ritual Team playing the bugle at a veteran’s funeral.

Due to COVID-19 concerns, Assembly 9 held a Drive-Thru Christmas Dinner on December 4 at Dr. Martin Luther Church in Brooklyn, Ohio. Members received a catered dinner of lemon chicken, mashed potatoes and mixed veggies along with Stroopwafel cookies for dessert.

November 28, 2021: District 684's Holiday Brunch In November, I made a special trip all the way across the street from the GBU Home Office to the South Hills Country Club to kick off the holiday season with members of District 684. Once again, my children joined me because I heard that Santa and Mrs. Claus would be joining us for lunch! The Clauses did not disappoint. Santa shared his jolly sense of humor, while Mrs. Claus shared stories about Santa, the elves and the reindeer at the North Pole. The club was decorated perfectly for the occasion, and I'm sure it was the backdrop for several holiday card photos sent this holiday season!

December 4, 2021: Matt Blistan's Career Celebration Early in December, friends old and new gathered to celebrate the 20-plus-year fraternal career of Matthew Blistan, Jr. There were many memories and stories shared from Matt's years of service with GBU. Matt was presented with a service award from Operation Troop Appreciation as thank you for being the founder of GBU's Operation Reach Out program. The program has brought much-needed supplies and good cheer to more than 40,000 military service members and veterans.

There was celebratory dancing with our very own National Sales Manager, Kirk Dietrich, as the DJ. I hope that Matt is reading this review of his celebration on a beach in the warm sunshine while many of us are still pulling out of the chilly temperatures of early spring.

Cheers, once again, Matt for all you've done for GBU and for fraternalism!

December 8, 2021: FSGP Year-End Meeting To round out my fraternal adventures for the year, I attended the Fraternal Societies of Greater Pittsburgh (FSGP) year-end meeting. The FSGP had chosen to support the Crabtree Kovacicek Veterans House, which is operated by the Washington City Mission in Washington, Pennsylvania. Judy Kovacicek told the story of her son Ryan's passion for his country and his service as a US Marine, which led to his tragic death by enemy fire in 2005 at the age of 22. The Veterans House is partially named in his honor.

During this meeting, GBU CEO Bill Hunt was installed as First Vice President of FSGP and will serve on FSGP's board in the coming year to help manage programs and operations of the organization.

HAPPY 130 BIRTHDAY TO GBU! TH

A look at how far we have come since 1892.

In 1992, GBU employee Julie Gaita worked closely with author Wilson J. Warren to put together pieces of history for a biography of GBU Financial Life's first 100 years. This April, GBU will celebrate its 130th year providing life insurance, annuities and member benefits to families throughout the United States. "So much has changed, even in the last 30 years," said Gaita.

GBU Financial Life was founded as the German Beneficial Union, one of many great fraternal benefit societies that formed between the close of the 19th century and the Civil War. This period marked a great time of growth for the Pittsburgh region as household names such as ALCOA, PPG, Heinz and D.L. Clark were just getting their starts, and immigrants were flooding into the city to begin their American dreams. Since many arrived poor and unsure what lay ahead of them, they looked to fellow countrymen who had come to the US before them for support. This support was the foundation of the fraternal benefit society system, which formed to help provide benefits and social interaction to fellow immigrants.

In 1935, the enactment of Social Security brought country-wide health and retirement benefits, but many still leaned on fraternal benefit societies for social activities, life insurance and retirement savings programs. Although GBU Financial Life was founded by a group of German-Americans, it quickly became a melting pot for all nationalities.

German, Lutheran, Slovak and Hungarian influences can still be seen throughout GBU's social gatherings, along with a welcoming spirit of community for anyone who is looking for a secure way to grow their savings.

Throughout its 130 years, GBU has weathered the storm of stock market panics, depressions, pandemics, wars and political change to quietly become one of the largest fraternal benefit societies in the country. "We have always been a nimble organization," said current GBU CEO William Hunt, "that's what has allowed us to be successful in times of change." GBU's conservative approach to investing has also led to a financially strong foundation, allowing it to grow over the years at an even, steady rate. "We pride ourselves in being real long-term stewards of our members’ money," said Hunt.

What can we expect from GBU Financial Life during its second century as a national fraternal organization?

GBU LIFE TEAMS UP WITH LOCAL ORGANIZATION, PAULINE JULIET, THROUGH GBU'S GIVE BACK GROUPS PROGRAM A little backstory on Pauline Juliet Pauline Juliet, Inc. was first started about eight years ago by Lauren O., a GBU member and Pittsburgh local. Pauline Juliet, Inc. is a grassroots, community-led organization in rural Uganda with a focus on the education and empowerment of women and girls.

Seizing the opportunity to maximize As an active GBU Life member, Lauren identified an opportunity to use the Give Back Groups program to help in her fundraising efforts. Pauline Juliet was having an end-of-year fundraiser with the goal of raising $8,000 to support its 2022 programs which includes its handwashing campaign. This campaign would supply 35,000 bars of soap and handwashing education to rural schools in Uganda.

Identifying what support was needed Lauren submitted a Give Back Groups Matching Funds application and a Marketing Support application. Since Lauren's Give Back Group included four other GBU members, Lauren had the opportunity to receive a match of up to $5,000 toward Pauline Juliet's end-of-year fundraiser.

Lauren worked with the GBU Life Marketing Department to plan out how GBU could help promote her fundraiser. A plan was made to feature Lauren's project in two GBU Life member emails, as well as feature it on several GBU Life social media platforms for the duration of the fundraiser.

The exciting results Lauren O., her team, donors and partners of Pauline Juilet had no problem raising over $5,000 during their end-of-year campaign which meant an additional $5,000 match from GBU Life. Great job, Lauren O. and team!

Notice of 2022 Election for GBU Board of Directors Board Election With the approval of the Delegates of the 36th National Convention by referendum ballot in 2020, changes were made to GBU’s National Bylaws to allow for a Direct Election of GBU’s Board of Directors. The new election process will be used for the first time this year. Ballots will be mailed at the beginning of August 2022 to all GBU adult members (as defined in Article IV, Section 1 of the Bylaws). Adult members will have the ability to vote by paper ballot via mail or electronic ballot online once they have received their ballot. Cumulative voting or voting by proxy is not permitted.

The Process and Term The GBU Board of Directors consists of seven (7) elected members and the Chief Executive Officer of the Society who is appointed by the Board. The elected members serve a term of four (4) years or until their successors are elected and qualified. In 2022, all elected Board seats will stand for election. The four (4) candidates receiving the highest number of votes will be elected to a four- (4-) year term office and the three (3) candidates receiving the next highest number of votes will be elected to a two- (2-) year term. GBU will conduct an election for the Board seats with terms expiring and standing for election every two (2) years beginning in 2024.

For 2022, all members of the Society seeking candidacy to the Board must submit their application request in writing online to: Office of the CEO boardcandidates@gbu.org All eligible applicants will constitute the slate of candidates.

Summary of Board Member Responsibilities The GBU Board of Directors is responsible for the effective governance of GBU Financial Life. Its primary objectives are to provide overall governance of the Society, establish and oversee policies and direction, as well as advise and assist management with the leadership and promotion of GBU in support of its mission, strategy and core values.

GBU Financial Life Bylaw Requirements as per Article VI, Section 1, To be eligible to be a candidate for or serve as an elected Director, all individuals must:

a. be a GBU adult member (as defined by Article IV, Section1 of the Bylaws) age 21 years or older and under the age of seventy (70) years on January 1 of the election year. b. not be: (1) a current employee, general agent, or agent of GBU; (2) a former employee, general agent, or agent of GBU unless three years have expired from the termination date of their employment or GBU agent contract; (3) a current corporate officer, field manager, sales agent, broker or director of any other life insurance company or fraternal benefit society, or (4) an immediate family member (parent, spouse, natural or adopted child, sibling) of any person in any of the prohibited categories enumerated above; c. be capable of assuming the responsibilities as outlined herein and as established by GBU from time to time and possess qualifications that reflect the complexity and magnitude of the business affairs of GBU as well as the desire to promote and support the fraternal benefit system within GBU. d. not have been removed from office for cause by action of the Board of Directors; e. have no criminal history other than matters determined insignificant by the Nominating Committee, such as a minor traffic violation; f. meet all other requirements under the law or established by resolution of the Board of Directors.

Additional Qualifications of Board Candidates A candidate for an elected Board seat must possess at least one of the following: - Bachelor’s degree or higher - Currently holds or has held a management level position for a minimum of ten (10) years - Owns a successful business for at least five (5 ) years - Currently is employed or has been employed in the insurance industry for a minimum of ten (10) years or has held an insurance certification for a minimum of ten (10) years except as specified in the eligibility requirements.

- Serves or has served on a professional Board for a minimum of ten (10) years Expectations of Board Members The following are the expectations and commitments of GBU Board members: - Dedication to and display of the values that are aligned with the mission of GBU Financial Life - Avoid any conflict of interest - Be available to prepare for and participate in GBU Financial Life Board meetings. Currently, the Board meets as an entire body six times per year. Board members also are assigned membership and participate in various committees of the Board throughout the year. Currently, the GBU Board has the following committees: Executive, Audit, Investment, Sales and Marketing, Fraternal and Compensation. Board meetings are conducted in person or via the use of any means of communication by which all participants may simultaneously communicate with each other during the meeting - Participate in the overall governance of the Society through expertise obtained in one or more of the following areas: accounting/finance, general business leadership/management, legal, investment management, sales,

marketing, risk management, human resources, civic leadership or fraternal operations -Become familiar with GBU Financial Life’s business and fraternal mission, insurance products, policies, procedures, finances, investment practices, service platform and fraternal operation -Display congeniality and a team atmosphere with other GBU Board members -The general time commitment of a GBU Financial Life Board member's duties is normally between 20-30 days annually -Board members are to be available either in person or electronically for any special meetings called by the Chair of the Board
