Experience Geographe Bay Wineries & Breweries
Wineries and
Breweries
Discover the Margaret River Wine Region One of the world’s premier wine regions, Margaret River’s Mediterranean style climate means vineyards are not affected by extreme summer and winter temperatures creating perfect growing conditions for a range of grape varieties. The region is perhaps best known for its Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, however varieties such as Shiraz and Semillon-Sauvignon Blanc blends have gained increasing attention in recent years. You can find out more about, the characteristics of the regions wines, with tours offering structured tastings and blending classes.
See the Seasons There is never a dull moment when it comes to growing grapes and making wine. As you make your way around the region, you will see vineyard teams hard at work. Autumn Harvest begins! White grapes are picked first in the cool of the evening, followed by red grapes. They are then transferred to the winery for processing. This is the busiest time of the year, with many vineyards and wineries working around the clock to produce the perfect drop.
Margaret River Wine Region
14 www.geographebay.com
Fermoy Estate
Winter The vine becomes dormant and the vineyard teams brave the weather to ensure each vine is pruned and ready for spring. The winery is still a hive of activity with winemakers skilfully blending wines in anticipation of bottling. Spring Buds begin to burst, bringing the vineyard to life and colour. The vines are monitored for disease and shoot thinning takes place, where necessary, to maintain optimum yield levels. It is at this time new releases are bottled ready for sale. Summer The ripening process begins during summer. The grape berries get much larger as sugar, flavour, tannin and colour development progresses. The vineyard teams monitor growth closely and prepare for vintage netting the vines as the fruit ripens to stop damage from birds and other pests.
Time to Taste There are over 120 wine producers in the region, most of which have Cellar Doors allowing you to taste their range of wines free of charge. There are five basic steps to follow when tasting wine, known as the “Five S’s”: See; Swirl; Sniff; Sip; and Savour. Don’t be afraid to ask the cellar door staff to take you through the tasting and explain the wine to you. If you are not sure where to start, or are looking for a safe and fun way to explore the wineries and breweries of the region, a number of tour companies offer full or half day winery and brewery tours with pick-up from your accommodation.
Don’t Forget the Beer
Go Behind the Scences
Dotted in amongst the vineyards are equally impressive boutique breweries producing hand-made traditional style brews with Indian, German and English influences. As well as the traditional lager, there are some more experimental styles to tantalise the tastebuds including chocolate and chilli beer!
One of the best ways to learn more about how wine is made is on a ‘Behind the Scenes’ tour of a working winery. A tour of the facilities will uncover the fascinating process of taking a grape from vine to wine.
For the location of wineries, breweries and tour companies in the region, refer to the map in the centre of this Guide.

Experience Geographe Bay Culture and Heritage
Journey Back in Time Settled in 1834, Busselton is one of the earliest settlements in Western Australia. Evidence of the town’s rich and colourful heritage can be seen as you make your way around the charming coastal town. St Mary’s Church Built by the early settlers in the 1840s this beautiful historic building on Queen Street is the oldest stone church in the state and is still a place of worship for the Busselton Community. Wander around the graveyard and read the inscriptions, on many of the settlers’ tombstones, which are still in their original state. Ballaarat Train On display in Victoria Square, the Ballaarat Engine was WA’s first steam locomotive and is the oldest surviving example of a steam locomotive built in Australia. Built in 1871 in Victoria, the Ballaarat was bought to WA to haul timber between Wonnerup and Yoganup until 1886, primarily for the construction of the Busselton Jetty. Busselton Museum & Old Butter Factory Housed in the town’s Old Butter Factory on Peel Terrace, the Busselton Museum is the largest museum outside of Perth. You can

Old Couthourse Built in 1854, the Old Courthouse complex was Busselton’s first centre for dispensing the law. The original building consisted of a courtroom, goal cells, post office, sergeant’s quarters and bond store. Today, the building is used for art classes, workshops and the ArtGeo Gallery, with the goal cells as a grim reminder of its past. Pioneer Cemetry The cemetery, which is situated on the corner of Marine Terrace and Stanley Street, has over 1000 graves of many of the district’s early settlers.
Busselton Jetty Extending almost two kilometres out over Geographe Bay, the heritage listed Busselton Jetty is the longest timber-piled jetty in the Southern Hemisphere. The jetty is currently undergoing a $27 million refurbishment and will be open Summer 2010/11.

Summer down south really is something special. Mornings beachside, swimming, surfing and diving and afternoons exploring, food, wine and galleries. Day 1: Soak up the sun, Geographe Bay • Summer “down south” means the beach! Spend the day on the shore, soaking up the sun, and splashing in the sea. • In the afternoon, pick out a spot on the grassy foreshore and enjoy a picnic overlooking the bay. • Finish the day with a twilight stroll along the Geographe Path. Day 2: Surf the waves, Yallingup • Get the thrill of riding a wave with a surf lesson that will teach you everything you need to know about getting in the surf while staying safe. Join a group lesson, or get private tutelage by local surfing legends. • Follow the locals’ lead and head back into Dunsborough for a bakery lunch. • After lunch, hire a bike or scooter and continue your exploration of the region. With world-class wineries, galleries, gourmet food producers and scenery, right on your doorstep, you’ll be spoilt for choice.
Geographe Path
Day 3: Discover life under the sea, Dunsborough • Today, discover life under the sea with a dive on the SWAN wreck off Dunsborough. The 113 metres long, decommissioned naval destroyer was purposely sunk and since then has become one of the most popular dive wreck sites in Australia. • If snorkelling is more your thing, why not hire a canoe or join a tour for the day. Tour companies can take you out into the pristine turquoise waters of Geographe Bay where you can snorkel and swim in protected coves. Day 4: Witness iron men and women in action, Busselton • See the spectacle of the region’s biggest event, the Ironman Western Australia Triathlon. Over 1300 competitors from around the world put their bodies to the test as they complete a 3.8km swim, 180km bike ride and 42.2km run on the first Sunday in December.

Experience the excitement of vintage! See grapes being harvested and wine being made as you tour the beautiful Margaret River Wine Region. Day 1: Play a round of golf, Geographe Bay • Autumn is an exciting time of the year in the region, with vintage in full swing by March. Immerse yourself in the action by staying on a vineyard. With three chalets nestled amongst natural forest at the back of their family owned and operated vineyard, Island Brook Estate (see page 41) is a great place to base yourself for this itinerary. Be sure to meander down to the cellar door and try their “Red Truck” range of boutique wines. • From here you are just a short drive away to an afternoon of golfing. Choose from the region’s serious championship level to fun short courses. Day 2: Learn about winemaking, Margaret River Wine Region • Today, learn more about the wine making process with a ‘Behind the Scenes’ tour of a working winery at Cape Mentelle (see page 53). Vintage is the perfect time of year to see the grape’s journey from vine to wine. Take your knowledge to the next level, with private wine tasting matched to a selection of delicious local produce.
Vintage
• If you are visting from 17 – 21 March, make sure you schedule a stop at the Margaret River Wine Region Festival where you will uncover a wealth of wine, food, art and cultural experiences. Day 3: Go fishing, Geographe Bay • The region offers plenty for the angler to do all year round, however March to May each year is the legendary “salmon run” that sees anglers, from far and wide, converge on Dunsborough for an assault of these brilliant sportfish. The clean, white beaches are interspersed with rocky outcrops, ideal places to sit in the sun and wait for the salmon schools to swim on through. The locals’ favourites include Castle Rock, Rocky Point and Sugarloaf Rock. • If the fish aren’t biting, then don’t despair! A stop at Squid Lips Gourmet Fish’n’Chips (see page 59) will mean that you don’t return home empty handed. Rated in the top 5 fish’n’chips in WA, you can’t leave without trying their addictive chilli squid and salt’n’pepper squid.

Winter is a wonderful time to see the region in a different light. Snuggle up by the fire with a glass of wine by night, and see nature at its dramatic best by day. Day 1: Indulge in some retail therapy, Dunsborough • Start the morning with a hearty breakfast and a locally roasted coffee, or hand crafted tea, in Dunsborough. The town is not only home to fantastic food, but also a vibrant range of boutique clothing and giftware stores. You can easily spend a morning (or more) perusing the stores for that “must-have” pair of shoes or gift for “the person who has everything”. • The region is also home to unique handcrafted, locally produced goods. A must-stop is the award-winning Natural Olive Oil Soap Factory (see page 52). A visit to the factory allows you to view the soap making process first-hand and sample the soaps, lotions, balms and massage oils. You can also enjoy a hosted tasting of their new Vasse Virgin range of extra virgin olive oils, table olives, tapenades, vinaigrettes and dukkahs. Day 2: Get back to nature, Yallingup • The best place to stay warm and dry during winter is Ngilgi Cave (see page 51).

Only a five minute drive from Yallingup, the cave maintains a constant temperature of 23 degrees celsius all year round. A semi-guided tour through the cave (departs every 30 minutes) showcases stunning stalactite, stalagmite, helictite and shawl formations. For the more adventurous, don a hard hat and miners light and descend into the parts of the cave not normally seen by the public (departs daily). • From here, make your way to Yallingup for a bite to eat and to watch the surfers at Yallingup mainbreak. • The dramatic natural environment is often inspiration for artists in the region. From photography to jewellery, the region is home to a number of galleries well worth a visit. Day 3: S pend a night with the stars, Busselton • Be sure to mark CinéfestOZ in your diary. The French-Australian film festival entertains people of all ages and takes place in August every year.

Judged one of the Top 10 walk trails in Australia by Australian Geographic, the Cape to Cape Track really is a must-do at this time of the year. For the more energetic, follow an expert guide on the Cape to Cave Nature Trail (see page 45) and learn more about the history, ecology and geography of the area (tours take 6 hours and depart

• Finish the day watching the sun melt into the ocean at Meelup Beach. Day 2: See whales and wildflowers, Geographe Bay • For an unforgettable experience, join a whale watching charter and get up close and personal with these gentle giants of the sea. The calm waters of Geographe Bay provide a protective haven for whales and their young, and privileged passengers have been fortunate to view feeding calves and to hear the ‘whale song’ on a still Spring day. Tours depart from Dunsborough (Naturaliste Charters and Nauticool) and Busselton (Legend Charters) daily between September and December. • This afternoon enjoy the peaceful bush surrounds of Ambergate Reserve. Wildflowers are ablaze in Spring, and with over 150 plant species recorded in the 70 hectare reserve, you are sure to uncover something special.
