ADVANTAGES OF FEEDING MILK REPLACER Biosecurity (reduced risk of transmission of infection, e.g. Johne’s disease, when compared to unpasteurised milk). Consistency of Composition (when compared to transition milk mixed from cows in different stages after calving and contributing to nutritional upsets). Labour Saving (on dairy farms with compact calving and especially if feeding can be automated). Lower Cost (if compared to saleable milk, and depending on the milk price).

All 3 products are underpinned by the following characteristics:

Performance

Excellent performance is guaranteed by carefully formulating a unique blend of highly digestible refined milk products. Quality raw material selection is essential for optimum performance.

High Quality Protein

The correct balance of proteins is ensured by formulating to exacting amino acid constraints. Lysine and Methionine levels are maximised for efficient live weight gains and calf health.

Energy Balance

A specialised blend of oil is used for maximum digestibility and nutrient uptake. The blend of energy sources used ensures that the calf gets the correct type and amount of energy required.

Essential Vitamin Health Factors

High levels of Vitamins A, D and E are included to optimise immune function. High levels of Vitamin E are also essential for muscle development.

Minerals & Trace Elements

Research has identified the positive effects of formulating a specific mineral and trace element balance. Selenium, Copper and Zinc are critical for enhanced performance and disease resistance.

Specialised Performance Enhancers & Heath Boosting Additives

Digest VO®, (a product of Techna®, France) is a combination of complex plant sugars and essential oils selected for their specific effects on gut microflora. Together with BioMos® they help protect against protazoal challenges. BioMos®, (a product of Alltech®), is a natural supplement proven to strengthen the health and immune systems of dairy and beef calves by targeting and binding bad bacteria. Gardion®, garlic essential oil improves general disease resistance and performance. Butyrate® helps to develop the calf’s metabolism, digestive and absorption system while encouraging early solid food intake. Yogurt Powder, directly adds lactic acid bacteria to the calf’s stomach. This lactic acidic bacteria reduces pH in the abomasum, making it a more hostile environment for scour causing bacteria such as E-Coli to thrive.

Uniformity & Consistency

GAIN Animal Nutrition Milk Replacers mix easily, producing an extremely creamy and palatable milk feed. They are free-flowing and easy to digest.

Flexibility

They are suitable for bucket, teat, ad-lib machine and computerised feeding systems.

Food Intake

Encourages early concentrate intake, early rumen development and successful early weaning.

Reliability

Stringent manufacturing and packaging standards, with guaranteed reliability. 4

Accurately weighing and mixing of Calf Milk Replacers is strongly advised as nutrient absorption is driven by the relativity of osmotic balance at either side of the gut wall. Temperature is important for solubility and also to stimulate the sucking reflex in young calves. Always follow instructions carefully. Introduce abruptly rather than mixing with cow’s milk. Long clean roughage and clean water should be available at all times. Introduce GAIN Startacalf from 7 days of age and GAIN Calf Crunch or GoldGrain Calf nuts can be fed when they are eating at least 250 grams/head/day. Weaning can take place when calves are consistently eating >1Kg/hd/day or 1.5Kgs if group fed. As a general rule calves should be twice their birth weight at weaning. 6

There is growing evidence that high growth rates in early life (600 to 800 g/d; achieved by feeding 750g to 900g CMR per day) promotes better health in calves and increased productivity in their adult life. To achieve lean tissue growth to that degree CMR must contain 23-26% crude protein. Glanbia have a well proven and well documented dairy heifer rearing programme.

Key principles of the heifer rearing programme: Feed efficiency is 5 times better in the first 2 months of life than it is when they are 1 year old. Our objective is to maximise growth during this phase. We target an average daily weight gain of 0.8Kgs/day from birth to service (@ 14 -15 months, circa 365Kgs).

KEY PRODUCT FEATURES

GAIN EASI-BEEF Calf Milk Replacer (20% Protein)

20% protein milk replacer suitable for high performance beef calf rearing systems. Maximum levels of quality milk products promote trouble-free performance with young calves. Can be introduced abruptly from 7 days of age. Ideally, do not mix with whole milk. Suitable for bucket, teat, ad-lib machine and computerised feeding systems. Butyrate® added for extra performance.

Reaching a first calving weight target at 24 months leads to greater lifetime performance, higher yields and higher fertility than heifers that calve later or reach their first calving target weight later.

Gardion® (Garlic oil) added to aid immunity and performance.

Calving at 24 months reduces the number of replacement heifers required on the farm. (See programme or contact your local Glanbia Business or Branch Manager).

Can be fed once-a-day from 21 days of age, mixed at 20% solids (200g makes 1L), 200g of powder plus 0.8litres of water makes 1litre of mixed calf milk replacer.

GLANBIA CALF REARING PROGRAMME The aim of commercial rearing systems is to; encourage and promote early rumen development, wean calves off liquid feed early and to maximise dry feed intake as early as possible.

Day 56

Milk Replacer + Concentrates + Forage + Water

Wean when eating >1.5Kg concentrates per day (1Kg individual pens)

General guidelines Colostrum should be fed for first 4 days at approx. 10% of bodyweight e.g. 4L/day/40Kg calf. Cow’s milk can be fed until 7 days of age, at 10% of bodyweight. Milk replacer can be introduced abruptly at 7 days of age. Bought-in calves should receive an electrolyte solution as a first feed. Milk replacer is best fed neat. Keep the level of any cows’ milk mixed with it low and consistent. Provide clean long roughage (preferably straw) and water to appetite at all times. Palatable fresh concentrate should be provided to appetite from 7 days of age until at least 2 weeks weaned. Wean only if eating >1.5Kg/day concentrate (or 1.0Kg in individual pen). Weaning weight should be double their birth weight. Concentrates can be limit-fed in two feeds per day from two weeks after weaning. To reach our target, heifers should calve at 24 months and be 90% of their mature weight. Average daily live weight gain should be 0.75Kg or greater from birth to calving. (Monitor with scales or weigh-band). Water and clean straw to appetite always (No silage or hay pre-weaning). Feed GAIN Startacalf 18% Muesli ad lib until they are eating >250g/day. Feed GAIN Goldgrain Calf 18% Nuts ad-lib, until at least 2 weeks post weaning. Use GAIN Wean ‘N’ Build 16% Nuts for calves at grass, and heifers on silage. 10
