FREDERIC VIKINGS FOOTBALL Vikings in a title fight with new conference

by Marty Seeger Leader staff writer FREDERIC – The Frederic Vikings ran away with the conference crown last season, and without question, they were one of the top five teams in the state in Division 7. This year’s road to the conference crown will take on new challenges in 2012 as the Vikings move into the Lakeland North Conference, filled with former teams of the Large Lakeland. With a school the size of Frederic going up Coach Belanger against schools twice their size, there’s no doubt that the Vikings are the little fish in a big pond. “It’ll be a tough season. It’ll be challenging. Nothing easy. It’ll be different than it has been the last few years, that’s for sure,” said Ken Belanger, who is coaching his 47th year of football, and FREDERIC VIKINGS FOOTBALL ROSTER

12th as head coach of the Vikings, proof that he is truly doing what he loves. “It’s so much fun. It’s exciting. Great kids. They make it interesting, that’s for sure,” Belanger added. The Vikings of 2012 put in another solid effort in the weight room over the summer, along with a summer agility and fitness program through help of the trainers from St. Croix Regional Medical Center. Players participated in the program on their own time, which shows the work ethic that continues each year with the Frederic football athletes. Frederic has a good number of athletes back from last season but lost two key defensive tackles and an inside linebacker to graduation. They’ll be looking to others to fight for those three spots to fill the void. “We’ve got both defensive ends back, couple linebackers and couple d-backs. So we got some back, never as many as

you’d like to have back but they’re doing a good job,” Belanger said. Senior Adam Chenal was a 1,000-yard rusher last season and will provide plenty of leadership for Frederic this season in the backfield, along with Peter Chenal. There’s also center Blain Clemons, right guard Brad Peterson, tight end Chris Schorn, and split end Ian Lexen. Senior guard David Crandell has also been solid so far this season. Adam Chenal, Clemons, Peterson and Lexen are team captains. There’s also a new face at quarterback this season in junior Jaryd Braden, who Belanger said has made big improvements from last season. He is replacing Blain Clemons

last year’s quarterback, Waylon Buck. “I’m just really pleased with how Jaryd has looked at quarterback. Leaps and bounds ahead of what he did last year. Done a great job getting ready,” Belanger said.

GRANTSBURG PIRATES FOOTBALL Pirates working with a new head coach this season

by Marty Seeger Leader staff writer GRANTSBURG – New Pirates head coach Adam Hale isn’t an unfamiliar face around the Grantsburg area as he’s spent the past two seasons as Grantsburg’s head girls basketball coach. Along with his tenure on the basketball court, he also spent time as an assistant coach on the Pirates football team, as well as last year’s defensive coordinator. This is his first year as a head coach but Hale totals 12 years of experience as an Coach Hale assistant coach with the Pirates and elsewhere. So what’s Hale most excited for this coming season? “A chance to work with a hardworking group of kids and a number of kids with varsity experience,” he said. The Pirates finished in the middle of the West Lakeland Conference with a 4-2 record and playoff appearance under former coach Keith Lehne, who spent 17 years as Pirates head coach. The Pirates

also made the playoffs last year but lost out to Stratford in the opening playoff game. Hale has a solid number of experienced seniors returning, which is likely to be one of the Pirates biggest strengths. “The kids also put in a great effort this summer in the weight room,” Hale said, and added that one of the weaknesses could be the lack in numbers throughout their freshman, sophomore and junior classes. Some of those who are returning for the 2012 season include Joe Gaffney at running back and defensive back, and Dakota Linke, Adam Parker, Clay Poeschl, Colton Tretsven and Chandler Witzany on the offensive and defensive line. Evan Ryan could also spend time on the defensive line and at wide receiver. Connor Myers is another receiver, quarterback and defensive back to watch, and Brandon Ryan and Bryce Ryan will return to running back and linebacker duties. Jacob Wald could provide an option as a receiver and defensive back, and Lucas Willis is a returning quarterback and linebacker. “Each Friday night will be a battle,” Hale said. “It should be a close race and many teams probably have a shot to win it.”

LUCK CARDINALS FOOTBALL Cards could have the edge in eightman this season

by Marty Seeger Leader staff writer LUCK – With a predicted decline in enrollment and a shortage in the number of underclassmen boys, the Luck Cardinals football team felt as though there was no choice but to move to eight-man football for the next two seasons. With only 22 players on roster this season, possibly even fewer next season, eight-man football seemed the perfect fit for Luck. The Cardinals Coach Kendzior were riddled with injuries last year and because of that, and eight-man football on the horizon, the team started an offensive scheme under head coach Don Kendzior to fit what they’ll be running on offense this year. It could be a significant advantage for the Cardinals who are small in numbers but big on talent, including several seniors that have spent significant time in the weight room over the past summer. ST. CROIX FALLS SAINTS FOOTBALL Saints look to defend conference crown under new coach

by Marty Seeger Leader staff writer ST. CROIX FALLS – The Saints football program underwent some changes since last year with one of the most significant being the addition of a new head coach in Grant Belisle. He replaces former head coach Rod Sempf, who is doing some coaching at the middle school level this season, and enjoying a little more free time. Coach Belisle Belisle isn’t new to coaching and is in his 11th season but first as head coach. He did eight seasons of coaching at Somerset, which is known as the local football powerhouse, and spent the past few at St. Croix Falls. Perhaps his biggest challenge this season will be rebuilding what was a ST. CROIX FALLS SAINTS FOOTBALL ROSTER

senior-dominated team last year. They graduated 17 seniors last year and have a much smaller senior core coming back. “Most of the 2011 skilled-position players were seniors, so we’ll have new faces carrying the ball. Shane Swanson and Jake Sommer do return to the running back position that they shared last season,” Belisle said. The Saints will have a little more inexperience than last season, but Belisle says he’s excited to see the seniors “experience what Friday nights are all about during their last season.” The new Lakeland North Conference will be another new challenge for the Saints this season. “Conf realignment is a huge change. Playing smaller, but experienced and successful, programs like Shell Lake and

Frederic brings a certain challenge that is new to SCF,” Belisle said. It also means there will be no gimmes this season either. “Every week, our opponent has the capability of beating us. We have to take care of ourselves, put our best effort forward and see what the outcome is,” said Belisle. Belisle said predictions on the season are difficult this early since he is a little unfamiliar with some of the teams in the Lakeland Conference, but like many other coaches, he believes Cameron and Frederic could

be the top contenders for a conference title. But he’s quick to point out that Unity, Grantsburg and Webster are just some of the others that will be in the mix as well.

SIREN DRAGONS FOOTBALL Eight-man football kicks off unique new season

With so many options to choose from, and little or no game film to study, there could be many surprises in each game. “Our biggest weakness will be in trying to adapt on a game-by-game basis the varying defenses and offenses that will be thrown our way,” said Hoefler. But since most of the teams are facing an essentially different game of football it could even the playing field. Eight-man football can be a lot faster with emphasis on high-scoring offenses that can be difficult to defend, but with three fewer players on both sides of the ball, the Dragons should be in good shape. Key returning players include Shay Johnson, Reuben Mixsooke, Caleb Mulroy and Josh Lemieux. “I think more than ever, however, this team will be very well-balanced. We have many players that will be contributing in one way or another, and we aren’t solely relying on just a few players to make the plays this year,” Hoefler said. Some teams already opted to go eight man last year and may have a slight advantage as to how the game is played, yet in the end, it’s still just football, with only three fewer players. Hoefler believes that Luck could be one of the toughest teams in the eight-man conference this season, but expects Northwood/Solon Springs and New Auburn to compete as well. “However, I think the conference is very well-balanced, and each and every game could be tough,” he said.

by Marty Seeger Leader staff writer SIREN – The Siren Dragons are entering an exciting new era of football this season after deciding to go with eightman football, along with Luck, Northwood/Solon Springs, New Auburn, Birchwood, Prairie Farm, Bruce and Winter. It’s not only a chance to give the smaller schools a winning attitude, it has also brought Coach Hoefler back a new sense of excitement to the game of football. “I am most excited about the enthusiasm the players are showing this year. They are coming together as a team and not individuals,” said coach Bill Hoefler, who is in his fifth year of coaching. One of the biggest challenges the Dragons will have this season is learning the many new offense and defensive plays they’ll see from opposing teams this year. SIREN DRAGONS FOOTBALL ROSTER

UNITY EAGLES FOOTBALL Eagles conditioned for success this season

by Marty Seeger Leader staff writer BALSAM LAKE – The Eagles football team played .500 football last season overall, but with a 4-2 conference record, they earned a spot in the playoffs, only to fall against a strong Somerset team. Unity has a lot of fresh new faces on the team this year, as they only bring back three starters on ofCoach Anderson fense, and will be filling the gaps with less experience. But on that same note, the returning players did see some playing time at the varsity level, which is a bonus for coach Dave Anderson. “We do have a lot of kids coming back that have played varsity roles. our offense and defense really well,” Anderson said. The Eagles have dropped considerably in enrollment from last season, going from about 370 kids to 313. There are roughly 36 kids on the roster this year, which is also a drop. “It might be a weakness because we’re going to have to bring up some younger kids,” Anderson said, adding too that most of their starters will need to play both on offense and defense. Last year the team didn’t have to do that as much. At the team’s most recent scrimmage at Amery, Anderson was pleased with how his team played, particularly with how well-conditioned they were compared to

the other teams. “They’ve been really working hard on conditioning. A lot of weight room work over the summer,” Anderson said, but he also said the Eagles will need to be in top form since many players will be needed on both offense and defense. Anderson feels the team's biggest strength will be in the conditioning but also says he is big on the offensive and defensive line. He has starting running back Kyle Sorensen from last season and will have a new quarterback with Zach Johnson. The Eagles have a slight change this season with the new Lakeland North Conference and the addition of Shell

Lake and Frederic. Other than playing Frederic for the first time in many years, the Eagles will be set to take on the same conference rivals and earn another spot in the playoffs.

WEBSTER TIGERS FOOTBALL Tigers short on seniors but hope to shine in new conference

by Marty Seeger Leader staff writer WEBSTER – If the Webster Tigers football team can start the season the way they finished last season, they’ll be in good shape under head coach Jeromie Voeltz, who has been leading the Tigers since 2005. Webster defeated Unity and Flambeau in their final two games of the season and Coach Voeltz won the opener, but it was a difficult conference season overall. This year the challenges will be even higher, as the Tigers get set to play in the Lakeland North Conference for the first time. “Every team we play will be a key opponent. We are very fortunate this year to be in an extremely tough conference that will give our football team a challenge each and every week. teams from a year ago. Our athletes know that they cannot take a moment off because each opponent will be a difficult task. We are going to have to prepare extremely hard each and every day, and our coaches and players are going to be ready for those challenges,” Voeltz said. The team is short on seniors this year with only three, and of the seven teams they face on the schedule this year, five earned a spot in the playoffs. They return seven letter winners from last year including seniors Nathan Puttbrese and Dillon Reeder. Juniors Aaron Dietmeier, Cliff Benjamin, Mark Stoner, Lance Preston and Michael Johnson round out the list. “We will be obviously lacking in our senior numbers, but I believe that they

are up for any task that is presented in front of them. With only three seniors, we will be looking for some of our younger athletes to also step up and be that solid foundation that we need for the success of our program,” Voeltz said. With so much talent loaded into the Lakeland North Conference, the Tigers and others will have their hands full each week. Voeltz says Frederic and St. Croix Falls are favorites to be at the top of the heap again this season, but others feel Cameron could bring a lot to the table, since many of their talented skill players are back again this year. Either way, Voeltz feels his kids are up to the challenge. “I am excited to start another new journey with a new group of student athletes.

We have a very eager group of athletes who are up to the challenges that a football season brings forth.”

Vikings starting 2012 season with a new coach

by Marty Seeger Leader staff writer FREDERIC – Frederic Vikings have a familiar face back in the gym with 2004 Frederic graduate Jackie (Funk) Peterson at the helm. The married mother of a 1year-old daughter moved back to the area last July, after six years living in Eau Claire. Peterson was a standout athlete in both volleyball and track, and played two years of volleyball at Vermilion Community College in Ely, Minn. She Coach Peterson says her main sport was track and field in high school, where she earned trips to state in the 300-meter hurdles and 4x100meter relay. She has a full roster of about 24 girls including seven seniors and two juniors. “We’ve got a lot of really good sophomores and good freshmen coming up, so I think with some consistency, we’ll have some good years coming up,” she said. Frederic posted just three wins in a tough conference last season, but they won seven matches overall and earned a trip to the second round of the WIAA regional playoffs. They lost a few key senior starters from last season, but have a lot to look forward to with a new coach. Peterson says her newness as a coach might be a weakness, but could also be an advantage. “I consider it a weakness because I’ve never coached before, but at the same time, the girls are kind of helping me with things, and I’m helping them with things. So I think we’ll be a stronger team altogether just because we’re learning together.”

We have top-achieving students, positive role models, state musicians and multi-sport athletes with many talents. Our entire team is friendly, coachable and skilled.” She noted that the Pirates did lose three all-conference players, one of whom was also all-state, and called it “a challenge to overcome,” but the talent pool is deep in Grantsburg. “We have eager kids ready to step in, so we have a lot of new faces and more shared positions,” she added. The Pirates are again favored to dominate the West Lakeland Conference, but their success makes them common targets. “We consider every team a key opponent, but some of our best competition this season will come right in our own conference.” She won’t make any predictions, but applauds the conference coaches for improving their programs tremendously. “This makes everyone better. last season, with a 10-2 conference record and a 24-7 overall mark. Their season ended in the WIAA Regional semifinal with a hard-fought, 3-2 loss to Clayton. “The players put in a lot of hours in the offseason, and now they are ready to play!” Nelson said. “I am so grateful to have such committed players and parents that love the game of volleyball.” The Cards have a bevy of quality returning players at all grades. “We really are fortunate to have so much talent at Luck. The team understands that they’re either going to win or lose as a team. It’s not going to be one person’s victories or faults,” Nelson said. “It doesn’t come down to one play. It comes down to them playing as a team and the team with the least amount of errors wins ... We are “one team with one dream.” Ashley Dexter

One of the main differences with this year’s team is the addition of two freshmen including a starting setter, Emma Wondra. The rest include starting outside hitter Sydney Geisness, who has been on the varsity all four years. “She has come back just absolutely phenomenal. In the best shape, and I just feel she’s going to dominate this year,” Hoff said. Senior Natalie Sempf is back as the team’s libero, and juniors Kierstyn Campbell and Jes-

Many of the players have been playing club volleyball over the summer, and Geisness has been involved in a league out of the Twin Cities. But the biggest strength is the weight training over the summer according to Hoff, as well as height, depth and blocking ability. “Our blocking has always been kind of a strength. Dragons steadily improving and should be competitive

by Marty Seeger Leader staff writer SIREN – Siren head coach Caryn Stanford is in her fourth season as head coach of the Dragons volleyball team, and while the process of turning the program around has been a gradual one, she feels the team is heading in the right direction this year. “I think we are moving up in our level of our ability, and I’m excited to see how they fare,” Stanford said. last year but have the majority of their starters back for their senior season. Those seniors have had a lot of time to play at the varsity level, and they hope to shine this season and use what they’ve learned over the past three years. “We gained a lot of good experience last year, and this year we have some good newcomers coming in and we’re looking pretty good. I think we’ll be just fine,” Stanford said. The Dragons had just one win last season, but it came at just the right time during the first round of playoffs against South Shore. Team strengths include not only senior leadership but the fact that the team is a cohesive group and gets along well. The team has had an interesting start to the season as they’ve been forced to practice in Webster due to the fire at the end of the school year last year. Stanford says they should be back to playing at home once the regular season begins and able to look at their predicament in a positive way.

“Webster’s been very generous,” Stanford said. “In a way, it’s a good team-building thing because you’ve got to rely on each other.”

Young Tigers hope to compete in another tough conference

by Greg Marsten Leader staff writer WEBSTER – The Tigers step onto the court for 2012 with high hopes for a strong West Lake-land season behind 12year coach Mindy Widiker, who led the squad to a 5-7 conference record last season and an 8-9 overall mark, ending with a first-round WIAA Regional loss to rival St. Croix Falls. and has some growing to do, but that could also mean they surprise some folks. “Our weakness is we are a young team and have plenty to learn yet. But I’m excited to see how this team will progress and develop as the season gets under way,” she said. The Tigers have five returning players who are all key, according to Widiker. “I’m looking for different contributions from all five of them: Gabby Schiller, Jill Holmstrom, Marissa Elliott, Alex Holmstrom, Raelyn Tretsven and Christina Weis,” she said. “Our strengths this season are yet to be determined.” Webster finished solidly in the middle of the pack last year, but also had some strong upsets and made every set count. Widiker thinks they can again be a contender, and like most local coaches, recognizes the quality of the conference, compared to some parts of the state. “My outlook is that it should be a tough conference as always with a lot of great teams playing this season,” she said. by Marty Seeger Leader staff writer GRANTSBURG – Head coach Paul Huskamp is in his ninth year as head coach, and in that span, he’s taken four teams to the state meet and coached two individual state champions. Last year was one of the best as the boys team brought home a state runnerup trophy, and Huskamp was honored as District 1 Coach of the Year. “That was a surprising honor,” said Huskamp, who has another great group of boys coming back again this season, despite losing four top seniors from the Coach Huskamp team that went to state last season. Junior Jacob Ohnstad will be one of the team leaders, but others that were a big part of last year’s success include the team’s only senior, Sean Handy, sophomore Richard Schneider and junior Erland Olson. “Some of the guys have been putting in a lot of miles this summer, and I’m excited to see what their potential will be. ST. CROIX FALLS CROSS COUNTRY Saints girls look like top contenders in the conference

by Marty Seeger Leader staff writer ST. CROIX FALLS – The St. Croix Falls girls have already generated excitement at the start of the season with a team win at the opening Sherstad Invitational in Grantsburg. The team has a new freshman, Sophie Klein, who posted a time of 17:59.4, which is a phenomenal start to her running career. She has a shot at making the state meet already and the team has full potential to go after Coach Clemins a conference crown. “The girls team also has the possibility to advance as a team. Both Rice Lake and Bloomer (who advanced as teams last year to state) will be the teams for us to watch for, but I’m not going to rule out anything. If we work hard and keep our minds focused on this ultimate goal, anything is possible,” said fourth-year head coach Jennifer Clemins. Clemins should also be excited for sophomore Henry Klein on the boys team. He earned a spot at state last season and has the potential to do it again this year. He took second overall at the Sherstad Invite. With the majority of their veteran runners back from last season, with excep-

UNITY/LUCK CROSS COUNTRY Unity/Luck boasts better numbers

by Marty Seeger Leader staff writer BALSAM LAKE – The Unity/Luck cross country program is continually looking to build more numbers into the program, and this year is one of the best since Lori Anderson began her coaching career, especially with the boys. Eight of the boys on the team this season are freshmen, along with veteran runners Colton Sorensen and Scott Coach Anderson Bever. Sorensen continues his quest to get to a state tournament again this season and barely missed his chance last season. But he and several others have been training and working hard over the summer to improve. “Colton … he knows what he has to do UNITY/LUCK CROSS COUNTRY BOYS ROSTER

Sorensen is also a good role model for the younger athletes, particularly at the middle school level, which only makes the team stronger. The team will also benefit in their close friendships.

“I think it’s because Colton is such a good leader and the camaraderie of the entire team. They’re friends. They get along. They’re a little family,” Anderson said. Of the six girls on the roster three are seniors, but eight of the 12 boys on the ros-

ter are freshmen and could provide a big spark for the boys team. “Good solid freshmen coming up, They’re inexperienced, but a lot of raw talent, so it's really going to add to the team,” Anderson said.

WEBSTER CROSS COUNTRY Tigers look to new leader for success

by Marty Seeger Leader staff writer WEBSTER – The Webster cross-country team has at least one significant change this season in the absence of former coach Jim Muus, who retired last season after roughly 30 seasons with the program. Muus created one of the strongest and most successful programs in the area and brought home a multitude of trophies including a runner-up finish at the state championships in 2007 and Coach Ward a state championship the following year. But right alongside of Muus was coach Roy Ward, who should have no troubles leading many more successful cross-country teams in the future. “Much of my success has been directly related to coach Muus and the athletes commitment to themselves and the program. I have enjoyed watching athletes improve and reach their individual goals as well as being part of being the best team in the state in 2008,” Ward said. The Tiger girls took third overall, and the boys came in fourth place in the opening meet of the season and have a whole season to improve. The team has several runners back from last season including

Both seniors earned trips as individuals to the state meet last season. With about nine boys and eight girls, Ward has a set of teams to work with this season and will most certainly have the kids in top form by the end of the year, just as Muus had done over the past 30 seasons. “My biggest challenge is to fill Jim Muus’ shoes. He was a great distance

runner himself, and he has taken kids to state every year. I was fortunate to coach with Jim since 1998. I would like to continue his tradition of excellence. The teams need to do their best with who they have. Like every team we have the same obstacles to deal with. My hope is that through good coaching and peer leadership, at the end we are satisfied with the final outcome,” Ward said.

It’s a full house for Luck/Unity golf

LUCK/UNITY GIRLS GOLF

by Marty Seeger Leader staff writer LUCK – The biggest change for the Luck/Unity golf team this season is in the numbers. This will be the first year in several that they’ll have a full team competing at matches, and with at least four matches golfed already this season, the team has shown a lot of improvement. “You can see improvement,” said coach Ron Steen. “They want to learn, and they’re having fun.” Senior Avery Steen will once again lead the team this season and she’ll be eyeing a fourth consecutive trip to the state golf meet in Madison. “I hope she has a good year. I hope she shoots well and is going to have fun,” Steen said. Others include seniors Tina Lennartson and Jena Alling, who have been with the team since their freshman seasons. The team has lured at least four others from the volleyball team as well, which has helped to add more depth. Team “bests” are common now almost weekly, which is as good as it gets for any coach. The unfortunate thing about the season for Luck/Unity is that they’ll once again be playing without a conference. They

won’t have any home matches but will be playing with the Heart of the North Conference once again. While they won’t be able to earn a conference title, they and St. Croix Falls, who is also without a conference, team or individuals will still have a shot at qualifying for state as a team or individuals. Steen says that Hayward will be a team to beat this season and have state potential, while farther south in Osceola, Casey Danielson will be looking for a fourth Division 2 state championship.

ST. CROIX FALLS GIRLS GOLF

Full team highlights SCF girls golf

by Marty Seeger Leader staff writer ST. CROIX FALLS – The St. Croix Falls had a down year last season due in part to only two golfers showing interest in competing. One of those girls, McKenzie Katzmark, is back again as a sophomore, and the Saints have a handful more that will help make this season a bigger success under coach Maria Gjovig, who is in her second season as head coach. “The most exciting thing for me this season is having more golfers to work with and expanding our program,” Gjovig said. Other team members include senior Samantha O’Brien and Taylor Orton as well as sophomores Lindsey Wondra, Hayley Cermin, Megan Swenson and Kamille Flandrena. “Our returning sophomore, McKenzie, will be a big strength. Not only has her game improved tremendously, she will also be an asset in teaching the other girls about the courses we will be playing. Additional strengths will be our young, energetic outlook,” Gjovig said. Still after two seasons the Saints will not be included in any conference other than their own, along with Luck/Unity’s golf

team. They won’t qualify for conference points, nor a conference title in the Heart of the North Conference, but will be playing along on the various golf courses with the Heart of the North throughout the short fall season. Gjovig, like other coaches, expect Hayward to be a solid team this season, and the Hurricanes have proved that already as many teams are in their fifth and sixth matches. Meanwhile, St. Croix Falls looks to be continuing its growth and rebuilding on what has been a strong tradition in girls golf for quite some time. “I look forward to another growing season and look forward to working with this team,” Gjovig said.

UNITY/LUCK TENNIS Unity/Luck tennis looks to stay competitive in Middle Border Conference

by Greg Marsten Leader staff writer BALSAM LAKE – The cooperative Unity/Luck tennis team returns to the court for 2012 with a solid group, both at singles and in doubles. Head coach Beth Fogarty returns for her fourth season at the helm, with returning assistants Tom and Jane Hoffman to assist at all levels and the enthusiasm is strong for the squad to do well in the formidable Middle Border Conference, where they may play schools with much larger enrollments. Beth Fogarty “We’re really looking forward to a fun year,” Fogarty said. The tennis season is among the first fall sports to get under way, and the Unity/Luck squad already has some competitive court time, long before the summer ends. So far, the two seniors, Anna
